On Monday evening (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced two squads for India's upcoming three ODIs versus Australia at home, starting on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. In what will be India's last series before the commencement of CWC 2023, on October 05 in India, KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with Rohit Sharma to return for the series finale. However, R Ashwin's comeback has made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since early 2022, has rejoined the 50-over setup after a long gap. Many reports claimed&nbsp;that his inclusion was on the cards ever since Rohit hinted at his comeback post Asia Cup 2023 final, where India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in Colombo on Sunday (September 17), following Axar Patel's injury. For the Asia Cup final, India recalled Washington Sundar as a like-for-like replacement for Axar, but now the senior pro Ashwin has also been&nbsp;included. Meanwhile, Axar is&nbsp;part of the squad only for the third ODI, subject to fitness.

During a virtual press conference, Rohit opened up on Ashwin's ODI comeback so close to the World Cup. There are now strong possibilities of him making a late entry in the WC squad, especially if Axar&nbsp;remains unfit.&nbsp;

<h2>'It is&nbsp;all in the head more than the body'</h2>

Rohit told, "With guys like Ashwin, game-time and time on the ground is not so much of a concern. Which is why we thought if he is an option for us, we need to get him in. With the kind of experience he has, for guys like him, it's all in the head more than the body. I thought getting him in could give is a chance to understand where he is at, how his body is and stuff like that."

"It's not like he has not been playing cricket for the last year or so. Yes, he hasn't played in this [ODI] format, but he played Test cricket recently in the West Indies, and if I'm not wrong, in the TNPL as well. Of course, there's no comparison but he has had some cricket there. The games against Australia will give us a chance to look at where he's at," he added.

Meanwhile, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "We're hoping Axar will be fit. Washy was already part of the squad for the final. Ashwin brings experience, so it gives us options in case there is a need at some stage for us to look at those guys."

As reported by Cricbuzz, Ashwin&nbsp;is scheduled to play a 50-over match in Chennai on Tuesday (September 19),&nbsp;in the local league of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Thus, the 37-year-old spinner is sincerely preparing himself for&nbsp;any potential scenarios ahead of CWC&nbsp;'23&nbsp;in India.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

For third and final ODI vs Australia:&nbsp;Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya, (Vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel*, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj.

Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya have also been rested for the first two ODIs, along with Rohit, but will return for the final game.

The Australia ODIs kick&nbsp;off in Mohali on Friday, followed by the second and penultimate tie in Indore on&nbsp;September 24 (Sunday)&nbsp;and the series finale on September 27 (Wednesday).&nbsp;

'Game-time not a concern': Rohit Sharma on R Ashwin's ODI return in Australia series ahead of CWC '23

India's Test specialist R Ashwin has lauded KL Rahul and feels the right-hander is providing stability with the bat in the middle-order. Rahul made his return to international cricket after a long injury layoff, since early May, during the Super Four round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition and has had scores of 111* and 39, versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively. Thus, Ashwin feels Rahul is 'slowly mastering his role perfectly' of batting in the middle order.

<h2>'MS Dhoni nailed that art. KL Rahul is slowly mastering his role perfectly'</h2>

"KL Rahul is giving us that stability with the bat in the middle-order," Ashwin was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. "That’s why batting in the middle order is really difficult. MS Dhoni nailed that art. However, I am not at all comparing KL Rahul with MS Dhoni. Plus, he did a different role of batting at number 6/7 compared to KL Rahul," he opined.

Ashwin added, "But I feel he is slowly mastering his role perfectly. He put a partnership with Ishan Kishan initially against Sri Lanka too. When Dunith Wellalage was in a great rhythm, KL Rahul left it alone for two deliveries. That was a very good sign. It showed us that he had a good game plan."

Rahul missed the group stage of the Asia Cup and was drafted into the playing XI at the last minute during the India-Pakistan Super Four stage after Shreyas Iyer's back issues. He returned in style,&nbsp;slamming a brilliant 111 not out whereas also looked most comfortable during India's spin struggles versus the Islanders. He ended with a sublime 39 and was sharp behind the stumps with his movements and valuable inputs to the bowlers.&nbsp;

India are taking on Bangladesh in their last Super Four clash on Friday (September 15) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo before locking horns with hosts Sri Lanka in the final, on Sunday (September 17), at the same venue.

Asia Cup: KL Rahul is giving India stability in the middle-order, says veteran spinner R Ashwin

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Ishan Kishan and hailed his versatility after the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was named in India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kishan pipped Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to be included in the provisional squad along with keeper-batter KL Rahul. The young batter has been in solid form in the 50-over format with four successive half-centuries and confirmed his WC spot following a fine 82 versus Pakistan in India's Asia Cup 2023 opener, on September 02.&nbsp;

Speaking on Kishan, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "This is not a competition between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, because Kishan fills so many roles. When you pick a 15-member squad, you need to pick a backup wicket-keeper. Even when we pick a Ranji Trophy squad, we pick two wicket-keepers."

The 36-year-old Ashwin further highlighted that Kishan can bat anywhere and being a left-hander, he will add more variety to the line-up. It is to be noted that India have two left-handers in the form of Kishan and Ravindra Jadeja among their main&nbsp;batters --&nbsp;Kuldeep Yadav is also a left-hander down the order -- going into the mega event.&nbsp;

“Ishan Kishan is also a back-up opener along with being a back-up wicket-keeper, he is two-in-one player. Now that Ishan Kishan has succeeded at Number 5, it gives India two left-handers in the middle order. Everyone was going gaga over left-handers and they were saying Ishan Kishan cannot bat at No.5, but he has delivered now,” Ashwin added.

At present, Kishan-starrer India is gearing up for their first game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will face Pakistan on September 10, in Colombo, and aim for a win to progress further. It will be interesting to see if India field both Rahul -- who is now fit and joined the squad in Sri Lanka -- and Kishan in the playing XI.&nbsp;

After the Asia Cup, India will host Australia in three ODIs before playing their WC opener versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co. on October 08 in Chennai. The World Cup kicks off in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand on October 05.

India's squad for CWC 2023:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav

He's a two-in-one player: Ashwin lauds Kishan's versatility after batter included in India's CWC '23 squad

Pakistan have posted a mammoth 342 for 6 after opting to bat first versus Nepal in the opening game of the Asia Cup in Multan, Pakistan on Wednesday (August 30). The No. 1 ranked ODI side were challenged with Nepal striking early before Babar Azam (151) and Mohammed Rizwan got together, for the fourth wicket, whereas the skipper carried on from his end and was well supported by another centurion Iftikhar Ahmed (unbeaten on 109). However, it was Rizwan's mode of dismissal which remained a hot topic of debate.

