A lot of changes have happened in Indian cricket post the Men's T20 World Cup, held last year in the UAE. Virat Kohli had already announced that the World Cup will be his last assignment as the captain in the shortest format. He stepped down post the showpiece event, being succeeded by Rohit Sharma, whereas the BCCI national selectors sacked him as the ODI captain, making Rohit the white-ball skipper altogether.

After the end of the three-match Test series between India and South Africa, in the rainbow nation, Kohli also stepped down as the red-ball captain. While many believe things aren't at its best between Kohli and the BCCI -- post the former's explosive presser prior to the SA tour -- former chief selector Kiron More opened up on how things have shaped up in recent times and sympathised with Kohli.

"The way he has left is a bit sad. The way people have treated him, and I am not talking of the BCCI, and criticised him was not fair. He has played a lot of cricket, he has done well for India. The way he played any form of cricket, he had that quality. He always showed the character that he wanted to win," More told News18.

He further asserted, "Let's not forget he is a World Cup winner (2011). He has got 70 international hundreds and is a special player. I am disappointed with the way people were talking about him and the way his captaincy was criticised. For me, he is a legend. Performance-wise, we cannot touch him. I am not worried about him stepping down from T20 or ODI captaincy. That is part of life. The way people were criticising him was not good."

With Kohli stepping down as the Test captain, Rohit is touted to be the frontrunner to take over as the all-format captain. More reflected on Rohit-Rahul Dravid partnership and opined on Kohli the batter going forward. He feels the transition will take time and has backed Kohli to dominate with the bat. "This always happens. People have to come together and regroup. That's the job of Rahul Dravid and the selectors. They are matured cricketers. It is not going to be easy and will take time for the Indian team to settle down. Test cricket is not easy, no matter what. You play Test cricket with your heart. He’s got to perform. Kohli’s 79 and 29 in Cape Town were like 150 on difficult pitch," the former keeper-batter said.

"It is not easy to leave captaincy. He was the captain in all three formats. He must have decided to focus on his batting and win matches for the country. He has always played freely to score 70 international hundreds. Time comes in every captain’s life to move on. Every captain feels it and perhaps he has felt it now," More concluded.

'Way people treated him...': Ex-BCCI selector opines on Virat Kohli post his Test captaincy resignation

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has named India's next Test captain after Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the red-ball format on January 15. The 33-year-old Kohli surprised one and all with his decision, only a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the rainbow nation.

Kohli shared the news with one and all and tweeted saying, "Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now."

Virat Kohli's glorious Test captaincy tenure: Reliving former skipper's inspiring run as leader in whites

South Africa beat India by 31 runs in the first ODI, of the three-match series, on Wednesday (January 19). After the riveting Test series played in the African nation between both sides, the two heavyweights locked horns with each other in the ODI leg as Temba Bavuma-led Proteas took a 1-0 lead in the series opener.

Opting to bat first, Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen's respective tons propelled SA to 296-4. In reply, India rode on fifties from Shikhar Dhawan (79), Virat Kohli (51) and Shardul Thakur (50 not out) to manage 265-8 and lost the clash in a convincing manner.

During India's run-chase, Rahul & Co. were oncourse for a win courtesy an impressive 98-run second-wicket stand between veterans Dhawan and Kohli. However, the duo's wickets turned the match around as India's middle-order was once again under test. From 138-1, India were quickly reduced to 181-4 when the onus fell on Rishabh Pant; as was the case exactly a year ago during India's famous Gabba Test win over Australia.

Nonetheless, Pant couldn't do anything significant as he was brilliantly stumped by his counterpart Quinton de Kock. Pant tried to flick the ball, pitched on the leg-side, but it was away from his body. As a result, he lost his balance and moved out of the crease when De Kock stumped him in a flash. The South African's stumping reminded many of former Indian captain MS Dhoni. In his illustrious career, Dhoni was known for his unorthodox yet handy keeping skills along with his tactical acumen, finishing prowess, etc. He ended his international career with 829 dismissals (third-most overall).

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Proteas captain Bavuma labelled his side's performance as a 'perfect game'.

KL Rahul-led India lost the three-match ODI series opener versus Temba Bavuma's South Africa on Wednesday (January 19). Being asked to bowl first, India had reduced SA to 68-3 before a match-winning 204-run fourth-wicket stand between centurions Bavuma (110) and Rassie van der Dussen (129 not out) propelled the hosts to 296-4 in 50 overs at Boland Park, Paarl.

