You never know how things take a turn in the world of films but if there was something that Margot Robbie of Barbie was sure of, it was her faith in her film. Margot recently revealed that she was once engaged in an interaction with a producer who was backing Oppenheimer and that he told her that they should move their film, Barbie, to another date to avoid a clash with Christopher Nolan's directorial.

This revelation was made by Margot Robbie to Oppenheimer actor Cillian Murphy during a Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors,’ conversation presented by AIR. She revealed that she once got a call from Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven in which he asked her to change the Barbie release date so that it avoids a clash with Oppenheimer. She said, “One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me because we worked together on some other projects. And he was like, ‘I think you guys should move your date.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving our date. If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date.’ And he’s like, ‘We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving!'”

Both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer opened on the same day worldwide.

Margot Robbie also added in the chat that she thought that Oppenheimer and Barbie were a “really great pairing,” which is why she didn’t want to delay her film’s release date.

“It’s a perfect double billing…Clearly, the world agreed. Thank God,” Robbie added. “The fact that people were going and being like, ‘Oh, watch “Oppenheimer” first, then “Barbie.”‘ I was like, ‘See? People like everything.’ People are weird…I think they were also really excited by the filmmakers. People were itching for the next Chris Nolan film and itching for the next Greta Gerwig film.
Director Martin Scorsese recently addressed criticism of his film, The Wolf of Wall Street, in an interview with GQ. The movie, which is Scorsese's highest-grossing film to date despite its lengthy three-hour runtime, has faced backlash for its portrayal of Jordan Belfort, a morally ambiguous Wall Street stockbroker played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Scorsese's filmmaking approach has always been to present characters and stories without imposing a specific moral perspective on the audience. In the case of The Wolf of Wall Street, some critics accused the film of not taking a strong moral stance against Belfort's behaviour.

In the interview, Scorsese revealed that he was unaware of the heated debate surrounding the film. He mentioned that there were two distinct camps among critics: one that loved the film and another that was disappointed by the lack of a clear moral condemnation of Belfort's actions. Scorsese himself seemed unfazed by the criticism, stating that such moralistic attitudes are "beyond boring."

The film's backlash is somewhat of a departure from the traditional standards of cinema, particularly those enforced during the Hays Code era of the 1930s and '40s. This code mandated that criminal actions in movies must be punished, portrayed as unsympathetic, and explicitly labelled as immoral. Scorsese's approach aligns more with the modern cinematic trend where audiences are encouraged to think critically and form their own judgments about the characters and their actions.

While some critics praised Scorsese's refusal to dictate morality in the film, others found it lacking a moral center and accused it of reveling in the portrayal of excessive and immoral behavior. The criticism highlighted the ongoing debate within the cinematic world about the role of morality in storytelling.

What was The Wolf of Wall Street about?

It was a 2013 biographical black comedy film based on the memoir of the same name by Belfort. The film is set against the backdrop of the financial world of Wall Street and chronicles the life and escapades of Belfort. The story follows Belfort as he rises from a young and ambitious stockbroker to become the head of his own brokerage firm, Stratton Oakmont. The story primarily takes place in the late 1980s and early 1990s during a period of excessive wealth and decadence. Belfort and his partner, Donnie Azoff (played by Jonah Hill), engage in corrupt and morally reprehensible practices, defrauding investors through penny stock schemes and living a life of hedonism filled with drugs, parties, and extravagance.

Scorsese himself seemed unfazed by the criticism, stating that such moralistic attitudes are "beyond boring." The film's backlash is somewhat of a departure from the traditional standards of cinema, particularly those enforced during the Hays Code era of the 1930s and '40s. Margot Robbie joins SAG-AFTRA protest rally, earns praise from fans

Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' was released on July 21. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film is performing exceptionally well at the box office. Not just the big screen, the movie has also managed to spark a Barbie mania across the world. But will the refined version of 'Barbie' help Mattel improve its brand image?

