Mumbai Indians (MI) didn't have the best of starts to the proceedings at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction but the five-time champions managed to finish things off in style on the second day of the event. Mumbai Indians had a quiet first day as they made very calculated moves and went all out to buy back Indian wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan for a whopping sum of Rs 15.25 crore (INR 152.5 million).

Mumbai Indians had headed into the mega auction with a purse of Rs 48 crore (INR 480 million) after retaining a total of four players - Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. One of the most successful teams in the history of the league, MI were expected to make swift moves at the auction but they remained mostly inactive on the first day.

After making Kishan the costliest buy at the IPL 2022 mega auction on the first day, MI went big on England pacer Jofra Archer and Singapore all-rounder Tim David, spending Rs 8 crore (INR 80 million) and Rs 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million) on the two players respectively. While the prospect of facing Archer and Bumrah together will be nightmarish for the best of batters in the IPL, MI have a lot of holes in their squad.

As per Hogg, Mumbai Indians now have a lack of finishers in the side after the departure of Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. The former Australia spinner also feels the quality of spinner in the Mumbai Indians line-up is average. Hogg also labelled Archer's acquisition as a huge risk as the England pacer has been nursing an elbow injury which has kept him away from cricket for a long time now. Archer will also miss the upcoming season of IPL and will be in action from the 2023 edition of the tournament.

“Spending 8 crore on Archer is a huge risk, especially after spending 15 crore on Ishan Kishan. He’s had two elbow surgeries in the last 18 months, that’s the worst injury a fast bowler could have,” said Hogg.

“They have a formidable top order in Rohit, Kishan and Surya and then David at No.4, which is also a risk. Who’s going to bat at No.5 is the big question. The bowling department is where their headache starts. They don’t have depth in their bowling and not many top-class spinners. They also don’t have finishers like the Pandya brothers. This is one of the worst auctions MI has ever had,” he added.

In the absence of Archer, Mumbai will hope the likes of Jaydev Unadkat and Tymal Mills can form a destructive pairing with Bumrah. They also would hope for a good show from South Africa U-19 star Dewald Brevis, who has been termed as the 'next AB de Villiers' by many.

The auction kept cricket fans across the globe hooked to their television screens as it produced some thrilling bidding wars between the ten teams.&nbsp;Noted presenter and broadcaster Charu Sharma won the hearts of many with his amazing work as an auctioneer after he had to replace Hugh Edmeades, who had an abrupt fall on day 1 and had to be provided immediate medical attention.

While Sharma went about his business with poise and confidence, he ended up making a big goof-up on day 2 of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The mistake took place when Delhi Capitals (DC)&nbsp;and Mumbai Indians (MI) were locked in a bidding war for Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed.

As the bidding crossed the Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) mark, Mumbai Indians were the first to raise the bid to Rs 5.25 crore (INR 52.5 million). Sharma then asked Delhi Capitals if they were willing to up their bid to Rs 5.50 crore (INR 55 million). DC co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi were seen hesitatingly raising the paddle to up the bid while also having a discussion with the other members in the DC panel.

While the bid should have been raised to Rs 5.50 crore (INR 55 million), Sharma mistakenly announced that DC had the highest bid for the player at the previous amount of Rs 5.25 crore (INR 52.5 million). Khaleel was eventually sold to DC for the same amount, however, it was Mumbai Indians who had first bid that amount for the Indian pacer.

RCB have bought the likes of Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik, who have a plethora of experience when it comes to the IPL and have been part of the league for several years now. While Glenn Maxwell, who was retained by the franchise, is being seen as one of the favourites to lead the side in IPL 2022, Du Plessis and Karthik are also among potential captaincy candidates for the side.

Indian pacer Harshal Patel, who was one of the top buys for RCB at the IPL 2022 mega auction for a sum of whopping Rs 10.75 crore, backed Du Plessis as one of the candidates to take over from Kohli as captain of the team.&nbsp;

England batter Liam Livingstone turned out to be the most expensive overseas buy at the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction on Sunday (February 13). Punjab Kings (PBKS) shelled out a whopping Rs 11.50 crore (INR 115 million) to rope in the England star, who is known for his big-hitting ability and can also be a handy leg-spinner.

Livingstone triggered a bidding war between the teams as soon as his name was announced at the mega auction on Sunday. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were locked in a battle for the England star before Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings joined the bidding war. Punjab eventually managed to get the England star for Rs 11.5 crore.

While social media was full of reactions over the move as many lauded Punjab for roping in the hard-hitting English batter, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar labelled the signing a 'gamble'. Manjrekar pointed out Livingstone's struggles in the IPL last season when he was part of the Rajasthan Royals squad.

Livingstone played five matches for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 and managed to score only 42 runs. He was dropped from the side after a series of disappointing performances before being brought back but failed to showcase his skills and talent in the league.

Manjrekar said Livingstone was a gamble considering the price he went at and his past performance do not instil much confidence. While he praised the Royals for making some great signings at the IPL 2022 mega auction, he insisted Livingstone was a gamble.