In reply, India managed only 265-8 in their full quota of overs to go 1-0 down in the series. There were half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (79), former captain Kohli (51) and all-rounder Shardul Thakur (50 not out) but no daddy hundred from the top order and unimpressive returns from the middle and lower order resulted in India's convincing loss.

Reviewing India's performance in the ODI series opener, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt feels the energy that Kohli brought on the field as captain was entirely missing under KL Rahul. For the unversed, Rahul is captaining the side in the absence of limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma (out due to hamstring injury).

"The energy that Virat brought to the ground as captain was missing. Maybe the team doesn’t have that vibe with KL. The grip and energy of a team that is attached with its captain as well as that unity was missing. KL didn’t have energy,” Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“It happens with some people. They have a different vibe when given responsibility and another when they do not have it. He didn’t seem like an out-of-the-box thinker. As a captain, you keep on trying and keep the opposition guessing. These things were not evident in his leadership,” the tainted batter explained.

Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, on Friday (January 21) at the same venue, Butt suggested how India can tweak their team combination a bit. "KL Rahul can keep wickets and India can bring in an extra batter in Gaikwad or Ishan. This will improve the middle order. India should also bring in a genuine pacer in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Rishabh Pant is the fifth batter. He is very expressive and talented but you cannot consistently rely on him. He needs to get fit. Lost his balance today. He needs to bring himself back in shape physically. He needs to make some sacrifices in this diet for the team,” Butt added.

'Energy that Kohli brought as captain was missing, team doesn't....' - Salman Butt on India's 1st ODI loss

With Rohit Sharma being ruled out of the ongoing three ODIs between India and South Africa, KL Rahul is leading the Men in Blue in the African nation. On Wednesday (January 19), Rahul walked out for the coin toss for the first time ever as India's captain in the 50-over format.

For the unversed, Rahul has already captained India once. During the ongoing SA tour, Rahul had led the Indian team in the second and penultimate Test -- captaining India for the first time in a full match -- which the visitors lost by 7 wickets. On his ODI captaincy debut, the 29-year-old achieved a unique record. Rahul became only the second Indian to captain the side before making 50 appearances in the ODI format.

IndvSA: KL Rahul becomes second Indian to achieve unique captaincy feat during ODI series opener

Virat Kohli shocked the entire cricketing fraternity when he announced his decision to step down as India's Test captain. The decision came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the rainbow nation, despite having a 1-0 lead.

By quitting as the Test captain, the 33-year-old Kohli's overall captaincy tenure also came to an end. For the unversed, Kohli had already stepped down as the T20I captain, a decision which he revealed prior to the World Cup in the UAE last year, and was sacked as the ODI skipper as the national selectors wanted only one captain for the white-ball formats. There was always pressure: Former India pacer shares his take on Virat Kohli's captaincy resignation

Virat Kohli stunned the cricketing fraternity by resigning as the Test captain on Saturday (January 15). The 33-year-old Kohli's decision came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus Dean Elgar's South Africa, in the rainbow nation.

Under Kohli, India achieved sizeable success in the red-ball format. India dominated at home, won a Test series in Australia, have an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom (held mid-2021), won two games in South Africa and played the inaugural WTC final. Kohli-led India ended as the No. 1 ranked side on five consecutive years in ICC rankings after annual updates.

Thus, with Kohli stepping aside as the Test captain, his overall captaincy tenure as also ended. The national selectors have an important decision to make, with regard to choosing Kohli's successor in whites. Limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is leading the race whereas some have suggested youngsters such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to take over.

Former Indian cricketer and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar opened up in this regard and told Gulf News, "If you ask me, it may be a practical idea to have a stop-gap arrangement with Rohit Sharma or even Ravi Ashwin for a year or so and groom someone in the meanwhile."

From his own experience, Vengsarkar revealed how the selection committee had backed Anil Kumble to succeed Rahul Dravid as Test captain, despite many suggesting the then limited-overs captain MS Dhoni's name.

“Interestingly, my committee was faced with a similar situation when Rahul Dravid stepped down from captaincy and we had a demanding Australia tour round the corner. Some felt that MS Dhoni, who was leading in the shorter format, be promoted but we went ahead with Anil Kumble who did a fantastic job,” he recalled.

Vengsarkar also opined on the reason behind Kohli's sudden resignation as Test captain. Many feel his own form -- having not scored an international ton since late 2019 -- was one of the main reasons for the right-hander's decision. “I don’t agree with this for I feel that Kohli has had a dream run for nearly five years as a batsman and captain. For all the talk about his current lean phase, I feel that Indians are often obsessed with statistics and that’s something that I don’t believe in”, concluded Vengsarkar.

