Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra has raised questions over Team India's selection policy after senior spinner R Ashwin returned to the visitors' limited-overs squad for the upcoming series against West Indies. Ashwin has made his comeback to India's T20I squad and will be hoping to impress the selectors ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 this year.

Ashwin had earlier made a surprising comeback in India's T20I squad for T20 World Cup 2022 after a long gap of four years. The senior spinner did feature in a handful of matches at the World Cup before being sidelined again. He will now make his comeback in T20Is against West Indies later this month.

India will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is against West Indies from July to August and have named a strong squad despite a number of senior players missing the series. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is not part of the T20I squad and in his absence, Ashwin is expected to be India's first-choice spinner.

Cricketer turned commentator Chopra is not quite impressed with Ashwin's selection in India's T20I squad and has questioned the logic behind his comeback. Chopra questioned why Ashwin was sidelined from T20Is post the T20 World Cup last year and why has he returned to the squad now?

"Ravichandran Ashwin is back, that's an interesting one. What is the long-term perspective? Why was he not there in the team for the last 8-10 months? Why was he totally sidelined after the World Cup and why has he come back now?" Chopra said in a video on his youtube channel.

"Actually he did play five matches (including three at the World Cup), he did well but after that, he has not got too many chances. Then you should have played him against Sri Lanka and South Africa as well. You didn't play him in the T20Is in England as well although he was there in England, you could have played him," he added.

Ashwin featured in only one white-ball series for India post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022 last year. He also made his ODI comeback on the South Africa tour earlier this year where he played two ODIs before being dropped and has since failed to make his comeback for India in white-ball cricket.

Ashwin will be hoping to make an impact with the ball in the T20I series against West Indie which remains his last hope to make the cut into India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year.

After much wait, the BCCI selection committee -- headed by Chetan Sharma -- has named the India T20I squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies, which commences on July 22. While the tour will kick off with three ODIs, where Shikhar Dhawan will lead a second-stringed side, regular captain Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the side during the five T20Is.

The five T20Is will start from July 29 as the selection committee announced a strong 18-member squad, sans Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. A lot was said and written about Kohli and whether he should be skipping series despite his poor form, however, he has not been named along with premier pacer Bumrah. The duo have been rested, as per PTI, nonetheless, there is no such mention in the BCCI release and tweet.

The squad also sees the return of regular white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul, who isn't part of the England tour due to an injury. However, Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion is subject to fitness. Veteran spinner R Ashwin has made a comeback in the T20I line-up whereas there was no mention of Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal was in-form during IPL 2022 and even returned as the Player-of-the-Match in one of the two T20Is versus Ireland. In the England T20Is, he bowled six overs and returned with four scalps, at an economy of 7. Hence, it is likely that he has also been given some rest.

MS Dhoni led Team India from the 2007 T20 World Cup till the end of 2016. He gave up Test captaincy by retiring from the format in late 2014 but continued to call the shots in limited-overs till the end of 2016. Under him, India attained unimaginable success as the national team won every ICC title and were even the No. 1 ranked side from late 2009 to mid-2011.

One of India's famous wins under Dhoni came during the 2013 Champions Trophy, held in England and Wales. Back then, Australia wasn't at its dominant best but still remained competitive, just like other sides such as England, Sri Lanka and South Africa. India were also a contender for the title, however, Dhoni had a young team at his disposal. Nonetheless, India continued to perform as they reached the final without dropping a single game, including the two warm-up encounters, and faced England in the summit clash in Edgbaston, Birmingham on June 23, 2013.

In a rain-hit 20-over aside contest, India struggled to reach 129/7 as all hopes were slowly and steadily fading away. However, Indian bowlers upped the ante with a combined show to restrict England to 124/8 and claim the trophy by virtue of a five-run win in the finale.

After the match, Dhoni revealed how he motivated his young troops before their 130-run defence. "The first and foremost thing was don't look up, God is not coming to save you. You have to fight it out. We are the No 1 ranked team, let's play like that. If we lose, they will have to score the runs, we won't make easy for them," Dhoni had told Nasser Hussain in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Ahead of India's tour of England, wily off-spinner R Ashwin has tested positive for Covid-19. Thus, the 35-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder hasn't left for England along with the rest of the squad and will remain in quarantine for the time being.

After completing his medical protocols, Ashwin will travel to England but might miss Rohit Sharma & Co.'s three-day practice game versus Leicestershire, ahead of the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus Ben Stokes' England.

"Ashwin hasn't travelled with the squad to UK as he has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure," a BCCI source told the news agency PTI. "But we are hopeful that Ashwin will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, Ashwin might miss the practice game against Leicestershire,” the source added.

