The BCCI in its latest review meeting in Mumbai on Sunday, January 1st, is believed to have targeted 20 probable players for the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India this year. The meeting is said to be attended by head coach Rahul Dravid, all-format captain Rohit Sharma, NCA head VVS Laxman and chief selector Chetan Sharma while new BCCI boss Roger Binny was available via video conferencing.

Off the many takeaways from this review meeting, one that headlined is that NCA will be monitoring those players’ workload management while working in tandem with their respective IPL teams.

Other than this, India’s failed World T20 campaign was also discussed while talks on some future events including the World Test Championship cycle and the roadmap to 50-over World Cup were also held.

"It was a very constructive and fruitful meeting where we have reviewed the past performance and planned for the future events, including World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). We will give preference for international cricket while making sure the IPL is not diluted," a BCCI source, who attended the meeting, said.

"The issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were also discussed at length during the meeting along with the roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023," the BCCI source said.

Something else that was given preference was the fitness aspect with the famous Yo-Yo Test being the chief criteria.

"The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players," the BCCI said in a statement after the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is all set to take on the visiting Sri Lanka against whom they will play 3 T20Is and as many ODIs, starting with the 1st T20I in Mumbai on Tuesday, January 3rd.

This update comes as a big boost for Rishabh Pant, his family members and his well-wishers across the world.

It was during the wee hours (around 5:22 am) on Friday morning when Rishabh’s car – Mercedes GLE crashed into the roadside dividers on Delhi-Dehradun highway, and then flipped, catching fire later on. DDCA director Shyam Sharma provides latest update on Rishabh Pant, says he's responding well to treatment

As 2022 came to an end, we take a look at who were India’s top performers across formats during the&nbsp;last year. Surprisingly, the list doesn’t include two of India’s stalwarts – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. On the last day of 2022, the BCCI listed out best performers from each format.

To begin with, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah were&nbsp;the two standout players in red-ball cricket. While Pant scored 680 runs in seven matches at an astonishing average of 61.81 with two centuries and four fifties, Bumrah picked up 22 wickets in just five matches played – averaging 20.31 with the ball, having the best-match figures of 8/47.

Moving to the shorter formats, batter Shreyas Iyer had a phenomenal year in ODIs -&nbsp;hitting 724 runs in 17 matches. He scored six fifties and a hundred averaging 55.69. In the bowling department, seamer Mohammed Siraj performed the best. In 15 ODIs in appeared in last year, Siraj picked up 24 wickets at an average of 23.5.

In the T20Is, one name that just had to be there was that of Suryakumar Yadav. Country’s newest batting sensation, SKY, as he is often known as, scored 1164 runs in 31 matches. In addition to averaging&nbsp;46.56, which is anyway considered superb in T20s, Surya scored two hundreds in the same year – which is joint-highest by an Indian in this format.&nbsp;To accompany him on the list is the swing specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who picked up 37 wickets in 32 games played&nbsp;at an average of 19.56, with best-match figures of 5/4, that came against Afghanistan during the Asia Cup.

While there were many standout performances to cherish throughout the year, it didn’t go well for team India in terms of success across formats as they lost the Asia Cup, the T20 World Cup and even the away Test series against South Africa.

Come this year, the Men in Blue have a lot of look forward to including the upcoming home Test series against Australia alongside the Asia Cup and then the 50-over World Cup in India.

South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar believes his team has it in them to stage a comeback in the final Test in Sydney, which begins on January 4th. After losing the first two Tests by significant margins, South Africa not only lost the series but have also slipped to the fourth position (PCT - 50.00) below Sri Lanka (PCT - 53.33) in the World Test Championship points table.

This leaves them in a dicey situation as if they lose another Test, their percentage would drop further and their chances of making it to the finals will slim down as well. For them to somehow remain in the race, they need to beat Australia at the SCG.

Talking about his side’s chances, captain Elgar said the team plays for the badge, and that every player will have to put up a massive effort to ensure the result goes&nbsp;their way.

After the first Test at the Gabba, Brisbane that ended inside two days, for which the pitch also received a ‘below-average’ rating by the ICC,&nbsp;the next match – the Boxing Day Test was played at the iconic MCG, where Australia won the contest by an innings and 182 runs.

