India have been on a rampage versus Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23. Rohit Sharma & Co. won the series opener, in Nagpur, convincingly and also emerged on top in the second Test, in New Delhi, and will now aim for a 4-0 whitewash versus the Aussies at home. While the likes of Rohit, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Md Shami, Axar Patel have been on a roll, KL Rahul has struggled in particular in the two Tests.

Rahul, who has only 198 runs in the last 12 innings, has managed only 38 runs in 3 outings in the Australia Tests. Thus, he had drawn a lot of criticism and is place is on the line. Recently, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik opined on Rahul's form and symphathised with him. He feels Rahul might lose his place soon not for his unlucky dismissal in the second innings of the Delhi Test but for his below-par returns since the South Africa series last year.

Karthik said on Cricbuzz, "He also knows for a fact that if he's going to be dropped for the next match, which is pretty much an eventuality, it is not because of the one innings, it is because of what has transpired in the last five-six Test matches. He is a class player. He is very good in all formats. At this point, I don't think it's the technique, it's what is happening between the ears. He might need some time away from the game. Come back fresh for the ODIs."

It's not a nice feeling because there's not much you can do."

DK went on to pick Shubman Gill over Rahul for the third Test at Holkar Stadium, Indore. "Temporarily for the moment, I will have to go with Shubman Gill. He batted beautifully. There will be just one change in the India XI (for the third Test). I felt bad for KL Rahul. He has been under the scanner. But One thing is for sure, KL will come back strongly and when he does, there are not too many right-handed batters who can match him with the quality and range of shots," DK stated.

India will lock horns with Australia in the third and penultimate Test at Indore which kicks off on March 01. While Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid have backed Rahul, he might still be out of the playing XI given he has looked completely out of sorts -- especially mentally -- in the series.

BCCI likely to ink a deal with Adidas as Team India's official apparel sponsor: Report

India and Pakistan have one of the most fierce rivalries in cricketing fraternity. Over the years, the two teams meet only in multi-nation or ICC events due to strained political relations between both nations. While the current crop of players from both sides remain co-ordial with each other on and off the field, there has been a constant flurry of former Pakistan cricketers taking a dig at Indian players for their performances.

Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now opened up on the entire matter and has lashed out at this habit of ex-Pakistan players for their constant criticism of Indian cricketers.

'What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response...'

Gavaskar wrote in his coloum for Mid-Day, "What the following for the game also does is to make the media, especially the online media, look to get more eyeballs or followers and so anything to do with cricket and especially about Indian players gets into the public domain even if it actually belittles them. That's the sad part especially when the views of those across the border get online in the Indian media. It's almost a daily thing to hear some former player from across the border pulling down an Indian player and saying the Pakistani player is better. What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response from the Indian fans who will defend their favourite player and in doing so, increasing the followers of the former player from across the border."

Have you ever heard or read any Indian player past or present saying anything about the players from across the border? Frankly, nobody cares, so no Indian that I know has said anything about the players from across the border. It's simply not our style. If our online media ignores what is said across the border then it will automatically stop, but our media will publish it even if it is pulling a fellow Indian down."

However, he didn't feature in the playing XI. He will next be seen in IPL 2023 for the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Prithvi Shaw attack: Accused woman and 3 others sent to 14-day judicial custody

England is currently going around as one of the best Test teams in the world; thanks to their new approach, called ‘Bazball’ – they have made headlines for all the right reasons so far. Be it for their Test wins at home last year or even outside of it including the famous clean-sweep victory over Pakistan in Pakistan, England is the side almost every country fears to face. Having enjoyed their recent 267-run win over New Zealand in the first Test of the ongoing series, Ben Stokes’ England is high on confidence. Meanwhile, former English captain Nasser Hussain feels this side’s toughest challenge is about to come and it’s not the Ashes.

In 2023, Australia will be travelling to England for the away Ashes, and given how they have fared so far in their ongoing series against India, Hussain feels Oz won’t be as big a threat as they were back in the day.

Having come to India on the back of two home series win over Windies and South Africa, Australia was confident of beating India in India for the first time since 2004. The opposite happened as India had Aussies on the mat in both Tests and that too inside three days each.

Considering Australia’s poor away run in Tests and knowing that they haven’t won an Ashes in England since 2001, the hosts would fancy their chances this time. Hussain, however, feels it’s not the Ashes that would be England’s toughest challenge this year but the away India tour in 2024.

Speaking after England’s first Test, Hussain said, “Given Australia have not won here since 2001, England’s greatest challenge will be away in India. The Ashes is going to be mouth-watering, and I think it will be close.”

