Indian T20I team captain Hardik Pandya was a surprised man after his team lost the first T20I match against New Zealand. Pandya said the amount of spin the NZ bowlers extracted in the second innings, made life tough for the Indian batters. "No one even thought the wicket would play like that, New Zealand clearly played better cricket and they are the deserved winners. The ball was turning more with the new ball than the old one, caught by surprise by the bounce and turn." Still in the nascent stages of his international captaincy career, Pandya, however, was blunt in his assessment of the bowling performance. He said the bowlers conceded a little too many at the fag end of the New Zealand innings. "On hindsight, I don't think this wicket was 177, we were poor with the ball and we ended up giving 25 runs more than the par," said Pandya at the post-match ceremony. "We're a young group, we make mistakes but we need to learn from it, that's how we're looking at it as well." However, the opposite transpired. The dew wasn't as heavy and New Zealand started with Micahel Bracewell. The off-spinner got the ball to turn and bounce as opener Ishan Kishan was outfoxed by a pearler that kissed the top of off. Bracewell seemed amazed like Pandya and said, "We were surprised with the turn, in the first innings too and we were fortunate to bowling second and the turn was still there." Such was the control of spinners that opposition captain Mitchell Santner managed to bowl a maiden over to Suryakumar Yadav, of all batters. "It was a bit of a shock for everyone involved as to how much it spun in the second innings. It was a great game, pretty tight in the end. And it was nice to see the ball spin a bit more," said Santner. 'No one thought...': Hardik Pandya surprised after defeat against New Zealand in first T20I

The first T20I match between India and New Zealand took place in front of a capacity crowd at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. While both sets of players in the match took to the ground, none received as loud support or whistle as a man sitting in the hospitality stand of the stadium. It was former Indian captain MS Dhoni, for whom the Ranchi crowd had reserved the biggest cheer of the night. His fan following left New Zealand allrounder Jimmy Neesham perplexed. When asked during the post-match show about the crazy fan following of Dhoni, Neesham said it was a 'great feeling' as it allowed players like him to slip under the radar. "It's a great feeling actually. You sort of feel, you can fly under the radar. No one is really there to watch you bat or bowl," he said. "Everyone is there to watch someone else. I always quite enjoyed it to be honest, coming to India knowing that the pressure will be on someone else." 'No one is there to watch you bat or bowl': Jimmy Neesham in awe of MS Dhoni's fandom

Cricket has changed a lot since the invention of T20 format. Not only in the manner of how it is played and approached, in the way of how it will be led heading forward as well. While a little more than a decade back a single captain leading a team across formats was considered normal but now with the surge in the franchise-based T20 cricket and with everyone trying to try their hand at everything available, this doesn’t look like a reality. Expressing his opinion on the same, former India opener Aakash Chopra said the days of a single captain leading in all formats are now over.

Adding that teams will adapt this policy of split captaincy heading forward, Chopra said India, for the meantime will have Rohit Sharma as their ODI and Test skipper at least until the 2023 home World Cup.

As Hardik got appointed as the new T20I captain and is likely to stick around in this role till the next T20 World Cup; Aakash feels Rohit could also pave way for someone younger in the longer formats - probably like Rishabh Pant or even Shubman Gill, both of whom he believes have the potential to lead the Indian team in future.

“I don’t think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team’s captain till the WTC, that’s not going to change - it is going to stay like that. Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team," Aakash Chopra said on JioCInema’s new daily sports show, Aakashvani.

“In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India’s captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future," Chopra added.

While Rishabh Pant is currently out of the setup, getting treated for a road accident he suffered in December last year; Shubman Gill is enjoying his time out there – pilling up huge runs. Even in the recently-concluded New Zealand ODIs, the young right-handed batter scored his maiden double ton in the first game. He followed up with yet another century in the third ODI in Indore, and ended the three-match series with 360 runs to his name.

Ahead of the 1st T20I between India and New Zealand at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, the former Indian captain and local boy MS Dhoni paid a visit to the team. In a video uploaded by the official handle of the BCCI, Dhoni is seen having a giggle and a few words with everyone around, mainly with the newly-appointed T20I captain Hardik Pandya – whom he shares a great camaraderie with, and also with Ishan Kishan, who belongs from the same state. Shubman Gill, who shined with the bat in the ODI series having scored a double hundred and a ton, was also seen having a laugh with the veteran keeper-batter.

What MS Dhoni is up to nowadays?

Having retired from international cricket in August 2020, MS Dhoni continued playing in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings. Leading the side to its fourth title in 2021, Dhoni will be plying his trade in the cash-rich T20 league for the final time in the following season as speculations of him hanging his boots after IPL 2023 are doing rounds. Currently training for the upcoming season, MS Dhoni’s videos of training in the nets are going viral on the social media.

India eye complete domination over Kiwis

Following an emphatic ODI series win over New Zealand, the Men in Blue will be in action in the T20Is, starting on Friday, January 27th in Ranchi. In absence of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, opener Shubman Gill who is coming off a belter of a series will aim to carry his form in the shortest format where he is likely to get paired with either the local star Ishan Kishan or the returning Prithvi Shaw.

Having the number one T20I batter in Suryakumar Yadav playing at 4 gives India the boost they need against the new-looking Kiwi side. In Deepak Hooda and Hardik Pandya, the all-rounders box is ticked while the highest wicket-taker in the NZ ODIs, Kuldeep Yadav will cherish getting an extended rope in three games to come.

Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik look certain to start as the team management might also select Shivam Mavi as an additional seamer on the Ranchi pitch that is known for offering movement and bounce. Meanwhile, it will be exciting to see how the management fits newcomers keeper-batter Jitesh Sharma and fast bowler Mukesh Kumar in the playing XI during the series.

Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand scheduled to begin on Friday, January 27th in Ranchi, due to a wrist injury. Gaikwad complained about wrist pain following Maharashtra’s Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad where he scored 8 and 0 in two innings. The right-handed batter has now checked into the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation. The team management has, however, decided to not name any replacement, thus assuring the returning Prithvi Shaw a sure-shot chance in the playing XI.

Gaikwad injured, again

Meanwhile, this is not for the first time that Gaikwad will be missing a series due a wrist injury. During 2022 as well, he missed one T20I against Sri Lanka because of a similar injury. In addition to this, he also missed last year’s home ODI series against West Indies after testing positive for COVID-19.

Injury to Gaikwad leaves team India with three openers in Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. While Shaw and Ishan look certain to start, Gill could either be demoted to number 3 or rested for the New Zealand T20Is. With Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya all set to seal the middle-order spots, Washington Sundar and Shivam Mavi could be asked to fill the all-rounders place.

Kuldeep Yadav, who was among the wickets in the ODI series that India won 3-0, will be a sure-starter whereas T20 specialist Arshdeep Singh could also be seen in the playing XI. While there will be a toss-up between Yuzvendra Chahal and newcomer Mukesh Kumar for a spot in the team, the management will be tempted to pick Umran Malik as the second seamer.

Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022 revealed by ICC

Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI hundred in three years while Shubman Gill continued his domination with another sublime ton as India completed a clean sweep with a 90-run win over New Zealand in the third match here on Tuesday.

Batters from both sides lit up the dead rubber as 680 runs were scored at the Holkar Stadium.

Rohit (101 off 85 balls) got to the three-figure mark for the first time since January 2020 while Gill (112 off 78) scored his fourth ODI hundred to take India to 385 for nine.

Following twin failures, the New Zealand top-order put up a much better show. Devon Conway (138) stitched crucial partnerships but Shardul Thakur (3/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/62) regularly struck to bowl out the Balck Caps for 295 in 41.2 overs.

It was India's second consecutive clean sweep, having beaten Sri Lanka last week. After Hardik Pandya (1/37) got rid of Finn Allen (0), Conway shared 106 runs with Henry Nicholls and 78 runs with Daryl Mitchell (24).

In the absence of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, the Indian bowlers struggled initially, leaking runs as Conway tonked the ball all around the park.
Shardul, however, managed to turn the game, as he took back-to-back wickets of Mitchell and Tom Latham (0) in the 26th over.

In his next over, Thakur sent Glenn Phillips (5) packing with a cross-seamed delivery.
Umran Malik (1/52) then got Conway as the centurion pulled awkwardly with Rohit doing the rest at midwicket as the match seemed to slip out of New Zealand's grasp.

The spin duo of Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/43) then cleaned up the tail.

Earlier, Rohit and Gill put up a belligerent 212-run opening stand, sharing 22 fours and 11 sixes between them.

Rahul Dravid joked on the eve of the match that bowlers don't want to bowl as soon as they land in Indore because of the batter-friendly conditions. The batting great had a point, and the New Zealanders rolling over their arms during the first 25 overs would have shared Dravid's sentiment.

At one point every ball that Rohit and Gill's bat touched was either flying to the boundary or over it.

Gill hit four fours and a six to plunder 22 runs off Lockie Ferguson in the eighth over, symbolising the kind of form the 23-year-old has been in lately.

The youngster didn't have to even time the ball for it to run to the boundary. After three fours, he launched the short ball for an upper-cut six.

With the outfield quick and the wicket flat, the rather inexperienced New Zealand bowling unit had no answers to the Indian openers' carnage.

The 26th over saw both Rohit and Gill getting their centuries. Rohit pulled away to deep square to get to his mark and, three balls later, Gill got to the triple-figure mark, his third in four innings.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham used as many as six bowlers and it was his sixth option -- spinner Michael Bracewell -- who provided the tourists their first breakthrough.

Trying to slog one out of the park, Rohit missed the ball as it kept low and turned to eventually hit the stumps. His wicket was met with a roar by the partisan crowd, welcoming Virat Kohli (36).

A miscued shot in the next over spelt the end of Gill's innings as New Zealand struck twice in quick succession.

Ishan Kishan (17) didn't look too comfortable and took nine balls to open his account. A yes-no with Kohli, who had sprinted halfway, marked the end of the wicketkeeper batter's stay in the middle.

New Zealand were able to bring down the boundaries and sixes and, looking to play a big shot, Kohli couldn't beat Finn Allen at mid-off.

Firmly on course for a 400-plus score, India endured a familiar middle-order batting collapse, before Hardik Pandya (54 off 38 balls) provided the final flourish.

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been ordered by a Kolkata court to pay a monthly alimony of $1600 (Rs 1,30,000) to his ex-wife in a domestic violence case. The said amount will be divided into personal alimony of $613 (Rs 50,000) and child allowance of $981 (Rs 80,000) Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan had accused him of domestic violence.

