Whether one accepts this or not, captaining India in all formats of the game is a pressure job," said Kaneria.

'Far-reaching decision': Ex-Pakistan cricketer on MS Dhoni handing over CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have witnessed a change in captaincy for the first time since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 as MS Dhoni passed over the baton to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022. Dhoni stepped down from captaincy earlier this week as Jadeja was handed over captaincy just a couple of days ahead of their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday (March 26).

Many had expected Dhoni to continue leading the side this year having been retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction last month, however, the former CSK skipper once again sprung a surprise in his own style ahead of the season. However, the move was in the making for quite some time and Dhoni had discussed his decision to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming last season.

After CSK's opening game of the ongoing IPL 2022 season against KKR on Saturday, Fleming opened up on the change in captaincy and revealed he spoke about it with Dhoni last year. Fleming also said Dhoni wanted to give Jadeja a clean slate as captain heading into the season so the timing of the decision was his own.

"We talked about it. It's been something MS and I talked about during the last season," Fleming said on Saturday.

"The timing was MS's call. I think it's been documented that he wanted to give Jadeja the clean slate going into the series so it was communicated with Mr. Srinivasan and conveyed to the team. We 100% respect that," added the CSK head coach.

Dhoni and Fleming enjoyed a great captain-coach relationship for CSK as they together took the franchise to greater heights. Fleming has been the head coach of the four-time champions since 2009 and together with Dhoni, he managed to formulate strategies and plans which have worked for the side over the years.

However, Fleming admitted the plans will now have to change a bit with Jadeja taking over captaincy and Dhoni no longer in charge of the team. He insisted having Dhoni still in the squad as a player and utilising his experience to groom Jadeja will be helpful for CSK.

"There's going to be a bit of a transition period as we develop the relationship with Jadeja and also have MS there so you don't just discard a player just because he doesn't have the captaincy tag. You develop the new captain and work with the experience we've got, and thankfully we've got quite a bit of that. It's a little bit of change, but we'll work through that nicely," said the CSK head coach.

CSK made a shaky start to their IPL 2022 campaign under new captain Jadeja as they suffered a six-wicket defeat against KKR in their opening game of the season. In what was a shambolic batting performance, CSK managed to post a low-key total of only 131 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as KKR cruised to a comfortable win.

IPL 2022: CSK's Ravindra Jadeja registers unique record in opener against KKR

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Ravindra Jadeja is more than capable of handling the responsibility of captaincy for his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The legendary MS Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain earlier this week to hand over the reins to Jadeja.

Dhoni led CSK in all twelve seasons right from the inception of the tournament in 2008. He was part of the Rising Pune Supergiants side for two years in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from IPL. Dhoni remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history with nine finals and four titles to his name as captain.

While many had expected Dhoni to continue leading CSK this year, Dhoni decided to hand over the reins to Jadeja looking at the future. Reacting to Jadeja's appointment as the new skipper of the side, Shastri said the added responsibility to do wonders for the Indian all-rounder.

"Jaddu, my friend, good luck. I am sure you are more than capable of handling the job as captain. I think he has got added responsibility and that will do him wonders," Shastri said on Star Sports.

"Get out there and enjoy yourself like you normally do and be a good captain. Good luck with the toss, start winning many," Shastri added.

Shastri, who worked closely with Jadeja during his stint as the head coach of the Indian team from 2017 to 2021, said he has seen the all-rounder evolve in the last three years. Apart from being a superb fielder and a brilliant spinner, Jadeja has massively improved as a batter and Shastri believes he will be the livewire for CSK.

"He has been an outstanding cricketer for India. No. 1 in the world rankings when it comes to being an all-rounder. I have seen him evolve over the last 5 years and, in particular, the last 3 years," said Shastri.

"The way he is focussed on his batting. The time he has spent at the nets, the self-belief he has brought into the game. Apart from being an outstanding fielder and doing the job with the ball, I think he is a livewire in the team. He is very energetic, he is very positive and I am most happy to see he is back from a knee injury," he added.

Ravindra Jadeja more than capable of handling captaincy for CSK, says former India head coach Ravi Shastri

MS Dhoni left the entire cricketing fraternity in shock as he announced his resignation as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just days ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Dhoni handed over the reins to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, bringing an end to a glorious tenure as the captain of the four-time champions.

Dhoni captained CSK in a total of twelve seasons and led to a staggering nine finals and four titles. CSK managed to qualify for the playoffs in eleven out of the twelve seasons under Dhoni's captaincy, missing out only once in 2020. Dhoni led CSK right from the inception of IPL in 2008 to 2021.

