The IPL 2022 mega auction is less than a month away. During the recently-held IPL General Council Meeting, the BCCI finalised the auction date, i.e. February 12 and 13, as the showpiece event took place in Bengaluru. All eyes will be on the non-retained players, which comprises several marquee players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan and the likes. Six of them will be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- who have the luxury to choose three players each before the auction proceedings.

The IPL auction has always hogged the limelight, since 2008, as franchises shed a huge chunk of money on players from various countries or of different age bracket. Over the years, many rising talents or established names have earned big during the IPL auctions. Before the IPL 2022 auction kicks off in Bengaluru, here's a look at the most expensive players in each auction:

The list includes some marquee players such as MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Ben Stokes, Pat Cummins, Dinesh Karthik, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Morris and some underrated names -- Jaydev Unadkat, Varun Chakravarthy.

Talking about the IPL 2022 edition, the BCCI will once again be under the scanner for hosting the 15th edition smoothly, with the Covid-19 pandemic still not over. As of now, no final decision has been taken regarding the venues for the upcoming season. The Sourav Ganguly-led board will finalise the venues and share the full schedule after monitoring the Covid-19 situation nationwide. If hosting the cash-rich league in India becomes out of the picture, BCCI will look to take the IPL in Sri Lanka, South Africa or the UAE (as per reports).

From MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Ben Stokes to Chris Morris: Most expensive players in IPL auction

Indian cricket team star Shreyas Iyer is one of the top players who is all set to enter the pool in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction ahead of the 2022 edition of the tournament. Iyer is all set to find a new team ahead of the new season after parting ways with his former side Delhi Capitals (DC).

Iyer had decided to leave DC after the franchise appointed Rishabh Pant as their new captain denying the Mumbai batter a chance to lead the side. He led Delhi Capitals in three seasons and inspired them to their first-ever final in IPL 2020 where they lost to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash to miss out on winning their maiden IPL crown.

Nonetheless, Iyer is set to find a new team and will enter the auction pool this time around. He is reportedly admired a lot by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who are in search of a captaincy candidate after superstar Virat Kohli decided to step down as the skipper of the side post the conclusion of IPL 2021 last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, RCB are interested in roping in Iyer at the upcoming mega auction which is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru next month. “Post Virat Kohli quitting the RCB captaincy, RCB are really interested in having Iyer as their next captain. Expect them to bid aggressively for the Mumbaikar in next month’s auction in Bangalore,” a source close to the development, was quoted as saying by Times of India.

RCB are not the only team interested in Iyer and will be bidding for him at the mega auction as the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are also said to be eyeing the former Delhi Capitals captain. Both KKR and Punjab Kings will also be in the auction for a captaincy candidate after letting go of their respective ex-skippers Eoin Morgan and KL Rahul ahead of IPL 2022.

“The Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are also expected to eye him in the auction,” the source said.

As per the report, Iyer was not offered captaincy by any of the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad and hence he will be heading into the mega auction. As per reports, the Lucknow franchise is likely to appoint KL Rahul as their new captain while the Ahmedabad franchise is expected to rope in Hardik Pandya as their captain ahead of the mega auction.

Shreyas Iyer to replace Virat Kohli as RCB captain? Three IPL teams eye ex-DC skipper at mega auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and enjoy a staggering fan base across the globe. Captain MS Dhoni has been one of the key figures in their massive success in the IPL over the years. He has led the team to a stunning nine finals and four trophies in twelve seasons.

Dhoni's name has been synonymous with CSK's success since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. However, the CSK skipper is now in the twilight of his cricketing career and might not continue playing for too long having already retired from international cricket in 2020.

Though the 40-year-old has been retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2022, Dhoni is not expected to continue playing for the next three years of his contract. CSK will need a new captain at the helm once Dhoni decides to hang up his boots from all forms of cricket and the search for the new leader seems to have begun already.

Speculations are rife on social media that star all-rounder can take over from Dhoni as the new captain of CSK as early as IPL 2022. Dhoni reportedly has himself decided to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja in the upcoming season to ensure a smooth transition for the team.

While the reports of Dhoni handing over captaincy to Jadeja in IPL 2022 is mere speculation at the moment, the all-rounder had previously expressed his desire to captain CSK once the current skipper decides to retire. In 2021, Jadeja had responded to a question from a CSK fan page asking who should be captaining CSK after Dhoni.

