<p>Margot Robbie reached Seoul on Sunday (July 2) to attend her film <em>Barbie's </em>Korean premiere. The presenters of the event surprised the actress with a special Barbie-themed cake,&nbsp;topped with what appeared to be a bejewelled tiara and a single pink candle,&nbsp;to mark her 33rd birthday.</p>

<p>Joined by director Greta Gerwig and co-star America Ferrera, the actress had a jolly birthday celebration on stage as she promoted her much-anticipated film, slated to release on July 21.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paying homage to two Barbies from the 1990s,&nbsp;Margot wore two Versace looks at the Seoul event. The fashionista&nbsp;re-created the 1985 Day-to-Night Barbie's look right down to the doll's bedazzled phone and&nbsp;white hat.</p>

<p>Later, she unveiled&nbsp;Barbie's evening look by removing her pink blazer and revealing a hot pink tulle skirt paired with a sparkly pink top.</p>

But as per projections, Margot Robbie-led upcoming <em>Barbie </em>movie is on track to defeat Christopher Nolan's biopic-thriller <em>Oppenheimer </em>at the box office. As per Deadline, <em>Barbie</em>, based on Mattel's fashion toy, is tracking for an impressive sum of $80 to $100 million in its opening weekend. This is double the projected collections of <em>Oppenheimer</em>. For months now, film buffs have been eagerly awaiting the release of both movies to see which one comes out on top. While <em>Barbie </em>was always considered to have&nbsp;more value for commercial moviegoers, it is wise never to underestimate Nolan, whose movie releases are events unto themselves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thus far, though, it appears the Greta Gerwig directorial will win. Both movies, it must be noted, have a production budget of $100 million.</p>

Barbie and its problematic past For years, Mattel- the maker of the Barbie doll, has been criticised for making the most popular doll in the world stereotypical. Critics have debated that the doll's appearance has been sexualised and it promotes a certain body type among young girls which is unrealistic. A typical Barbie doll has a narrow waist, a full chest, and long slender arms and legs. The doll is always perched on her toes- ready to slip into heels. When it was first introduced in 1959, it was typically blonde haired and adult bodied- inspired from a a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. Criticisms of Barbie are often centered around concerns that children consider Barbie a role model and will attempt to emulate her. One of the most common criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for a young woman, leading to a risk that girls who attempt to emulate her will become anorexic. With changing times, Mattel has consciously tried to change the image of Barbie dolls to make them more relatable for young girls. The mould of the doll too has undergone significant change to make Barbie look more realistic-thereby promoting a more positive body image. Over the years, Barbie has adopted various professions and ethnicity. We have a black Barbie, a doctor Barbie, and an Indian Barbie to name a few. While the Barbie doll has gone through changes, its male counterpart Ken has remained more or less the same. Greta Gerwig's land of Barbie The exact plot of the Barbie film is not known so far but the character posters seem to address a long-standing debate on how good an influence these dolls are on young girls. Gerwig seems to have used Barbie as a metaphor to represent the modern woman - who are known for more than their looks. Barbie has been considered an example of how women should be and so Gerwig's Barbies have various attributes and are not just sexual objects of desire for men. Notice how the men are depicted in the poster? They look brawny, and plastic and have no defined attributes. Women are typically known to juggle multiple roles in life. They have - for years- balanced both work and home beautifully while men are typically known to just achieve great heights professionally. Gerwig's sly dig on the societal imbalance did not go unnoticed on the internet. The social media trend The internet caught on to the Barbie trend almost instantly and made its own version of it- often equating real-life couples and on-screen popular couples to Barbie and Ken. It is set in Los Angeles in the 1920s, and is described as a tale of "outsized ambition and outrageous excess". The new trailer promises a stunning-looking period piece.</p>

<p>Robbie's Nellie LaRoy is a carefree actress who would party all the time if she could. Beneath her devil-may-care attitude, however, she hides her many vulnerabilities. Robbie is once again tasked with playing a complex character, and once again she appears to be more than up to the task. Pitt's Jack Conrad is a huge star, who loves all the spotlight and attention he gets. His character is sort of a foil to LaRoy's depraved, always-partying, and drug-addled side of Hollywood.</p>
