West Indies defeated England by 17 runs in the final fifth T20I on Monday (January 31) to clinch the five-match T20I series 3-2. The hosts went on to defend a total of 179 runs against the Moeen Ali-led side to bounce back to winning ways after losing the penultimate game by 34 runs.

West Indies were under significant pressure heading into the series after a disappointing show in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. The Pollard-led side had failed to make it to the knockout stages at the showpiece event before rumours of an alleged rift between Pollard and some players in the team surfaced.

However, the hosts kept the controversies aside and turned up in the final T20I to clinch an emphatic win against England. Skipper Pollard was delighted with the win and decided to surprise the fans by starting his post-match interview by singing a song.

The superstar all-rounder sang a few lines of the famous song 'Solid as a rock' written by Jamaican musician Sizzla.&nbsp;"I say, they can’t keep a good man down. Always keep a smile when they want me to frown.," Pollard was heard singing on the mic as he began his post-match interview.

In reply, England were bundled out for 162 runs as they fell short in the run chase by 17 runs to lose the game and concede the series. James Vince (55) and Sam Billings (41) played two brilliant knocks but their efforts were not enough for the visitors, who kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

While Jason Holder continued his fine form with the ball with a five-wicket haul, Akeal Hosein picked up four wickets to wrap up a comfortable win for the hosts.

With 20 needed for Eoin Morgan-led England in the&nbsp;final over, Pollard gave the ball to former captain Jason Holder. Holder didn't disappoint as he became the first West Indies bowler to claim a hat-trick in the shortest format of the game.

Holder wasn't done yet as he removed Adil Rashid, bowling a cross-seam delivery outside off-stump, before getting the better of&nbsp;Saqib Mahmood on the penultimate delivery to also complete a five-fer. In response, wicket-keeper Tom Banton (73) and Phil Salt (57) scored half-centuries but England could manage only 204/9 in 20 overs to fall short by 20 runs. Romario Shepherd was the best West Indies bowler on the night as he claimed 3/59 off his four overs while skipper Kieron Pollard picked 2/31 off his full quota. 
 
England won the toss and elected to bowl and they got early success when opener Brandon King (10) was bowled by pacer George Garton (1/57) with the score at 11 in the second over. Shai Hope too departed early, caught by Banton off Liam Livingstone for four.

Powell stormed to his century off 51 deliveries as West Indies raced to 200 in the 19th over. In reply, Jason Roy and Tom Banton gave England a good start as they raced to 61/1 in the powerplay despite losing Roy (19) with the score at 33. Roy, who struck two sixes in his 16-ball knock was caught by Jason Holder off Shepherd. 
 
Banton went on to score a 39-ball 73 but England kept losing wickets at the other end. Though a 24-ball 57 by Phil Salt raised their hopes and took them close to the West Indies total in the end they fell short by 20 runs.

Kemar Roach was called up to the West Indies one-day squad for the first time in nearly two-and-half years on Wednesday with the fast bowler returning for next month`s three-match series against India, Cricket West Indies said. 
The 33-year-old from Barbados has been a regular in West Indies test squads but played the last of his 92 one-dayers against India at Port of Spain in August 2019.

"Kemar Roach is one of our leading fast bowlers and&nbsp;we believe we need bowlers upfront to get early wicket," newly-appointed chief selector Desmond Haynes said in a statement. Beginning on Feb. 6, West Indies will play three one-dayers in Ahmedabad to be followed by an equal number of Twenty20 Internationals in Kolkata. The Twenty20 squad will be announced on Friday.

The BCCI announced 18-member ODI and T20I squads for Team India's white-ball series versus Kieron Pollard-led West Indies on Wednesday (January 26). As it was reported earlier that Rohit Sharma had passed the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) Bengaluru, Hitman has returned to the squad after missing the entire South Africa tour. Rohit was appointed as the white-ball captain in early December 2021, however, he missed leading the side in the three ODIs in South Africa due to hamstring injury. Nonetheless, he has returned as Rohit will gear up to play his first ODI series since early 2021.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, however, remained unfit and couldn't return&nbsp;to the line-up, failing to recovering from his knee injury.&nbsp;Selectors didn't include Hardik Panya as well, in any of the squads, as they aren't fully confident of his ability to deliver as an all-rounder due to fitness concerns. R Ashwin, meanwhile, is not in any squads&nbsp;for being unavailable for selection and the offie is undergoing treatment. Bhuvneshwar Kumar held onto his T20I spot&nbsp;but isn't in the scheme of things for ODIs.

