India and South Africa's five-match T20I series ended in a stalemate, 2-2, after the fifth and final encounter was abandoned due to persistent rain in Bengaluru. Despite the series not determining a winner between both sides, there were a lot of positives for the hosts India, who were without many of their white-ball regulars.

The Rishabh Pant-led Indian team saw top performances from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned with the Player-of-the-Match, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal. After the series, former SA captain Graeme Smith named two players who are now integral to India's T20I squad and named the X-factor for Rohit Sharma & Co. heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Speaking to cricket.com, batting icon Smith opined that Pandya and Karthik have become somewhat indispensable. In this regard, he opined, "Still a lot of cricket to be played so it is difficult to predict what is going to happen in the next couple of months but you are going to think Hardik and DK are integral to that squad. DK is experienced with that finishing role that he has played Hardik has grown leaps and bounds and is in control of his game."

On Hardik, Smith added, "Mentally he looks like he has settled. And he is also that all-rounder X Factor that India require to just balance the team with him and Jadeja in the squad which opens up a lot of options. So I can't see that those two not making it to the World Cup squad."

Both Hardik and DK will next be seen in action during India's forthcoming two-match T20I series versus Ireland, in Dublin, on June 26 and 28.

Graeme Smith names star player as Rohit Sharma-led India's 'X-factor' for 2022 T20 World Cup

The IPL 2022 edition ended on May 29 (Sunday). There were plenty of memorable performances by uncapped players, veteran stars whereas some big names failed to get going and fell flat. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell and many other superstar cricketers failed to live upto expectations and had an ordinary run.

Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked Team India's T20 World Cup squad, for the mega event set to be held in Australia later this year, on the basis of Indian players' IPL 2022 performance. While Chopra named Hardik Pandya -- IPL 15's winning captain -- as India's skipper, he dropped Virat, Rohit, Rishabh Pant and Jadeja.

"The first name I am keeping is KL Rahul. He can play till 15-17 overs, he is a T20 gun batter and scored more than 600 runs this year. I have kept Ishan Kishan along with him. If you see his numbers, you will say it was not that bad a season for Ishan Kishan."

"At No. 3, I have kept Rahul Tripathi. He played very well this, strike rate has been very high and given match-winning performances. At No. 4, I have kept SKY. He has not played all the games but he has played at a different level in the matches he played," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

Hardik to lead India in Aakash Chopra's T20 WC squad based on IPL 2022, Virat, Rohit & some big names dropped

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded with a fitting final between two of the most deserving sides of the season. Gujarat Titans (GT) got the better of Rajasthan Royals (RR) to cap off an incredible debut season by lifting their maiden IPL trophy. It was a fairytale run for the Titans, who had saved their best for the last and came up with a clinical performance in the final to clinch the elusive trophy for the first time.

Hardik Pandya received the prestigious trophy after a magnificent tournament for the Titans. The star all-rounder was leading a team for the first time in his IPL career and showcased exceptional leadership qualities to prove why he can be one of the strong contenders for Team India's captaincy going forward.

It was a memorable season for Hardik and his men, who proved the naysayers wrong with some terrific cricket throughout the tournament. Debunking the myth that the trophy is won at the auction table, Gujarat Titans, who not many had given a chance after the mega auction earlier this year, got the best out of their players and had to wait for lesser than many for their first title.

While Hardik had a phenomenal debut campaign as captain of the Gujarat Titans, not all new captains managed to impress with their leadership in IPL 2022. There were a total of four new captains, who were leading a side for the first time in their IPL careers this year and all four had contrasting journeys.

While Hardik was roped in as their captain by the Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore replaced the mighty Virat Kohli with a cool and calm head in Faf du Plessis. Mayank Agarwal took over the reins at Punjab Kings after KL Rahul's departure and it was Ravindra Jadeja, who was in charge of the Chennai Super Kings after MS Dhoni pulled off yet another surprise to step down from captaincy ahead of the season only to make a comeback later.

Here is a look at how the four new captains fared in IPL 2022:

Hardik Pandya

The most impressive of the lot was unarguable Hardik Pandya, who proved many wrong with display some brilliant leadership qualities throughout the season. After being released by Mumbai Indians, Hardik was appointed as captain by debutants Gujarat Titans, with many questioning the decision to hand over the reins to the star all-rounder, who had dealt with injury issues over the past couple of years and had not contributed much with the ball either.

Hardik led from the front as the season began and promoted himself up the order to take more responsibility with the bat. While he didn't bowl regularly, he always stepped up when his team needed him with the ball and picked up wickets at crucial junctures. Besides being an inspiring leader, he always let his game do the talking on the pitch.

Hardik finished as the highest run-getter for the Titans with 487 runs in 15 matches and also picked up 8 wickets. He delivered a match-winning all-round performance in the final against the Rajasthan Royals to power his side to their maiden title with 3 wickets and 34 runs. Hardik became only the third captain in IPL history to bag the Man of the Match award in an IPL final.