While Australia will miss the services of their premier pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Cameron Green in the third Test as both are out with&nbsp;finger injuries, the hosts have added spinner Ashton Agar and batter Matthew Renshaw to the squad as their replacements.

On the other hand, the Proteas will also be without their batter Theunis de Bruyn, who would be returning home for the birth of his first child. Van der Dussen is most likely to replace him in the XI.

Following the accident, the cricketing world went into a tizzzy with everyone from across countries sending best wishes for Pant. From Virender Sehwag and Anil Kumble to Ricky Ponting and Kevin Pietersen, everyone tweeted about Pant's well-being. Earlier, Jay Shah - BCCI secretary, also informed everyone about Rishabh's situation in this tweet. My thoughts and prayers are with Rishabh Pant as he fights his way back to recovery. I have spoken to his family and the doctors treating him. Rishabh is stable and undergoing scans. We are closely monitoring his progress and will provide him with all the necessary support. — Jay Shah (@JayShah) December 30, 2022 × Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant was not picked for India's white-ball series against Sri Lanka, starting with a T20I in Mumbai on January 3rd. He was rather asked by the board and management to report to NCA to work on strength and conditioning. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly played down the idea of an India vs Pakistan Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Stuart Fox,&nbsp;Melbourne Cricket Council (MCC) chief&nbsp;alongside the Victorian Government recently inquired about the possibility of hosting both India and Pakistan for a three-match Test series at the 'G'.

The idea that seemed great on paper doesn't really concern the BCCI members. Speaking on the topic, a BCCI source told ANI,&nbsp;"No such plans for India and Pakistan Test series in the future or in any country, if someone has such kind of wish keep it to yourself."

It was during the recently-concluded Boxing Day Test between Australia and South Africa at the iconic MCG that Stuart Fox confirmed his interest in the same while speaking with SEN Radio on the sidelines.&nbsp;

"Absolutely. Three [Tests] in a row would be lovely at the MCG. You'd fill it every time. We have asked. We've taken that up with Cricket Australia. I know the [Victoria] government has as well. Again, it's enormously complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy schedule. So I think that's probably the greater challenge" Fox said.

India and&nbsp;Pakistan haven't faced each other in a Test match since 2007 while no bilateral series between the two teams have taken place since 2013.&nbsp;

In 2022, both teams met three times - twice during the Asia Cup in Dubai where both won a game each, and lastly during the T20 World Cup at the MCG - where India won the contest on the final ball.

However, after BCCI refused to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023, the PCB has threatened to boycott the 50-over World Cup in India, scheduled for October-November next year.

BCCI plays down idea of India-Pakistan Test match at the MCG - Reports

Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has&nbsp;quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. "It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6."

India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

The discussion is over: Gambhir feels 'it has to be Ishan Kishan' who should open with Rohit in ODIs

Former India opener and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir urges the selectors, coaches, and even the management to put some cricketers&nbsp;like Prithvi Shaw, in particular, on the right track. Despite knocking on the selectors' doors for some time now, Pant hasn't gotten the chance that he deserved. Aware of his performance in the domestic circuit, Gambhir -&nbsp;who had his share of challenges during his early days, feels Shaw must get back into the reckoning, and for that, coaches and selectors must play a role.

Speaking at length on this on Star Sports, Gambhir questioned the roles of these heads&nbsp;saying,&nbsp;

“What are coaches there for? What are selectors there for? Not just to select the team or probably do those throwdowns and make them ready for the game. Ultimately, it is the selectors, the coaches, and the management, who should try and get these guys, especially someone like Prithvi Shaw, on the right track,” Gautam said.&nbsp;

Gambhir also wants either of Dravid or the management to have a clear and transparent conversation with Shaw about his future as he feels such players cannot get wasted.

“That is one of the jobs of the management is. It is not only about preparing them for a game or helping them in the practice sessions. If that is the case, whether it is Rahul Dravid or the national selection chairman should have a word with him and show him the clarity and probably keep him around the group,” Gambhir&nbsp;added.

Gautam is of the opinion that any player who plays for India must tick all the boxes, be it fitness-wise or discipline-wise, and that is where the trainers come into the picture. He further feels Shaw is too good a cricketer to be left out, and that it's high he should be given more chances to prove his worth.

