India beat Sri Lanka in 3rd T20I to clinch series 3-0, equal record for most T20I wins on the trot

Fit-again India allrounder Ravindra Jadeja is relishing his new role of batting in the middle-order and thanked skipper Rohit Sharma for showing faith and promoting him up the order.

The left-arm spin all-rounder returned to action after recovering from a knee injury, and in the second T20I against Sri Lanka he blasted his way to a 18-ball 45 not out batting at No 5 to help India notch up a series-clinching seven-wicket win here on Saturday.

“Yes, I’m enjoying batting at number five. I can take my time and I can pace my innings according to the situation,” Jadeja said at the post-match media interaction.

“I would like to thank Rohit because he trusts me and he believes in me that I can go out there and score runs for my team.

“So hopefully whenever I get an opportunity in future I’ll try and do my best, play according to the situation and be in the game for my team.” The 33-year-old missed the last two series against South Africa and the West Indies as he was undergoing rehab for his knee injury.

In his comeback match in the first T20I on Thursday, Jadeja was promoted to No 4 where he scored 3 not out from four balls as India posted 199 for 2 en route to a 62-run win.

Justifying his decision, skipper Rohit has said they “wanted more” from the “vastly-improved batter” Jadeja.

In the second T20I, India lost both Rohit (1) and Ishan Kishan (16) cheaply inside the powerplay, while Sanju Samson (39 from 25 balls) could not convert his start as they were in a tricky position at 128 for 3, needing 56 runs in the last seven overs when Jadeja walked in.

Jadeja looked in full flow and along with the in-form Shreyas Iyer (74 not out) put up an exceptional batting display to seal the chase with 17 balls to spare.

“I am feeling better, I am confident and I am good to go. I am glad that I played a good innings for my team. Hopefully, I will continue in the same in the upcoming games,” he said.

He said the wicket also helped a lot as the ball was coming nicely to the bat.

Ind vs SL: Ravindra Jadeja enjoying batting higher up for India, thanks skipper Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets to win the second and penultimate T20I, in Dharamshala, on Saturday evening (February 26) and clinch the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led India bowlers didn't have an easy ride versus the Islanders. Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a golden duck in the series opener, and Danushka Gunathilaka's opening stand (67 runs) ensured a good start for the visitors. While they did survive some close calls initially, the duo found their rhythm as the innings progressed. Against the run of play, Ravindra Jadeja struck to remove Gunathilaka for 38.

When it seemed Indian bowlers had managed to restrict the Lankans, skipper Dasun Shanaka's 19-ball 47 and Nissanka's calculative and well-compiled 53-ball 75 propelled SL to 183-5. Among Indian bowlers, Jadeja, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar remained expensive.

In reply, India's chase started with Rohit departing for 1. Ishan Kishan also failed to get going to be dismissed for cheap. The onus, this, shifted on in-form Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson. While Samson took some time before launching some biggies, Iyer played a sensational inning -- with a flurry of boundaries at regular intervals along with smart rotation of strike.

While India lost Samson, courtesy a blinder by B Fernando, Jadeja-Iyer completed the formalities as Lankans continued to be sloppy on the field and gave plenty of boundary-balls. Jadeja dominated the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Iyer (74 not out) to return with an 18-ball 45* (at a whopping strike-rate of 250).

With this win, India's best-ever winning streak in the format has now stretched to 11. Among Test-playing nations, Afghanistan top the list holding the first two spots. Now, India have joined the Afghans in the second position with 11 successive wins. If India inflict a clean sweep versus the Sri Lankans, they will come at par with Afghanistan at the top spot (12).

Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja keep India's winning streak alive, Men in Blue win T20I series vs Sri Lanka

India thrashed Sri Lanka by 62 runs in the first of the three-match T20I series on Thursday evening (February 24) to go 1-0 up in the series. With this win, India also attained their biggest winning streak in the shortest format (10).

Post India's back-to-back defeats in the opening two games of the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE, the Men in Blue have been on a roll with their unbeaten streak now stretching to ten games. By virtue of this, India became the second-Test playing nation to attain 10 successive wins (fourth overall).

In reply, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the steep run-chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also removed Kamil Mishara for cheap whereas Dinesh Chandimal, Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne fell after getting a start each. Rohit once again rotated his bowlers with ease as Bhuvi, Venkestesh Iyer chipped in with two wickets each whereas Yuzi Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja maintained the pressure with one wicket apiece. Chahal also became the leading wicket-taker for the Men in Blue after dismissing Shanaka.