It was the 23rd over of the Pakistani innings when Rizwan got run-out for a 50-ball 44.&nbsp;The right-hander hit a four off Nepal Lamichhane's previous delivery and went for a quick single, on the off-side, in the following ball. Nepal&nbsp;fielder, Dipendra Singh Airee swiftly collected the ball, stationed at covers, and a direct hit costed Rizwan's fall.&nbsp;What made heads turn was that Rizwan fumbled and he did not ground his bat whereas the veteran chose to jump, in a bid to avoid being hit by the throw. Since then, he has been&nbsp;trolled on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.&nbsp;Here are some of the reactions:

India's veteran off-spinner R Ashwin, who remains active on various aspects of the gentlemen's game on social media, also tweeted saying, "The height of the throw made it harder to evade for Rizwan but for someone who generally dives to make his ground all the time while running between the wickets, this is a rare instance of him ducking for cover and the only reason is that he isn’t wearing his helmet. He loves sweeping against spin and no helmet makes it even more bizarre."

Rizwan will be eager to move past his dismissal and make the most of his chances in the remaining games in the continental tournament. For Pakistan, they have given a momentous target to lowly-ranked Nepal. It will be interesting to see if the latter manages to challenge the home side, comprising a formidable bowling attack.

The Men in Green will next lock horns with India on September 02, in Pallekele, Kandy, as the three sides are placed in Group A. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group B. It was the 23rd over of the Pakistani innings when Rizwan got run-out for a 50-ball 44. The right-hander hit a four off Nepal Lamichhane's previous delivery and went for a quick single, on the off-side, in the following ball. Nepal fielder, Dipendra Singh Airee swiftly collected the ball, stationed at covers, and a direct hit costed Rizwan's fall. What made heads turn was that Rizwan fumbled and he did not ground his bat whereas the veteran chose to jump, in a bid to avoid being hit by the throw. Since then, he has been trolled on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Asia Cup: Wait, what? Md Rizwan's BRAINFADE moment makes heads turn during Pakistan-Nepal opener

India's middle-order woes know no end. In the run-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team auditioned several batters to take up the No. 4 slot. While Ambati Rayudu looked confirmed for the slot, Vijay Shankar got the nod ahead of the former. In the World Cup, India struggled to fix the&nbsp;No. 4 position, but&nbsp;Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries added to their woes,&nbsp;and the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals of the mega event. Post the 50-over ICC event, India had almost finalised Shreyas Iyer for the No. 4 slot whereas KL Rahul raised his stocks at No. 5, but injuries to the duo didn't solve Rohit Sharma-led India's problems.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors announced a strong 17-man India squad for the continental tournament which includes both Rahul and Iyer. Both the batters have been deemed fit, although Rahul is carrying a niggle, and the two will get much-needed game time as India gear up for the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup at home. Before the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, India's veteran spinner R Ashwin&nbsp;lauded Rahul and feels he has filled the No. 5 slot with expertise ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired. During their playing days, Yuvi and Dhoni formed a lethal batting pair, often handling the No. 4 and 5 spot respectively, and bailed India out of crisis several times.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No. 5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman."

According to Ashwin, Iyer and Rahul will take up the No. 4 and 5 spot, respectively, if fit, for the upcoming two mega events (Asia Cup and ODI WC). Both have proven their worth batting in the middle order with the best numbers since the 2019 ODI WC, but will be eager to get some match practice and runs under their belt in the upcoming month before the 50-over World Cup kicks off.&nbsp;

Ever since Yuvraj and Dhoni retired, he has filled that slot: Ashwin heaps praise on Rahul ahead of Asia Cup

Indian captain Rohit Sharma explained the reason for overlooking Yuvzendra Chahal as the BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced a strong 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad comprises Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav as the spinners but Chahal found no place. Thus, Hitman pointed out the reason behind the 33-year-old's omission and stated that 'World Cup door is not closed on anyone'.

Speaking to the reporters after India's squad got announced, Rohit said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

<h2>'Only way we could have got&nbsp;him in&nbsp;was&nbsp;by taking one of the seamers out'</h2>

The 36-year-old Indian skipper further added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal has been behind in the pecking order in the 50-over format. His last ODI came versus New Zealand during the home series early this year. He wasn't part of the playing XI in the following home series versus Australia and even missed out during the Windies tour. The veteran will still be hopeful for a miraculous turnaround before the ODI World Cup squad is announced.&nbsp;

Chahal has so far claimed 121 wickets in 72 ODIs and was part of India's run in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where they bowed out in the semi-finals.&nbsp;

'Only way we could have...': Rohit on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, says 'World Cup door not closed on anyone'

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) after an eight-wicket loss in the series finale. Opting to bat first, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 45-ball 61 to post 165 for 9. In reply, Rovman Powell &amp; Co. rode on opener Brandan King's 85 not out, Nicholas Pooran's 35-ball 47 and Shai Hope's 13-ball 22* to chase down the score in 18 overs. With this defeat, India conceded their first-ever T20I series. The Windies, on the other hand, gained their maiden bilateral series win over India, with a minimum of three games, since their 4-1 ODI series win at home in 2006.

A lot of fingers were raised on the Indian team management following HardiK &amp; Co.'s series loss. The Men in Blue conceded a 2-0 lead to the hosts before bouncing back and levelling the series at 2-2. However, they were outplayed in the final game as the series defeat exposed India's lack of batting depth and raised questions on Hardik's captaincy. Amid criticism from all corners, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has come out in support of the T20I line-up.

<h2>'Easy to criticise the team on social media'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "There are plenty of positives from this T20I series. It is very easy to criticise the team on social media since they lost to a team that didn't qualify for the last T20 World Cup. They haven't qualified for the upcoming 50-over World Cup as well. I want to give a piece of information to you guys."

<h2>'They will definitely get better'</h2>

Ashwin further pointed out, "I am not talking, backing, or supporting anybody. All of these are secondary. As a youngster, if you are going to the West Indies, there will be some challenges. In all countries, there will be some innate secrets. The local players know these things more than visiting players. Especially if the players are young. When I went to West Indies, England, Australia, I had to learn various little things...these are first-time experience for me as a cricketer. So, youngsters would have learned a lot from this tour. They will definitely get better form here."

"Losing the the series 3-2 to West Indies...many of them are criticising and upset. It's okay and understandable. It's only fair, I guess. But we can see this loss from two perspectives. The players will get experience from this series," the 36-year-old concluded.

A second-stringed Indian team, under Jasprit Bumrah, have now left for Ireland where they will play three T20Is before the focus shifts entirely on the ODI format with the Asia Cup 2023, starting on August 30, and home ODI World Cup (in October-November) in the pipeline.

It is very easy to criticise on social media: R Ashwin defends Hardik Pandya-led India after WI T20Is loss

India lost the&nbsp;last match of the five-match T20I series&nbsp;against West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) and conceded the series 2-3. This was India's first-ever bilateral series loss to the Windies, one comprising&nbsp;a minimum of three games, since their 1-4 loss in 2006 during the five ODIs in the Caribbean island. After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth as they batted only till No. 7.