Ravindra Jadeja

Expectations were not too high from Ravindra Jadeja after he surprisingly took over from MS Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2022. While there were indications that CSK might groom a successor for Dhoni under him this season, not many had expected the legendary wicket-keeper batter to give up captaincy and not lead the team at all this season.

As it turned out, Dhoni managed to spring a surprise once again for his fans by handing over the charge to Jadeja. CSK got off to a torrid start and were expected to bounce back but they ended up losing their first four games in a row before bagging their first win against RCB in their fifth game of the season.

Jadeja looked far from a leader on the field and was finding it difficult to marshal his troops initially. His bowling changes were being found out and the absence of key players due to injuries was not helping his cause. The pressure got the better of the formidable all-rounder taking a toll on his personal game.

He was failing to deliver with the bat and wickets too had dried up. If that was not enough, Jadeja also made costly errors on the field. Before it could have gotten worse, Jadeja decided to step down and hand back the reins to Dhoni after six losses and just two wins in their first eight matches. Safe to say, it was far from a perfect captaincy stint for Jadeja and was a short-lived one which ended with just a couple of wins in 8 games.

Mayank Agarwal

Punjab Kings found themselves without a leader of the pack yet again ahead of the start of IPL 2022 after KL Rahul decided to part ways with the franchise. Punjab Kings had invested in Rahul back in 2018 with an aim to groom their future leader in him but his exit left the franchise seeking a captain once again in the mega auction.

While they bought some experienced campaigners in Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada and Jonny Bairstow, Punjab Kings showed their faith in Mayank Agarwal for the leadership role. Mayank had been part of the franchise for a while now and had also got significant experience at the international and domestic levels.

However, he couldn't impress much in his debut stint as captain and had an average run with the franchise. Punjab Kings remained inconsistent throughout the tournament and failed to win two matches on the trot even once. They came close but failed to qualify for the playoffs with 14 points from 14 games.

Their approach with the bat was lauded by many as they played some aggressive cricket and showed the right intent but their bowlers failed to compliment the batters at times in what was yet another season of ups and downs for the Anil Kumble-coached side.

Faf du Plessis

There was immense excitement surrounding Faf du Plessis' appointment as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the start of the season. Du Plessis had replaced Virat Kohli, a bonafide superstar who had led the team to back-to-back playoffs in the last two seasons but failed to get them over the line.

With Du Plessis' arrival, it seemed RCB might go on to crack the IPL-winning code in the 2022 season and it did see to unfold as the season began. RCB were a much better unit under the former CSK man, who had been part of several IPL-winning squads with the Yellow Army.

Du Plessis had the pedigree of a leader who could inspire RCB to their maiden IPL title and he did take them to the playoffs for the third season in a row. However, the team faltered again on the big stage and was knocked out of the playoffs.

However, there were a lot of positives from RCB's campaign as they saw the rise of some of the youngsters like Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror while the likes of Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga dazzled with the ball. A lot of the current players in RCB will only get better in the years to come and they might go on to achieve something special if they continue working hard.

From Hardik Pandya to Ravindra Jadeja: How new captains fared in IPL 2022?

Virat, Rohit's barren run to MI-CSK's mighty fall: 5 surprising elements from IPL 2022's league stage

IPL 2022 becomes the first-ever season where both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have not qualified for the playoffs. In IPL 2016, both teams were also not part of the playoffs, however, CSK didn't feature back due to their two-year suspension in the spot-fixing scandal. Thus, it surely is the end of a magnificent era.

The MS Dhoni-starrer defending champions CSK ended at the ninth position in the points table. On the other hand, five-time winners and IPL's most successful team Mumbai couldn't avoid the wooden spoon despite a winning end to their forgettable campaign. Both sides returned with four victories and as many as ten defeats each. In fact, this was also the first time both franchises endured nine, or more, defeats in a season. In a nutshell, it can be said that two toppers fell flat and occupied the last two positions in the overall standings as other teams have surely mastered the art of winning big moments against them. However, the bigger question remains -- is MI-CSK's drubbing really a shocker? Well, it was always on the cards.

Many connoisseurs of the game might be quick to point out that the 'law of averages' was always going to bite the two famed sides. However, more than that CSK-MI's muddled approach, questionable team selections, playing styles, strategies, etc. were some notable reasons for their massive downfall.

1) Poor approach to the mega auction: Prior to the season, MI-CSK's team management's approach remained below par. After letting go of some big names in their roster, MI only managed to re-buy Ishan Kishan. Their replacements for the Pandya brothers, Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult, etc. were never really impressive (after including Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith, etc.). The Men in Blue also didn't purchase a solid spinner to spearhead the middle-overs. Murugan Ashwin did impress, however, he was also taken to the cleaners during some high-scorers. CSK, on the other hand, re-bought their core players, who seem to be well past their prime. It was an auction to look ahead, however, CSK's conservative approach sealed their fate then and there.