Gambhir concluded by saying, "If you are dedicated enough, passionate enough, to go on play for the country, you have got to do all the parameters right. Whether it be fitness or discipline. There are trainers who should be pushing Prithvi Shaw to do that. You should give a young boy at least one chance or probably a couple of chances, if he still does not do that, then probably he is not passionate enough to play for the country.”

Just two days before India's first international assignment in 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a review meeting to analyse India's T20 World Cup 2022 performance with regular captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and NCA chief VVS Laxman. The meeting, as per a report in India Today,&nbsp;will take place on January 01 in Mumbai.&nbsp;

The likes of Rohit, Dravid and even Laxman will be present as the board will have a review of India's dismal campaign in the 2022 edition of the T20 WC, held in Australia.&nbsp; Heading into the T20 WC as the No. 1 ranked T20I side, India had everything going for them as they topped their group with wins over Pakistan, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, respectively, but lost to South Africa, by a close margin, before falling flat in the semi-finals versus eventual winners England (by ten wickets). India's orthodox approach with the bat and some ordinary fielding efforts -- especialy in the game versus the Proteas -- were criticised by many. Moreover, Yuzvendra Chahal wasn't given a single game which raised eyebrows.&nbsp;

Will some big decisions be taken post the BCCI review? Will it be split captaincy and split coaching for India? Only time will tell...

After the T20 WC, Indian team have tried to tweak their line-up and are aiming to build a new squad around Hardik Pandya. Hardik hasn't officially taken over as the T20I captain but many believe he is set to take over with senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, etc. shifting their focus towards the 2023 ODI World Cup; likely to be their swansong from international cricket.&nbsp;

For the home T20Is versus SL, BCCI announced a fresh 16-man squad under Hardik. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, etc. have been named in the squad sans Rohit, Kohli, KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Ahead of SL series, BCCI to hold review meeting on Team India's T20 World Cup campaign: Report

Ramiz Raja was recently removed as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. His stint was a controversial one with New Zealand withdrawing from their tour of Pakistan&nbsp;in September 2021&nbsp;just before the tour opener, whereas England cricket team also followed suit. While Australia toured and England also followed suit, with the Kiwis currently in Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs, Team Pakistan also had a mixed run -- ending second in Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022 -- before losing their first-ever Test series on home soil (against England).

Following the England Tests, Ramiz was ousted as the PCB chief. During his tenure, he spoke a lot against Indian cricket and often slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). All hell broke loose when Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that India won't travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and the continental tournament will be held at a neutral venue.

In reply, Ramiz slammed the BCCI and also went onto claim that Pakistan won't travel to India for the ODI World Cup, later next year, if the Asia Cup is moved out of Pakistan.

Speaking on Duniya News, the 60-year-old Ramiz has once again lashed out at the BCCI. He has urged the new PCB management to not fulfil each and every demand of the BCCI and show some leadership, which he claims was evident during his stint.

He&nbsp;said, "One positive from my stint as a chairman was that I provided leadership. If you remember, New Zealand had left, and we told them that what you did was unfair. The England team refused to come; we spoke with them, following which they played 7 T20Is instead of 5, two extra. The ECB staff visited Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium; they came to my office and apologised. Similarly, Australia also visited."

"What is leadership? When Asian Cricket Council has asked Pakistan to host a tournament and then India says they won't travel to Pakistan and shift the tournament to a neutral venue, what should be the response?&nbsp;Kya hum sab servant rahenge India ke, kyunki woh ek world power hain apne hisab se. Kya hum har cheez unki mante jayenge?" (Are we servants of India just because they are a world power in cricket? Should we listen to everything they say?)," Ramiz questioned.

The former Pakistan captain further believes that Pakistan is moving in the right direction and the current crop of players, and fans, should be respected by everyone and no one has a right to move Asia Cup out of the country. Ramiz added, "The Pakistan cricket team is enjoying a great run; you have a good fan following; you have superstars, so please give your team and fans the respect they deserve. There should be a decision on the matter, as the tournament was given to Pakistan, so how can it be shifted to a neutral venue without consulting us or the ACC members."

