Not all was well between India and England after the Manchester Test ended in a stalemate on Sunday (July 27), leaving hosts leading the series 2-1 with one match remaining. It was Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja who took the centre stage when the former had offered a handshake to end the match in a draw. India’s refusal to shake hands and continue playing was justified as Jadeja and Washington Sundar both approached their tons in the Manchester Test.

Stokes-Jadeja take centre stage
With Jadeja unbeaten on 89 and Sundar on 80, Stokes offered a handshake (offer for a draw), but the Indian batters were clear with their intent and wanted to score their respective tons. After the refusal, Stokes gave the ball to part-time bowlers Joe Root and Harry Brook as they bowled the consequent five overs, helping the Indian duo to reach their respective tons at Old Trafford. Immediately after the hundreds, Indian batters decided to accept the offer for a draw, but things did not go well. After the draw was accepted, English players approached Indian batters and offered a handshake, but Stokes did not shake hands with Jadeja initially. He went to Washington Sundar and returned before Jadeja offered a word to the English captain. They would later shake hands after a heated conversation in the middle, but with no eye contact. Interestingly, the matter did not escalate and at the time of writing was not reported to the match referee. ALSO READ | IND vs ENG 2025: Bumrah unlocks unwanted record in Manchester as England punish India on day 4
What happened on Day 5 of the Manchester Test?
Trailing by 237 runs at the start of Day 5, India lost KL Rahul in the first session on 90 before Shubman Gill fell for 103. Rahul was unfortunate to miss out on a ton, but Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja helped India reach 425/4 before the match was called off for a draw. This was just the second time in Brendon McCullum’s England coaching role that a Test match had ended in a stalemate.

Ravindra Jadeja notched up his second Test hundred, and Washington Sundar completed his maiden as the pair helped India pull off a draw in the Manchester Test against England, with the five-match Test series still alive. India, on the brink of another loss in this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy up until tea on day four, just lost two more wickets in the remaining four sessions, giving themselves a shot at tying the series in the final Test at the Oval in London. It, however, is only the second draw in the Bazball era, with the first one happening at the same venue during the home Ashes. Although a draw at Old Trafford still has England's nose in the front (2-1), it keeps the doors open for India to take confidence from this game and use it to its advantage to win the final Test in London and level the series 2-2. Jadeja, Washington hit tons as India pull off draw in Manchester Test; series alive

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has done his bit to enter the record books during the Manchester Test against England. The ace cricketer has been in brilliant touch with the bat this series, scoring multiple fifties, while playing several handy knocks. Being the most-capped Indian player on the team sheet, Jadeja brought his experience into this series, helping India push for a draw at Old Trafford. Although his wickets column has looked gloomy, there’s no doubt about his batting in the four contested matches thus far. During day five of the ongoing Test, he joined former West Indies great Sir Gary Sobers on two lists. Jadeja was Team India’s highest wicket-taker in the first innings, returning with four to his name. He followed it up with a magnificent half-century in the second innings, with his fellow all-rounder Washington Sundar also completing his. India’s Jadeja is only the third player ever and the first Indian to do so, having completed over 1030 runs (and counting) and 34 Test wickets in the UK. Jadeja also equalled Sobers’ record for hitting the most fifties by a batter batting at number six or lower in a Test series in England. His latest fifty saw him go equal with perhaps the greatest all-rounder of all time (5) on this list. While Sobers has five fifties in eight innings (at that order), Jadeja also has as many in the same number of outings in the UK. He, however, is likely to play the next Test at the Oval, with a chance to go past the Caribbean legend. Meanwhile, former West Indies gloveman Jeff Dujon is third on the list, having hit four half-centuries in England in five innings, and New Zealand’s Tom Blundell is fourth with the same credentials.

Ravindra Jadeja only player from 2014 Manchester Test vs England and he was India's worst batter

Former India coach Anil Kumble, under whom the team rose of number 1 in Test rankings in 2016-17 season, has questioned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's intent on final day (Jul 14) of Lord's Test vs England. India lost the match by 22 runs with Jadeja stranded on the other end on 61. The all-rounder, Kumble says, could have shown a bit more intent and taken a chance. Jadeja played 181 balls in his marathon innings, hitting only four fours and a six. In the second session, Bumrah showed immense heart before playing the nothing shot to get out as India added 51 runs in 30.3 overs for the loss of one wicket. The fourth Test starts after a 10-day gap on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The record, before Jadeja and Bumrah, was with Kiran More and Sanjeev Sharma who had added 25 runs in the fourth innings of a 1990 Test at the same venue. India, however, lost the match in the end by 22 runs in an anti-climatic finish.