Eventually, SL were restricted for 137 for 6 in their full quota of overs (courtesy of Charith Asalanka's gritty 53*) as they were never in the run-chase and struggled to stitch partnerships.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash Sri Lanka in 1st T20I as India attain longest unbeaten streak in shortest format

Rohit Sharma-led team India will be looking to continue their winning run when they take on Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the upcoming three-match series in Lucknow on Thursday. India are scheduled to play three T20Is followed by two Tests against the visitors at home. India will be heading into the series on a confident note after clean sweeping West Indies 3-0 in their last T20 assignment.

However, India will be without a number of key players, who were part of the T20I series win against West Indies. While Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested, the likes of KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar will miss the three-match series against Sri Lanka due to respective injuries.

While a number of stars are set to miss the series, India will have both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah back in the squad for the three T20Is. While Jadeja is making a comeback after recovering from an injury, Bumrah had been rested from the T20Is against West Indies and is all set to return.

With no Kohli, Rahul and Suryakumar in the squad, India is likely to hand more opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who can open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma or Ishan Kishan. Shreyas Iyer can take Kohli's number 3 spot while Deepak Hooda or Sanju Samson can be asked to replace Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order.

With Jadeja making his comeback, he is likely to bat at no.6 and will have Venkatesh Iyer in the lower-middle order to help him in finishing games. Hooda might not feature in the first game if the team management decides to give both Gaikwad and Samson an extended run to prove their worth.

With no Chahar in the squad, Harshal Patel is likely to feature in all three matches and will comprise the pace attack along with the experienced Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar has been impressive in his last few matches and will be hoping to continue his fine form with the ball against Sri Lanka.

Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to play as the lone spinner in the XI in the first T20I and might get rotated with Kuldeep Yadav in the upcoming matches.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to open, Ravindra Jadeja returns: India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against Sri Lanka

BCCI have announced an 18-man squad for Team India's forthcoming three-match T20I series versus Sri Lanka at home. The Chetan Sharma-led All India senior selection committee named the squad in a virtual press conference.

The likes of Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant have been rested for the white-ball assignment versus the Islanders. Following the second and penultimate T20I versus West Indies, on Friday evening (February 18), reports came in that the duo were given a bio-bubble break and have left for their respective homes before the series finale versus the Men in Maroon. Thus, they will now also miss the SL T20Is.

On the other hand, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja have returned to the T20I setup. Bumrah was rested for the WI limited-overs series whereas Jadeja was out of action due to injury. He had also missed the entire South Africa tour, due to a knee injury which he sustained during the New Zealand home series in late 2021. Bumrah will also be Rohit Sharma's deputy in the white-ball series as regular white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul is out with a hamstring injury (during the WI ODIs).

The SL series will get underway on February 24 with the series opener to be played in Lucknow. The remainder of the T20Is will be held in Dharamshala before the two Tests follow suit. The red-ball series will be played from March 4-March 16.

BCCI announces India squad for SL T20Is: Kohli, Pant rested; Bumrah named Rohit's deputy, Jadeja returns

Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to take over as the new captain of the Indian Test team ahead of the start of the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. The selectors are expected to announce the squads for the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka soon. The Islanders will play three T20Is followed by three Tests against the hosts starting from February 24.

Virat Kohli had stepped down as India's Test captain in January this year after the team's 2-1 loss against South Africa away from home. The Test captain's position has been vacant ever since and the BCCI is yet to take the final call on the next leader of the Indian team in the longest format.

While a number of names have been thrown into the mix for Test captaincy after Kohli's departure, as per a report in Cricbuzz, Rohit will be made India's skipper across all three formats, in all likelihood. The Hitman had taken over as the ODI and T20I captain of the national team last year.

Virat Kohli set to miss T20I series against Sri Lanka

Kohli is likely to be rested for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka amid his ongoing lean patch with the willow in international cricket. The former India skipper has not scored an international century since November 2019 and has struggled for consistency in the last couple of series for the Indian team.

As per Cricbuzz, Kohli might get a break from the Sri Lanka T20Is but will return to take part in the three-match Test series. The first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali could be his 100th Test appearance for India. However, if Kohli decides to miss the first game to take an extended break, he will play his 100th Test in Bengaluru.

Rohit Sharma set to take over as India's Test captain, Virat Kohli to miss T20Is against Sri Lanka - Report

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a successful two-day event, held in Bengaluru. While many marquee and uncapped players fetched whopping deals, some big names also went unsold. The likes of Suresh Raina, Adil Rashid, Imran Tahir, Shakib Al Hasan were part of the unsold list.

