Senior Indian spinner R Ashwin was involved in a heated on-field exchange with umpire Nitin Menon during Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and New Zealand on Saturday. Ashwin drew the first blood for India on Day 3 as he got rid of Will Young on 89 to give India a much-needed first breakthrough in the game.

However, Ashwin's argument with umpire Menon grabbed the limelight later in the day. The on-field umpire had issues with Ashwin's follow-through while bowling as the spinner was running across the line of sight for the umpire and blocking his view.

Menon was seen having a chat with Ashwin after the spinner continued to bowl with the same follow through despite Menon expressing his objection. The spinner later made some corrections but the umpire was still not satisfied and even took up the matter with captain Ajinkya Rahane. The trio was seen having a discussion in the middle of the pitch as Ashwin looked animated.

The discussions between Ashwin, Rahane and umpire Menon went on for the next few overs before Ashwin relented and corrected his follow-through. The video of his argument with Menon went viral on social media.

Resuming their innings from 129/0 on Day 3, New Zealand lost Young in the first session before captain Kane Williamson was sent packing by Umesh Yadav for 18. Ross Taylor too couldn't stay on for long and was removed by Axar Patel, who also got rid of Henry Nicholls (2) in quick succession.

Axar also picked up the wicket of opener Tom Latham (95), who missed out on his hundred by just five runs. New Zealand are currently trailing India by 104 runs and will be hoping to close the gap as much as they can on India's total of 345 runs.

Test cricket has returned in India after the India-England series, which was held early this year. Following the IPL 2021 edition's final leg and T20 World Cup, both held in the UAE, the longest format has returned for the national side as Ajinkya Rahane-led India have locked horns with Kane Williamson's New Zealand in the series opener of the two-match Tests, in Green Park, Kanpur on Thursday (November 25).

While India are without the services of many of their regulars in the format, such as captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami, their spin department is filled with the famed trio of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Talking about Ashwin, he accounted for 32 scalps in India's last home series, versus England, and will look to continue in a similar manner versus the Kiwis.

In the list for most Test wickets among Indian players, Anil Kumble (619) leads the charts and is followed by Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan. Ashwin sits at the fourth spot currently whereas Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are tied at the fifth position (with 311 scalps each).

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir questioned David Warner for his unsportsmanlike act in the semi-final between Australia and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Thursday. Australia chased down the target of 177 runs with an over to spare to secure a spot in the final against New Zealand.

It was a reverting contest between the two teams with players from both sides under pressure. Warner's six off Mohammad Hafeez became one of the biggest talking points of the game as the ball had slipped out of the Pakistan spinner's hands before it was dispatched by the Aussie batter.

The incident happened in the eighth over of Australia's innings when the ball slipped out of Hafeez's hands and bounced twice before being hit for a six by Warner. The incident once again heated up the 'spirit of cricket' debate as many criticised Warner for going after the delivery despite knowing that the ball had slipped out of Hafeez's hands.

While Gambhir slammed Warner over his actions, he also targeted former Australian cricketers like Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting, who have been very vocal about the spirit of cricket in the past. Gambhir took to Twitter to share his views on Warner's act and also tagged Indian spinner R Ashwin asking him if the Aussie batter was right or wrong.

Ashwin had been targeted by the likes of Warne and Ashwin in the past over Mankading Jos Buttler in IPL 2019 before Warne slammed him yet again after his spat with Eoin Morgan during IPL 2021.

"What an absolutely pathetic display of spirit of the game by Warner! #Shameful What say @ashwinravi99?" - Gambhir wrote in a tweet. An Australian journalist responded to Gambhir's tweet and wrote - "Bad take Gautam".

Ashwin replied to the Aussie journo's tweet and explained Gambhir's point of view while possibly referring to his Mankading act in IPL 2019 and his spat with Morgan this year. "His point is that if this is right, that was right. If that was wrong, this is wrong too. Fair assessment?" - Ashwin wrote.