Jadeja, Bumrah create partnership history for 9th wicket for India in Lord's loss vs England

England triumphed over India in the third Test of this five-match Anderson-Tendulkar series at the Lord’s, taking a 2-1 lead. The hosts defended an under-par total of 192 on day five, dismissing India on 170 to win the match by 22 runs. Captain Ben Stokes stood out with the ball in hand, picking up three wickets, the same as Brydon Carse, with the returning Jofra Archer hogging all the limelight with his impactful dismissals, including removing two attacking batters in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in the second innings. From Shubman Gill to Joe Root: 5 fittest players in India vs England Test series

The second Test between India and England at Edgbaston has been a solid one-sided affair thus far, thanks to the Indian captain Shubman Gill and ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. While Gill hogged all the limelight for his career-best 269 after being sent out to bat first, Jadeja received massive praise for his valiant 89, helping India recover from a possible mid-inning collapse. He stitched a brilliant 203-run stand for the sixth wicket with Gill, propelling India to 587 in the first innings. Jadeja, however, almost paid a price for it, breaking a key BCCI rule to get there, but is unlikely to face any sanction for it. Following India’s horror show Down Under this time, the BCCI tightened rules for players, one of which states that all players, regardless, must travel together in the team bus to the venue, hotel or training ground, disallowing anyone to travel separately. Jadeja broke this rule ahead of day two play at Edgbaston, reaching the ground earlier than his teammates to hit the nets. IND vs ENG: Ravindra Jadeja to escape BCCI sanction despite breaking key rule on day 2 at Edgbaston

Ravindra Jadeja has been around for a long time and the all-rounder is an integral part of the Indian Test set up for nearly a decade. After Rohit Sharma decided to retire from Test cricket earlier this month with Virat Kohli following the suit, Jadeja may have thought about leading the side, at least on interim basis, with India set to tour England for five Tests next month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, named Shubman Gill as Rohit successor in Test with Rishabh Pant being his deputy. IPL: 5 iconic last-over thrillers that left fans breathless

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced its contract list with 34 players being selected across four categories. In top contract category A+ players are automatic choice in all three formats and the list features four players: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah.
Out of the four players, Rohit, Virat and Jadeja have already announced their retirement from T20Is after India won the T20 World Cup in June 2024. Hence, the question came up that how retired players could be a part of top category if they no longer play a format.

Why Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja were offered A+ contract despite retiring from T20Is?

Speaking to news agency PTI, an official said on condition on anonymity: "The period of fresh central contract is from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025. But the assessment year is October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024. Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja played the T20 World Cup final in June, 2024 and hence at that time, they were all-format regulars. Going by that technicality, they are supposed to be in A+ category."
"Similarly, Ishan (2 World Cup matches) and Shreyas played 15 ODIs and a handful Tests in the 2023-24 season and hence got their respective categories," he added.
Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan got back into the contract set up after missing out last year while Rishabh Pant, who was in B category last year, has been promoted to A category.
Players get INR 7 crore yearly for being in A+ category, INR 5 crore in A category, INR 3 crore in B category and INR 1 crore in C category.
The BCCI has also included seven players in the contract list for the first time as well. These are - Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, Abhishek Sharma, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep, Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana.

Why Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja got A+ contract from BCCI despite retiring from T20Is

Cricket has seen several great fielders over time, but none as athletic, stylish, or intimidating as former South Africa great Jonty Rhodes; it’s almost like fielding is a synonym for his name. For the longest time since his emergence on the international scene, Jonty has remained head and shoulders ahead of everyone, even to date. However, ex-India seamer and IPL franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) head coach Ashish Nehra differs here, handpicking an Indian gun fielder mightier than Rhodes.
Ahead of his side’s home game against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday in IPL 2025, the broadcaster (Star Sports) asked Nehra to pick his best fielder in cricket history, to which he replied, ‘Ravindra Jadeja’ straightaway.
Meanwhile, Nehra played alongside some of the best in-ring and outfielders, those with great throwing arms and a few with all these traits. From sharing field space with Jonty himself, alongside his ex-teammates Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers, and not to forget the dynamite Australian pair of Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds, Nehra perhaps has witnessed greatness from close quarters.

But despite all of that, he chose Jadeja ahead of them all.
“I have seen a lot of big fielders; some are good in the outfield, some inside, like Jonty Rhodes, he is the best inside the circle. If you speak about all-round fielding, AB de Villiers’ name comes in, but even Andrew Symonds and Jadeja.
“But I would put Jadeja ahead of them. It's not because of his age. When he came in 2008-09 and now, he is still the same. It is his fitness, I don't know what he eats. If he is eating something different, he should tell us,” Nehra explained.

Gill drops hints on Rabada’s return

GT captain Shubman Gill provided a massive update on his team’s ace overseas seamer, Kagiso Rabada, who left the camp midway through the tournament to head home for personal reasons.
After electing to bowl first against the table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) on a hot Ahmedabad afternoon on Saturday, Gill revealed Rabada would relink with the GT squad in around ten days, bolstering their already-strong-looking pace attack.
As things stand, GT is third on the points table with four wins from six matches.

