Fresh off picking up his 500th Test wicket, Ravichandran Ashwin has now become the no. 1 bowler in the ICC Test bowling rankings, released on Wednesday (Mar 13), eclipsing his teammate Jasprit Bumrah.&nbsp;

Ashwin reclaimed the top spot, courtesy of a nine-wicket haul in the final Test match against England in Dharamshala. The off-spinner accounted for four scalps in the first innings before snaffling up his 36th five-wicket haul in the second innings. His performance allowed India to wrap up the series 4-1 by cruising to a triumphant innings victory.&nbsp;

Ashwin first became the no. 1 ranked ICC Test bowler in November 2015 and since then,&nbsp;has been one of the mainstays for the Indian team, especially in the Indian conditions.&nbsp;

The top ranking would be a little more special for Ashwin this time as he had to return home during the third Test in Rajkot to tend to his hospitalised mother in Chennai. Not only did Ashwin report back for duty but he also played a key part in ensuring India didn't face any more hiccups in wrapping up the series.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bumrah slipped to the second spot, having not played one of the matches during the Test series. He is tied with Australia's Josh Hazlewood.&nbsp;

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed it was captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid who stepped up big time when he had to leave the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to his ailing mother. Ashwin said Rohit helped arrange a private plane that took him to Chennai. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he was waiting for his parents' call after picking up the 500th wicket, earlier in the day. "Around 7 pm, I called my wife before going to shower. My parents did not pick up the calls. And I found my wife's voice was breaking. She asked me to move away from my teammates and then she told me that my mother collapsed after a severe headache." Ashwin said he contemplated returning home but couldn't find a flight as Rajkot Airport shuts down by 6 pm. It was then that Rohit came to his rescue and helped arrange the flight. "Rohit and Rahul bhai (brother) came to my room. Rohit saw me thinking and he said 'what are you thinking about? Just pack your bags and leave now'. He told me that he would try and arrange a charter flight for me," said Ashwin. "A big thank you to Cheteshwar Pujara. He spoke to a lot of people and arranged for the charter flight. I didn't know how I spent 2 hours in that flight back home," he added. "Rohit is like 'That's okay'. But I told Kamlesh to stay back with the team. However, when I went down to the lobby, Kamlesh and a security person were standing there. Rohit was calling Kamlesh and keeping a tab on me throughout the journey back home." Ashwin said he was extremely grateful to Rohit and wished god gave him more. “I’ve played under several captains and leaders, but it is his (Rohit’s) good heart that has made him what he is today – someone with five IPL titles as equal to Dhoni. God doesn’t give it easy. He should get something bigger than all that." "I already had respect for him as a leader, he backs a player without question until the last moment. It’s not an easy thing. Even Dhoni does that. But he takes 10 steps more.” Ashwin returned after the brief visit home and played a major part in the remainder of the series which India won 4-1. (With inputs from agencies)

After folding England for a modest total of 218, Kuldeep, who picked a five-wicket haul, urged Ashwin to lead the team out of the ground, only for the veteran to refuse the honour. Usually, the bowler taking a five-fer is given the honour of leading the team back to the pavilion but since Ashwin is playing his 100th Test, Kuldeep took the opportunity to show respect to his senior. The leg-spinner tossed the old SG ball to Ashwin and urged him to accept the crowd's applause. However, Ashwin remained adamant that Kuldeep be the one to lead off the field. After a friendly back-and-forth between the two, Kuldeep took the lead while Ashwin and the remaining teammates followed him. 𝙈𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚! Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed that it was his hospitalised mother who urged him to join the national side after he had left the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to her. Soon after taking 500 Test wickets during the match, Ashwin was forced to race back to Chennai after learning that his mother had been admitted due to a blackout. "When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, 'Why did you come?'" Ashwin told Espncricinfo. "The next time she was conscious, she said, ''I think you should go back because the Test match is happening," Ashwin added. Ashwin reflected that his entire family had dedicated their lives to his cricketing career, adding that the journey had been a rollercoaster ride for all of them. "I am sure most parents and families are like that, but my parents' lives are even more intertwined with my cricket. I mean, I'm in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me." Also read | Explained: Why IPL is cricket equivalent version of English Premier League According to Ashwin's wife Prithi Narayanan, the family had initially decided to not inform the off-spinner as he was busy with the Test match. Ashwin's long-term teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, who has family in Rajkot, was called upon by the Ashwin family. "So I dialled Cheteshwar Pujara and his family were of great help. And once we found a way out, I called up Ashwin because after the scans, the doctor suggested it was better to have her son around," Narayanan told The Indian Express. Ashwin's 100 Test milestone After Rajkot, Ashwin played the Ranchi Test as well and will now be playing his 100th Test match in Dharmshala, starting Thursday (Mar 7). So far, the veteran has accounted for 507 wickets in 99 Tests, including 35 five-fers. He is the ninth-highest wicket-taker overall, second-most by an Indian. IND vs ENG: ‘No praise is enough’ - Rohit Sharma all praise for R Ashwin before spinner’s 100th Test

Indian off-spinner R Ashwin revealed that he occasionally&nbsp;befriends media people to get footage of the opposition batters batting in the nets. Ashwin, who is set to play his 100th Test when India lock horns with England in Dharamsala,&nbsp;made use of this ploy during the 2020-2021 Border Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. Back then, he reaped the rewards of this strategy by finishing the series with 12 wickets from three Tests.&nbsp;

Ahead of the Dharamsala Test, Ashwin told Jio Cinema, "Sometimes I make friends with the media guys and get footage from the backside when the batters are practicing in the nets. When I went to Australia, there were occasions where Marnus and Smith were using their feet and going back in the nets. It works because I feel human beings are very insecure. The moment they know you have them, you're winning half the battle."

