Saudi Arabia is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures this weekend, with the National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) predicting that some regions will see temperatures as low as -3°C.

The cold wave is expected to affect large parts of the country from Sunday (Dec 15) through Tuesday (Dec 17).

<h2>Areas facing severe cold</h2>

According to NCM spokesperson Hussain Al Qahtani, the cold air mass will primarily impact the northern and central regions, including Tabuk, Al Jawf, Northern Borders, Hail, and the northern parts of the Eastern Province. These areas are likely to experience temperatures ranging between 0°C and -3°C.

<h2>Cold weather extends to other regions</h2>

By Monday and Tuesday, the cold weather is forecast to spread further south, affecting Al Qassim, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province. In these areas, temperatures may range from 2°C to 5°C, accompanied by strong winds and dust storms.

As the cold snap approaches, Saudi Arabia’s residents are being reminded to stay vigilant and prepared for the extreme weather conditions.

Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 Men's Football World Cup, with global body FIFA confirming the development on December 11. Watch this report for more details!

Saudi Arabia To Host 2034 FIFA World Cup

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup, underlining the Gulf kingdom's growing influence in world sport despite criticism of the country's human rights record.

At the same time, a virtual Congress of world football's governing body confirmed that Morocco, Spain and Portugal will be joint hosts of the 2030 World Cup, in which three games will also be played in South America.

The Saudi bid was waved through by acclamation during the meeting of FIFA's 211 national member associations, with no rivals standing in its way.

"It is a proud day, a day of celebration, a day that we invite the entire world to Saudi Arabia," said Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Sports.

"We intend to have an extraordinary version of the World Cup in our kingdom."

However, there was immediate condemnation from rights groups who insisted that handing the organisation of the tournament to the country puts the lives of construction workers at risk and "marks a moment of great danger".

FIFA had invoked its principle of rotating the World Cup between continents, which meant only bids from Asia or Oceania were welcome for 2034.

The unprecedented organisation of the 2030 tournament will involve three continental confederations in Europe, Africa and South America, while the next World Cup in 2026 -- the first involving 48 teams -- will take place across North America.

Controversially, the body gave potential bidders barely a month last year to submit candidacies, and Australia and Indonesia quickly abandoned their interest.

That left Saudi Arabia as the sole candidate, clearing the way for the World Cup to return to the Gulf region so soon after Qatar hosted in 2022.

The kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been using sport for some time to amass influence and improve its global image -- critics, though, say he is effectively "sportswashing" by diverting attention from Saudi Arabia's rights record.

<h2>'Moment of great danger'</h2>

The awarding of the World Cup to Saudi will make the issue of human rights a major talking point again, just as it was two years ago.

"We are inclusive and we are non-discriminatory, and we want to obtain positive social impact," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in closing remarks.

"We are of course aware of critics and fears, and I fully trust our hosts to address all open points from this process and deliver a FIFA World Cup which meets expectations."

He added that "social improvements and positive human rights impacts" are the "responsibilities of hosting a World Cup."

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system. Free expression is severely restricted too.

FIFA's decision to award the tournament to Saudi Arabia "despite the well-known and severe risks to residents, migrant workers and visiting fans alike, marks a moment of great danger," Amnesty International and 20 other organisations said in a joint statement.&nbsp;

"Based on clear evidence to date, FIFA knows workers will be exploited and even die without fundamental reforms in Saudi Arabia, and yet has chosen to press ahead regardless," said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty's Head of Labour Rights and Sport.

<h2>'Centenary celebration'</h2>

The 2030 tournament will mark a century since the first World Cup was held in Uruguay, and as a result the unrivalled joint bid by Morocco, Spain and Portugal will also see the South American nation handed one game along with Argentina and Paraguay.

FIFA confirmed over a year ago that the joint proposal led by Morocco, Spain and Portugal was the sole contender for 2030, with all other potential candidacies having fallen by the wayside.

Four South American countries launched a joint bid in 2019, convinced that the centenary World Cup should entirely take place on the same continent where it all began.