'Bad take', says Aussie journo as Gautam Gambhir slams David Warner, R Ashwin responds

Australia defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a high-pressure semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Thursday to secure a spot in the final. It was an entertaining encounter filled with drama as the two teams gave their all to set up a final date with New Zealand on Sunday. David Warner's six off Mohammad Hafeez's no-ball has become one of the major talking points from the game.

The ball slipped out of Hafeez's hands and bounced twice before Warner dispatched it for a six. Many have termed Warner's act as 'unsportsmanlike' as the Aussie batter went after the delivery despite knowing that the ball had slipped out of Hafeez's hands. The incident happened in the eighth over of Australia's run-chase.

The ball bounced twice on the pitch after slipping out of Hafeez's hands and was dispatched over deep mid-wicket for a six by Warner. It was adjudged a no-ball but the six was given as Pakistan players, including captain Babar Azam stood surprised. Warner's actions have once again started the 'spirit of cricket' debate on social media.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir called out the likes of Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting as he reacted to Warner's act. Gambhir said Warne and Ponting always have a lot to say about the spirit of cricket but what have they got to say about Warner's actions?

"Shane Warne comments and tweets on everything. Even Ricky Ponting makes big, big claims about the spirit of the game. What have they got to say about this?" - Gambhir said speaking on Star Sports post Australia's win over Pakistan in the semi-final.

"When Ashwin does Mankad, they come up with big comments. Today, what has Shane Warne got to say about David Warner? Because it's easy to criticise someone but extremely difficult to criticise your own players," he added.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli visited Scotland's dressing room after the Men In Blue registered a thumping eight-wicket victory against the Scots in a crucial T20 World Cup contest on Friday (November 5) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. After winning the toss and electing to field first, the Indian bowling department produced a mind-blowing show and bundled out Scotland for 85 in 17.4 overs. Thanks to fiery knocks by the openers Rohit Sharma (30) and KL Rahul (50), India chased down the target in 6.3 overs, which has boosted their net run rate and also their slim hopes of making it to the semis. IN PICS | Happy Birthday Virat Kohli: Top five records owned by the Indian captain The fate of Virat Kohli & Co. is beyond their control in the tournament after thrashings by Pakistan and New Zealand in their first two games, however, they bounced back in matches against Afghanistan and Scotland with factors that are in their control. Besides matches and the World Cup, the Indian team is also keeping the spirit of the game high as Kohli and some other team members like KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah were spotted visiting the Scotland dressing room. The players were seen interacting with each other. WATCH | India vs Scotland: Birthday luck! India are placed at third with four points. Importantly for Kohli's team, they now have the best net run-rate in the group should it be required in case of any qualification. After the match, Kohli said that it will be "interesting" to see what happens on November 7, when New Zealand will take on Afghanistan because the result will decide India's fate. "I don't want to say too much about today because we know how we can play. We spoke about 100-120 max, but we restricted them to a total that allowed us to leapfrog everyone else. We spoke about finishing in the 8-10 over bracket," said Kohli.

'Not in our control': R Ashwin reveals 'hardly any discussion' in Indian camp over semis permutations

Virat Kohli-led India squared off with Afghanistan in match 33 of the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE, on Wednesday (November 3). Kohli & Co. were on the back foot after twin defeats in the Super 12 round and had to win to keep their slim chances of qualifying for the semi-finals alive.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Rohit Sharma's scintillating 74 and KL Rahul's 69 to post the tournament's highest total, i.e. 210-2 in 20 overs. In reply, Afghanistan were restricted to 144-7, courtesy Mohammed Shami's 3-fer and R Ashwin's 2 for 14 (4).

While the Indian batters had a memorable day on the field, Ashwin also made a mark with his tidy spell. For the unversed, Ashwin returned to the limited-overs line-up after a gap of four years (1,578 days). His last match for Team India in the shorter formats was on July 9, 2017. Nonetheless, the wily off-spinner didn't show any signs of nerves as he dismissed the likes of Najibullah Zadran and Gulbadin Naib.

It is important to note that Ashwin not only made a staggering comeback in limited-overs, but he played his first game for Team India after the WTC final. Not being a part of the playing XI for so long could've dented Ashwin's mindset, but the experienced campaigner proved his worth once again in the face-off versus Afghanistan.

