<p>We take a look at five TV shows that started out strong with a beloved and critically acclaimed first season, only to fumble things up in their subsequent seasons. Some of these shows slowly dropped in quality, while others plunged immediately.</p>
<p>While the reasons may vary, from a change in writers, creative differences, or studio interference, these shows will make you wonder what could have been.</p>

<h2>Heroes</h2>
<p>No show fits this list better than NBC's 2006 superhero thriller <em>Heroes</em>. Created by Tim Kring, the show focused on everyday individuals across the globe discovering that they have superpowers, leading to massive government cover-ups, secret organisations, and a super-powered serial killer that needed to be stopped.</p>

<p>Years before the superhero genre became a global phenomenon, the first season of Heroes became a true worldwide sensation, something at the time was mostly reserved for shows that gained popularity years after their release through reruns. But here was this superhero show achieving it in real-time.</p>
<p>So the hype for the second season was massive. But then the show faced significant disruption due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. Rather than supporting the writers and putting the second season on hold, the studio decided to proceed without them. This led to cut characters, changed storylines, weaker character arcs, and a slower pace.</p>
<p>This drop in quality was noticeable and turned off a lot of the show's growing audience. While the series did manage to run for four seasons, it never truly regained its momentum.</p>

<h2>True Detective</h2>
<p>The first season of the crime drama <em>True Detective</em>, created by Nic Pizzolatto, is arguably one of the best first seasons of a TV series ever made. The story, told in flashbacks, centred around Detective Rustin "Rust" Cohle and his partner Detective Martin "Marty" Hart as they investigated a series of child abductions. It was dark and gripping.</p>

<p>A junior Indian minister Wednesday (Dec 18) informed the country’s parliament that the government had banned 18 OTT platforms this year for publishing obscene and vulgar content. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan told Lok Sabha, the lower house of the parliament, that these 18 OTT platforms were blocked in March.</p>

<p>"The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries, and blocked 18 OTT platforms on 14th March 2024 for publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content under these provisions," the minister said.</p>

<p>Murugan was responding to a question asked by Shiv Sena-UBT Member of Parliament Anil Desai. He cited the IT Rules of 2021 while saying that the OTT platforms, also referred to as intermediaries, were obliged to make reasonable efforts by themselves against displaying or spreading obscene or pornographic content.</p>

Several OTT releases lined up, mark your entertainment calendar

<p>The Congress government in the southern Indian state of Karnataka is planning to impose cess on movie tickets as well as&nbsp;Over-the-Top (OTT) subscription fees to support the film industry.&nbsp;Karnataka Cine and Cultural Workers (Welfare) Bill, 2024&nbsp;was tabled in the state assembly on Friday (Jul 19) and if passed, the cess levied could range from one to two per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The additional revenue created by the taxes would be used to fund social security benefits such as the Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) for the cine workers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Any individual working in the film industry as an artist (actor, musician, dancer, etc.) or in any manual, supervisory, technical, artistic, or unskilled capacity is considered a cinema and cultural activist,"&nbsp;the bill reads.</p>

<p>"This also applies to people who are involved in activities that the government has declared in connection with this Act," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bill also demands the creation of a seven-member welfare board that will manage the funds collected for cine workers and cultural activists. According to estimates by the Karnataka Film Workers Artists and Technicians Union, there are 2,355 workers in the state working on films and shows.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Labour Department Secretary Mohammad Mohsin highlighted there were plans in the pipeline to impose a tax on theatrical plays performed in the state as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Karnataka Assembly's Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA R Ashoka criticised the move saying Congress had become a 'pauper government'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The price of petrol, diesel and everything is rising. They have put a tax on movie theatres and OTT subscriptions also. This government has become a pauper government. So there is no money. That's why they are generating the money," said&nbsp;Ashoka.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led state government imposing tax on OTT is not expected to go down well with the consumers, especially as the freebie politics have cost the exchequer plenty in the last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month,&nbsp;Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) said it was planning to hike bus fares by at least&nbsp;20 per cent after reporting an operating loss of Rs 295 crore ($35 million) in the last three months.</p>

