R Ashwin created history when he surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) to become India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests (436). The 35-year-old wily off-spinner achieved the feat during Rohit Sharma-led India's massive win over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali.

Earlier, Ashwin had surpassed Harbhajan Singh's wicket-tally (417) when India hosted New Zealand in two Tests in late 2021. Thus, he is now India's most successful off-spinner in whites and remains only behind leg spinner Anil Kumble (619) in terms of most wickets among Indians in the red-ball format (ninth-most wickets overall). In the past, comparisons have often taken place between Ashwin and Harbhajan, two of India's most successful off-spinners. Thus, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir picked the most difficult spinner to face among Ashwin and Bhajji.

“As a batter, I would hate to face Ravichandran Ashwin, but I would love to watch Harbhajan Singh. This means, that as a left-hander, I would always feel that Ashwin could dismiss me, but as an analyst, then Harabhajan...he had that bounce, that doosra and could dip the ball. And Ashwin, for a left-hander or any other batter, he is much more difficult to face because he is far more accurate and difficult because of his speed variations. Harbhajan Singh was more beautiful to watch,” he said.

R Ashwin or Harbhajan Singh? Gautam Gambhir picks the more difficult off-spinner to face

Shane Warne's death has left a huge void in the cricketing fraternity. Warne passed away due to a suspected heart attack on Friday evening (March 04) in Thailand. The former Aussie spinner was a big name in world cricket even after his international retirement.

Warne ended his glittering international career with as many as 1,001 wickets -- 708 in Tests and 293 in ODIs -- apart from having a Test hat-trick and being a World Cup-medallist (in 1999 when he was the Player-of-the-Match in the summit clash). Thus, the 52-year-old spinner revived legspin and also showcased tremendous character and grit on and off the field to overcome various obstacles.

Sharing an unheard story of Warne, Team India's wily off-spinner R Ashwin recently revealed how the Aussie great had developed strong shoulders after breaking his legs. Warnie had narrated the whole incident to Rahul Dravid, who shared it with Ashwin.

Sharing the story on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “I was talking to Rahul Dravid who was extremely sad. For a spinner, your shoulder and upper half of the body has to be extremely strong because you have to use many rotations to spin the ball. Because for a spinner to master your craft, you should keep bowling in the nets. More so, if you are a leg-spinner. He had strong shoulders and that was his massive advantage.

"It seems Rahul Bhai asked him, 'How do you have such strong shoulders? What do you do?' It is such a unique story. There is a sport called 'Aussies Rules Football'. It is a sport like Rugby. It seems he wanted to play the sport but was not built for it since people who play it are tall and well-built blokes," he revealed.

"For 3-4 weeks he walked or rather floated using his bare hands and those made his shoulders strong and there was no looking back. That's what he has told Rahul Bhai. We all face obstacles in life, but look how Warne converted it as his success formula," Ashwin further added.

R Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev: A look at India's highest wicket-takers in Tests

From top earners to players with big pay cuts: BCCI's new central contracts list for 2021-22

India thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the series opener of the two Tests in Mohali on Sunday (March 06). After dismissing the Lankans for a paltry 174 in the visitors' first essay, following India's 574-8 decl., India bundled out the Islanders for 178 in their following innings to win big and go 1-0 up in the series.

There were quite a few positives for Team India throughout the course of the first Test. While Ravindra Jadeja further grew in stature as an all-rounder, returning with a blistering 175 not out and nine-wicket haul in the match, R Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket tally (434) to become India's second-highest wicket-taker (436), after Anil Kumble (619).

After the match, Rohit was asked to comment on how Ashwin still struggles to feature in India's playing XI on a regular basis when playing away from home (in overseas conditions). To this, Hitman said the following in the post-match presser:

“Really, can’t tell you anything about his overseas place - why doesn’t he find it or why is he in the eleven. I honestly, have no idea because I wasn’t a part of the selection at that point so I can’t tell you what happened and why was he left out and why didn’t he play and those kinds of stuff,” Rohit explained.

'Honestly, have no idea': Rohit Sharma on why R Ashwin hasn't featured regularly in overseas Tests

Rohit Sharma-led Team India demolished Sri Lanka in the first Test to thrash the Islanders by an innings and 222 runs and go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series. Opting to bat first, India rode on Ravindra Jadeja's 175* and fifties from Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant and R Ashwin to post 574-8 decl. In reply, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 174 in their first essay and managed only 178 after being asked to follow-on on Day 3 (Sunday).