The all-rounder had replied with his jersey number '8' before deleting the tweet.

CSK have retained Dhoni, Jadeja, Rutuaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali ahead of the mega player auction in Februray and will be looking to build a strong squad around the core group. Jadeja was retained as the first-choice player by the four-time champions for a whopping Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million) while Dhoni was the second-choice retention at Rs 12 crore (120 million).

Earlier, former CSK batter Robin Uthappa, who was part of the team's title-winning campaign in IPL 2021, had also hinted at Jadeja being looked at as the new captain of CSK after Dhoni.

"I am sure that is MS Dhoni’s doing itself. He knows the value that Jadeja has to the unit. I think from what I understand, Jadeja might be someone who could end up leading the squad in the future as well when MS Dhoni retires. They have given him the due he deserved,” Uthappa had said when asked about Dhoni opting not to be retained as the first-choice player by CSK.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is set to be held in Bengaluru in mid-February, 2021. During the recent IPL General Council meeting, on Tuesday (January 11), some big decisions were made, such as Tata group becoming the title sponsor for the cash-rich league, auction dates and venues being confirmed, however, nothing was revealed about the schedule and venues for IPL 2022.

As per reports, the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI is monitoring the Covid-19 situation in India and have Plan B in mind as well. While BCCI wants the IPL to be held in India itself, the third wave of Covid-19 virus is knocking on the door and no one can predict how things pan out with regard to the virus spread in the coming days. Though BCCI have also been contemplating the idea of organising the cash-rich league in Maharashtra, the state is reporting the highest number of Covid cases at present. Hence, as per a report in Indian Express, the board will go ahead and organise the league in Sri Lanka or South Africa (as per their Plan B).

There were walking tracks and even a pond on the property and that has made things easier for the players who for the last couple of years or so have been confined to their rooms on several overseas tours,” said an official.

Not UAE? BCCI contemplating staging IPL 2022 in Sri Lanka or South Africa as Plan B: Report

Australian star pacer Mitchel Starc is considering putting his name in the IPL 2022 mega auction, which will be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

It’s been seven years since the 31-year-old Starc played in the Indian Premier League, citing workload management and injuries concerns. Earlier, he had played 27 matches for the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) from 2012 to 2015 in the cash-rich league.

"I've got two days to get my paperwork in, so that might be something to do today before training. I've not put my name down just yet, but I've got a couple more days to decide on that. It's certainly on the table regardless of what the schedule has got coming up," Cricket.com.au cited Starc's remarks ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test in Hobart.

"I haven't been for six years or so. Obviously, with a heavy weighting towards T20s over the last period of time and the World Cup coming up later this year, that's one to take into consideration as well. There's a bit going on with scheduling and what-not to get our heads around, certainly for us multi-format players," he further added.

Australia has a tight schedule in the first half of the year 2022; including three ODIs and a T20 to be played with New Zealand before five T20Is against Sri Lanka at home. Thereafter, they travel to Pakistan for a multi-format tour, then to New Zealand for yet another white-ball tour before the players head to the IPL. Despite the busy schedule, Starc said he was very much thinking of the IPL.

“The schedules are quite jam-packed, when you throw in all the tours, obviously we've got a couple of white-ball series post the Ashes before that Pakistan tour. Then you take in consideration the IPL, then a Sri Lankan tour after that, so it's a massive six months of cricket for everyone, but certainly for those multi-format players," he said.

The Australian fast bowler intends to be the only fast bowler to play all five Ashes Tests. While there was concern about Starc's workload after he took just one wicket in the fourth Test in Sydney, the left-arm pacer laughed off any notion that he would need to be rested.

"I'm not looking for a break," he added. "It's the last Test match of the Ashes series and it's the pink ball too. I'd very much like to play. I guess it's in the hands of the selectors but I won't be asking for a rest."

In addition, the venue and dates for the forthcoming IPL 2022 mega auction also got confirmed.