Talking about Raina, known as Mr. IPL, made heads turn by not getting any deal from a new franchise whereas he wasn't even re-signed by the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) setup. Having been a stalwart for the four-time champions, with most runs for the franchise and fourth-highest runs in IPL overall (5,528 runs), Raina didn't have a great run in CSK's title win in IPL 2021. He returned with only 160 runs at an average of 17.77. Thus, it played a part in his omission.

MS Dhoni's CSK pay heartfelt tribute to Suresh Raina as star player goes unsold at IPL 2022 mega auction

MS Dhoni is set to continue leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). There were rumours floating on social media recently about Dhoni possibly handing over the captaincy reins to Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022. However, that doesn't seem to be the case and the former India captain will continue to lead CSK this year.

Jadeja was retained as the first-choice player for a staggering Rs 16 crore (160 million) by CSK ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction next month, while Dhoni was retained as the second-choice player at Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million). It was earlier reported that Dhoni himself had suggested the franchise retain Jadeja as the first-choice player to ensure the star all-rounder gets the valuation he deserved.

A CSK source has stated that the decision to retain Jadeja as the first-choice player doesn't mean Dhoni will not captain the team in IPL 2022 and that the call to hand over the reins to his successor will be taken by Dhoni himself.

"There have been no discussions regarding the matter. We will cross the bridge when the time comes. Dhoni is our captain. He is the first player of CSK and when he decides to step down, he will make that call. We are now focused on the auction," a CSK source was quoted as saying by InsideSport.

Dhoni has been leading CSK since the inception of IPL in 2008 and played for now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants when CSK were banned from the league for two seasons in 2016 and 2017. He led the Men in Yellow to a memorable triumph in their comeback season in 2018 before inspiring them to another final in 2019.

CSK finished seventh and failed to make it to the playoffs in IPL 2022 but Dhoni & Co. bounced back in stellar fashion last year to clinch their fourth IPL title after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final. CSK have retained Dhoni, Jadeja, Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

The four-time champions will be looking to build a string squad around their fabulous core group of players at the mega auction.

MS Dhoni to continue leading CSK in IPL 2022 amid rumours of Ravindra Jadeja taking over as captain

Team India returned from a disastrous tour of South Africa, losing the three Tests 2-1 and being whitewashed in the preceding three ODIs. In limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence, KL Rahul led the side in the 50-over series where the national side produced a listless performance.

India's bowlers failed to get regular breakthroughs throughout the course of the series whereas the middle and lower-order batting remains a cause of concern. After the three ODIs, it is widely believed that India need an urgent transformation in the white-ball formats. The Men in Blue need to rejig their batting line-up, play more fearlessly and include more specialists in the two shorter formats.

In this regard, veteran keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has opined that star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja can solve India's middle and lower-order struggles. Karthik suggested for Jadeja to bat at No. 6 going ahead.

At present, Jadeja is out of contention for a spot across formats due to knee injury. On Wednesday (January 26), the BCCI selectors named a strong ODI and T20I squad for Rohit-led India's West Indies series, at home. Jadeja missed out as he is still not fully fit from his knee injury. The star player remains an indispensable part of the Indian team across formats.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is less than a month away. During the recently-held IPL General Council Meeting, the BCCI finalised the auction date, i.e. February 12 and 13, as the showpiece event took place in Bengaluru. All eyes will be on the non-retained players, which comprises several marquee players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan and the likes. Six of them will be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- who have the luxury to choose three players each before the auction proceedings.

The IPL auction has always hogged the limelight, since 2008, as franchises shed a huge chunk of money on players from various countries or of different age bracket. Talking about the IPL 2022 edition, the BCCI will once again be under the scanner for hosting the 15th edition smoothly, with the Covid-19 pandemic still not over. As of now, no final decision has been taken regarding the venues for the upcoming season. The Sourav Ganguly-led board will finalise the venues and share the full schedule after monitoring the Covid-19 situation nationwide. If hosting the cash-rich league in India becomes out of the picture, BCCI will look to take the IPL in Sri Lanka, South Africa or the UAE (as per reports).

From MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Ben Stokes to Chris Morris: Most expensive players in IPL auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and enjoy a staggering fan base across the globe. Captain MS Dhoni has been one of the key figures in their massive success in the IPL over the years. He has led the team to a stunning nine finals and four trophies in twelve seasons.

Dhoni's name has been synonymous with CSK's success since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. However, the CSK skipper is now in the twilight of his cricketing career and might not continue playing for too long having already retired from international cricket in 2020.