Decoding the 'Barbie' mania | WION E-Club

There is just no stopping Barbie. More than a month after its release, the Greta Gerwig directorial is still breaking box office records. Now, the Margot Robbie-starrer has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing the $1.342 billion global earnings of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, securing its position as the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros' history. The film's domestic earnings have reached an impressive $592.8 million, with an additional $745.5 million collected from international markets. Barbie recently surpassed Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight as Warner Bros' biggest earner at the domestic box office.

Adding to an already big list of accomplishments, Barbie has overtaken The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the top-grossing title of 2023 in North America. With this trajectory, it's poised to outshine the global earnings of the same movie.

Looking ahead, Barbie has set its sights on an even loftier achievement: Surpassing the worldwide earnings of Frozen II, which stands at an impressive $1.43 billion. Barbie craze! Margot Robbie's film to become Warner Bros' highest-grossing film

Margot Robbie, the Australian actress who has taken Hollywood by storm with her talent and charisma in recent years with roles like Harley Quinn in DC movies and more recently Barbie in the movie of the same name, was almost a part of a different iconic project before she rose to fame. In a recent revelation, casting director Eric Dawson unveiled on Backstage’s podcast In the Envelope podcast how Robbie came close to landing a role in the second season of the hit anthology series, American Horror Story: Asylum. Although the role eventually eluded her, the encounter highlighted her star potential and set the stage for her meteoric rise in the entertainment industry.

Dawson shared his memory of Robbie's audition for American Horror Story: Asylum. He described the young actress's presence as magnetic, recounting, "Margot is probably one of my favourite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was just such a star. It was just crazy, her star appeal and when she walked in the room and her voice. Everything about it."

Despite narrowly missing out on the role within the acclaimed horror series, Dawson was certain that Robbie was destined for greatness. He reflected, "That was one of those things as a casting director you go, ‘This is a star. What do we do with her?' Then, immediately she started, just boom, boom, boom, and she was out of our sort of realm of possibility of hiring, but that’s really the fun part of casting, is seeing the people whose careers are just rising."

Everything about it." Despite narrowly missing out on the role within the acclaimed horror series, Dawson was certain that Robbie was destined for greatness. He reflected, "That was one of those things as a casting director you go, ‘This is a star. What do we do with her?' Then, immediately she started, just boom, boom, boom, and she was out of our sort of realm of possibility of hiring, but that’s really the fun part of casting, is seeing the people whose careers are just rising." When Margot Robbie auditioned for American Horror Story Asylum

A recent survey conducted by film tracking service The Quorum has highlighted the significant impact of the Margot Robbie-starrer movie Barbie on revitalising theatre attendance, as per Variety. The survey, which encompassed 1,800 ticket buyers of Barbie across the United States over the past three weeks, revealed intriguing insights into the post-pandemic cinema landscape. Remarkably, 11 per cent of the surveyed audience admitted to having difficulty recalling their last theatre experience prior to "Barbie." Equally intriguing, another 11 per cent revealed that Barbie marked their maiden return to a theatre since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Consequently, these findings indicate that nearly a quarter of the respondents — 22 per cent to be precise — likely bypassed notable post-pandemic blockbuster releases like Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick. Instead, they were swayed by the remarkable buzz and pervasive marketing campaign surrounding the Barbie phenomenon.

The Quorum, an organisation renowned for gauging the anticipation of upcoming films among potential moviegoers, extrapolated that this 22 per cent translated to approximately 9 million individuals who graced multiplexes solely for the experience of Barbie.

The survey also underscored that the Barbie experience rekindled viewers' fondness for the cinematic outing. Among those surveyed, a notable 40 per cent admitted that the encounter rekindled their passion for the cinematic experience, driving them to consider more regular visits to theatres. However, a substantial 45 per cent indicated that they desired to visit theatres more often but were hindered by financial constraints. This particular cohort contended that only a movie as captivating as Barbie would motivate them to return to cinemas.

Barbie brought back millions of first-time post-pandemic theatregoers: Survey

In Greta Gerwig's blockbuster film Barbie, Michael Cera takes on the role of Allan, a unique, weirdo character that adds a distinct flavour to the movie. However, Cera's inclusion in the film almost didn't come to be, if it weren't for a timely and determined effort on his part. In an interview with GQ, conducted prior to the onset of an actors' strike, Cera revealed the serendipitous nature of his casting. The process was a whirlwind, beginning with a call from his manager who gauged his availability for the Barbie project. Cera's manager initially assumed he wouldn't be interested due to the extended filming period in London.