Thus, Rohit began his Test captaincy era with a massive win whereas India also presented a perfect gift to former captain Virat Kohli, who featured in his 100th match in the red-ball format. The list is spearheaded by Sachin Tendulkar and comprises Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev, Ishant Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh.

R Ashwin is an all-time great: Rohit hails spinner after he becomes India's 2nd highest wicket-taker in Tests

Ravichandran Ashwin has become India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket after surpassing the legendary Kapil Dev. Ashwin achieved the remarkable feat after dismissing Charith Asalanka during Sri Lanka's second innings on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between the two sides at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali on Sunday.

One of India's most prolific wicket-taker in Test cricket over the years, Ashwin has been producing consistent performances with the red ball and has played an instrumental role in India's success in the longest format. He had headed into the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka, needing five wickets to go past Kapil Dev.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) made their first signing at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction in the form of Indian spinner R Ashwin on Saturday (February 12). Ashwin was roped in by the franchise for a sum of Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) making the move one of the talking points of day 1 of the mega auction.

Ashwin, who has played for Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals so far in his IPL career, will be donning the RR jersey in the upcoming season. Soon after Ashwin was bought by RR, social media flooded with reactions as the off-spinner will now share the dressing room with England batter Jos Buttler in the IPL.

Ashwin had mankaded Buttler in IPL 2019 and it was believed the duo didn't share a great rapport between them after the infamous incident. However, both Ashwin and Buttler have welcomed the prospect of playing together from the upcoming IPL season.

In a video reacting to his move to Rajasthan Royals, Ashwin had said he was looking forward to sharing the dressing room with Buttler. The England batter has now responded to Ashwin's message in a hilarious video shared by Rajasthan Royals.

"Hey Ash, Jos here. Don't worry, I am inside the crease. Can't wait to see you in pink for the Royals. Look forward to sharing a dressing room with you. Halla Bol," Buttler said in the video.

From Shreyas Iyer to Kagiso Rabada: Complete list of 10 marquee players sold at IPL 2022 mega auction

The IPL 2022 mega auction has started with a bang. The first slot featured the marquee players, such as David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, etc. Rajasthan Royals -- the winners of the inaugural season -- came into the mega auction with INR 620 million and have roped in the likes of R Ashwin (INR 50 million) and Trent Boult (INR 80 million) whereas David Warner has rejoined his first-ever IPL franchise, i.e. Delhi Capitals (DC), for INR 62.5 million.

Warner, who represented the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) from 2014-2021, wasn't retained by the Orange Army ahead of the mega auction proceedings in Bengaluru. His fallout with the SRH team management was a big talking point in the previous season and, hence, Delhi made the most of it to re-buy the Aussie left-hander. Warner is the fifth-highest run-getter in IPL history, with 5,449 runs at 41.59 along with a strike-rate of 139.96. He had earlier represented the Delhi camp -- when they were known as the Delhi Daredevils (DD) -- from 2009 to 2013.

Ashwin, on the other hand, has found a new base. Starting from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to captaining the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and moving to the DC camp, Ashwin will now represent the RR camp. IPL 2022 mega auction: David Warner goes back to DC, Trent Boult and R Ashwin shift base to RR

Senior India off-spinner R Ashwin believes MS Dhoni's finishing skills are not talked about as much as his captaincy when it comes to his team Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s success in the Indian Premier League (IPL). CSK are one of the most successful teams in the history of IPL with four titles to their name and Dhoni has played an instrumental role in making the Men in Yellow a force to reckon with in the league.

Dhoni has been part of the CSK setup since the inception of the IPL in 2008 and has led the team in all twelve seasons that they have been part of the league so far. Having led CSK to four IPL titles and nine final appearances, Dhoni is one of the best captains in the league.

While his remarkable captaincy has been one of the highlights of his glorious IPL career, Dhoni's finishing skills have not been talked about as much. Apart from being a brilliant leader, Dhoni has been a great finisher and has bailed his team out of trouble on several occasions while batting across various positions in the middle-order.

Regarded as one of the best finishers the game has ever seen, Dhoni has had an immense role to play as a batter in CSK's success in the IPL. Ashwin, who was part of the CSK squad during his initial years in the IPL and has observed Dhoni lead CSK from close quarters, reckoned the legendary wicket-keeper batter's finishing abilities are underrated.