'Which Theme park should we take our kids' - Rohit Sharma spills the beans on his conversations with R Ashwin

Team India were termed as one of the strongest contenders for the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. The Virat Kohli-led side won the two warm-up encounters with ease but have fallen apart since then to lose both their matches in the Super 12 round so far. After being thrashed by Pakistan and New Zealand, the Men in Blue are starring on the brink of an early elimination and need to get their act together if they want to remain alive in the semi-finals race.

The next challenge for Team India is against Afghanistan. The Mohammad Nabi-led Afghan side have been impressive so far in the showpiece event. They won and lost a game each in the warm-up round and now have two wins from three encounters in the Super 12. If they win their remaining two games, versus India and New Zealand respectively, they will qualify for the semi-finals as they already have a superior net run-rate.

For India, they are once again dealing with problems of plenty and have failed to manage their resources wisely. The move to drop down Rohit Sharma to No. 3 in order to accommodate Ishan Kishan at the top, versus the Black Caps, was heavily criticised. Their batters have to get used to the surfaces in the UAE and need to work on their sluggish strike-rates. On the other hand, the one-time winners will also need to tweak their bowling line-up in the game versus Afghanistan.

T20 WC: R Ashwin or Rahul Chahar for Varun Chakravarthy? Predicting India's XI for Afghanistan clash

Team India completed their two warm-up games ahead of the main draw of the T20 World Cup 2021 with emphatic performances. Virat Kohli-led India beat England by 7 wickets before they demolished Australia by 9 wickets to tick several boxes and will now gear up for their tournament-opener, versus Pakistan, on October 24 (Sunday).

India and Pakistan will be locking horns with each other on the 22-yard cricket strip after a gap of two years. The last face-off between the two arch-rivals took place during the 2019 ODI World Cup, in England and Wales, when Kohli & Co. thrashed Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan by 89 runs (DLS method). Since both sides meet only during ICC or multi-nation tournaments, the excitement is on another level before the upcoming face-off.

Ahead of the clash, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan named his playing XI for India for the Pakistan clash, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (October 24). Speaking on Star Sports, Pathan named KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma as his openers whereas Captain Kohli will be batting at No. 3 (as he mentioned at the coin toss during the England warm-up tie).

Pathan's middle and lower-order comprised Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja whereas the 36-year-old went ahead with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami as his pacers. His spin department comprises Varun Chakravarthy and Jadeja as he had no space for R Ashwin and in-form fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

Interestingly, Ishan Kishan -- who smashed a 46-ball 70 (retired hurt) in the first warm-up encounter -- also misses out from Pathan's XI.

Interestingly, Ishan Kishan -- who smashed a 46-ball 70 (retired hurt) in the first warm-up encounter -- also misses out from Pathan's XI. No R Ashwin and Shardul Thakur as Irfan Pathan names his India XI for T20 WC opener vs Pakistan

R Ashwin's inclusion in India's squad for T20 World Cup 2021 came as a surprise to many. The senior spinner last played a white-ball game for India in 2017 and was a regular only in Tests with not many expecting him to feature in the T20 World Cup squad. However, Ashwin made his comeback into the side and is now likely to be one of the first-choice spinners for the Men in Blue at the showpiece event.

Captain Virat Kohli recently explained the reason behind Ashwin's inclusion in the squad and said the off-spinner was rewarded for reviving his skills in white-ball cricket. Ashwin might not have played white-ball cricket for India since 2017 but remains one of the vital cogs of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Tamil Nadu side in the domestic circuit.

“Ashwin has been rewarded for reviving his white-ball skills altogether. He bowls with a lot of courage in white-ball cricket,” Kohli said during a press conference organised by ICC on Saturday (October 16).

Kohli further went on to point out how Ashwin has been bowling well in the IPL over the last couple of years and has also taken up responsibility in pressure situations for Delhi Capitals. Kohli believes Ashwin's experience and his confidence heading into the tournament will prove handy for Team India at the T20 World Cup.