One might argue that CSK did pick young guns such as Mukesh Choudhary, Maheesh Theeshana, Simranjit Singh, etc., nonetheless, they never cared to properly rebuild their bowling unit. Either they had international bowlers woefully out of form, or only good to chip in with few overs, or it turned out to be too much reliance on youngsters in Deepak Chahar's absence.

2) Captaincy and team management woes: CSK isn't a team that makes headlines for captaincy woes and reports of a rift between a player, or players, and team management. This season saw them tick off both the boxes. Firstly, if Dhoni was sure to give up captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja much before the season started, Jadeja still looked like a fish out of the water. His approach was half-baked whereas, in some crunch games, he seemed out of the picture with Dhoni leading the charge. Lastly, when Jadeja relinquished captaincy and Dhoni returned to the post officially, reports of a rift between CSK team management and Jadeja took precedence. Even if the reports have been quashed completely, something was surely not right in the way things were handled in the Yellow Army camp.

3) Dubious selections and strategies: Both MI and CSK have been successful as they follow a similar template, i.e. backing their group of players and accomodating a change in strategy when needed. However, IPL 2022 saw both teams make some surprising calls in terms of team selection and erring in strategies. While CSK admitted to have not read the pitch properly on a few occasions (read Dhoni's post-match comments after their second loss to Gujarat Titans), they didn't back Devon Conway after his failure on debut. MI, on the other hand, dropped Tim David -- who was roped in for INR 82.5 million -- after a few flop shows. Similarly, MI didn't go all-out in the usage of Jasprit Bumrah with him not opening the bowling in several matches. Meanwhile, CSK's rotation of bowlers and top order's timid approach never saw them coming to their usual best. During Jadeja's captaincy, the rotation of bowlers was also not up to the mark.

These factors led to both CSK and MI failing to emerge on top in several close encounters (versus Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, etc.). There was utter chaos, a lack of role clarity and imbalance among batters and bowlers, especially at the initial stages, to confirm both sides' early exit.

4) Lack of form, injury to key players ruining it all: To add salt to their wounds, Chennai and Mumbai's star players never really stood tall. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. never threatened opposition camps with their consistency or form. Bumrah wasn't among wickets at regular intervals, barring a game where he ended with a five-fer, whereas Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, and Robin Uthappa did their best but it wasn't enough.

MI and CSK's big buys also underperformed. While Ishan, the most expensive player of this year's mega auction, ended with 400-plus runs, he struck at 121.11. On the other hand, CSK missed the services of Chahar, who remains injured and out of action. Injuries to Jadeja-Suryakumar Yadav in the fag end of the league stage also hurt the wounded CSK and MI line-up.

Hence, both CSK and MI are deservingly out of the playoffs race. As the two are highly successful in IPL, expect them to bounce back sooner than later. However, both MI and CSK need to go back to the drawing board to rethink their approach, and playing style, revamp next year and be more ruthless as the tournament is now much more difficult to crack with the addition of two new teams.

ALSO READ | 'I've only seen Zaheer, Nehra do that during my time' - Virender Sehwag lavishes praise on Punjab pacer 2) Captaincy and team management woes: CSK isn't a team that makes headlines for captaincy woes and reports of a rift between a player, or players, and team management. IPL 2022: How MS Dhoni's CSK and Rohit Sharma-led MI's debacle was always on the cards

The social media platform Twitter saw MS Dhoni trending on Friday afternoon (May 20). As the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is playing their last game of the IPL 2022 edition, locking horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 68 of the 15th season, all eyes are on Dhoni as he is featuring on the 22-yard cricket strip for the last time this year.

While all were eager to hear about Dhoni's IPL future, the 40-year-old answered the big question during the coin toss. Being asked about the big query by Ian Bishop, Dhoni was quick to respond and said, "Definitely, because it will be unfair not to say thank you to Chennai. Won't be nice to do that to CSK fans." As soon as Dhoni's reply was heard by one and all in the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, the crowd was buzzing with a loud cheer and applause.

CSK legend MS Dhoni confirms participation in IPL 2023, says 'will be unfair to not say thank you to Chennai'

Team India will return to action very soon after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 edition. The Rohit Sharma-led national team is set to lock horns with South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home, starting from June 09. With India also set to resume Test rivalry with England in the fifth and final match of the 2021 series, the marquee players are reportedly set to miss the SA T20Is.

Thus, Indian selectors are most likely going to announce a second-stringed side for the South Africa series, followed by a white-ball assignment versus hosts Ireland. Amid all this, the South African team recently announced a strong squad for the India T20Is, comprising regulars such as Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Lungi Ngidi, skipper Temba Bavuma, Anrich Nortje, etc. Despite many of them currently being a part of the IPL 2022 edition, the Proteas line-up boosts a strong squad. Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has urged the national selectors to not rest India's regulars for the upcoming bilateral T20Is.

