Jammu and Kashmir’s pro-Pakistan separatist leader Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special Delhi court on Wednesday.

The Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) judge, Praveen Singh, handed out two imprisonments apart from 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in 10 offences and Rs 1 million penalty (US $12,902 approx.). The judge said that all the punishments will run concurrently.

The life term was awarded for two offences—Section 121 (waging war against the government of India) of IPC and section 17 (raising funds for the terrorist act) of the UAPA.

Malik was convicted last week.

Earlier, Malik, head of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), earlier had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). A special NIA court in Delhi pronounced its verdict on the quantum of punishment in the case.

He told the special court designated for the NIA that he had been following Gandhian principles and non-violent politics in Kashmir after giving up arms in the 1990s.

Mainly Hindu India has been fighting an armed militancy in Kashmir, also claimed by Pakistan, for decades.

"Life imprisonment sentence to the convict, Yasin Malik," Special Judge Parveen Singh said in the court in New Delhi.

Malik`s wife Mushaal Hussein Mullick said the sentencing was illegitimate.

Clashes erupt

In Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, police fired tear gas and pellets to disperse stone-pelting protesters outside Malik`s residence.

Clashes erupted between supporters of Malik and security forces in Maisuma locality&nbsp;s as parts of the city observed a spontaneous shutdown ahead of a court's verdict.

Scores of people, including women, assembled at Malik's residence at Maisuma, a short distance from Lal Chowk city centre, and raised slogans in support of the separatist leader, the officials said, adding that the protesters took out a protest march around the area.

The protesters tried to move towards Maisuma Chowk and clashed with security forces, they said.

Some of the protesters pelted stones on the security forces, who fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd, the officials said.

Kashmir's political parties react

Reacting to the conviction, political parties and prominent leaders in Kashmir said that it will further alienate the Kashmiri people.

''Life imprisonment given to Yaseen Malik is unfortunate and a setback to the efforts for peace. We are afraid that this will further compound the uncertainties in the region and will only fuel more alienation and separatist feelings. The NIA court has delivered its verdict but not justice. The triumphalism being displayed by the BJP is bound to prove counterproductive. Meanwhile, we suggest that Yaseen Malik avail all legal opportunities to contest this verdict,'' said spokesperson of People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami.

There are two other cases against Yasin Malik in which the trial is going on. One case pertains to the killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in 1990 in Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) court, which is still at the argument stage. Another case pertains&nbsp;to the kidnapping of Rubiya Syed, daughter of the former home minister and J&amp;K's former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. &nbsp;

Malik has more than 60 FIR's against his name in various cases.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up across the Kashmir Valley&nbsp;and the mobile internet service has also been snapped in a few areas.

J&K: Police arrests five hybrid terrorists of LeT, 15 pistols recovered

The Indian Army on Friday foiled an infiltration and narcotics smuggling bid in North Kashmir’s Tangdhar sector, where a terrorist was killed while another was injured.

The forces recovered arms and ammunition from the operation site. The two terrorists were trying to infiltrate the Indian territory into the forward area close to the Line of Control.&nbsp;

“The two intruding terrorists were fired upon, leading to the elimination of one terrorist, while grievously injuring the other. However, the injured terrorist managed to flee to the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, taking advantage of the darkness. A thorough search operation launched in the morning resulted in the recovery of the dead terrorist, two AK series rifles, two pistols, two grenades along with 10 packets of narcotics.” said the Indian Army’s Defence PRO, Srinagar.&nbsp;

“Indian army has repeatedly foiled Pakistan’s attempts to disrupt peace and harmony in Kashmir. Pakistan and Pakistan sponsored OGW nexus uses narco-terrorism to ruin the future of our youth while at the same time channelling funds collected from narco-trade to further their nefarious activities in Kashmir valley,” the statement added.

''It was a very cold evening in the month of February, I went to the food street of Khayam to take some pictures as I have always been interested in taking pictures of food. I think food connects us all. When I entered the area, there was a cold breeze and the kebab sellers had just started making the kebab's and the whole area was filled with smoke and aroma of kebabs. Jammu and Kashmir&nbsp;police busted a terror module of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

By arresting three terrorist associates, police in Kulgam busted a terror module of proscribed terror outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

Besides, police, along with security forces, have arrested two hybrid terrorists linked with the proscribed terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed in the Pattan area of Baramulla.&nbsp;

The three arrested terrorist associates were involved in the case pertaining to the killing of a panch Mohammad Yaqoob Dar in March this year, a police spokesman said.

Weapons used in the killing of the Panch, including one pistol, eight pistol rounds, and two grenades, were recovered from their possession.

During the course of investigation, it was learnt that an active terrorist of proscribed terror outfit HM, namely Farooq Ahmad Bhat, son of Ab Gani Bhat, resident of Cheki Desend Yaripora, had received directions from terror handlers based in Pakistan to target the PRI members of Kulgam.