Meanwhile, Morocco replaced Ukraine as a partner for Spain and Portugal, while South America agreed to step aside in exchange for hosting three games.

Following these "centenary celebrations" in the southern hemisphere winter, the six teams involved will cross the Atlantic to play the rest of the tournament.

Spain, which hosted the 1982 World Cup, should be the centrepiece as it boasts 11 of the 20 proposed stadiums.

Morocco -- after failing on five previous occasions to be awarded the staging of the tournament -- will become the second African nation to host the competition after South Africa in 2010.

Potential venues for the July 21 final include the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and Barcelona's renovated Camp Nou as well as the planned Hassan II stadium between Casablanca and Rabat, set to boast a capacity of 115,000.

FIFA World Cup: Saudi Arabia becomes 2034 host; Morocco, Spain and Portugal to co-host in 2030

Saudi Arabia's holdings of U.S. Treasuries have reached their highest level in four years, with the kingdom’s central bank holding $144 billion in U.S. Government bonds. This now accounts for almost 35 percent of its total foreign assets, a notable increase from previous months. The share of U.S. Treasuries has surged, reaching the highest proportion since February 2020, when the pandemic first impacted global markets. Watch in for more details!

Saudi Arabia Increases U.S. Treasury Holdings To Highest In 4 Years

Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 World Cup was considered "medium risk" for human rights by FIFA in its evaluation report, which said implementing reforms could take "significant time and effort". The release of the report Saturday comes ahead of the FIFA Congress on December 11, when a vote will be held to officially appoint the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.

Saudi Arabia is the lone candidate for 2034 while Morocco, Spain and Portugal have formed a joint bid for the 2030 tournament, with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay all set to host a match as part of the centenary edition.

The Saudi bid "presents a very strong all-round proposition, reflected in the results of the technical evaluation, which assesses the proposed infrastructure (both sporting and general) as well as its commercial potential," FIFA said in its report.

But football's world governing body cautioned, "in terms of human rights, the undertaking involved in implementing the various measures... particularly in certain areas, could involve significant effort and time".

FIFA said that was the basis for the elevated risk rating for a bid that received an average score of 4.2 out of 5 -- higher than the combined bid by the United States, Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

"It is important to note that the bid involves significant opportunities for positive human rights impact," added FIFA. "There is good potential that the tournament could serve as a catalyst for some of the ongoing and future reforms and contribute to positive human rights outcomes for people in Saudi Arabia and the region that go beyond the scope of the tournament itself."

<h2>Another winter World Cup?</h2>

Saudi Arabia has yet to build several proposed stadiums for a tournament that could be held in winter, as was the case in neighbouring Qatar. The report highlighted average daytime temperatures in the capital Riyadh that exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in June and July.

Human rights, a source of deep controversy at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, threatens to become a major talking point once again in the run-up to 2034.

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system.

Free expression is severely restricted, with some people handed lengthy jail terms over critical posts on social media.

Saudi Arabia, which is hosting several high-profile events including Formula One and the WTA Finals tennis, is often accused of "sportswashing" -- using sport to divert attention from its rights record.

"As expected, FIFA's evaluation of Saudi Arabia's World Cup bid is an astonishing whitewash of the country's atrocious human rights record," said Amnesty International. "There are no meaningful commitments that will prevent workers from being exploited, residents from being evicted or activists from being arrested.

"By ignoring the clear evidence of severe human rights risks, FIFA is likely to bear much responsibility for the violations and abuses that will take place over the coming decade.

"Fundamental human rights reforms are urgently required in Saudi Arabia, or the 2034 World Cup will be inevitably tarnished by exploitation, discrimination and repression."

Saudi Arabia 2034 World Cup bid considered 'medium risk' for human rights, says FIFA

Media reports revealed Sunday (Nov. 24) that a Saudi delegate has been accused of making unauthorised changes to the official COP29 negotiating text. Usually, non-editable PDF copies are circulated among member nations for further discussions and the consensus-building process. However, concerns have been raised as it was revealed that an editable document may have been shared with the delegate of Saudi Arabia, regarded by many as a persistent obstructor of action at UN climate summits.

