April 24, 2023 was a special day for India but it was doubly special for Mumbai Indians. The day not just marked the great Sachin Tendulkar turning 50, it also marked the 10-year anniversary of Rohit Sharma captaining Mumbai Indians for the first time ever.

As the Mumbai Indians return to the Wankhede Stadium to take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, the team and coaching staff spoke about captain Hitman Rohit Sharma’s decade at the helm.

Kieron Pollard, the team’s batting coach and one of the players in the MI setup, when Rohit took over captaincy in the middle of the season in 2013, said, “He’s grown as a leader. I mean he’s grown into leadership. Obviously, it was entrusted onto him in 2013 in the middle of a season. He was still pretty young at that point in time.”

Pollard said that in spite of being young when he first took charge, Rohit was a quick learner and always showed leadership potential. “That shows you that a person has a great acumen of what he can accomplish and we are lucky to have him as a leader. He has a wealth of experience, so it’s a matter of tapping into that and continuing to see him grow.”

Terming Rohit’s career so far as “incredible”, bowling coach Shane Bond emphasised the impact that Rohit has had as a personality. “He’s such a big personality around our group, on and off the field and particularly in leading this team to where we are now, he has done a brilliant job.”

Suryakumar Yadav, said that Rohit’s numbers as captain speak for themselves and his journey with MI has been an incredible story. “Here we are in his 10th year as captain. So obviously 10 years as captain, that too for a franchise like Mumbai Indians. I think it is a very, very big achievement. It’s a story in itself. He’s brought so much glory for the franchise, winning five trophies under his captaincy.”

Ishan Kishan highlighted Rohit’s contribution to the team as captain, “Winning the Championship five times as a Captain is a great achievement. I know how he is as a captain, he’s done so much for the team.”

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green credited Rohit as a key factor in the team’s legacy, saying, “The success that Mumbai have had, a lot of that is to do with him.”

Rohit’s way of dealing with youngsters and the way he conducts himself in a team environment make him a great leader, feels fielding coach James Pamment. “A great strength of his is that he encourages the young Indian players very well. Captains just know how to pull the strings and that’s one of the things Rohit has done extremely well from being a very young captain when he first won the championship to maturing in the job. In a big competition like this, he’s got a nice manner about him,” Pamment said.

IPL 2023: MI's new batting coach Kieron Pollard ready for new season, says 'words really can't describe...'

Mumbai Indians (MI) are prepared to make some smart acquisitions at the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction after releasing as many as 13 players from their existing squad. MI have parted ways with the legendary Kieron Pollard, who announced his retirement from the IPL hours before the retention deadline, and Australian star Daniel Sams among others.

The five-time champions have managed to retain their core group of players and are set to be stronger next season with the much-anticipated return of England pacer Jofra Archer, who missed last season due to his recovery from an injury. MI will also head into the new season with a new head coach - Mark Boucher.

Pollard is the only player released by Mumbai Indians who was among their four retentions last year. MI had retained the West Indies all-rounder for Rs 6 crore (INR 60 million) but will now head into the mini-auction with a larger purse courtesy of his decision to retire.

Apart from retired Pollard, MI have released a total of four overseas players and eight domestic payers, including the likes of Jaydev Unadkat, Basil Thampi, and Anmolpreet Singh among others.

Virat, Rohit's barren run to MI-CSK's mighty fall: 5 surprising elements from IPL 2022's league stage

IPL 2022 becomes the first-ever season where both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have not qualified for the playoffs. In IPL 2016, both teams were also not part of the playoffs, however, CSK didn't feature back due to their two-year suspension in the spot-fixing scandal. Thus, it surely is the end of a magnificent era.

The MS Dhoni-starrer defending champions CSK ended at the ninth position in the points table. On the other hand, five-time winners and IPL's most successful team Mumbai couldn't avoid the wooden spoon despite a winning end to their forgettable campaign. Both sides returned with four victories and as many as ten defeats each. In fact, this was also the first time both franchises endured nine, or more, defeats in a season. In a nutshell, it can be said that two toppers fell flat and occupied the last two positions in the overall standings as other teams have surely mastered the art of winning big moments against them. However, the bigger question remains -- is MI-CSK's drubbing really a shocker? Well, it was always on the cards.