The upcoming mega auction is set to be two-day affair and will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. The likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, David Warner and many other top names haven't been retained by their respective franchises. While many key decisions took place in the IPL GC meeting, nothing has been finalised when it comes to the venues for the IPL 2022 edition. The last two IPL seasons have been played largely in the UAE (with the 2020 season held entirely in UAE whereas last year's final leg also took place in the Middle East), this year's IPL season's scheduling will also test the BCCI as Covid-19 cases are on the rise in India. Thus, the board hasn't taken a call on the venues and will decide after monitoring the situation in March. The Sourav Ganguly-led board will get in touch with all the stakeholders and the government before a final call is made. At present, the third-wave scare is looming large in the country.

It is believed that if the situation doesn't improve by early March, BCCI will take a call, create a cluster to shift the tournament where there are four of five stadiums with no air travel.

IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru as dates confirmed after governing council meeting

The IPL Governing Council on Tuesday decided to issue the Letter of Intent to new IPL franchises Lucknow and Ahmedabad, formalising their entry into the world's biggest T20 league. RPSG Group and private investment firm CVC had successfully bid for the Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchise, respectively, last October. However, the LOI got delayed after it emerged that CVC had links with betting companies outside India.

The BCCI, with the help of its legal team, took its time to probe the issue before deciding to approve the CVC bid.
"The bids were approved by the GC today, LOI will be issued soon," IPL chairman Brijesh Patel told PTI after the meeting.

The issuance of LOI means the two teams are formally part of the IPL, allowing them to pick players ahead of the auction on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.

Both the franchises have already recruited the support staff and they can now go ahead and sign up to three players each from the draft pick ahead of the mega auction. K L Rahul is expected to lead Lucknow and Hardik Pandya Ahmedabad.

The IPL chief said the GC plans to give them 10-14 days to pick the players before the auction.

"We have been talking to the new teams, we are planning to give them 10 days to two weeks," said Patel, adding that there has been no change in the date and place of auction.

With India experiencing a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI is exploring back-up options for the IPL, expected to be held in April-May, and it includes hosting the entire event in one state.

However, Patel said it is still too early to decide on the matter.

"We would like to play in India but we have to see the situation," he added.

The entire edition of 2020 was held in the UAE due to the pandemic. The tournament returned to India the following year but had to be suspended in May amid a devastating second wave in the country. The rest of the IPL had to be completed in the UAE in September-October.

"As of now, we are hosting it in India but the situation is fluid. It is too early to think about shifting it outside," added a BCCI official.

The IPL Governing Council met on Tuesday (January 11) where it was confirmed that Tata will be the new sponsor of the league going forward. IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed Vivo's exit and Tata's onboarding as the new sponsors of one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world.

Vivo won the title rights of the IPL in 2018 for a whopping sum of Rs 440 crore (INR 4.4 billion) till the 2020 season. However, Vivo had to pull out for a year in 2020 due to the tensions after India-China diplomatic standoff. BCCI wants IPL 2022 in India but hosting tournament overseas among options being considered - Report

James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed to hold their nerve as they helped England pulls off a thrilling draw in the fourth Ashes 2021-22 Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Sunday. Australia were just one wicket away from their fourth successive win in the five-match series, however, they were denied victory by the last standing paid of Anderson and Broad.

Anderson, who faced the final over of the day from Steve Smith, was seen surrounded by fielders on the final day of the Test match as Australia gave their all in a bid to win the game. Not just the last two batters but Australia had a similar fielding setup for England's no.9 Jack Leach towards the end of the day's play.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) recalled a similar setup by former skipper Gautam Gambhir for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni in an IPL game. KKR shared a picture from the game where Dhoni can be seen surrounded by several KKR fielders as he bats in the middle.

Drawing a comparison with Australia's fielding setup against England on the final day of the 4th Test on Sunday, KKR shared a picture of Gambhir's move against Dhoni calling it a 'masterstroke'. The IPL franchise ended up getting brutally trolled by CSK and India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja reacted to KKR's post on Twitter and called it a 'show off' not a 'master stroke'. His response immediately went viral on the micro-blogging site with CSK fans also ripping KKR apart for their dig at former India captain Dhoni.

The incident took place in a game between KKR and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL 2016 when Dhoni was leading the Pune-based franchise after CSK were handed a two-year ban from the IPL. Dhoni returned to CSK in 2018 after playing two seasons for RPSG and has since led the Men in Yellow to two titles in four seasons.