Jindal said he was quite happy with the work done by the team on day one of the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, he revealed Pant really wanted Avesh, who went out of the team's budget during the bidding war.

"Yeah, I think, very satisfied [how the squad has shaped up till now]. I think we have a very good balance. We filled up most of our starting XI spots, we have a little bit of work to do going into tomorrow especially in the back-ups and making sure that we have a very good and solid squad. But overall I think we have some really really sensational players to compliment the four retained players," Jindal said talking to DCTV.

"I have been in touch with Rishabh, he is also really happy with most of the squad. Although he did really want Avesh Khan, we tried but again it went way beyond our budget but I think we have a very good squad that can challenge for the playoffs and hopefully go better," he added.

Apart from his leadership qualities, Iyer has also been in top form with the bat and notched up a brilliant 80-run knock in the third and final ODI between India and West Indies on Friday (February 2).

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went all out to buy back star Indian pacer Deepak Chahar at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction on Saturday (February 12). Chahar, who has been one of the integral members of the CSK squad since joining the franchise in 2018, was roped in by the four-time champions for a sum of a whopping Rs 14 crore (INR 140 million).

Chahar became one of the most expensive picks on day 1 of the ongoing IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru on Saturday. He had opted for a base price of Rs 2 crore but an intense bidding war between teams like Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and CSK saw his price rise seven times.

Chahar was eventually roped in by CSK at Rs 14 crore becoming the most expensive signing by the franchise in the history of IPL auction. CSK have not spent more than Rs 14 crore on any player in an auction so far in the history of the competition.&nbsp;

Chahar was bought by CSK for a sum of Rs 80 lakh in 2018. He went on to become a vital cog in the team's pace attack and went on to make his India debut after shining for CSK. Chahar will be now making more than 17 times what he was earning before at the franchise after going for a record sum of Rs 14 crore.

Chopra believes it will be a major challenge for CSK to buy back one of Deepak Chahar or Shardul Thakur, who both had to be let go of by the franchise.

"Rayudu and Uthappa slightly contentious choices, regarding the next three years. They will go all out and try to get at least one of [Deepak] Chahar or [Shardul] Thakur. They tend to stick with people who they have worked with very well. Very pragmatic team, don't see them spending 15 crore on their next captain," said Chopra.

The final list of 590 players consists of 370 Indians and 220 overseas stars. There are 228 capped players, 355 uncapped players and 7 players from associate nations who will be going under the hammer at the IPL mega auction this month. The players have been divided across seven different categories as per their base price.

The players who have opted for the highest base price of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) are in the top bracket followed by those in the brackets of Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million), Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million), Rs 75 lakh (INR 7.5 million), Rs 50 lakh (INR 5 million), Rs 40 lakh (INR 4 million) and Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million).

There are 228 capped players, 355 uncapped players and 7 players from associate nations who will be going under the hammer at the IPL mega auction this month. The players have been divided across seven different categories as per their base price. The players who have opted for the highest base price of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) are in the top bracket followed by those in the brackets of Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million), Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million), Rs 75 lakh (INR 7.5 million), Rs 50 lakh (INR 5 million), Rs 40 lakh (INR 4 million) and Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million). While the uncapped players, who are yet to make their international debut, can opt for a maximum base price of Rs 40 lakh (INR 4 million), a capped player is free to put his name under any of the seven brackets. England pacer Jofra Archer is back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction after initially opting not to register for the mega event. Archer was one of the big names to not register for the auction amid his ongoing battle with an elbow injury for which he underwent a second operation in December last year.

Archer was expected to not return to the mega auction after not putting his name in the initial list. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday confirmed the England fast bowler has enlisted his name for the event which is scheduled to be conducted in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

However, Archer is unlikely to take part in IPL 2022 and is all set to give the league a miss despite being part of the auction. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has informed the BCCI that the fast bowler is certain to play in the 2023 and the 2024 editions but is unlikely to take part in IPL 2022 this year owing to his injury.&nbsp;

The BCCI has informed all ten franchises about the same and said that the pacer should be picked by a franchise keeping in mind that he will not play in the upcoming season. "The ECB has registered Archer for the auction with a view to potential participation in 2023 and 2024, as due to his current injury it is unlikely that he can participate in IPL 2022," the board wrote to the franchises, as per Cricbuzz.

The England pacer could have been among the marquee players in the mega auction this year but was not included in the elite list due to concerns over his availability. BCCI has also informed all franchises that they won't be allowed to pick a replacement for Archer for IPL 2022 if they buy him at the mega auction this year.

"He won't feature in the Marquee or other sets to be presented. He will be available to be called during the accelerated auction and whoever picks him will not get a replacement player for IPL 2022 season for his place as he is already injured and unlikely to participate in IPL 2022 season," the BCCI wrote.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Brendon McCullum said he was disappointed to see the franchise lose star India batter Shubman Gill ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. Like the other franchises, KKR too had a tough time in finalising their four retentions ahead of the mega auction.

The two-time champions decided to keep West Indies all-rounders Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy and young Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer while letting go of Gill. Gill was once touted as one of the future leaders of KKR but had to be released by the franchise.