Many connoisseurs of the game might be quick to point out that the 'law of averages' was always going to bite the two famed sides. However, more than that CSK-MI's muddled approach, questionable team selections, playing styles, strategies, etc. were some notable reasons for their massive downfall.

1) Poor approach to the mega auction: Prior to the season, MI-CSK's team management's approach remained below par. After letting go of some big names in their roster, MI only managed to re-buy Ishan Kishan. Their replacements for the Pandya brothers, Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult, etc. were never really impressive (after including Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith, etc.). The Men in Blue also didn't purchase a solid spinner to spearhead the middle-overs. Murugan Ashwin did impress, however, he was also taken to the cleaners during some high-scorers. CSK, on the other hand, re-bought their core players, who seem to be well past their prime. It was an auction to look ahead, however, CSK's conservative approach sealed their fate then and there.

One might argue that CSK did pick young guns such as Mukesh Choudhary, Maheesh Theeshana, Simranjit Singh, etc., nonetheless, they never cared to properly rebuild their bowling unit. Either they had international bowlers woefully out of form, or only good to chip in with few overs, or it turned out to be too much reliance on youngsters in Deepak Chahar's absence.

2) Captaincy and team management woes: CSK isn't a team that makes headlines for captaincy woes and reports of a rift between a player, or players, and team management. This season saw them tick off both the boxes. Firstly, if Dhoni was sure to give up captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja much before the season started, Jadeja still looked like a fish out of the water. His approach was half-baked whereas, in some crunch games, he seemed out of the picture with Dhoni leading the charge. Lastly, when Jadeja relinquished captaincy and Dhoni returned to the post officially, reports of a rift between CSK team management and Jadeja took precedence. Even if the reports have been quashed completely, something was surely not right in the way things were handled in the Yellow Army camp.

3) Dubious selections and strategies: Both MI and CSK have been successful as they follow a similar template, i.e. backing their group of players and accomodating a change in strategy when needed. However, IPL 2022 saw both teams make some surprising calls in terms of team selection and erring in strategies. While CSK admitted to have not read the pitch properly on a few occasions (read Dhoni's post-match comments after their second loss to Gujarat Titans), they didn't back Devon Conway after his failure on debut. MI, on the other hand, dropped Tim David -- who was roped in for INR 82.5 million -- after a few flop shows. Similarly, MI didn't go all-out in the usage of Jasprit Bumrah with him not opening the bowling in several matches. Meanwhile, CSK's rotation of bowlers and top order's timid approach never saw them coming to their usual best. During Jadeja's captaincy, the rotation of bowlers was also not up to the mark.

These factors led to both CSK and MI failing to emerge on top in several close encounters (versus Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, etc.). There was utter chaos, a lack of role clarity and imbalance among batters and bowlers, especially at the initial stages, to confirm both sides' early exit.

4) Lack of form, injury to key players ruining it all: To add salt to their wounds, Chennai and Mumbai's star players never really stood tall. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. never threatened opposition camps with their consistency or form. Bumrah wasn't among wickets at regular intervals, barring a game where he ended with a five-fer, whereas Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, and Robin Uthappa did their best but it wasn't enough.

MI and CSK's big buys also underperformed. While Ishan, the most expensive player of this year's mega auction, ended with 400-plus runs, he struck at 121.11. On the other hand, CSK missed the services of Chahar, who remains injured and out of action. Injuries to Jadeja-Suryakumar Yadav in the fag end of the league stage also hurt the wounded CSK and MI line-up.

Hence, both CSK and MI are deservingly out of the playoffs race. As the two are highly successful in IPL, expect them to bounce back sooner than later. However, both MI and CSK need to go back to the drawing board to rethink their approach, and playing style, revamp next year and be more ruthless as the tournament is now much more difficult to crack with the addition of two new teams.

IPL 2022: How MS Dhoni's CSK and Rohit Sharma-led MI's debacle was always on the cards

The El Clasico of IPL returns as the five-time champions and bottom-lying Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to lock horns with the arch-rivals MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 58 of IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (May 12), at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Exactly three years back, Rohit Sharma's MI franchise had beaten Dhoni-starrer Chennai by a run in IPL 2019 final to win their fourth title. This time around, the Mumbai outfit will be desperate to return to winning ways and also end CSK's playoff hopes with a win on Thursday evening. For the unversed, MI were the first team to be out of the playoffs race and if they manage to settle scores with CSK this time around, following their close loss to the Yellow Army earlier this season, it will also end Dhoni & Co.'s hopes of progressing ahead. Hence, a lot is riding on this battle despite both sides languishing at the bottom.