Though the 40-year-old has been retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2022, Dhoni is not expected to continue playing for the next three years of his contract. CSK will need a new captain at the helm once Dhoni decides to hang up his boots from all forms of cricket and the search for the new leader seems to have begun already.

Speculations are rife on social media that star all-rounder can take over from Dhoni as the new captain of CSK as early as IPL 2022. Dhoni reportedly has himself decided to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja in the upcoming season to ensure a smooth transition for the team.

While the reports of Dhoni handing over captaincy to Jadeja in IPL 2022 is mere speculation at the moment, the all-rounder had previously expressed his desire to captain CSK once the current skipper decides to retire. In 2021, Jadeja had responded to a question from a CSK fan page asking who should be captaining CSK after Dhoni.

The all-rounder had replied with his jersey number '8' before deleting the tweet.

CSK have retained Dhoni, Jadeja, Rutuaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali ahead of the mega player auction in Februray and will be looking to build a strong squad around the core group. Jadeja was retained as the first-choice player by the four-time champions for a whopping Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million) while Dhoni was the second-choice retention at Rs 12 crore (120 million).

Earlier, former CSK batter Robin Uthappa, who was part of the team's title-winning campaign in IPL 2021, had also hinted at Jadeja being looked at as the new captain of CSK after Dhoni.

"I am sure that is MS Dhoni’s doing itself. He knows the value that Jadeja has to the unit. I think from what I understand, Jadeja might be someone who could end up leading the squad in the future as well when MS Dhoni retires. They have given him the due he deserved,” Uthappa had said when asked about Dhoni opting not to be retained as the first-choice player by CSK.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed to hold their nerve as they helped England pulls off a thrilling draw in the fourth Ashes 2021-22 Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Sunday. Australia were just one wicket away from their fourth successive win in the five-match series, however, they were denied victory by the last standing paid of Anderson and Broad.

Anderson, who faced the final over of the day from Steve Smith, was seen surrounded by fielders on the final day of the Test match as Australia gave their all in a bid to win the game. Not just the last two batters but Australia had a similar fielding setup for England's no.9 Jack Leach towards the end of the day's play.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) recalled a similar setup by former skipper Gautam Gambhir for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni in an IPL game. KKR shared a picture from the game where Dhoni can be seen surrounded by several KKR fielders as he bats in the middle.

Drawing a comparison with Australia's fielding setup against England on the final day of the 4th Test on Sunday, KKR shared a picture of Gambhir's move against Dhoni calling it a 'masterstroke'. The IPL franchise ended up getting brutally trolled by CSK and India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja reacted to KKR's post on Twitter and called it a 'show off' not a 'master stroke'. His response immediately went viral on the micro-blogging site with CSK fans also ripping KKR apart for their dig at former India captain Dhoni.

Danish Kaneria, the former Pakistan spinner, recently revealed his T20 XI of the year. With the calendar year coming to an end, there was plenty of cricketing action across formats. In the shortest format, the T20 World Cup was held in the UAE in the last quarter whereas several bilateral series also took place, across the globe, as a build-up for the marquee event.

Hence, many top stars performed as per expectations whereas some new faces impressed the most. On the other hand, some big names failed to live upto expectations. In this regard, Kaneria's list features some top names from the game but didn't have both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma; two of the most consistent performers in the format and among the top-three run-getters in T20Is overall.

Kaneria told on his Youtube channel, "Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam are my openers as performed really well throughout 2021. They were outstanding in the T20 World Cup (2021) and they played well in the recently concluded series against West Indies as well," Kaneria said.

"People will say at one down it should be Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul or Virat Kohli but no I have a different opinion, I will go with Jos Buttler. He (Buttler) played really well and he had also scored a hundred in World Cup. So, he deserves the spot," Kaneria explained.

The rest of his line-up comprised England's big-hitter Liam Livingstone (who had a decent T20 WC), Mitchell Marsh (Player-of-the-Match in T20 WC finale), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin (who has 9 scalps from 5 T20Is since his comeback in limited-overs setup) and Adam Zampa whereas his pacers included Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Rishabh Pant was named as the 12th man.

For the unversed, Kohli amassed 299 in 8 innings at 74.75 along with 4 fifties in the shortest format in 2021. Rohit, on the other hand, ended with 424 runs at a strike-rate of 150.88 with 5 half-centuries.

Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja begin rehab at NCA; Hitman expected to lead India in South Africa ODIs

India Test skipper Virat Kohli said Rohit Sharma's absence in the Test series against South Africa is a big problem for the Men in Blues as his partnership was an important factor.