IPL 2025: GT coach Ashish Nehra handpicks THIS India fielder bigger than Jonty Rhodes

Delhi Capitals (DC) continued their dream run in IPL 2025 with a third consecutive win, defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 24 runs at the Chepauk Stadium on Saturday. Powered by a commanding KL Rahul half-century and a masterful spin display from Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav, DC now sit comfortably at the top of the table. Meanwhile, CSK's struggles continued, slipping to eighth with just one win in four games.
Opting to bat first, DC suffered an early setback as Jake Fraser-McGurk departed for a duck in the very first over, courtesy of Khaleel Ahmed. However, KL Rahul and Abishek Porel steadied the ship, adding quick runs during the powerplay and taking DC past 50.
Porel looked in fine touch before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed him for 33 off 20 balls right after the powerplay. Axar Patel joined Rahul at 54/2 and announced his arrival with a six off his very first delivery, but his cameo of 21 off 14 ended in the 11th over at the hands of Noor Ahmad.
From there, Rahul took charge, accelerating with the help of Sameer Rizvi. The duo smashed 17 runs off Noor in the 15th over and brought up their 50-run partnership in just 27 balls. Rahul reached his first IPL fifty for DC in 33 balls, mixing elegance with aggression.

Rizvi was dismissed for 20 off 15 in the 16th over, and Stubbs came in to add a fiery finish. He hammered 15 runs off Mukesh Choudhary in the 19th over, while Rahul continued to anchor the innings. The DC skipper finally fell for a classy 77 off 51 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) in the penultimate over to Pathirana.
Stubbs stayed unbeaten on 24 off 12 as DC ended at 183/6 in 20 overs. Khaleel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 2/25 in his four overs. Jadeja was miserly, giving away just 19 runs and picking up a wicket. Pathirana (1/31) and Noor (1/36) chipped in with a wicket each, while Ashwin (0/21) kept things tight without any breakthroughs. Mukesh Choudhary endured a rough day, leaking 50 runs in four wicketless overs.

Vipraj, Kuldeep choke CSK’s chase

CSK’s chase started shakily as Rachin Ravindra was caught and bowled by Mukesh Kumar for just 3. Things worsened when Mitchell Starc removed CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for 5, thanks to a sharp catch by McGurk in the deep. CSK were 20/2 in under three overs.
Devon Conway and Vijay Shankar tried to rebuild, but Vipraj Nigam's clever googly removed Conway for 13. Dube came in and struck a few blows, but Vipraj struck again, dismissing him for 18, with Stubbs holding on at long-on.
Kuldeep Yadav then trapped Jadeja lbw for just 2, leaving CSK tottering at 74/5. Amidst the collapse, MS Dhoni walked out to a thunderous ovation. Alongside Vijay Shankar, he tried to stage a late rescue act. Vijay fought valiantly, scoring a composed 69* off 54 balls (5 fours, 1 six), while Dhoni chipped in with 30* off 26 (1 four, 1 six). But with the required rate soaring, the pair couldn’t push CSK over the line.
CSK ended at 158/5, falling short by 24 runs.

India captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could face demotion from the A+ category to the A category in BCCI’s annual central contract list for the upcoming season. Per the latest reports, there would be at least three new entrants to the contract list, including that of an opener, an all-rounder and a seamer.
Last year, the BCCI turned heads with two bold calls by removing two mainstream batters, Shreyas Iyer and gloveman Ishan Kishan, from the contract list. Though the board was right in doing so after both denied obeying BCCI orders to play Ranji Trophy matches, the report said Iyer would return to the list, but the same cannot be said for Kishan.

Meanwhile, the left-handed batter recently made headlines for his match-winning hundred for his new IPL team, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and on the other hand, Iyer guided his new team, Punjab Kings, home against Gujarat Titans, in the side’s tournament opener.
Returning to the three stalwarts, all belonged to the top category, reserved for only those who play all three formats. Now that Rohit, Virat and Jadeja retired from the T20Is following India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year, the trio shall be demoted to the A category. A Dainik Jagran report suggested that only ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah retains his place in the A+ category.

Any promotions on the cards?

While the newly-appointed ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill, currently listed in the A category, could be promoted to the A+ category, rookie opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (B category) could also get promoted to the A category. Another player who can get a promotion is all-rounder Axar Patel (B category), who took massive strides across formats, playing handy roles in helping India win two ICC titles in two years.
However, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana and Abhishek Sharma are the three confirmed entries to the C category, where a player should have represented India in a minimum of three Tests or eight ODIs or 10 T20Is within a specific period.