Gill was picked up by the Ahmedabad IPL franchise as one of their three picks from the players draft ahead of the auction. The young Indian batter has joined the Ahmedabad franchise for a whopping sum of Rs 8 crore (INR 80 million). McCullum said it was disappointing to lose Gill but they have their plans heading into the mega auction.

"You need to plan as you're going to lose a lot of players. It was disappointing to lose Shubman Gill. But that's the way life is sometimes and we will be well prepared for the upcoming auction," said the KKR head coach in a live session on the franchise's social media handles.

"Certainly not easy to find a backup for someone like Andre Russell and that's why he is such an important re-signing. When he is at his best, he is effectively two world-class players in one. It's really challenging to find a backup for these players. That will be the topic of our conversation. If Dre Russ is out due to injury, you could need two players, a batter and a bowler, and try to balance things out accordingly," McCullum added.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, who is also an active analyst of the game, believes Deepak Chahar can become the most expensive pick among Indian pacers at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Chahar was part of the CSK squad from IPL 2018 to 2021 season last year and has picked up 59 wickets in 63 matches in his IPL career so far.

Chahar is known for his exploits in the powerplay where he has been consistently effective throughtout his stint with CSK and has proven to be a prolific wicket-taker upfront. Chahar was reelased by CSK ahead of the mega auction as the franchise could retain only four players.

"There are a lot of names who are going to be available. There will be some fight for the Indian names. But I still believe that Deepak Chahar will be the most expensive; it's just a gut feel. There will be a lot of teams who will put money on him because he is a three-over powerplay bank," said Chopra in a video on his YouTube channel.

"He is a wicket-taker. Even if he is expensive, he will pick up wickets. He is batting alright, and is putting his case forward again and again. While Chopra snubbed experienced Indian campaigner Mohammed Shami, who is also in the auction pool, he backed Shardul Tahkur to also fetch a big amount at the IPL 2022 mega acution. Shardul was also part of the CSK squad last year and has enjyed a tremendous rise in the last couple of years.

"Can Shardul Thakur be the one? He can be, but will he be the most expensive? I am not a 100%, honestly, because he is a middle-overs bowler. There is one thing common between him and Deepak - that both can bat. That is another string to their bow, which is outstanding," said Chopra.&nbsp;

In the viral video, Shardul and Chahal can be seen hanging out with the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Shardul can be heard Rahul, who is set to captain Lucknow Super Giants next season if they have kept a specified budget for the Indian pacer. Chahal responds by stating that there is no budget for 'the lord' referring to his famous nickname on social media.

"Aap logo ka budget kitna hai mere liye?" (What is your (Lucknow Super Giants) budget for me?) Shardul can be heard asking Rahul. "Base price," responds Rahul before Chahal says - "Bhagwan ke liye budget nahi hota bro" (There is no budget for the lord brother).

A staggering 1214 players have registered for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega player auction which is all set to take place in Bengaluru next month. Not eight but ten teams will be part of the auction process this time around after the inclusion of two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad for the next edition of the tournament. All ten teams will be aiming to build strong squads almost from scratch ahead of the new season.

While the existing eight teams had the option of retaining a maximum of four players each, the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad were allowed to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained ones. A number of top players are still in the fray to be picked by the ten teams after entering the mega auction. There are a total of five brackets that have been set by the BCCI for the players and a capped can put his name in any of the brackets.

The five brackets for the players are Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million), Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million), Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million), Rs 50 lakh (INR 5 million) and Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million). While a total of 49 players, including Indians and overseas, opted for the top bracket with the base price of Rs 2 crore, 20 players have opted for the second-highest bracket of Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million).

Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Eoin Morgan, star England batter Jonny Bairstow and Shimron Hetmyer are some of the prominent names in the Rs 1.5 crore category. Eoin Morgan to Jonny Bairstow: Complete List of players with base price of Rs 1.5cr at IPL mega auction

Several star players have decided to skip the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction and will not be part of the next edition of the tournament. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Ben Stokes, Chris Gayle and Jofra Archer among others have not registered to be part of the mega auction, confirming that they will give IPL 2022 a miss.

England all-rounder Sam Curran has also not registered for the mega auction and is all set to miss out on playing in IPL 2022. While most of these players have opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons or bio-bubble fatigue, Curran has decided to not take part in the mega auction owing to his recovery from a lower-back injury.

Curran was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in IPL 2021 and managed to play only nine games before his campaign was cut short due to his injury. Curran had scored 56 runs and picked up 9 wickets in what was an average campaign for him last season. He was subsequently ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2021 and also missed the Ashes 2021-22 in Australia due to his injury.

Curran took to Twitter on Saturday to reveal he had decided to give IPL 2022 a miss to focus on his rehab after recovering from injury. He had recently hit the nets for the first time in three months and is preparing for the county season with Surrey.

"It was agreed that sadly I should not enter the IPL auction this year and to focus on my rehabilitation. I’m back in the nets and feeling great so hope to be back soon, Wishing everyone all the best for the tournament. I look forward to starting the season with @surreycricket," Curran wrote in a tweet.