After the final T20I, Dravid said, "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

While Dravid's concerns were regarding the current T20I team, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin reacted to it and came up with an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma-led Team India ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

<h2>'You need someone like Shardul Thakur at No. 8'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "You don't want your tail to start so early, and that's why you need someone like Shardul Thakur to come and smash a few balls at No. 8. But you should play your best batters and bowlers to win a match. At the same time, if you needed 36 to win from 30 balls when you are six down, you should have the ability to close down such games as well. So, that is the conundrum that India will go into ahead of the World Cup. If they play Kuldeep and Chahal together, then it gets to a situation where Kuldeep has to bat at No. 8."

At present, India's ODI setup is eagerly waiting to know the fitness status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two of their prominent middle-order batters, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI WC at home. Currently, India have injury concerns with regard to the middle and lower order whereas they will also aim for more batting depth in the upcoming ICC event.

After the Windies tour, India is now gearing for three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, before the focus shifts to the 50-over Asia Cup, starting on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC.

It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Ashwin reacts after Dravid shows concern for India's batting depth, shares suggestion for CWC '23

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up.&nbsp;

Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;

<h2>MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION</h2>

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

<h2>WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES</h2>

Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and&nbsp;also be a handy part-time bowler). Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).

During the WI T20Is, Surya admitted to his 50-over woes and said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears." He added, "If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."

Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough&nbsp;to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni&nbsp;said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games."

Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;

Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. However, India can always promote Ravindra Jadeja -- whose batting stokes are on the rise since 2018 -- in the 50-over showpiece event and, thus, not change their team combination drastically. Moreover, they also have Kishan who can bat at No. 4. Nonetheless, bringing Varma out of nowhere can jolt India's preparations. They have a rich pool of players but with the CWC '23 less than 60 days away, they cannot keep expanding their options. They have to shortlist a few and identify their No. 4 if Iyer, or even Rahul, continue to miss out due to injury concerns.

Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed&nbsp;India's&nbsp;struggle to book their No. 4 slot. He said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good. Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period."

"That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined.

There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019.

Explained | Why it is too late to consider Tilak Varma for India's No. 4 spot for CWC '23

Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Rohit Sharma-led India is the most balanced side at home. Hussain feels the Indian team outperforms every visiting line-up in the purest format of the game due to their perfect blend of youth and experience while playing in home conditions. It is to be noted that the Indian team has not lost a Test series on home soil since late 2012, when they lost 1-2 to England in four Tests.

<h2>'The balance of their side at home is just wonderful'</h2>

Speaking on the ICC Review, Hussain said, "They are brilliant at home...and the balance of their side at home is just wonderful. They've got senior players like Rohit and obviously Virat (Kohli) and they are just world class players and they've got youngsters coming in, like Shubman (Gill), who's going to be a superstar."

Hussain further opined that the Indian team will become a more formidable unit once Jasprit Bumrah achieves full fitness. The wily Indian speedster has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. He is set to make his much-awaited national comeback during India's three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, later this month.

In this regard, Hussain concluded, "If Jasprit (Bumrah) can come back as well, one of the great multi-format bowlers there is at the moment, if not the best, when fit. So, they've got those senior players and youngsters, and with the ball in India, those three all-rounders, and they are genuine all rounders in India - Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. That, for me, is a really balanced side because then you've got a No.7."

At present, India hold the No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings. They featured in the WTC final in both the cycles, since its inception in late 2019, but failed to lift the coveted Test mace, having lost the summit clash to New Zealand and Australia, respectively.

Currently, India are preparing hard for the forthcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November. Their next Test assignment will be post the ODI WC, i.e. a two-match Test series versus hosts South Africa in December.

India most balanced Test side at home: Former England captain Nasser Hussain lauds Rohit Sharma & Co.

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin feels India are preparing Sanju Samson as a backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who are closing in on full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue raised a lot of eyebrows for their constant experiments in the recent ODIs versus hosts West Indies.&nbsp;They shuffled their batting order and also rested the likes of regular skipper Rohit and Virat Kohli. With Rahul and Iyer's return still not confirmed, they even tried Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the middle. Thus, Ashwin commented on the batting experiments and feels India are preparing backups until Rahul and Iyer return.&nbsp;

<h2>'They are keeping different strategies...'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "Both (KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer) of them are coming out of injuries. I think they will return during the Asia Cup only. But who is the backup for either of them? If one of them is unable to return before the World Cup, and that's why they have tried out Sanju Samson. They also tried Axar Patel at No. 4. I think they are keeping different strategies for T20 and ODI formats."

Talking about Samson, the right-hander failed to get going in the rain-hit second and penultimate ODI but slammed an impressive 41-ball 51 in the series decider, where Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. won by 200 runs. However, Samson is yet to get going in the ongoing five T20Is.

Ashwin further commented on Tilak Verma, who made his India debut during the ongoing T20Is, in the Caribbean island. While India have lost two games on the trot, Tilak has been India's standout performer with the bat with scores of 39 (21) and 51 (41). On the Mumbai Indians' (MI) star batter, the 36-year-old Ashwin stated,&nbsp;"The emergence of Tilka Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in the first T20I. His batting style looked very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot of Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull."

He added, "Generally, Indian batters won't set up to play the pull shot. They will find the answer later as they will have all the other shots. Pull shot is something they will develop. But his game looks like has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the boundary rope like an Australian."

Talking about India's preparations for the forthcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, in October-November, they are trying different combinations and giving varied roles to the available players whereas Rahul and Iyer are working hard to get fully fit and stage a comeback.&nbsp;

India preparing Sanju Samson as backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for ODI World Cup, opines R Ashwin

India recently won the three-match ODI series versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, 2-1. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue won the series opener, by five wickets, but they played a second-stringed side, with Rohit and Virat Kohli being rested, to lose the second and penultimate tie by six wickets. Despite the defeat, and heavy criticism for playing a second-stringed line-up, India again rested Rohit and Kohli and entered the third ODI with the series on the line.

However, the Hardik Pandya-led side came to their best in the finale and posted a mammoth 351/5. In reply, Shai Hope-led West Indies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs and lost&nbsp;by 200 runs in Trinidad, on Tuesday (August 01). Despite the series triumph, many critics slammed the Dravid-led Indian team management for not playing their regulars in the three ODIs with the 50-over World Cup only a few months away, to be held in India in October-November.&nbsp;

<h2>'Seriously don’t understand why this outrage'</h2>

Now, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has schooled Rohit-Dravid's critics. "India lost the second ODI, and immediately the trend in social media was - why so-and-so players played and why so-and-so players did not play. I seriously don’t understand why this outrage. Rohit and Virat didn’t play in the second ODI. Even in the first match, Rohit batted lower down the order. So the debate was around whether Rohit and Virat should have played," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

<h2>'The reason why we are favourites for ODI World Cup is the IPL'</h2>

Ashwin further pointed out, “Some of them were perplexed at how we lost to a team that didn’t even qualify for the World Cup. Many people think that India’s only job in international cricket is to win World Cup. The main reason why we consider ourselves favourites to win the World Cup is because of the IPL. ODI matches are very stressful. It will take at least two days for your body to recover. The first two matches in West Indies were played in a gap of 24 hours. Thus, there are more chances of you getting injured. Already we have so many players recovering at the NCA. Bumrah is back after a long hiatus. Prasidh Krishna is back too. So, we have so many injury problems. It seems like people are finding points to blame Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma just for the sake of it."