Dhoni was expected to continue leading CSK this season after having been retained by the franchise for a sum of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million). However, he decided to step away to ensure he can be around and groom Jadeja as the new leader of the side going forward. Jadeja was CSK's first-choice retention for a sum of a whopping Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million).

Reacting to Dhoni handing over captaincy to Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022, former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) superstar AB de Villiers said he was not surprised by the move. De Villiers said it was the right time for Dhoni to step away having led the team to their fourth IPL title last season.

“I am not surprised by MS’ move. I am actually quite happy for him. Having carried that burden for so long, people might think that it is easy to be captain, but it really wears you down. You have sleepless nights sometimes, especially when you don’t have good seasons," De Villiers said on VUSports.

"But I think he stepped away at exactly the right time, having won the last IPL. The season before the last would have hurt him a lot. To come back and win the trophy and then say 'I’ll still play but someone else takes over and I’ll be there to support', it’s the perfect move.”

Both CSK and KKR have had a change in their leadership ahead of the IPL 2022 opener. While MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain to hand over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja, KKR have a new skipper in Shreyas Iyer this time around. Both teams will also be missing some of their key players for the first game of the season.

CSK will be without pacer Deepak Chahar and star all-rounder Moeen Ali while KKR will miss the services of both Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch. Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated clash between the two sides, De Villiers has backed CSK to beat KKR and get off to a winning start this season.

De Villiers pointed out how CSK have a quite similar team from their title-winning campaign last year and Dhoni stepping aside as captain doesn't affect them much. The South Africa legend said CSK know how to win games and the experience in their squad will help them in crossing the line against KKR at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

“CSK all the way. They come off that confidence from winning the last IPL. They have a similar team set-up even though (MS) Dhoni is not captain. I don’t think it’s going to play a big role. He’s still on the park and he’s still got the brain. He’ll be in Jaddu’s ears, thinking about strategies and some field placings," said De Villiers on VUSport Scouts.

“They have a lot of experience and they just know how to cross the line and win games. They know how to go into first games and how to go into last games. There have been a lot of changes in the KKR squad. I think CSK will take the first game," he added.

De Villiers is not a part of IPL 2022 as he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier this year. The South African great will go down as one of the greatest to have played in the IPL but will regret that fact that he never managed to lift the IPL trophy despite having an illustrious career.

'They know how to win games': AB de Villiers predicts winner of IPL 2022 opener between CSK and KKR

It will mark a new dawn in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer lead their respective teams out in the opening game of IPL 2022 on Saturday (March 26). While Jadeja will be in charge of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) having replaced the legendary MS Dhoni at the helm, Iyer will be captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the first time.

The two teams had last met in the final of IPL 2022 last year where CSK came out on top against KKR to lift their fourth IPL trophy. Dhoni is no more in charge of the side but will continue being a leader in the CSK squad and play as a pure wicket-keeper batter this season.

Eoin Morgan, who had led KKR to the final last season, is no more part of the squad. KKR have revamped their team significantly with the additions of the likes of Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Sam Billings, Chamika Karunaratne and Aaron Finch among others this time around.

CSK, meanwhile have managed to retain their core squad from their title-winning campaign last year as they have managed to get back the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo and Robin Uthappa among others. Both teams will be missing the services of a couple of their key players in the opener.

Under Dhoni, CSK won the championship on four occasions (in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021). In addition, they qualified for the playoffs on all seasons barring 2020 and ended as runners-up on five occasions. Given that Dhoni is on the last lap of his IPL career, speculations intensified regarding his possible retirement post IPL 2022 edition.

In this regard, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said as per Indian Express, “No, I don’t think (this is going to be his last season). He will carry on."

“We have always respected the decision of MS. He has been a pillar of strength for us. He will continue to be a pillar of strength and he will guide Jaddu (Jadeja) and the other members of the team. He is expecting a smooth transition from him to Jaddu and that’s why he has taken the decision. As a captain and player, who has always cared for CSK, he must have taken the decision in the best interest of CSK,” Viswanathan added.

Dhoni, thus, signed off as the IPL captain with most wins, only to have lead in more than 200 games and second-highest run-getter as skipper.

The man, the legacy: IPL shares heartfelt journey of MS Dhoni as CSK captain post sudden resignation

MS Dhoni has stepped down as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain ahead of IPL 2022. The news came just two days prior to the forthcoming season's opening game, where the four-time winners and defending champions CSK will lock horns with last year's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26.

In CSK's official statement, it read, "MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of CSK & picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent CSK this season and beyond."

After the sudden change of guard in the CSK camp, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra also reacted to the development and made a big claim on his IPL future. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out, "MS Dhoni has declared that he is no longer the king and he will now only be a person in the kingdom who'll serve the king. But the reality is that he is the king and the captain. He is the king of CSK. It is almost confirmed now that he won't play next year."