Further, the 37-year-old Ashwin heaped praise on the Australian and England batters for playing spin well and coming better prepared for their tour to the subcontinent.&nbsp;

"I feel England and Australia batters bat against spin much better than some of our own on occasions because they know this is a very stern challenge, so year across they end up preparing to play spin like we prepare to play seam and bounce," he added.

Ashwin will become the 14th Indian to enter the 100-Test club when he takes on the field for India's fifth and final match versus England in Dharamsala. In the ongoing five-match series at home, the veteran has 17 scalps -- fourth-most -- and also entered the coveted 500-wicket club in the format. In the fourth and penultimate Test,&nbsp;in Ranchi, he attained his 35th five-fer to surpass former great Anil Kumble's record of most wickets in home&nbsp;Tests. Thus, he will surely look to make the most of his landmark Test in Dharamsala and help the team win the series 4-1.&nbsp;

IND vs ENG, Dharamsala Test: R Ashwin recalls how 2012 England series taught him a wonderful lesson

R Ashwin heaped praise on Sanju Samson and has labelled the young Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain as 'phenomenal' ahead of the Indian premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which gets underway on March 22. Samson has been leading the RR franchise since IPL 2021 and led them to the final in IPL 2022. In IPL 2023, the Royals ended fifth and narrowly missed out on entering the playoffs. Ashwin, who has been part of the Royals since 2022, feels Samson is a phenomenal leader and also dwelled on his on and off-field bond with the keeper-batter.

Speaking to Star Sports, Ashwin told, "On the field, I try and give him inputs as I see how the game is panning out. However, that relationship off the field doesn’t come on the field. It’s generally that younger brother, elder brother sort of a relationship off it. On the field, we are able to switch off."

He further opined, "I do what he wants and give my inputs and then he takes what he wants and gets on with it. I find Sanju as a young captain, he is able to differentiate, and demarcate both which is phenomenal."

Ashwin added, "Sanju is extremely funny off the field. I am not sure a lot of people understand that or probably know that. It’s a problem of perfection a lot of people battle how you see someone on the ground and how they are off it, it’s completely different."&nbsp;

At present, Samson is gearing up for IPL 2024 whereas Ashwin is currently part of the Indian team who will take on England in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, starting on March 7. He will join the Samson-starrer RR franchise soon after the end of the India-England Test series.&nbsp;

I am not sure a lot of people understand that or probably know that. It’s a problem of perfection a lot of people battle how you see someone on the ground and how they are off it, it’s completely different." At present, Samson is gearing up for IPL 2024 whereas Ashwin is currently part of the Indian team who will take on England in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, starting on March 7. IPL 2024: Rajasthan Royals spinner R Ashwin heaps praise on 'phenomenal' captain Sanju Samson

England's star batter Joe Root spoke at length on the difference between two modern-day great spinners in R Ashwin and Nathan Lyon. Ashwin recently returned to his usual best with a five-fer in India's fourth and penultimate Test versus England, in Ranchi, which the home side won by five wickets. Lyon, on the other hand, led the charge in his side's 172-run victory over hosts New Zealand at the&nbsp;Basin Reserve, Wellington with a ten-wicket haul (also top-scoring with a 41 in Australia's second innings). Root, thus, highlighted the difference between the two in a recent interaction ahead of the fifth and final Test versus India in Dharamsala.

Speaking on Sky Sports podcast, Root said, "I'd say, Ashwin is making sure that you don't play the previous ball. He is very good at trying to drag you across the crease and get your head to one side of it and beat both edges quite frequently." The former England Test captain further opined, "With Lyon it is all about, I think, especially in the first half of the Test match to get really over the top of the ball, get bounce bowl in between you like the knee roll and hit and try to bring short leg and leg slip into the game as much as he can and then just slowly, get slower with his pace and drift wider into that. There's that footmarks, um, Mitchell Starc has so kindly done for him for such a long period of time."

He added, "Whereas Ashwin is probably slightly trying to find ways of getting you out rather than trying to wear you down, over long periods of time. That's how I've always tried to approach them. Be trying, trying to be clear, right, because that's how they're generally gonna operate."

Lyon recently became the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Tests during his side's first Test win over NZ in Wellington. The Aussie off-spinner has 527 wickets in 128 Tests. R Ashwin vs Nathan Lyon: England batter Joe Root points out difference between two great spinners

Dhruv Jurel (39*) and Shubman Gill (52*) stitched an unbroken 72-run sixth-wicket stand to help India chase 192 on Day 4 of the fourth and penultimate Test versus England, at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Monday (Feb 26). The day's play started with India being 40-0 and moved to 84 for no loss before English spinners chipped in with regular breakthroughs. However, Jurel (who scored a magnificent 90 in the first innings) and Gill remained unbeaten to take India to a stunning five-wicket win. With the victory, the hosts have&nbsp;clinched the five-match series with&nbsp;an unassailable 3-1 lead.