Not Rahul or Pant! Vengsarkar names two senior players who can replace Virat Kohli as Test captain

Virat Kohli, on January 15, announced that he is stepping down as the Test captain. The decision came as a huge shock for the entire cricketing fraternity, given his impressive record as the skipper in the red-ball format. With him quitting as the Test captain, Kohli's overall captaincy tenure for the national side also came to an end.

In mid-September 2021, Kohli had announced that he would be stepping down as the T20I captain following the World Cup, in the UAE. Post the mega event, he was sacked as the ODI captain before quitting the top post in Test. As the 33-year-old Kohli will now look to play freely -- without additional responsibilities -- in India's upcoming assignments, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir opined on Kohli's captaincy tenure. He feels that while the red-ball team is in good health at the time of Kohli's captaincy resignation, he cannot say the same about the white-ball sides.

In limited-overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order which Virat couldn’t create,” Gambhir wrote in his column for Times of India.

He has already set a standard for India: Rahul speaks highly of former captain Kohli ahead of SA ODIs

Virat Kohli, on January 15, announced his decision to step aside as the Indian Test captain. The 33-year-old stunned one and all with his sudden decision, which came only a day after India's three-match Test series loss to hosts Dean Elgar-led South Africa.

Kohli tweeted saying, "Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now."

Kohli's decision shocked the entire cricketing fraternity. Under him, India rose to the No. 1 rankings and ended at the top spot for five consecutive years in ICC's rankings after annual updates. Kohli led India to their maiden Test series win on Australian soil, an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom, plenty of wins at home and the final of the inaugural ICC WTC cycle.

As many former cricketers and experts of the game have reacted to Kohli's latest revelation, former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi also joined the bandwagon.

Kohli had already stepped aside as the T20I captain, post the World Cup in the UAE last year, and was removed as the ODI captain in late 2021. Virat Kohli, on January 15, announced his decision to step aside as the Indian Test captain. The 33-year-old stunned one and all with his sudden decision, which came only a day after India's three-match Test series loss to hosts Dean Elgar-led South Africa.

'There comes a stage where you can't...': Afridi opines on Virat Kohli's decision to quit Test captaincy

In the past few months, a lot has changed in Indian cricket -- especially in the senior men's team. Virat Kohli announced, in mid-September 2021, that the T20 World Cup will be his last assignment as skipper in the shortest format. In early December, he was sacked as the ODI captain as the national selectors wanted a single captain for the white-ball formats.

You will always be my captain, King: Siraj gets emotional, shares heartfelt post for 'superhero' Virat Kohli

A lot has changed in Indian cricket in the past few months. Virat Kohli stepped down as the Test captain on Saturday (January 15), after resigning from the post in T20Is -- announcing his decision prior to the World Cup -- and being sacked as the ODI skipper.

In the forthcoming India-South Africa ODIs, in the African nation, KL Rahul will lead the Men in Blue with Kohli in the line-up, sans limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma (out due to hamstring injury). On the other hand, the series will also see Jasprit Bumrah don the vice-captain's hat. Earlier in the SA tour, Bumrah had filled in as vice-captain for the second and penultimate Test, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, with regular captain Kohli being injured.

Ahead of the three ODIs, Bumrah opened up on the prospect of leading Team India in the future, given the Test captaincy spot is now vacant following Kohli's resignation.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of the the three-match ODI series opener, at Paarl, the 28-year-old Bumrah opined that he can captain the side if given an opportunity. However, the speedster's focus is always to look for ways where he can contribute and do his work as a bowler.

"For me, I am ready to contribute in whatever position and way I can. If given an opportunity to lead India, you will think about it. It is not something that I like to chase, I like to do my work, however, I can do the job. Me having a post or not does not really matter. That has always been my process and what I look to do. If given an opportunity, there is a no bigger honour than this but yeah, I try to focus on how I can contribute," the pacer said.

He further stressed, "For me, the role does not change at all. I have to do my job and I will be helping KL Rahul as much as I can whenever he needs assistance. Even when I am not the vice-captain, I try to help the younger guys and I have a lot of discussions with them regarding having a particular field."