“If you saw the IPL in the last couple of years, he’s bowled difficult overs, he’s bowled against the top players in the IPL, and not being shy to put the ball in the right areas. Spinners can get intimidated by the way power hitters hit the ball, but Ashwin believed in his skill set," said the Indian skipper.

India will open their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on October 24. It remains to be seen if Ashwin will make the cut in the playing XI for the highly-anticipated clash between the two teams.

R Ashwin was rewarded for reviving his white-ball skills: Virat Kohli on spinner's selection in T20 WC squad

Delhi Capitals (DC) enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. In what was Rishabh Pant's debut season as the captain of the side, he guided DC to a top of the table finish in the league stages with an impressive 20 points from 14 matches. However, the team failed to make it to the final after suffering back-to-back defeats in both the Qualifiers.

Delhi Capitals were the best team in the league stage of the tournament as they went on to bag ten wins in 14 matches to finish on top of the table. DC lost to second-placed Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier before getting ousted by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2nd Qualifier.

Nonetheless, Pant, who was appointed as the captain of the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer ahead of the start of IPL 2021, led the side well. He was retained by DC as the captain even after Iyer's return from injury ahead of the UAE leg and led the team in all 16 matches that they played this season.

Though Pant proved his captaincy credentials by leading DC to the playoffs comfortably this season, former Delhi Capitals skipper and ex-India opener Gautam Gambhir wants the franchise to head into the new season with a new captain at the helm. While speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir backed R Ashwin to replace Pant as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022. Gambhir said it might appear as a bizarre call but he would back Ashwin as the captain next season.

'It maybe a bizarre call': Gautam Gambhir names Delhi Capitals star who should replace Rishabh Pant as captain

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner R Ashwin was involved in an ugly spat with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan and pace Tim Southee in the clash between the two sides in IPL 2021 last week. The heated argument took place after Ashwin ran an extra run in the game when the ball deflected after a throw hit Pant, who was batting in the middle with the spinner.

Ashwin running for an extra un off the deflection did not go down well with KKR players as Morgan and Southee both had a heated exchange with Ashwin after the spinner was dismissed in the final over of DC's innings. The spat between Ashwin and Morgan took an ugly turn after the KKR captain termed Ashwin's act of taking the extra run 'disgraceful', igniting the 'spirit of cricket debate' once again.

While several former cricketers backed Ashwin as he was within the rules to take the extra run, some slammed the Delhi Capitals spinner for his action. Ashwin himself had shared a long thread on Twitter, lashing out at Morgan and Southee while explaining his side of the story. Now, batting legend Gavaskar has shared his views on the incident and said it is unfair to blame Ashwin. The former India captain questioned why nobody is asking Pant why did he take the run when the ball had hit him.

"What nobody asked is, why did Pant run? He was the one who was struck by the ball and if at all anybody should have known that the tradition is not to take the run after the ball is deflected, then it was the Delhi skipper. Maybe, in the heat of the battle and the anxiety to add runs to the team’s total, he took that extra run," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Gavaskar further stated that Pant could have stepped in at the time and tried to defuse the situation when Morgan and Ashwin were having a go at each other. However, the batting legend insisted that it is not easy to control emotions when playing in the scorching heat of the UAE.

"But why blame Ashwin? He may not have even seen the ball hitting his skipper as he would be intent on getting to his end and may have only seen the ball that was away from a fielder and so responded for the extra run. Pant could have stepped in and defused the situation, but in the intensity of the battle and especially in the hot and humid desert atmosphere, it is extremely tough to keep a cool head, so he may have not realised what had happened," Gavaskar added.

'Why did Rishabh Pant run?': Sunil Gavaskar feels unfair to blame R Ashwin after ugly spat with Eoin Morgan

The debate over of 'spirit of cricket' has taken the centre stage once again after the controversy involving R Ashwin and Eoin Morgan became one of the major talking points in the ongoing second leg of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Morgan and Delhi Capitals (DC) Ashwin were involved in a heated altercation during the game between the two sides on Tuesday (September 28) in Sharjah.