"If you were thinking that an experimental squad can be put out for this series and take June lightly before the tour of England, just think again. South Africa have tied India's hands now and will win the series if an ordinary team is put out. India have to play pretty much everyone," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

India have a hectic schedule once again en route the 2022 T20 World Cup. They host South Africa at home, before playing Ireland in two T20Is in their own den, an all-format tour of England which will be followed by a white-ball tour of West Indies and a home T20I series versus Australia in September.

'Don't rest your main players' - Former Indian opener makes special request to national selectors for SA T20Is

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have locked horns with their arch-rivals and bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 59 of IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (May 12), at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In a must-win clash for the defending champions and four-time winners, nothing has clicked for them including the coin toss.

After being asked to bat first, CSK paid the price for both teams not having the DRS available to them due to power cut at the iconic stadium. As a result, Devon Conway, in the in-form opener, was wrongly adjudged lbw and Chennai never recovered from thereon. They were 29-5 and managed to reach close to the three-figure mark due to MS Dhoni's 33-ball 36*. Chennai eventually folded for a paltry 97 in 17 overs (rocked by Daniels Sams' 3 for 16 and two scalps each from Riley Meredith-Kumar Kartikeya) to succumb to a new low in what has been a forgettable season for them.

CSK vs MI: 97 all-out! MS Dhoni & Co. succumb to a new low, register their 2nd lowest IPL total

Ravindra Jadeja has had a torrid time in IPL 2022. Just before the start of the season, he was reawarded with the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as MS Dhoni decided to step down from the post. Nonetheless, the star CSK all-rounder's captaincy stint was short-lived as he himself resigned from the position after eight games, leading the defending champions to a win in only two fixtures.

Apart from his captaincy, Jadeja's run with both bat and ball remained below-par before he requested Dhoni to take back the leadership role. Playing freely as a player, the 33-year-old soon got injured (rib injury) during CSK's clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and was been ruled out of IPL 15. Ever since he relinquished captaincy, many believe all wasn't well between the CSK team management and Jadeja (although CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has denied all such reports). Now, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes this might have been the last season for Jadeja in yellow jersey.

"Jaddu (Jadeja) won't be there for this match. But I am getting a thought that maybe he won't even be there next year. Ravindra Jadeja might not be with CSK in IPL 2023, says ex-Indian opener amid rift rumours

The El Clasico of IPL returns as the five-time champions and bottom-lying Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to lock horns with the arch-rivals MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 58 of IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (May 12), at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Exactly three years back, Rohit Sharma's MI franchise had beaten Dhoni-starrer Chennai by a run in IPL 2019 final to win their fourth title. This time around, the Mumbai outfit will be desperate to return to winning ways and also end CSK's playoff hopes with a win on Thursday evening. For the unversed, MI were the first team to be out of the playoffs race and if they manage to settle scores with CSK this time around, following their close loss to the Yellow Army earlier this season, it will also end Dhoni & Co.'s hopes of progressing ahead. Hence, a lot is riding on this battle despite both sides languishing at the bottom.

Talking about both teams' form, MI won two in a row after eight successive defeats. However, they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 52 runs in their previous encounter. On the other hand, CSK have had some change of fortunes ever since Dhoni returned as their captain. Since then, they have won twice and lost one clash. In their last outing, Chennai defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by a whopping 92-run margin and will hope for another big win to bolster their NRR and keep playoff hopes alive.

Match prediction for CSK vs MI encounter: The toss at the Wankhede has always been crucial. While captains have largely preferred chasing, only thrice out of 15 games has a winning captain opted to bat first at this venue. Out of those three instances, totals have been defended twice, hence, batting first is also not a bad option here. Nonetheless, the toss will remain critical. Will MI rely on birthday boy and CSK's nemesis Kieron Pollard to upset CSK's chances? A close and moderate-scoring contest on the cards!!!

CSK vs MI, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians clash?

In what comes as a huge blow for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. CSK on Wednesday (May 11) announced Jadeja will miss CSK's remaining three games in the season due to an injury.

The former CSK captain had injured himself while fielding during his side's clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and missed their last game against Delhi Capitals (DC) due to a rib injury. CSK will now miss the all-rounder's services at a crucial juncture in the tournament as they are still alive in the race for the playoffs this season.

Though Jadeja had not enjoyed the best of form for CSK this season, his absence is likely to hurt CSK a lot as he was a key member of the squad who could contribute well with both bat and the ball. Jadeja had started the season as CSK's captain but decided to step down from his post midway through the tournament.