"Today, people are raving about CSK and their success. A lot is being said about Dhoni's captaincy. However, apart from his captaincy, there is a skill that has taken a back seat over the years, that is not being spoken much about. We always talk about his captaincy, his Midas touch, but his finishing ability with the bat is not spoken about much," Ashwin said in a show on his YouTube channel.

"In a situation where 60 is needed off 20 balls, he goes to the middle and smashes a couple of sixes and a couple of boundaries. He brings down the equation to l5 from the last over. We have seen this quite a few times in this past. CSK loses that game, the campaign would stutter. I have seen such scenarios," he added.

Ashwin explained how Dhoni helping secure wins from improbable situations during the league stages often helps the team's morale and boosts their confidence going forward in the competition.

"In such games, we have seen Dhoni finishing in the last over, that is an inspiration. That lifts the team morale up. Suddenly from the lower half of the table, CSK would have 10 points from 10 games. That will help transform their campaign," explained Ashwin.

Dhoni has so far played 220 matches in his IPL career and has 4746 runs at an average of over 39. He has 23 half-centuries to his name and has scored runs at a strike rate of over 135. Dhoni is CSK's second-highest run-getter of all time after veteran batter Suresh Raina.

Richard Madley remains a popular name among IPL fans. Madley took care of the IPL auction for ten years since the inaugural season, in 2008, and recently spilled the beans on how MS Dhoni led to a bidding war among the eight IPL franchises.

Back then, Dhoni had just won Team India the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup title as captain. Thus, he was making heads turn across the cricketing fraternity and was in huge demand due to his power-hitting skills. Thus, Madley recalled how the former Indian keeper-batter led to a huge bidding war in the inaugural auction during a freewheeling conversation with veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Speaking to spin wizard Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, Madley first shared how the former Aussie spinner Shane Warner was sold to Rajasthan Royals (RR) at his base price in 2008. "I remember the second player coming out of the bag that day was Shane Warne. I thought okay here's Warnie and this will be interesting, his base price was I think around 400000 US dollars. That's what he sold for at his base price to Rajasthan Royals and I thought at that time that was a smart move," Madley said.

He then shifted focus on Dhoni and added, "For the next 10 years, I watched Rajasthan Royals be the coolest bidders in the room. They never got excited, Manoj Badale was just cool and a pattern started to emerge. Then out of the bag came the man himself, the ultimate all-rounder Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and there we saw the first bidding war of many in the IPL auctions."

From Rohit Sharma to Rishabh Pant: Top 5 contenders who can succeed Virat Kohli as India's Test captain

KL Rahul-led Team India were whitewashed by South Africa in the three ODIs, in the African nation. While India were without their regular limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, they still had many star players in the line-up. However, the national side were left with many questions following their listless performance on the 22-yard cricket strip.

Ahead of India's upcoming white-ball series versus West Indies, former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels it is time for the national team to look beyond veteran player R Ashwin. Ashwin was roped in the ODI squad and played his first-ever 50-over series since late 2017. The 35-year-old, however, returned with only a solitary wicket. Thus, Bhajji feels Ashwin can be overlooked for the ODI format.

"I think these two guys (Ishant Sharma and Ashwin) have done really well for Team India, whether you talk about Test cricket or ODIs. With all due respect to R Ashwin, I think he is a champion bowler, but in ODI cricket, I feel, it's time India start looking for an option, maybe someone who can take the ball in as well as out," Harbhajan told Sports Today.

"Someone like Kuldeep Yadav could be a great option. Why don't we go back to Kulcha combination and see what they can bring to the table? They won have games for India. It will be a good thing to go back to them," he added.

Ashwin is reportedly out of action for the upcoming WI ODIs and won't play the 50-over format for nearly six months. He might keep his place in the shortest format, along with being a regular in Tests.

Kuldeep Yadav, on the other hand, has been out of favour across formats for long. He played his last ODI in mid-2021 (during India's second-stringed side's tour of Sri Lanka) and will be interesting to see if the team management recalls him for the upcoming home assignments in the white-ball formats. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep have been a daunting spin duo for the Men in Blue till the 2019 ODI World Cup, however, their dip in form and lack of batting depth resulted in the famed partnership being broken.