Bumrah concluded by saying, "You always want the responsibility. If there is no responsibility or pressure, you would not enjoy the game. I try to manage the responsibility and contribute to the side's cause. I am a keen learner, when I came into the team, I always asked questions. I try to help out the youngsters and eradicate their doubts. Sometimes I also end up learning from them."

The national selectors will have a tough task to name the next Test captain in the coming few weeks. India's next Test series is at home, versus Sri Lanka. For now, they are gearing up for the three ODIs versus Temba Bavuma & Co. after losing the Tests 2-1.

ALSO READ | Ahead of the three ODIs, Bumrah opened up on the prospect of leading Team India in the future, given the Test captaincy spot is now vacant following Kohli's resignation. Even when I am not the vice-captain, I try to help the younger guys and I have a lot of discussions with them regarding having a particular field." ALSO READ | Bumrah concluded by saying, "You always want the responsibility. If there is no responsibility or pressure, you would not enjoy the game. I try to manage the responsibility and contribute to the side's cause. I am a keen learner, when I came into the team, I always asked questions. I try to help out the youngsters and eradicate their doubts. Sometimes I also end up learning from them." The national selectors will have a tough task to name the next Test captain in the coming few weeks. India's next Test series is at home, versus Sri Lanka. For now, they are gearing up for the three ODIs versus Temba Bavuma & Co. after losing the Tests 2-1.

'If given an opportunity to lead India.....' - Jasprit Bumrah opines on prospect of leading Team India

Former Indian opener-turned-social media sensation Wasim Jaffer has lauded Virat Kohli after the latter dropped a bomb recently by stepping down as the Test captain. Kohli took to his official Twitter handle to share the news with one and all, a day after India's 2-1 series loss to Dean Elgar-led South Africa.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer opened up on Kohli's decision, hailed him for being an exceptional leader in whites and said, "The way he has led India in all three formats has been commendable. Even though we keep saying that he hasn't won a ICC trophy, other than that he has a great record as a leader, whether it's at home where he hasn't lost any series as a captain, he lost only two Test matches. Away from home he has got tremendous success.

“As a white-ball captain, he won T20 trophies in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Beating Australia in Australia was the icing on the cake for him as a leader. I think no sub-continent team has gone to Australia and beaten Australia. It was probably the highest point as a captain,” Jaffer added.

Jaffer further went onto mention the one quality brought forward by Kohli during his tenure as the Test captain, from 2014-2021. "The kind of culture he has brought to the Indian team and the fast-bowling firepower that India has become under him is tremendous, something which India never had.

"Now we've got such a high quality bowling attack and I think India has definitely got one of the best bowling attacks going around whether it's seaming conditions or spinning conditions," the 43-year old further said.

Kohli took over from MS Dhoni as the Test captain when the national side occupied the seventh position in ICC Test Rankings. At the time of his resignation, India are the No. 1 side and ended at the top spot for five consecutive years during annual updates of ICC rankings. Under Kohli, India won 40 Tests in 68 matches, winning three games in England, two series on the trot in Australia (one under Ajinkya Rahane), two Tests in South Africa.

Jaffer also suggested that Hitman Rohit should now take over from Kohli whereas named three candidates who can be groomed under him. "Rohit Sharma I feel will be the obvious choice right now for him to lead in all three formats but selectors in a year or two years time look for replacement. Or look for somebody to groom and the obvious name that comes to mind is Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul. And I would also take the name of Shreyas Iyer because I think these three guys have the potential to be Indian captain for the future,” he said.

Jaffer mentions quality Kohli developed 'which India never had', suggests ideal candidates as his successor

On Saturday (January 15), Virat Kohli dropped a bomb by announcing his decision to step aside as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Kohli's decision came following the three-match Test series loss to South Africa, in the rainbow nation, on Friday (January 14).

Kohli, thus, signed off as India's most successful Test captain -- leading the national side in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them. In mid-September 2021, the 33-year-old had announced that the T20 World Cup will be his last assignment as captain of the shortest format. In December, BCCI sacked him as the ODI captain before giving up the Test captaincy as well.

Talking on India News, former Indian wicketkeeper and national selector Saba Karim opined on Kohli's Test captaincy resignation and said, "It is very difficult to say what is the reason behind this. The picture we are getting to see in the last four-five months, it means the pressure was building on him. He might have been feeling suffocated because of which he might have ended his relationship with captaincy."

"Virat Kohli is a person who doesn't take a step back from fighting. I agree India lost the Test series in South Africa, where they were expected to win, but he is always ready for such challenges. It is the first time he has taken such a decision on his own," he added.

