A Saudi court sentenced a retired teacher to 30 years in jail for criticising the government on social media, less than two months after his death sentence was overturned, his brother said on Tuesday. The death sentence against Mohammed al-Ghamdi highlighted what critics describe as heightened repression under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Gulf kingdom's de facto ruler. Prince Mohammed addressed the case in an interview with Fox News that aired in September 2023, saying the government was "ashamed" over it and expressing hope the outcome could be changed. Ghamdi's death sentence was overturned on appeal in August. But the appeals court sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment on the same charges, his brother Saeed al-Ghamdi, an Islamic scholar who lives in Britain, told AFP. Mohammed al-Ghamdi had been sentenced to death in July 2023 by the Specialised Criminal Court, which was set up in 2008 to deal with terrorism-related cases. The former teacher, who is in his 50s, was arrested in June 2022. Also read: X reveals first transparency report under Musk; 5 million accounts axed in 2024 The case against him was at least partly built on posts criticising the government and expressing support for "prisoners of conscience" like the jailed religious clerics Salman al-Awda and Awad al-Qarni, his brother has previously said. His account on social media platform X had only nine followers, the Gulf Centre for Human Rights said when his legal troubles came to light last year. The charges he faced included conspiracy against the Saudi leadership, undermining state institutions and supporting terrorist ideology, sources briefed on the details said at the time. "This about-face in judgements testifies to the dramatic state of the kingdom's politicised judicial system," Saeed al-Ghamdi said on X. "My brother is not guilty to be arrested and tried in this way," he added. The Saudi authorities could not immediately be reached for comment. Human Rights Watch and Saeed al-Ghamdi reported last month that another brother, 47-year-old Asaad al-Ghamdi, had been sentenced to 20 years over critical social media posts. There was no word on Tuesday on whether judges would also review Asaad al-Ghamdi's sentence. Under Prince Mohammed, Saudi Arabia has been pursuing an ambitious reform agenda known as Vision 2030 intended to transform the formerly closed-off kingdom into a global tourism and business destination. However, Saudi authorities continue to take heat for the country's rights record and restrictions on free speech in particular. Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan to stop its beggars from coming to the Gulf country under the pretext of religious pilgrimage. As per media reports, Saudi ministry of Hajj has issued a warning to Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs. Riyadh is concerned over the growing number of Pakistani beggars arriving in the country under Umrah visas. Saudi Arabia has warned that if necessary action is not taken by Islamabad, it can hamper religious and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Responding to Saudi Arabia’s concerns, Pakistani authorities have now introduced an Umrah Act, which will increase the state’s oversight over agencies that facilitate travel to Saudi Arabia under Umrah visas.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has also reached out to the Saudi government, asking for devising ways in which beggars can be stopped from travelling to Saudi Arabia.

A meeting has also taken place between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Ahmed Al-Malki, where the Pakistani side has assured Riyadh that strict action will be taken against the ‘beggar mafia’.

After 13-hour shifts at a construction site outside Riyadh, the Bangladeshi national would return to the room he shared with 11 other workers, then fight for a turn at the gas stove so he could make dinner before repeating the routine the next day.

Now back home, the 35-year-old says he was never paid for seven of his 17 months in the Gulf kingdom. He warns that a pending construction boom -- for stadiums for the 2034 World Cup and other large-scale projects -- could expose others to similar exploitation.