On March 8, 2018, Jahan lodged a complaint against her husband and his elder brother Hasib Ahmad, levelling allegations of threat, infidelity and dowry demand. At the time, Jahan's counsel argued that Shami pay a monthly alimony of $12,300 (Rs 10 lakh) which will be divided into two parts - personal alimony ($ 8,600) and child allowance ($3,700). Read more: Glad he is charged at last, after so long: Mohammed Shami's wife on charge sheet against husband However, even after receiving the ruling in her favour, Jahan said she will appeal the case as $613 as alimony per month was not enough for her. “Rs 50,000 is minimal for me so I have to challenge this. It’s true that the verdict is in my favour but I will go to the high court as the stipulated money for my maintenance is very less considering the income of Shami,” Jahan was quoted as saying by News 18. Jahan added that she had spent a lot of money fighting legal battles over the years and thus she deserved the money to lead a 'quality' life. "Since I don’t have any financial support or earning, I only know how I arranged the money for so long. Thus, I deserve much more alimony for spending a quality life.” Her counsel argued that since Shami's annual income stood at $850,000 (Rs 7 crore) for the financial year 2020-21, according to income tax returns, the demand for $12,300 (Rs 10 lakh) as alimony was not unjustified. Indian men's cricket team players on Monday visited the historic Mahakaleswar temple in Ujjain, ahead of the third ODI scheduled to be played on Tuesday. Batter Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the players prayed for the health and speedy recovery of their teammate Rishabh Pant. "We prayed for the speedy recovery of Rishabh Pant. His comeback is very important to us," Yadav was quoted as saying by ANI. "We have already won the series against New Zealand, looking forward to the final match against them." The Indian squad is currently in Madhya Pradesh to play the third ODI against New Zealand at the Holkar Stadium. Having already won the series, the players visited the temple and participated in the iconic 'Bhasma Aarti' of Lord Shiva in the early hours of Monday morning. Alongside Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Yadav and a few of the support staff could be seen participating in the ritual. What happened to Rishabh Pant? Pant was involved in a fiery car crash last month whilst travelling alone to his hometown in the Roorkee district of the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. The 25-year-old is currently receiving treatment at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and will remain there until he fully recovers. He is expected to be out of cricketing action for the next year and a half, according to various reports. Two-time winners India will enter the 2023 home World Cup as firm favourites, says ace Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. It was in 2011 when India last won the 50-over World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy and since then the Men in Blue managed to win just one more ICC trophy – 2013 Champions Trophy in England. Looking to end their trophy drought at home this time, India will come with all guns blazing when the tournament kicks-off in October this year. While speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravi Ashwin explained as to why the hosts will remain ahead of everyone else in the race for the title.

India has had a wonderful record at home since the 2019 World Cup in England. Not only have they defeated every touring country across formats, they did that in some style – winning matches by huge margins. Their win percentage at home is sky rocketing while their confidence is over the roof too. Citing this as one of the biggest reasons alongside playing at different venues throughout the year, Ashwin rates India’s chances of lifting the 50-over World Cup yet again very high.

"India’s ODI home record ever since the 2019 World Cup finished is extremely impressive. India have won against every team that’s travelled to India in this space, which are the West Indies, Australia, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. India’s home record is 14-4 in this space, which is a 78 to 80 percent win record in India. All 18 of these ODIs have happened in different venues every single time (14 venues). If you have to compare the same spree with Australia or England, the venues are pretty stock standard. They play all their Test matches at 4-5 venues, the ODIs at 2-3 venues, and so they know their venues are the back of their hand," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin, who was also part of MS Dhoni’s team that won the 2011 World Cup knows what its like to play and win in home conditions. Explaining that since India’s last WC win, every team has won its home World Cup – be it Australia in 2015 or England in 2019, Ashwin said, "India are going to be a bit of short-changed because of the different wickets at different venues."

"Since the 2011 World Cup, all teams have managed to win their home World Cup: India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019. This is no rocket science, knowing your conditions is extremely important. However, for India, in this regard is going to be a bit of short-changed because of the number of venues we play these games in. Every single time you play in some of these venues the wickets are going to be different. India does not have a stock standard Test, ODI or T20I season. You don't know how the FTP is going to pan out but it gets hard from the team or player's perspective," Ashwin added.

India’s second-leading wicket-taker in Tests will return to action during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy that begins on February 9th in Nagpur.

India won the opening match of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand but captain Rohit Sharma was not an impressed man with the performance of his bowlers. After Michael Bracewell's heroic knock infused energy into what was an otherwise dead contest and took the visitors nearly over the line, India's death-blowing was once again put under the microscope. Sharma reflected on the same and said his team slipped up on the particular front. "To be honest, the way he (Bracewell) was batting and the way it came on to the bat nicely, it was clean ball-striking." "We knew that if we bowl well, we would be okay unless we really slipped up with the ball. Unfortunately, that's what happened. I did say at the toss that I would like to see us challenge ourselves, not quite the situation I expected but that's how it is." Read more: India survive Bracewell-Santner scare, hand New Zealand 12-run defeat in 1st ODI After posting a mammoth 349/8 in the first innings, courtesy of a stunning double hundred from Shubman Gill, India were the firm favourites to wrap up the game. The bowling in the initial part of the chase was clinical with the Kiwis requiring 216 runs off the last 20 overs. With Bracewell and Mitchell Santner at the crease, India would have ideally liked to put the game to bed early. However, the defiant southpaws had other plans. Both the batters got stuck in and took the attack to the Indian bowlers. Bracewell was especially severe with his audacious strokeplay as Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur bore the brunt of it. The visitors managed to gather 113 runs between the 31 and 40 overs to set the stage for a grandstand finish. The NZ batters had the momentum but a target as big as 350 was always going to come with its set of challenges. In the end, the NZ side fell short by an agonising 12 runs margin. Bracewell was the last man to depart as India managed to cling on and register a win. "We were just trying to give ourselves a chance there. We managed to put a big partnership on but unfortunately, it wasn't enough. We fell 12 runs short, which is a bit of a bummer, really," said Bracewell after the match. WATCH | UNBELIEVABLE 200! Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya was dismissed in a rather controversial manner during the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

The incident transpired in the 40th over of the innings when Pandya was facing medium-pacer Daryl Mitchell. With wicketkeeper Tom Latham up on the stumps, Hardik seemingly got beaten on the fourth delivery of the over.