Rohit was ruled out of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa after a hamstring injury during the practice session.

"Will miss his abilities a lot. He's proven in England already that he's really worked his Test game out, and the opening partnership was very important for us to play in that series. Obviously, with his experience and skill, we will miss those qualities," said Virat Kohli in a virtual conference.

"That said, it's an opportunity for Mayank [Agarwal] and KL [Rahul] to step up and solidify that start for us and make sure the good work is carried on in this series," he added.

Will miss Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja's abilities in Test series vs South Africa, says Virat Kohli

Ravindra Jadeja is out of the India-South Africa Test series after the 33-year-old got ruled out due to forearm injury, which he suffered during India's home series versus New Zealand recently. Earlier, Jadeja had also missed fourth and final Test versus Australia, in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the entire home series versus England.

Thus, some reports started doing the rounds in the last few days which stated that the star Indian all-rounder is set to retire from Tests to prolong his limited-overs career. On Wednesday (December 15), Jadeja has responded to all the retirement rumours in style.

Ravindra Jadeja shuns Test retirement rumours in style courtesy a fitting post on Twitter

Virat Kohli-led Team India have plenty of quality bowlers who have stood tall and delivered the goods for the national side, especially in the Test format. India have maintained their dominant run in Tests for quite sometime and maximum credit needs to be given to their current crop of bowlers.

At present, India have senior pacers in the form of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah along with spin duo R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. However, the likes of Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Jayant Yadav have also made a mark in their given chances. Hence, all eyes are on them ahead of India's upcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa in the African nation, from December 26.

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh opined on India's bowling combination for the SA series and lavished praise on Siraj. Stating that Shami and Bumrah will be automatic picks along with Ashwin and Jadeja, Bhajji has his eyes on Siraj and stated that he will be India's No. 1 bowler in near future.

"Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj... what an outstanding bowler. In the time to come, he will be India's No. 1 bowler. With him, I feel Shardul Thakur will return because in South Africa you will require a seamer who can bat as well. Along with them, we shall certainly see R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja playing and perhaps, Axar Patel could also be seen operating with them," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

For the unversed, Siraj has had a dream start to his Test career. He ended as India's leading wicket-taker in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia (with 13 scalps) and also returned with 14 wickets in the four Tests versus England in the United Kingdom. He featured in the second and final Test versus New Zealand recently, where he ended with 3 for 19 in NZ's first essay.

So far, Siraj has accounted for 33 wickets in 10 Tests, at an average of 27.69, and is expected to continue his inspiring run in South Africa.

Not Jasprit Bumrah or R Ashwin! Harbhajan Singh names who could be India's No. 1 bowler in future

The mutual respect and admiration between India and New Zealand players were at the display post India's comprehensive 372-run victory in the second and final Test of the two-match series between the two sides at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. R Ashwin wins hearts with 'picture of the day' featuring Axar, Patel, Ravindra & Jadeja after India beat NZ

Virat Kohli-led Team India have locked horns with New Zealand in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. While Kohli has returned back to action after the T20 World Cup, the home side are without the likes of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja and speedster Ishant Sharma for the series finale.

After a delayed start due to wet outfield, Captain Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. He opined on Rahane, Ishant and Jadeja's absence and told the broadcasters, "We're batting first. Rahane had a hammie niggle on Day 5, Jadeja has a swollen right forearm, and Ishant has an injury too. We just have to do the basics right like in Kanpur. No Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant Sharma: Here's why Team India are without famed trio in 2nd Test vs NZ

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained captain MS Dhoni, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. While many expected Dhoni to be CSK's first-choice retention, the franchise announced that Jadeja has been kept as the first-choice player for Rs 6 crore (INR 160 million) while Dhoni will be taking a salary of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million).

Dhoni was CSK's highest-paid player from IPL 2018 to 2021 as he was on a contract of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) per year. However, Dhoni has taken a pay cut this time around to continue his association with CSK in what are the final few years of his cricketing career. Having already crossed the age of 40, Dhoni is not expected to continue playing for the next full three seasons for CSK.

Robin Uthappa, who was part of CSK's IPL-winning team in 2021, has hinted at who can be Dhoni's successor at CSK once he decides to hang up his boots. While explaining why CSK have made Jadeja their highest-apid player and not Dhoni this time around, Uthappa said it must have been Dhoni's choice and that they have given the Team India all-rounder the due he deserved.

