Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni's bromance is well known in the cricketing fraternity. While Dhoni is much senior to Kohli, the latter thrived under his leadership and became a household name in the country post the retirements of stalwarts such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, etc.

On the other hand, Dhoni continued to serve Indian cricket for over two years under his successor Kohli and helped the 33-year-old become a better captain. Hence, the two share a great camaraderie both on and off the field. A fine example of their healthy relationship was on display when Kohli lavished praise on Dhoni after the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper's 6-ball 18* led the Yellow Army to a thrilling 4-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2021.

Dhoni, who came out to bat in the penultimate over with CSK needing 24 off 11 balls, had a string of poor outings prior to DC versus CSK Qualifier 1 clash, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. However, he turned it around when it mattered the most to take Chennai to their ninth IPL final and, thus, silenced his critics in style.

Following his knock, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Kohli couldn't keep calm and praised Dhoni.

The countdown for the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction has started with the existing eight teams having revealed their final list of retained and released players. All eight teams have managed to keep some of the best players to build their squads around ahead of the 2022 season which is all set to be a ten-team affair.

While the existing eight teams have been allowed to retain a maximum of four players each, the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow can pick a maximum of three players each ahead of the mega auction from the large pool of non-retained players.

While some of the top players are already in negotiations with the two new teams and are likely to be part of a new team in IPL 2022, some players might get bought back by their respective former franchises at the mega auction. Here is a look at five players that the teams will look to buy back at the IPL mega auction.

1) Faf du Plessis - Chennai Super Kings

Faf du Plessis played an instrumental role in helping Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reach the final of the IPL 2019 before inspiring them to a memorable title triumph in IPL 2021 this year. The veteran South African batter has been one of the best performers with the willow for CSK in the last few years. Du Plessis was the second-highest run-getter in the IPL 2021 with 633 runs in 16 games at an average of over 45.

Du Plessis missed out on the Orange Cap by just three runs as his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad finished as the top run-getter of the season with 635 runs. Du Plessis was one of the favourites to be retained by CSK, however, he was pipped by all-rounder Moeen Ali. Nonetheless, CSK are likely to go all out to get Du Plessis back at the mega auction.

2) Ishan Kishan

The explosive young wicket-keeper batter has seen his stature grow in the past couple of years. Kishan was sensational for the four-time champions in IPL 2020 with a staggering 516 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of over 145 and a brilliant average of over 57.

Kishan made his T20I debut for India earlier this year and has been impressive in the handful of games he has played for the national team. He was one of the major contenders to be retained by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the mega auction, however, was let go of at the end with the franchise retaining Suryakumar Yadav. MI might look to buy back Kishan at the mega auction.

3) Avesh Khan

One of the best Indian pacers of the 2021 season, Avesh Khan was instrumental in helping Delhi Capitals reach the playoffs this year. He was the second-highest wicket-taker of the season with 24 wickets in 16 matches in IPL 2021. The Indian fast bowler is likely to be in huge demand at the mega auction and Delhi Capitals would be hoping to bring him back to the franchise ahead of IPL 2022.

4) Devdutt Padikkal

One of the prominent young batting talents in the country at present, Devdutt Padikkal has been a consistent run-getter for RCB since making his debut for the franchise in IPL 2020. The left-hander notched up 473 runs in 15 games in his debut season before following it up with 411 runs in 14 matches in IPL 2021 this year. RCB were expected to keep hold of the youngster but he was surprisingly released by the franchise. RCB will be hopeful of getting him back at the mega auction.

5) Sam Curran

Chennai Super Kings retained Moeen Ali while letting go of some of their prominent overseas players like Du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Sam Curran. While Bravo's growing age remains a concern, England star Curran can be bought back by the franchise at the mega auction. Curran did well for CSK in the last couple of years with 242 runs and 22 wickets in the last two seasons.

Veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh is likely to announce his retirement from all forms of cricket next week. Harbhajan last played for Team India in October 2015 and has since been plying his trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is yet to announce his retirement from international cricket despite not having been part of the national team for more than six years now.