Talking about both teams' form, MI won two in a row after eight successive defeats. However, they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 52 runs in their previous encounter. On the other hand, CSK have had some change of fortunes ever since Dhoni returned as their captain. Since then, they have won twice and lost one clash. In their last outing, Chennai defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by a whopping 92-run margin and will hope for another big win to bolster their NRR and keep playoff hopes alive.

Match prediction for CSK vs MI encounter: The toss at the Wankhede has always been crucial. While captains have largely preferred chasing, only thrice out of 15 games has a winning captain opted to bat first at this venue. Out of those three instances, totals have been defended twice, hence, batting first is also not a bad option here. Nonetheless, the toss will remain critical. Will MI rely on birthday boy and CSK's nemesis Kieron Pollard to upset CSK's chances? A close and moderate-scoring contest on the cards!!!

CSK vs MI, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians clash?

Mumbai Indians' (MI) struggles have been well documented in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. The five-time champions have managed just two wins in ten matches so far this season and are currently lying at the bottom of the table with their playoffs hopes already quashed.

While the form of their openers and their struggling bowling attack have been among the biggest concerns for MI this season, Rohit Sharma & Co. have also suffered due to the woeful form of star all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Pollard has been abysmal with both the bat and the ball failing to make an impact for his team.

The West Indies all-rounder, who has been one of MI's longest servants and has only played for the five-time champions in his IPL career so far, has not been among the runs and has bowled occasionally. In MI's last game against Gujarat Titans on Friday, Pollard managed only 4 runs off 14 balls after coming out to bat at number 5.

If not for Tim David's quickfire 44 off 21 balls, Pollard's inability to rotate the strike could have cost MI the game. David's cameo helped MI post 177 runs on the board in 20 overs and win the game by 5 runs to bag their second win of the season. Amid Pollard's poor run, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has made a bold claim on the all-rounder's future in the remainder of the season.

Chopra believes Pollard's IPL 2022 campaign is now over and that the West Indies all-rounder will not play again for Mumbai Indians this season. Chopra said Pollard can make way for young Dewald Brevis, who had impressed for MI in his first few games this season.

"Tilak Varma got run out but before that Kieron Pollard got out. That's an interesting one, I feel Kieron Pollard will not play any further this year, that's it, they won't play him anymore because Dewald Brevis is sitting outside and Tim David is doing well," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"Don't know why they didn't play a punt on Tim David earlier. They had kept this six-hitting machine sitting outside for a long time.
Mumbai Indians (MI) are yet to get off the mark in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they continue to endure a forgetful campaign this year. Rohit Sharma & Co. have lost their first eight matches in a row in what has been a disastrous start for the five-time champions.

Mumbai Indians slipped to their eighth successive defeat in their last game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI failed to chase down the target of 169 runs as they were restricted to 132/8 in 20 overs by the LSG bowlers, who produced an excellent combined effort.

Krunal Pandya was the pick of the bowlers for LSG as he picked up a three-wicket haul in the game, including the prized scalp of Kieron Pollard.
Not only this, but Dhawan also entered the elusive 6000-run club in IPL history. The swashbuckling left-hander was just two runs away from entering the elite club, which comprises only one more member in Kohli (6,402). Dhawan had amassed 5,998 runs at an average of 34.67 and a strike rate of 126.65, along with two centuries, before the CSK encounter.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have been struggling to get off the mark in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. With eight defeats in their first eight matches this season, MI have endured the worst start by any team in the history of the league. No other team has lost more than six matches at the start of the season.

MI slipped to their eighth successive defeat on Sunday (April 24) after failing to chase down a target of 169 runs against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After skipper KL Rahul's magnificent hundred helped LSG post 168 runs on the board, their bowlers proved too good for the struggling MI batters.

While skipper Rohit Sharma returned to form with 39 off 31 balls, the likes of Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard continued their rough patch with the willow. While Kishan was dismissed after scoring just 8 off 20 balls, Pollard managed 19 off 20 deliveries and stayed out in the middle till the final over of the run-chase but failed to take his team over the line.

Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra criticised Pollard for his poor show so far this season and claimed MI pacer Jaydev Unadkt seems to be scoring more runs than the star all-rounder. Unadkat has scored 59 runs for MI in five matches this season while Pollard has managed only 115 runs in eight matches.

"Kieron Pollard's bat is not striking the ball at all. Whatever he does, he is going at run-a-ball only. Quite a few times, it seems Jaydev Unadkat is hitting more than him. This is the reality where this team is standing," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Chopra also shared his views on the slump in Kishan's form this season. The left-hander had made an impressive start to his campaign in IPL 2022 before bagging a string of low-key scores. Kishan was caught out bizarrely after a slow start against LSG on Sunday.

"Ishan Kishan's bat is not at all hitting the ball. It is worth seeing that a player's confidence can go so low. You are getting tears in your eyes when you see the guy is not able to bat. He was trying and the way he got out, it cannot get worse than that. What was that? Rohit Sharma was playing well, he played a bad shot to get out," said Chopra.

Mumbai Indians have lost their first eight games in a row and their hopes of making it to the playoffs this season are all but over with the horror start. The five-time champions still have six matches left to play this year and will hope to spark a turnaround.

Also Read: 'I love this team': Rohit Sharma shares heartfelt message for fans after MI's 8th straight defeat in IPL 2022 Chopra also shared his views on the slump in Kishan's form this season. Unadkat hitting more runs than Pollard: Ex-India cricketer slams MI all-rounder for poor show in IPL 2022

Former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel has slammed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) all-rounder Krunal Pandya for his 'over the top' send-off to Mumbai Indians (MI) star Kieron Pollard in the clash between the two sides in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday.

LSG defeated Mumbai Indians comprehensively by 36 runs at the Wankhede Stadium to extend Rohit Sharma & Co's winless streak to eight matches this season. Mumbai Indians failed to chase down the target of 169 runs against LSG as their batting line-up faltered once again with Pandya starring with a three-wicket haul for the KL Rahul-led side.

While he bowled a brilliant spell, Pandya caught everyone's attention when he gave a unique send-off to Pollard after dismissing his ex-Mumbai Indians teammate in the game. Krunal went on to jump on Pollard from the back and gave him a kiss on his helmet as the Mumbai Indians all-rounder departed in the 20th over of his side's run-chase.

No one would have imagined the five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) to be occupying the last spot in IPL 2022 points table after their first seven games. 'Power hitting maestro': Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle lead tributes as Kieron Pollard announces retirement

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have their task cut out in a bid to stay alive in the playoffs race in IPL 2022 edition. The Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army have not hit the ground running so far in the 15th season of the IPL, with only one win from six games.

The defending champions and four-time winners CSK got off the mark with a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) -- in what was their fifth encounter -- and were on top versus Gujarat Titans (GT), in defence of a competitive 171, before David Miller-Rashid Khan's blitz took Gujarat past the finish line. While Chennai's batting has been expressive, their bowling has continued to let them down in crunch situations. Given they are facing arch-rivals and five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI), who are the only team yet to get off the mark in IPL 2022, CSK will churn out their best XI to get the better of Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21).

Chris Jordan was highly-expensive versus Gujarat, returning with 3.5-0-58-0, and looks set to make way for South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius -- who should never have been dropped in the first place as per many experts.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have their task cut out in a bid to stay alive in the playoffs race in IPL 2022 edition. The Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army have not hit the ground running so far in the 15th season of the IPL, with only one win from six games.

Moeen Ali will follow suit at No. 3 with Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, skipper Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo to form the middle and lower order. Chris Jordan was highly-expensive versus Gujarat, returning with 3.5-0-58-0, and looks set to make way for South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius -- who should never have been dropped in the first place as per many experts. Mukesh Choudhary and Maheesh Theekshana will continue to hold onto their respective spots and hope to strike with a few wickets in the powerplay overs, the nemesis of CSK this season.
West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard on Wednesday announced his retirement from international cricket though he will continue to freelance in private T20 and T10 leagues across the globe. The 34-year-old Pollard, who made his ODI debut back in 2007, fittingly played his last series against India, a country which has become his second home due to his long association with Mumbai Indians.

"Hi all, after careful deliberation, I have decided to retire from international cricket. It was a dream of mine to play for West Indies since I was a 10-year-old boy and I am proud to represent the West Indies for over 15 years in T20 and ODI format of the game," Pollard announced on his official Instagram page.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes Rohit Sharma should have given up captaincy for Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Rohit, who is the most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League, has led Mumbai Indians to five titles over the years but his form with the bat has been concerning over the last couple of seasons.