Ravindra Jadeja to miss the remainder of IPL 2022 due to injury, confirm CSK

Prior to the start of IPL 2022, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced a change in leadership as MS Dhoni made way for Ravindra Jadeja. Many had their eyes glued on Jadeja as the star CSK all-rounder had big shoes to fill in and deliver the goods for the four-time winners and the defending champions in the 15th season.

Nonetheless, Jadeja's captaincy stint for the Yellow Army was a forgettable affair, where he managed to lead the side to only two wins from eight encounters. With his own performances also not being upto the mark, with both bat and ball, the 33-year-old stepped down from the post and requested his predecessor Dhoni to once again take up the top job before Chennai's ninth game of the season (versus Sunrisers Hyderabad).

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo's T20 Time Out, India's former head coach Ravi Shastri opened up on Jadeja's CSK captaincy stint. While Shastri agreed that the change in captaincy led to CSK's downfall this season, he defended Jadeja and refrained from blaming him for CSK's woeful run. He said, "He [Jadeja] is not a natural captain. He hasn't captained at any level. So, to give him the responsibility I thought was a little hard on Jadeja. People might want to judge Jaddu, but it's not his fault. He hasn't captained anywhere. He looked a fish out of water, totally out of place and he's far better off playing as a player. Because he's one of the best around in the business, when it comes to allrounders."

"So let him just focus on his cricket. That [decision to give him the captaincy] cost CSK a few games early on. If you see the form they're in now, if they had this going early on, they'll be right up there in the mix, Shastri further added.

Jadeja's numbers in IPL 2022 have also been below-par. He has only accounted for five scalps and struck at a woeful 118.36. If his season has ended due to injury, it surely has been a forgettable one for the star cricketer.

'He looked a fish out of water' - Ravi Shastri defends Ravindra Jadeja's CSK captaincy stint

In what can be a huge blow for MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The former CSK skipper had missed the side's last game against Delhi Capitals (DC) owing to an injury and is now reportedly set to miss the remaining matches.

Jadeja had injured his arm while fielding during the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore following which he had to sit out against Delhi Capitals. However, his absence was not felt much as CSK went on to thrash DC by 91 runs after posting a huge total of 208 runs on the board to keep their playoffs hopes alive.

Shivam Dube had come in as Jadeja's replacement in the game and played a good cameo of 32 off 19 balls laced with two sixes and two fours. As per a report in the Times of India, Jadeja can miss the remainder of the season as the CSK camp assessed his injury and it has not gotten better in the last couple of days.

It can be a huge blow to CSK as they still have an outside chance of making it to the top four. Despite not having played to the best of their potential this season, CSK have managed 8 points in 11 matches so far and can finish the season with a maximum of 14 points which might be enough for them to qualify depending on the results of other teams.

Huge blow for CSK as Ravindra Jadeja likely to be ruled out of remainder of IPL 2022 - Report

Ravindra Jadeja has been far from his best in the IPL 2022 edition. The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, who led the Yellow Army for the first in the 15th season and in only eight games, has struggled for runs as well as wickets (despite some tidy spells in the last two appearances).

So far, Jadeja has only 116 runs at 118.36 and has managed to claim only five wickets in ten encounters. Thus, many have blamed Jadeja's below-par all-round performances and leadership for the four-time winners and defending champions' struggles in this year's season. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has defended the star CSK all-rounder.

"I won't blame Jadeja for CSK'S troubles because this is not his team. When I haven't made the team, why would I take all the blame? Jaddu the captain was always going to be a question mark as he doesn't have experience of captaincy at any level. On top of it, you made a 'reunion' team," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

'You made a reunion team' - Former Indian opener defends Ravindra Jadeja amid CSK's IPL 2022 struggles

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have neared elimination in IPL 2022 with their seventh defeat of the season, after losing match 49 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 13 runs. With another loss, the four-time winners and defending champions are on the verge of an early exit as their disappointing season continues.

While some of their batters haven't been at their best, the bowling has leaked runs on many occasions, the change in captaincy has been one of the main reasons for their failures. Prior to IPL 15's start, the franchise had announced that MS Dhoni would be stepping down as the skipper, with Ravindra Jadeja succeeding him. Jadeja led in eight games, winning only two encounters, before handing back the captaincy duties to 'Thala' Dhoni.

With the constant change in leadership and Jadeja's inability to respond to the additional responsibilities, the CSK franchise are now starring on the brink of an early exit. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, thus, commented on Yellow Army's struggles.

"The first mistake they did was at the start of the season when they announced that MS Dhoni won't be captaining and it will be Ravindra Jadeja, it was a wrong decision," Sehwag told Cricbuzz after CSK were beaten by RCB on Wednesday (May 04).