The first batch of 55 Royal Saudi Navy Officer trainees arrived in Kochi, Kerala, from the King Fahad Academy of the Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF) in the year 2023. The Saudi Government had deputed them for training aboard India's 1st Training Squadron, Southern Naval Command. Following the success of the 2023 edition, 76 Saudi trainees came to Kochi in 2024, thereby giving a fillip to the Indo-Saudi ties and bonhomie. The 1st TS fleet comprises Indian-made ships INS Tir, INS Sujata, INS Shardul, ICGS Varuna and two Sail Training Ships, Sudarshini and Tarangini. The Indian Navy's Southern Naval Command also boasts of Asia's Largest Naval Academy, the sprawling Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, where Indian Naval and Coast Guard officers are imparted ab-initio training. The primary aim of the First Training Squadron is to impart sea training to Naval and Coast Guard officer cadets (within a span of months). All the trainees are trained in Seamanship, Navigation, Ship Handling, Boat Work, Technical aspects etc. whilst being exposed to the rigours of life at sea, so as to earn their metaphorical ‘sea legs’. The Saudi trainees not only trained along with their Indian counterparts, but also undertook three sea sorties along with the Indian Navy trainees aboard the 1st Training Squadron ships. During these sea sorties, the Saudi cadets performed various exercises including Visit, Board, Search & Seize Operations (VBSS), transfer of personnel from one ship to another, replenishment at sea, etc. During their training period in #Kochi #Kerala #India, #Saudi Naval officer trainees worked together with their #IndianNavy counterparts.. 🇮🇳🇸🇦 They went on 3 sea sorties. The most important aspect of cross-training is the capacity to learn together and about each other. An Indian Navy officer trainee onboard 1TS commented, “We have formed really close bonds. We study and prepare for exams, and conduct maneuvers at sea together. It is a great learning experience for all of us.” Evolution of India-Saudi defence ties India-Saudi Arabia relations have grown from strength to strength in recent decades. Such growing closeness with Saudi Arabia is part of India’s broader focus on nurturing ties with West Asia. India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy focused not just on ‘Look West’, but also, on ‘Act West’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to UAE in August 2015 was the first-ever by an Indian PM in 34 years. Later in 2019, India signed a pact with Saudi Arabia for the establishment of a Strategic Partnership Council (SPC), expanding the ambit of bilateral relations to cover political, security, social, economic, investment, and cultural cooperation. Among these domains, military ties stand out, as India and Saudi Arabia conducted their first-ever bilateral Naval exercise, 'Al Mohed Al Hind', in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, in August 2021. Later, as a measure of reciprocity, in February 2022, Saudi Arabia became one among more than three dozen countries to participate in the Indian Navy’s ‘Milan’ Exercise on the shores of India’s eastern city of Visakhapatnam. Jan-Feb 2024 also witnessed the first edition of the India-Saudi Arabia Joint Military Exercise, 'Sada Tanseeq', held in the deserts of Rajasthan. Also read: Watch | Indian Navy rocks UK streets! Naval band of INS Tabar performs in London These military exercises prove crucial in imbibing the best practices from each other, increasing interoperability, and fostering trust - all three being emblematic of growing relations between the two countries. Among these, trust manifests most significantly when two countries decide to train together in the military domain. Because training together exposes one force to the strengths and weaknesses of the other. As a natural consequence, the rigorous and stressful nature of military training also fosters strong bonhomie and camaraderie, which lasts a lifetime. The Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF) operates primarily in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian sea, with a focus on protecting the kingdom's maritime interests, including its extensive coastline and critical infrastructure. Further, the RSNF has been modernizing its fleet, incorporating advanced ships and technology to enhance its operational capabilities. The growing roles and responsibilities of the Royal Saudi Navy have necessitated the need for well-trained military personnel and greater exposure to global practices and training. Also read: After navy warships, US orders submarine deployment in Middle East amid Israel-Iran war threat The Indian Navy's capabilities and prowess are on display for all to see, especially, in the complex and long-drawn operations that are undertaken far from home shores. The anti-piracy operation undertaken onboard the MV Ruen, leading to the arrest of 35 pirates and the release of 17 hostages, witnessed the impressive levels of coordination between Indian Naval surface assets, air assets, and the personnel and military leaders involved. Such operations stand testimony to the rigorous training and professional standards that are being imparted at Indian defence training institutions and facilities. Therefore, it is only natural that more friendly foreign nations collaborate with Indian armed forces on joint training and joint exercises.

Several countries in West Asia, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, have expressed grave concerns about the conduct of Pakistani expatriates and the labour force, a recent report has found.

The issue was brought to light by Dr Arshad Mahmood, Secretary of Overseas Pakistanis, during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on Overseas Pakistanis.

Arshad has noted that several Gulf countries have raised reservations about the behaviour of overseas Pakistanis in matters related to work ethics, attitudes, and criminal activities.

In the UAE, Pakistanis are involved in 50 per cent of crimes, the report said while citing the communication by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Additionally, there have been concerns about "inappropriate" behaviour, such as making videos in front of women in Dubai.

Kuwait has raised specific issues regarding Pakistani nurses who allegedly refuse to perform certain job-related duties, placing the burden on ward boys for regular tasks. These nurses reportedly do not attempt to learn the local language and seek to move to Europe after a short stay in Kuwait.

In Qatar, officials from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis reported that Pakistani labourers have been found refusing to wear safety helmets during work.

