Naturally, a movie based on the popular doll has got everyone curious. But if recent reports are to be believed, the Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig is not really kids-friendly.

According to reports, Barbie movie has been deemed unfit for children under the age of 12. In Britain, the film has got a 12A rating.

The rating has angered several parents who now must decide between denying their children a blockbuster movie about their favourite toy – or risk exposing them to adult themes they might not be ready for.

Controversial scenes and dialogues

The film was given official classification because, it contains "moderate innuendo, brief sexual harassment and implied strong language." The film also contains a bleeped-out 'motherf*****'.

In one scene there is a reference to masturbation, while another involves a group of men harassing Barbie, with one of them slapping her on the bottom. She responds by punching him in the face and ends up being arrested. She and Ken are then shown having their police mugshots taken.

In another scene, a child is shown melting a doll's hair with a lighter. The scene, in particular, was objected to by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and the body said it constitutes 'dangerous behaviour'.

The BBFC has also highlighted the film uses the words ‘crap’, ‘hell’ and ‘damn’.
Parents raise concern

Barbie dolls are extremely popular with children, some as young as three years old. The scenes have left parents concerned as they have criticised the makers for including risque content.

Clare Jones, 39, from Kent, told a British tabloid, “You would think filmmakers would aim it at the younger generation. I’m questioning whether to take my daughter and she’s a big fan. We even had a Barbie party last year. But now parents need to think ‘do we take them, do we not?’ It’s as though filmmakers have forgotten what Barbie is... as if they are trying to take their childhood away, trying to make children grow up before they have to.”

“A lot of it will probably go over children’s heads, but that’s beside the point. It shouldn’t have to go over their heads.”

Some on the Mumsnet online forum commented on the film's questionable content. One wrote “I really want to see it. My child is nine and plays with Barbies. But I don’t know whether to take her or not. I don’t think she’s ever watched a 12A before.”

Another added, “My seven-year-old is desperate to watch this but I’m reluctant as it’s a 12A. Stupid to make a film about a children’s toy which a lot of children won’t be allowed to see.”

Barbie movie is narrated by Dame Helen Mirren and co-stars Will Ferrell, singer Dua Lipa and Simu Liu among others and charts the adventures of Ken and Barbie when they swap their idyllic home for the real world.
Is Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's Barbie not a kid-friendly film?

The world is about to be hit by a pink tsunami as Barbie -- Hollywood's ironic new take on the doll feminists once loved to hate -- opens with a vast marketing campaign.

Not even an actors' and writers' strike has been able to put brakes on the juggernaut, with the first images of stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as her square-jawed boyfriend Ken, sending social media into a frenzy of fuchsia.

With the movie hitting big screens across Europe from Wednesday, and North America from Friday, the expectation is building at how director and indie film darling Greta Gerwig has tackled the most flagrant of corporate product-placement vehicles.

Many were surprised that the acclaimed feminist maker of Little Women, Lady Bird and Frances Ha would be tempted to take on a doll whose body is said to be so unrealistic she would not be able to walk if she were a real woman.

But already in the trailer, it is clear Gerwig's take on Barbie is nothing if not tongue-in-cheek.

After a few perfect "life in plastic" days with the other Barbies in their bubblegum Californian world, she has her heroine kick off her high heels to put on a pair of sensible Birkenstock sandals to leave Barbie Land behind and plunge into the real world.

With Ryan Gosling camping it up as a breezily sexist Ken bare-chested under a fur coat, the two go AWOL, to the horror of toymaker Mattel.

"If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you," the trailer proclaims. "The movie is packing so much in," Robbie told AFP on the pink carpet of the London premiere.

- 'Full of controversy' -

"There is so much joy, it's hilarious, it's very clever and it has a lot to say," said the Australian actress, who is also one of the film's producers. "It's a crazy ride and a visual spectacle. I cannot think of another movie that is like it."

While critics say Barbie has brainwashed generations of young girls with an unattainable ideal of beauty and thinness, others see her as a figure of female emancipation through figures like Astronaut Barbie and Barbie the surgeon.

Gerwig, 39, said her approach to tackling Barbie was "by not denying that she's full of controversy. "In some ways Barbie has been ahead of culture, in some ways she has been behind it," she told AFP. "But she has definitely been a topic of conversation for 64 years."

Chinese-born Simu Liu, who plays one of the many Kens in the movie, said he admired how Gerwig "doesn't shy away from some of the criticisms of Barbie, some of the very valid criticisms of body image and of diversity... but still wraps it in an era of optimism and hope."

Issa Rae, of Awkward Black Girl fame, who plays one of the Barbies, said despite all the "negative associations", for her Barbie went back to core memories of her childhood.