However, as per a report in PTI, Harbhajan has now decided to hang up his boots and is expected to be seen in a completely new role in the IPL from next season. Harbhajan has a couple of offers from IPL franchises to join their support staff as a mentor, consultant or part of the advisory group. He is likely to announce his retirement next week.

Harbhajan had featured for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the last season of IPL this year where he played a few games in the first leg of the edition in India. However, he didn't make the cut into playing XI in the second leg of the tournament in the UAE. The 41-year-old has decided to quit cricket and take up a coaching role.

"The role could be that of a consultant, mentor or part of the advisory group but the franchise with which he is talking are keen to use his vast experience. He will take active part in also helping the franchise decide on their auction picks," an IPL source, privy to the development was quoted as saying by PTI.

Harbhajan is reportedly in negotiations with one of the franchises who have offered him to join their support staff and will be making an official announcement once the deal is done. The veteran spinner played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is in his international career, picking up 417, 269 and 25 wickets in the three formats respectively.

Harbhajan Singh likely to announce retirement, set to join support staff of high-profile IPL team - Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to witness a mega auction ahead of the new season with ten teams looking to build their squads almost from scratch. While the existing eight teams have already revealed the list of retained players, the two new franchises - Ahmedabad and Lucknow have a chance to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained ones.

The mega auction is all set to feature a host of Indian and overseas superstars who will be in demand considering the increase in the number of teams from eight to ten. While some of the stars released by their respective franchises might be bought back, some may find new teams in the mega auction.

There will also be a number of IPL veterans who might go unsold at the mega auction this time around. Here is a look at five IPL stars who might not find any buyer at the mega auction considering their age and poor form.

1) Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is a bonafide legend in the Indian Premier League. He has been part of the league right from the inception of the tournament in 2008 and has played an integral role in Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s success over the years. Raina is the fourth-highest run-getter in the history of IPL with 5528 runs in 205 matches but is no more the player he once was.

The 35-year-old, who retired from international cricket last year, has struggled in the IPL over the last few seasons and has failed to churn out runs consistently. He was released by CSK ahead of the mega auction this year and might go unsold if the four-time champions decide not to buy him back.

2) Chris Gayle

Another IPL great who is in the final lap of his cricketing career, Chris Gayle might remain unsold at the IPL mega auction ahead of the 2022 season. The legendary batter is regarded as one of the greatest of all times in T20 cricket and has been entertaining his fans with his exploits in the IPL over the years.

The power-hitter was once a nightmare to face for the best of bowlers in the world but his waning prowess with the willow over the last few years has seen him fail to make an impact in the IPL. Gayle, who has 4965 runs in 142 matches, was picked at the last minute by Punjab Kings in the 2018 player auction after going unsold twice. He might not be picked by any team this time around.

3) Ajinkya Rahane

Former Rajasthan Royals captain Ajinkya Rahane played only eleven matches for Delhi Capitals in the last two seasons since joining the franchise from RR. An IPL veteran, Rahane too has been part of the league since its inception in 2008 and has a great record.

However, he is no longer a regular for India in white-ball cricket and plas only Test cricket at the international level. He has also struggled to score runs in IPL over the last couple of seasons with just 121 runs in 11 games at a strike rate of just above 100. Rahane might go unsold at the IPL mega auction ahead of the new season considering his lean patch in Tests as well of late.

4) Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is one of the few players to have already played over 200 matches in the IPL. He had led KKR in the 2018 and 2019 seasons before handing over the captaincy to Eoin Morgan midway through the 2020 edition. Karthik's form in the tournament has been concerning as he has failed to attain consistency.

In the last two seasons, he has 169 and 223 runs to his name in 14 and 17 matches respectively. Karthik has been released by KKR and might not find a buyer at the IPL mega auction.

5) Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla is one of the most successful bowlers in the history of IPL. He is the fourth-highest wicket-taker of all time in IPL with 157 wickets in 165 matches. Chawla has been part of KKR's title triumphs in the 2012 and 2014 seasons but with growing age, he has seen a massive drop in his performance levels.

The spinner was part of the Mumbai Indians squad in IPL 2021 and managed to make only a solitary appearance. He finished the season with just one wicket to his name. In the last two seasons, Chawla has played just 8 matches in the PL and has seven wickets to his name. He is one of the IPL veterans who might go unsold in the upcoming mega auction.