CSK were wrong to replace MS Dhoni with Ravindra Jadeja as captain: Sehwag opines on Yellow Army's struggles

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 49 of the IPL 2022 edition, on Wednesday evening (May 04). The match was held at the MCA Stadium, Pune where RCB emerged on top by 13 runs with the playoffs race intensifying with each passing day.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Chennai Super Kings versus Royal Challengers Bangalore clash

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not had a smooth ride in IPL 2022. The four-time winners and defending champions find themselves languishing at the ninth spot in the points table, with three wins from nine encounters. While they remain alive in the playoffs race, by the barest of margins, the Yellow Army have lots to do to enter the top four.

Among many other reasons, it is believed that MS Dhoni's decision to hand over captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, prior to the season-opener, also led to CSK's poor form. Under Jadeja, Chennai looked clueless and won only two games from eight matches. After that, he requested Dhoni to take back captaincy as CSK beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs in their previous encounter.

While Dhoni is the CSK captain for the remainder of the season, the future doesn't look bright for the Yellow Army. They are nearing elimination in IPL 2022 and struggling to find someone who is capable enough to succeed Dhoni. In this regard, former Aussie spinner Brad Hogg feels that CSK have no one to take over as captain after Dhoni. "Who is going to take over from MS Dhoni at the end of this year? I can't see a player on CSK's team list that can captain this team effectively and efficiently. They will have to go to the auction next year to find a player of captaining ability, and try to find an Indian to do the job is going to be hard because all the best Indian T20 players have already been assigned to other franchises," Hogg said on his YouTube channel.

He added, "They will have to go to an international player. It will be difficult to find a player that will fit in to the balance and the game plan that CSK already have in place."

Hogg also opened up on Jadeja's decision to quit CSK captaincy in the middle of the season. With captaincy responsibilities, the star all-rounder was struggling to contribute with the bat and had managed only five scalps in the first eight fixtures. "He is one of the best all-rounders in the world, and he is the centerpiece of CSK's lineup, so you have to take the pressure away from him. ALSO READ | EXCLUSIVE | Want to pick Kohli's aggression, Dhoni's finishing skills and Rohit's stroke-making: Lalit Yadav He added, "They will have to go to an international player. It will be difficult to find a player that will fit in to the balance and the game plan that CSK already have in place." Hogg also opened up on Jadeja's decision to quit CSK captaincy in the middle of the season. With captaincy responsibilities, the star all-rounder was struggling to contribute with the bat and had managed only five scalps in the first eight fixtures. "He is one of the best all-rounders in the world, and he is the centerpiece of CSK's lineup, so you have to take the pressure away from him. We have learned that Jadeja is not right for the role, but he is a leader in his own right. Sometimes you lead in different ways, so MS Dhoni had to take over the role," said the Aussie.

MS Dhoni returned as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja decided to step down as the skipper of the side and hand over the reins back to Dhoni. Dhoni led CSK to a much-needed 13 run-win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on his comeback as the skipper to keep the four-time champions alive in the race for the playoffs this season.

Dhoni had himself passed over the baton to Jadeja ahead of the start of the season keeping the future in mind. However, Jadeja decided to quit captaincy as CSK endured a horrible start to the season with just two wins and six defeats in their first eight matches. The pressure of captaincy had also started affecting Jadeja's game adversely.

Reacting to the captaincy saga at CSK this season, former CSK star Faf du Plessis, who is leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCb) this season, said Dhoni should be the captain at CSK as long as he is in the team. Du Plessis said he was surprised when the change in captaincy happened mid-season but insisted the move was in the making.

"I'm surprised that the captaincy change happened midseason, but I was also surprised at the way it happened the way before the season. So, it is like two surprises cancelling each other out. Obviously, there's no secret that when MS is there and he is the captain, he does get the best out of the players, and that has been a big part of CSK's success," Du Plessis said in a video shared by RCB ahead of their clash against Dhoni's CSK in IPL 2022 on Wednesday (April 04).

When MS Dhoni is there, he is the captain: Faf du Plessis on CSK captaincy saga in IPL 2022

It has been a musical chair when it comes to captaincy in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp in IPL 2022 edition. Just two days prior to IPL 15's commencement, MS Dhoni resigned as captain and Ravindra Jadeja was named his successor. After eight games, with CSK losing six of them and languishing at the penultimate position in the points table, Jadeja gave up captaincy and requested Dhoni to take over once again.

With Dhoni back at the helm, CSK returned to winning ways and claimed their third game of the season with a 13-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 46 of IPL 2022, at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Sunday evening (May 01). Being asked to bat first, CSK rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 99 and Devon Conway's 85 not out to post 202/2 on a batting surface.

In reply, SRH posted 189-6 with a blistering 33-ball 64 and skipper Kane Williamson's 47 but lost the plot in the middle overs with the ball turning and gripping a bit. One stand-out thing was that Jadeja played and bowled with a free mind, returning with 3-0-15-0, whereas Dhoni also looked at his usual best by guiding his bowlers and remaining proactive behind the stumps as captain.