Earlier in September 2023, officials had said that Pakistani beggars travel to countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia under the pretext of 'Ziarat' (pilgrimage) and subsequently engage in begging. Official data states that Pakistani nationals account for 90 per cent of beggars arrested in these countries.

We turn our attention to the growing economic and trading ties between china and Saudi Arabia. Chinese investors are pouring money into two new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track Saudi Arabian shares. This is driven by the demand surge for international assets due to the terrible performance of domestic stocks.

Growing economic ties between China and Saudi in focus

Chinese investors are pouring money into two new Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) that track Saudi Arabian shares. This is driven by the demand surge for international assets due to the terrible performance of domestic stocks.

On their debut in Shanghai and Shenzhen on July 16, the Saudi-focused ETFs had a brisk start. Both funds soared over the daily 10 per cent limit on their first two trading days. Managers alerted the exchanges that the company's share price premium above its net asset value had grown too high. This led to their suspension for a portion of July 18.

An explanation for the excitement over the two ETFs could be the strengthening of China's and Saudi Arabia's economic and trade links.

A slew of multi-billion dollar partnerships spanning the tech industry, solar power, and electric cars have been announced in recent months by firms and sovereign funds from both sides.

Nelson Yan, co-chief investment officer at Fosun Wealth International in Hong Kong, said, 'Chinese investors are thirsty for better returns from overseas assets as the yield from China assets is too thin.' Yan added, 'The relationship between China and Saudi Arabia is good, investment-wise, and the geopolitics risk is smaller.'

The bet on Saudi Arabian stocks is hardly the first instance where Chinese investors have become smitten with the stocks of a specific nation. Optimism over ties between the two nations has investors keen to learn more, even though the Saudi market may seem more exotic to Chinese investors than US or Japanese shares.

The two Saudi Arabian Exchange-Traded Funds follow the performance of the FTSE Saudi Arabia index. The index ranks financials, basic commodities, and energy businesses as its top three components.

Three-quarters of the measure is accounted for by Saudi National Bank, Al Rajhi Bank, and Saudi Aramco. Is this a reflection of Saudi being a game changer? Is the kingdom gaining prominence in its new avatar? These themes will be in focus as Saudi transitions away from oil-related activity.

Saudi Arabia to host inaugural Olympics Esports Games in 2025, confirms IOC

Saudi Arabia officially ended its 50-year 'Petrodollar' agreement with the United States, shifting to a multicurrency system for oil sales.

This transition allows the kingdom to sell oil in various currencies and is a welcome sign for those countries looking at options other than the dollar use.

Now, let's understand the Saudi-US deal for pegging the dollar for global oil sales.

The dollar's dominance was influenced by an agreement between Saudi Arabia and the US in which the kingdom agreed to exchange US dollars for crude oil shipments.

So, after the historic deal in 1974, much of the world followed a dollar-based price in the international oil market.

The shift away from the so-called Petrodollar deal by Saudi Arabia would alter the global economic landscape and threaten the dollar's dominance in international trade, even though the kingdom has not officially acknowledged the shift away from the greenback completely.

BRICS & multi-currency trade

This move coincides with Saudi Arabia's recent participation as a guest nation at the BRICS outreach ministerial meeting in Russia.

BRICS, now comprising 10 full members, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, UAE, and Ethiopia, is pushing for greater use of local currencies in international trade and financial transactions.

The BRICS meeting, held for the first time since the group's expansion in 2023, emphasised the necessity for reforms in International Financial Institutions, including the IMF and World Bank.

Meanwhile, both China & Russia have called out the West for 'building walls' & disrupting global trade.

Why is this happening?

The broader rhetoric of financial sanctions as a geopolitical tool by the US is driving these decisions of countries trying to move away from the dollar for global trade settlements.

The recent sanctions by the US and its Western allies on Russia to isolate it from the global financial system are a significant reason, as other countries worry about similar consequences in the future.

While Russia has managed to trade and expand outside the dollar-denominated markets, the sanctions have weighed on its exports and imports.

'Weaponisation' of foreign exchange reserves?

According to a poll by the UBS Group, central bank reserve managers are increasingly worried about the safety of their foreign currency holdings.

The poll respondents attributed this rising worry to the rising global geopolitical risk.

The so-called "weaponisation" of foreign exchange reserves was deemed a high risk by one-third of the participants, double the number from the previous year.