He might not be picked by any team this time around. 3) Ajinkya Rahane Former Rajasthan Royals captain Ajinkya Rahane played only eleven matches for Delhi Capitals in the last two seasons since joining the franchise from RR. 4) Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik is one of the few players to have already played over 200 matches in the IPL.

From Rs 20 lakh to 8 crore! Indian youngsters who earned massive salary hikes ahead of IPL mega auction

All the eight existing IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). While some big names were retained, many popular names got released. Though many are set to enter the auction pool, some big players are expected to be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- as the two new additions have a license to pick three players each prior to IPL 2022 mega auction.

For the unversed, the big players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Hardik Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Ben Stokes, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. have been released. Hence, the two new IPL teams have quite a few options to pick from.

Before the mega auction, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra named six players who are most likely to be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Speaking on his Youtube channel, "My first pick is KL Rahul. I feel he will not be able to reach the auction. Punjab Kings wanted to retain him but he didn’t want to. I think he is going to Lucknow and will become the captain of the new team. Rashid Khan is second in the pecking order. I don’t think his name will reach the auction table. He did not want to stay at SunRisers Hyderabad as he has been already approached by a new franchise with a better salary.

My third pick is Shreyas Iyer. He is likely to become captain of the Ahmedabad franchise. He is an important player and will be drafted to a new team. I won’t be surprised to see him lead Ahmedabad as he has already captained Delhi Capitals. Yuzvendra Chahal is another player who might go to Ahmedabad. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya might not be a part of the auction, but Ishan Kishan’s stocks are a bit high at the moment," he opined.

“David Warner will not make it to the auction either. He is a proven match-winner. He has a lot of experience, has won a lot of games, and has scored 600 odds runs in so many seasons. You won’t find a more consistent player than him,” Chopra added.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is likely to be held in early 2022. On the other hand, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that the next edition will be held in India.

Aakash Chopra predicts 6 players who will be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad before IPL 2022 auction

The existing eight franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) recently revealed the names of the players they have retained ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 season and beyond. While the franchises made some smart retentions, some of the picks surprised many as a number of top players were released by their respective franchises.

The likes of Rashid Khan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya among others were released by their respective teams as the countdown for the mega auction begins. The two new IPL teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad now have a chance to pick a maximum of three players each from the pool of non-retained players ahead of the mega auction.

The mega auction ahead of IPL 2022 is all set to be one of the busiest ones as ten teams will be looking to build their respective squads almost from scratch with the remaining amount in their auction purse. While there will be plenty of Indian names in the fray, a number of overseas superstars will also feature in the mega auction this time around.

Here we take a look at the top five overseas stars who have been released by their respective IPL franchises and are set to head into the auction pool or get picked by one of the two new teams.

1) David Warner

The first name on the list is Australian star batter David Warner. An IPL great and one of the most consistent performers in the history of the league, Warner has been let go of by Sunrisers Hyderabad after a disappointing campaign in the 2021 season. Warner has been one of the best batters in the league over the years and his numbers prove his class. Warner is the highest run-getter among overseas batters and the fifth-highest overall with 5449 runs to his name in 150 matches at an average of over 41 and a strike rate close to 140.

2) Rashid Khan

Another Sunrisers Hyderabad star who features in the list. Many had expected SRH to retain Rashid, however, the spinner's desire to reportedly be the first-choice retention saw the franchise releasing him ahead of the mega auction. Rashid has been one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL ever since making his debut in 2017. He spent four years with SRH, playing 76 matches and picking up 93 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.33. He is reportedly in talks with the Lucknow franchise ahead of the mega auction.

3) Ben Stokes

England all-rounder Ben Stokes had become the most expensive overseas player at the time when he was picked up by Rising Pune Supergiant for a whopping Rs 14.5 crore (INR 145 million) in 2017. Stokes' stature has since grown in leaps and bounds and he has established his credentials as one of the best all-rounders in the world at present. Stokes has 920 runs and 28 wickets under his belt in 48 IPL matches. He was released by Rajasthan Royals this year but is expected to fetch a big amount at the mega auction.