Bill Maher, political commentator and the host of HBO's Real Time, has come down hard on Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, which stars Margot Robbie in the lead. Writing on X (earlier known as Twitter), he penned a lengthy critique of the movie, which recently exceeded the $1 billion mark in global box office earnings. He said that he had hoped the film would not be "preachy" or "man-hating". He added that the movie also propagates what he called a "#ZombieLie", explaining, “What is a Zombie Lie? Something that never was true, but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase revenues, e.g.); OR something that USED to be true but no longer is, but certain people pretend it’s still true."

"Barbie is this kind of #ZombieLie. Spoiler alert, Barbie fights the Patriarchy. Right up to the Mattel board who created her, consisting of 12 white men! The Patriarchy! Except there’s a Mattel board in real life, and it’s 7 men and 5 women. OK, not perfect even-steven, but not the way the board IN THE MOVIE – which takes place in 2023 – is portrayed. And not really any longer deserving of the word ‘patriarchy.’ Yes, there was one, and remnants of it remain – but this movie is so 2000-LATE," said Maher.

He added, "At one point the Barbies have to win over the Kens, and they are told to do it by pretending to act helpless and not know how to do stuff. Helen Gurley Brown called, she wants her premise back. Yes, that WAS a thing. I saw Barbie with a woman in her 30s who said, ‘I don’t know a single woman of any age who would act like that today.'”

Addressing the potential criticism of a man discussing the concept of the Patriarchy, Maher countered that he is aware of the prevailing world around him and uses available data to form his opinions. He pointed out that the actual Mattel board is reflective of a balanced representation of genders, closely mirroring the composition of corporate boards in the country. To Maher, his perspective aligns with current realities, and he dismissed those who disagree as clinging to outdated ideas.

“I know, I know, ‘How could I know about the patriarchy, I AM a man! That argument is so old and so silly. Of course, none of us can know exactly what others go through life, but I can see the world around me, and I can read data. The real Mattel board is a pretty close mirror of the country, where 45% of the 449 board seats filled last year in Fortune 500 companies were women. Truth is, I’m not the one who’s out of step – I’m living in the year we’re living in. Barbie is fun, I enjoyed it – but it IS a #ZombieLie. And people who don’t go along with zombie lies did not take some red pill – just staying true to CURRENT reality. Let’s live in the year we’re living in!" he said.

However, the movie's proponents argued that his interpretation might miss the point of creative storytelling. They contended that movies often exaggerate elements for dramatic effect, and while the Mattel board's portrayal might be an artistic choice, the broader themes of challenging stereotypes and promoting empowerment should be the primary focus.
What is Barbie all about?

The focal point of Barbie is the main character, the eponymous doll Barbie (or more precisely, the Stereotypical Barbie), who sets out on a journey of self-discovery in the actual world. This choice arises once she recognises slight imperfections in her once impeccable body and life. With her partner Ken by her side, they traverse through reality, encountering obstacles linked to traditional beauty standards and societal expectations. Alongside Barbie, Ken, and their owner, Sasha, tackle their uncertainties and the pressures imposed by society. This journey prompts a significant shift in the social framework of Barbieland.

What was Barbie all about?

Barbie revolves around the central character, the titular doll Barbie (or more accurately, the Stereotypical Barbie), embarking on a voyage of self-exploration into the real world. This decision comes after she becomes aware of minor flaws in her previously-flawless body and existence. Accompanied by Ken, her companion, they navigate through the real world, coming face to face with challenges related to conventional beauty norms and societal anticipations.

Alongside Barbie, Ken, and their owner, Sasha, tackle their uncertainties and the pressures imposed by society. This journey prompts a significant shift in the social framework of Barbieland.