Uthappa also suggested that Jadeja is one of the favourites to take over the captaincy from Dhoni after his retirement from IPL. “I am sure that is MS Dhoni’s doing itself. He knows the value that Jadeja has to the unit. I think from what I understand, Jadeja might be someone who could end up leading the squad in the future as well when MS Dhoni retires. They have given him the due he deserved," Uthappa said on Star Sports.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained captain MS Dhoni, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction.

Team India have locked horns with New Zealand in the second and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (December 3). After the drawn Kanpur Test, both sides have all to play for with the series on the line. While regular captain Virat Kohli returned to the playing XI, after being rested for the series opener, the home side have gone into the final Test without the likes of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma.

The famed trio have not been dropped but got ruled out due to injury concerns. At the toss, the 33-year-old Kohli opined on Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Jadeja's absence and told, "We're batting first. Looks like a hard wicket and not a lot of grass. With the sun out, it should be the best time to bat. Rahane had a hammie niggle on Day 5, Jadeja has a swollen right forearm, and Ishant has an injury too. We just have to do the basics right like in Kanpur. NZ must be given credit for batting out the overs on Day 5. We can be in positions to capitalize at home if we play well."

Not Suresh Raina! CSK CEO names ex-player MS Dhoni & Co. will try to 'get back' in IPL 2022 mega auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained captain MS Dhoni and three others ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. There were a lot of speculations surrounding Dhoni's future after he led CSK to their fourth IPL title this year, however, CSK have put the rumours to bed by retaining their charismatic leader.

39-year-old Dhoni is no more the player he once was when it comes to his batting and his struggles have been evident in the last couple of seasons of the IPL. However, Dhoni remains one of the best captains in the league and marshalled his troops to perfection last season.

India and New Zealand's first Test, in Kanpur, ended in a riveting draw. Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led India posted 345 all-out in the first innings whereas Kiwis made 296 in return. With a 49-run lead, Rahane & Co. declared their second essay at 234-7, setting up a stiff 284-run target.

Kane Williamson's Black Caps were 79 for 1 on the final day but surrendered the momentum from thereon as they were reduced to 155/9 towards the fag end of the Test match. Nonetheless, debutant Rachin Ravindra's 18* (off 91 balls) and Ajaz Patel ensured the match ended in a draw as Kiwis managed to remain at 165/9 at stumps on the final day.

While India had plenty of top-performers in the first Test, such as Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Axar Patel, etc. R Ashwin also played his part with some valuable runs in both innings and returning with a six-wicket haul. However, he made heads turn by becoming the third highest wicket-taker for India in whites, surpassing Harbhajan Singh's tally during the final day's play.

With 419 scalps, Ashwin will look to go past Kapil Dev's tally (434) and grab the second position. After the Kanpur Test, former NZ captain and spin-bowling all-rounder Daniel Vettori has stated that he has often remained surprised and fascinated by the fact that India have preferred Jadeja over Ashwin on many recent occasions, especially while playing overseas. In this regard, he said on ESPNCricinfo, "I think for someone who has been so dominant in so many different scenarios for India. He is so reliable particularly in home conditions. The pace at which he takes wickets is phenomenal. The way he has evolved… his variations… the bowler that he was to the bowler that he has become. He is always learning, always trying to get better."

"All this while he is one of the best spinners for India and in world cricket, he regularly gets dropped. It is fascinating to sit back and see a guy who averages over five wickets in a Test and is a consistent match winner gets left out of the team, and how Jadeja gets preferred over him. But he keeps coming back. He is far from done," added Vettori.

For the unversed, Ashwin wasn't part of India's playing XI in the four Tests versus England in the United Kingdom early this year. Apart from that, he has often been benched with Jadeja getting the preference -- mainly for his batting -- when India tour SENA countries. He, however, remains a confirmed selection whenever India play at home.

Ashwin will now look to guide India to a win in the second and final Test versus New Zealand, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The final Test will commence from December 3, which will also see the return of regular captain Virat Kohli in the Indian squad.

Ross Taylor (2) also failed to score big, and New Zealand was quickly reduced to 125/4. Brief Scores: India 345 and 234/7d; New Zealand 296 and 165/9 (Tom Latham 52, Will Somerville 36, Ravindra Jadeja 4-40).

Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt praised Indian all-rounder Axar Patel and called him "extremely talented" but he also weighed in on the comparison between Patel and senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja stating that the latter is a "complete player".

The 27-year-old Axar was part of three-match T20I series between India and New Zealand that Rohit Sharma & Co. won 3-0. Overall he picked four wickets in the series and emerged as a vital cog in the third and final match when he took two crucial wickets.