India started the day on a confident note with skipper Rohit Sharma (55) looking in his elements and constantly guiding his in-form partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (37). The duo added 84 for the opening stand but Joe Root, Shoaib Bashir (who took a five-fer in the first essay) and Tom Hartley made use of the turn and low bounce on offer to dent India. At 120-5, the home team&nbsp;had a job in hand but Jurel and Gill got together and resorted to smart cricket -- playing with soft hands, stepping outside the crease against the spinners&nbsp;and running well between the wickets --&nbsp;to take India to a win.&nbsp;

The Ranchi Test&nbsp;proved to be a hard-fought battle from the word go. Opting to bat first, Ben Stokes-led England got off to a flier on Day 1 before being reduced to 112-5, thanks to debutant pacer Akash Deep's three successive strikes. Nonetheless, Joe Root's 122* helped England post 353. In reply, India were on the backfoot at stumps on Day 2, reeling at 177-7 (despite Jaiswal's 73). The next morning saw India's fightback, led by young keeper-batter Jurel who scored a brilliant 90. The 23-year-old's knock, which included a 76-run eighth-wicket stand with spinner Kuldeep Yadav (28), helped the hosts get close to England's 353 as they managed 307.

In their second innings, England were well-placed at 110-3 with Zak Crawley leading the&nbsp;charge. However, R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav tested the English batters throughout with the former taking 5 for 51 to dismiss the opposition for a paltry 145. Jurel also contributed from&nbsp;behind the stumps with his proactiveness and keeping skills.&nbsp;England fell flat on a tricky surface -- with a tinge of low bounce&nbsp;throughout -- to set up only a 192-run target. The total wasn't daunting but the visitors made India toil hard for every run before Gill and Jurel's unbeaten stand.

Jurel, Gill and spinners help India beat England in 4th Test in Ranchi as hosts clinch five-match series

R Ashwin continues to add feather to his illustrious cap. During Day 1 of the fourth and penultimate Test between India and England, the ace spinner&nbsp;became the first&nbsp;from the country&nbsp;to claim 100 wickets against England&nbsp;in the purest format of the game. In addition, the 37-year-old&nbsp;became the seventh&nbsp;man in the history of the sport to achieve the rare double of 100 scalps and 1,000-plus runs (first-ever Indian). Against England, he is the fourth with this rare double in Tests.

Ashwin achieved the special feat during the opening session of the fourth Test, which kicked off&nbsp;at the JSCA International Stadium on Friday (Feb 23). The wily off-spinner removed dangerman Jonny Bairstow, who was looking good in the middle, to attain the rare double. He trapped the Englishman lbw after the veteran batter went for a sweep but missed connecting the ball. Initially, the on-field umpire Kumar&nbsp;Dharmasena gave it not-out but a review from Indian captain Rohit Sharma took the decision upstairs, resulting in a wicket for the home side.

IND vs ENG, Ranchi Test: Ace spinner R Ashwin joins elite list after special double in Tests vs England

On Monday (Jan 29), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and versatile batter KL Rahul have been ruled out of the second Test versus England, Visakhapatnam, due to injury concerns. Thus, the board named three players as replacements including spinner Sourabh Kumar, batter Sarfaraz Khan and spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. Thus, India's revamped squad for the Vizag Test is quite an inexperienced one and former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh raised his concerns on the injury-hit unit.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan raised concerns on India's inexperience and pointed out that frontline spinner R Ashwin is the second-highest run-getter in India's updated squad for the upcoming Test in Visakhapatnam.&nbsp;

“The team looks decent, but lacks experience. Yes, there is Rohit Sharma, but the next best run-scorer is Ashwin. In terms of batting, the line-up looks weak. And if they play on a turning track, which I feel they will because they have added Washington Sundar while having Kuldeep Yadav, Ashwin and Axar Patel,” Harbhajan said after the squad announcement.&nbsp;

R Ashwin is India's second highest run-scorer: Harbhajan Singh on hosts' inexperienced squad for 2nd Test

England's former spinner Monty Panesar hailed R Ashwin as a 'brilliant' spinner ahead of both sides' five Tests in the Indian subcontinent, starting on Jan 25 in Hyderabad. Panesar feels Ashwin has adapted to different conditions brilliantly, over the years,&nbsp;to deliver the goods for India in the purest format of the game. It is to be noted that the wily Indian off-spinner is just 10 wickets away from claiming 500 wickets in red-ball cricket. Thus, he has a high chance to join the elite 500-wicket club during the home series versus Ben Stokes-led England.&nbsp;

<h2>'R Ashwin is like an app, he keeps updating every six months'</h2>

Ahead of the first Test, in Hyderabad, Panesar spoke to Hindustan Times and heaped praise on Ashwin. He said, "He has had the mindset to keep adapting and bowling different deliveries. He kept getting better. It's not easy all the time to take a lot of wickets on turning pitches. He's been given turners at home, but you can see the way he adapts all the time. He's like an app, he keeps updating every six months! That's what he has done throughout his career."

Ind vs Eng: R Ashwin is like an app, keeps updating - Former spinner Monty Panesar hails Indian star

England are set to tour India for a five-match Test series, starting next month. Ahead of the tour, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 16-man squad on Monday (Dec 11). The Ben Stokes-led visitors will be challenged by Indian spinners and it will be interesting to see how their aggressive batters respond to the challenge. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has opened up on the Test series and made a bold prediction.&nbsp;

Vaughan stated that he expects England to not back off from their aggressive approach, famously known as 'Bazball'. He, however, cautioned that it could all come down crumbling against the spin trio of R Ashiwn, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Speaking on Fox Cricket, Vaughan stated, "Ultimately, the hardest place to play in the world is India and if you actually go back to the Ashes when Nathan Lyon was fit and bowling nicely, Australia were 2-0 up in the series. Now that's just one spinner, if you look at that five-for he got at Edgbaston and the field was spread and England got out to him by playing ridiculous shots at times."