Azerbaijan presidency on Saturday circulated the text on the Just Transition Work Programme (JTWP) among all countries.

The Guardian reported that at least two cases of changes were unearthed when compared to the originally circulated text. The changes were apparently made by Basel Alsubaity, linked to the Saudi Ministry of Energy and the lead on the JTWP.

In one case, the following section of text was found deleted by the Saudi team: “encourages parties to consider just transition pathways in developing and implementing NDCs, NAPs, and LT-LEDSs that are aligned with the outcome of the first global stock take and relevant provisions of the Paris agreement.”

Experts criticised the Azerbaijan presidency for giving Saudi delegate the access to edit the document.

“Giving one party editing access to these documents, and a party known for its objective of rolling back the historic global agreement made last year to transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy and energy efficiency, suggests a worrying lack of independence and objectivity, and clearly contravenes both the spirit and the rules of this process,” said Catherine Abreu, the director of the International Climate Politics Hub and a Cop veteran to the Guardian.

Saudi delegate accused of making 'unauthorised changes' to key COP29 document: Report

The longtime chief executive of the $500bn Saudi development project Neom Nadhmi al-Nasr, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has departed, according to a Neom statement issued on November 12. There was no reason given for his departure, according to a detailed report by The Guardian.

Prince Mohammed has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into development projects through the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) sovereign wealth fund.

Brief&nbsp;history of the PIF Fund<o:p></o:p>

The Public Investment Fund is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. It is among the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world with total estimated assets of US$930 billion (£718.2 billion). It was created in 1971 for the purpose of investing funds on behalf of the Government of Saudi Arabia. The wealth fund is controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler since 2015.

Further, the Red Sea mega-project, an urban and industrial development nearly the size of Belgium due to house nearly 9 million people, is central to the prince’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil, detailed the Guardian report further.

But some of the schemes have had to be reduced due to rising costs, including the Line, a futuristic city between mirrored walls extending 170km (106 miles) into the desert within Neom. The overall objective behind this is to enhance productivity.<o:p></o:p>

Further, in May, Reuters reported that the $925bn PIF was planning a re-organisation, aiming to increase its focus on investments that have a higher chance of success. Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, is still heavily reliant on hydrocarbon revenues, and low oil prices and it is crucial to note that production have dented state coffers.<o:p></o:p>

Aiman al-Mudaifer was named as acting CEO of Neom. He has been the head of the Local Real Estate Division at PIF since 2018 and has a deep understanding of Neom and its projects, detailed Neom’s statement.<o:p></o:p>

“As Neom enters a new phase of delivery, this new leadership will ensure operational continuity, agility and efficiency to match the overall vision and objectives of the project,” the press release reads.

In his role at PIF, Mudaifer oversees all local real estate investments and infrastructure projects, and he is a board member of several prominent companies in the kingdom. Market participants and global investors will carefully follow these developments. They will help them in taking informed investment decisions.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored three times on Monday as Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal beat Iranian side Esteghlal in the AFC Champions Elite to maintain their 100 percent start to the competition. Brazil star Neymar came on as a second-half substitute but was then replaced. It was the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker's second appearance in two weeks following almost one year out after rupturing ligaments in his left knee.

Neymar, 32, came on after 58 minutes at Kingdom Arena with Al Hilal already 2-0 up thanks to a first-half double from Serbia striker Mitrovic.&nbsp;However, Brazil's all-time leading scorer appeared to have a problem with his thigh and, minutes after receiving treatment on the sidelines, was substituted on 86 minutes.&nbsp;

He left the pitch clutching his right hamstring. The win puts Saudi title-holders Al Hilal, record four-time continental champions, top of the standings for West Asia, with four victories from four.

Also on Monday, fellow Saudi side Al Ahli ensured they would keep pace with their Riyadh rivals. Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice in a 5-1 win over Al Shorta of Iraq to take the team to 12 points from a possible 12.