India spinner R Ashwin tests positive for COVID-19, does not board flight to England: Report

The Indian cricket team is currently in England ahead of the one-off fifth Test against the hosts in Edgbaston. The Rohit Sharma-led side is training at the Leicestershire county ground and are scheduled to play a four-day warm-up match against the county team which gets underway from June 24. India have travelled to England without senior spinner R Ashwin, who reportedly missed his flight due to COVID-19.

There were question marks over Ashwin's absence in the squad which landed in Leicester last week. However, on Monday reports confirmed that the senior spinner had to miss his flight after he tested positive for COVID-19. The Indian team had departed for England on June 16.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, Ashwin has now fully recovered from the virus and is expected to fly out soon to join the rest of his teammates in Leicester ahead of the start of the practice match. BCCI sources confirmed that arrangements have been made for Ashwin to fly to the UK likely on Wednesday (June 24).

The report also states that spin all-rounder Jayant Yadav was kept on stand-by as a replacement for Ashwin and had been called to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru (NCA) in case the senior spinner failed to recover in time. However, Ashwin will now board his flight to England soon in what comes as a huge boost for India ahead of the one-off Test against England.

Ashwin has been one of India's most successful spinners in Test cricket and is currently the country's second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format with 442 wickets from 86 matches. He is expected to feature in the playing XI for the 5th Test against England in Edgbaston which begins on July 01.

R Ashwin to join Indian squad in England in next couple of days after missing flight due to COVID-19

India and Australia were engaged in a high-voltage four-match Test series Down Under in 2020/21. After Virat Kohli-led India lost the opening Test, in Adelaide, by eight wickets -- being dismissed for a paltry 36 in the second essay -- many thought it would all go downhill for the visitors from thereon.

With no Kohli for the remainder of the series, the onus fell on stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane. India not only levelled the series in the second Test, at the MCG, Melbourne, they managed to secure a draw form the jaws of defeat in the third and penultimate match, in Sydney, before winning the series decider in style at The Gabba, Brisbane.

There were plenty of eye-catching moments in the series, including Rishabh Pant's counterattack, Cheteshwar Pujara's rocksolid presence, R Ashwin-Hanuma Vihari's blockathon, Md Siraj battling racial abuse to shine with the ball, sledging, etc. Recently, Ashwin recalled the intense verbal spat with then Aussie Test captain Tim Paine during the last session of the SCG Test.

During Ashwin-Vihari's unbroken 62-run sixth-wicket stand, keeper-captain Paine tried to distract the wily spin all-rounder as hosts were eyeing a win in defence of 407. The two Indian batters had joined in with the score 272-5 and, hence, had more than a session to play for a draw. With them going well, captain Paine tried to resort to sledging. He told Ashwin, "can't wait to get him to the Gabba". To this, the 35-year-old said, "can't wait to take him to India which would be his last series".

Recently, Ashwin spilled the beans on his statement. "I think Vihari will remember why I said that as well. Because we had a discussion on the way Tim Paine was batting through the series. I kept telling these guys and we got a very different sort of a short leg position, which was forward short leg and then we usually have a leg slip. We had a chat... Rahane, myself, Vihari and we said, 'Pujara will generally stand at leg slip but this guy won't stand with the helmet. Let's put him somewhere else and get this guy under the lid'," Ashwin said during the trailer launch of the just-released docu-series “Bandon Mein Tha Dum” (i.e. a celebration of India's famous Test series triumph over the Aussies during the 2020/21 tour).

"We had this conversation and parked him there in a very awkward position and he (Paine) actually nicked off there. We had a celebration and I told Vihari, 'This guy better not come to India. If he actually comes to India, he will be going there every single time. At the end of the day, he was having a go at us when we were batting and it just came out of my mind because we had a conversation like that. It was very instantaneous," he further added.

Paine-Ashwin sledging didn't stop at once. Paine had replied saying, "At least my teammates like me, d**khead. I’ve got a lot more Indian friends than you do. “Even your teammates think you’re a goose. Don’t they? Every one of them," he continued.

Ashwin countered by saying, “Tell me when you’re done". "I’ll talk all day, mate. Wait until you get to the Gabba, pal,” Paine responded. To Paine and many Aussies' surprise, India went to the Gabba Test with the series levelled at 1-1 and won the final encounter by three wickets, chasing an improbable 327 on the final day. With this, they breached Australia's 32-year-long fortress as well.

Ashwin recalls intense sledging episode with Paine, shares story behind 'that will be your last series' remark

India and Australia were engaged in a gruelling four-match Test series in 2020/21 Down Under. During the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Australia, India had their back against the wall at most times but found ways to stage a comeback at all times to eventually beat the then Tim Paine-led Australia 2-1 in their own backyard and retain the BG Trophy.