He further opined, "If you add in Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel on spinning wickets in India, they may get blown away, they may get absolutely destroyed. They will go out and play exactly the same way, we've already spoken about the impact they are going to try and achieve in India with the way they play." He added, "It will be great watching, but you will have to fancy three quality spinners might do a job on England when one quality spinner in Nathan Lyon did the job in English conditions. It's going to be very tough for them to win in India."

Now that's just one spinner, if you look at that five-for he got at Edgbaston and the field was spread and England got out to him by playing ridiculous shots at times." All you need to know He further opined, "If you add in Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel on spinning wickets in India, they may get blown away, they may get absolutely destroyed. They will go out and play exactly the same way, we've already spoken about the impact they are going to try and achieve in India with the way they play." He added, "It will be great watching, but you will have to fancy three quality spinners might do a job on England when one quality spinner in Nathan Lyon did the job in English conditions. It's going to be very tough for them to win in India." The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India's 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series versus South Africa, to be held in the African nation. Rohit Sharma will lead the side comprising the experience of R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul (who returns in the red-ball setup after his injury) whereas the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane sit out.&nbsp; Bumrah has been named as Rohit's deputy.

Pujara was not part of India's last Test series --&nbsp;where they beat West Indies 1-0 in the Caribbean island early this year. Rahane, who retained his place for the WI series post his impressive comeback in the 2021-23 WTC final, is also out of the squad. His scores in the WI Tests were 3 and 8.

Pujara continues to remain out of contention after his lengthy&nbsp;barren run. He managed to break his four-year-long century drought during the Bangladesh Tests in Dec 2022, but since then only managed one fifty-plus score. In addition,&nbsp;his twin failures in the WTC final, in June, led to his omission.

Youngsters such as Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill and inexperienced pacers namely Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna have been preferred as the selection committee have one eye on the future.

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin opened up on not being a part of India's playing XI for the ODI World Cup 2023 final, versus Australia, on Nov 19 at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. Ashwin played only one game in India's memorable WC campaign, which ended in a defeat in the final, and many thought he would be considered for the summit clash. However, he continued to sit out.&nbsp;

Ashwin said he supported Rohit Sharma's move, adding that the Indian captain had no reason to tweak the winning combination heading into the final.

India won 10&nbsp;games on the trot entering the final and Ashwin, who was out of the playing XI after India's tournament opener versus Australia, had little chance of coming in as a replacement.

<h2>'If I had been in Rohit's shoes, I would have thought 100 times...'</h2>

Speaking to S Badrinath on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "As far as I am concerned, I playing the final, team combination and all that is secondary. Firstly, it's about empathy, I keep stressing it a lot. It's about standing in someone else's shoes and looking at things from his/her viewpoint. If I had been in Rohit's shoes, I would have thought 100 times about changing the combination. It was going very well for the team. Why would I rest a fast bowler and play 3 spinners?"

Understood Rohit Sharma's decision to not play me in ODI World Cup 2023 final, says R Ashwin

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin recently recalled India's ODI World Cup 2023 final loss&nbsp;to Australia on Nov 19 in Ahmedabad. He stated that it broke his heart when he saw captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in tears following their six-wicket defeat. India had a stunning run throughout the home ODI WC, winning ten games on the trot to enter the summit clash, where they eventually came second. Ashwin recalled the campaign and spoke at length about the chemistry between Rohit and Kohli before hailing Hitman's leadership.&nbsp;

Speaking to S Badrinath on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, "Yes, we felt the pain. Rohit and Virat were crying. Seeing that it felt bad. Anyways, not meant to be. This team was an experienced team. Everybody knew what to do. And then, it was professional. Everybody knew their routines, warm-ups. I think two natural leaders gave the team the space to do these two and created a vibe."

Ashwin lauded Rohit's captaincy as Hitman led from the front, with his blazing starts, ending with 597 runs -- most by a captain in an ODI WC -- and marshalled the troops really well. He further opined, "If you look at Indian cricket, everybody will tell you MS Dhoni is one of the best captains. Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person. He understands every single person in the team, he knows what each one of us likes and dislikes. He has a great understanding. He puts in the effort to know each member personally."

He mentioned, "He puts in a lot of effort. Forgoes sleep and becomes part of meetings, he first puts in the effort. He makes an effort to understand how to explain tactics to each person. That's an advanced level of leadership in Indian cricket."

Ashwin then spoke highly about Rohit's fearless approach with the bat at the top and added, "And also, walking the talk. Telling everyone to play a brand of cricket is one thing, but doing it and showing it on the field is another thing. I have known Rohit for a long time. What he did at the top set the ball rolling. he gave us the confidence. He said 'it's okay if we get out for 150. At least we will set the tone, instil fear'. I think all 11 in the team had a great World Cup."

As per reports, the BCCI is keen to have Rohit as India's all-format skipper at least till the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. On Wednesday (Nov 29), head coach Rahul Dravid agreed to extend his contract, which was to end with the 50-over mega event, till the T20 WC next year.