Sharing his opinion on how Bazball could come up against the mighty Aussies, Hussain feels it’s the Australian batting that would determine the result of the Ashes.

“People are talking about whether Bazball will work against their high-quality bowling attack. I think the Ashes will be won and lost on Australia’s batting line-up. They have been below par away from home, but if they can score runs in England, it will be pretty tight,” Hussain added.

Meanwhile, before this star-studded pair of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took over the reins, England struggled big time to find the right results under Joe Root, under whom they won just one Test in his last 17 matches as the captain. Hailing this duo that clearly changed the dynamics of English Test cricket, Hussain said,

"McCullum was the right fit at the right time. Before he came in, England were being micromanaged to the Nth degree, whether it be because of the Covid bubbles or their rotation policy. They needed someone like McCullum to set them free. With Stokes as his captain, they have two people who are completely aligned.”

Nasser Hussain lays down toughest challenge for high-flying England Test team, and it's not the Ashes

India thrashed Australia by six wickets on Day 3 of the second Test, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, to go 2-0 up in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Australia did put up a better show in the Test match, till the first innings, they fell flat in their second essay and gave a paltry 114-run target to Team India. In reply, Rohit Sharma & Co. chased down the score with six wickets to spare and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the process.

The likes of Rohit, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Md Shami have been India's top-performers so far but opener KL Rahul has been struggling for runs. The 30-year-old has only managed 198 runs in the last 12 innings. In the ongoing Test series, Rahul has a total of 38 runs in three innings and has looked completely out of form. Thus, many have slammed the Indian batter and former pacer Venkatesh Prasad has been quite vocal in his criticism of Rahul. He has time and again vented out his frustration with Rahul struggling for runs. Amid severe criticism, both captain Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have backed the underfire opener.

After the Delhi Test win, Dravid told Star Sports, "I think he (Rahul) needs to trust his processes. This is just a phase, he has been one of our most successful overseas openers. He’s got centuries in South Africa and England, we’ll continue to back him. I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this."

Now, Prasad broke the notion of Rahul having a good overseas record and shared a series of tweets -- also comprising the opener's ordinary away numbers. He wrote, "There is a view that KL Rahul has an outstanding overseas Test record. But stats speak otherwise. He has a test avg of 30 overseas in 56 innings. He has scored 6 overseas centuries but followed it up with a string of low scores that’s why averaging 30. Let’s look at a few others. Shikhar Dhawan has the best overseas average amongst recent openers. Avg of nearly 40 with 5 100’s. Though he too hasn’t been consistent in Test but had Outstanding centuries in SL and NZ, plus a much better home record."

Further, Prasad added, "Mayank Agarwal after the brilliant start in Aust did struggle in away test matches. But he has by far the best home record. Avg of nearly 70 in 13 innings,2 double 100’s & a 150 on a Wankhede pitch where everyone else struggled. Great against spin & had a prolific domestic season. Shubhman Gill has had a brief international career and in 14 overseas innings averages 37, with his 91 at Gabba amongst the best overseas 4th innings and has been in outstanding form," he added in a long thread on Monday, February 20.

Venkatesh Prasad once again slams KL Rahul, hits back at 'he has great overseas Test record' claims

India defeated Australia on Day 3 of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Sunday (February 19). The day kicked off with Australia being well-placed at 61 for 1, with an overall lead of 62 runs, but fell flat on the third day after being dismissed for a paltry 113. Ravindra Jadeja (7 for 42) wreaked havoc with the red cherry before Rohit Sharma & Co. chased down a target of 114 with six wickets in hand. With the win, India have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and BCCI later named an unchanged squad for the last two Tests.

However, there was one big update. Indian opener KL Rahul was axed as the vice-captain amid his form concerns. Thus, it is believed that he paid a price for his poor run of form and has been sacked as Rohit's deputy. As per a report by The Indian Express, the management has sought to unburden Rahul from the leadership role.

IND vs AUS: Revealed! Why KL Rahul has been axed as India's vice-captain for remaining Tests

Rohit Sharma-led India gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, on Sunday (February 19), with a six-wicket win on Day 3 of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. With this win, India have strengthened their chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship final and look set to whitewash the Aussies in the four-match series with Pat Cummins & Co. being clueless in front of the Indian spin trio.