It is believed that Pant has suffered some injuries but is out of danger. A statement from the hospital is expected to be out later in the day. Pant has been India's mainstay across formats. He was part of India's 2-0 Test series win versus Bangladesh, in Bangladesh, but hasn't been named by the BCCI selectors in India's white-ball squads for the upcoming home assignments versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03.&nbsp;

As per reports, Pant had been advised to work on his fitness as he had been carrying a niggle on his knee for quite sometime. He was expected to return for India's four Tests versus Australia, on home soil, before the accident took place on Friday morning. One hopes for his speedy recovery and return to the 22-yard cricket strip sooner than later.

While there remains tension between India and Pakistan, due to the political relation, with both sides reluctant to travel to their respective nations for next year's Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is keen on hosting a Test match between the two heavyweights at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. This comes after the success of hosting the two Asian giants in the 2022 T20 World Cup on October 23.

While speaking on SEN radio during Day Four of the second and penultimate Test between Australia and South Africa, on Thursday (December 29), the MCC chief executive Stuart Fox revealed that the club, along with the Victoria government, had made an inquiry to Cricket Australia (CA) about hosting a neutral Test between India and Pakistan. A CA spokesperson has, in turn, confirmed ESPNCricinfo that the final decision to host a Test or a full series solely rests on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

"Absolutely. Three [Tests] in a row would be lovely at the MCG. You'd fill it every time. We have asked," Fox said. "We've taken that up with Cricket Australia. I know the [Victoria] government has as well. Again, it's enormously complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy schedule. So I think that's probably the greater challenge," he opined.

"Wouldn't it be great that it wasn't just Australia-centric and Victoria-centric, that we're catering for all the countries and filling the stadium all the time. So we have asked. "Hopefully, Cricket Australia keep taking it up with the ICC and keep pushing for it. When you do see some of the stadiums around the world unoccupied, I think it would be much better to have a full house and that atmosphere and celebrating the game with full houses," Fox further added.

India and Pakistan last played a Test series in 2007 when Anil Kumble-led India won 1-0. The two nations nowadays only meet in multi-nation or ICC events and their last face-off came during the 2022 T20 WC, in Australia, where Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. beat Babar Azam-led Men in Green by four wickets in a last-ball thriller at a jam-packed MCG, Melbourne.

In the ongoing second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, India and Australia have a strong chance of meeting in the final in June 2023. Pakistan, after their home series defeat versus England, have been out of contention. Currently, there is nothing scheduled between India-Pakistan&nbsp;for any bilateral cricket on the Future Tours Program (FTP) between 2023-2027, and, hence, if MCG manages to host even a Test, it will be a sellout in no time.&nbsp;

After T20 World Cup success, MCC keen on hosting India-Pakistan Test at the MCG

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's T20I and ODI squad for their upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 3. While some big names weren't part of the Hardik Pandya-led T20I squad, the ODI line-up&nbsp;feature&nbsp;Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes with no mention of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant (due to a niggle on his knee) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Moreover, all-rounder Hardik was also promoted as the ODI vice-captain despite&nbsp;Rahul's presence. Ever since Rohit took over, Rahul has been his deputy across formats but a string of low scores and Hardik's rise as a leader has resulted in the former losing out on his vice-captaincy post. In the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul had scores of&nbsp;22, 23, 10, and 2. Even in the ODIs, he scored a majestic 73&nbsp;in the series opener before not doing anything significant (scoring 14 and 8&nbsp;respectively) in the last two games. Thus, he knows he has to remain consistent or&nbsp;will lose his ODI spot as well in a World Cup year, with the mega event to be held later in 2023 in India.

Ahead of the SL ODIs, which commences on January 10, former Indian opener and Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir shared his take on the right-hander's form. "You can only control what you can control. You can't control selectors, you can't control what's going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That's all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you're putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in&nbsp;Star Sports' A Chat with Champions.

Gambhir, the T20 and ODI World Cup medallist, further added, "If you don't perform, someone else will take your position. That's not only with Sanju or KL, it's with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well. If they don't perform, you will start questioning about their positions too. That's what international cricket is about. No one is indispensable. So you got three ODIs, you bat in the middle-order, try and get those runs, because ultimately it's the performance that keeps you in the side. Not the name, not your talent."

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs

A lot of changes have taken place in Pakistan cricket in recent times. Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain, was recently sacked as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chief with Najam Sethi taking over. Moreover, Shahid Afridi was named the interim chief selector with Abdul Razzaq and&nbsp;Rao Iftikhar Anjum joining him on the panel as well. In addition, a lot has been said about Babar Azam as a Test captain but he remains the full-time skipper as of now.