The ball passed perilously close to the top of off and landed in Latham's gloves. The zing bails, however, lit up a nanosecond later, thereby suggesting that the ball had dislodged the bails.

The on-field umpires went upstairs to third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan for confirmation. The umpire, after multiple viewings gave Pandya out on the big screen, much to the dismay of the viewers and the batter himself.

The replays showed that the ball had passed the stumps without making any contact. However, Latham's gloves had brushed the bails and after he lifted them to collect the ball, they were dislodged.

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri who was in the commentary box at the time said Mitchell and New Zealand should be 'happy' that it was given out.

“Should really be happy, because that, if you take a look again as to where the keeper’s gloves are, where the ball is as it passes the stumps, it looked as if the ball was at least an inch, inch-and-a-half above the stumps," said Shastri.

"You can see as it goes past into the gloves, there’s no red light, it’s only after that. There you go. From that angle you can see that the gloves are closer to the bails than the ball.”

He has been replaced by Madhya Pradesh and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Rajat Patidar. "Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management," read the official statement by BCCI. The first ODI is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has opened up for the first time after not being selected for the first two Test matches of the upcoming Border Gavaskar trophy. The right-hand dasher said he wasn't able to sleep after receiving the news of his snub. "I came from Assam to Delhi the day after the selection and wasn’t able to sleep the whole night. I kept asking why am I not there," said Khan in an interview with The Indian Express. "But now after speaking to my father, I’m back to normal. I will never give up practice, I will not go under depression. Don’t worry, I will keep trying.” The in-form batter had all the reasons to be dejected. Having scored a truckload of runs in the domestic circuit for the last couple of years, many had anticipated that Khan's selection in the Test team was only a matter of time. “I was down completely. It’s natural for anyone, especially once you have scored so many runs. I’m also human, not a machine. I too have emotions. I spoke to my father and he came to Delhi. I just had a practice session in Delhi with him." “Everywhere I go, I hear murmurs that he will play for India soon. On social media, I have thousands of messages talking about my exclusion. Sab bolte hain tera time aayega (everyone says your time will come)." Khan's career average of 80.47 is only second to the great Donald Bradman who retired with an average of 99.9. The Mumbai batter revealed that he met chief selector Chetan Sharma who had assured him that his time will come. "Recently, I met Chetan Sharma sir (chief selector) while we were checking in at the hotel in Mumbai. He asked me not to feel disheartened, and that my time will come. Good things take time to happen. You're very close (to an India berth). You'll get your chance. So, when I played another important knock, I had expectations. But it's alright." 'I wasn’t able to sleep': Sarfaraz Khan on missing the India call-up for the Australia series

Out-of-favour India opener Murali Vijay is not thinking about a comeback in the Test team and instead has taken a dig at the BCCI in his recent remarks. Having last played a Test against Australia in Perth five years ago, Vijay said he is done with the board and that he wishes to seek opportunities outside of India. If not for his records, Vijay was well-known for his defensive technique that helped him find success on the overseas tours – be it in England, South Africa or even Australia. The Tamil Nadu right-handed batter wants to play a bit of competitive cricket before hanging his boots altogether.

In a latest conversation with the former Indian women’s team coach, WV Raman during Wednesday with WV – a weekly show in Sportstar, Vijay said, "I am almost done with BCCI and looking for opportunities abroad. I want to play a little bit of competitive cricket."

Talking about the age-old stereotypes in India regarding an athlete’s image if he or she crosses a certain age, Vijay slammed this, and said even at 38, he believes he can deliver on the top of his game. He also urged the media to address such stereotypes differently. Bashing the board further for not providing him with more chances after he got snubbed from the Test side owing to series of poor performances, Vijay said he felt he did everything he could do but somethings are not in his control.

"After 30 in India, it’s a taboo (smiles). I think people see us as 80-year-olds walking on street. The media should also address it differently. I feel you are peaking in your 30s. Sitting here right now, I feel I can bat the best way I can. But unfortunately, the opportunities were less, and I had to search for chances outside. I honestly feel as a person, you can only do what’s in your hand. You can’t control the uncontrollable. Whatever happened, happened," Vijay said.

Murali Vijay has had a successful Test career. Debuting in 2008 against Australia in Vidarbha, Vijay scored 3982 runs at a healthy average of above 38 including 12 hundreds. Off his famous outings in Tests, his 144 against the mighty Aussies at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2014 is one of his best. His 146 against England in Nottingham also stays fresh in the fans’ memories. Murali Vijay last played his Ranji Trophy game in 2019 against Karnataka.

I want to play a little bit of competitive cricket." He also urged the media to address such stereotypes differently. 'Done with BCCI', out-of-favour opener takes a dig at board as he looks out for opportunities abroad

On Thursday (January 12), Rohit Sharma-led India defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in pursuit of 216 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata to earn an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. After winning the series opener by 67 runs, in Guwahati, India dismissed the Lankans for 215 in 39.4 overs before attaining the target in 43.2 overs with four wickets in hand.

While Md Siraj (3 for 30) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 51) were the star performers with the ball, India managed to get past the finish line in the run-chase, after tottering at 86 for 4, courtesy of KL Rahul's gritty 64 not out and vital contributions from Rohit, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Kuldeep (10 not out). Meanwhile, Virat Kohli -- who scored his second successive ton during Guwahati ODI -- perished for a nine-ball 4; being cleaned up by Lahiru Kumara.

After Kohli's dismissal, many on social media platforms criticised his ability to bat under pressure. However, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir backed Kohli and said on Star Sports, "Virat Kohli is there because he is Virat Kohli. He has scored tough runs for India whenever needed."