Dhoni's CSK won the IPL 2021 title last year after beating KKR in the final of the competition in Dubai to lift their fourth trophy.

David Warner had a horrible IPL 2021 edition. Starting the season as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain, the swashbuckling left-hander struggles for runs -- at an ordinary strike-rate -- whereas the Orange Army's string of losses led to his sacking halfway in the season.

When IPL 14 resumed with the final leg in the UAE, Warner got only a handful of chances before his failures led to his omission. Since then, he never managed to return to the playing XI before being released by the one-time winners ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022.

Recalling his SRH omission, Warner told while speaking to Boria Majumdar, "If you are going to drop a captain and then not pick him in the team after what he has done, what message does that send to the young kids in the team? What message does that send to the rest of the group? What hurt me the most is that the other guys are now thinking, ‘oh, this could happen to me."

“At the end of the day, whatever happens, cop it cop it on the chin. If you want to have those conversations, just have them. It’s not hard. Don’t shy away from them. I am not going to bite. I am going to sit here and accept that for what it is because you are not picking me in the team."

For the unversed, Warner was a daunting force for the SRH franchise after joining them in 2014. Since 2014, the Aussie opener amassed over 500 runs every season for the franchise before having a forgettable run in IPL 2021 (with only 195 runs in 8 games). He, however, signed off as one of the greats of SRH, with 40 half-centuries and 2 hundreds along with winning the Orange Cap thrice.

Under Warner, SRH also won their only title, so far, in 2016 edition. The Aussie cricketer will now hope to make a fresh start in IPL 2022. He might get picked by one of the two new IPL teams or else will go under the hammer during the forthcoming mega auction.

Warner is the fifth-highest run-getter in IPL history with 5,449 runs. Thus, he will surely make heads turn during the auction.

The last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have challenged the BCCI to a great extend. The advent of the Covid-19 virus, in early 2020, led to the year's IPL season being postponed before it took place in UAE from mid-September to early November.

IPL 2021 started in India but became the first-ever season to be played in two halves as the second wave of Covid-19 led to the tournament being postponed indefinitely at the halfway stage before the final leg took place in the UAE, in late 2021. Before IPL 2022 kicks off, the Indian cricket board still has quite a few hurdles to cross this time around due to the possible arrival of the third wave of Covid-19. Thus, the BCCI is working on Plan B already to host the 15th edition in India.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI can rely on two routes in front of it. The first is to carry on with the initial plan, i.e. to have all the 10 teams playing the home-away format, where the home games can continue to be held at their respective stadiums. The second option can be to host the entire league in the three venues in Mumbai (the Wankhede, CCI and DY Patil Stadium).

In addition, the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI is considering to start the 15th edition from March 25, instead of April 02, to bring down the number of double-headers and day games as per the initial plan.

IPL 2022 entirely in Mumbai due to Covid-19 third wave? BCCI looking at March 25 start: Report

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a tough time deciding their final four retentions ahead of the deadline day with a number of superstars in their star-studded squad. The five-time champions let go of the likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Ishan Kishan among others while retaining their captain Rohit Sharma and three others.

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who is part of the Mumbai Indians backroom staff, recently revealed why the franchise didn't retain Hardik ahead of the mega auction. Hardik had been a vital cog in the Mumbai Indians set up over the years and played an instrumental role in the team's success in the IPL.

However, he was let go of by the five-time champions, who decided to keep Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. Hardik, who has been dealing with constant fitness issues, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 and has also been left out of the Indian team after average performances in the T20 World Cup 2021.

However, Zaheer has backed the star all-rounder to make a strong comeback after gaining full fitness while opening up on Mumbai Indians' decision to release him.

"Absolutely (Hardik can regain his full fitness). Hardik is very keen on that. The retention calls usually take into consideration various aspects and angles. The debates are usually very long (laughs). It is not an easy process when you set yourself up for a big auction and say goodbye to all players with a heavy heart with whom you spent a lot of time and energy," Zaheer was quoted as saying by TimesofIndia.com.

With two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad also in the fray this time around, it remains to be seen if Hardik will head to the auction pool or he will be picked by one of the two new franchises in the players' draft before the auction. Both Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises can pick three players each from the non-retained ones ahead of the mega auction.