- Girl power makeover -

"I think about telling stories with Barbies, making Barbies kiss and thinking about all the different questions I had about life, posing that onto Barbie," she told AFP. "So people are very protective of her in that way."

Gerwig -- who wrote her first hits about New York life with her partner, Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach -- is next to take on another childhood cultural colossus by adapting the Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.

While Barbie's makers Mattel seemed happy to be cast as cartoon baddies in the trailer for the film, they are counting on the blockbuster giving their lodestar toy some "girl power" cred as she challenges the patriarchy.

But behind Barbie's Dayglo optimism, the turnover of Mattel's dolls division fell by nine percent last year.

And the old sexist stereotypes have not been easy to airbrush away. Uniformly blonde and white for decades, Barbie has been going through a huge makeover since 2016 with 175 different models reflecting different colours and body types -- "curvy, tall and petite" -- as well as dolls with physical disabilities.

Barbie movie first reactions are in; fans and critics call it a 'cinematic triumph'

It appears the 'Barbenheimer' trend is here to stay. A portmanteau of two of the most awaited movies of this summer — Barbie and Oppenheimer — it has caught on, thanks to not just the sheer appeal of both movies but also how amusingly different they are from each other. While Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is a grim biopic of the man who was instrumental in building a weapon of mass destruction, the other is a light and colourful Greta Gerwig directorial based on a popular little toy. And yet, as per The Hollywood Reporter, more than 20,000 people will do a double feature of 'Barbenheimer'. Elizabeth Frank, Executive VP Worldwide Programming & Chief Content Officer of AMC Theatres, said the fact that so many have already made plans and bought tickets to watch both the films on their opening day is an encouraging indication that the online buzz surrounding the films is translating into actual ticket sales.

After Vietnam banned Margot Robbie's much-awaited fantasy comedy Barbie, it might now be the turn of The Philippines. As per media reports, the censorship board of the country is debating whether to block the Warner Bros project from showing on local screens. The culprit? The film apparently depicts the "nine-dash line", a controversial demarcation used by China to assert its territorial claims in the South China Sea. It has been a source of territorial disputes between China and several Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, even though it has been repudiated by an international tribunal — which China does not recognise.

The presenters of the event surprised the actress with a special Barbie-themed cake, topped with what appeared to be a bejewelled tiara and a single pink candle, to mark her 33rd birthday. Joined by director Greta Gerwig and co-star America Ferrera, the actress had a jolly birthday celebration on stage as she promoted her much-anticipated film, slated to release on July 21. Paying homage to two Barbies from the 1990s, Margot wore two Versace looks at the Seoul event. The fashionista re-created the 1985 Day-to-Night Barbie's look right down to the doll's bedazzled phone and white hat. Later, she unveiled Barbie's evening look by removing her pink blazer and revealing a hot pink tulle skirt paired with a sparkly pink top. Check it out below!
It's official. Or maybe it is not yet. But as per projections, Margot Robbie-led upcoming Barbie movie is on track to defeat Christopher Nolan's biopic-thriller Oppenheimer at the box office. As per Deadline, Barbie, based on Mattel's fashion toy, is tracking for an impressive sum of $80 to $100 million in its opening weekend. This is double the projected collections of Oppenheimer. For months now, film buffs have been eagerly awaiting the release of both movies to see which one comes out on top. While Barbie was always considered to have more value for commercial moviegoers, it is wise never to underestimate Nolan, whose movie releases are events unto themselves.

Thus far, though, it appears the Greta Gerwig directorial will win. Both movies, it must be noted, have a production budget of $100 million.

Barbie vs Oppenheimer: Margot Robbie movie to beat Christopher Nolan's epic at box office?

After facing some complications over the release date, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is all set to release on 12 July 2023. Soon after that on July 21, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will also hit the theatres.

As per several reports, Tom Cruise is in a battle with Christopher Nolan over IMAX theatres. Tom Cruise is coming out with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One which recently had its world premiere in Rome.

On the other hand, Christopher Nolan is ready with Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy, also known as Tommy Shelby. The reason for this cold war is that most of the income streams from these premium IMAX theatres, so it becomes crucial for directors and producers to make sure that their movie occupies a good IMAX screen time.

Oppenheimer being released on July 21 means Tom Cruise will only stay in the IMAX theatres for roughly nine days. This gets even more twisted because the release date for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has been changed four times by Paramount Pictures before finally deciding on the final date.

The hype for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is unreal. It's quite unfortunate that because of the tiff between Cruise and Nolan, Barbie can only settle with standard theatres. Barbie's trailer was released recently and instantly made fans shop for all things pink.

Nolan reportedly shot Oppenheimer on IMAX cameras. He has a history of shooting his movies on IMAX cameras since 2008, like with The Dark Knight. His movie is expected to spend at least four weeks in IMAX theatres and as per sources, Cruise is trying to negotiate and “split the screens".