1. Nostalgia but with a touch of contemporary cultural nuance

At the heart of the film's triumph lies the reimagining of a beloved cultural icon—the Barbie doll. For decades, Barbie has been more than just a toy; she has symbolised dreams, aspirations, and societal expectations. The film successfully tapped into this nostalgia but with a fresh and empowering perspective. By introducing imperfections into Barbie's life, the film dismantled the notion of an unattainable, picture-perfect existence, resonating with audiences young and old. In a time when conversations around self-acceptance, body positivity, and personal growth are more relevant than ever, the film's narrative struck a chord with viewers around the globe.

2. A timely and relevant story

Barbie ventured beyond the confines of a mere toy-inspired tale and delved into profound social and psychological themes. The central journey of Barbie and Ken into the real world acted as a metaphor for self-discovery and challenged societal norms. The exploration of beauty standards, societal expectations, and the internal struggles faced by the characters made the story thought-provoking.

3. A stellar ensemble cast

The star-studded cast, headlined by Robbie, contributed significantly to the film's appeal. With actors like Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell, the film boasted a diverse range of talent. The script, penned by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach, allowed every actor to bring something interesting to the story. Barbie released before the SAG-AFTRA strike and thus Gerwig and the actors were able to relentlessly promote the movie through interviews.

4. A strong directorial vision and authenticity

Gerwig's unique directorial voice breathed life into the film's characters and themes. Known for her exceptional work in films like Lady Bird and Little Women, she brought her signature blend of emotional depth, wit, and authenticity to Barbie. Her understanding of complex human emotions and her ability to draw multi-dimensional characters added layers of meaning to the story.

5. Ingenious global marketing and outreach

The success of Barbie was also a testament to a well-executed marketing strategy by Warner Bros that catered to a global audience. At one point it appeared the film had appropriated the colour pink, and everything that was even of a similar shade was said to be promoting the movie.

With the onset of spring in 2023, a flood of Barbie character posters inundated the scene, accompanied by the unveiling of a website named Barbie Selfie Generator. This platform allowed individuals to seamlessly incorporate their own selfies or chosen images into the format of the iconic Barbie character posters. The appearance of a large Barbie-themed box at theatres showcasing the movie presented an opportunity for visitors to participate in photo opportunities, showcasing their unique poses, social circles, and individual elements, all while promoting the blockbuster.

In such ways, the studio ingeniously incorporated the general public into the film's marketing campaign without even their awareness. It was brilliant and proved to be effective.

The film's message of empowerment and self-acceptance transcended cultural boundaries, making it relatable to audiences from different backgrounds. The marketing team capitalised on this universality by tailoring promotional materials to resonate with diverse sensibilities. Moreover, the involvement of the star-studded cast in promotional activities, along with engaging social media campaigns, helped generate buzz and anticipation before the film's release.

We do not have figures at the moment, but Barbie's association with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and the 'Barbenheimer' memes that flooded the internet likely helped both movies. The idea of viewing both movies as a double feature proved to be strangely appealing to moviegoers across the world, despite the fact that the films are vastly different in terms of tone.

6. Positive critical reception

And obviously, the film was received very well by critics. Acclaim certainly played a pivotal role in propelling Barbie to its billion-dollar success. Critics praised the film's bold narrative choices, compelling performances, and timely themes. The positive reviews not only attracted a discerning adult audience but also added an air of legitimacy to the film's message and artistic merit.

Barbie continues to shatter box office records, set to hit $1 billion by Monday

Australian singer Kylie Minogue has expressed her desire to have fellow Australian and Barbie actress Margot Robbie play her in a biopic about her life. When asked by E! News who she'd like to portray her on the big screen, Minogue replied, "Margot Robbie — in my dreams! She'd have the Australian accent down, that's for sure." Both Minogue and Robbie share a connection through their early careers on the show Neighbours. Minogue played Charlene Robinson from 1986 to 1988, while Robbie joined the soap as Donna Freedman in 2008. In addition to discussing her potential biopic, Minogue mentioned her musical collaborations and named Beyoncé and Rihanna as dream partners.