'Rohit & Kohli were crying': Ashwin recalls India's CWC 2023 final loss, hails Hitman's leadership

R Ashwin&nbsp;opened up on getting just one game in the recently-concluded ODI World Cup at home. Ashwin was not part of India's initial World Cup squad but an injury to spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel led to his inclusion just days before the tournament's commencement. Ashwin featured in India's opening game, where they met eventual winners Australia in Chennai, but never featured in the playing XI from there on.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 37-year-old Ashwin said, "Never thought that my run at the World Cup would end after playing one match in Chennai, because I was bowling with good rhythm."

In the game between India and Australia, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Oct 8, Ashwin ended with match figures of 1 for 34 as India dismissed the Aussies for 199 in 49.3 overs riding on Ravindra Jadeja's 3 for 28. Later, India chased down the score with ease, despite early jitters, thanks to Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's 97 not out.

Ashwin revealed that he was going to play versus New Zealand, in Dharamsala, however, Hardik's absence&nbsp;changed India's plans. After that, India went ahead with five bowlers -- Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.&nbsp;

Reflecting on the hosts' campaign, Ashwin further added, "Both Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma said that they had well laid out, strong plans. This World Cup had us playing an exciting brand of cricket."

Never thought my journey would end in opening match: R Ashwin on getting just one game in CWC '23

India and Australia are set to lock horns&nbsp;in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, which will be held at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Nov 19). Ahead of the summit clash, India's 1983 World Cup-winning member Madan Lal feels R Ashwin has an 'outside chance' to feature in the playing XI. It is to be noted that Ashwin has got only one game so far in the tournament, when India faced Australia in Chennai on Oct 8.

<h2>'I do not think that India will opt to change the winning combination'</h2>

While speaking on Aajtak, Lal said, "Ravichandran Ashwin’s selection will depend on the conditions of the pitch. But I do not think that India will opt to change the winning combination in the final against Australia."

“Australia did not look comfortable at all playing Tabraiz Shamsi (in the second semi-final)) and they will not be comfortable playing Kuldeep Yadav either and I believe that you will get a great track to bat on in Ahmedabad,” the former India player further added.

Ashwin was drafted in India's final CWC squad after Axar Patel's injury.

Since then, he played in only one game -- against Australia where he ended with 1&nbsp;for 34. The wily off-spinner can come handy versus the Men in Yellow as they have two left-handed openers whereas the 37-year-old is more than reliable with the bat as well. However, there is very less chance of India tweaking their winning combination for the mega finale in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

The last time India played in Ahmedabad was when they took on arch-rivals Pakistan in match 14 of the CWC 2023 edition, on Oct 14. Back then, Jasprit Bumrah's 2 for 19 starred with the ball to guide India to a memorable seven-wicket win.

ODI WC final: 'He might have an outside chance to play': Ex-cricketer on THIS India player for Australia tie

Team India is on a roll in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition at home. They remain the only unbeaten team after winning their first five games. Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will next lock horns with England at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Ahead of the much-awaited encounter on Sunday (Oct 29), former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the home side can play three spinners in the playing XI for the Lucknow tie.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, "England do not play spin well. As it is, England are not playing well in the World Cup, and if the ball starts spinning, I don’t think they will be able to do much better. Playing three spinners might not be a bad option." He further suggested that Mohammed Siraj -- who has six wickets in five games in World Cup 2023 -- can be rested.&nbsp;

Bhajji opined, "Siraj can be rested. He has played back-to-back games. Shami has just come into the playing XI and has claimed a five-fer. If a pitch is a normal one and is not expected to offer a lot of turn, then I do not see too many changes in the team."

Harbhajan stated that big players are those who shine in high-pressure games and lauded the efforts of Virat Kohli, Rohit, Mohammed Shami, etc. in the ongoing ten-team tournament. "From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma, everyone has looked good. In the bowling, Shami came in and claimed five wickets. Big players are those that perform in big tournaments,” he added.

It is to be noted that India are looking to clinch their third ODI World Cup title and first-ever ICC trophy since 2013. After five games, they have ticked most of the boxes and will be confident taking on defending champions England, who have just one win from four games.&nbsp;

As per reports, Hardik Pandya is set to miss the England game. It is likely that he might not return to the group-stage matches after sustaining&nbsp;an ankle injury during the Bangladesh game on Oct 19 in Pune.

Shami has just come into the playing XI and has claimed a five-fer. If a pitch is a normal one and is not expected to offer a lot of turn, then I do not see too many changes in the team." "From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma, everyone has looked good. In the bowling, Shami came in and claimed five wickets. Big players are those that perform in big tournaments,” he added. It is to be noted that India are looking to clinch their third ODI World Cup title and first-ever ICC trophy since 2013. After five games, they have ticked most of the boxes and will be confident taking on defending champions England, who have just one win from four games. As per reports, Hardik Pandya is set to miss the England game. It is likely that he might not return to the group-stage matches after sustaining an ankle injury during the Bangladesh game on Oct 19 in Pune.