Rohit hasn't managed to fire with the bat for the five-time champions in the last couple of seasons and his poor patch has continued in the ongoing IPL 2022.
Manjrekar named Pollard as Rohit's replacement as captain and said the West Indies all-rounder still brings a lot of value to the table for MI. Pollard has played for Mumbai Indians throughout his IPL career and was one of the players to be retained by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022.

Though he hasn't quite managed to set the stage on fire with his performances this season, Manjrekar believes he needs just one game to find his mojo. Manjrekar said Rohit should have stepped down from captaincy like Virat Kohli did with RCB and should have handed over the baton to Pollard.

“I feel Pollard still adds value. [Before the season] I even felt Rohit Sharma might leave captaincy like Virat Kohli, relax a bit, play as a pure batter and hand the responsibility to Pollard who is a brilliant international captain,” Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

“Pollard still has the capability, I can see that from the sixes he hits. He’ll contribute in the pressure match, the crunch game. But they need to reach there first and that’s not on Pollard, it never has been. He’s never contributed throughout the season for Mumbai Indians. He plays one innings in a pressure game and sees the team through. Others need to work better because Pollard is doing his usual job,” he added.

After replacing Kohli as India's T20I captain last year, Rohit also took over from the batting maestro as the new captain of the national team across all three formats this year. While Rohit has been enjoying a purple patch for the Indian team in international cricket, his form has been under the scanner for MI in the IPL.

Match 14 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) lock horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Wednesday evening (April 06). Facing the Shreyas Iyer-led KKR outfit with no win after their first two games in the 15th season, MI had their back against the wall but ran into Pat Cummins' mouth-watering 15-ball 56* and Venkatesh Iyer's 41-ball 50 to lose their third game on the trot.

Opting to bowl first, Iyer & Co. started off with a bang. Umesh Yadav, KKR's in-form pacer, started off sharply whereas debutant Rasikh Salam also kept it tight with the ball. As a result, captain Rohit Sharma fell for an uninspiring 12-ball 3. Ishan Kishan, who had two successive fifties so far, also failed to get going on a sticky wicket. He hung around for a bit before departing for a 21-ball 14. Dewald Brevis, baby AB de Villiers, looked good in his brief stay on his maiden appearance before returning for a good-looking 19-ball 29, at 152.63.

From thereon, MI's recovery took place as Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma led the counterattack. The duo stitched a vital 83-run fourth-wicket stand to rescue the Mumbai Paltan. SKY, playing his first-ever game of the season, looked in sublime form and upped the ante effortlessly. He returned with a stunning 36-ball 52, at 144.44, before Tilak's 38* and Kieron Pollard's 5-ball 22 not out propelled MI to 161-4 in 20 overs.

In reply, KKR started slowly and steadily and were 67 for 3 at the halfway stage. While Venky Iyer held one end, he lost partners at regular intervals with plenty left to do. Murugan Ashwin and Tymal Mills struck regularly to keep MI in the hunt before they were blown away by Cummins' storm.

In reply, Rohit's 19-ball 40 and unbeaten innings from Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer took India home with seven balls to spare.

Thus, the West Indies team remain winless in the tour and will press hard for a comeback to keep the series alive. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if India go unchanged into the encounter or will they try bring in some new faces for Friday evening's clash.

INDvsWI: When and where to watch India vs West Indies 2nd T20I - IST time and streaming details

Team India put on a clinical display in the three-match ODI series versus West Indies, at home, to inflict a whitewash. Ahead of the three T20Is, starting on February 16, Rohit Sharma & Co. have been dealt with injury concerns with limited-overs vice-captain KL Rahul, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel being ruled out.

In Rahul's absence, who suffered a hamstring injury and wasn't part of the third and final ODI, BCCI have named a new vice-captain for the T20I leg. Rishabh Pant has been promoted as Rohit's deputy for the T20I series. This is the first time that Pant has been named as Team India's vice-captain for a series as the left-hander continues to grow in stature.

Pant is being looked upon as a future leader for Team India, especially after the rapid changes that have taken place in the senior men's team post the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. For the unversed, the 24-year-old is also a contender to become the Test captain (or vice-captain) with Virat Kohli's resignation early this year.