After being 1-0 down following the series opener defeat, India was without then regular captain Virat Kohli -- who was out on maternity leave -- but defied all odds to emerge on top eventually. Under Ajinkya Rahane, India levelled the series in the second Test, at the MCG, and then pulled off a heist to save the third and penultimate encounter before winning the series finale by three wickets.

Recently, R Ashwin recalled India's miraculous SCG Test escape, where his and Hanuma Vihari's unbeaten 62-run sixth-wicket stand saved the visitors from the jaws of defeats. "It was surprising to me that I went bowling after the injury with painkillers. And bowled 13 or 14 over on the trot. It was so bad I was rolling on the floor because of the pain. My wife and kids helped me to stand and then the Physio came to check me. I went to the game crawling, but did my best," Ashwin told ANI.

The 62-run stand between Ashwin and Vihari helped India save the Test match when they were asked to chase 407. At one stage, India were 250-3 and on the attack courtesy of Rishabh Pant's 97 and Cheteshwar Pujara's gritty 77. However, their dismissals exposed India's lower order, filled with injured players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Vihari, and Ashwin.

Recalling how Vihari and he came up with a strategy to not let Australia break their stand, Ashwin added, "We both got comfortable the instant we went in. We realised what problem we had, he could not come forward and be going on the backfoot. He was struggling from the hamstring injury. When I went to the crease I could not go forward against the fast bowlers. So in that situation, I said we will rotate and see how this will work."

My wife and kids helped me to stand: R Ashwin recalls India's miraculous escape in SCG Test

Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2022 final showdown on Sunday evening (May 29) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Despite winning the toss in the crucial encounter, the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise fell flat against the favourites Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat franchise as they went onto lift the elusive title in their maiden IPL season.

Batting first, Samson & Co. struggled as the big guns -- Jos Buttler, Samson, Shimron Hetmyer, etc. -- couldn't do much and the RR franchise posted only 130-9 (courtesy of Hardik's 3/17 and Sai Kishore's twin scalps). In reply, RR had restricted GT to 23-2, however, Hardik (34), Shubman Gill's 45* and an unbeaten 19-ball 32 from David Miller took GT home. After the clash, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag slammed R Ashwin for not resorting to his off-spin and bowling the carrom ball during the summit clash.

Sehwag has questioned Ashwin's bowling approach, saying he should have stuck to conventional off-spin on the surface. “Ashwin should have stuck with his off-spin deliveries because it was troubling the batters. Instead, he bowled his carrom balls," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“There was even a rough patch formed by the end, that could have troubled Gill. He could have tried to dismiss Pandya as well like that. But, his mindset is different, tries for wickets with his variations," the iconic player asserted.

Sehwag also opined that RR should have stuck to chasing, which they did brilliantly in Qualifier 2 versus the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and should also placed an extra pacer on a surface akin for fast bowlers in Ahmedabad. "RR knew how hard it is to play pacers on this surface, but they still went with both their spinners instead of a fourth fast bowling option. They will also question themselves that should they have batted first after winning the toss after chasing so well in Qualifier 2," he further added.

IPL 2022 final: Virender Sehwag questions R Ashwin for not sticking to off spin during GT vs RR clash

R Ashwin remains a cricketer who loves to experiment and add new dimensions to his game. Even in IPL 2022, he has not only contributed for the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) in his primary role, i.e. with the ball in hand, but he has also stepped up with the bat and performed different roles with aplomb.

Ahead of the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise's must-win game versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Qualifier 2 of the 15th season, Ashwin opened up on his time at the franchise and also spoke in detail about his playing style. The 35-year-old wily spinner has never shied away from trying out new things to improve his game and recalled a handy advice from former Indian head coach Duncan Fletcher.

In a candid conversation on Rajasthan Royals' official YouTube channel, the offie said, "Years ago, we had a head coach called Duncan Fletcher for the Indian cricket team. I used to go and ask him, “how do I improve? How do I get better?' He said ‘the only way you could get better is by making mistakes and failing in front of people’. And that's what I've always done all through my life."

On his experiemental nature on the 22-yard cricket strip, from resorting to the controversial mode of dismissal, i.e. mankading, trying out different variations with the ball and adding new shots to his armoury, Ashwin said, "I've received a lot of criticism for how I wanted to expand beyond the realm. Sometimes people just may feel, why is he doing all these things? Is he over-ambitious? Is he trying to do too much? But that's just me. If you take that out of me, you won't get this person. So yes, I come with a lot of problems! If I'm utlizied and if I'm given the form of expressions I require, I can explore boundaries."

'Only way you could get better is...' - R Ashwin recalls handy advice from ex-India coach Duncan Fletcher

Senior Indian spinner R Ashwin has been enjoying a brilliant campaign with his new team Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. While he has been among the wickets with the ball, Ashwin has also reinvented himself with the willow and has played some crucial knocks for his side. Ashwin recently opened up on his new role as a batter for RR in the lower-middle order and said it is the most unforgiving job.