Ramiz's tenure came to a sudden end after Pakistan lost their first-ever Test series on home soil, with England&nbsp;drubbing them 3-0. A lot has been said and written about his stint as the PCB chief. Recently, Ramiz blasted Najam Sethi and criticised the functioning of the PCB and once again took a shot at Indian cricket while pointing out the achievements of the national side in&nbsp;his tenure.

“We gave outstanding performances in white-ball cricket. We played the Asia Cup final, India didn't play that. India, a billion-dollar industry, was left behind. Tod phod hui, unhone apna chief selector, selection committee fire kar di, captain badal diye, kyunki unko hazam nahi hua ki Pakistan unse kaise aage nikal gaya. (They fired their chief selector, selection committee, changed the captain because they couldn't digest how Pakistan went ahead of them),” Ramiz told&nbsp;Suno TV.

Further, Ramiz talked&nbsp;about being sacked as PCB chairman and said,&nbsp;“This is just like France firing their entire board even after they played in the FIFA World Cup final.”

The former Pakistan star also revealed that he empowered Babar Azam at all times and ensured his best performances as leader of the side. "I tried my level best to keep this team united. A lot of changes have taken place in Pakistan cricket in recent times. Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain, was recently sacked as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chief with Najam Sethi taking over. Moreover, Shahid Afridi was named the interim chief selector with Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum joining him on the panel as well. In addition, a lot has been said about Babar Azam as a Test captain but he remains the full-time skipper as of now. Ramiz's tenure came to a sudden end after Pakistan lost their first-ever Test series on home soil, with England drubbing them 3-0. A lot has been said and written about his stint as the PCB chief. Recently, Ramiz blasted Najam Sethi and criticised the functioning of the PCB and once again took a shot at Indian cricket while pointing out the achievements of the national side in his tenure. “We gave outstanding performances in white-ball cricket. We played the Asia Cup final, India didn't play that. India, a billion-dollar industry, was left behind. Tod phod hui, unhone apna chief selector, selection committee fire kar di, captain badal diye, kyunki unko hazam nahi hua ki Pakistan unse kaise aage nikal gaya. (They fired their chief selector, selection committee, changed the captain because they couldn't digest how Pakistan went ahead of them),” Ramiz told Suno TV. Further, Ramiz talked about being sacked as PCB chairman and said, “This is just like France firing their entire board even after they played in the FIFA World Cup final.” Also read: Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Australia beat South Africa at the MCG The former Pakistan star also revealed that he empowered Babar Azam at all times and ensured his best performances as leader of the side. 'They couldn't digest how Pakistan....': Former PCB chief Ramiz Raja again takes a dig at India

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).&nbsp;

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.&nbsp;

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:&nbsp;

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

The BCCI selecton committee, led by outgoing chief Chetan Sharma, selected India's white-ball squads for their upcoming home assignments versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While Hardik Pandya was named the T20I captain, Rohit Sharma will continue to lead in ODIs and make his return straightaway during the 50-over series -- after a thumb injury he suffered during the Bangladesh tour. Meanwhile, the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rishabh Pant didn't find a mention in both the squads whereas veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the ODI setup after his stocks having fallen considerably in recent times.&nbsp;

There has been no update shared by the selectors regarding the absence of Bhuvi and Pant. While a lot has been said and written about Pant's T20I career, which has still not taken off, he was expected to be a part of the ODI squad versus the Lankans. However, no reason was provided regarding his absence.&nbsp;According to several reports, it has been revealed that the swashbuckling keeper-batter has been left out to be able to recover from the niggle that he has been carrying in his knee for quite sometime.