Harbhajan Singh advises Team India to look beyond star player in ODI format, names his replacement

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has blamed R Ashwin's return in India's limited-overs setup as one of the reasons behind the team's 3-0 whitewash against South Africa in the recently-concluded ODI series. India lost the third and final ODI against South Africa by 4 runs on Sunday (January 24) in Cape Town to lose the series 3-0.

Manjrekar, who has often been critical of Ashwin's performances away from home, has once again come down hard on the senior Indian spinner. Manjrekar believes India paid the price by picking Ashwin in their ODI squad. The off-spinner was not part of India's limited-overs squad since 2017 before making his comeback in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

Ashwin returned to India's ODI squad after a staggering five years as he was included in the squad for the ODI series against South Africa. However, he failed to make an impact and returned with just one wicket in the first two games. Ashwin finished with figures of 1/53 in the first ODI before going wicket-less while conceding 68 runs off his spell in the second game.

He was dropped from the playing XI in the third and final encounter as KL Rahul-led India aimed to avoid a clean sweep. However, India suffered back-to-back three defeats to lose the ODI series 3-0 after a disappointing 2-1 loss in the Test series.

“Ashwin strangely came back into India’s ODI plans for some reason. India paid a price for that. He played the two crucial games, did nothing much. (Yuzvendra) Chahal also under the scanner. Prasidh Krishna needs to be backed a bit more. Also, in 50-overs, Mohammed Shami can be a good option," said Manjrekar on ESPNCricinfo.

The cricketer turned commentator also stated that Bhuvneshwar Kumar's time with the Indian team is all but over as the senior pacer has been far from his best for quite a while now. He backed Deepak Chahar to be selected over Bhuvneshwar as the swing bowler in the team.

“Bowling wise, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had given signs even before this series that he is finding it difficult to get back to his best. I guess that issue is closed after seeing his performance in the series. And Deepak Chahar, the one ball to get Janneman Malan, should tell selectors that he is a better option," said Manjrekar.

The former cricketer called India's 3-0 series loss against the Proteas as one of their worst performances in the country.

“The way the match ended sums up the whole trip for India. It has to be one of the poorest Indian tours to South Africa. That’s how it was destined to be. It just wasn’t India’s time in South Africa. It is a bad loss," Manjrekar concluded.

ICC Men's Test team of 2021: Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and R Ashwin included in star-studded line-up

Virat Kohli stunned the cricketing fraternity by resigning as the Test captain on Saturday (January 15). The 33-year-old Kohli's decision came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus Dean Elgar's South Africa, in the rainbow nation.

Under Kohli, India achieved sizeable success in the red-ball format. India dominated at home, won a Test series in Australia, have an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom (held mid-2021), won two games in South Africa and played the inaugural WTC final. Kohli-led India ended as the No. 1 ranked side on five consecutive years in ICC rankings after annual updates.

Thus, with Kohli stepping aside as the Test captain, his overall captaincy tenure as also ended. The national selectors have an important decision to make, with regard to choosing Kohli's successor in whites. Limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is leading the race whereas some have suggested youngsters such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to take over.

Former Indian cricketer and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar opened up in this regard and told Gulf News, "If you ask me, it may be a practical idea to have a stop-gap arrangement with Rohit Sharma or even Ravi Ashwin for a year or so and groom someone in the meanwhile."

From his own experience, Vengsarkar revealed how the selection committee had backed Anil Kumble to succeed Rahul Dravid as Test captain, despite many suggesting the then limited-overs captain MS Dhoni's name.

“Interestingly, my committee was faced with a similar situation when Rahul Dravid stepped down from captaincy and we had a demanding Australia tour round the corner. Some felt that MS Dhoni, who was leading in the shorter format, be promoted but we went ahead with Anil Kumble who did a fantastic job,” he recalled.

Vengsarkar also opined on the reason behind Kohli's sudden resignation as Test captain. Many feel his own form -- having not scored an international ton since late 2019 -- was one of the main reasons for the right-hander's decision. “I don’t agree with this for I feel that Kohli has had a dream run for nearly five years as a batsman and captain. For all the talk about his current lean phase, I feel that Indians are often obsessed with statistics and that’s something that I don’t believe in”, concluded Vengsarkar.

Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa, at Newlands, Cape Town, was another topsy-turvy battle between both sides in the series finale. As India started the day at 57-2, with an overall lead of 70 runs, Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 100 enabled India to setup a tricky 212-run target for the Dean Elgar-led Proteas.