When asked about the change of captaincy in the CSK camp, Dhoni explained the entire scenario and shared how the added responsibility took a toll on Jadeja. At the post-match presentation, he said, "Between me and Jadeja, he knew last season itself that he will be given a chance to captain this year. He knew and got enough time to prepare, what is important is you want him to lead the side and I wanted that transition to happen. In the first 2 games, there was information going in towards 'Jaddu' and after that I left it to him to decide which angle to bowl and all that," Dhoni opined.

'You don't want him to feel that captaincy was...': MS Dhoni on Ravindra Jadeja quitting as CSK skipper

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not had much going their way in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. With six losses in their first eight matches this season, CSK stand on the brink of facing early elimination as they desperately aim to spark a turnaround. The defending champions were expected to be a force to reckon with after a memorable title triumph last season but they have failed to replicate their success this year.

CSK are no stranger to slower starts to their campaign but this season was different as they slumped to four straight defeats in their first four games before breaking the deadlock against Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their first points on the table. CSK were expected to get some winning momentum behind their back after their win over RCB but they lost two in their next three matches as the slump continued.

CSK were in for a stern test at the start of the season after stalwart MS Dhoni's decision to hand over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. While many thought the decision could prove to be the right one considering Dhoni is past his best as a batter and Jadeja can learn from him while he is still around, the move didn't quite work in CSK's favour.

The defending champions went on to endure one of the worst possible starts to the season as Jadeja looked overwhelmingly burdened on the field with the captaincy responsibility. His personal performances with both the bat and the ball also weren't up to the mark nor were some of his decisions under pressure.

However, Jadeja's dodgy form has not been the only reason behind CSK's struggles this season as the four-time champions have lacked good starts at the top of the order and have also backed cutting edge in their pace department. The lack of a power-hitter in the middle-order has also seen them fail to get over the line in close run-chases.

Decoding CSK's struggles in IPL 2022:

1) Misfiring openers

Chennai Super Kings' buggest concern this season has been the woeful form of opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad, who was the leading run-getter in IPL 2021 last year, played an instrumental role in helping CSK win their fourth title along with his opening partner Faf du Plessis, who was the second-highest run-getter of the season.

While Du Plessis is no more a part of the CSK squad, Gaikwad has not been able to hit the ground running in IPL 2022. With just one fifty in eight matches so far, the young right-hander has struggled immensely with the willow. To add to CSK's woes, his opening partner Robin Uthappa has also struggled to provide good starts at the top consistently while Devon Conway was dropped after just one failure.

2) Deepak Chahar's absence

Chennai Super Kings have also missed the presence of their premier pacer Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out due to an injury ahead of the start of the season. Chahar has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers for CSK over the last few years and has been exceptional in Powerplay. His absence has been a huge blow for the four-time champions, who have failed to find an ideal replacement for the 29-year-old.

Chahar was expected to return to the squad midway through the season but was ruled out from IPL 2022 completely after his injury worsened. In his absence, CSK have no prominent Indian pacer in their squad and have had to pay the price for an inexperienced bowling attack.

3) Injury woes

Besides Deepak Chahar, CSK have also had to deal with injuries to several key players. New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, who was epected to play a big role for the franchise with his brutal pace, has been ruled out of the season. All-rounder Moeen Ali has also suffered an anke injury and has already missed three matches for the team.

4) Change in captaincy

Not man had expected CSK to struggle as much as they did after MS Dhoni stepped aside to hand over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja as captain of the side. However, the change in captaincy didn't work in CSK's favour. Despite having significant experience behind his back, Jadeja was not as sharp on the field with his decision making.

The pressure of captaincy also saw Jadeja lose his sheen as the all-rounder he has been for CSK over the las couple of seasons. While he was struggling to get going with the bat, the left-hander also has not been among the wickets for the Men in Yellow. CSK also clearly missed Dhoni's tactical genius and his exceptional decision-making abilities on the field in crucial situations.

Can MS Dhoni pull off another miraculous comeback for CSK?

On Saturday, CSK announced Dhoni was returning as captain for the team after Jadeja had decided to hand over the reins back to the legendary wicket-keeper batter. While the expectations have sky-rocketed once again, he will have his task cut out for the remainder of the season.

With six defeats in eight matches, CSK are already on the brink of facing early elimination from the tournament and need to win their remaining six matches on the trot to stand a chance of making it to the playoffs. While Dhoni remains one of the greatest captains of all time in IPL history and has bailed his team out of trouble on several occasions, it will be a mountainous task to get CSK's derailed campaign back on track.

The Dhoni era will reignite for CSK with their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Sunday (May 01) which will be a must-win encounter for the four-time champions as they look to spark a turnaround and bring a change in the fortunes this season.

CSK vs PBKS: Shikhar Dhawan completes a special double ton, joins MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli in elite list

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to continue their winning run when they lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Monday (April 25). CSK defeated Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller in their last outing to bag their second win in seven matches so far this season as their playoff hopes hang in balance after a woeful start.