According to reports in The Times of India, Rev Sportz, and Sports Tak, Pant has had&nbsp;a niggle on his knee for quite sometime and has, thus, been rested from the SL series. It is believed that&nbsp;the youngster has been asked to report at&nbsp;the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru, from January 3 for 15 days to work on his knee and regain full fitness before the upcoming New Zealand and Australia series on home soil.&nbsp;

In Pant's absence, Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul are India's wicketkeepers in the ODI setup whereas Ishan and Sanju Samson are the two glovesman present in the T20I line-up.&nbsp;

EXPLAINED: Why Rishabh Pant isn't part of India's home white-ball series vs Sri Lanka

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named India's T20I and ODI squad for their forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka. The new year starts with India hosting Sri Lanka in three T20Is and ODIs each before New Zealand's white-ball tour and Australia's visit to the Asian country for four Tests and three ODIs. Hardik Pandya was appointed as the T20I squad whereas Rohit Sharma will return for the SL ODIs with the former being named his deputy despite KL Rahul's presence.&nbsp;

With Rahul being demoted and Hardik's stocks rising as captain, veteran Team India keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels Rohit and the star all-rounder will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the 2023 ODI World Cup. During a conversation in Cricbuzz, the 37-year-old pointed out that 'Hardik has thrown his name strongly in the mix' and will remain in the leadership group for quite long.

Karthik told, "Absolutely. I think leadership definitely, for me, is a close call. And I think it will be between Rohit and Hardik Pandya. These two are the big names. I know KL Rahul has been the white-ball vice-captain, but I do think Hardik Pandya has thrown his name strongly in the mix and it will be captain vice-captain role between a Hardik and a Rohit in the coming 12 months, because I think he has shown his skills in the IPL as a leader and that might be coming through soon for Team India as well."

"So, for the moment, it looks like even though there are a lot of other leaders who have captained India in the recent 12 months because of the amount of cricket played with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant. All these players donning the captain's hat for a bit. Jasprit Bumrah as well. But for the moment, it will be a toss up between Rohit and Hardik Pandya or rather Rohit and Hardik Pandya will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the World Cup for sure," concluded the keeper-batter.&nbsp;

Hardik is being touted as the next T20I captain as the BCCI selectors want a new squad to take charge in the shortest format with the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024, in West Indies and USA.

Shortly after Pakistan was whitewashed in their three-match home Test series versus England, Ramiz Raja was sacked as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief. Ramiz's tenure was expected to come to an end soon after Imran Khan, Pakistan's World Cup-winning skipper, resigned as the country's Prime Minister in April, however, the ex-captain held onto the post for a longer period.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, all hell broke loose for Ramiz after England thrashed Pakistan at home. His tenure as the PCB chairman was marred with controversies and he was often slammed for further deteriorating the cricketing relations between India and Pakistan with his continuous rant against the arch-rivals. Ramiz's criticism of Indian cricket increased ever since the BCCI made it official that Team India won't travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 and will shift the event to a neutral venue. To this, Ramiz had revealed that Pakistan also won't travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup if India boycott&nbsp;the Asia Cup in Pakistan.

The 60-year-old Ramiz has now opened up on why he was pained by India so much during his stint as the PCB chief.&nbsp;"I have got great regard for Indian cricket fans. I have enjoyed my stay in India over the years. Cricket breaks boundaries. I have received a lot of love from India as a commentator and as a cricketer. India thought Asia Cup cannot happen in Pakistan. India withdrew from Asia Cup without any discussion which was painful. I took a strong stance on this issue as a chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board," the former skipper said on his YouTube channel.

Earlier, Ramiz had made a big claim after BCCI's take on next year's Asia Cup. "If Pakistan doesn't take part in the World Cup scheduled in India next year, who will watch it? We have a clear stand: If the Indian team comes here then we will go for the World Cup. If they don't come then they can play the World Cup without us," Raja told Urdu News in November.&nbsp;

Thus, it remains to be seen what the future will look like for two mega events set to be held next year; i.e. the 2023 Asia Cup and ODI WC. However, Ramiz's rant against India didn't help the cause and even led to his sacking. He has now been replaced by Najam Sethi.

"I have got...' - Ramiz Raja opens up on continuous rant against India during his tenure as PCB chief

India's No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara revealed the reason behind&nbsp;team management's plan to promote Axar Patel ahead of Virat Kohli in the batting order during their nervy 145-run chase versus Bangladesh in the just-concluded second and final Test in Dhaka. With India being reduced to 12 for 2 in the final session on Day 3, many expected Kohli to walk out at his usual batting slot; i.e. No. 4.