Kylie Minogue wants Margot Robbie to play her in a biopic: She'd have the Australian accent down

Marc Maron, comedian, actor, and podcaster, has come forward in strong support of Greta Gerwig's movie Barbie, which stars Margot Robbie in the lead role. In a TikTok video that lasted almost two minutes, Maron passionately praised the film as a "f**king masterpiece," a term he said he rarely uses lightly. He was evidently blown away by the movie's artistic excellence. “I saw Barbie and I thought it was a f**king masterpiece. And like, I don’t throw that word around lightly, but, Jesus Christ," he said. What particularly impressed Maron was the film's ability to cater to a broad audience while integrating progressive politics and fundamental feminist themes in a manner that was both amusing and well-executed.

“It’s like it does a fairly amazing thing to create a sort of broad-based entertainment product that applies to the entire spectrum. I think primarily of women. And then just seep it in progressive politics and basic feminism in a way that’s funny, informative and well-executed in a context that is completely engaging is fucking monumental," he said.

Barbie surpasses La La Land as Ryan Gosling's highest-grossing film. Here's how much it's earned

Barbie director Greta Gerwig has expressed excitement over her movie becoming a blockbuster. Starring Margot Robbie, the film is based on the iconic children's toy of the same name. It is breaking box office records left and right. It opened with a whopping $162 million haul in its domestic market and also set a new Warner Bros record for Monday's gross earnings. Gerwig told The New York Times that she intended to create an "anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic" film, and she's amazed by the glowing reception. As with every box office success, many are wondering whether the movie will get a sequel. With such numbers, studios usually insist on a sequel.

Will Barbie get a sequel? Despite discussions about a potential sequel, Gerwig is not currently considering it. She feels she has poured everything into this project and is not thinking about future ideas at this moment. “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.” Also Read: Revealed: The identity of the old woman on the bench in the Barbie movie On conservative backlash to Barbie Gerwig also addressed the conservative backlash against the movie, acknowledging that she didn't anticipate the degree of anger from right-wingers. She hopes the film serves as an invitation for everyone to let go of limiting gender stereotypes and find relief in engaging with the movie. Barbie makes history with $377mn worldwide debut, Oppenheimer also impresses

If you have watched Barbie over the weekend, you may have noticed a scene where Margot Robbie as Barbie shares a moment with an older woman on the bench as she arrives in the real world. There have been speculations about the actress who has played the older woman in the film and many have claimed that it is actually Barbara Handler who made a cameo. Barbara inspired the Barbie doll when it came out in 1959. But turns out the news was false. The stereotypical Barbie actually meets Ann Roth on the bench.

Ann Roth is an Oscar-winning costume designer and plays the older woman on the bench in the movie. Greta Gerwig is known to be friends with Roth and hence had approached her for the cameo.

Who is Barbara Handler?

Barbara Handler's parents - Elliot and Ruth Handler - co-founded Mattel with Harold Matson in 1945. In 1959, Ruth created the Barbie doll named after her daughter Barbara. Barbie went on to become one of the highest-selling toys of all time.

Ruth died in 2002 when she was 85 and actress Rhea Perlman plays her in the 2023 movie. Barbara is currently 82 years old and believably could have appeared as the older woman on the bench in Barbie, but instead, that role went to someone else.

Why was Ann Roth cast in Barbie?

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig explained to The New York Times that she cast Roth for her movie because the two were friends. Gerwig revealed she was looking for someone older to play the woman on the bench. The scene is a poignant one in the film where Robbie's Barbie remarks that Roth's character is beautiful, which she agrees to, and they share a laugh. It is a simple scene, but it embodies the heart of Barbie and how she wants to live a life like a human being.

Roth is an Oscar-winning costume designer who has worked on films such as Midnight Cowboy, 9 to 5, The World According to Garp, Working Girl, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Hours, The Village, Mamma Mia and many others. Revealed: The identity of the old woman on the bench in the Barbie movie

Greta Gerwig's Barbie is finally out and it lives up to the hype. Watch Shomini Sen's review on Critically Speaking to know more.

Critically Speaking: Margot Robbie's Barbie is funny and clever

Trust Greta Gerwig reverses an age-old narrative over its head and makes a clever commentary on it. In Barbie, Greta and her husband Noah Baumbach, who serves as the co-writer of the film, take the iconic doll and its manufacturer Mattel in a satire that not just questions patriarchy but misogyny, societal stereotypes, and more. The end result is woke - sometimes too woke for good - a story that packs in humour, and fun in a Barbie world.