Several reports suggest that Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible movie will be a huge success just like his 2022 movie, Top Gun: Maverick. The film received rave reviews at its world premiere in Rome.

Apart from IMAX, Tom Cruise has also set his eyes on Dolby Cinemas, so it will be very hard for Barbie to reserve a spot in these premium theatres for at least four weeks. Given the hype and craze, Greta Gerwig’s movie is expected to gross a significant amount at the global box office even without premium theatres and doesn't need a good screen to prove that it's a good movie.

Even though Barbie is face to face in competition with Oppenheimer because of the same release date; it's not exactly a bad thing. Actual competition still lies between Tom Cruise and Christopher Nolan. Jared Comess, vice president of marketing and public relations at Paragon Entertainment Group, which owns the movie chain Paragon Theaters, said, "However, having two genres of film — in this case, a serious historical drama going up against a comedy based on a popular kid’s toy — can be good for business. It ensures there are options for all types of audiences."

Who will win? It's Tom Cruise vs Christopher Nolan at box office this July

Are you a Barbie or just a Ken? If you haven't lived under a rock so far, then you would have noticed the latest Barbie trend that has caught everyone's fancy on the Internet.

Are you a Barbie or just a Ken? If you haven't lived under a rock so far, then you would have noticed the latest Barbie trend that has caught everyone's fancy on the Internet. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated film Barbie, featuring Margot Robbie in the titular role, is all set to release in the summer of 2023. The film's makers teased fans as they shared character posters of the film introducing the impressive lineup of actors that are set to play a different version of Barbie or her boyfriend Ken in the film. Actors like Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Scott Evans, and Ncuti Gatwa are all part of the film. Interestingly, while actors who are playing different versions of Barbie have been given distinct character traits, the actors playing Ken are well, just...Ken- devoid of any specific traits. The posters provide a glimpse of various Barbies, revealing cast members like Dua Lipa, who’s making her acting debut as a Barbie who is a mermaid, and Kate McKinnon, who’s playing a Barbie who is "always in the splits," and Robbie as Barbie who is 'everything'. But all the actors are typically introduced as 'He is Just a Ken'. Barbie and its problematic past For years, Mattel- the maker of the Barbie doll, has been criticised for making the most popular doll in the world stereotypical. Critics have debated that the doll's appearance has been sexualised and it promotes a certain body type among young girls which is unrealistic. A typical Barbie doll has a narrow waist, a full chest, and long slender arms and legs. The doll is always perched on her toes- ready to slip into heels. When it was first introduced in 1959, it was typically blonde haired and adult bodied- inspired from a a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. Criticisms of Barbie are often centered around concerns that children consider Barbie a role model and will attempt to emulate her. One of the most common criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for a young woman, leading to a risk that girls who attempt to emulate her will become anorexic. With changing times, Mattel has consciously tried to change the image of Barbie dolls to make them more relatable for young girls. The mould of the doll too has undergone significant change to make Barbie look more realistic-thereby promoting a more positive body image. Over the years, Barbie has adopted various professions and ethnicity. We have a black Barbie, a doctor Barbie, and an Indian Barbie to name a few. While the Barbie doll has gone through changes, its male counterpart Ken has remained more or less the same. Greta Gerwig's land of Barbie The exact plot of the Barbie film is not known so far but the character posters seem to address a long-standing debate on how good an influence these dolls are on young girls. Gerwig seems to have used Barbie as a metaphor to represent the modern woman - who are known for more than their looks. Barbie has been considered an example of how women should be and so Gerwig's Barbies have various attributes and are not just sexual objects of desire for men. Notice how the men are depicted in the poster? They look brawny, and plastic and have no defined attributes. Women are typically known to juggle multiple roles in life. They have - for years- balanced both work and home beautifully while men are typically known to just achieve great heights professionally. Gerwig's sly dig on the societal imbalance did not go unnoticed on the internet. The social media trend The internet caught on to the Barbie trend almost instantly and made its own version of it- often equating real-life couples and on-screen popular couples to Barbie and Ken. In all the memes, the women were given attributes and the men were just Ken. Explained: Why is the Internet obsessed with Barbie memes?

A new teaser trailer for Barbie is here! The Margot Robbie-starrer is a live-action adaptation of popular fashion dolls. Robbie plays the role of titular Barbie, or at least one of the many Barbies. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu essay rival versions of Ken. The trailer shows in more detail the Barbie Land that was introduced by the first teaser, a fantasy land populated by Mattel toys. Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Emerald Fennell, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Sharon Rooney, Anna Cruz Kanye, Ritu Arya, Conor Swindell, Jamie Demetriou, Marisa Abela, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, and Ncuti Gatwa also star.