Hardik is one of the best all-rounders in the league with 1476 runs and 42 wickets in 96 matches in his IPL career so far.

CSK shares MS Dhoni's first pic of 2022 with his pet pony, post breaks the internet

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is working towards developing an Indian Premier League (IPL)-like T20 league for women cricketers. BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently opened up regarding the Indian cricket board's plans to host a T20 league for women cricketers in India in the future.

A number of Indian players have been plying their trade in women's T20 leagues around the globe and have been garnering praise for their brilliant performances. Eight Indian players were part of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia this year where India's T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur had bagged the Player of the Series award.

Harmanpreet scored 399 runs and picked up 15 wickets in the season to take the Player of the Tournament award. The likes of Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues had also impressed in the league with their heroics. As women's cricket continues to reach greater heights, Shah assured the fans of BCCI soon introducing an IPL-like T20 league for women.

BCCI has already been conducting the Women's T20 Challenge which is a short tournament during an IPL season. The tournament, however, has only two teams and is yet to be scaled at a higher level with the introduction of more players and teams.

“The women’s T20 Challenge has drawn a huge interest among the fans and that is an encouraging sign. We all want a league like IPL for our women cricketers, but it is not just about putting together three or four teams and announcing the launch of a women’s IPL league," said Shah in an interview with Hindustan Times.

"There are a lot of factors that come into play like a dedicated window, availability of international stars and bilateral commitments of member boards to name a few. We are exploring all our options and working towards organising a similar league for our female players in future,” he added.

Shah pointed out how the likes of Harmanpreet and Mandhana have been very vocal about the introduction of an IPL-like league for women's cricketers in the country. He stated that such a tournament would help Indian players improve a lot as they will get to rub shoulders with some of the best cricketers in the world.

“Players like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur have been very vocal about India having its own T20 league and helping overhaul the standard of the game in India,” he said.

“Having a league similar to the IPL will surely benefit our cricketers as they will get to play alongside international stars. Other than Smriti and Harmanpreet, other Indian team women cricketers did well in leagues like The Hundred and WBBL. Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma and Poonam Yadav are all sought-after players and role models in India. Their stint will definitely help them grow in confidence,” Shah added.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained captain MS Dhoni, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the mega auction. It must have been difficult for CSK to pick only four players from a squad full of match-winners and some of the most talented players in the league.

There were a number of talented players who were let go of by the four-time champions due to limitations on retentions. The likes of Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran and Josh Hazlewood among others were some of the top players released by CSK ahead of the mega auction.

The franchise would be certainly hoping to buy some of their old players back during the upcoming mega auction. Among the players who are keen to rejoin CSK and play under Dhoni is veteran India batter Rayudu, who was recently seen in action for Andhra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, believes he has a lot of cricket left in him and can continue playing for the next three years.

"I would love to keep playing till I am in good form and fit. I will be ready for the next cycle, which is three years and I am working hard on my fitness," Rayudu was quoted as saying by PTI.

"I recently played the Vijay Hazare Trophy which is five one-day games in six days which I got through well. I am in good shape and I hope to continue to play at least for the next three years," the 36-year old added.

Rayudu has played a vital role in CSK's success since joining the franchise in the 2018 season. He played 61 matches for CSK and scored 1500 runs at an average of 34.09 and a strike rate close to 130. He played an instrumental role in CSK's title triumph in 2018 and scored runs consistently in the next three seasons as well.

Rayudu said his stint with CSK has been a special one and called Dhoni the best captain to have led India. Rayudu said Dhoni had a huge impact on his game and knew how to bring the best out of the batsman.

"My stint with CSK has been a very special one. We have won two IPLs till now and played one final. 2018 was a very special season, a comeback season for CSK and us winning the IPL that year made it very special," said Rayudu.

"Dhoni bhai has had the impact of getting the best out of me, not only me but he has an impact on everyone and brings the best performance out of everyone in the team. That is why he is the best captain India has ever had," he added.

The Hyderabad star revealed he has not had any formal conversations yet with the team but is hopeful of reuniting with CSK at the mega auction next year. The IPL mega auction is set to take place in February next year and will feature a host of superstars who are set to go under the hammer.

"I would definitely love to play for CSK. Formally, there has not been any communication with me so far, But I am hoping to get picked by them and have a successful league again," said Rayudu.