Ashwin, who was released by Delhi Capitals (DC) earlier this year, was roped in by Rajasthan Royals at the IPL 2022 mega auction. He has been phenomenal for the 2008 champions and has been contributing with both bat and the ball. While he has 11 wickets to his name in 14 matches so far this season, Ashwin has also scored 183 runs at an impressive strike rate of over 146.

The spin all-rounder has been used both as a floater and a pinch-hitter in the RR batting line-up and has managed to deliver with the bat when asked to. He was also the first batter to retire out this season and also notched up his maiden IPL fifty against Delhi Capitals after being sent to bat up the order.

Opening up on batting in the lower-middle order, Ashwin said it is the most unforgiving job in cricket as he heaped praise on CSK skipper MS Dhoni for his incredible finishing skills. Dhoni, who is regarded as one of the best finishers in the game, has bailed his team out of trouble on several occasions while batting in the lower middle-order and has also won numerous matches for CSK as a finisher.

IPL 2022 updated points table: Rajasthan Royals confirm place in Qualifier 1, beat Chennai Super Kings

On Friday evening (May 20), the one-time winners Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) will face the defending champions and four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 68 at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.

While Rajasthan have very much made it to the playoffs (they just need to ensure their positive NRR isn't hit badly even in case of a loss), they still have lots to play for. If they win, they will assure themselves of a top-two finish, however, a loss will mean they will have to take a longer route to reach the final. On the other hand, the Chennai franchise will be desperate to finish off a forgettable season with a win. So far, they have managed only four victories from 13 games and have been a pale shadow of themselves.

Talking about Rajasthan, Jos Buttler remains the Orange Cap holder but has lost some form in the recent outings. He will like to get back among runs before the playoffs. RR would be eager to finalise their team combination, especially knowing who will be their fourth overseas player, as the time to chop and change has gone. CSK, on the other hand, have been rusty with both bat and ball. Expect some more new faces to appear in the playing XI and learn from none other than MS Dhoni, who will play his last game on the 22-yard cricket strip this year.

Match prediction for CSK vs RR clash: The venue has been favourable for batters as well as the spinners. Expect a high-scoring affair, around 165-170-plus, especially if RR bat first. While the odds favour RR to pip CSK, will the Yellow Army stun the 2008 champions with a narrow win?

Courtesy of his spell, the 35-year-old off-spinner became the eighth bowler overall to enter the 150-wicket club in IPL. In addition, he joined Harbhajan Singh to become only the second off-spinner to take 150 scalps in the premier tournament.

Riyan Parag smashed a match-defining unbeaten half-century before the bowling unit lived up to its reputation to hand Rajasthan Royals a 29-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Indian Premier League match here on Tuesday.

Parag (56 not out off 31 balls) single-handedly took his side to 144 for 8 with his unbeaten half-century, which is his highest score in IPL. He struck three boundaries and four sixes during his knock. Parag marshalled the RR lower-order brilliantly and smashed Harshal Patel for a boundary and two huge sixes in the final over to take RR to a decent total after being sent in to bat.

But RCB's chase never got going as RR bowlers, led by young Kuldeep Sen (4/20), Ravichandran Ashwin (3/17) and Prasidh Krishna (2/23), bundled out RR for 115 in 19.3 overs.

Opening the innings on the back of two consecutive first-ball ducks, Virat Kohli started on a cagey note but lit up the stadium and raised the hopes of his fans when he struck two back-to-back boundaries of Trent Boult to start his innings.

But as it has been happening in the tournament, Kohli flopped once again when a Prasidh Krishna bouncer got the better of him in the next over. RCB's problems compounded in the seventh over when Kuldeep Sen, who replaced Obed McCoy in the playing XI, picked up two big wickets -- of captain Faf du Plessis (23) and Glenn Maxwell (0) -- with successive balls.

But Shahbaz Ahmed somehow kept his wicket intact to deny Sen a hat-trick. With RCB struggling at 38 for three in the seventh over, it was match on from here on. Indian domestic players -- Rajat Patidar (16) and Suyash Prabhudessai -- failed miserably, leaving the difficult task of finishing the innings once again on the shoulders of Dinesh Karthik (6).

But it was not Karthik's day as he was run out cheaply. Ahmed (17 off 27) too was not in his elements and struggled to hit the ball. Earlier, RCB's decision to bowl first yielded great results as they picked up wickets at regular intervals, not allowing RR any scope of building a big partnership.

Josh Hazlewood (2/19), Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (2/23) and Mohammed Siraj (2/30) picked up two wickets each to stifle the Royals' batting line-up. Devdutt Padikkal (7) and Jos Buttler (8) failed to give RR a good start and the decision to promote Ashwin (17) also backfired.