The trailer is set to the tune of Beach Boys' 1964 song 'Fun, Fun, Fun'. It gives a good sense of what the film would look like in terms of tone. In one scene, Ken says he wants to stay the night with Barbie, but when asked what he wants to do, he looks nonplussed. There is no 'Barbie Girl' song (by Aqua), though. Though there is "Hi Barbie!" and "Hi Ken!". You can watch the trailer above.

Overall, Barbie looks uber-fun, and not just because of the absolutely starry cast. The visual tone and aesthetic displayed here looks perfect for a movie of this kind. Gerwig, who has penned the screenplay with her husband and filmmaker Noah Baumbach, has proven herself to be not just a one-hit-wonder with Little Women after debuting with the brilliant 2017 coming-of-age film Lady Bird.

It is crazy, however, to think that Barbie will release in theatres on the same day as Christopher Nolan's Universal picture Oppenheimer. No, the respective audiences are not the same. Or maybe they might be? Today, movie buffs have eclectic tastes, and go watch all kinds of movies. Anyway, both movies have the allure of having great casts of actors.

Barbie releases on July 21.

While all the women seem to play a version of Barbie doll with a specific profession, the male actors seem to just play Ken.
Ever since Johnny Depp and Disney parted ways, the fate of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise has been uncertain. We haven't had a 'POTC' movie since 2017's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'. And Depp and the House of Mouse did not exactly say goodbye amicably. Earlier this year, Depp, during his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, said in no uncertain terms that he will never work with Disney again. The studio had earlier fired Depp after Heard accused him of domestic violence. A female-led spinoff starring Margot Robbie was announced, with 'Birds of Prey' scribe Christina Hodson writing the script.

But then Robbie in November said it may not be moving forward at all, something producer Jerry Bruckheimer denied earlier this month. Beyond that, there has been little confirmation of it actually happening.

Until now, that is. Now, Jerry Bruckheimer has said clearly that the script is still in development, and the project is not, in fact, dead in the water.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, "Oh God, they’re all hard [to crack.] I think we’re getting very close on [Pirates 6], too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them. [Robbie's Pirates film is] alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story."

Female 'Pirates of the Caribbean' spinoff starring Margot Robbie not dead?

A new trailer for Damien Chazelle's next, the much-anticipated epic period comedy called 'Babylon', is out. The star-studded, glitzy film stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in lead roles. It is set in Los Angeles in the 1920s, and is described as a tale of "outsized ambition and outrageous excess". The new trailer promises a stunning-looking period piece.

Robbie's Nellie LaRoy is a carefree actress who would party all the time if she could. Beneath her devil-may-care attitude, however, she hides her many vulnerabilities. Robbie is once again tasked with playing a complex character, and once again she appears to be more than up to the task. Pitt's Jack Conrad is a huge star, who loves all the spotlight and attention he gets. His character is sort of a foil to LaRoy's depraved, always-partying, and drug-addled side of Hollywood.

The visuals look great, and the setting is extremely well-realised.

Diego Calva, Tobey Maguire, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li also star.

The film seems to be what you would get if you combined 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' and 'The Wolf Of Wall Street', and modified the resulting product a little. In short: a delicious, not-to-be-missed experience.

The 1920s Hollywood, the era when silent cinema gave way to 'talkies', is curiously unexplored by, well, Hollywood. So that is welcome too.

The official synopsis reads, "From Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood." 'Babylon' hits theatres on December 25.

A trailer for 'Babylon' is out. The epic period comedy-drama film is written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the filmmaker behind acclaimed movies like 'Whiplash', 'La La Land', and 'First Man'. For 'La La Land', Chazelle received an Oscar in the Best Director category. 'Babylon' has a truly formidable cast with names like Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart, and Tobey Maguire. The film is set in Los Angeles in the 1920s and is said to be a tale of "outsized ambition and outrageous excess". The trailer promises a handsome-looking, star-studded period piece that also looks like a lot of fun.

The peppy trailer introduces the major characters. We see Margot Robbie's Nellie LaRoy, who is a carefree woman who just wants to party and abhors paying taxes. Her partner in conversation is Diego Calva's Manny Torres, who appears to share her beliefs. Their conversation is interspersed with visuals of Brad Pitt's movie star Jack Conrad surrounded by spotlights and attention, and enjoying it.

Tobey Maguire also turns up. The film overall appears to be 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' fused with 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' in terms of visuals and themes. Like the Martin Scorsese film, it shows the debauchery that was prevalent in those times in Hollywood. The 1920s Hollywood, the era when silent cinema gave way to 'talkies', is curiously unexplored by, well, Hollywood. Finally, it seems to be receiving its due.