The 36-year-old Test specialist added,&nbsp;"They are trying different players now because they know what they went through during the last T20 World Cup. We didn’t have Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah, and we didn’t have many fast bowlers. That’s why we are trying different options before the ODI World Cup."

At present, the Hardik Pandya-led Indian T20I team is set to lock horns with West Indies in the five-match series opener on Thursday (August 03) in Trinidad. After the West Indies tour, Rohit-Dravid-led Indian team will gear up for the Asia Cup, in the ODI format, which will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the home WC. They will hope for the likes of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to be deemed fit sooner than later, with Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna set to comeback in next month's Ireland T20Is, to strengthen their line-up before the ODI showpiece event later this year.

However, the Hardik Pandya-led side came to their best in the finale and posted a mammoth 351/5. In reply, Shai Hope-led West Indies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs and lost by 200 runs in Trinidad, on Tuesday (August 01). Despite the series triumph, many critics slammed the Dravid-led Indian team management for not playing their regulars in the three ODIs with the 50-over World Cup only a few months away, to be held in India in October-November. 'Seriously don’t understand why this outrage' Now, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has schooled Rohit-Dravid's critics. "India lost the second ODI, and immediately the trend in social media was - why so-and-so players played and why so-and-so players did not play. I seriously don’t understand why this outrage. Rohit and Virat didn’t play in the second ODI. Even in the first match, Rohit batted lower down the order. 'Many think India's only job is to win WCs': Ashwin schools Rohit-Dravid's critics, backs team experiments

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels India's biggest regret will be not playing R Ashwin in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Karthik made the big claim while reflecting on Pat Cummins-led Australia's playing XI in the fifth and final Ashes Test, which got underway on Thursday (July 27) at The Oval, London. India faced Australia in the second WTC final, which was also held at the same ground in&nbsp;London, and lost the match by 209 runs to lose the coveted Test mace.

Karthik opined on Australia's XI, who included Todd Murphy after dropping him for the fourth Test. Backing the decision, he told Sky Sports, "Todd Murphy is coming in. We know the pitch is dry.&nbsp;Nathan&nbsp;Lyon has done well at the Oval over a period of time. So the obvious change."

<h2>'You are unearthing a cab wound'</h2>

The 38-year-old then recalled India's decision to drop ace spinner Ashwin, who is also the No. 1 ranked Test bowler, during the WTC final in early June. "But India left R Ashwin as well, didn't they? In the World Test championship final. And that possibly cost them because this pitch is dry. You are unearthing a cab wound there. I think we should let that go. But yes, I think they do when they look back at it. That is one of the biggest regrets they could have," he added.

In reply, India only managed 296 and gave a healthy 173-run lead before Pat Cummins &amp; Co. set up a challenging 444-run target for the Asian giants.

In their run-chase, India fell for a modest 234 on the final day to lose by a big margin. This became India's second straight defeat in the WTC final.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Australia are now focused on winning their first Ashes series in England since 2001 in the ongoing edition having entered the final Test with an unassailable 2-1 lead. They will look to replicate their performance from the WTC final to register another historic win at The Oval and end their tour of the United Kingdom on a high.&nbsp;

Leaving R Ashwin out of WTC Final will remain India's biggest regret, says veteran keeper Dinesh Karthik

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been a highly successful bowling pair for India in the purest format of the game. They have given sleepless nights to every Test team touring India whereas the duo have also enjoyed bowling in the subcontinent and&nbsp;had some success overseas (especially in the Caribbean island). On Day Four of the second and final Test in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, Ashwin and Jadeja achieved a massive feat by becoming only the second Indian pair to have 500, or more, wickets.&nbsp;

Ashwin and Jadeja got to the feat during the final session on Day Four, on Sunday (July 23), when the former claimed two breakthroughs in West Indies' stiff 365-run chase in the series decider. Thus, Ashwin and Jadeja joined Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the 500-wicket club as a pair.&nbsp;

The two will be eager to play a dominating role on the final day's play on Monday (July 24) when West Indies will resume their innings at 76 for 2, in pursuit of 365. Talking about Day Four, India rode on Mohammed Siraj's 5 for 60 to dismiss the hosts for 255 after India's 438. In their second essay, India was at their attacking best to declare at 181 for 2 in 24&nbsp;overs to give a challenging target to the home side.

India lead the series 1-0 and will push for a clean sweep on the final day. For that to happen, Ashwin-Jadeja will have to be at their usual best.

IND vs WI: R Ashwin-Ravindra Jadeja join Anil Kumble-Harbhajan Singh in ELITE list during series finale

R Ashwin was not part of India's XI in their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final versus Australia, held last month at The Oval, London. India lost the game by 209 runs and many raised fingers at Rohit Sharma-led team management for overlooking the veteran off-spinner. Ahead of India's first game in the 2023-25 WTC cycle, Ashwin gave an interview, where he opened up on his WTC final snub, equation with his teammates, etc.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ashwin opened up on the team environment and reflected on his equation with the Team India members. In this regard, he pointed out, "This is an era where everybody is a colleague. Once upon a time when cricket was played, all your teammates were friends. Now, they’re colleagues. There’s a big difference because here people are there to advance themselves and to stride ahead of another person sitting to your right or left. So nobody’s got the time to say, ‘okay, boss what are you up to’?"

<h2>'There aren't much friendships, it isn't like family'</h2>

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his take on Ashwin's claims, which have made heads turn in the cricketing fraternity. He recalled the highly successful Australian team of the late 1990s and early 2000s and claimed even they didn't like each other, but became a different unit once they stepped inside the 22-yard cricket strip.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "They (Australian team members) didn't really like each other as much, which is ok. But as soon as they crossed the boundary, there were unstoppable. It was almost impossible to stop them. A star-studded team that played for each other. It wasn't as if Ian Healy refused to catch on Shane Warne's delivery, or someone missed a run-out chance because they didn't like the other. Everybody was trying their best to make Australia win. And it isn't just one example, it happens with a lot of teams."

He added, “There aren't many friendships, it isn't like family. There's cut-throat competition but teams are successful. It isn't mandatory that teams will be successful with only a family-like atmosphere. Your teammates don't have to care a lot about your position in the team.”

Talking about Ashwin, the 36-year-old is currently involved in India's two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. The veteran spinner ended with a 12-wicket haul in the opening Test, which India won by an innings and 141 runs, and is now gearing up for the second and final match in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad starting on Thursday (July 20).