Karnataka Cine and Cultural Workers (Welfare) Bill, 2024 was tabled in the state assembly on Friday (Jul 19) and if passed, the cess levied could range from one to two per cent. The additional revenue created by the taxes would be used to fund social security benefits such as the Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) for the cine workers. "Any individual working in the film industry as an artist (actor, musician, dancer, etc.) or in any manual, supervisory, technical, artistic, or unskilled capacity is considered a cinema and cultural activist," the bill reads. "This also applies to people who are involved in activities that the government has declared in connection with this Act," it added. The bill also demands the creation of a seven-member welfare board that will manage the funds collected for cine workers and cultural activists. According to estimates by the Karnataka Film Workers Artists and Technicians Union, there are 2,355 workers in the state working on films and shows. Labour Department Secretary Mohammad Mohsin highlighted there were plans in the pipeline to impose a tax on theatrical plays performed in the state as well. Karnataka Assembly's Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA R Ashoka criticised the move saying Congress had become a 'pauper government'. "The price of petrol, diesel and everything is rising. They have put a tax on movie theatres and OTT subscriptions also. This government has become a pauper government. So there is no money. That's why they are generating the money," said Ashoka. Earlier this month, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) said it was planning to hike bus fares by at least 20 per cent after reporting an operating loss of Rs 295 crore ($35 million) in the last three months. The scheme was one of the major poll planks of the party that became an instant hit with the women. However, the scheme's monetary repercussions have outweighed the electoral gains in only a year. <p>New voices should be applauded and given a platform, said actor Manoj Bajpayee on Friday as he lamented the lack of mentorship provided by the streaming services to independent filmmakers.</p>

<p>At a panel discussion at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here, the actor said when the streaming services started in India, they backed independent storytellers but now these platforms are giving priority to blockbuster films.</p>

<p>“One thing that all streaming services started with initially was that they were making independent cinema but that got lost somewhere. For some reason, it has gone down completely and now we see blockbuster films making their way big time."</p>

<p>“But the independent cinema movement that started and was getting such mentorship from the OTT platforms, is gone. And that is a very sad development,” Bajpayee said.</p>

<p>If there is no independent cinema, then the Indian film industry will not evolve, he stressed.</p>

<p>"We will only grow in terms of money but we will not grow as creative people. New voices should be applauded and given platforms. I think they were doing so beautifully well earlier," he added.</p>

<p>Bajpayee said it is unimaginable for independent films to get funding at par with tentpoles such as <em>Jawan, Pathaan</em>&nbsp;or<em> Tiger 3.</em></p>

<p>"It can't stand a chance and if you're giving shows at 9 am for an independent film, it will never do well. It will fall flat. I really request from this stage to all these platforms that they should revive that mentorship," the actor said.</p>

<p>Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the co-creators of Bajpayee's popular OTT series <em>The Family Man, </em>agreed with Bajpayee.</p>

<p>"Earlier, all these films were directly made or shown on OTT. Now it is a clause that it has to play in theatres and only then we will take it," Nidimoru said.</p>

<p>Krishna added, "This is happening worldwide right now. There used to be a time when there would be a film and then there would be an OTT movie. But The Russo Brothers made<em> The Gray Man</em>&nbsp;for Netflix and it is as big as any theatrical film. So now every film is a big film." Apoorva Bakshi, who backed International Emmy-winning series <em>Delhi Crime</em> and <em>Hunt for Veerappan</em>, said streamers are pouring in resources into making "blockbusters".</p>

<p>"There is no safe home left for independent films and that is happening because a lot of resources are going into the blockbusters. I believe independents help filmmakers to become better show creators and directors," she said.</p>

<p>Raj said being an independent filmmaker taught him and Krishna to be self-sufficient.</p>

<p>"We didn't know anyone in the industry, we taught ourselves. So this whole package of indie cinema gave us the confidence that wherever you give us, we can make a film, irrespective of the budget and the stars. I think that's what still keeps us going," he said.</p>

<p>Krishna believes independent filmmaking helps in coming to terms with the fact that "you won't get everything you want".</p>

<p>"You kind of adapt then, I think 'jugaad' is the word. You somehow get the job done and that's how we started making films... Then this OTT and series concept came to India. We were fans of the shows from the West but nobody knew how to make a series in India. I think that jugaad mentality and idea of going back and figuring out how it is done, that came in handy," he added.</p>

<p>The 54th edition of IFFI will conclude on November 28.</p>

<p>Arya will make his impending OTT debut with this show,&nbsp;making his long-format streaming debut with this horror series. Arya will be seen playing the role of a man named Gautam, who is on a rescue mission to find his family, along with some locals in the village of Kattiyal. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about his exciting project, Jamshad Cethirakath, aka Arya, shared, “My OTT debut with The Village has definitely been a different kind of experience. The show's concept, which is the horror-thriller element with a lot of gore, and a very rooted story was also never experienced in the Indian OTT market. I found that particularly enticing, which led me to pursue it further. The horror series is a class apart from all other horror genres seen on the Indian OTT platforms. A lot of times, the horror that we see in movies too is very restricted and one cannot go beyond a certain point while creating it, but here Milind (Rau - the director) has gone all out. I think this is a way for creators to believe in making this kind of content because people really want to watch these types of genres.”</p>