For 87 per cent of the 40 central banks polled by UBS, the situation in West Asia, increasing tensions between China and the US, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine were the top concerns.

With the risk that if hostilities intensify, central banks could face sanctions, seizures, or asset tapping, the viability of FX reserves as a viable option is being questioned.

The proposal to use the proceedings from Russia's frozen foreign-currency assets to aid in Ukraine's reconstruction endangers the usefulness of FX reserves, the safest and most liquid way for a nation to hold its money.

De-dollarisation jumps ahead?

If these worries cause people to flee dollar-denominated assets, the dominance of the US currency could be further challenged.

Global central banks, which manage the world's foreign exchange reserves, hold an average dollar amount of 55 per cent in their import war chest, which has remained relatively unchanged from 56 per cent a year ago.

However, that proportion has steadily declined from 67 per cent in 2021.

About 8 per cent of the respondents reported increasing their yen holdings, and 25 per cent said they increased their euro allocations in an attempt to diversify away from the dollar in their reserve mix.

As geopolitical risks rise, central banks are also increasing their gold reserves.

Some analysts think that political forces will use currency reserves as a weapon and that the dollar will suffer as a result.

What Saudi's decision to end the 'Petrodollar' deal mean?

Saudi Arabia “warned” G7 nations that it might sell off some of the European debt holdings if the group decides to seize all $300 billion of foreign exchange of Russia, reported Bloomberg.

The probable move by G7 nations was seen as support to Ukraine in the ongoing war against Russia. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman launched a veiled threat to one of the most powerful groups of nations, showcasing the Saudi’s growing diplomatic clout on the world stage.

The warning by Mohammed Bin Salman is being seen as a major balance of power in the Ukraine-Russia war, which has almost led to the isolation of Russia by the Western countries.

The Saudi finance ministry’s opposition is said to have played a role in shaping the G7’s ultimate decision to tap only the profits generated by the frozen assets, rather than seizing them entirely.

Saudi Arabia’s intentions remain unclear

The actual intentions behind Saudi Arabia’s warning to G7 remain unclear. However, there is speculation that Riyadh was driven by self-interest, fearing that such a seizure might set a dangerous precedent for other countries in the future.

Some experts also see this as Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with Russia, given the close ties that Riyadh has maintained with Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, including their joint leadership of the OPEC+ oil cartel.

The incident is also seen as Riyadh’s way of swaying BRICS nations, in order to become a member of the group, Bloomberg reported. The report noted that as these countries gain economic and diplomatic strength, they are increasingly able to challenge and shape global policy decisions that were once primarily dictated by Western nations.

The Saudi position on seizing Russian foreign assets also reflects a broader trend where issues like the Ukraine conflict are becoming a problem between the West and other nations. Much similar to how the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza has become a point of contention among world leaders of various nations, and it is no longer just a regional issue.

The Saudi threat also serves as a stark reminder of the Kingdom’s significant financial leverage. With net foreign reserves of $445 billion and a sovereign wealth fund approaching $1 trillion in assets, Saudi Arabia’s financial decisions can have far-reaching implications for global markets and geopolitics.

Ultimately, the G7 and EU agreed to a financial structure that will provide Ukraine with about $50 billion of fresh aid, using the profits generated by Russia’s blocked funds. The compromise solution reflects the delicate balancing act that Western powers must now perform, as we move towards a more multipolar world.

During the Neolithic period, the people who lived in north-western Saudi Arabia have remained a mystery.

It has been said that the period saw a shift in the humans who started controlling food production and started to settle in communities along with domesticated animals and practised agriculture.

A team of Australian researchers published a study on monumental buildings in the journal Levant, which are called "standing stone circles."

The new findings are helping people in rewriting about those who lived in the land of Saudi Arabia between 6,500 and 8,000 years ago.

The evidence hints at the things they ate, the tools they used and the jewellery they wore. It becomes clearer how the people in those times figured out complex ways to survive on the land for millennia.

How the project was carried out by researchers?

Nearly 431 standing stone circles present in the AlUla and Khaybar regions of north-west Saudi Arabia were studied by the team of researchers, as part of the ongoing project.

Among those 431 structures, 52 were surveyed in detail and 11 of them were also excavated.

The new findings were made after analysing some buildings present on the Harrat 'Uwayrid, a volcanic plateau which was created more than a millennia ago.

A range of modern and traditional techniques was used by the researchers to manage the practical limitations of working in remote and rugged landscapes.