From Virat Kohli to R Ashwin: Top 6 Indian players to feature in most wins in ICC events

India's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey hailed R Ashwin ahead of India's upcoming clash versus Bangladesh in match 17 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Thursday (Oct 19) in Pune. Ashwin was drafted into India's final 15-member squad after Axar Patel's injury sidelined him from the mega event. Ashwin was part of India's squad for their last series in the run-up to the World Cup, where they faced Australia in the three ODIs (winning 2-1). The wily off-spinner ended with four wickets in two games and eventually became part of the World Cup squad.&nbsp;

Ashwin played India's tournament opener in the ODI World Cup, where they faced Australia in Chennai. Since then, he has been warming the bench as Shardul Thakur has been preferred over him. Mhambrey opened up on Ashwin not getting a chance due to the team combination and hailed him&nbsp;saying 'he is a great team guy'.&nbsp;

In the pre-match presser, in Pune, Mhambrey said, "It's a really tough one. When you have a world-class bowler (like Ashwin) in your 15, and you are unable to give him a game. It's a tough call and you have to take such calls. I think the conversation has always been team-centric. All the decisions that we have taken, not only before this game but over the last few years are based on the team. We go with the side that's best for the surface, and the best combination."

Mhambrey lauded Ashwin and stated, "And in that sense, he has been a great lad, he understands that. He is a great team guy. I have never seen him grumpy, never seen him complaining anytime for any of the last few years, he has been with us. Having someone like that really helps. And I think credit goes to him. Even after so many years, he is there, he wants to do well for the team, he turns up every practice session, goes through the rigours, and he keeps bowling. He is a great team man. I must compliment that."

Mhambrey, who joined the support staff in 2021, also opened up on Mohammed Shami not getting a chance in the home World Cup so far. "Honestly, it's never an easy decision. But I think we had a clear chat with him (Shami), whenever we select a squad, the messages from us are very clear. We pick a squad which feel is best for that wicket. Sometimes, you will miss out. Someone like him will miss out, someone like Ash will miss out, that's a communication that we have with him. That's very clear. It's a difficult decision with the quality that he brings to the team with the new ball, at the death. No doubt, it's a difficult decision but you have to take that call. You only have 11 on the field," he added.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma-led India are at the top in the points table with three straight wins.&nbsp;

Ashwin will fight till the last delivery: Tendulkar lauds star player's attitude and approach towards game

Axar Patel's injury opened the doors for R Ashwin's comeback in the ODI setup recently. After Axar suffered an injury during Asia Cup 2023, Ashwin was recalled in the ODI setup -- for the first time since early 2022 -- during the home ODIs versus Australia in the run-up to the 50-over World Cup, which starts on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

After the three ODIs, which India won 2-1, Ashwin replaced Axar in the CWC '23 final 15 as the latter is still recovering after&nbsp;the quadriceps strain. Now, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the decision and feels Ashwin is the right choice to replace Axar.

Talking to India Today, Ganguly said, "He is an outstanding spinner. He is probably the best off-spinner in the world. And also, he is the best spinner in India. I always think that in this format specialist is very important in this format. It’s a very good decision. Maybe it is a coincidence as Axar Patel was out for injury. But I think it's a very good decision."

Ashwin was impressive in the opening two ODIs versus Australia, claiming four wickets. He will look to start the upcoming ODI World Cup with a bang as India take on the Aussies in both sides' respective openers on October 8 (Sunday) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ashwin is a veteran of 115 ODIs and has accounted for 155 wickets. He was part of India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup, co-hosted by India. Thus, his experience will come in handy for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. as they look to replicate the 2011 success and also end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought.

R Ashwin’s inclusion in Team India's CWC '23 squad is very good decision: Former captain Sourav Ganguly

India will enter the ODI World Cup 2023 as a very strong contender to win the title. The home side, under Rohit Sharma, won the Asia Cup last month and won the three ODI series versus Australia 2-1, at home, which concluded on Wednesday (September 27). Rohit Sharma-led Team India will kick off their World Cup campaign on October 8 when they face Australia in their respective openers in Chennai. Ahead of the Chennai battle, former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan discussed India's playing XI for the Australia clash.&nbsp;

Gavaskar has backed captain Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, vice-captain Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja as the top seven whereas named Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah as the frontline bowlers. Thus, his XI doesn't have R Ashwin -- who was included in India's final 15 after Axar Patel got ruled out on Thursday (September 28) -- but the Little Master feels the 37-year-old could be added if India go ahead with three spinners.

Speaking on Star Sports, he said, "You can pick three fast bowlers in Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah or else can pick two fast bowlers because you also have Hardik Pandya then Ashwin will definitely be there."

On the other hand, former all-rounder Irfan stated, "I completely agree with the top 7. But it boils down to the bowling department. I want India to play five proper bowlers. Since you have Hardik as the sixth bowler you should go with bowlers having wicket-taking abilities. It is because the pitches India will get now will have dew factor involved so then you need to have a solid bowling line-up. So you either pick three pacers or if you feel like you want to get someone to accompany Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja...on a turning track, and if Ashwin is good enough the pick him."

CWC 2023: Will R Ashwin get a game vs Australia? Sunil Gavaskar, Irfan Pathan pick India's XI for opening game

Despite losing the third and final ODI, on Wednesday (September 27),&nbsp;India had a lot of positives coming out from their just-concluded three ODIs versus Australia at home. In their last series prior to the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05, India tested their benched players once again and also gave two games to R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI setup after a long gap -- having played his last in early 2022 -- with Axar Patel being injured during the Asia Cup.