After losing the Nagpur Test by an innings and 132 runs, Australia did put up a better show in the first innings of the Delhi Test. They managed 263 in their first essay and dismissed India for 262, gaining one-run lead, but fell flat in their second innings with their batters playing the sweep shots on a track which kept low, with Jadeja-Ashwin troubling them with spin. After the game, former Pakistan captain and PCB chairman Ramiz Raja feels 'Australia are not prepared' and went on to add that 'it is nearly impossible to beat Team India in India.'

"The Australians used to finish games against sub-continent teams in Perth or Brisbane. The tables have turned," Ramiz Raja said in his YouTube show. "It shows that Australia are not prepared, especially when it comes to playing good Test cricket in India. It's nearly impossible to beat Team India in India. An ordinary performance against spin. Nine wickets were dismissed in one session. Jadeja produced an excellent bowling performance," Raja added.

They managed 263 in their first essay and dismissed India for 262, gaining one-run lead, but fell flat in their second innings with their batters playing the sweep shots on a track which kept low, with Jadeja-Ashwin troubling them with spin. After the game, former Pakistan captain and PCB chairman Ramiz Raja feels 'Australia are not prepared' and went on to add that 'it is nearly impossible to beat Team India in India.' "The Australians used to finish games against sub-continent teams in Perth or Brisbane. Also Read: IND vs AUS: Revealed!
Following India’s yet another statement-making win over Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, they have inched closer to sealing the direct qualification for the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC). As announced by the ICC earlier, the finals of the second edition of WTC will be played on a neutral venue - at the Oval in London this time from June 7th to 11th with 12th been kept as a reserve day. While both Australia and India were already among the favourites to play the summit clash, the result of this series, and the ones that are scheduled to happen elsewhere could determine the final two.

So, after winning the first two Tests convincingly, how can India still qualify for the finals of 2023 WTC. A win in the second Test in Delhi by six wickets led to jump in India’s point percentage from 61.66 to 64.06, whereas, Australia’s lead on the latest standings suffered a dent as their PCT has now lowered down to 66.67 from 70.83.

This slip in their PCT means Australia cannot take things lightly and will have to fight out hard to avoid, a) a series whitewash against India, and b) hope for New Zealand to not lose their home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka – a combination of which could see them getting out of the top two in latest standings for the 2023 WTC.

However, for India to qualify for the finals of the World Test Championship, they just have to win one of the remaining two Tests. In one case if India wins the series 3-0 or 4-0, they will not only qualify for the finals, but will also top the standings. On the other hand, if India win the series 3-1, their PCT would be 61.92 which would be sufficient enough for them to face possibly Australia in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the worst-case scenario for the Rohit Sharma-led team, if Australia manages to win the remaining two Tests and the series is tied at 2-2, India can still qualify for the finals provided Sri Lanka drop points against New Zealand in their final Test series in this WTC cycle.

Chetan Sharma quits as BCCI chief selector: Memes galore after staggering revelations in TV sting operation

Chetan Sharma Sting Operation: The Virat Kohli vs BCCI spat was much talked about in late 2021. Ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup, Kohli announced that he will resign as the T20I captain post the showpiece event in the UAE. After the T20 WC, India was set to tour South Africa -- for three Tests and ODIs each -- when the Chetan Sharma-led BCCI selection committee sacked Kohli as the ODI captain.

This led to a huge debate, with many feeling Kohli was not treated properly. While Kohli presented his side of the story, that he was not informed well in advance about his sacking and was still eager to lead in the longer formats, his press conference with the reporters wasn't well received by the then Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI. Ganguly, the then BCCI chief, had revealed that he had insisted Kohli reconsider his decision of quitting as T20I captain; something which was denied by Kohli. Thus, this led to Kohli vs Ganguly spat.

'It became player against BCCI'

In an exclusive sting operation carried out by Zee Media, BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma has now opened up extensively on this and made a big claim. The BCCI chief selector made it clear that Ganguly had asked Kohli to not quit as T20I captain in a video conference but the latter probably didn't listen or know about it. The former Indian cricketer added that 'Kohli tried to defame Ganguly in the media' during his press conference (by deliberately speaking about the change in captaincy) ahead of the SA tour as he felt it was the former Indian skipper behind his ODI captaincy sacking.

Further, Chetan revealed that it was only a 'natural transition' and even he spoke to Kohli that the selectors wanted only one captain in white-ball formats. However, he feels the Indian star batter didn't take the change in the right way. In addition, he opined that the press conference changed the equation between Kohli and Ganguly. The former player made it clear that the former BCCI chief wasn't inclined towards Rohit Sharma as such but wasn't simply in favour of Kohli.