'He has scored tough runs whenever needed': Gambhir backs Kohli after poor outing in IND-SL 2nd ODI

MS Dhoni achieved almost everything in his glittering cricketing career. Having debuted in late 2004, he became a household name very soon and led India from 2007 to 2016. Under him, India won all major ICC titles and even attained the No. 1 spot in Tests. He himself made the right noise, ending with 17,266 runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons, 634 catches, 359 sixes and 195 stumpings.

During the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup, in England and Wales, many believed that it was Dhoni's last international event. After Virat Kohli-led India's semi-final exit, the keeper-batter surprised one and all by not announcing his retirement and took a sabbatical for the rest of the year. In early 2020, Covid-19 pandemic struck the world and when IPL was set to kickoff in September-October, in the UAE, Dhoni stepped aside from international cricket on August 15.

R Sridhar, India's former fielding coach, revealed an unheard story about Dhoni's retirement. He revealed that the legendary cricketer had dropped a massive retirement hint while in conversation with Rishabh Pant ahead of the reserve day's play between India and New Zealand in the first semi-final of CWC'19.

"I can now reveal that at the time of the interview to the BCCI, which I attended from Antigua, I was reasonably certain that for all practical purposes, MS had played his last match for the country. He hadn't announced it, of course, but I will tell you why I knew. On the morning of the reserve day in our World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Manchester, I was the first person at the breakfast hall. I was nursing my coffee when MS and Rishabh walked in, picked up their stuff and joined me at my table," Sridhar wrote as he shared the incident in his book, ‘Coaching Beyond- My days with the Indian cricket team’

Rishabh told MS in Hindi, 'Bhaiyya, some of the guys are planning to leave for London today itself privately. Would you be interested?' MS replied, 'No, Rishabh, I don't want to miss my last bus drive with the team.'"

He had taken me into confidence. I couldn't shoot my mouth off. So, I didn't utter a word not to Ravi, not to Arun, not even to my wife," concluded Sridhar.

Dhoni will next be seen in action during IPL 2023 where he will lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

'No, Rishabh, I don't want to...': R Sridhar narrates unheard story about MS Dhoni's retirement

On January 11 (Wednesday), Rahul Dravid celebrated his 50th birthday ahead of India's second and penultimate ODI versus Sri Lanka. After winning the series opener by 67 runs, in Guwahati, Indian players reached Kolkata -- venue for the second ODI -- and celebrated head coach Dravid's birthday in the team hotel. On Thursday (January 12), Rohit Sharma-led India gave a perfect gift to Dravid by beating the Lankans by four wickets, in pursuit of 216, but there is sad news from the Indian camp.

As per reports, coach Dravid is reportedly unwell and hasn't travelled with the team to Thiruvananthapuram for the third and final ODI. According to India.com, he left for his hometown Bengaluru after he felt uneasy in the hotel as his BP shot up. While the former Indian captain stayed through the match at Kolkata, after having medicines, it isn't clear if he will join the Indian team in time for the inconsequential ODI.

No official update regarding Dravid's health has been shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Indian fans will hope that the 50-year-old recovers in time and joins the team ahead of their upcoming home assignments, against New Zealand and Australia.

Talking about the second and penultimate ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka & Co. opted to bat first but only managed 215 in 39.4 overs after being well-placed at 102 for 1. In reply, India was tottering at 86 for 4 before KL Rahul's 64 not out propelled them to a four-wicket win, with 40 balls to spare.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit was asked if India will tinker with their winning combination and give a chance to the benched players. To this, he said, "We haven't thought about it yet, once we get there we'll have a look at the pitch and have a look at some of our guys. There are 3 ODIs coming up against New Zealand as well, so we need to keep the guys fresh. We've got a long season now and we need to keep everything in mind. If needed, we'll make some changes."

IND vs SL: Rahul Dravid unwell, head coach likely to miss 3rd ODI due to health issues

KL Rahul has had a topsy-turvy ride in terms of batting at different positions across formats in his career. Having made his Test debut at number six at the MCG in 2014, KL was asked to open in the following Test in Sydney. Even in the white-ball cricket, he was looked up to as the perfect opener given his exploits early in his career before he was made a makeshift middle-order batter a couple of years back. After trying him again at the top of the order in ODIs where he didn't really find his Midas touch in some time now, KL has again been asked to take over the number five spot in the lead up to the home World Cup. However, after playing a match-winning knock against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the 30-year-old talked about his new role.

Batting at number five benefited both India and KL Rahul himself as in 15 innings he has batted at that position, KL has scored at an average of 54.25 and a strike-rate of 102.03. He also has six fifties and a hundred to his name, and above all, he has looked settled and has given India the much-required stability that they were missing.

Speaking with Star Sports after the match, KL said batting at number five helped him understand his game a little bit better. He also revealed that Rohit Sharma wants him to bat at the same spot only.

"Batting at No. 5 has just helped me understand my game a little bit better. Given the ball is slightly older, you have to play spin straightaway and that's not what I am used to usually. Obviously, Rohit [Sharma] is very clear that that's where he wants me to bat and he's conveyed that to me. So now I am challenging myself to get used to this position," Rahul told Star Sports after the second ODI.

The right-handed batter said the best thing about batting at number five is that you don't have to rush into batting.

"One thing I really enjoy is that you don't have to rush back into batting. You get time to put your feet up, have a nice cold shower, have a good meal and then relax and then see what's happening before walking in. That's the good thing about batting at No. 5," he added.

Now that he plays as a keeper-batter in the team, KL elaborated on his dual role saying he has thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure and likes this responsibility.