Ashwin replaced Axar -- who is dealing with&nbsp;a left quadriceps strain -- and played the opening two encounters to account for four wickets. He looked in good rhythm&nbsp;but suspense persists regarding his World Cup spot as no official update has come on Axar's fitness. All teams have to announce their final 15 prior to September 28 and any changes after that date would need&nbsp;approval from the ICC. With suspense continuing on Ashwin's place, head coach Rahul Dravid revealed there are 'no changes' as of now on the final 15, which was announced early this month.&nbsp;

“We have to wait for an official confirmation or a decision on that. The NCA is in touch with the selectors and Ajit (Agarkar) so I will not make any comments on that. If there is any change you will get to hear about it officially, as of now there are no changes,"&nbsp;Dravid said in a press conference after the India-Australia ODIs on Wednesday.

After the Rajkot ODI, Dravid stated that he is 'really happy' with how things have shaped up for Team India with regard to their CWC 2023 preparations. "Jasprit got a couple of games, and bowled his quota of 10 overs. Siraj suffered from a bug but got back and was able to bowl today. It was good to see how Ashwin bowled in the first two games. KL and his keeping through 50 overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
Dravid added, "There are always areas you want to improve on, and we have ticked a lot of boxes. It's nice to see that the guys who have been out with injury, been away from a while, from our perspective, they've been able to get some good cricket, been able to spend time in the middle, get some runs, take some wickets, but there are always little things that you can improve."

India have reached Guwahati on Thursday evening (September 28), with Ashwin in the squad, for the two warm-up games -- on September 30 (versus England) and October 03 (versus the Netherlands in Trivandrum).

'As of now....': Rahul Dravid on whether R Ashwin will be part of India's CWC '23 squad

India beat Australia by 99 runs (DLS method) to win the second and penultimate ODI and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs, with the final game on Wednesday (September 28) in Rajkot. R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI format after his last ODI in early 2022, has made a strong case to be included in India's final 15 for the upcoming CWC '23 edition.&nbsp;However, former Australia captain Aaron Finch has made a bold statement. Finch believes Ashwin -- who has a strong chance to replace an unfit Axar Patel from the World Cup squad -- won't make the cut and might be there as a mentor for the current group.&nbsp;

Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. However, an injury to spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel during Asia Cup 2023, reopened the doors for Ashwin in the shorter format. In the two ODIs versus Australia, he has accounted for four wickets so far and, thus, has made a strong statement with Axar ruled out of the third and final game in Rajkot. Axar, who is dealing with a left quadriceps strain, is expected to return for the CWC '23 warm-up games. If he returns, it will be interesting to see if Ashwin remains part of India's World Cup plans.

Nonetheless, Finch doesn't think Ashwin will be part of the upcoming ICC event. Speaking on Star Sports, he said, "I think he (Ashwin) might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big gameplay."

<h2>'Wouldn't be surprised if he's there as a mentor'</h2>

"Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it's a Test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don't see him making that last 15, unfortunately," Finch, who led Australia to T20 World Cup glory in 2021, further added.

India and Australia will lock horns in the third and final ODI in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). All CWC '23 participating teams need to announce their final 15 prior to September 28. Hence, it will be interesting to see if Axar regains fitness and what the future has in store for Ashwin in the format.&nbsp;

Don’t see him in India's CWC '23 squad, might be there as mentor: Ex-Australia skipper on R Ashwin

Yuzvendra Chahal, who is out of India's ODI setup, lauded R Ashwin after the wily off-spinner's 3 for 41 in the rain-affected second and penultimate game between India and Australia in Indore on Sunday (September 24). Having a 1-0 lead, KL Rahul-led Men in Blue were asked to bat first on a flat track at the Holkar Stadium, Indore and they rode on Shubman Gill's 104, Shreyas Iyer's 105, Rahul's 52 and Suryakumar Yadav's 37-ball 72* to post 399/5.

In reply, Australia's chase got reduced to 317 in 33 overs after the second and final rain break. They never got going as Ashwin (3 for 41) and Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 42), after Prasidh Krishna's early strikes, dismissed the Aussies for 217 in 28.2 overs as the hosts won by 99 runs (DLS method). After Ashwin's brilliant spell, Chahal lauded the senior pro and took to his official account on X to share a heartfelt post.

During the match, Chahal wrote on X -- formerly known as Twitter --&nbsp;"Ravichandran Ashwin name is enough".

Ind vs Aus: Yuzvendra Chahal shares heartfelt message for R Ashwin after 2nd ODI

Axar Patel has been ruled out of the third and final ODI between India and Australia to be held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). The spin-bowling all-rounder,&nbsp;who's dealing with a left quadriceps strain, missed the Asia Cup 2023 final after&nbsp;getting&nbsp;injured&nbsp;during the Super Four game versus Bangladesh. However, he is expected to return for the CWC 2023 warm-up games.&nbsp;

With Axar remaining unfit, R Ashwin's hopes of entering the CWC squad has increased further. Ashwin&nbsp;made a comeback in the ODI format after a long gap during the Australia series. His last ODI appearance was in early 2022, but the wily off-spinner has claimed four wickets in two games and thus, voices continue to grow for his late inclusion.

Nonetheless, as per a report in Cricbuzz, Axar is expected to return for the World Cup warm-up games. This could put Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee&nbsp;in a serious dilemma as they have to name the final 15-player World Cup squad by September 27.