4) Faf du Plessis

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had to let go of one of their most consistent batters over the last couple of years due to the 4-player cap on retentions. CSK decided to keep all-rounder Moeen Ali over Faf due to his all-round abilities but will be trying their best to get the Proteas batter back in the mega auction. Du Plessis played a key role in CSK's IPL triumph in the 2021 season with 633 runs from 16 matches as he finished 2nd on the list of highest run-getters of the season behind only his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad, who notched up 635 runs and was retained by the franchise for Rs 6 crore (INR 60 million).

5) Kagiso Rabada

One of the best fast bowlers in the world and a force to reckon with in IPL over the years, it came as a surprise to many when Delhi Capitals decided to release Kagiso Rabada and keep Anrich Nortje. Rabada has been a prolific wicket-taker in the IPL with 76 wickets in just 50 IPL matches. He was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament in IPL 2020 with 30 scalps in 17 matches.

Rashid Khan to Ben Stokes: Top 5 overseas players released by their teams ahead of IPL mega auction

All the eight IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). While some big names were retained by their respective franchises, some known faces got released. As two more teams have been added to the IPL, in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad, they will get a chance to pick three players each prior to the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Hence, six players will find themselves being part of the two new teams. On the other hand, the IPL 2022 mega auction will see some marquee players enter the auction pool. Among them, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels ex-Mumbai Indians (MI) player Rahul Chahar is likely to get acquired by the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Chopra said during a Q/A session on his Youtube channel, "RCB will not get Rashid, they can forget about that. Instead, they will go after Rahul Chahar, big time. No spinners apart from leg spinners work at the Chinnaswamy stadium. He also bowls a lot quicker in the air. Ravi Bishnoi is also an option, but I’m thinking Rahul Chahar, they will break the bank for him. Chahal might not make it to the auctions."

It is important to note that RCB have retained Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj. Hence, with no Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB will like to rope in a quality spinner. While Rashid Khan will be very costly, Chopra feels Rahul Chahar can be a handy pick for the Bengaluru franchise.

Talking about the MI franchise, they have released plenty of star players such as Pandya brothers, Trent Boult, Rahul Chahar, Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan. All of them are expected to get whopping deals in the forthcoming auction, which is slated to be held early in 2022.

ALSO READ | Robin Uthappa hints at MS Dhoni's successor as CSK captain: 'They have given him the due he deserved' Chopra said during a Q/A session on his Youtube channel, "RCB will not get Rashid, they can forget about that. Chahal might not make it to the auctions." It is important to note that RCB have retained Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj. Hence, with no Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB will like to rope in a quality spinner. While Rashid Khan will be very costly, Chopra feels Rahul Chahar can be a handy pick for the Bengaluru franchise. ALSO READ | CSK, RCB & Co. are you listening? All of them are expected to get whopping deals in the forthcoming auction, which is slated to be held early in 2022.

David Warner's fall-out with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 had sent shockwaves around the cricket fraternity. Warner was sacked from captaincy before being dropped from the playing XI as he endured one of his worst seasons in the IPL.

The star Australian batter has been released by SRH and questions are still being raised over the treatment handed out to him by the franchise. SRH are facing criticism from all quarters after their decision to retain captain Kane Williamson, and uncapped players - Umran Malik and Abdul Samad, while letting go of the likes of Warner and Rashid Khan.

Warner and Rashid have been two of the best players in the shortest format over the last few years and have been consistent performers for SRH ever since joining the franchise. While Warner's departure wouldn't have come as a surprise to many, SRH not retaining Rashid left many baffled.

With SRH still being criticised for not treating Warner well during his last season with the team, former India pacer Irfan Pathan has come up with a cryptic tweet on the saga. Pathan took to Twitter to state that SRH is the same franchise that had supported Warner when his country had banned him from playing cricket.

"Ppl who is questioning a franchise decision about a foreign player should also remember that the same franchise supported him when his own country banned him to play," Irfan wrote in a tweet.

The Aussies had tampered with the ball during a Test match against Soth Africa and the incident was caught on camera. Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori weighed in on Mumbai Indians' retention decision after the franchise opted to keep four players - skipper Rohit Sharma, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction.