"I've played at No. 5, I've played at No. 4, I've been asked to keep wickets. I think it is very fun for me. I have thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure. It tells me that the team trusts me and backs me. It has helped me understand my batting and myself better. When you decide to choose a team game as a sport or profession, you have to be ready or flexible to do whatever job you're asked to do," KL added.

After winning the ODI series in Kolkata, both India and Sri Lanka will face off in the final One-Dayer at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15th.

Batting at number 5 helped me understand my game better - KL Rahul after Kolkata heroics against Sri Lanka

India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first ODI, in Guwahati, to go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Tuesday (January 10). Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has slammed KL Rahul for not being consistent and finding different ways to get out.

In the ODI series opener, India rode on skipper Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 113 not out to post 373/7. Later, India defended the total by restricting Sri Lanka to 306 for 8, to win by 67 runs. Talking about Rahul, he donned the wicketkeeping gloves and made a 29-ball 39. Just when he was looking set, he departed after being cleaned up by pacer Kasun Rajitha.

Thus, Azhar told PTI, "I think Rahul is getting out in a lot of manners. Primarily, it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection first up that is causing problems," said Azhar, who further added that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper should work with the coaches to rectify his batting flaws.

"I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul's case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify his flaws. In my opinion, he is a good player but consistency is missing in his game," Azharuddin was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Rahul, the former vice-captain, will need to pull up his socks given Ishan Kishan -- who scored a double ton in his last ODI -- is waiting in the wings. The stylish right-hander will be hungry for some big knocks in the remaining SL ODIs.

'Poor shot selection is causing problems': Azhar slams India batter for 'getting out in a lot of manners'

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was known for being a dependent batter for India across formats and playing with a lot of aggression. Post his retirement, he dons the role of a commentator-cum-expert and doesn't shy away from making big statements. Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI between India and Sri Lanka, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday (January 12), Gambhir claimed that 'Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting'.

Speaking to Star Sports, in the pre-match panel discussion, Gambhir made the glaring remark when the host reminded him that Rohit is just one hundred away from equalling Ponting's tally in the format (30 tons). Just then, Gambhir summed up the discussion by saying, "Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting because Ricky Ponting has a shit record in the subcontinent."

Speaking about Ponting and Rohit's numbers, Punter was Australia's Mr. Dependable across formats -- though T20Is came very late during his career. He did struggle in Asian conditions, with only one solitary hundred in India in Tests but still ended with 11 centuries overall in the subcontinent. He ended with 13,378 and 13,704 runs in Tests and ODIs, respectively.

Meanwhile, Rohit is a white-ball legend and has come to his own in Tests since late 2019. He still doesn't have great numbers in ODIs in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and South Africa whereas he recently slammed his first overseas ton in whites during India's tour of England in 2021.

Just then, Gambhir summed up the discussion by saying, "Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting because Ricky Ponting has a shit record in the subcontinent." He did struggle in Asian conditions, with only one solitary hundred in India in Tests but still ended with 11 centuries overall in the subcontinent. He ended with 13,378 and 13,704 runs in Tests and ODIs, respectively. Meanwhile, Rohit is a white-ball legend and has come to his own in Tests since late 2019. Rohit Sharma-led India have locked horns with Sri Lanka in the second and penultimate ODI on Thursday (January 12), at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. At the coin toss, Dasun Shanaka once again called it right as the Islanders have opted to bat first in a bid to level the series after losing the opener by 67 runs in Guwahati.

As India will hope to restrict the Lankans for a low total, captain Rohit will also aim to surpass AB de Villiers in an elite list. Rohit needs 41 runs to surpass De Villiers in the list of most runs in men's ODIs. At present, Hitman has 9,537 runs in 236 matches, including three double tons. He averages 48.90 with a strike rate of 89.64.

De Villiers, who announced a shocking international retirement in May 2018, ended his stellar run in ODIs with 9,577 runs at 53.50 and a strike rate of 101.09. Not only de Villiers, Rohit can also overtake Adam Gilchrist in this list. He needs 83 runs to move past the former keeper-batter's run-tally (9,619). Given Rohit loves batting at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, expect him to come out all guns blazing in the second innings.

After losing the toss, Rohit said, "I was in two minds. Wanted to bat first because of how we played last time, but looking at this ground, I wanted to field. Overall, improvements are as a team, nothing in particular. What we've done in the past is in the past, we need to look ahead and keep doing better. I love playing here, the crowd is also energetic and that motivates me always. But it is in the past, I need to start fresh. IND vs SL: Rohit Sharma 41 runs away to surpass AB de Villiers in elite list in 2nd ODI

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not in favour of running out Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka on the non-striker's end after his premier bowler Mohammed Shami did just the same in the first ODI in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not in favour of running out Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka on the non-striker's end after his premier bowler Mohammed Shami did just the same in the first ODI in Guwahati on Tuesday. With the match's outcome all but decided, Shami steamed in to bowl the 50th over. However, on the fourth delivery of the over, Shami broke his stride and ran out the Sri Lankan skipper on the non-striker's end after he had strayed out of the crease. Shami clipped the bails and burst into a semi-celebration as the umpire sent the call upstairs to the third umpire. In the meantime, skipper Sharma rushed to Shami, trying to understand the situation. After figuring out what his bowler had done, Sharma went to the umpire and told him the Indian side was withdrawing the appeal. Shami took his captain's argument in a healthy way and also signalled the umpire to void the Indian appeal. Notably, Shanaka was on 98, two runs away from a deserving century when Shami ran him out. In the post-match presentation ceremony, Sharma shone light on the incident and said he had no idea that Shami inflicted the non-striker's runout. He went for the appeal. He (Shanaka) was batting on 98 and the way he was batting was brilliant. So, you've got to give it to him. We didn't want to get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we'll get him out. Hats off to him. He batted really well." Sharma reflected on the same and said the bowling upfront enabled India to avoid any late innings blues. "We started off really well with the bat. It was a great effort for all the batters. The platform was set to play freely for all the batters. We could have bowled slightly better. I don't want to be too critical about it. The dew was not that much but it was still difficult to bowl. We got wickets upfront with the ball which helped us with the momentum." India will now take on Sri Lanka in the second ODI match at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday. India is set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup in October-November. It will be the first time that India will solely host the showpiece event and the ardent Indian cricket fans have their hopes pinned on Rohit Sharma & Co. During the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10), former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- an integral part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team when they lifted the ODI World Cup in 2011 (co-hosted by India, SL and Bangladesh) -- narrated an unheard story from the ODI WC final, held 12 years back in Mumbai.