The incident took place during DC's innings when Ashwin went for a run after a KKR fielder threw the ball which hit Rishabh Pant and went awry. Ashwin completed the single which baffled KKR players including captain Morgan and pacer Tim Southee, who were seen exchanging a few words with Ashwin after he was dismissed in the final over.

Ashwin too hit back and responded to the duo. The controversy escalated further after Morgan called Ashwin's act 'disgraceful' post the game. Morgan's comments sparked a debate over the 'spirit of cricket' with many blaming Ashwin for taking the run. However, Gambhir has backed Ashwin over his call to take the run and has slammed those criticising the DC spinner.

"I back Ravichandran Ashwin 100 percent. What he did was well within the rules. He has done nothing wrong. And there are so many people who are jumping into it, they have got nothing to do with it. Probably to increase some social media followers or to have some presence somewhere so that people can talk about it. It makes no sense. R Ashwin is absolutely correct," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Earlier on Thursday, Ashwin took to Twitter to open up on the controversy and shared his side of the story. The DC spinner had asked Morgan and Southee to not take moral high grounds as he explained why he was within the rules to take the run.

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan also shared his views on the controversy and defended Ashwin by bringing up the 2019 World Cup final where England were awarded 4 runs after a ball deflected off Ben Stokes' bat while he was attempting a run and raced away for four.

"People use the term spirit of the game for their own convenience. You remember 2019 World Cup? Let’s not get into it. If you have issues with the rule, change the rule," Pathan said.

"Even in that run-out issue, I would do it differently, but Ashwin was definitely well within the rules. Ashwin should back himself definitely and we all will back him," he added.

Talking about the DC versus KKR clash, the latter won the toss and asked DC to bat first. None of the Delhi batters managed to get going for long as they only managed 127-9 as Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine and Lockie Ferguson took two wickets apiece. In reply, KKR were made to work hard for their runs but vital knocks from Nitish Rana, Narine and Shubman Gill led them to a 3-wicket win with 10 balls to spare.

In reply, KKR were made to work hard for their runs but vital knocks from Nitish Rana, Narine and Shubman Gill led them to a 3-wicket win with 10 balls to spare. IPL 2021: DC spinner R Ashwin opens up on heated altercation with KKR stars Eoin Morgan, Tim Southee

Match 41 of the IPL 2021 edition saw the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) lock horns with the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Sharjah. While the DC franchise were favourites to win versus Eoin Morgan & Co., they conceded a three-wicket win to the KKR line-up in defence of a modest 128.

Though the IPL 2020 runners-up fought hard and gave their all, KKR managed to edge past them courtesy vital knocks from Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine and Nitish Rana. The clash, however, gained eyeballs for the heated exchange between R Ashwin and KKR captain Morgan. After Ashwin sneaked in another run when the ball ricocheted off his partner Pant, it didn't please bowler Tim Southee and Morgan.

Following his dismissal, Ashwin was, thus, caught in an altercation with Morgan and Southee as Dinesh Karthik played the peace-maker. After all this, former KKR captain opened up on the whole episode and told at the press conference, "I know that Rahul Tripathi threw the ball and it hit Rishabh Pant and then it ricocheted of that and Ashwin started to run. I do not think Morgan appreciates that, he is someone when the ball hits the batter, he expects them not to run because of the spirit of cricket."

As the episode as once again led to the never-ending talks around the 'Spirit of Cricket', former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag also reacted on the same. He took a jibe at England's limited-overs and KKR captain Morgan and tweeted, "On July 14th , 2019 when it ricocheted of Ben Stokes' bat in the final over, Mr. Morgan sat on a dharna outside Lord’s and refused to hold the World Cup trophy and New Zealand won. IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag takes a dig at Eoin Morgan following KKR captain's heated exchange with R Ashwin

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner R Ashwin was involved in a heated argument with Eoin Morgan and Tim Southee during his side's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2021 on Tuesday. Ashwin was dismissed by Southee in the final over of DC's innings following which he was seen exchanging a few words with Southee and Morgan.