On their directions, he identified the target and gave directions accordingly to the active terrorist, namely Raja Nadeem Rather, son of Ab Rehman Rather, resident of Ashmuji, to execute the terror act with the support of their associates, namely Nasser Ahmad Wani, son of Bashir Ahmad Wani, resident of Srandoo, Adil Manzoor Rather, son of Manzoor Ahmad Rather, resident of Ashmuji, and Majid Mohd Rather, son of Gh Mohd Rather, resident of Malipora Mirbazar.

The directions included conducting a reccee of the Panch's presence, arranging transport and providing logistics to execute the terror act.

Based on specific inputs regarding the movement of two terrorists in a vehicle moving towards Srinagar, joint Motor Vehicle Checking Points (MVCPs) were established by the Police, 29RR, and 2Bn SSB at various spots along the national highway and surrounding by-lanes.

At one such MVCP established at Hanjiveera Bala, a speedy vehicle (Tavera) was signalled to stop. However, as the vehicle stopped, two individuals (driver and co-driver) jumped off the vehicle and fled towards a nearby wooded orchard area.&nbsp;

The alert joint team chased the duo tactfully, and also the escape route cut offs were activated, which succeeded in nabbing them.&nbsp;

They have been identified as Mohd Aqib Mir, Kian Mir, Raqib Mir, son of Mohd Ramzan Mir, resident of Batpora, Sopore, and Danish Ahad Dar, son of Abdul Ahad Dar, resident of Sopore.

“During the searches, two suspects were apprehended and two pistols, and two chinese grenades were recovered from their possession,” the officials said.

The duo were identified as Aqib Mohammad Mir and Danish Ahad Dar, affiliated with Jaish outfit, they said.

Jammu and Kashmir Police said that the successful apprehension of these terrorists has foiled major terror plots.

Jammu and Kashmir: Hizbul module busted in Kulgam, five operatives held in Baramulla

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have a new challenge at hand. In a recent encounter in Srinagar's Bishembar Nagar,&nbsp;two slain Pakistani terrorists were found to be carrying Aadhaar cards.

The&nbsp;terrorists killed in the encounter were identified as&nbsp;Mohammed Bhai alias Abu Qasim and&nbsp;Abu Arsalan alias Khalid.

The security forces are now on alert after finding that the terror groups in the Kashmir Valley have started using biometric ID Aadhaar cards provided by the state-owned Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).&nbsp;

''People can make fake Aadhaar cards. We have found Aadhaar cards in the possession of the killed terrorists. Aadhaar as an identity is used everywhere, including seeking&nbsp;accommodation in hotels. The main idea for carrying fake Aadhaar is to mix up with the locals so that it becomes easier for them to carry out attacks without being noticed,"' said Kuldeep Singh, Director General, Central Reserve Police Force.&nbsp;

The forces say that such attempts by the Pakistani based terror groups are aimed at creating an impression that terrorism in the Kashmir valley is an indigenous movement.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir Police will be writing to&nbsp;UIDAI for the inclusion of more safety features, as the privacy guidelines of&nbsp; Aadhaar are very stringent which prevents&nbsp;any law enforcement agencies from verifying any card.&nbsp;

In 2019 also, the Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered an Aadhaar card from&nbsp;Mohammed Ismal Alvi, one of the masterminds of the 2019 attack on the CRPF convoy that left 40 personnel dead.

Kashmir Valley has always set exemplary examples of brotherhood between the communities.

After 75 years of taking care of the property belonging to the Hindu community, Muslims returned the land for the construction of Mata Sharda temple in Teetwal belt close to the Line of Control(LoC).&nbsp;

The temple is located in north Kashmir's Kupwara district and will be built to revive the centuries-old pilgrimage&nbsp;to Sharda Peeth in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir(PoK). The plan for the temple has been approved by the Sringeri south matth. The temple would be made with artwork granite stones and is being carved in Karnataka.&nbsp;

''Mata Sharda is the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. The importance of Sharda Peeth is well known to everyone. It used to be the oldest university much older than Nalanda and Taxila. And the oldest civilization. None of the Hindus have been allowed to go to Sharda Peeth and now we have been trying our best, my committee called Save Sharda Committee (SSC) to get it revived and re-open it,"&nbsp;Ravindra Pandita, head of Save Sharda Committee, said.

"We have a lot of researchers from PoK and here as well working on it. It's a shared heritage, the traditional routes are from places like Keran. Teetwal is the official route for the Sharda pilgrimage. We are constructing a base temple. We are quite hopeful that the LoC permit&nbsp;which exists between two countries, is revived so that we can travel and take the pilgrimage. The Jammu and Kashmir Hindus should be allowed to take this pilgrimage,'' Ravindra Pandita added.