Margot Robbie plays the stereotypical Barbie living the perfect life in Barbie land. Life in this land is pink, perfect and very plastic. The land has Barbie as president (Issa Rae), all the 12 seats in Supreme Court are taken up by Barbie, Barbies win Nobel Prize and basically run the show. The Kens on the other hand just exist.

Trouble starts when Barbie (Robbie) has an existential crisis one night and the next morning things begin to malfunction. Her feet are no longer arched, she has a patch of cellulite visible and she is thinking of death. On the behest of other Barbies, she visits the Weird Barbie (Kate McKninon) who tells her that she needs to visit the real world and meet the person who is playing with her in order to get things back to how they were.

Barbie embarks on a journey to the real world and Ken (Ryan Gosling) comes along. When the two reach the real world, they are of course in for a shock. While Barbie finally understands the term male gaze and is uncomfortable at being constantly gazed at, Ken discovers patriarchy and horses. He also realises that his abs grab eyeballs more in the real world than it ever got in Barbie land.

Ken heads back almost immediately to Barbie land to mirror it in accordance with the real world. Barbie on the other hand meets Gloria (America Ferrera) in the real world and discovers that it is because of her that she has been experiencing all the doubts in her head.

Gloria is a working mother who works with Mattel, as a clerk. Mattel, the original manufacturer of the iconic doll has all men heading the place with Will Ferrel leading the organisation. Trouble ensues when Will and his men chase Barbie in order to put her back in a box and fix things like they were. Meanwhile, Barbie takes Gloria and her teenage daughter to Barbie land to show how perfect the land is but is for a shock to discover that Ken has replicated the real world there with Barbies playing domesticated side aids to Kens.

Entirely satirical, the film then becomes a battle of sexes where first Barbie has the upper hand and Ken suffers from an identity crisis and then the tables turn until a human (in this case Gloria) jolts Barbie out of her doom and urges her to take control of the Barbie land.

With several references to pop culture, Barbie is truly Meta. Here the head of Mattel talks of dolls and business and little girls in between getting tickles from his colleagues - all dressed in corporate suits. The story has dolls being perceived as humans on several occasions and humans themselves transporting to doll land in order to fix things or maybe delve deeper into inner conflicts. It's the thin line that Greta very skillfully treads on with the film's narrative. Where everything is plastic and fake and yet very real.

The jokes land more in the first half of the film and Gosling and Simu Liu (also just a Ken) share a crackling chemistry as competitors of Barbie's attention. In fact, Gosling gets a meaty role to play. Not just beefed up, but Gosling is so self-assured in his version of the self-obsessed, brawny Ken that it's a delight to watch him on screen. His is a tougher role than Robbie's and it could have been totally over the top but Gosling plays it with absolute ease- making Ken tragic and comical. Robbie as stereotypical Barbie is just as good but her character arc is far less than Gosling's and hence the scope to show her talent is also limited.

Greta and Baumbach though constantly remind the viewer that it's a satire and by the second half, some of the jokes don't quite land the way they should. It becomes too woke by the end of it and pink and the plastic then gets on to you.

The sets are praiseworthy and the makers also bring in nostalgia by showing some of the discontinued dolls in the Barbie land. There is Midge, a pregnant Barbie, there is growing up Skipper, whose bosom increased every time someone lifted her arms and Sugardaddy Ken. Some of the Barbie sets and dreamhouses also are incorporated in the film - giving it the authentic Barbie look.

I would still say that the film very smartly shows how society is and humanises the iconic doll. For decades Barbie has been one of the most popular toys for young girls, setting unrealistic standards of beauty. Sure, Mattel has reinvented the doll and made every girl believe that they can be whatever they want to be - just like their favourite doll, but the narrative of everything being overtly perfect has also done damage to several. Greta, in that sense, spins the narrative and adds a layer of cynicism to Barbie land to show how things are in real. Flawed, depressed, and definitely not perfect- even though the plastic remains constant.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Barbie review: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling's film is smart, funny and very woke

Did you ever wonder why Hollywood star Margot Robbie is dressing like Barbie even on the red carpet or why Indian actor Alia Bhatt is spotted in stunning sarees for the promotions of her upcoming film Rocky or Rani ki Prem Kahani? If yes, then the next story is just for you. Take a look.