Siraj accounted for both Padikkal and Ashwin in his successive overs, while Hazlewood picked up the all-important wicket of Buttler, caught by Siraj inches above the ground as the batter failed to get over a short delivery, looping his pull to mid-on.

Sanju Samson (27 off 21 balls) and Daryl Mitchell (16) tried to forge a partnership, sharing 35 runs for the fourth wicket before de Silva went through the gates of RR skipper as the batter went for an extravagant reverse sweep.

Mitchell failed to get going and tried to play the role of an anchor, holding one end up and together with Parag added 31 runs. But the New Zealander's struggle was cut short by Hazlewood as in a desperate effort to break the shackles, he gave a simple catch to Maxwell at long-on.

At 100 for 5 after 15 overs, RR's effort to post a decent target received yet another jolt in the form of Shimron Hetmyer (3), who fell to de Silva caught in the deep while going for a slog sweep. Boult (5) was the next to depart, courtesy a stunning catch from Kohli at midwicket off Harshal Patel.

RR's struggle can be gauged from the fact that they failed to find the fence for seven consecutive overs from 12 to 18th. Parag finally broke it in the 19th over by lifting Hazzlewood over the extra cover fence.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Delhi Capitals versus Rajasthan Royals clash

Match 30 of the IPL 2022 edition saw Rajasthan Royals (RR) face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Monday (April 18). The match went down to the wire as the high-scoring thriller produced plenty of moments for the ardent fans before the one-time winners Sanju Samson-led RR franchise emerged on top by seven runs.

The clash saw as many as 427 runs being scored in less than 40 overs along with 15 wickets being fallen. Thus, the match had something for everyone but it was predominantly led by the big-hitters. With RR being asked to bat first, they rode on Jos Buttler's 103 and rapid knocks from Samson-Shimron Hetmyer to post 217-5. In reply, KKR were in the hunt courtesy of skipper Shreyas Iyer's 85 and Aaron Finch's 58 along with Umesh Yadav's cameo before Yuzvendra Chahal's 5 for 40 propelled RR past the finish line.

R Ashwin, who returned with a wicket in the form of KKR's Andre Russell, was also part of the RR XI for the epic face-off versus KKR. Recalling his funny chat with Navdeep Saini and Prasidh Krishna, during Rajasthan's batting, the wily off-spin bowling all-rounder revealed how Saini kept the mood light in the dugout during the tense contest.

“Everybody was laughing while we were batting. Sanga (Kumar Sangakkara) was laughing, and so were others. Except for a group, say a squad of four or five members was totally serious. And those were me, Saini, Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, & Boult because we were going to bat next right? Saini did not play yesterday (in the game against KKR). Also, McCoy seems to be a silent type. And we were watching the match and then something happened like how it happens in Tamil cinema," Ashwin began, as he narrated the incident on his YouTube channel.

"Saini casually started like, "Bhaiya... what do you think are the safe total runs that should be on the board?" I was looking at the total & replied back to him that they are playing well... So 230 runs should be safe for us. And Prasidh Krishna was like, "do you really think 230 is enough?"

He kept watching the match but it looked like he was not having any emotions on his face. And I said to him, you asked me a question and now, you are quiet. He said, “Bhaiya, I was having a deep contemplation and I think 300 runs should really be enough".

“He made us all burst into laughter even though it was a very tense situation. It was really good. After the match, we were going back to our dressing room. Kuldeep Sen was very happy. Saini came to me and said, this is why I was saying to you that 300 would have been the safest total. I was having a conversation with the Team management, Rajamani and all said that we were short of 10-15 runs. And Saini was like, Bhaiya, I already told you right. We were actually short of 80 runs,” Ashwin revealed.

IPL 2022: DC's game vs PBKS to go ahead despite COVID-19 scare, RR clash shifted from Pune to Mumbai

There were plenty of top performers in Rajasthan Royals (RR) - Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clash in match 30 of IPL 2022 edition, held on Monday evening (April 18) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. While Jos Buttler's 103 and rapid knocks from skipper Sanju Samson-Shimron Hetmyer set it up for RR as they posted 217-5, after being asked to bat first, Yuzvendra Chahal's five-fer and Obed McCoy's twin strikes helped Rajasthan beat KKR by seven runs in a high-scoring thriller.

Apart from Chahal, Buttler and the likes, R Ashwin also contributed to RR's famous win over KKR. While Ashwin returned with 4-0-38-1, he accounted for the wicket of danger man Andre Russell. The West Indian came out to bat at No. 5 with more than six overs left in KKR's run-chase. With skipper Shreyas Iyer going well from the other end, Russell could've easily completed the run-chase with a few overs to spare had he got his eye in.