Mumbai released some match-winners such as Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Trent Boult, Rahul Chahar, Quinton de Kock, were released. Although, it was reported that Hardik opted to go in the auction pool.

Meanwhile, Vettori explained the possible reason why Mumbai Indians didn't retain Hardik Pandya or why the all-rounder might have wanted to go back in the auction pool.

In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, Vettori said, "It's simply about money, it has to be. There's no way that Mumbai [Indians] didn't want Hardik Pandya, every franchise wants him. But they would have only been able to offer him that third spot because and Bumrah and Rohit rightly take up those two slots."

He added, "So unfortunately for Mumbai, they are the product of their own success. And this was Venky's point when we were discussing with him that you develop players and you get them to a point where they are critical to a franchise but then it's incredibly difficult to hold onto them."

Pointing out the fact that KL Rahul was also released by the Punjab Kings franchise, Vettori suggested that there might be some kind of alliance between the two players as they are very close. There's a slight chance Rahul and Pandya wish to play together.

Vettori said, "I am sure that Hardik Pandya would have been a top priority but they just couldn't fit him in. He probably feels like he has developed himself and there may be alliances forming. He added, "All these things in the background may be happening at the moment and we will only find out in the coming days and weeks if it comes to fruition. I think there are a lot of players trying to play together."

Among other critics, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa is also surprised by DC's move of not retaining opening batter Shikhar Dhawan. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt remains a big name in world of sports. While he has won accolades for his achievements in field and track events, the 35-year-old runner remains one of the few sportspersons who continuously wants to better himself in all aspects of life.

Bolt, eight-time Olympic gold medallist, remains a renowned athlete but athletics wasn't his first love. It was cricket. Hence, the Jamaican star is now eyeing a cricket career and is keen to play in the cash-rich league Indian Premier League (IPL). For the unversed, IPL's popularity is well-known worldwide. Many Jamaican superstars such as Chris Gayle and Andre Russell are big names in IPL. Thus, Bolt is well aware of the tournament and wants to try his hand in the league.

IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma says to release 'gun players' was absolutely heart-breaking

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, which is expected to take place in the last week of January.

One of the shocking decisions was to see Indian batter KL Rahul released by the Punjab-based franchise as he was not retained. Although, it was speculated before that KL Rahul has opted to go in the auction pool.

Not just that, he is now linked to the newly added franchise Lucknow and it has been reported that he is set to lead the team owned by the RPSG Group.

Commenting on that, Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia told PTI: "We wanted to retain Rahul but he wanted to go back into the auction. If he has been approached by another franchise before that, it would be unethical."

On being asked about reports that Rahul is being approached by the Lucknow franchise, Wadia said: "I hope not because that is against the guidelines set by the BCCI."

It is important to note that the new teams Lucknow and Ahmedabad have time till December 25 to pick three available players who were not retained on Tuesday (November 30). Rahul was among the big names to be released alongside Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) released the list of players retained by the franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction, which is expected to be in the last week of January. The franchise has retained their former skipper Virat Kohli, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj. Kohli, who had announced that he will step down as captain of RCB after the IPL 2021, was retained for a staggering amount of INR 15 cr. The 32-year-old Kohli, who has been with RCB since the inaugural IPL in 2008, took charge as captain in 2013. And also understanding that RCB is going through a transitional phase with the big auction coming next year." Meanwhile, Maxwell has been retained for for INR 11 cr and Siraj for 7cr. The team will now head into the IPL 2022 auction with a purse of 57 Crores. Mike Hesson, who is the director of cricket operations of the Bangalore team, addressed the RCB fans and explained the thought process behind RCB's retentions. He further spoke about what the retained players will bring to the table and the importance of having additional comfort with the auction purse. "The player retention process has been pretty robust and exhaustive. We’ve got an exceptional bunch of players but the key for us was to ensure we have a sizeable auction purse going into the IPL Mega Auction," Hesson said. "We had many good players whom we considered and were happy to retain, but that would have taken away our flexibility from the auction to get a balanced squad. We look to retain as many players during the auction as we build the perfect squad for 2022 and beyond," he added. IPL: Royal Challengers Bangalore retention list - RCB retain Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and one more

All the eight existing IPL franchises released their retention list on Tuesday evening (November 30). The three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) retained the likes of former skipper Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and speedster Mohammed Siraj.