A-Listers pay sartorial nods to their roles with method dressing

Margot Robbie, who is not just the main star but also the producer of the Barbie movie, took on the task of convincing Warner Bros that her vision for the film would lead to financial success. She confidently expressed during pitch meetings that she believed the movie had the potential to generate $1 billion at the worldwide box office. To achieve this success, she emphasised the importance of having writer-director Greta Gerwig on board, making a strong case that pairing a big idea with a visionary director had proven lucrative for studios in the past. In her green-light meeting, Robbie drew parallels to successful projects like "dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg," using examples that had been both extraordinary and financially rewarding for the studios over the years. With Gerwig at the helm, she believed Barbie could achieve similar heights.

Margot Robbie promised Warner Bros Barbie will earn $1bn: Maybe I was overselling

Lights, camera, Barbie! After an incredible 64-year journey as Mattel's beloved fashion doll, Barbie is finally making her highly anticipated live-action debut on the big screen this Friday. Directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach, Barbie is a live-action fantasy comedy starring Margot Robbie in the lead role. The film features a huge starry ensemble cast with names like America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, and Will Ferrell. Barbie has already received highly positive reviews with a score of 89 per cent on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads, "Barbie is a visually dazzling comedy whose meta humor is smartly complemented by subversive storytelling."

The excitement is palpable, and fans worldwide have been eagerly counting down the days. But this isn't just any ordinary debut; it's a milestone for a brand that has become an integral part of popular culture and has left an indelible mark on generations of children. Barbie's road to the movies has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with more twists and turns than a soap opera plot.

Barbie movie's long road to fruition

Let's go back to 2009 when whispers of a live-action Barbie film first emerged. Universal Pictures showed interest in bringing the iconic doll to life, but the project never progressed beyond the initial discussions. Next up was Sony, which eagerly grabbed the opportunity to bring Barbie to the silver screen. The excitement was soaring when they announced a release date for 2017, with Academy Award winner Diablo Cody penning the script. However, despite Cody confessed that cracking the perfect storyline for Barbie proved to be as elusive as finding Barbie's elusive Ken. "I failed so hard at that project. I was literally incapable of writing a Barbie script. God knows I tried," she said. Well, Cody, we are no strangers to writer's block, either.

Enter comedienne Amy Schumer. Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele came up with a fresh and humorous storyline. In their version, Barbie, the ambitious inventor, finds herself expelled from Barbieland for not fitting the mould of "perfection." However, even with Schumer's brilliance, creative disagreements struck again, and the project got shelved faster than one could say "dream house."

Warner Bros and Greta Gerwig enter the picture

But the show must go on, and the baton was eventually passed to Warner Bros, determined to give Barbie the spotlight she deserves. And we have a Barbie movie.

Mattel to blame for all the delay in Barbie movie?

As we saw, the journey to bring Barbie to life on the big screen had its fair share of setbacks. Part of the reason for the lengthy journey was Mattel's fierce protectiveness of its iconic doll. When Pixar approached them about featuring Barbie in Toy Story, Mattel was cautious. They wanted Barbie to be portrayed as nothing less than perfection. However, they eventually saw the beauty in the tribute to toys, and Barbie made her appearance in Toy Story 2, which probably only helped the Barbie brand.

Remember the catchy tune "Barbie Girl" by Aqua? Mattel wasn't thrilled about the portrayal of Barbie in the song (it had sexual undertones, if you must know) and sought to shut it down. But the courts ruled in favour of artistic expression, and the song continued to resonate with audiences, regardless of Mattel's initial concerns.

Barbie in animation

Though Barbie's live-action debut may be her first, she's no stranger to the world of animation. Since 2001, Barbie has been a computer-animated superstar, featuring in over 40 films as per Collider where she's embarked on epic adventures and explored more worlds than a space explorer.