Nonetheless, Samson decided to end Ashwin's spell by making him bowl the 14th over as the wily off-spinner aimed to send off Russell. The 35-year-old succeeded and bamboozled the all-rounder for a golden duck. Here's the magical delivery from Ashwin which led to Russell's dismissal and spun RR back into the contest:

In match 20 of IPL 2022, on Sunday evening (April 10), the RR franchise faced the in-form KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After two successive wins and then a loss, RR had to return to winning ways and they did courtesy Chahal's match-winning 4-0-41-4. He accounted for the scalps of Quinton de Kock, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya and Dushmantha Chameera to guide his side to a narrow three-run win, in defence of 166 (being asked to bat first).

Courtesy his spell, Chahal scripted a new record as he became the second-fastest to the 150-wicket club in IPL (in his 118th match). He is the fourth Indian -- all spinners -- to enter the elite club.

Had seen him step out, had an intuition he'd come again (Badoni). Bowled it wider. Don't think a lot about my bad games."

R Ashwin left many surprised as he decided to retire out while batting during his side Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday (April 10). Ashwin became the first batter in the history of IPL to retire out during a game as he walked off the pitch voluntarily without getting dismissed or injured.

Ashwin, who came out to bat at number six for RR in their clash against LSG, was batting on 28 off 23 balls when he decided to walk off the pitch retired out and allowed Riyan Parag to take the strike. Parag went on to score 8 off just 4 balls including a six. His runs proved crucial for RR as they went on to beat LSG by just 3 runs after successfully defending the total of 165 runs.

Ashwin recently opened up on his decision to retire out in the 19th over and said it was a 'moment thing'. Ashwin explained in football terms how T20 is a team game and such decisions can sometimes help the team in turning around the result of a game.

"It was an in the moment thing," Ashwin told Cricbuzz on his decision to retire out. "T20 is more a team game than we all know. It is almost as much as football. The goal scorers are like your opening batter or wicket-takers. But they are worth it only if your goalkeeper or defenders are ready to do what it takes," he added.

As per the rules, a batter can retire any time during the game and walk off the pitch if he wants to and he is considered retired out in such a case. However, as per the laws, if the batter has decided to retire without any injury or illness, he can return in that innings to bat again only after the consent of the opposition captain.

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara was also asked about Ashwin's decision post the game and he revealed it was a joint call taken by both the spinner and the RR management. He also lauded Ashwin for sacrificing his wicket and for his excellent bowling performance.

"Ashwin himself was asking from the field as well, and we had discussed it just before that, as to what we would do," Sangakkara said.

Rishabh Pant was having a torrid time at the highest level prior to India's tour of Australia in 2020-21. Ahead of the epic tour Down Under, Pant was under the scanner for his keeping, fitness concerns and shot selections as many former cricketers and experts called for his omission.

Nonetheless, the script changed emphatically for Pant ever since he was included in the playing XI during the second Test, at the MCG, Melbourne, during the Australia tour. The left-hander played a gutsy and match-saving 97 in the third and penultimate Test, at the SCG, Sydney, before playing the best knock of his career, so far, with a match-winning 89 not out in the final Test, at Brisbane, to help India win the series 2-1.

Recently, Pant recalled his SCG Test heroics, where he battled injury to slam a memorable 97 and helped the visitors to a draw on the final day.

Speaking to India women's star cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues, on Dream 11, Pant said, "We were under pressure, they gave us some 400 something. Injury happened in the first innings. He bowled a bounce, it kept low and it hit my elbow and I was unable to move my hand in the first innings. I didn't keep in the second innings. Wriddhi (Wriddhiman Saha) bhai did all the keeping."

"We went for a scan and it was bone bruise. It wasn't a major injury, but it was very painful. We were talking to the physios because I had to bat, by hook or by crook. So we decided to take injection to help with the pain. We have to see in the nets obviously, at first. So, I took the painkiller injection during the game, went to the nets and I was trying to hold the bat but it was paining. I couldn't hold my bat properly. After this there's Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood and they will be bowling a lot faster," he pointed out.

Pant opined, “I was just telling myself, 'you have to do this, there is no choice.' Firstly, there was no intention of winning the match. First goal was to draw, because it was the last day and we needed 400 runs. Then there was an idea of making me bat at No.5 because I was injured and even if I got out then the batters to come could still look to remake. It was still paining and on top of that I took a painkiller pill too."

"Rahane got out before lunch and I got tensed. I went inside, I couldn't get my way, pressure was building, Aussies were sledging and because they were up in the game and they wanted to win. Then it was my threshold, mid on was up and he bowled me there and I hit him over mid on for a boundary. Next ball he bowled there, after a few overs, and I hit him for a six. Next over the long on was back and I was playing my normal game and I was getting runs," he revealed.

"Then there was good partnership that happened between me a Pujara and suddenly the momentum of the match changed and we were in a position to win the match. And slowly, my pain started lessening because I was concentrating entirely on every ball and so the focus on the pain went away.