India met Sri Lanka in the title clash in the 2011 edition at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The Islanders rode on Mahela Jayawardene's sublime ton to post a challenging 274 for 6 in 50 overs. In reply, India were 31 for 2 before being 114 for 3 with Gambhir and Dhoni getting together for the fourth wicket. The duo stitched a memorable 109-run stand and took India past the finish line, with six wickets in hand, courtesy of Gambhir's 97 and then captain Dhoni's 91 not out. While Dhoni finished it off in style, with a six in the penultimate over, Gambhir weathered the early storm and set it up for India. He, however, missed out on becoming the first Indian to slam a hundred in the WC final; falling short by three runs.

Speaking to Star Sports during the 1st ODI match between India and Sri Lanka on Tuesday, Gambhir recalled how supportive Dhoni was during his memorable knock and pushed him to get to his century.

“MS Dhoni was very supportive because he wanted me to get a 100. He always wanted me to get a hundred. He told me between overs as well that 'get your hundred, take your time and don't rush into it. I can accelerate if there is any need to',” Gambhir revealed.

Despite Dhoni's encouragement, Gambhir fell short of reaching the triple-figure mark. Nonetheless, Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh (21 not out) took India home as they lifted the mega title after 28 years. Will Rohit & Co. replicate the same feat later this year? Only time will tell...

2022 ended on a disappointing note for Team India as Rishabh Pant suffered injuries during a freak car accident on December 30. Pant was invovled in a horrific accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway and immediately taken to the Max Hospital, Dehradun. He was recently airlifted, on BCCI orders, to Mumbai and is undergoing treatment at the Kokilaben Hospital. The wicketkeeper-batter is on the road to recovery and his ligament injury is expected to heal in three to four months. While his return to the Indian team can take longer than expected, Sourav Ganguly -- former BCCI chief and Delhi Capitals' Director of Cricket -- has confirmed that Pant will miss IPL 2023.

"It will take time to heal. We cannot do anything. It's an accident. He is just 23. He has got a lot of time. Rishabh Pant will not be available for the IPL. I am in connection with DC. It will be a great IPL. We will do well. Pant's injury will affect DC," Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata.

In Pant's absence, Delhi's squad will be jolted and they will have to appoint a new captain. David Warner, who joined the DC franchise last year, is a frontrunner to lead the side. Under him, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had won its maiden IPL championship in 2016. Here's DC squad for IPL 2023:

Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant (now ruled out), Phil Salt (ENG)

Batters: Yash Dhull, Sarfaraz Khan, Ripal Patel, Rovman Powell (WI), Prithvi Shaw, David Warner (AUS), Rilee Rossouw (SA), Manish Pandey.

All-rounders: Lalit Yadav, Mitchell Marsh (AUS), Axar Patel.

Bowlers: Khaleel Ahmed, Aman Hakim Khan, Praveen Dubey, Kuldeep Yadav, Mustafizur Rahman (BAN), Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Lungi Ngidi (SA), Anrich Nortje (SA), Vicky Ostwal, Chetan Sakariya, Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma.

India faced Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (January 10) in Guwahati. Being asked to bat first, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 87-ball 113 to post a mammoth 373 for 7 and later defended the total with Sri Lanka managing 306 for 8 in their full quota of overs. Thus, India kicked off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations in style with an easy 67-run win as former captain Kohli set the platform with his 45th ton in the format, 73rd overall.

Kohli came out to bat, at No. 3, with India well-placed courtesy an impressive 143-run opening stand between Rohit and Gill. Kohli stitched handy stands with Shreyas Iyer (28) and KL Rahul (39) to slam an impressive ton. His inning was a mixture of finding the boundaries and running hard between wickets but the former skipper wasn't pleased with vice-captain Hardik Pandya turning down a run during their 27-run fifth-wicket stand. The incident took place in the 43rd over when Kohli and Hardik completed a run but the former was keen to sneak in another single. Just then, he looked at Hardik and tried to persuade him but the vice-captain refused and turned down the chance to complete a double. Kohli wasn't impressed with Hardik and gave him a stare. Prithvi Shaw, on Wednesday (January 11), broke a plethora of records as he slammed a magnificent 379 in Mumbai versus Assam clash in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 edition. After dominating Day 1, Shaw continued in his aggressive manner and reached his first triple-ton in domestic cricket in just 326 balls and accelerated further to end his inning at 379, off 383 balls. His knock was studded with 49 fours and four sixes at 98.96. Courtesy of his marathon knock, the 23-year-old slammed various records.

It is to be noted that Shaw became only the ninth batter to surpass the 350-run mark in a Ranji inning, and overtook some big names such as Swapnil Gugale (351*), Cheteshwar Pujara (352), VVS Laxman (353), Samit Gohel (359*), MV Sridhar (366) and Sanjay Manjrekar (377). When he was just 21 runs away from touching the magical 400-run mark, Riyan Parag dismissed him lbw before the lunch break.