On Friday (February 17), Chetan Sharma resigned as the BCCI chief selector.
In the TV sting operation, Chetan opened up on Virat Kohli's ODI sacking, how his relationship declined with then BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly, Kohli-Rohit Sharma's alleged rift rumours, and made a stunning claim that Indian players take injections to play with injuries. In addition, he mentioned the likes of Hardik Pandya, Rohit and a few others are in constant touch with him and visit his house. All this wasn't well received and Chetan paid the price for it. After his resignation, a BCCI official revealed that he had lost the trust of head coach Rahul Dravid, and captains Rohit and Hardik and it wasn't possible for him to sit across them in future meetings.

He couldn't possibly have sat across the table from them for selection committee meetings as he had lost all respect.
Recently, Zee Media carried out a TV sting operation in which Chetan Sharma spoke at length about some controversial topics in Indian cricket. He mentioned Virat Kohli vs former BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly rift, rumours of the alleged Kohli-Rohit Sharma rift, and certain players taking injections in order to play despite not being fully fit, etc.

CLAIMS MADE BY CHETAN SHARMA

On Kohli vs Ganguly

When a player grows in stature, he starts thinking that he has become very big, bigger than even the board. Then he starts thinking that nobody can stand against him. He feels that without him, the game cannot continue. But has that ever happened? Many big players came and went, but cricket is still there; it remains. He wanted to confront the then-BCCI president. I was present at the selection meeting. Kohli was clearly told by the BCCI president to re-think his decision to quit the T20I captaincy. We all told him to reconsider his decision. But he lied to the media when he said that he got no such suggestion from anyone on the board.

He was addressing the media ahead of the South Africa tour. He unnecessarily brought up the issue of what transpired in the selection committee.

There are no rifts between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, they support each other. Both are like Amitabh and Dharmendra.

Do players hide their injuries to play?

Maybe 10-15% do that and they ask us to let them play but medical science does not let them. Players obviously want to play; they do not want to miss any matches.
India have a solid pace attack at disposal. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, etc. form a lethal fast-bowling department for Team India. Ishant, being the senior of the lot, has seen his compatriots' rise over the years. Recently, he opened up on Mohammed Shami and how the West Bengal pacer had impressed former Indian captain MS Dhoni during a net session almost a decade back, in 2013.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, on their 'Rise of New India' show, Ishant recalled the first time Shami bowled in Team India nets and described it as being “very skiddy”. The 34-year-old further added that Shami was called to the Indian net session in 2013 amid the presence of then captain Dhoni, who was thoroughly impressed with the speedster's skills.

MS Dhoni said, 'Wow, he is good': Ishant Sharma recalls former captain's words on star India bowler

India has been on a winning spree in Tests at home since the past decade, more so that their record at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi is terrific. India hasn’t lost a Test match at this venue since 1987 while Australia hasn’t won here since 1959. Now ahead of the second Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, head coach Rahul Dravid addressed the media, and when asked about this terrific record at this very venue, Dravid played it down saying a) he wasn’t aware of it, and b) he doesn’t want India to be complacent after Nagpur win.

Having played against the mighty Aussies enough to make a judgement about their winning trait, Dravid said the team and players are wary of the touring team's ability to make a comeback in the Test series, and that’s why they haven’t lowered their guards going forward.

In a sting operation done on the BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma, he has opened up about multiple scams going on in Indian cricket including alleged doping, which is sure to blow the roof off for the game. As first reported by the Zee Media, Chetan in a sting operation, claimed that many players in Indian cricket take injections to get fit even when they are not. Not only this, Chetan also admitted that huge stars, unnamed here, also take injections, and that they have their own doctors outside of cricket who are available for them on the drop of the hat for the same.

In the sensational sting operation that will likely change the dynamics of Indian cricket going forward, some uncomfortable claims include that the players are taking "fake injections" – something the board and selectors are aware of but not sure as to who they are, as it is not easy to keep a tab on everyone.

Sharma was also heard saying that nearly 80-85% players are unfit during the selection time, and that’s when they request the selectors to keep them in contention.

He further said that some star players are given a green signal from the NCA even when they are not fully fit, and then it gets onto the selectors to make a final call on the selection.

Chetan said all these players who take injections to fake fitness have their own doctors outside of cricket who are available to provide them with shots so that they can be deemed fully fit ahead of crucial tournaments.

In a sting operation done on the BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma, he has opened up about multiple scams going on in Indian cricket including alleged doping, which is sure to blow the roof off for the game.