CVC Capitals have reportedly been handed a clean chit by Justice KS Radhakrishnan in the investigation surrounding their investment in some of the betting firms in the UK. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to hand the Letter of Intent (LOI) to CVC Capital after their acquisition of the Ahmedabad franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, as per a report in Cricbuzz, the Indian cricket board has recieved and adopted a report from Radhakrishnan, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, who headed a three-member external panel to investigate the matter. The panel has given a clean chit to CVC Capital to own the franchise in the league and an announcement is expected soon in the matter.

"An opinion on CVC was sought by the BCCI. The panel has given its opinion. The committee's involvement ended once the opinion was given. Now it is up to the BCCI to accept or reject it," sources were quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The BCCI had extended the deadline for the players draft for the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad due to the uncertainty surrounding CVC Capital's ownership rights. CVC Capital had acquired the Ahmedabad franchise with a winning bid of INR 56.25 billion (Rs 5625 crore) earlier this year. However, it was awaiting the Letter of Intent from BCCI.

The Sanjeev Goenka-led RPSG Group which had bought the Lucknow IPL team had been immediately cleared and the LOI was handed over to them by the board. Both the new teams can make at least three picks from the pool of non-retained players ahead of the mega auction in February this year.

Thus the board would be looking to give LOI to CVC Capital as soon as possible for them to make their picks ahead of the auction and gear up for the mega event. The mega player auction is scheduled to take place likely on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru where all ten teams will be looking to build their respective squads from scratch after retaining a few players from their previous squads.

CVC Capital cleared to own Ahmedabad IPL team, official announcement soon from BCCI - Report

2021 was an incredible year for MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the Men in Yellow rose from the ashes to bag their fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) crown in the UAE. CSK had finished seventh in IPL 2020 but scripted a fairytale comeback this year to be standing where they deservingly belonged at the end of a magnificent campaign.

The year gone by was filled with enthralling sporting action across the globe. IPL - the biggest T20 league in the world also lived up to the expectations as it was another season full of high-intensity action and drama. CSK, who had been written off by many at the start of the season after a disappointing seventh-place finish in the previous season, once again proved why they are one of the most successful franchises in the history of the competition.

It was nothing less than an extraordinary comeback from CSK, who have been infamously mocked as the 'Dad's army' due to the presence of a number of players in their squad who were on the wrong side of their 30s. Nonetheless, CSK once again defied all the odds to claim their fourth IPL title and shut their critics in style.

Here is a look back at Chennai Super Kings's fairytale comeback in IPL 2021:

IPL 2020 - MS Dhoni's Dad's army down and out

Nothing seemed to be going right for CSK in IPL 2020 as it proved to be a disastrous season for MS Dhoni and his men. Having reached back-to-back finals in IPL 2018 and 2019, expectations were high but the fatigue finally seemed to have caught up with the dad's army, who failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2020.

CSK's batting line-up crumbled under pressure on several occasions as the likes of Kedar Jadhav, skipper Dhoni and others struggled to deliver. The absence of Suresh Raina in the middle-order was also felt as CSK's scoring rate dropped massively. The team managed only six wins in 14 games and finished seventh on the points table.

It was the first time in CSK's history that Dhoni's men had failed to make it to the top four. Major changes were expected as all eyes were on CSK in the upcoming auction following the conclusion of the season. Many believed CSK needed a complete revamp of their ageing squad but Dhoni was ready with another surprise from his bag of tricks.

When many were expecting a major overhaul and a number of players to be released by CSK ahead of the player auction, Dhoni & Co. surprisingly let go of only six players, including Shane Watson, who himself announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

CSK then made their first move by roping in experienced Indian batter Robin Uthappa on a trade deal from Rajasthan Royals. Despite Uthappa's performances being average in the previous season, Dhoni and the CSK management showcased their faith in the veteran batter.

CSK then went on to buy only three players to replace the six released players in the auction. Dhoni, whose love for all-rounders has been well-documented, got CSK to get hold of two quality all-rounders for the squad. CSK roped in Moeen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham while also roping in Cheteshwar Pujara as a backup batter.