Karim further expressed his concern with so many changes happening rapidly in Indian cricket. In this regard, he stated, "I didn't think so many changes will happen so soon. The first setback was when Kohli himself decided that he will not do the T20 captaincy. We had spoken about the timing that time as well that the World Cup was about to happen and the team had been selected, for Kohli to take such a decision was extremely astonishing."

"The selectors then decided that Kohli will not remain the captain in ODI cricket as well. So too many changes have happened too quickly. The first change was initiated by Kohli himself but after that, the selectors have had a role in the change and in the end, again this personal decision from Kohli."

The Indian cricket loyalists would be hoping for King Kohli to break his international century-drought at his earliest given he is now free from captaincy duties and can play freely. He will be seen in action in the forthcoming three ODIs versus Temba Bavuma-led Proteas, where the Men in Blue will be led by KL Rahul amid limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence (due to hamstring injury).

SIMPLY MINDBOGGLING! From Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni to AB de Villiers: Top 5 earners in IPL history

Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa, at Newlands, Cape Town, was another topsy-turvy battle between both sides in the series finale. As India started the day at 57-2, with an overall lead of 70 runs, Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 100 enabled India to setup a tricky 212-run target for the Dean Elgar-led Proteas.

While SA ended the day's play at 101 for 2, with both the openers Aiden Markram and Captain Elgar back in the pavillion, there was a huge controversy which erupted when Elgar survived a very close LBW call. The Proteas captain was given out by the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, after being trapped plumb in front by R Ashwin. However, Elgar took the decision upstairs where replays showed that the ball had hit the left-hander below the knee, however, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Thus, Elgar breathed a sigh of relief by getting a reprieve at that time (he eventually fell for 30 before close of play).

I hate to say this but it’s been going on for years. It’s just the big suck up towards India and anybody who plays for India. They are untouchable, so everyone will laugh it off,” the former South African told ESPNCricinfo.

“I love Virat Kohli, I love his cricket, I love the way he plays. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere to say ‘hang on, you must be severely punished’. If anything, it was a mistake. I just cannot believe that they could think along those sort of lines. For too long Virat has got away with behavior which is unacceptable on a cricket field. Following the whole DRS controversy, many former cricketers and experts of the game have slammed Kohli & Co. for their approach and comments following Dean Elgar lbw decision being overturned. Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal also joined the bandwagon and lashed out at Team India.

“I have seen Dean Elgar’s review many times. Seeing him, no one can say that the ball is going over the stump. It is clear that the ball is hitting his knees and he is out. But why is Team India raising questions? In the 2011 World Cup, when Sachin Tendulkar’s decision on my ball was reversed, then India had said that DRS is a reliable and accurate technique. Then why are they now saying that DRS technology is not reliable and correct. Simply because the verdict went against you,” Ajmal said. He, thus, recalled the controversial DRS decision which led to Tendulkar surviving a close lbw call off his bowling during the marquee 2011 ODI WC semi-final between India and Pakistan in Mohali.

“There was no point in not giving Sachin Tendulkar out even on my ball in the 2011 World Cup. In 2011, my ball was not missing the stump in the same way as Ashwin was not doing against Elgar in Cape Town,” he added.

Day 3 of the Cape Town Test between India and South Africa saw Proteas skipper Dean Elgar survive a close DRS call during his side's 212-run chase towards the end of day's proceedings, on Thursday (January 13).

Day 3 of the Cape Town Test between India and South Africa saw Proteas skipper Dean Elgar survive a close DRS call during his side's 212-run chase towards the end of day's proceedings, on Thursday (January 13). For the unversed, the Proteas captain was given out by the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, after being trapped plumb in front off R Ashwin's bowling. However, the left-hander took the decision upstairs. While the replays showed that the ball had hit the left-hander below the knee, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going over the stumps. Thus, it led to Elgar getting a reprieve as Virat Kohli-led Indian team showed their frustration and even blamed the host broadcaster, SuperSport, for doing things favouring the home side in the riveting series. "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition,” said Kohli as the 33-year-old walked up to the stump mic whereas the likes of Ashwin and Rahul expressed their displeasure over the ball-tracking system as well by not mincing their words. Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa commenced with the Virat Kohli-led Indian team 57-2, with an overall lead of 70 runs. Kohli & Co. needed few good partnerships to take the lead beyond the 200-run mark as the visitors aimed to setup anything over 250 as target for the Proteas.