Hence, some popular names such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, etc. weren't retained. Nonetheless, the Bengaluru franchise will now look to rebuild and form a new-look RCB line-up in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction. Apart from bringing in some new faces, RCB will also have to name Kohli's successor.

Kohli, the leading run-getter in IPL history (6,283) runs, stepped down as RCB captain following the end of IPL 2021. He had already announced that the IPL 14's UAE leg will be his last as the franchise's skipper. Thus, the team management will have to name his successor sooner than later.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo about RCB's decision to retain three key campaigners on the retention day, ex-Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori suggested that Glenn Maxwell can be Kohli's successor. "Look, I think Maxwell will be the likely heir to Kohli. He obviously produced [results] in this last year and he was an exceptional player for them. He has the experience of captaining the Melbourne Stars. We talked about most teams wanting to find a captain in their retained players. It has happened too often that teams know they've got a captain, they know they can lock that away and they don't have to find one in the auction which can cloud your thinking at times," Vettori said.

"I do believe Maxwell will be named captain. It could be [for] just one season, to see how it goes but it's a pretty good stop-gap measure as they build to the future," Vettori added.

Speaking about Kohli's stint as RCB captain, he led the side to the playoffs in 2015, 2020 and 2021 and to their third final during the 2016 season. It will be interesting to see if Maxwell is given the top job or whether the Bengaluru team management will rope in someone from the auction to be Kohli's successor.

Rajasthan Royals have retained their skipper Sanju Samson, England's swashbuckling batter Jos Buttler and an uncapped Indian player Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. Although the date is not confirmed yet, the auction is expected to take place in the second half of January.

Samson has amassed 3068 runs in 121 IPL matches with a strike rate of 134.20 since making his debut for the Rajasthan-based franchise back in 2013. The right-hand batter was retained for INR 140 million. On the other hand, Buttler and Jaiswal have been retained for INR 100 million and INR 40 million respectively.

Two big names, the England duo Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, were released and the director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara revealed the reason behind it. He said, "We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making this decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra's long term injury forced us to retain only three."

"Absolutely brilliant as a team man, brilliant in a leadership role. He just brings his amazing energy to the field. We had to consider the number of retentions possible. We did everything to ascertain the nature of the injury, the recovery period," he added.

For the unversed, Dhoni agreed to be the second-retention choice for CSK, for 12 crores (120 million), whereas all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was retained as the Yellow Army's top-choice player, for 16 crores (160 million).

On the other hand, Kohli remained the top-choice for RCB in their retention list, however, he chose to have a pay cut of 2 crores (being retained for 15 crores, i.e. 150 million) before the mega auction.

IPL retention: Who's in, who's out ahead of mega auction? All you need to know

The D-day is finally here. After many speculations, the cricket fans will finally get to know about the list of retained players by all existing IPL franchises ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 edition. While couple of players are surely to be retained by their respective franchises, expect some big names to enter the auction pool as all teams can only retain four players each.

As per the rules, all the eight teams can retain four players -- three Indians and a foreign player or two Indians and overseas players each -- but it isn't necessary that all the non-retained players will enter the IPL 2022 mega auction. For the unversed, the two new teams -- in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- will have an option to choose three players each from the non-retained list before the auction.

The eight IPL teams won't have the luxury to use Right To Match (RTM) cards on their non-retained players in the auction table. Hence, they will have to rebuy the players not retained, thus, it will be a tough call for all eight franchises to wisely finalise their retained list.

IPL 2022 retention ahead of mega auction: Where to live streaming in India?

The deadline for Indian Premier League (IPL) retentions ahead of the mega auction is over as the existing eight franchises had until 12:00 PM on Tuesday (November 30) to submit the final list of retained players. A lot of questions will be answered by the end of the day as all eight teams will reveal the names of the players they have decided to keep ahead of the new season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are reportedly considering retaining only captain Kane Williamson. The franchise are also in talks with their star spinner Rashid Khan but it remains uncertain whether he has been kept or not. Meanwhile, former SRH captain David Warner has confirmed he has been released by the franchise despite his stellar campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 where he bagged the Player of the Tournament award for 289 runs in seven matches for Australia.