While SA ended the day's play at 101 for 2, with both the openers Aiden Markram and Captain Elgar back in the pavillion, there was a huge controversy which erupted when Elgar survived a very close LBW call. The Proteas captain was given out by the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, after being trapped plumb in front by R Ashwin. However, Elgar took the decision upstairs where replays showed that the ball had hit the left-hander below the knee, however, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Thus, Elgar breathed a sigh of relief by getting a reprieve at that time (he eventually fell for 30 before close of play).

Thus, this led to a huge controversy as Indian players -- such as Captain Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ashwin -- didn't mince their words and showed their frustration in the middle.

"Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition,” Kohli said as he walked up to the stump mic after Ashwin and Rahul also expressed their displeasure over the ball-tracking system.

The 33-year-old Kohli went too far ahead and even mocked the broadcaster 'SuperSport', claiming that they were doing what they could to help the home side.

Thus, former SA batter Daryll Cullinan came down heavily on Captain Kohli. He feels the Indian star batter has for too long got away with his overaggressive behaviour on-field.

“This is the typical Virat untouchable! He behaves the way he wants to behave. The rest of the cricket world just bows down to Virat. The powerhouse is India. I hate to say this but it’s been going on for years. It’s just the big suck up towards India and anybody who plays for India. They are untouchable, so everyone will laugh it off,” the former South African told ESPNCricinfo.

“I love Virat Kohli, I love his cricket, I love the way he plays. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere to say ‘hang on, you must be severely punished’. If anything, it was a mistake. I just cannot believe that they could think along those sort of lines. For too long Virat has got away with behavior which is unacceptable on a cricket field. But he’s Kohli and I don’t like it, quite frankly," he added.

Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also agreed with Cullinal and feels that the Indian team's comments were extremely serious.

“There was an insinuation from the Indian camp that the host broadcasters were up to some mischief to make sure they were putting their own team at an advantage. That is a serious kind of insinuation. I have a problem with that,” Manjrekar said.

“Virat Kohli is going through one of the most difficult phases of his career. He lost his ODI captaincy, there has been some controversy over that. This is the first time that I am seeing self-doubts have started creeping in. We saw it during the IPL as well. Never thought this guy would be under-confident,” he added.

Many former cricketers and experts of the game have slammed Team India for their approach on the entire DRS controversy. After the DRS incident, India lost the plot on the field during the fag end of Day 3 by leaking runs at will as SA ended the day's play at 101-2, chasing 212.

ALSO READ | Virat Kohli is very immature: Gautam Gambhir slams Indian skipper after stump-mic outburst in 3rd Test Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also agreed with Cullinal and feels that the Indian team's comments were extremely serious.

Kohli must be severely punished: Ex-SA batter shares his take on DRS controversy in Cape Town Test

India lost the third and final Test versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town on Friday (January 14). Day 4 commenced with South Africa in the driver's seat, at 101-2 in pursuit of 212, as Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma completed the formalities for the home side to win by 7 wickets and claim the series 2-1.

The series had plenty of moments as both sides showed a lot of character, grit and determination to emerge on top. Thus, the three-match Test series was intensely and Day 3 of the final Test was a prove of it. After Rishabh Pant's unbeaten ton propelled India to setup a 212-run target for the home side, Dean Elgar survived a very close lbw call during the fag end of the day's proceedings, off R Ashwin's bowling.

After being given out initially by the on-field umpire, Elgar referred the decision upstairs. While the replays showed that the ball had hit the batter below the knee, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Hence, he managed to survive as Indian players expressed their frustration without mincing their words.

Captain Kohli said on the stump-mic, "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time."

Meanwhile, KL Rahul was heard saying, “Whole country playing against XI guys," whereas the 35-year-old Ashwin and said, "You should find better ways to win Supersport (the host broadcaster)."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has now commented on the DRS controversy and lashed out at Team India for their rant on-field. Virat Kohli is a legend of the game, but that’s not the way to act, that is not the way to act in a game of Test match cricket."

“The ICC have to stamp this down, they have to stamp down on the Indian side, you can’t get away with talking down the stump microphone like Ravi Ashwin has done and the Indian captain has done," added the ex-England skipper.