'Australian players didn't like each other much...': Ex-India opener on R Ashwin's 'dressing room' remark

Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica on July 14. With this win, former Indian captain Virat Kohli surpassed ex-skipper MS Dhoni in an elite list. It was the 296th time when Kohli ended on the winning side for Team India, overtaking Dhoni (295) and has now closed the gap with Sachin Tendulkar (307).

Tendulkar, who represented India from 1989-2013, played 200 Tests, 463 ODIs and a solitary T20I. During his illustrious career, he was involved in 307 wins with the national side. Dhoni, with over 500 internationals, comes second and Kohli features in the third spot in the elite list. He is now 12 wins away from overtaking the Master Blaster and achieving the top spot.&nbsp;

WI vs IND: Virat Kohli closes gap with Sachin Tendulkar in elite list after surpassing MS Dhoni in Dominica

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Tuesday (June 27), released the full schedule for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Rohit Sharma-led India will open their campaign on October 08, in Chennai, as they face Australia, whereas defending champions England will open their tournament by locking horns with last edition's runners-up New Zealand on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, the much-awaited India-Pakistan clash is set to take place on October 15 in Ahmedabad.

The last time both sides faced each other in an ICC event&nbsp;was during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Back then, Rohit &amp; Co. emerged on top on the last ball by four wickets in a chase of 160 at the MCG, Melbourne. Opting to bowl first, India rode on Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya's three-for each to restrict Pakistan at 159 for 8. In reply, India were on the back foot and reduced to 31 for 4 before Virat Kohli's masterclass (82 not out) and Hardik Pandya's 40 (37) to chase down the target on the last delivery of the contest.

With two needed off the last two balls, India lost Dinesh Karthik as R Ashwin joined Kohli in the middle. A wide from off-spinner Mohammed Nawaz led to scores being levelled before Ashwin punched one down the ground,&nbsp;over mid-off, for a four as India won on the last ball of the contest. Recently, the 36-year-old Ashwin recalled India's famous win over arch-rivals Pakistan&nbsp;and shared what advice he got from Kohli and how he won the game for his side.

<h2>'The moment Md Nawaz bowled a wide I knew I had won the contest'</h2>

Speaking to ICC, Ashwin said, "Virat just gave me like seven options to play off that one ball. If only I was that capable of playing all those shots I wouldn't be batting at no. 8. I just talked to myself, I couldn't say that to him. I looked at Virat and his eyes seemed like he was possessed. I said, okay he's on another planet and let me come back to earth. The moment he bowled a wide I knew I had won the contest."

"I think cricket in so many ways is going to give you a lot of messages that way. So that's where I brought my positivity from. I knew I'd won the game," stated Ashwin.

Recalling his winning shot, the off-spinner added, "I think about it every night when I go to sleep. To be honest, what happens&nbsp;every time I see a video on social media, I think about it, what if the ball had just gripped and hit my pad? It was pretty close for comfort. I just felt that the game was meant to be finished by me. That's how I felt honestly. Terrific innings by Virat and one of the better games I've watched and been a part of."

The last time both sides faced each other in an ICC event was during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Back then, Rohit & Co. emerged on top on the last ball by four wickets in a chase of 160 at the MCG, Melbourne. A wide from off-spinner Mohammed Nawaz led to scores being levelled before Ashwin punched one down the ground, over mid-off, for a four as India won on the last ball of the contest. Virat Kohli seemed possessed: R Ashwin recalls India's last-over win vs Pakistan in 2022 T20 WC

R Ashwin's omission from India's playing XI for the recently-held WTC final versus Australia created a huge stir on social media platforms and within the cricketing fraternity. As a result, India finished second by a huge margin, losing the coveted Test mace to Australia by 209 runs at The Oval, London.&nbsp;

With India missing out on winning yet another ICC title, since 2013, fans showed their frustration on the Indian players and called for the omission of some senior members. Recently, Ashwin reacted to Indian fans' outbursts while mentioning about MS Dhoni's leadership and the success India achieved under him.

On his Youtube channel, Ashwin began by congratulating Australia and said,&nbsp;"Congratulations Australia! It was a fantastic final and they completely deserve the win. There was a small advantage although as few players like Marnus Labuschagne played a couple of matches in county cricket. That was a small one because in a one-Test shootout you can't really say who will do what, but they thoroughly deserved it. Even in the last WTC cycle, they missed qualifying for the finals only by a whisker. They have been a consistent Test team like India."

<h2>'Under MS Dhoni,&nbsp;same squad of 15 and the XI will play throughput the year'</h2>

The veteran off-spinner highlighted Dhoni's significance as a leader and mentioned an important aspect. “It is understandable that there's a furore in India that we haven't won an ICC trophy in 10 years. I empathise with the fans. But the reaction on social media is that this player should be dropped and that player should be included. But quality of a player doesn't change overnight. Lot of us talk about MS Dhoni's leadership. What did he do? Ge kept it very simple. Under his regime, where I also played, he will pick a squad of 15. The same squad of 15 and the XI will play throughput the year. That sense of security is very important for a player,” Ashwin pointed out.

Under Dhoni, India won all ICC titles along with winning the Test mace.

This is not the first time when Ashwin emphasised&nbsp;on the need for sense of security among players within the dressing room. In&nbsp;an interaction with Indian Express, the 36-year-old Ashwin stated,&nbsp;"A lot of people marketed me and positioned me that I am an overthinker. A person who will get 15-20 matches on the go doesn’t have to be mentally overthinking. A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatised and will be overthinking because it’s my job. It’s my journey. So this is what suits me. If somebody is going to tell me, ‘you’re going to play 15 matches, you will be looked after, you will be this, you are responsible for players, you are in the leadership role, I won’t be overthinking. Why would I?"

Ashwin will now gear up for India's two-match Test series versus hosts West Indies, which will kick off Rohit &amp; Co.'s run in WTC 2023-25 cycle, starting on July 12.

R Ashwin credits MS Dhoni for creating 'sense of security' in Team India after WTC final snub

Rohit Sharma-led India had a chance to end their ten-year-long ICC title drought when they faced Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, London early this month. However, India fell flat and lost the game by a whopping 209-run margin with many questioning the performances of their top players and omission of No. 1 ranked Test bowler R Ashwin. Soon after India's defeat, Ashwin took to his official Twitter handle to share a post on the loss.

Ashwin wrote, "Congratulations Australia on winning this #WTCFinal and closing out this cycle of test cricket. It is disappointing to end up on the wrong side of things, nevertheless it was a great effort over the last 2 years or so to get here in the first place. Amidst all the chaos and scathing assessments, I&nbsp;feel it’s very important to acknowledge all my team mates who played in this cycle and most importantly the coaching and support staffs who have held on like a rock of support."

Recently, in a conversation with the Indian Express, the 36-year-old Ashwin reflected on his tweet. The veteran offie&nbsp;explained that the post was an act to get closure for him to move past the heartbreaking episode. In addition, he opened up on the stress it put on his family, especially his ailing father.