The Hindu community in Kashmir wants the pilgrimage&nbsp;to open on the same pattern as Kartarpur. They want the PoK&nbsp;government to allow them to take this pilgrimage. It is the most important temple for the Kashmiri Pandit community.&nbsp;

''This is basically a base camp for the Sharda temple. The yatra would start from here. The pilgrimage would be taken to PoK. It's the most important temple for Kashmiri Pandits. It's what Mecca is to Muslims; Sharda is for Kashmiri Pandits. This base camp had a Gurudwara before 1947. The people called us and said this is the land that belongs to the temple and welcomed us with open arms. We have started the work,'' said Surinder Mirza a&nbsp;Kashmiri Pandit.&nbsp;

The Muslims handed over the land to the temple committee&nbsp;recently. And have also appealed to both India and Pakistan governments to make open the pilgrimage again&nbsp;so that the Kashmiri Pandit community can visit the temple in PoK.

''It was our duty, our ancestors have always told us that this land belonged to the temple, and they had told us whenever they come and want this land back, we should return it.&nbsp; We are hopeful that routes will be open. We want the old times to return,'' said a local Zameer Ahmad. &nbsp;

The temple construction committee&nbsp;has also kept Muslim members in the team. The temple is being built by a Kashmiri Muslim&nbsp;who says that this is the biggest example of brotherhood in Kashmir. He hopes that it becomes a meeting point for all the communities and an example of peace.&nbsp;

''It's a very old heritage and we had kept the land very safe with us. To strengthen the bond between the communities, we are making a temple, a Gurdwara&nbsp;already exists and we will build&nbsp;a Mosque too.&nbsp;This should be a centre for everyone to meet. We request the governments to allow this pilgrimage. We need the government from across to give us permits. People should remember that Ajaz was a Muslim who made temples, Mosques and Gurudwara,'' Ajaz Khan, member, temple construction committee, said.&nbsp;

The holy mace would be taken from Sharda Peeth temple to Chilhana village in PoK. The base camp would be a traditional&nbsp;route of the yatra.&nbsp;

After 75 years of taking care of the property belonging to the Hindu community, Muslims returned the land for the construction of Mata Sharda temple in Teetwal belt close to the Line of Control(LoC). The temple is located in north Kashmir's Kupwara district and will be built to revive the centuries-old pilgrimage to Sharda Peeth in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir(PoK). The plan for the temple has been approved by the Sringeri south matth. The temple would be made with artwork granite stones and is being carved in Karnataka. The Jammu and Kashmir government will start issuing trilingual land passbooks to the landholders starting from February 19 (Saturday).

As the name suggests, the land passbooks would contain details of a resident’s land records in Hindi, Urdu and English languages.

The aim is to make it an easy and simple document for reference and record in Hindi, Urdu and English language under the government’s initiative towards good governance and ease of convenience for the citizens.

“To begin with, seven tehsils (townships) of Srinagar district and 21 tehsils of Jammu district would receive the land passbooks across 28 locations,” the J&amp;K government said in a statement.&nbsp;

The land passbooks will be issued to every landholder in the Union Territory.

With scanning and digitisation of land records already under implementation for the convenience of citizens, the revenue department has also framed the Jammu and Kashmir Land Passbook Rules 2022 to procure land passbooks through online mode.

“The land passbooks will be issued to every landholder. It will contain past settlement records to enable him to make use for credit facilities and for other related matters. The land passbook prescribed by the Revenue Department is true to the record and can be generated online by landholder without visiting any revenue office,” it said.&nbsp;

Asserting that the land passbook is a step towards e-governance, the government said that the document will be a valid entity carrying the same evidentiary value as if being certified copies of Record-of-Rights before courts and financial institutions.

It is an authoritative document for grant of financial assistance by a financial institution, it said.

''Each land passbooks has a unique ID and QR code as an additional security feature. With the help of QR code, any institution, individual or an agency can verify the credentials and authenticity of the Land Passbook,” the government said.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said on Saturday that between January 4 and 7, rainfall or snowfall could be expected in most parts of the western Himalayan region, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, due to an active western disturbance approaching north-west India.&nbsp;

"A western disturbance is impacting Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, region. Under its influence, we are expecting scattered rainfall or snowfall over the region in the next 48 hours. From January 4, an active western disturbance will approach northwest India. Under its influence from January 4-7, there could be rainfall or snowfall at most places over the western Himalayan region like J-K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It will cause light to moderate rain or thundershower over plains of northwest India including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh," Mohapatra said.

He went on to say that as the western disturbance moves east, its intensity would reduce, but rainfall activity will increase into eastern India.

"As the western disturbance approaches north east India, the temperature rises. Therefore, the cold wave conditions that we are experiencing in some places over northwest India, will gradually abate. From January 4, the temperature in the planes of the country will be normal or above normal," the senior IMD official said.