The incident took place after the first ball of the 20th over of DC's innings when Ashwin tried to play a pull shot against Southee. The spinner ended up getting caught by Nitish Rana on 9 off 8 balls. As Ashwin was walking back to the dressing room, Southee hurled a few words at him before things got heated up between the duo.

KKR captain Morgan also got involved in the verbal tussle as Ashwin exchanged a few words with the England batsman as well before KKR wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik intervened. Karthik was seen calming Ashwin down and asking him to walk back. It remains unclear what prompted the heated exchange between Southee and the DC spinner. However, the video of the face-off soon went viral on social media.

Talking about the game, Delhi Capitals suffered their first defeat of the UAE leg of IPL 2021 as they failed to defend the low-key total of 127 runs after a disappointing batting performance. DC got off to a slow start with openers Steve Smith (39) and Shikhar Dhawan (24) adding 35 runs for the first wicket before the middle-order suffered an unexpected collapse.

Captain Rishabh Pant top-scored with 39 off 36 balls for his side and helped them post a decent total on the board. It proved to be a tricky chase for KKR with their middle-order also crumbling under pressure but Nitish Rana's unbeaten 36 and crucial knocks from Sunil Narine (21) and Shubman Gill (30) helped KKR win by 3 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

BCCI announced a 15-man squad for Virat Kohli-led Team India's forthcoming T20 World Cup on September 8. While the squad features some surprise inclusions and few notable omission, R Ashwin's comeback has surely made heads turn.

For the unversed, the 34-year-old Ashwin wasn't favoured in the limited-overs squad since mid-2017. However, with Yuzvendra Chahal's dip in form and Washington Sundar's injury, Ashwin was preferred for the T20 WC. Though Ashwin's record in T20 WC is exceptional, with 20 wickets in 15 innings, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels it is just a consolation for his England Tests snub.

Ashwin didn't feature in the four Tests versus England, in the United Kingdom, and Gavaskar feels his inclusion is just a consolation as he might still find it tough to find a place in the line-up.

"Ashwin's return is a good thing but we'll have to wait and see if he gets a place in the playing XI. You have selected him in the 15, that's alright, you chose him in the squad in England as well but are not giving him the chance in the XI,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak. "So, he’s perhaps just given a consolation cup to make up for the disappointment that he might have here (in England). Will he play in the XI? Only time will tell,” he added.

Apart from Ashwin, MS Dhoni was also included in the T20 WC squad as a team mentor. On the former Indian captain's return to the Indian dressing room, Gavaskar said, "MS Dhoni being the mentor is bigger news than Ashwin's selection because a captain, who led India to the 2011 World Cup and 2007 T20 World Cup wins, if he's in that camp, then India will immensely benefit from it."

Sunil Gavaskar terms R Ashwin's inclusion in T20 WC squad as 'consolation' for England Tests snub

R Ashwin returned to the limited-overs setup after a gap of three years when India announced a 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup on Wednesday (September 8). The Virat Kohli-led Indian side is a good mix of youth and experience but Ashwin's addition surely came as a pleasant surprise as the wily off-spinner wasn't favoured in ODIs and T20Is since 2017.

Washington Sundar's untimely injury, in the run-up to the second leg of IPL 2021, led to Ashwin's name doing the rounds. As per a report in TOI, vice-captain Rohit Sharma had a huge role to play in Ashwin's inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. Rohit was involved in the team meeting, along with the Kohli-led team management, and voiced his opinion on how Ashwin has been tough to hit in the IPL in recent times.

Following Rohit, Captain Kohli also agreed and called for the inclusion of the off-spinner. In early 2021, Kohli was asked about the Delhi Capitals' (DC) spinner's addition to the limited-overs setup. Back then, the 32-year-old Kohli had mentioned how beneficial Washington Sundar has been for Team India. With his injury, Ashwin was seen as the perfect replacement for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spin-bowling all-rounder.

How Rohit Sharma's backing led to R Ashwin's inclusion in Virat Kohli-led India's T20 World Cup squad: Reports

Team India's squad for the T20 World Cup was announced on Wednesday (September 8). The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced a 15-man squad for the marquee event, which will be held in the UAE shortly after IPL 2021's second and final leg.