Nonetheless, the Rahul Dravid-led team management surprised one and all and sent out Axar. Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator, wasn't impressed with the move and told on Sony Sports, "It didn't send a good message to Kohli. He is the best batsman in the world. Unless Kohli himself asked for it, then it's a different matter. We don't know what happened in the changing room. But it's hard to understand. Axar has played well, of course."

Jadeja,&nbsp;part of the Hindi panel, opined, "He is the world's best player. 15 overs were left. Saba Karim said it could have been because of the left-right combination, which is an obvious thought, but then I feel - did Rishabh Pant take a sleeping pill? I will also say that it is easy for us to say this from here; we don't know if someone was not feeling well."

Pujara, who won&nbsp;the Player-of-the-Series award, opened up on the move after the series triumph. Talking to the broadcasters, he gave an insight behind Axar's promotion and said, "It was a very good move because among their three strike bowlers, two were left-arm spinners. Axar is a left-hander, so he was sent to tackle them and to have a batter who can bat sensibly in the initial period against the Kookaburra ball. It was a crucial move for us. That was an important phase of the game where we didn't want to lose too many wickets in the evening, and he could have batted cautiously. So I was not surprised. When you are chasing a 145-run total, every run is important, and the way he batted, his innings was very valuable for us."

The left-handed Axar played a cautious 69-ball 34 whereas Kohli departed for 1 during India's three-wicket win over the Bangla Tigers. Shreyas Iyer's 29 not out and R Ashwin's 62-ball 42* held their nerves and took India home after they were reeling at 74-7 in the morning session of Day 4.

That was an important phase of the game where we didn't want to lose too many wickets in the evening, and he could have batted cautiously. So I was not surprised. When you are chasing a 145-run total, every run is important, and the way he batted, his innings was very valuable for us." The left-handed Axar played a cautious 69-ball 34 whereas Kohli departed for 1 during India's three-wicket win over the Bangla Tigers. Shreyas Iyer's 29 not out and R Ashwin's 62-ball 42* held their nerves and took India home after they were reeling at 74-7 in the morning session of Day 4.

Ishan Kishan created history by becoming the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs during the India-Bangladesh series in the latter's own backyard. Kishan opened the innings in the third ODI, on December 10 in Chattogram, with Shikhar Dhawan, in regular captain Rohit Sharma's injury, and made the most of his chances by slamming a mammoth 131-ball 210; the fastest and youngest to score a 200 in the format.

After the knock, the 24-year-old Kishan is expected to don the blues for a long time and has a strong chance to stake his claim in India's white-ball sides following his marathon inning versus the Bangla Tigers. Coming from Jharkhand, he is reckoned as the next-big-thing for India after MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who put Jharkhand on the map, had a stellar career for Team India -- with 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and leading India to three ICC titles -- has been Kishan's idol and the youngster reacted to him being compared with MSD.

Speaking to OneCricket, as quoted by News 18, Kishan said, "I love Gilchrist’s batting and wicketkeeping but about Dhoni Bhai; I’ve seen him on and off the field. The way he keeps his calmness intact and meets everyone. So, these things also matter in life, like how you function and get to know such a big player who functions in what way. So, I think, he has helped me a lot to understand those things."

Kishan added, "I take it [comparison with Dhoni] in a very positive way. I think, ‘Ok. If people are comparing me with MS, that means I’ve got something in me that’s why they want me to see at his place.’ So, I feel, If I can do 70 percent of what he has done for the country, I’ll be happy. Because he has done enough. He made us win ODI &amp; T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy. There are so many things and even I want to be in that situation where I can make my team win."

Kishan will be looking forward to India's upcoming white-ball series, at home, versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia before IPL 2023. The left-hander will want to remain consistent and aim for few more daddy hundreds to cement his place in the side.

Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) and R Ashwin (unbeaten 42) helped India win the second and final Test versus Bangladesh on December 25 (Sunday). Resuming Day 4 of the series finale, India were in need of 100 more runs, being 45 for 4, on a tough batting surface. At one stage, India were 74 for 7 before Ashwin-Iyer stitched a valuable eighth-wicket stand and took the visitors past the finish line in Dhaka.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After the end of the series, Iyer signed off 2022 on a high. He has been on a roll in every format and ended with 422, 724 and 463 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. He averaged 55.69 in ODIs, 60.28 in Tests and ended with a strike rate of 141.16 in the shortest format. He looked most comfortable while batting on Day 4 versus the Bangladeshi spinners and smacked a few boundaries to bring down the equation before Ashwin took charge and led India home in the Dhaka run-chase.