"Earlier this year too, I'm sure he did not want the franchise to retain him as spending money on retaining him would not have made the team stronger, as he may not be there for next season. This is why he asked Jadeja to be the first retainee, as he might not stay if he is not given INR 16 crore," Chopra further stated.

Lavishing huge praise on Dhoni's personality, Chopra also claimed that the former CSK captain won't interfere in Jadeja's decision-making unless he is asked for a piece of advice or any assistance on the field.

In this regard, Chopra added, "When MS Dhoni is not the captain, he becomes non-intrusive. He will only talk when needed or when you go to him. He's is not someone who'll walk up to you and impose his opinions. He prefers to be on the sidelines until someone walks up to him for advice."

With Dhoni's resignation as captain, the official statement of the franchise read: "MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of CSK & picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead team. After Jadeja's appointment, 'Chinna Thala' Suresh Raina reacted to the development and wrote on Twitter, "Absolutely thrilled for my brother. I can't think of anyone better to take over the reins of a franchise we both had grown up in. All the best @imjadeja. It's an exciting phase and I'm sure you will live up to all the expectations and love #yellow #csk #WhistlePodu"

Jadeja slammed an unbeaten 175-run knock before picking up nine wickets across Sri Lanka's two innings to emerge as the Man of the Match for India in the series-opener in Mohali. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the annual contracts for its players for the upcoming season. BCCI awards the contracts based on the performances of the players across formats in the previous cycle. While some are promoted to upper categories, some are demoted based on their performances.

As the details of the BCCI annual contracts for the 2022-23 season emerged, a number of major changes were witnessed. Senior players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma were demoted to the Grade B category while the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel were promoted from Grade C to B.

However, there was no change in the A+ category - which is the highest bracket. BCCI retained only three players in the top category with captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and pacer Jasprit Bumrah making the cut. The players in the A+ category are paid Rs 7 crore (INR 70 million) annually while those in the A, B and C category earn Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has questioned the absence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from the A+ category. Jadeja, who has been an integral member of India's squad across formats, has been kept in the A category. Chopra said the left-arm all-rounder's name should be in the top category considering his recent performances for the country.

"Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah will get 7 crores rupees. There is no change in that category. And I feel why not Sir Jadeja? Sir Jadeja's name should also be there in this list," said Chopra in a video on his YouTube channel.

While he backed Jadeja to be promoted to the A+ category, Chopra also said the likes of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant will also head to the top bracket soon considering their importance to the Indian side. While Pant is India's first-choice wicket-keeper across formats, Rahul has also been a crucial cog in the batting line-up across formats.

"I feel Ravindra Jadeja's name will go in the A+ category when the next contract renewal happens because his performance has been so good. His name is in Grade A currently. I feel Jadeja and KL Rahul's name will start going to A+ next time," said the former India cricketer.

Thus, Rohit -- who made his Test captaincy debut with a big win -- heaped praise on the wily off-spinner after India went 1-0 up in the series. R Ashwin is an all-time great: Rohit hails spinner after he becomes India's 2nd highest wicket-taker in Tests

Ravindra Jadeja was the hero of India's thumping win over Sri Lanka in the recently-concluded first Test of the ongoing two-match series between the two sides. Jadeja slammed an unbeaten 175 and picked up a total of nine wickets in the game as India thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

Jadeja, who recently made his comeback from injury, looked in splendid touch and took the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners during his brilliant knock. He looked well on course to slam his maiden double hundred in Test cricket before India decided to declare their first innings on 574/8 as Jadeja fell just 25 runs short of his double ton.

Nonetheless, his magnificent all-round show helped India outclass Sri Lanka by an innings to script a comprehensive win. While many lauded Jadeja for his fabulous knock of unbeaten 175, former India opener Gautam Gambhir was asked if it is the best knock the India all-rounder has played so far in his Test career.

While stating that 'stats can be misleading', Gambhir said he doesn't feel Jadeja's 175 not out is the best knock he has played in his career so far. Gambhir believes the star all-rounder's crucial half-centuries and other important knocks overseas would have made him more confident.

"I don't think so. I feel the innings Ravindra Jadeja played in Australia or the knocks he has played outside India, he will get more confidence from that. Stats can be very misleading," Gambhir explained.

"There was a time after the century where he was just milking - Dhananjaya de Silva, Asalanka and Embuldeniya were bowling but if you talk about Australia or England, the 40 or 50-run contributions there are probably much more important than this innings," added the former India opener.