Ravichandran Ashwin holds on to second place, Kyle Jamieson climbs to third in ICC Test Bowling Rankings

Mankading continues to divide the cricket fraternity. While the mode of dismissal is mentioned within the laws of the game, it remains controversial as many believe it is against the spirit of the game. Nonetheless, many bowlers have used the mode of dismissal to get rid of batters in the modern era.

R Ashwin remains one such bowler who has been quite vocal in support of the controversial mode of dismissal, i.e. mankading. In IPL 2019, he dismissed Jos Buttler by resorting to mankading which led to a widespread reaction in the cricketing fraternity. While many slammed him, there were a few who also supported the off-spinner. However, the wily spin-bowling all-rounder remained adamant that he will continue to back the mode of dismissal as it is in the laws of the game.

However, not many know that Ashwin had resorted to mankading in 2012. During India's tour of Australia, the then MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue were involved in the tri-series, i.e. the 2011-12 CB Series, which also had Sri Lanka as the third team. While facing Sri Lanka in match 8, India were without regular captain Dhoni (banned for one game due to slow over-rate).

During the encounter, Ashwin mankaded Sri Lanka batter Lahiru Thirimanne (batting on 44) in the 40th over. While Ashwin had warned the batter before as well, he went ahead with mankading the Sri Lankan before stand-in captain Virender Sehwag decided to overturn the appeal (influenced by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar). Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg recently named the best batsman and the bowler of the year 2021 while speaking in a video on his YouTube channel. Hogg rated Indian spinner R Ashwin as the best bowler of 2021 for his consistent performances throughout the year and his heroics across all formats of the game. 2021 was a memorable year for Ashwin as he made his comeback in the Indian T20I side after a wait of over four years.

Ashwin was named in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 and has since not looked back as he continues his impressive run. While talking about the best bowlers of the year gone by, Hogg said Ashwin was the number one. He also reserved special praise of Pakistan pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali, who both enjoyed a magnificent year with the ball and were among the wickets for their national team.

While Ashwin was the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 54 scalps to his name in nine matches, Shaheen finished with 47 wickets in as many games. Hasan picked up 41 wickets for Pakistan in eight matches and was exceptional throughout the year in the longest format.

“Spin to win, he’s the number 1. Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali, 47 and 41 wickets for them (respectively). They have been carrying Pakistan in the bowling department, so you can’t beat those 2," Hogg said in the video.

While he picked Ashwin as the best bowler of the year 2021, Hogg named England skipper Joe Root as the best batter of the year. Root had a tremendous 2021 as he finished the year as the highest run-getter in Tests with 1708 runs from 15 matches. He has been the lone warrior for England in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22.

Root failed to inspire England to victory in the Ashes 2021-22 but has managed to continue his good form with the bat. He is the top scorer for England so far in the five-match series with 277 runs from four matches. However, England have lost the Ashes 3-0 with three defeats and a draw in the four matches so far.

'He’s No. 1': Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg names Team India star as best bowler of 2021

Day 2 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, was dominated by Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The 30-year-old returned with 7 for 61 -- best bowling figures by an Indian player against the Proteas -- to dismiss SA for 229 in response to India's 202.

The day started with the home side resuming at 35-1 before they were bamboozled by Shardul's fiery spell. The all-rounder got the wickets of skipper Dean Elgar, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma, Marco Jansen, Keegan Petersen, etc. to pull India back into the contest. Whenever the Proteas had some partnerships in the middle, it was Shardul who came to the rescue for Rahul & Co.

Thus, the veteran off-spinner R Ashwin was shocked seeing the way proceedings panned out whenever Shardul came into the attack and resulted in breakthroughs. After Shardul's impressve spell, former Proteas pacer Morne Morkel told on Star Sports, "South Africa absorbed the pressure and the key was to fight through the first hour, get through Shami and Bumrah, and there on you can get the scoring options. You could see Siraj was only bowling at 50 percent. The table was set for South Africa but the game changes so quickly. You can’t lose concentration for a second as Shardul Thakur came and broke open the South African top-order." Talking about the third day's play in J'burg Test, India are 188 for 6 -- leading SA by 161 runs -- after having lost Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (58), Rishabh Pant and Ashwin in the morning session on Wednesday (January 5). Shardul and Hanuma Vihari are in the middle, at the lunch break, and will look to setup a target in excess of 220 for the home side in the second and penultimate Test.