"Then I scored 97. I was feeling bad, but not for missing out on my hundred because I felt that I could have won the match for India from there," added Pant.

While Pant couldn't lead India to a win in the third Test, he stood tall in the final Test with an attacking 89 not out at Australia's fortress, at The Gabba, Brisbane, to help Ajinkya Rahane-led visitors chase down 328 on the final day of the series.

Match 13 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) face the three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (April 5).

Both sides are coming into this game on the back of a win in their previous outing. While RCB beat the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller last week, RR emerged on top of the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-scoring encounter on April 2 (Saturday) to remain unbeaten after their opening two fixtures.

So far, RR have played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune and at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. Thus, they will be tested at the Wankhede, where the pitch has tested the batters and has assisted the pacers in the powerplays. It will be interesting to see how they respond to the change in conditions at the iconic stadium.

Predicting RR's XI for RCB fixture

Given that RR have a settled line-up, with their batters expressing themselves and having a lot of variety in the bowling department, they might not be willing to make wholesome changes in the line-up. Nonetheless, they would be hoping for a turnaround from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hasn't performed so far in the two games (scoring 20 and 1). The other chink in RR's armour can be their sixth bowling option. Predicting RR's XI for RCB fixture Given that RR have a settled line-up, with their batters expressing themselves and having a lot of variety in the bowling department, they might not be willing to make wholesome changes in the line-up. Nonetheless, they would be hoping for a turnaround from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hasn't performed so far in the two games (scoring 20 and 1). The other chink in RR's armour can be their sixth bowling option. They will hope for their main bowlers to strike at regular intervals as Riyan Parag is their only additional option if one from their bowling unit has an off-day Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Ravichandran Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna

IPL 2022: Will table-toppers go unchanged? Predicting Sanju Samson-led RR's likely playing XI vs RCB

A new season will begin for both Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) camp as the two sides will square off with each other in match 5 of the ongoing IPL 2022 edition. This will also be the first-ever match to be held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, Pune in the 15th season of the cash-rich league.

Talking about the RR franchise, they have revamped in style after finishing the IPL 2021 edition on the seventh spot. Post the two-day mega auction, in mid-February 2022, the Sanju Samson & Co. have added more strength to the squad with the addition of Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, R Ashwin, Jimmy Neesham, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, etc.

Here's the predicted playing XI for RR ahead of their season-opener versus SRH:

Jos Buttler is very likely to open. Given his stature and ability to put the opposition on the back foot from ball one, he will continue to start at the top and is likely to be accompanied by Yashasvi Jaiswal or Padikkal. Jaiswal struck form in the second and final leg of IPL 2021 and, hence, can be preferred once again to open with Buttler. Padikkal has also opened for his previous franchise, i.e. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but has played at No. 3 in his twin outings for India in the shortest format.

RR might like to remain flexible with the No. 3 spot. They might be temped to send either Samson or Padikkal depending on the situation (Samson for Buttler, Padikkal for Jaiswal, respectively). Hetmyer looks like a certain at No. 5, followed by the likes of James Neesham, Riyan Parag and the main bowlers.

IPL 2022: Padikkal or Jaiswal as Buttler's opening partner? Predicting Sanju Samson-led RR's playing XI vs SRH

Recently, the New Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced its new code of Laws for 2022, which will come into force from October 1. Among the new code of laws introduced, one significant change that is set to come into play is that the controversial mode of dismissal, i.e. Mankading has been moved from 'unfair play' section to 'run out'.

One of the advocates of the controversial dismissal, R Ashwin has now finally opened up on the significant change brought forward by the MCC. For the unversed, the 35-year-old wily off-spinner had mankaded Jos Buttler during IPL 2019 edition, leading to a huge debate on the controversial mode of dismissal. Now, Ashwin has shared his reaction and also has an important message for the bowlers.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Non-striker leaving the crease early is the actual unfair play in this whole scenario. Not the bowler running them out."

“Earlier, it was termed a Mankad. But it has been changed now to run out. They (MCC) have destigmatized the entire concept and have termed it run-out law. The bowler was earlier expected to give a warning when the batsman leaves the crease at the non-striker's end. Now they have announced that what the non-striker is doing is wrong and, therefore, bowlers can actually run them out if the non-striker tries to leave the crease before the ball is delivered by the bowler. Bowlers used to feel bad about doing this, wondering how our team batsman would feel and what the cricketing world would think if we did it. Thinking about these consequences, they used to not run them out," he further pointed out.

Ashwin asserted, "the extra step the non-striker is taking might end up destroying your entire career. If the non-striker ends up on strike because of that extra step he is taking, he might smash a six, whereas the current striker might have gotten out. So, if you take a wicket, your career will advance, whereas if you are smashed for a six, your career may suffer. The impact is huge. So, the bowlers should not have any second thoughts on running the non-striker out, in my opinion," he added.