India's squad comprises a good mix of youth and experienced campaigners but the biggest surprise came in the form of MS Dhoni's inclusion. The former Indian captain, who announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020, has been roped in as the team mentor for the showpiece event as Virat Kohli & Co. will look to bank upon his vast experience, calm and composed nature, tactical acumen to end India's 8-year-long ICC title drought.

India have so far won the T20 World Cup only once, under Dhoni's leadership in 2007 whereas their last ICC trophy also came under the former skipper. Hence, his presence will be highly beneficial to Kohli-led brigade. Following the appointment of Dhoni in a new role, WION News' Aditya Sahay had an exclusive interaction with Bengal's veteran and Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary with regards to India's T20 WC squad, Dhoni and R Ashwin's surprise inclusion and more.

Will MS Dhoni's midas touch help India break the ICC title drought?

See, it is a huge boost for Team India. Having MS Dhoni around with the players which he has led over the period of time and even the youngsters....he has played with them in the IPL over a period of time. His experience will only help Kohli and the lower-order batters, who will have the responsibility to finish games. However, we got to realise that he's not going to be on field and play. His inputs will majorly help Kohli as a captain and the lower-order batters, but the performances will be solely dependent on the players.

It is upto Virat and the lower-order batters to get the best out of him. They can know what he was thinking in those periods when he was under pressure and got the decisions right as captain and batsman. It is, thus, entirely upto them on how to maximise his presence to the best of their abilities.

When Dhoni was fading away, not many grabbed the opportunity of becoming a finisher, except Hardik Pandya. Hence, let's see how he can help the rest, especially in the knockouts. We have seen in recent past how India have struggled in semi-finals and finals. That is where his experience will help them the most, psychologically.

'R Ashwin has been branded as a Test specialist which isn't right'

On Ashwin's inclusion: I think we all have branded Ashwin as a Test specialist. We shouldn't have done that. I can understand why he was getting picked. If you see the players who had replaced him, they were slightly better in other two departments, i.e. batting and fielding. He remains far better than all the other off-spinners in the country. But if you look at the others who replaced him, they were better in fielding and batting capacity. Overall, I think it is a great replacement.

Ashwin's record in T20 World Cup is exceptional (with 20 wickets in 15 innings in T20 WCs). Although he hasn't played limited-overs since 2017, he will still have the hunger and eagerness to prove that he belongs in this format. He has all the variations in his armoury to perform successfully and consistently. I have full faith on him to shine bright whenever given a chance in the World Cup.

For the unversed, India will commence their campaign in the T20 WC on October 24, versus Pakistan. They are in Group 2, with the Men in Green, New Zealand, Afghanistan along with two other teams who will join from the qualifiers.

ALSO READ | Virat Kohli's India squad for T20 World Cup announced, MS Dhoni named team mentor; R Ashwin included It is upto Virat and the lower-order batters to get the best out of him. ALSO READ | Twitterati hilariously trolls Gautam Gambhir after MS Dhoni named Team India's mentor for T20 World Cup 'R Ashwin has been branded as a Test specialist which isn't right' On Ashwin's inclusion: I think we all have branded Ashwin as a Test specialist.

R Ashwin reacts after being named in India's T20 World Cup squad, shares motivational quote which keeps him going

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir said that off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin`s selection in the squad for the men`s T20 World Cup gives the Indian team a completely new dimension. He added that Ashwin is a quality cricketer who should have played much more white-ball cricket.

Ashwin last played a T20I in July 2017 against West Indies and had been overlooked in the format since. With Washington Sundar unavailable due to finger injury, it opened doors for Ashwin to secure a place in the 15-man squad.

"Very happy for Ashwin. Probably, he shouldn`t have been out of the white-ball cricket anyways, and now he`s back. You will have to give it to the selectors and they`ve bought him back. It just gives you a completely new dimension," said Gambhir in a special T20 World Cup squad episode on Follow The Blues show on Star Sports on Thursday.