On his YouTube channel, Butt said, "Axar Patel is extremely talented, but Ravindra Jadeja is a complete player. Be it batting, bowling or fielding, he is an outstanding team man. So definitely when one player goes, his replacement comes."

Fine half-centuries by Shreyas Iyer (75 not out off 136 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (50 not out off 100 balls) helped India reach 258/4 in 84 overs at stumps on Day One of first Test against New Zealand at the Green Park Stadium here on Thursday.

On a truncated day when six overs were lost to bad light, Iyer and Jadeja joined forces for an unbeaten 113-run stand after Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee had reduced India to 145/4 in 49.2 overs in the second session after Shubman Gill had given the hosts a good start while scoring his third half-century.

Carrying on the good work from the second session, Iyer began the evening session by driving an overpitched Rachin Ravindra delivery through cover. He would go on to take three more boundaries off Ravindra, including back-to-back fours in the 64th over.

The Mumbai batsman then slowed down and dealt in singles, one of which led to reaching his maiden half-century in 94 balls, becoming the 63rd Indian batter to reach the landmark on debut. Iyer and Jadeja were largely untroubled though an odd ball from William Somerville did trouble the latter. While Jadeja got a thick outer edge from Southee for a boundary, Iyer continued to cut Patel twice through off-side followed by lofting sweetly over long-on.

New Zealand took the second new ball as soon as it was due but that didn't change the situation as Jadeja hit successive boundaries off Jamieson, bringing the century of the fifth-wicket partnership with Iyer. In the next over, Jadeja brought up his 17th half-century in the longer format with a quick single to mid-off.

Since 2013, Team India have entered the knockouts in every ICC event. They won the Champions Trophy in 2013, ended as runners-up in 2014 T20 World Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy and inaugural World Test Championship. Further, they lost the semi-finals in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup as well as in the 2016 T20 WC.

Being the dominant force at home, winning bilateral series across formats while being on the road and having played the IPL 14 final leg in UAE, Virat Kohli's Team India entered the 2021 T20 WC as one of the strongest contenders. In addition, they entered the showpiece event as the second-best side in terms of ICC T20I rankings (still hold the same position) but failed to make it to the last four.

While such one-off blips are always inevitable, how did India manage to falter when they had all the boxes ticked? Or, did they really have all bases covered before entering the multi-nation tournament?

Before we analyse how India managed to fall like nine pins, let's go through the pros attached to the Men in Blue camp. For starters, India had a solid top three -- Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Captain Virat Kohli. In addition, they had power-hitters in abundance in the form of Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja. Moreover, all their power-hitters were able finishers as well. In the bowling department, India comprised ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, seasoned campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar and were bolstered by the return of R Ashwin in the spin department. 'Mystery bowler' Varun Chakravarthy and Mumbai Indians' (MI) wicket-taker Rahul Chahar also had enough experience in UAE conditions (courtesy their recent IPL stints).

The one-time winners were surely extra motivated to give a proper send-off to the outgoing coaching staff, led by Ravi Shastri, and Captain Kohli (who had already announced that the T20 WC will be his last assignment as India's skipper in the shortest format). Above all, the national side also comprised MS Dhoni -- the most successful international captain with all three major ICC titles in his cabinet -- as mentor.

HOW DID INDIA STILL MANAGE TO FALTER?

CONTINUOUS CRICKET, TIRED LEGS, BIO-BUBBLE ISSUES

For the unversed, Team India players have been super busy in the post Covid-19 era. Competitive cricket returned with IPL 2020 in the UAE. The gruelling 60 matches kept the Indian players on their toes as they returned to the 22-yard cricket strip after a long gap. In addition, they were acclimatising with the bio-bubble demands. The mega event was followed by an full-fledged Australia tour (from November 27, 2020 to January 19, 2021).

The Australia trip was followed by England's all-format tour of India in early 2021, from February 5 to March 28. Soon, IPL 14's first leg followed suit, from April 09.

The Covid-19's second wave led to this year's IPL season's postponement on May 4. Hence, it did serve as some respite for the Indian players, giving them more time before the United Kingdom tour. The original IPL 2021 schedule was supposed to end on May 30. On the other hand, India were scheduled to play the WTC final on June 18 at Southampton. Hence, their break would've been minimal given how teams have to report early for mandatory quarantines and entering a bio-bubble environment.

Let's get back to how things actually shaped up! Indian players got a break with IPL 14's postponement but had to enter the bio-bubble in Mumbai, on May 19, for UK tour. They left for the UK on June 2 and departed for the UAE, in mid-September, after the fifth and final England Test got cancelled on September 10.