It is to be noted that Ashwin is gearing up for the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, where he will team up with Buttler -- whom he had mankaded -- in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) camp.

'Bowlers shouldn't have any....: R Ashwin reacts as 'Mankading' moved from 'unfair play' section to 'run out'

R Ashwin ended the India-Sri Lanka Test series with 12 wickets. With this, the 35-year-old wily-spinner's Test wicket-tally now reads 442, being the eighth-highest overall. Among Indians, he surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) and became the second-highest, only after former captain and coach Anil Kumble.

For the unversed, Kumble's tally is 619. He, thus, has a sizeable lead over Ashwin but Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels the off-spinner has it in him to break Kumble's tally. In a recent interaction, the former Indian opener explained why he feels Ashwin can do the unthinkable and go past Kumble's magical number.

"It's still a fair distance to go, we are talking about another 160 wickets. But he is capable of doing that because he just keeps getting better. He doesn't rest on his laurels," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Gavaskar further also highlighted how speedster Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin are exactly the same. At a time a year and year-and-half-ago, Ashwin was tyring leg-spin because you can as variety ball bowl that, especially if you have got 500 runs in the bank," he pointed out said.

Will R Ashwin go past Anil Kumble's Test wicket-tally? Sunil Gavaskar answers the big question

Senior India spinner R Ashwin scripted history during the recently-concluded Test series against Sri Lanka at home as he became the first bowler to reach the milestone of 100 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC). Ashwin achieved the feat during the second Test of the two-match series between the two sides at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Since the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship in 2019-2021, Ashwin has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers in the competition. R Ashwin scripts history, becomes first bowler to complete 100 wickets in World Test Championship

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Monday insisted that R Ashwin is indeed an all-time great in his eyes. Rohit had hailed Ashwin as one of the greats of the game after the senior spinner surpassed Kapil Dev to become India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali.

Ashwin has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers for India in the longest format over the years. He is among the best spinners in the world at present and continues to scale new milestones in his career. However, Rohit's comments for Ashwin after the first Test between India and Sri Lanka didn't go down well with many.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif even went on to claim that it might have been a 'slip of the tongue' for Rohit. However, the Indian skipper has put to rest all such claims and clarified that in his personal opinion, Ashwin is an all-time great in Test cricket.

Speaking at the press conference after the conclusion of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on Monday, Rohit said - "It was my personal opinion (that he is an all-time great). He puts in match-winning performances whenever we give him the ball. He still has a lot of life left in him. We have a lot of things to look forward to in the coming months. I need to make sure he's in a decent frame of mind."

Meanwhile, Ashwin continued his terrific run with the ball as India hammered Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the second Test in Bengaluru. The senior off-spinner picked up a total of six wickets across the two innings to go past Dale Styen to the 8th spot in the list of highest wicket-takers of all time in Test cricket.

'It was my personal opinion': Rohit Sharma on hailing Ravichandran Ashwin as an all-time great

R Ashwin created history during India's massive win over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali. During the course of the game, Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) to become the country's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, now only behind Anil Kumble (619).

With 436 wickets in 85 Tests, the 35-year-old Ashwin has played a huge role in India's dominance in whites, especially at home. Ahead of the second and final Test versus Sri Lanka, which will be a day-night encounter at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the wily offie shared the role of former Indian batter and women's team coach WV Raman in his growth as a cricketer.

In 2006, Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. Back then, Raman was the coach and the World Cup-winner recently spilled the beans on the former's role in his career in an interview posted by the BCCI.

“When I made my debut, I had walked into the Chepauk stadium and Raman was the coach. (He was) a hard taskmaster and a lot of people feared having conversations with him. So, we were going through this practice session one day and he was giving these fielding sessions. But the amount of pressure he used to inflict on people who were throwing the ball on the top of the stumps was incredible,” Ashwin recalled.

“If you didn't throw the ball at the top of the stumps, he would just have a go at you. This kept happening for 10 days, 12 days, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and we got a little comfortable. He used to prod me at the net, I used to question him and I didn't really have fear speaking in the team meeting," he further opined.

"One day, he just took me to the side and said, 'Ashwin, you've just come into the side. I appreciate you speaking in the team meetings, but you also need to understand why we say certain things. We say it with the intent to make sure that once you go to the Indian team, you are not found wanting with your basics'. And that really opened the floodgates for me and Raman forever. Because I knew this man had the best intent in place for anybody who walked into the ground inside this team,” added Ashwin.

Ashwin is currently gearing up for India's second and final Test versus Sri Lanka, starting on Saturday (March 12). The veteran will hope to continue his merry run in whites and lead India to a 2-0 series whitewash over the Asian neighbours.