One of the most consistent batters in the history of the Indian Premier League, Warner has been instrumental in Sunrisers' success over the years. However, the treatment dished out to him by the franchise in IPL 2021 was nothing less than humiliating as he was first sacked from captaincy before being dropped from the playing XI entirely. Warner managed only eight appearances for SRH in IPL 2021 in what was a disappointing season for him.

Ahead of the mega auction, Warner has confirmed SRH will not be retaining him and that he can't do anything about it. Despite his fallout with the franchise last season, the Aussie left-hander remains hugely popular among the SRH fans. One of the fans recently asked him if he will continue playing for SRH if they retain him, Warner responded by stating that - "They won't but I can't do anything about that".

Warner is the leading run-getter for Sunrisers Hyderabad with 4014 runs in 95 matches for the one-time champions. He remains the only captain to have led the Orange Army to an IPL title and is likely to trigger a bidding war at the auction table in case he is not picked by one of the two new teams.

David Warner confirms SRH will not retain him ahead of IPL mega auction: Can't do anything about that

The IPL 2022 edition is keenly awaited. The upcoming season will see two new teams joining the cash-rich league, in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Ahead of the next year's IPL season, the mega auction will take place -- most likely in January, 2022 -- as many marquee players will enter the auction pool whereas many youngsters will get a chance to feature in the IPL.

Ahead of the mega auction, all the eight existing franchises have to share their list of retained players, maximum by November 30 (Tuesday). As per the rules, each franchise can retain a maximum of four players -- three Indians and one foreign player of two Indian and overseas players each. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his list of four players who are likely to be retained by the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Pathan told Star Sports, "Sanju Samson for sure, second number will be Jos Buttler because he's been in fantastic form, one of the best hitters going around especially if you are talking about white ball cricket, so you don't want to miss out on that wicket-keeper batsman, who can bat up the order and down the order as well.

"The other guy, people might be tempted for Ben Stokes because he's a wonderful all-rounder, but I think I would put Jofra Archer in the same category as Jasprith Bumrah because you don't find many bowlers like that. So, I definitely would like Rajasthan Royals to retain Jofra Archer, and the fourth one, I am very tempted for Yashasvi Jaiswal because he's a young guy, who’s shown a lot of potential, and he could be the guy you could invest in.”

For the unversed, a report in ESPNcrinfo had recently suggested that RR have retained their skipper Samson for a whopping price. It remains to be seen how many players will the one-time champions retain ahead of the mega auction.

Irfan Pathan picks his 4 retentions for RR ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction, excludes star player

KL Rahul has is likely to part ways with Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction as he has already told the franchise about his desire to leave after leading the team for two seasons. Rahul is one of the top Indian players who will be released by their respective franchise and are set to trigger a bidding war at the mega auction.

While the existing eight teams have been allowed a maximum of four retentions each, the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow can pick three players each from the pool of non-retained players. Rahul is reportedly in negotiations with the Lucknow franchise and is unlikely to go into the auction pool.

As per a report, the Lucknow franchise has offered a staggering amount of salary to Team India's T20 vice-captain. Rahul has been offered more than a whopping Rs 20 crore (INR 200 million) by the Lucknow franchise, as per Insidesport.in. If true, Rahul will become the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Virat Kohli, who stepped down as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore after the conclusion of the IPL 2021, has had the highest salary so far in the history of IPL. He was on a salary of Rs 17 crore from the 2018 to 2021 season with RCB. Rahul, who used to earn Rs 11 crore at Punjab Kings, has reportedly been offered a hike of a staggering Rs 9 crore.

If Rahul decides to stay at PBKS, he is free to negotiate a higher salary than the defined slab of Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million) for the first-choice retained player as the BCCI has stated in the rules that the franchise can give the retained players a higher salary and forfeit the same amount from their total purse.