Note: Indian players were given a 20-day bio-bubble break post the WTC final, before reassembling for the England Tests.

Coming to the UAE, Indian players reported to their respective IPL franchises, as the tournament lasted till October 15. Soon, India played their Super 12 opener in the T20 WC, on October 24, before they bowed out with their last league stage match on November 8.

India's cricketing schedule in post-pandemic era

India tour of Australia: Nov 27, 2020- Jan 19, 2021

England tour of India: Feb 5- March 28

IPL 14 first leg: April 9-May 4

India vs New Zealand, WTC final: June 18-23

India vs England Tests in the UK: August 4-September 10

IPL 14 final leg: Sep 19-Oct 15

T20 WC: Oct 24-Nov 8

Barring the WTC final, India dominated and enjoyed considerable success in the post Covid-era. Somewhere down the line, the law of averages was always going to catch up with them.

NOT MANAGING 'PROBLEMS OF PLENTY', QUESTIONABLE SELECTIONS, APPALLING STRATEGIES

Apart from the continuous cricket, it is important to note that India's main squad assembled for the first time in T20Is for the World Cup. They had last played together in the format during the England home series, which ended on March 28. Thus, there was a staggering gap of 201 days (counting till the IPL finale on October 15). One can argue that the Indian players were still in the T20 groove by playing in the IPL. However, that they were performing different roles donning varied jerseys in the cash-rich league.

While the bio-bubble strain and fatigue factor had already kicked in, which was clearly evident the Pakistan and New Zealand face-offs, some eye-catching selections and poor strategies added to an exhausted side's woes. For instance, overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal -- who has been India's spin spearhead -- despite his form in IPL 14's final leg, not even including him in the standby list, putting Deepak Chahar (who has second-best figures overall in T20Is: 6 for 7) among standby players, suddenly adding R Ashwin (overlooked in limited-overs since 2017), preferring Varun Chakravarthy in the opening two games cost Kohli & Co. severely.

Note: Prior to the World Cup, the KKR spinner Chakravarthy had represented India in only three T20Is.

Having problems of plenty is surely a headache teams would like to afford While India have been blessed with plenty of T20I stars, are they managing them wisely? In order to unleash Ishan Kishan versus New Zealand, after the Pakistan mauling, India demoted Rohit Sharma at No. 3. Their best batsman was dropped down in the batting order at the expense of a young batter. Appalling! (Remember how India had auditioned several players for the No. 4 spot for the 2019 ODI World Cup before claiming that they will remain flexible with the batting slot in their campaign?)

TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH

Lastly, the whole of Indian cricket fraternity was in jubilant mood following MS Dhoni's appointment as team mentor for the mega event. After all, Dhoni had led India to their last ICC title in 2013 and enjoys huge respect among the current crop of players. As feared and already pointed out by Sunil Gavaskar, it seems it did lead to having several strong minds within the Team India dressing room, causing more ruckus in a 'problems of plenty' squad.

Undoubtedly, there is no question being raised about 'rift' issues. However, the tired minds and exhausted squad also couldn't gain much from Dhoni's presence.

How India under-performed in T20 WC? A quick look at the recipe that left a bad taste in our mouth

India deserve more respect despite their faltering campaign at the Twenty20 World Cup, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said after the team's comprehensive victory against Scotland on Friday.

The 2007 champions risk early exit after being thrashed by Pakistan and New Zealand, the top two teams in Group II, in their first two matches.

They snapped their losing streak against Afghanistan earlier this week. However, to have any chance of reaching the last four, India have to rely on the Afghans beating New Zealand on Sunday and then Virat Kohli's men must defeat Namibia a day later.

"We as a team have played consistently well in the last three years across formats, at home and away," Jadeja, whose 3-15 against Scotland earned him the man-of-the-match award, said after their eight-wicket victory.

"We may have been off-colour in a couple of matches, but it's wrong to judge us by that."

Toss has played a vital role in the tournament with chasing teams holding a clear edge and India captain Kohli was unlucky with the toss of coin in the first three matches.

"Batting the first innings has been a challenge with the ball gripping the surface and stopping a bit," Jadeja said.

"With the dew setting in, the pitch gets flat and batting becomes lot easier. We've seen the same team looking quite different depending on when they batted.

"Teams batting first have struggled to get good starts, which is so important in T20 cricket."

Jadeja conceded winning the final group match may not be enough but said dwelling on what went wrong was pointless.

"There is no panic in the dressing room. We are not thinking of our loss in the first two matches. We got an opportunity and we are trying to make it count."