<h2>'The moment I get the closure I can move on'</h2>

Ashwin said, "The moment, the final finished I put out a tweet because I realised one thing is that I need closure. The moment I get the closure I can move on. There is no time to hang around. I have understood life a lot better now.

The more I see it, the kind of trauma toll it takes on my family is incredible. My father has a heart problem and other issues. Every single game, every single day, something happens, he will call me. He is stressed. It’s very easy for me to go out and play because it is still in my control. For my father, it is not and he goes through double of what I do. So looking at this in hindsight, everybody on the outside is irrelevant."

Ashwin opined on his non-selection and added, "I have got no sympathy for my journey. It’s very easy for me to go back and say, okay, this didn’t happen for me or something happened for him. I don’t give myself one second of sympathy. That’s why I put that tweet because I wanted closure. I hated the fact that people are giving me sympathy, I just couldn’t take it anymore."

In this social media age, you don’t play and sometimes you are bigger than if you had played the game, right? People are talking, ‘if he had played we would have won’. I am not sure if I had played, we would have won. I would have given my best and I definitely think I gave myself the best opportunity to succeed there. I also think I earned my stripes. That’s all I can do. But the moment it got done, I just wanted to move on and focus on the TNPL for Dindigul Dragons."

Ashwin, with 474 Test scalps, will now shift his focus on India's 2023-25 WTC cycle which commences with a two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island from next month.

'I need closure': R Ashwin reflects on his tweet after India's big loss in WTC final vs Australia

Despite being the No. 1 Test bowler, R Ashwin was not part of Rohit Sharma-led India's playing XI in their recent loss in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final versus Australia at The Oval, London early this month. His exclusion shocked many to the core as India lost to the Aussies by 209 runs,&nbsp;missing&nbsp;another opportunity to win an ICC title since 2013.

Over the years, Ashwin has maintained his dominance in Tests in home conditions, whereas he has also played a crucial part in the team's success overseas, especially since 2018. Nonetheless, he remains second after Ravindra Jadeja as the spin-bowling all-rounder when India tour&nbsp;out of the subcontinent (i.e. in SENA countries). Recently, Ashwin opened up about not getting enough opportunities while playing overseas. In addition, he&nbsp;made a big claim about being denied Test captaincy.

<h2>'A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatised'</h2>

In an exclusive interaction with Indian Express, Ashwin&nbsp;said: "A lot of people marketed me and positioned me that I am an overthinker. A person who will get 15-20 matches on the go doesn’t have to be mentally overthinking. A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatised and will be overthinking because it’s my job. It’s my journey. So this is what suits me. Why would I?"

"It’s unfair to actually say somebody’s an overthinker because that person’s journey is his own. And nobody has a right or business to do that."

<h2>'If I earned it, it’s got to be there'</h2>

Further, the 36-year-old Ashwin opened up on being denied Test captaincy despite being a great reader of the game.&nbsp;"It (overthinking tag) was created to work against me, right? And as I said, there have been statements that people have made all along when leadership question has come my way, there have been people who are been out there telling, my name is not the first name on the sheet when India tour abroad."

"Whether that name is first on the sheet or not is something I can’t control. If I earned it, it’s got to be there and that’s my belief. As I said, I have no complaints, I have no time to sit back and throw punches or regret or anything. I have no regrets about anyone," he added.

The sad reality is that Ashwin has never even been named as the vice-captain in whites, although he remains a crucial part of the leadership group.

Ashwin came back to India after the WTC final and is leading the Dindigul Dragons in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2023 edition. He will gear up to lead the spin department when India travel to the West Indies for two Tests next month. The tour will also comprise three ODIs and five T20Is.

R Ashwin opens up on being denied India Test captaincy after WTC final snub

India are set to take on Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final, which kicks off on Wednesday (June 07) at The Oval, London. While Virat Kohli-led India dominated the inaugural WTC cycle and entered the final, they lost to New Zealand by eight wickets in the summit clash. Thus, Rohit Sharma's India will be eager to get past the finish line in the second cycle.

Ahead of facing Pat Cummins-led Australia, who are one spot below No. 1 ranked India,&nbsp;veteran off-spinner R Ashwin revealed that head coach Rahul Dravid's speech after India's three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the Dhaka Test, in late 2022, will be the highlight for him in this current WTC cycle. Unlike the first cycle, India did not dominate to reach the final but was made to work hard. They had to whitewash hosts Bangladesh in a two-match series, held last December but were staring at defeat in the final Test.

Dismissing Bangladesh for 227 in the first essay, KL Rahul &amp; Co. made 314 and then bundled out the Bangla Tigers for 231. In pursuit of 145, India was 74 for 7 before Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) and R Ashwin's (42*) unbeaten 71-run eighth-wicket stand took India to a 2-0 victory. Ashwin recalled Dravid's speech after the win and told the ICC, "We’ve had our moments in this last cycle, especially where we could have been knocked out quite a few times and have just held tight. I think the moment of the WTC, I don’t know irrespective of what happens in this game, would be Rahul (Dravid) bhai’s speech after the Bangladesh Test that we had at Mirpur."

<h2>'I think WTC final&nbsp;could be lucky number two for us'</h2>

He opined, "I think we were just going to be knocked out of the WTC race in that particular Test, so we finished the game and I came out and was really pumped up, I don’t think we expected... nobody expected us to win, even inside the dressing room. Rahul just said, ‘It was a great game of cricket and Ash, we were never in doubt’. That is probably the moment of the WTC cycle as far as I’m concerned.

“Like he (Dravid) said, we were never in doubt, even though we went through the ride. I think in the last cycle we really quite dominated and got into the Final. This time we’ve had our ups and downs, and that’s probably why I think this particular game could be lucky number two for us," Ashwin concluded.

1 ranked India, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin revealed that head coach Rahul Dravid's speech after India's three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the Dhaka Test, in late 2022, will be the highlight for him in this current WTC cycle. Unlike the first cycle, India did not dominate to reach the final but was made to work hard. They had to whitewash hosts Bangladesh in a two-match series, held last December but were staring at defeat in the final Test. Dismissing Bangladesh for 227 in the first essay, KL Rahul & Co. made 314 and then bundled out the Bangla Tigers for 231. I think the moment of the WTC, I don’t know irrespective of what happens in this game, would be Rahul (Dravid) bhai’s speech after the Bangladesh Test that we had at Mirpur." Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023: A dismal end to a robust start

In match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosted last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Asked to bat first, Sanju Samson's RR posted 175-8. CSK eventually managed 172-6 but skipper MS Dhoni (17-ball 32*) and Ravindra Jadeja (15-ball 25*) gave RR a huge scare -- despite needing 54 off 18 balls -- before Sandeep Sharma had the last laugh in the final over.