Kashmir Valley has been hit by an intense cold wave with temperatures&nbsp;dipping to sub-zero as&nbsp;people in the Valley have been using every method and appliance to keep themselves warm. But the age-old Kangri (earthen pot) still is the favourite to keep themselves&nbsp;warm.&nbsp;

Kangri is an earthen pot encased in a wicker basket. The weaving around it is intricate and beautifully designed. The locals in the Valley call it a portable heater to keep warm under freezing condictions.&nbsp;

The Chraar-e-Shareef area in central Kashmir's Budgam district is known for making the best Kangri's in the Kashmir Valley. For its craftsmanship and quality, lakhs of Kangri's are sold every winter from this area.&nbsp;

<img alt="Kangri weavers in J&amp;K" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c56a2b23-6c2f-48d7-879f-bf6bfab5fde8" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/kk3.jpeg" />

''Necessity is the mother of invention. We live in a region which is very cold with&nbsp;at least for 4-5 months of winter. And to counter the cold, Kangri was invented. It keeps us warm. It has new designs&nbsp;now as well,"&nbsp; said Ghulam Hassan Bhat, a Kangri businessman.&nbsp;

"We get raw material from the jungle for weaving. We dry the twigs and later colour it. There is an earthen pot inside. It's a lot of work for the artisans. There are various types of Kangris. And their&nbsp;pricing also depends on the same. It's a part of our culture and also a necessity,"&nbsp; Bhat added.

"Although there are new heating devices in the market, this can never go out of fashion. It's a craft which will always stay here. The best craftsmanship of making the Kangri is in this area of Chraar-e-Shareef. There is no electricity in our areas, we have huge power cuts and that's why Kangri is our best way to keep warm,'' he said.&nbsp;

One artisan makes around 3-4 Kangris in a day. The artisans say that the demand for Kangri has gone up. The long power cuts make most of the new gadgets and appliances useless while countering cold. So Kangri is a tradition as well as a&nbsp;necessity for the&nbsp;Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

"I have been making these Kangris for 21 years. Our Kangris are famous for weaving. We take a lot of time to gather the raw material and use the best quality. We also get orders to weave Kangris for decoration. In our area, we must be making around 3 lakh Kangris every year. Now even people who were not associated with this craft have started making these Kangris,'' said Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, an artisan.&nbsp;

Kangri making is also an art in itself. Artisans use different colours while weaving to make it look beautiful. The weaving is done stepwise and that decides the pricing of the Kangri.&nbsp;

''I make around four&nbsp;Kangris a day. The best quality Kangri is made in our area. We have beautiful colourful Kangris. It has many types, we differentiate the Kangris on the basis of workmanship. The weaving is done in steps and there are many such steps which make them better. I have been making Kangris&nbsp;for ages, although the rate of raw material has gone up. Kashmiris cannot do without the Kangri,'' Ghulam Nabi&nbsp;Bhat said.&nbsp;

The younger generation has also started to pick up this art. They say&nbsp;with growing unemployment, they have also learnt the art from their elders and will teach the next generation as well.&nbsp;

Kangri works on burning coal and it does have side effects. Experts say that it can cause skin burns, pollution and sometimes also be responsible for fire incidents in many areas,&nbsp;so while using Kangri's a lot of protection needs to be taken.

J&K: Policeman shot dead by terrorists in Srinagar, authorities beef up security

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived here on Saturday for his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was revoked in August 2019 and drove straight to meet the family of a police officer killed by terrorists earlier this year.

Shah, who will also be visiting Jammu where he will address a public rally, will review the security situation in the Valley during his three-day trip to the union territory and also flag off the inaugural Srinagar-Sharjah flight.

He was received at the Srinagar airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other senior officials of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, officials said.

From the airport, Shah went straight to the residence of Inspector Parvaiz Ahmad in Nowgam on the outskirts of the city. The police officer was shot dead on June 22 as he was returning home after praying at a local mosque.

This is Shah's first visit since Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 was revoked on August 5, 2019, and the state bifurcated into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Security was beefed up across Kashmir ahead of Shah's visit that comes in the wake of the spate of civilians, particularly non-locals and minorities, being killed. Additional forces had been deployed, particularly in the city, officials said.

Later, Shah reviewed the security scenario at a meeting held at the Raj Bhawan here and attended by top civil administration officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and senior security officials from the Army, CRPF, police and other agencies, officials said.

The home minister was briefed about the steps taken to eliminate terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir and counter-infiltration measures taken by the forces, the officials said.

Shah's visit to Kashmir comes in the backdrop of 11 civilian killings in the valley in October alone. Five of those killed were labourers from Bihar, while three, including two teachers, belonged to minority communities in Kashmir.&nbsp;