However, Rahul looks unlikely to stay at Punjab Kings after failing to inspire the side to their maiden title in his two seasons as captain. While the team didn't taste much success, Rahul had brilliant campaigns on the individual front. He scored 626 runs in 13 matches last season and was the third-highest run-getter in IPL 2021.

Rahul has so far played 94 matches in IPL and has 3273 runs to his name at an average of over 41. He is likely to lead the Lucknow franchise if he decides to join the team ahead of IPL 2022.

From KL Rahul to Hardik Pandya: Top 5 Indian players who might not be retained by their IPL franchises

Shreyas Iyer is all set to part ways with Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after spending seven seasons with the franchise. Iyer reportedly expressed his desire not to be retained by DC as he wants a leadership role which he was not going to get at the Delhi-based outfit.

Iyer had been appointed as captain of Delhi Capitals midway through the 2018 season and led the team to their first-ever final in IPL 2020. He missed the first of IPL 2021 this year due to injury and was replaced as Rishabh Pant as captain, who continued leading the side even after Iyer's return in the second leg.

Iyer is reportedly in talks with the two new IPL franchises and his association with Delhi Capitals is all set to end. Former India pacer Irfan Pathan recently gave his take on Iyer's desire to leave DC and said there is something going on at the franchise which is not out in public yet.

"I think so (Shreyas Iyer might be looking for another challenge). He was leading the side really well, playing really well but suddenly when he came back after the injury he was not the captain," Pathan said on Star Sports.

"So that means there is something going on which is not out there in the public. Which means Rishabh Pant will continue as the captain and it's a great opportunity for Shreyas Iyer. Just go out and maybe lead another franchise," he added.

Pathan, who played for a number of IPL teams during his playing career, was also part of the Delhi Capitals side. As per ESPN Cricinfo, Delhi Capitals have decided to retain skipper Pant, Prithvi Shaw, all-rounder Axar Patel and pacer Anrich Nortje ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction.

Something going on which isn't out in public: Irfan Pathan on Shreyas Iyer wanting to leave Delhi Capitals

The auction will be conducted ahead of the IPL 2022 season with the addition of two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Each of the existing eight teams have been allowed a maximum of only four retentions this time around with no right-to-match option.

As all eight teams continue to finalise their retentions ahead of the mega auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) are all set to part ways with Shreyas Iyer. Thus DC, who wanted to retain him, are likely to release him now.

As per a report in The Telegraph, Iyer and his Delhi Capitals teammate Shikhar Dhawan, who is also set to be released are being pursued by the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Shreyas Iyer to Mumbai Indians? Rohit Sharma-led side keen on roping in Indian star at IPL mega auction

A couple of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are not happy with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over its decision to ban any sponsorship deals with cryptocurrency exchanges. The board doesn't want the franchises to strike a commercial deal with the exchanges till the time the Indian government brings a regulation in place for the sector.

As per a report in the Economic Times, two franchises revealed they had been approached by major cryptocurrency exchanges over sponsorship deals ahead of IPL 2022. However, the negotiations had to be stalled after BCCI's diktat over crypto. The board has asked all teams and the media right holders to avoid signing any sponsorship deals with crypto exchanges.

“It’s a major opportunity loss. The kind of money they were offering for the main sponsorship was 1.5 times of what the current sponsor is paying. They wanted to build their brand with our association and were ready to pay for that,” an executive of one of the IPL franchises, who were offered a deal by a crypto exchange company, was quoted as saying by Economic Times.

While the franchises often have the freedom to sort out their sponsorship deals on their own, BCCI doesn't want to hurry on the decision with the central government in the process of finalising a crypto bill to regulate the sector. A BCCI insider said the matter was political in nature.

“While the members of the IPL governing council may not have an issue with cryptocurrency exchanges advertising, it’s a matter of optics. BCCI secretary Jay Shah is the son of the union home minister, and the central government is in the process of bringing a crypto bill in the upcoming winter session of parliament. Till there is some clarity, he may not be seen allowing crypto ads,” said the BCCI source.

Crypto exchanges like ConSwitch and CoinDCX reportedly spent over Rs 50 crore in sponsorship deals, as per Economic Times.