In an interview with Sportstar after end of Day 1's play, Shaw spoke at length about the challenges of managing expectations and handling criticism. He said, "I have realised that whenever you score runs, you are on top of the world. But when you don't score then people will come after you. Expectations kaafi rehte hai [there are quite a lot of expectations] when you score regularly, so when you suddenly get out early in three or four innings, people start thinking 'yaar, yeh hai woh hai [people start questioning you].' Only you know whether you are following the process, or whether you are being disciplined more than before, are you sleeping on time, eating well before a game. All those things matter. I am just trying to follow those things and I am trying to spend time alone as much as possible. I cut out the outside noise - be it on social media or in other platforms."

Shaw further asserted, "I try to avoid those things or at times, just ask my manager to handle social-media activities. I have brand commitments, and that's why it is not possible to stay away from social media, and thus, you eventually end up seeing what's being written or spoken about. But I am still trying to cut out the noise as much as possible. People are talking about you and then will continue doing the same even after 10 years, so you should not think too much about it, because if you start reading too much between the lines, you will be affecting yourself."

With some a record-breaking knock, Shaw has raised his stocks and will certainly be under the radar of the BCCI selectors when they meet to announce the white-ball squads for the upcoming home series versus New Zealand. Despite his heroics in the domestic circuit, he has been overlooked for national duties. Shaw has only played four Tests, six ODIs and a solitary T20I since his international debut in late 2018.

Here are some records achieved by Shaw following his daddy hundred: Highest score in Ranji Trophy: 443* - BB Nimbalkar (Maharashtra) v Kathiawar, 1948 379 - Prithvi Shaw (Mumbai) v Assam, 2023 377 - Sanjay Manjrekar (Mumbai) v Hyderabad, 1991 366 - MV Sridhar (Hyderabad) v Andhra, 1994 — Kausthub Gudipati (@kaustats) January 11, 2023 × Players with "100+ runs before lunch" twice in the same first-class match: Gilbert Jessop (Gloucestershire) v Yorkshire, 1900 Prithvi Shaw (Mumbai) v Assam, 2023 Shaw did it in the same innings while Jessop did it in different innings. Since India's ten-wicket loss at the hands of eventual winners England in the T20 World Cup semi-finals last year, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul haven't played the shortest format. In the limited matches that India have played following the T20 WC debacle, Hardik Pandya has led the young side as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on rebuilding the side with new faces. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka ODIs, in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10), captain Rohit stated that he has not given up on the format just yet.

As Kohli and Rohit have expressed their avaliability for T20Is, it has been reported that the BCCI might ask them to reconsider their future in the format. As reported by the Indian Express, the matter is set to be discussed by the selection panel in the next few days when the committee meets to announce the squads for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

With 2023 being looked upon as an important year for the senior men's team, with the World Test Championship (WTC) final and ODI World Cup to be held later this year, the Indian senior players have been told to focus on the longer formats. With the need of the hour to assemble a young squad and adopt a more fearless approach in T20Is, the board is keen to rebuild the team under Hardik Pandya and give him enough time before the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hence, a clarity will be needed about the future of Rohit and Kohli in the format.

Ahead of the India-SL first ODI, in Guwahati, skipper Rohit addressed the pre-match press conference and spoke at length about his T20I future. "At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it's a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it's not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided to just look at some players' workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format," Rohit said ahead of the ODI series opener.

SERIOUS PACE! Umran Malik breaks own record, bowls fastest ball by an Indian during IND-SL 1st ODI

Virat Kohli commenced 2023 in style. With India being asked to bat first in the three-match ODI series opener versus Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (January 10), Kohli banked on a great start provided by Rohit Sharma (83) and Shubman Gill (70) to score a magnificent 87-ball 113 and take the home side to a mammoth 373 for 7 in 50 overs. With his 73rd international ton, 45th in the ODI format, Kohli broke a plethora of records and has begun the new calendar year in style as Rohit & Co. have commenced their ODI World Cup preparations.

Ahead of the ODI series opener, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar pinned his hopes on Kohli to return to his 'original heights' in the World Cup year. Speaking to Star Sports, Manjrekar pointed out that Kohli will get back to his best and play to his strengths, by knocking the ball around and rotating the strike, in the 50-over format.

"It's 2023, it's a 50-overs World Cup year. The 50-overs format is brilliant for people who want to get into form. Guys who are short on confidence. It's going to be great for Rohit Sharma. 50-overs cricket is right down his lane, he is already an all-time great. The 50-overs format suits him the most," Manjrekar said. He further asserted, "In 50 overs format, 65 percent of the runs that are scored are in ones and twos, and Virat Kohli loves getting his runs through ones and twos. This will take the pressure off. T20Is, he feels the pressure of going after the bowling. This might just be a brilliant year for Virat Kohli to come back to his original heights."

Manjrekar mentioned that it is not fair to say Kohli underwent a lean patch in ODIs, although he slammed his first ton in the format after 2019 during the third and final tie in Bangladesh, in early December. The former cricketer stated that the former skipper contributed with useful knocks and will be more consistent as the year progresses. "See, he has got those innings. Let's be fair. Even when the hundreds haven't come, he has scored runs, he has been in form. We have said multiple times in the last two years that he has been in form. But, the form doesn't carry on. After a hundred, the next two-three innings are not big scores. That's what we are waiting for. This format will allow him. It will give time for Virat Kohli to be the consistent player that he was known as," he added.

Kohli has surely lived upto Manjrekar's expectations with an impressive knock in the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday. Being asked to bat first, India ended on 373 for 7 and will aim for a big win over the Islanders to go 1-0 up in the series.