CSK's critics were not convinced yet and were expecting more from the franchise at the auction. However, they would later be proved wrong by none other than Dhoni, who didn't even need all three players bought in the auction to be a regular in his playing XI and was content with only Moeen Ali playing an important role for the team in the next season.

CSK lost their opening encounter against last season's finalists Delhi Capitals by seven wickets which left many convinced it was going to be yet another shambolic season for Dhoni & Co. However, CSK went on an unbeaten streak of five matches next and almost made it six wins in six games against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians before going down fighting.

While the opening duo of Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad was going all guns blazing, Moeen Ali's inclusion in the playing XI provided CSK the much-needed balance. Raina's return meant, they now had a more dependable middle-order with the likes of Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo getting the license to take on bowlers.

IPL 2021 had to be suspended midway through the season due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the camps of several teams. It was later announced that the second leg of the tournament will be staged in the UAE. Once again questions were asked about CSK's chances of continuing their magnificent run in the UAE after what had unfolded in IPL 2020.

However, Dhoni's men once again proved their critics wrong to carry on from where they had left in the first leg. CSK went on to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs and defeated the Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 to become the first finalists of the season.

Gaikwad and Du Plessis continued their purple patch in the final and delivered another brilliant match-winning stand against Kolkata Knight Riders in the summit clash. The duo added 61 runs for the first wicket after CSK were asked to bowl first by KKR skipper Eoin Morgan.

After Gaikwad's dismissal on 32 off 27 balls, Du Plessis continued his heroic run and slammed 86 off just 59 balls laced with seven fours and three sixes. Robin Uthappa (31) and Moeen Ali (37) also made crucial contributions to power the Yellow Army to a big total of 192 runs.

KKR seemed in control of the game for the first ten overs of their run-chase. They were clear favourites at one stage after openers Venkatesh Iyer (50) and Shubman Gill (50) put on 91 runs for the first wicket. However, CSK bowlers made a remarkable comeback in the contest and ripped through KKR's batting line-up to restrict them to just 165/9 in 20 overs.

Shardul Thakur returned with three wickets and was the pick of the bowlers despite going for runs, while Josh Hazlewood and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets apiece. CSK won the final convincingly by 27 runs to lift the IPL 2021 trophy.

CSK have played a remarkable nine finals - most by any team, in a total of twelve seasons in IPL history and have won four titles. Dhoni & Co. are the true comeback kings of the competition and should never be written off.

How MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings scripted a fairytale comeback in IPL 2021

The mega auction for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is keenly awaited. After the eight existing franchises shared their list of retained players on November 30, the two new IPL teams in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad will get a chance to pick three players each -- among the non-retained list of players -- before the action moves to the mega auction. As per latest reports, the IPL 2022 mega auction is set to be held in the garden city, i.e. Bengaluru on February 7 and 8.

"Unless the COVID-19 situation worsens, we will have the IPL mega auction in India. The two-day event will be held on February 7 and 8 and like other years, we plan to hold it in Bengaluru. Preparations are underway," a senior BCCI official told the news agency PTI.

This time around, several top players are set to go under the hammer as the eight existing IPL franchises will look to revamp whereas the two new teams will build their respective line-ups after wisely choosing three players each prior to the mega auction. The likes of KL Rahul, Rashid Khan, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, David Warner, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jonny Bairstow, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Sam Curran, Pandya brothers and many others have not been retained. Hence, all eyes will be on them before as well as during the auction.

For the unversed, the auction was supposed to be held in early January, 2022. However, it has been delayed due to lack of clarity regarding the Ahmedabad franchise's future ever since the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI initiated an inquiry on CVC Capital Partners' association with betting firms. Countdown begins! IPL 2022 mega auction likely to be held on Feb 7 and 8 in Bengaluru: Report

Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over. The world has been through a lot ever since the pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe in early 2020. Just when one and all thought that they were in control of the Covid-19 crisis, another variant has emerged out of nowhere, i.e. the Omicron variant. Thus, things are again going out of hand with rising cases and panic across the globe.

In India, the cases are rising at a some pace and things are expected to get worse by early February, with many speculating a third wave by then. Hence, once again many top political gatherings, big-ticket events and sporting tournaments can get affected due to the Omicron variant. In this regard, the IPL 2022 edition can also get severely dented and, hence, the BCCI is looking to discuss Plan B with all franchises and can go ahead with conducting the mega tournament in only three cities.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI is looking to call a meeting with franchise owners in January, 2022 where they can discuss and prepare an alternate strategy to conduct the 15th edition of the league. Though the primary objective remains to host the tournament across the country in the usual home-away format, the Omicron threat can cause severe problems.