Jadeja, Ashwin spin India to thumping win by an innings and 222 runs in 1st Test against Sri Lanka

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja revealed he had himself suggested Indian team management to declare their first innings on 574/8 on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Jadeja was batting on 175 when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma declared the hosts' first innings on Saturday.

Rohit was criticised by many on social media for declaring early and not letting Jadeja reach his maiden double century in Test cricket. However, the India all-rounder later revealed it was his suggestion to declare the innings in order to make Sri Lankans bat as the pitch had variable bounce and the ball had started turning.

Indian skipper Rohit was captured on the camera having a discussion with spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was later sent to deliver a message to Jadeja before India decided to declare the innings. Fans felt Rohit could have let Jadeja complete his double hundred before taking the declaration call.

But Jadeja revealed it was an ideal situation for the hosts to declare and make the most of the conditions in Sri Lanka's first innings. "I also told them that there is variable bounce and deliveries have started turning. So I sent a message that there is something on offer from the strip and I suggested that we should put them in to bat now itself," Jadeja said.

"They were already tired fielding for nearly quarter to two days (five sessions). Since they were tired, it was not easy to play the big shots straightaway and bat for long hours. So plan was to declare quickly and exploit the fatigue of the opposition batters," he explained.

Warne breathed his last after suffering a suspected heart attack in Thailand. The sudden passing away of one of the greatest cricketers of all time has left fans and players around the world mourning.

Besides being one of the best cricketers to have represented Australia, Warne was also the first captain to have won the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warne led Rajasthan Royals (RR) to their maiden IPL title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008. The Rajasthan Royals squad back then had a number of rising superstars including the likes of Indian all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan.

Warne was an admirer of both the Indian youngsters and had predicted that the duo will go on to become superstars of Indian cricket in the years to come. As it turned out, Warne's predictions did come true with both Pathan and Jadeja doing well in their respective international careers.

While Pathan was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams, Jadeja is one of the best all-rounders in the world at present. Noted commentator Harsha Bhogle recalled Warne's comments about Jadeja in 2008 when the Aussie spin legend had said that 'this kid is a superstar' while praising the Indian all-rounder.

Bhogle tweeted how Warne loved Jadeja while recalling his comments. “He loved you Jaddu. Remember the time in ’08 at the DY Patil Stadium….He called you over and said to me “This kid is a rockstar”. We chatted more than once about you and he was very fond of you and of Yusuf,” Bhogle wrote.

Jadeja, who is currently in action for India in their longing first Test against Sri Lanka at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, responded to Bhogle's comments and said he still remembered Warne's words and that the news of his tragic demise was really sad. “Yes harsha bhai, I still remember that chat. Really sad news,” Jadeja responded.

Warne's Rajasthan Royals had defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final of IPL 2008 to lift the elusive trophy. The Royals have since failed to win their second IPL title.

Warne, who will go down as one of the greatest spinners of all time, is also known for his terrific leadership qualities and great reading of the game. He knew how to outsmart opposition batters and was a brilliant leader on and off the pitch. Warne played 145 Tests and 194 ODIs in his international career picking up a staggering 1001 wickets across formats.

Team India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series opener at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday (March 04). Former captain Virat Kohli headlined the day's proceedings as he featured in his 100th game in whites and, thus, joined an elite list of Indian cricketers to have done the same, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, etc.

Coming out to bat, after India won the toss and were 80/2, Kohli joined forces with No. 3 batter Hanuma Vihari and stitched an impressive 90-run stand for the third-wicket before falling for a good-looking 45 (76). On the other hand, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma (29), Mayank Agarwal (33), Vihari (58) and Shreyas Iyer (27) also got starts but were all back in the pavillion by the end of second session.

Speaking on the post-Tea show on Star Sports on Day 1 of the first Test, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir shared a word of advice for the Indian batters following their dismissals.

“One of the major concerns is that the bat is in the line of pads. When that happens, it is difficult to play deliveries that turn away as well as those that don't turn,” Gambhir noted.

Reflecting on Kohli and Mayank's dismissals, Gambhir said, "If you keep your bat ahead of your pad, you will be beaten only on one edge. When you look at Mayank Agarwal's dismissal, he was beaten on the inside edge. In Virat Kohli's case, he was beaten on the outside edge. So, it is very important to have your bat ahead of your pad.”

“This is usually taught in formative years. Nowadays, you play so much limited-overs cricket that you lose your basics, the good habits die down. You've concentrated significantly on fast bowling, so I believe Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin,” added Gambhir.

Riding on Rishabh Pant's 96 and Ravindra Jadeja's 45 not out India reached 357-6 at stumps on Day 1 in Mohali. They will like to stretch the total beyond the 450-run mark on Day 2.