However, India's day started on a forgettable note, on Thursday (January 13), with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane falling soon. Nonetheless, Captain Kohli was joined by keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the middle as the duo stitched a vital 94-run stand for the fifth-wicket to take India's score forward. While Kohli was watchful and kept on guiding the youngster at the other end, the 24-year-old Pant continued to add runs after his skipper's departure and went onto slam his fourth ton in the purest format of the game.

The former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is the BCCI President, since late 2019, whereas Rahul Dravid is serving as the head coach of the senior men's cricket team. On the other hand, VVS Laxman has taken up as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), as Dravid's successor.

Among the players from the golden era, only Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is missing from the setup. Ahead of the commencement of the third and final Test, Dravid had a brief conversation with commentator Pommie Mbangwa on-air, where the former thanked one and all for the birthday wishes. However, he made an honest confession when it comes to the wishes on his special day.

Dravid said, "As you get older you don’t know what to feel when it’s your birthday. You are a year older. But it’s nice, some nice wishes from friends, family, and fans. So very grateful for all of that."

Ahead of the all-important Test series finale, coach Dravid also revealed that the Virat Kohli-led Indian side doesn't need to be motivated as they are eager to go for the kill and achieve their maiden Test series win in SA. "At this level, you don’t motivate people to play the game. If I am having to do that before a big Test match with the opportunity to create history, then we have got the wrong people,” Dravid added.

For the unversed, India won the three-match Test series opener, in Centurion, before losing the second and penultimate Test at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. They need to win their first Test in Cape Town to make history and return with their maiden Test series triumph in the rainbow nation.

Virat Kohli-led India have locked horns with South Africa in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). With the series interestingly poised at 1-1, there's all to play for both sides in the deciding encounter. For the unversed, Kohli & Co. are on the cusp of winning their maiden Test series on South African soil if they end with a scoreline of 2-1.

While India won the toss and opted to bat first, the onus fell on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The two openers have been in form and were involved in a century-stand on Day 1 of the series opener, in Centurion, but failed to score big in the first innings.

Rahul (12) and Mayank (15) made their way back with lowly returns. However, the two became the first Indian opening duo to register 200+ runs in Tests in South Africa.

Rahul and Mayank surpassed Virender Sehwag-Gautam Gambhir to top the list of Indian opening pairs who have got the most runs in the rainbow nation. Sehwag and Gambhir previously held the numero uno position, having accumulated 184 runs to their name. Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik are placed on the third spot (153 runs).

Both Rahul and Mayank would have been gutted to miss out on scoring big after getting a start. The duo were involved in a 31-run opening stand before Duanne Olivier removed Rahul whereas Kagiso Rabada accounted for Mayank's scalp.

At the coin toss, Kohli told the broadcasters, "Runs on this venue have always worked out well. I am fit and fine. I come in for Vihari. Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. It was a tough decision to choose between the two (Ishant and Umesh). We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited."

At lunch on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test, India are 75-2 in 28 overs.

India vs SA, 3rd Test: Rahul, Mayank move past Sehwag-Gambhir to attain unique feat among Indian openers

Brilliant captain to excellent mentor: Happy Birthday, Indian cricket's selfless servant Rahul Dravid

KL Rahul-led India fought hard but lost the second and penultimate Test versus South Africa at The Wanderers, Johannesburg on Thursday (January 06). As Day 4 resumed with India needing 8 more wickets whereas Dean Elgar-led Proteas were 122 runs away from their 240-run target, Rahul & Co. managed to take only one more wicket as Elgar's 96 not out propelled the home side to a seven-wicket win.

With this, the series is now levelled at 1-1 with one more Test to go. While India returned with a lot of positives, such as competing hard sans regular captain Virat Kohli, the all-round performance of Shardul Thakur and middle-order getting some runs courtesy Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari and Ajinkya Rahane, the former Indian keeper-batsman and ex-selector Saba Karim feels head coach Rahul Dravid has lots to do to inspire the national team to their maiden Test series win on African soil.

Talking on Youtube channel Khelneeti, Karim said, "The biggest challenge for Rahul Dravid will be to eradicate this graph of ups and downs. The main reason for this inconsistency is that, the one Test match that we play, we play with all our energy and intensity but for the next match we lack that very energy and unity."

He added, "If we analyze carefully, we can see that all our players together are a superpower for a particular Test match. But to win a series you much show the same intensity and Test match throughout. We show the intentisy for the entire 15 sessions but the force and preparation we need across the 15 sessions of the next match goes missing and that's the reason behind this graph."