Former Liverpool star Firmino opened the scoring at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on 14 minutes with a glancing header from Ziyad Al Johani's cross.&nbsp;

The goal ended the Brazilian's eight-match goalless streak. Al Ahli had the chance to go 2-0 up 11 minutes later, but Franck Kessie's penalty was saved by Al Shorta goalkeeper Ahmed Basil. Almost in an instant, the visitors equalised through Sajjad Jassim.

Firmino put the hosts back in front deep into first-half injury-time. Al Ahli then scored three times in 12 second-half minutes to blow away Al Shorta.

First, Firmino teed up Saudi Arabia international Feras Al Buraikan, before former Manchester City winger Mahrez struck twice in quick succession just after the hour.&nbsp;

Elsewhere, UAE side Al Wasl were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Al Sadd of Qatar, while Iran's Persepolis and Qatar's Al Gharafa played out the same scoreline also in Dubai.

Archaeologists&nbsp;have made a stunning discovery of a 4,000-year-old Bronze Age town in the Arabian Peninsula where nearly 500 people used to live.&nbsp;

The discovery has shed light on how ancient societies transitioned from nomadic lifestyle to urban living.

French archaeologist Guillaume Charloux, along with Saudi researchers, discovered the al-Natah settlement close to the Khaybar Oasis.

According to the researchers, al-Natah spans around 2.6 hectares (6.4 acres) and was constructed in 2400 BCE. The town remained inhabited till roughly 1300 BCE.

“Our findings suggest that the people of al-Natah engaged in a slower, region-specific process of urbanisation,” Charloux said while speaking to AFP.

He emphasised that the structure and stone barriers of the town suggested that inhabitants were socially organised and the area was traditionally dominated by nomadic communities.&nbsp;

<h2>All about al-Natah</h2>

The site near the city of Al-Ula in western Saudi Arabia's Hejaz region was found by the archaeologists and it was named "al-Natah."&nbsp;

A 9-mile-long (14.5 kilometre) wall is believed to have encircled Al-Natah and protected it.

According to the archaeologists, a carefully planned settlement was created which had a central administrative zone, walled gardens, a necropolis and a residential district with interconnected streets.

There were circular stepped tower tombs and multiple artefacts in the necropolis.

Archaeologists also discovered axes, daggers, precious stone rings made of agate and pieces of pottery on the site.

In the research conducted in al-Natah and other sites, it was found that urbanisation was slow in the Arabian Peninsula.&nbsp;

"Settlements in northern Arabia were in a transitional stage of urbanisation during the third to second millennium [B.C.]," said the researchers, in the statement.&nbsp;

This phase was called "low urbanisation" because it described a transitional stage between pastoralism and complex urban settlements.

"While urbanisation began in Mesopotamia and Egypt in the 4th millennium B.C., our study tends to show that social complexity increased late in north-western Arabia," said Charloux.

A similar fortification from the same epoch was found by the archaeologists in the neighbouring Tayma Oasis in January.

Archaeologists have still not figured out why al-Natah was abandoned between 1500–1300 BCE. “It’s a pertinent question that we can’t answer at the moment,” said Charloux, adding that extensive work is still required in this area.

Saudi Arabia was thwarted Wednesday in its bid to join the UN's human rights council, which is charged with protecting freedoms globally, after coming sixth in a vote of UN members for one of five regional seats.

Ethiopia and Qatar were among the 18 countries elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for three-year terms, despite campaign groups previously alleging rights violations in both countries.

"This vote to deny Saudi Arabia a seat on the UN Human Rights Council matters. For far too long, (Crown Prince) Mohammed bin Salman's regime has acted as if it has complete impunity to commit grave human rights abuses, safe in the knowledge that its international partners would look the other way," said campaign group Reprieve.

International Service for Human Rights program director Tess McEvoy said that "when given a real choice, states voted down the less deserving candidate, refusing to hand powerful actors who violate basic rights an enhanced ability to bend key human rights processes in their favour."

The five vacant seats in the Asia-Pacific region went to Cyprus, the Marshall Islands, Qatar, Korea and Thailand.

Saudi Arabia was thwarted Wednesday in its bid to join the UN's human rights council, which is charged with protecting freedoms globally, after coming sixth in a vote of UN members for one of five regional seats.