CSK were way behind in the run-chase, requiring 59 off last 24, before Dhoni-Jadeja lit up the atmosphere with some big hits. The equation was 21&nbsp;off the last six and many would have still backed Samson &amp; Co. Sandeep, who went for only 13 off his two overs and claimed a wicket, started&nbsp;with two wides on the trot and conceded as many sixes successively before he&nbsp;bounced back in the final three balls to take his side to a narrow three-run win.

R Ashwin -- who returned with the Player-of-the-Match award (22-ball 30 &amp; 2/25) in RR's win over CSK -- recently recalled Sandeep's dramatic last over and revealed the 'riskiest idea' which worked wonders for the pacer.

How the 'riskiest ball bailed Sandeep out of crisis

During a chat on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed, "Sandeep Sharma bowled that last over to Dhoni and he smashed him for two sixes. When you are defending 20 runs and when a guy like Dhoni has smashed you for 2 sixes, the odds of you coming out on top of that battle from there are literally none."

He added, "What’s the highest risk ball at this point?", I asked Sandeep." To this, he&nbsp;replied, "Slower length ball."

"I said, ‘You try bowling that to him now’. At the end of the day, at that point in time, it is the riskiest ball that the batter won’t be expecting. Because he knows that the bowler is under immense pressure," the RR spinner added.

At present, RR occupy the fourth position in the points table -- with ten points from nine games -- and host the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 48&nbsp;of IPL 2023 on Friday evening (May 05).

IPL 2023: Ashwin reveals how 'riskiest idea' helped Sandeep outfox Dhoni in RR's tense win over CSK

After leading Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a three-run win over his former franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2023, on Wednesday (April 12), R Ashwin was fined 25 per cent of his match fees for breaching IPL Code of Conduct. Ashwin, who was awarded the Player-of-the-Match for his 30 (22) and 2 for 25 (4) in Chennai,&nbsp;criticised select decisions made by the umpires in the ongoing season and, thus, paid a heavy price for it.

'Some of the decisions&nbsp;have left me a little flummoxed'

After the match, Ashwin said, "I'm quite surprised the umpires changed the ball for dew on their own. It's never happened before and I'm quite surprised." He added, "Some of the decisions in this year's IPL on the field have left me a little flummoxed, to be honest. It left me flummoxed in a good or bad way because what you need is a little bit of balance. We're going as a bowling team and we're not asking for the ball to be changed. But the ball was changed on the umpire's accord. What reason - I did ask the umpire but he said we can change it.

“So I hope every time there's dew they can change it - every single time going forward in this IPL. You can do whatever you want but you need to be standard," Ashwin concluded.

It is to be noted that&nbsp;Article 2.7 states, "Public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in a Match or any Player, Team Official, Match Official or Team participating in any Match, irrespective of when such criticism or inappropriate comment is made."

In addition, RR captain Sanju Samson was penalised with&nbsp;INR 12 crore fine for his side's slow over-rate in their defence of 176 vs CSK. Being asked to bat first, RR posted 175-8 and restricted MS Dhoni's CSK for 172 for 6 to win by three runs and top the points table.

IPL 2023: R Ashwin fined 25% of match fees after RR's narrow win over CSK! Here's why

Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw the Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by five runs in a high-scoring thriller at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Wednesday (April 05). During the game, there were several thrilling moments but R Ashwin giving a run-out warning to Shikhar Dhawan at the non-striker's end certainly made heads turn.

Moreover, the cameras soon shifted towards Ashwin's RR teammate Jos Buttler, stationed at the deep, and the video of the entire incident has gone viral in no time. Here's the clip:

It happened in the fourth ball of the seventh over when opener Prabhsimran Singh was on strike with captain Dhawan at the non-striker's end. India entered the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final early this month and are set to face Australia in the title clash, set to be held at The Oval, London on June 07. Ever since India qualified for the summit clash, many felt the team management might include star all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the marquee clash with an ICC trophy at stake.

Hardik has not played a Test since India's tour of England in 2018, where he picked a five-fer. He has done reasonably well in the 11 Tests and even has a hundred to his name. Nonetheless, due to his back issues, Hardik hasn't been risked by the Indian team management in all formats and only features in white-ball cricket of late.

When he was asked if he will return in the Test arena for the WTC final, Hardik told reporters ahead of the India-Australia ODIs, "No. I am ethically very strong person. I haven’t done 10% to reach there. I am not even a part of 1%. So me coming there and taking someone’s place will ethically not go well. If I want to play Test cricket, I’ll go through the grind and earn my spot. Hence, for that reason I will not be available for the WTC final or future test series until I feel that I have earned my spot."

Now, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Hardik for his take on a possible Test return during the WTC final. Ashwin hailed the all-rounder and said it is a 'proper statement to the cricket fraternity and to the entire world by Hardik'.

"We have reached the WTC final and many felt that Hardik Pandya must return to the Test side. Of course, those opinions were great since Hardik has done well in England with the limited Tests he has played there. But Hardik has said that it won't do justice and, 'I will come back when I feel it's the right time to play Test cricket and I haven't even played one percent role in qualifying for the finals'. This is a proper statement to the cricket fraternity and to the entire world by Hardik Pandya," Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.

He added, "We often tend to blame others for our failures. We believe in superstitions or find other reasons because at the end of the day we are disappointed. But Hardik has accepted that he isn't eligible to play Test at the moment. That is a big statement coming from a player- like him. Hats off to Hardik Pandya."

“Why am I hyping this so much about Hardik? Well, because he led us in Rohit Sharma's absence in the first ODI against Australia. Many has praised saying that he doesn't back down from a challenge. Australia were on course for a huge total. But Hardik played a role in bringing back Siraj and Shami even after the spinners took two wickets because he felt there was something in the wicket for the pacers. To get a team all out for 188 from 155 for three is phenomenal achievement by India,” Ashwin concluded.

Hardik has played 11&nbsp;Tests, scoring&nbsp;532 runs -- with a hundred and four fifties -- along with claiming 17 wickets.

This is a proper statement: R Ashwin lauds Hardik Pandya for his remark on Test return during WTC final

A lot has been said and written about KL Rahul of late. While he hasn't featured for India in the shortest format after the T20 World Cup and his form in red-ball format led to a huge war of words between Venkatesh Prasad and Aakash Chopra, the right-hander is on a roll as an ODI batter. In the ongoing India-Australia ODIs, the wicketkeeper-batter struck a magnificent 75 not out in the series opener, helping the Men in Blue win by five wickets.

Ever since Rahul has been given the task to bat at No. 5 in ODIs, the 30-year-old has come to his own. He has played&nbsp;18 innings at No. 5, slamming&nbsp;742 runs with one hundred and seven fifties at an average of 53.00. Thus, India's veteran off-spinner R Ashwin shunned Rahul's critics and lauded him for performing a tough role with ease. In addition, he compared him with MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, two of India's finest middle-order batters in white-ball formats.