"He is someone, who can bowl with the new ball, he is someone who can bowl in the middle overs, he is someone who can bowl in the death as well - depending on the condition if he gets the game. For me, he is a quality cricketer, who should`ve played much more whit-ball cricket, as compared to what he has played," added Gambhir.

The 39-year-old was in full praise of batsman Suryakumar Yadav making it to the squad for the T20 World Cup and explained how Yadav is better than Shreyas Iyer, who was named in the reserves.

"Surya is a completely different class, as compared to Shreyas Iyer. He is much more versatile; he is much more unorthodox as well. In T20 cricket, you need people that are unorthodox; you want people who can hit that ball in different areas, and that is what T20 cricket is all about. He can lap you, he can late cut you, he can hit you over extra cover; he`s got all the shots, especially at No.4, because sometimes No.4 is the most tricky position to bat in T20 cricket, probably the easiest is the top three, but No.4, because you might be in when you have lost two early wickets and you still want to continue the momentum."

"Sometimes you come into the middle, when you have got what 130 for 2, and you have got to continue with the momentum. So, Surya`s got both kind of change, which probably Shreyas Iyer doesn`t have. And again, you gotta be mindful that he is coming after a serious injury and you never know what kind of a form he would be in the second leg of IPL as well. So, they`ve gone with someone, who has done really well, since he has gone into international cricket," signed off Gambhir.

India will start their T20 World Cup campaign against Group 2 rivals Pakistan in Dubai on October 24.

Even skipper Kohli mentioned that Ashwin was the part of the game plan for the second Test. "We announced 12 within the group and Ashwin definitely was part of that. Now, West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose has reacted to Manjrekar's statement.

"We all have our different opinions. We all look at greatness in different ways. Sanjay Manjrekar was a wonderful cricketer in his time. He has his opinion of that, we all have our views. But, how do you define greatness? That is a good question," Ambrose told sports presenter Karishma Kotak on 'The Curtly and Karishma Show' on YouTube.

"Because sometimes, to be quite fair, we use the word greatness loosely. So, we have to be careful with how we define greatness. According to me, greatness is when a player can be very consistent over a period of time, for years, not one or two years."

Ambrose is considered one of the stalwarts in the game of cricket. While playing for West Indies, the pacer scalped 405 wickets from 98 Tests and 225 wickets from 176 ODIs.

"Some guys can come into international cricket, and for two or three years, set the world on fire. And, for the next six to seven years, they do nothing. You cannot really judge on the first two or three years. It is over a period of time, through a whole career. At the end of your career, you can be judged if you were great or good or average," he signed off.

R Ashwin's wife reveals Covid 'nightmares' her family has been through in a week

India star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin withdrew from the Indian Premier League on Sunday to support his family during the Covid-19 pandemic, dealing a significant blow to the glitzy tournament which is taking place despite the country battling rising death rates.

Ashwin, 34, a key Test and ODI player, said he would be taking a break from playing in the lucrative T20 franchise tournament with the Delhi Capitals team.

"My family and extended family are putting up a fight against #COVID19 and I want to support them during these tough times," Ashwin tweeted.

"I expect to return to play if things go in the right direction. Thank you @DelhiCapitals."

Ashwin's decision is a major blow for the money-spinning event which is being held behind closed doors and runs until May 30.

On Sunday, a leading Indian newspaper group suspended coverage of the IPL, calling the tournament "commercialism gone crass" and "incongruous" as the record-breaking pandemic surge grips the country.

Express Publications said in a front-page editorial of its flagship English-language daily, the New Indian Express, that the paper was halting reporting on the Twenty20 event until a "semblance of normalcy is restored".

Delhi said they supported the decision taken by Ashwin.

"Extending our full support to you in these difficult times, @ashwinravi99 Sending you and your family all the strength and prayers from all of us at Delhi Capitals," the team tweeted.

Ashwin has played 77 Tests in a 10-year international career as well as 111 ODIs and 46 T20 Internationals.

He has 409 Test wickets, one of just 16 bowlers in history to break the 400-mark.

Ashwin's Twitter account has over 10 million followers.

His profile page contains the plea: "Stay home stay safe! Take your vaccine."