CSK had lost four matches in a row before getting off the mark with a win against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their fifth game of the season. They slipped up against in-form Gujarat Titans in their next game despite being in a strong position before returning to winning ways against Mumbai Indians.

Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad's form has remained the biggest worry for CSK this season as the youngster has failed to fire barring one half-century against Gujarat Titans. Their death bowling woes have also been left exposed on several occasions already this year with Adam Milne out of the season due to an injury and Chris Jordan dropped due to poor show with the ball.

Punjab Kings had a great start to their campaign with two wins in their first three games before losing the plot. The Mayank Agarwal-led side has since lost three out of their next four matches to be placed 8th on the points table. Barring Liam Livingstone, none of the PBKS batters have been consistent this season and their pace attack has also lacked venom despite Kagiso Rabada's presence.

Rayudu added that CSK is going through a transition phase, with the captaincy baton passed on from Dhoni to Jadeja, he strongly feels that the Yellow Army will still succeed under the new leader along with a plethora of young talents. "There is a shift and it has to come. A lot of youngsters will continue to feature in CSK as the years go by. Having a young captain like Jadeja, who has done it and seen it all, will be great for them to be under him and have his confidence. They have the backing of the captain, and I think he is going in the right direction, as is the team. CSK will be very, very successful under him," Rayudu further asserted.

The cricketing action will continue in IPL 2022 edition on Monday evening (April 25). The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be taking on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the second reverse fixture of the season, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Both sides are in desperate need to find some momentum and consistency as their playoffs hopes are hanging by a thread. Talking about the Punjab franchise, they are slowly getting into a familiar territory -- like in the past few seasons -- of getting into a do-or-die situation. So far, they have only three wins from seven encounters and are languishing at the eighth position, just a spot above Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK.

On the other hand, the defending champions Chennai has picked up some momentum but they still need a log of catching up to do in order to progress to the playoffs. The four-time winners have only two victories from seven games and also need to work on their NRR. While CSK bowlers are now beginning to complement the ever-reliant Dwayne Bravo, they would need a lot more to stop a rampant Punjab batting line-up, who usually go all-out in the powerplay overs (going at over 9 RPO).

Meanwhile, the likes of Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad also need to find some form for Chennai's benefit. From Punjab's perspective, they need a lot more from their opening duo Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan whereas Jonny Bairstow desperately needs to find form or make way for Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Liam Livingstone -- Man-of-the-Match in PBKS' big win over CSK earlier in the season -- will continue to spearhead the middle and lower-order, however, he needs more support from the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, etc. Their bowling has been led by Rahul Chahar and an economical Arshdeep Singh but Kagiso Rabada still hasn't come good.

Match prediction for Chennai vs Punjab: The Wankhede pitches are now back to producing some big scores. However, the dew effect has gone down considerably and, hence, batting first won't be ruled out altogether. The surface used for the Lucknow-Mumbai encounter was a two-paced one. It will be interesting to see if it remains the same for Monday's clash. With Punjab coming into this encounter on the back of a loss, a slightly-improved Chennai should march ahead of an inconsistent PBKS line-up to pick up their third win of the season. CSK also have a better head-to-head record, leading Punjab 15-11.

PBKS vs CSK, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings match?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets in match 33 of IPL 2022 edition on Thursday evening (April 21). In a thrilling contest, held at Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai, the Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK franchise opted to bowl first and were asked to chase down a moderate 156. Mukesh Choudhary's 3 for 19 helped CSK restrict MI to 155-7.

In reply, Chennai lost Ruturaj Gaikwad on the first ball of the run-chase. The onus finally fell on Dwaine Pretorius-MS Dhoni as the duo rescued the ship with the South African all-rounder's 14-ball 22 and former captain Dhoni's 13-ball 28 not out.

Eventually, CSK needed 16 off the final four deliveries before Dhoni upped the ante, versus MI's Jaydev Unadkat, as the Yellow Army pulled off a heist on the final delivery of the contest. After the match, Pretorius explained how Dhoni's presence helped him and revealed the wicketkeeper-batter's advice to him during his handy knock.

"Unbelievable. He's the master at finishing off games and he did it again tonight. I wanted to go for that scoop shot in the first over against (Jasprit) Bumrah (his third), but he (Dhoni) said, 'Wait, wait, wait'. I waited and the next over I said, 'Now I'm going.' And he said to go for it. I went for it. We knew we needed five boundaries, no dots and we could get over the line. I'm working hard and just glad I could contribute to a win to the team today and hopefully we can win a few more," said Pretorius.

Pretorius had played a memorable scoop shot -- in the penultimate over bowled by Bumrah -- during his 14-ball 22 which helped CSK narrow down the equation before Dhoni's late blitz.