ALSO READ: Exclusive: Virat Kohli tried to defame Sourav Ganguly in the media but it backfired, says Chetan Sharma Sharma was also heard saying that nearly 80-85% players are unfit during the selection time, and that’s when they request the selectors to keep them in contention. #WIONWorldBreaking#GameOver | "They (players) take injections and it is almost impossible to detect": Chetan Sharma (@chetans1987), Chairman, Selection Committee, @BCCI, on fake fitness certificates issued to players of the Indian cricket team LIVE TV: https://t.co/iSR65rNilR pic.twitter.com/vYr3ubjcAq — WION (@WIONews) February 14, 2023 × When asked what are these injections about, if they are some painkillers, see what Chetan Sharma had to say about it in this video given below - https://t.co/M71JW7JdhR — WION (@WIONews) February 14, 2023 ×

EXCLUSIVE: In big expose, BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma reveals players take 'injections' to fake fitness

MS Dhoni-Gary Kirsten had a memorable run as captain-coach for Team India from 2007-2011. Under them, India scaled new heights by becoming the No. 1 Test side for the first time ever, winning the CB Series in Australia in 2008, beating New Zealand in their own backyard in ODIs and Tests, drawing a Test series in South Africa and winning the 2010 Asia Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup.

Recently, Kirsten spilled the beans on working with Dhoni. The former South African opener recalled the time he was appointed as India's head coach in December 2007 amid the "superstar" culture in the Indian team and revealed how Dhoni was different than the lot as he focused on team goals than individual milestones.

Kirsten explained, "Any coach would want a group of players playing for the name on the front of the shirt and not the name on the back of the shirt. India is a tough place with a lot of hype around individual superstars, and you often get lost in what your own personal needs are. And Dhoni meanwhile was standout as a leader as he was so focused on the team doing well, he wanted to win trophies and have great success and he was very public about that. And that pulled a lot of other guys into line, and quite simply, Sachin started enjoying cricket as well."

"MS and I formed the most unlikely partnership of captain and coach you will ever imagine in international games, and we end up having this incredible journey together," he added.

Kirsten-Dhoni's partnership was hailed for the team environment they created together. All the players came together for one goal; i.e. winning the 2011 ODI WC on home soil and were determined to top the ICC Test Rankings, a feat they attained in late 2009. Kirsten vacated the post after India's historic ODI WC triumph and was succeeded by Duncan Fletcher.

Chetan Sharma sting operation: BCCI chief selector breaks silence on Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli rift

India will be hosting Australia in the second Test, of the four-match series, which gets underway on February 17 (Friday). Cheteshwar Pujara, India's No. 3 batter, will be playing his 100th Test and become only the 12th Indian to enter the 100-Test club. He will become the second active Indian player to achieve the feat after Kohli (105 Tests).

Ahead of the second Test, in the national capital, R Ashwin lauded Pujara. He, however, pointed out -- in his column for ESPNCricinfo -- that Pujara and even Murali Vijay, who recently retired from international cricket, are not celebrated enough.

Ashwin said, "M Vijay, according to me the greatest opener for India outside of Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag, and Puji are quite similar in that they haven't been celebrated enough. They also had some of the most hilarious arguments. They used to do the most difficult job in Test cricket - play out the new ball in testing conditions, as we tend to need to do whenever we go abroad - so it is par for the course to have a few eccentricities emerge from that kind of partnership."

Further, the wily off-spinner Ashwin hailed Pujara's stubbornness, which has broken down the best of the attacks in the recent past. In this regard, he said, "Pat Cummins bowls good ball after good ball, changing the angles, trying a bouncer, trying a sucker ball, but all he gets from Puji is the leave or the dead defence. Actually I don't recall thinking Puji had a great defence when I first saw him, but his stubbornness is such that he has broken down the best of the attacks with his defence."

"Most batters add to their game when they are successful or cut out some elements when they are failing, but Puji keeps trusting his method. You can't convince him to change. I used to use a Tamil nickname for him with Shankar Basu, our previous trainer: Mirugam, the beast. Just like a beast focuses single-mindedly on its prey, Puji focuses on batting," he added.