As per the portal, the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI is eyeing to begin the 15th edition on April 02 next year in Chennai. However, if the situation worsens due to the Omicron scare, the board might contemplate organising the tournament in just one or two states.

"The meeting will be mainly introductory in nature with the BCCI on-boarding the owners of the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. They are also exploring the idea of holding the whole tournament just in Mumbai and Pune or in the Gujarat cities of Ahmedabad, Baroda and Rajkot if the Covid/Omicron situation worsens.

"The owners will be apprised of the alternatives as well as things to look forward to in the mega auction," multiple franchise owners confirmed to Cricbuzz.

IPL 2022 mega auction dates finalised, to take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13: Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest T20 cricket competition in the world and has players from across the globe ply their trade for the franchises in the competition. Besides being one of the most successful franchise cricket leagues in the world, it is also one of the richest tournaments in the sport.

The IPL has over the years witnessed tremendous growth in terms of quality and viewership as it remains a dream for cricketers around the globe to take part in the cash-rich league. Since its inception in 2008, IPL has played a massive role in the rise of several young cricketers who have gone on to become world-beaters for their respective countries and have become superstars in world cricket.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) - the domestic T20 competition of Pakistan has often been compared with the IPL despite there being a vast difference in the quality of the two leagues. Over the years, several former Pakistan cricketers have tried to draw comparisons between the IPL and PSL and the latest to join the bandwagon is former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed.

Javed believes PSL is a better league compared to the IPL and is the most interesting league in the world due to the nature of pitches in Pakistan. Compared to PSL, Javed said IPL has only flat pitches and the quality of bowling is low.

"This [PSL] is the most interesting league in the world, if there are no interruptions due to Covid-19 or anything else, because of the nature of the pitches. For instance, Lahore's pitch has some support for the bowlers, whereas you see higher scores in Karachi," Javed was quoted as saying by samaa.tv by PTV Sports.

"On the other hand if you look at IPL, there is only one type of cricket being played there due to extremely flat surfaces and low-quality bowling," added the former Pakistan pacer.

The comments didn't go down well with cricket fans on Twitter, who lashed out at Javed for his 'low-quality bowling' remark on the IPL and schooled him. Check out some of the tweets -

Former Pakistan pacer rates IPL below PSL over 'low quality bowling', gets trolled brutally on Twitter

The Lucknow Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise is making all the right moves ahead of the mega auction, feels former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra. Lucknow franchise has managed to catch the attention of fans and experts alike with some major appointments ahead of the mega auction.

The franchise has roped in former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower as their head coach and former India opener Gautam Gambhir as the mentor ahead of their debut season in the league next year. While Flower has worked as a coach with several T20 franchises across the globe, Gambhir is a two-time IPL-winning captain with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Chopra has been left impressed by the Lucknow franchise's moves ahead of the IPL mega auction and took to Twitter to name three players they should target in the players' draft ahead of the auction. Both new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad can pick a maximum of three players each ahead of the mega auction.

Chopra believes Lucknow franchise should pick former Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya or wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan ahead of the mega auction. All these players have been released by their respective franchises and are available in the draft.

KL Rahul next? Andy Flower leaves Punjab Kings to become head coach of Lucknow IPL franchise

The IPL 2021 edition was a hit. It became the first-ever season to be held in two halves after the first leg got interrupted due to the second wave of the Covid-19 virus in India. UAE came forward to host the second and final leg, which saw the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the finale, by 27 runs, to clinch their fourth title.

The Dhoni-led Yellow Army had a tough time in IPL 2020. Being without some of their key players, CSK lost the plot in the initial stages to be reeling behind and didn't qualify for the playoffs for the first-time in the tournament-history. However, Dhoni & Co. recovered in style and played some attractive cricket to lift their fourth IPL championship this year.

CSK have now also gone onto break more records and achieve a new feat as they toppled Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to become the most tweeted about IPL team on Twitter in the calendar year (as per Twitter India).