As of now, no replacement has been announced for Axar for the third and final ODI. The final encounter will see the return of regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah whereas the likes of Shubman Gill and all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been rested.&nbsp;

<section itemprop="articleBody">
It remains to be seen if Axar retains his spot or if Ashwin will make the cut eventually. The India-Australia three&nbsp;ODIs is led by the home side after they achieved an unassailable lead with a 99-run win (DLS method) in the second game&nbsp;on Sunday (September 24) in Indore.&nbsp;

Talking about the CWC warm-up games, India will play England (on September 30 in Guwahati) and the Netherlands (on October 03 in&nbsp;Thiruvananthapuram) before their tournament opener versus Australia in October 08 in Chennai. The upcoming ICC event begins on October 05 in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.

Axar Patel ruled out of third ODI vs Australia, to return for CWC '23 warm-up ties: Report

A day after Team India won&nbsp;Asia Cup 2023,&nbsp;the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (September 18)&nbsp;announced&nbsp;India's squad for their next assignment, the&nbsp;three-match ODI series versus Australia at home. KL Rahul will lead in the first two games whereas Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature only in&nbsp;the series finale. The squad sees the return of R Ashwin.&nbsp;The series opener will be held on Friday (September 22) in at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali.

The squad has been shared in two parts -- for the opening two games and the series decider. Interestingly, a lot of regulars have been rested with Rahul to lead the second-stringed side in the initial two ODIs. With Axar Patel picking up an injury during the Asia Cup, R Ashwin and Washington Sundar are part of all the three ODIs whereas Ruturaj Gaikwad -- who is set to lead India in the Asian Games starting on September 23 -- is&nbsp;part of the Rahul-led squad.

Meanwhile, Rohit, regular vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and&nbsp;Kohli will come back for the third and final ODI. In Hardik's absence, Ravindra Jadeja has been named as Rahul's deputy.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Shami, Mohd. Siraj.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav will be eager to make the most of their chances in the upcoming 50-over games, with main focus on the former's fitness. Meanwhile, Ashwin and Sundar will also be desperate to force the Indian team management to make some last-minute changes in the CWC 2023 squad -- which can be done by all teams until September 28 -- with Axar injured. The latter has, however, been added for the third ODI (subject to fitness).&nbsp;

Mohali and Indore will host the first two games&nbsp;on September 22 and 24,&nbsp;respectively. The series finale will take place in Rajkot&nbsp;on September 27 (Wednesday).

Recently, Cricket Australia also named a strong squad for the upcoming India series. Pat Cummins and Steve Smith have&nbsp;marked their&nbsp;return after missing the just-concluded South Africa series, in the African nation (which the Aussies lost 2-3).

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa

The series is India's last before the CWC 2023 edition. The mega event kicks off in Ahmedabad, India on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.

India will meet Australia in their tournament openers on October 8 in Chennai.

BCCI announces India squad for Australia ODIs: Rohit, Kohli to feature in series finale, R Ashwin returns

R Ashwin is set to make his ODI return, after a long time, during the India-Australia home series, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. With Axar Patel injured during the Asia Cup, it has opened the doors for Ashwin's ODI comeback in India's last series before the CWC 2023 edition at home, starting on October 05 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Not only Ashwin, Washington Sundar has also been included in the India squad for the three ODIs versus the Aussies. Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's rise since mid-2017, when Ashwin wasn't at his best in white-ball formats, along with India stressing for a left-hander down the order, with good hitting prowess, led to Ashwin being sidelined.&nbsp;However, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra feels Ashwin's fielding also kept him away from the shorter formats in recent years.&nbsp;

Mishra said while discussing India's team selection for the Australia series, on Jio Cinema, "Ashwin is undoubtedly a quality bowler and a wicket-taker, but remember this is not a 20-over game. It is of 50 overs. The only reason he has been picked is because if a spinner gets injured, then the team needs to have a wicket-taking option, which Ashwin brings. Ashwin has got an edge as an off-spin option, as India already has two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in Kuldeep Yadav."

<h2>'Why he is not in the team is for&nbsp;his fielding and right-handed batting ability'</h2>

"The Indian team will be looking at how Ashwin will be bowling against Australia, and to assess if he still has the wicket-taking abilities in this format. The only reason why he is not in the team is because of his fielding and right-handed batting ability. Jadeja and Axar are both lefties. Washington is a young player and has shown wicket-taking abilities apart from being a batting option. Plus, he provides an advantage with his fielding, something which holds importance in ODIs," he further added.

Ashwin, a veteran of 113 ODIs with 151 scalps, will be desperate to prove his fitness and wicket-taking abilities versus Australia. If Axar -- who has been included for the final ODI subject to fitness -- doesn't recover in time, the wily off-spinner will have a strong chance to enter India's squad for the upcoming home World Cup.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

For third and final ODI vs Australia:&nbsp;Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya, (Vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel (if fit), Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Not only Ashwin, Washington Sundar has also been included in the India squad for the three ODIs versus the Aussies. Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's rise since mid-2017, when Ashwin wasn't at his best in white-ball formats, along with India stressing for a left-hander down the order, with good hitting prowess, led to Ashwin being sidelined. However, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra feels Ashwin's fielding also kept him away from the shorter formats in recent years. Ashwin has got an edge as an off-spin option, as India already has two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in Kuldeep Yadav." Also read: Ravindra Jadeja's THIS key stat worries former player Aakash Chopra before ODI World Cup 'Why he is not in the team is for his fielding and right-handed batting ability' "The Indian team will be looking at how Ashwin will be bowling against Australia, and to assess if he still has the wicket-taking abilities in this format. For First two ODIs vs Australia: KL Rahul (C & WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna. For third and final ODI vs Australia: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya, (Vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel (if fit), Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.