Pujara has had a glittering career in the red-ball format. In 99 Tests, he has 7,021 runs at an average of 44.15 with 19 tons and 34 half-centuries. He will aim for a memorable outing on his 100th Test and take India to a 2-0 scoreline with another impressive win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

IND vs AUS: R Ashwin names India's star batters who are 'not celebrated enough'

Mohammed Shami remains an integral part of Team India across formats. At 32, the pacer has represented India in 61 Tests, 87 ODIs, and 23 T20Is, claiming 219, 159, and 24 scalps respectively. While he is spearheading India's pace attack in the ongoing home Test series versus Australia, there was a time in Shami's career when he was contemplating retirement. After going through a lot in his personal life in early 2018, Shami's fitness standards dropped and he was out of the Indian team. Just when he thought about retiring from the game, the then bowling coach Bharat Arun took him to then head coach Ravi Shastri and the former revealed how Shastri came to Shami's aid.

'I am very angry and I want to quit cricket'

Arun told Cricbuzz, "Just before the 2018 tour of England, we had a fitness test and Shami failed it. He lost his place in the Indian team. He called me and said he wanted to have a word with me. So I invited him to my room; he was going through personal turmoil. His fitness was affected, mentally he was gone. He came to me and said 'I am very angry and I want to quit cricket'. I immediately took Shami to meet Ravi Shastri. We both went up to his room and I said 'Ravi, Shami wants to say something'. Ravi asked what it was and Shami told him the same thing that 'I don't want to play cricket'. Both of us asked 'What will you do if not play cricket?' What else do you know? You know how to bowl when given the ball."

Arun added, "So Ravi said 'It's good that you're angry. This is the best thing that has happened to you because you have a ball in hand. Your fitness is poor. Whatever anger it is that you have, take it out on your body. We are going to send you to National Cricket Academy and want you to go there for 4 weeks and stay there. You will not go home, and only head to NCA. It suited Shami also because he had a problem going to Kolkata then so he spent 5 weeks at the NCA. I still remember the call he made and told me 'Sir, I have become like a stallion. Make me run as much as you want'. The 5 weeks that he spent there, he realised what working on fitness can do to him."

Not going home and working on his bowling and fitness worked wonders for Shami. He missed the one-off Test versus Afghanistan in June 2018 but returned to the Test squad for the away series in England, claiming the second-most wickets for India (17).

After that, there was no looking back for Shami. He was India's top performer in the away ODI series versus New Zealand in early 2019, took a hat-trick in the 2019 ODI World Cup, and remains an indispensable part of India's pace attack in red-ball format to date. He is also a vital part of India's plans keeping the WTC final and 2023 ODI World Cup in mind.

I want to quit cricket: Ex-India bowling coach recalls Shami's words, reveals how Shastri motivated him

Mohammed Shami remains one of the main bowlers for India. He is currently spearheading the pace attack in the ongoing Australia home Tests with Jasprit Bumrah not yet fully fit. Shami has been an important asset for India over the years and has continued to deliver crunch spells from time to time. In 2018, he had gone through a turbulent time on the personal front after his estranged wife Hasin Jahan levelled serious charges against him.

Shami's ex-wife had lodged a police complaint and accused the pacer of domestic violence and even of match-fixing; claiming that the Indian pacer received money from a Pakistani woman. As soon as the news spread like wildfire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) upheld Shami's contract. In addition, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) urged the Indian board to seriously look into the matter. Later, Shami was cleared of all charges.

Recalling the whole episode where he was investigated for match-fixing allegations on Shami, Ishant Sharma said on the latest episode of 'Rise of New India' on Cricbuzz, "I had a word with him and he did share of lot on the topic. Whatever had happened, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had approached us all, and they had asked us whether Shami could do a match-fixing or not. Just like policemen lodge a complaint...I was asked everything and all was written down. I had told them, 'I don't know his personal things but I'm 200 per cent sure he can't do that because I know him that well." When he heard I said those words, he realised that what I think of him and our bond became stronger."

Later, Dinesh Karthik -- India's veteran keeper-batter -- also spoke highly of Shami and said on the show, "If I have to use one word for Shami, it will be "torture Shami." Because in my whole career, he is the toughest bowler I have faced in the nets, he has got me out a couple of times as well in the match. But he has been nasty to play in the net. I thought I was the only one, so then I asked Kohli and Rohit, and they are all legends of the game, and they all said they hate playing Shami."

Shami has moved past all the allegations levied by his estranged wife and has been a key weapon in India's success since then. He claimed a hat-trick in 2019 ODI World Cup and was part of India's memorable journey in the inaugural WTC, where they lost the final to New Zealand. He was part of the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup campaigns; picking six wickets in as many games in the last edition at an economy of 7.15.

At present, Shami is part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Test squad for the ongoing Australia home series. He accounted for three scalps and scored an entertaining 37 in the first Test in Nagpur. The second Test kicks off on February 17 in New Delhi.