'Yuvraj,&nbsp;Dhoni&nbsp;batted mostly at 5 in ODIs and made a mark. Rahul is doing a tough job with ease'

"Consider everyone who is currently batting at No.5 in ODI cricket. There isn't even one cricketer at the moment who bats at No 5 and has made a mark for himself. Because it is a very tough position to bat. Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni were the only two guys who batted mostly at 5 in ODIs and made a mark for themselves. Dhoni mostly batted at 6 though. For Australia, it was Michael Bevan. It is not at all easy to bat in that number in ODIs," said Ashwin on his Youtube channel.

The 36-year-old Test specialist further asserted, "If people we like do something good and get trending on Twitter then we will start worshipping and celebrating them like anything but if they are going through a bad patch, we will not celebrate their value or the magnitude of what they are doing. KL Rahul is doing a very difficult role with ease. He has been a proper box-office in ODIs. He has got phenomenal numbers batting at No.5. GO and search if you can find anyone even close to him in terms of numbers in ODIs."

"Immediately after his knock (in Mumbai) people were like 'KL Rahul is back'. KL Rahul didn't go anywhere in ODI cricket to be back. He didn't do anything for us to put him down one day and celebrate him the other day. We shouldn't do that. We should know how to assess a player's performance. If we don't do that, we will back all the wrong and play all the wrong people," Ashwin concluded.

Rahul-starrer India is involved in the third and final ODI versus Australia, in Chennai, on Wednesday (March 22). The series is on the line, at 1-1, and Rahul will once again hope to perform with the bat and take Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. to a series triumph versus the No. 2 ranked Australian side. He will then lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023.

GO and search if you can find anyone even close to him in terms of numbers in ODIs." Also Read: 'We have...': Rahul Dravid provides big update on India's 2023 World Cup preparations "Immediately after his knock (in Mumbai) people were like 'KL Rahul is back'. The series is on the line, at 1-1, and Rahul will once again hope to perform with the bat and take Rohit Sharma & Co. to a series triumph versus the No. 2 ranked Australian side. He will then lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023.

India ended the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia by beating the visitors 2-1 after the fourth and final Test, in Ahmedabad, ended in a tame draw on Monday (March 13).&nbsp;The series saw India enter the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they will once again face Australia, on June 07, in order to win the coveted title. There were many top performers for India with the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel doing well in the four Tests. Talking about the spin-bowling all-rounder Axar, he saw his stocks rising as a batter with three crucial half-centuries. During the Ahmedabad Test, the local boy Axar achieved a massive feat on Day 5 of the series decider.&nbsp;

Axar became the fifth cricketer to hit 500 runs and take 50 wickets in 12 Tests. He now has 513 runs and 50 wickets in the purest format of the game. In addition, he became only the second Indian to achieve the historic feat after veteran R Ashwin (596 runs and 63 wickets).

The exclusive club is led by South Africa's Aubrey Faulkner (682 runs and 52 wickets), who is followed by Australia's Jack Gregory (744 runs and 57 wickets) and England great Ian Botham (549 runs and 70 wickets).

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also lauded Axar for his performances in the 2022/23 BGT. "Well, he's been phenomenal with the bat. He didn't get too many chances with the ball in this particular series because Jadeja was doing the damage. Ashwin bowled well in the series. So, I feel as a batter, you know Axar coming at No.8 or 9 and scoring those winning knocks, 70 in Delhi and another one in Nagpur," Harbhajan told India Today.

"He put India ahead in this game by scoring those runs in quick fashion and, of course, good to see him evolving himself as an all-rounder more with the bat now, since he has got the opportunity and he is making the most of it and it's good to see that he's not shying away," Bhajji added.

Axar ended with 264 runs -- third-most overall -- along with three scalps in the just-concluded Australia Tests.&nbsp;

BGT 2022/23: Axar Patel attains STAGGERING feat after India beat Australia 2-1

Virat Kohli ended his Test century drought in the just-concluced India-Australia Ahmedabad tie. On Day 4 of the Ahmedabad contest, India resumed their first-innings at 289 for 3, in reply to Australia's 480, with the former Indian captain batting on 59. On a pitch which was akin for batters, the 34-year-old Kohli ended his three-year-long Test-century-drought by smashing a sublime 186, laced with 15 fours. After the end of the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin recalled the conversation he had with Kohli after the third and penultimate Test in Indore.

Ashwin revealed that he tried to encourage Kohli as he felt the veteran batter wasn't batting poorly but was just getting dismissed on 30s and 40s. "Personally, Virat and I had a conversation after the Indore Test. Not that we both connect too often on such lines. But I personally felt, Virat was batting well, he was getting time and was getting out after getting 30s and 40s," Ashwin was quoted as saying to Star Sports after the four-match Test series.

The off-spinner asserted, "It was always evident and it needed someone to put an arm around his shoulder and say, ‘you are batting brilliantly, you just need to hang in there for a bit and things are going to turn’. And it’s turned for me in my cricketing career as well."

Ashwin further opined,"I felt the big knock was around the corner. Even in the ODI series before this, Virat did play some of his wonderful knocks. Having him and Puji batting well together gives us a lot of advantage because one can eat up balls and the other has a real presence."

"As a cricketer, playing with them all these years, I know runs on the board are very important. And these two players along with Rohit, I can sit and watch them all day,” added the spinner, who won Player-of-the-Series award along with Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin ended the series with 25 wickets -- most by any -- followed by Jadeja (who returned with 22 scalps).

R Ashwin returned with 6 for 91 as India finally managed to dismiss Australia for 480 on Day 2 of the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad on Friday (March 10). Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green kicked off proceedings on Day 2 (March 10) from the overnight score 255/4 and continued to pile runs. The pair added a whopping 208-run fifth-wicket stand, from 170-4 to 378 for 5, as the duo struck a century each on a flat track but Ashwin remained economical all throughout the innings and ended with 6 for 91 to attain a huge feat.

R Ashwin equals Nathan Lyon with most wickets in India-Australia Tests during Day 2 of Ahmedabad tie

Australia thumped India by nine wickets on Day 3 of the third and penultimate Test, at the Holkar Stadium, Indore, on Friday (March 03), to keep the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar series alive at 2-1, with the final Test on March 09. Resuming the day's play, Australia needed only 76 runs for a famous win and chased down the target with Travis Head leading the charge (49*). With this win, Australia have also qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The day's play started with R Ashwin getting rid of in-form opener Usman Khawaja. The left-hander failed to open his account and was caught behind by KS Bharat as Ashwin drew the first blood in the opening over. However, from thereon, there was not much to cheer for India as Head-Labuschagne looked confident, bought some time in the middle, and guided the side to a memorable nine-wicket triumph.&nbsp;

Talking about the Test match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. Nothing clicked for India on a pitch that turned fair and square. The likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, etc. all fell flat as&nbsp;Matthew Kuhnemann, playing his second Test, ended with a five-fer (5 for 16).