In addition, there are some big updates with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami being rested. Limited-overs vice-captain KL Rahul will be available from the second ODI onwards whereas spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel will feature only in the T20Is.

The biggest talking point is the addition of some domestic and IPL star players such as Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi. Hooda, Harshal Patel are&nbsp;named in the ODI and T20I squad, respectively,&nbsp;whereas Bishnoi is part of both ODIs and T20Is. Kuldeep Yadav also makes a return to the ODI setup. Pacers Md Siraj and&nbsp;Avesh Khan&nbsp;have been backed for both the white-balls series whereas Prasidh Krishna is part of the 50-over squad.&nbsp;Nonetheless, there was no room for Himachal's star Rishi Dhawan, who has had a stellar run in the domestic circuit of late.

India will lock horns with West Indies in three ODIs and equal number of T20Is in early February,&nbsp;starting on the 6th. The ODIs will be held in Ahmedabad and the T20Is will take place in Kolkata. The BCCI had recently revised the schedule, to not have the ODIs clash with the IPL 2022 mega auction, and also narrowed down the total venues from six to two cities due to Covid-19 crisis.

Not many years ago, they were called the dark horses heading into any big T20 tournament, but West Indies shun the tag under Daren Sammy's captaincy and became a force to reckon with in world cricket. The firepower in their batting line-up coupled with the presence of numerous all-rounders in the squad saw the men from Caribbean become the world-beaters in the shortest format.

The quality in their squad was no different this time around as well, as the two-time champions&nbsp;headed into this year's T20 World Cup as everyone's second favourites. They were no more being addressed as the underdogs and were clear contenders to successfully defend the coveted title and make it a hat-trick of triumphs.

However, they had an abysmal campaign finishing last in the Group 1 to miss out on a spot in the semi-final and expose the shortcomings which had been in the making for long. Despite having a fine blend of youth and experience, West Indies were left exposed at the big stage and could do little to hide the evident struggles in the side.

Kieron Pollard's men got off to a woeful start with a shattering defeat against England and could never really bounce back as they managed only one victory in their remaining four matches to finish fifth with just two points. Their abysmal campaign also marked an era in West Indies cricket as Dwayne Bravo retired from international cricket while Chris Gayle all but confirmed he might never turn up in T20Is again.

1) Misfiring batters

West Indies are blessed with some of the most explosive batters in world cricket. They have a batting line-up capable of destroying bowling attacks at will in any game. With the likes of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Evin Lewis, Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer headlining the batting line-up, Windies were expected to bulldoze teams while taking their bowling attacks apart. But that wasn't the case in the UAE.

The openers failed to provide good&nbsp;starts consistently while the middle-order remained non-existent throughout the tournament as the batters failed to fire as a unit. Lewis and Hetmyer did produce a couple of sublime knocks but barring them, the rest of the batters filed to live up to the expectations.

Despite having a batting line-up with the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Jason Holder turning up at no. 8 and 9, West Indies failed to captalise and there failure with the bat was one of the biggest reasons behind their shambolic campaign which saw them win just one out of five matches in the tournament.

2) Lack of&nbsp;genuine pacers

While both Jason Holder and Dwayne Bravo can do the job with the ball in the T20s and have a proven record when it comes to the shortest format, the lack of genuine fast bowlers haunted West Indies at the T20 World Cup 2021. Veteran Ravi Rampaul, who made his comeback in the squad for the showpiece event, managed only two wickets in four appearances for the side.

Left-arm pacer Obed McCoy was in the bowling line-up in the opener against England but was replaced by Jason Holder after getting injured. Oshane Thomas was left to warm the bench for the entire tournament while the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Alzarri Joseph were not even picked in the squad.

3) Spinners failed to step up

While the lack of a genuine pacer cost West Indies dearly in the T20 World Cup 2021, the spinners in the squad failed to make the most of the chances coming their way and were far from impressive. Akeal Hossein and Hayde Walsh were the two spinners in the squad and both of them collectively managed to pick only five wickets throughout the tournament.

While opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (4) was dismissed for cheap by Trent Boult in what was a superb spell with the new ball, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali scored 50 and 58 respectively to take CSK to 112 in just 10 overs.