Now, former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has lavished huge praise on Iyer, calling him an all-format player. Kaif feels he is a complete batter and is even improving himself in tackling the short balls. "He is not scoring hundreds but scoring continuously in every match. If I was the coach, I will say that I can bet on him for at least 60 runs. He didn't look troubled at all, even if you talk about the ODIs," Kaif told Sony Sports.

"He can play all three formats. He has confirmed his spot in ODIs and Tests. You will play T20Is against Sri Lanka and New Zealand before the Test matches, so you should try him out. He is a player who hits sixes and also knows how to defend," Kaif opined.

Kaif, the 2002 Natwest Trophy hero,&nbsp;further asserted, "He is a proper batter, it is not that he has any weakness. Yes, people talk about the short ball but he will get better while playing."He didn't score too many runs in this knock but the time at which he came to bat, when the bowlers were dominating, the ball was turning, he removed the pitch from his mind and just watched the ball."

"It is very difficult to play for India. There is a lot of pressure because four players are waiting behind whoever is playing. If Shreyas Iyer gets out, someone or the other is waiting. He is scoring continuously, which shows he is extremely fit mentally," he added.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two pillars of Indian cricket, having served it at the top level for more than a decade now.&nbsp;With both staying at the helm of things at least until the 50-over World Cup next year, India’s chances of achieving a hurray at home grow big time. Another player who would be instrumental in helping India life the trophy next year is star batter Suryakumar Yadav.

Speaking with PTI in an exclusive-chat Suryakumar revealed about his relationship with both Virat and Rohit, and also spoke on the approach he will undertake for the mega event.

India, after a gap of 12 years, will be hosting the 50-over World Cup in October-November 2023. Given the success-rate in home conditions across formats in the past decade, let alone in ODIs, India are more than likely to start as favourites this time too.

However, with the Men in Blue failing to taste success at the ICC events since 2013 - when they last won the Champions Trophy,&nbsp; for them to end this drought now, a different approach needs to be adopted and Surya has something to add to this.

When asked about will he make any changes to his game given the change in format, Surya said, “I don't like to think too much when I am playing any format. Because I enjoy this game, whenever I go into bat, I put up a show. What I always dream and visualise is that whenever I go in; I want to be the game-changer. I have always loved batting whether it is T20Is, ODIs or Ranji Trophy. If I can do what my team wants me to do in 40-50 balls, why should I bat 100 balls?”

Speaking further on his relationship with two of the most important figures in Indian cricket right now – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar said, “I am actually very lucky that I share dressing room with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. They are a different breed of international cricketers. Things they have achieved, I don't know I will be ever able to achieve that.

Recently, I have had some good partnerships with Virat bhai and I have enjoyed batting with him. Rohit is like an elder brother and my sounding board. When I am in doubt, I ask him direct questions about my game. He has been a good guiding force since I joined MI in 2018.”

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had a good run leading the Indian team in the just-concluded Bangladesh Test, which the tourists won 2-0. He, however, fell flat as a batter while opening the innings with Shubman Gill. Rahul only managed scores of 22, 23, 10 and 2 in the four outings whereas Gill scored his maiden hundred in the format during the series opener in Chattogram.

After the Bangladesh Tests, India have a stern task ahead as they gear up to host Australia in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, starting on February 09. Ahead of the marquee series, on home soil, veteran Indian keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has issued a warning to Rahul to up his game or he will be left out with Gill's rising stocks.

“I would give KL those couple of Test matches, but if things don’t go KL Rahul’s way;&nbsp;the one thing that does go against him is the fact that he has played over 40 Tests and his average is just mid-30s. That is not acceptable for an opener. That is one of the lowest among Indian players for sure, who have played 35 Test matches,"&nbsp;Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

Karthik added, "That is something that he needs to definitely work on. That will be on his mind. If he wants to cement his place in the Test team, he needs to get a couple of hundreds against Australia. Otherwise, you can definitely see a change, with Shubman Gill doing so well."

There have been reports of Rahul being dropped from India's T20I line-up as well. The Men in Blue will host Sri Lanka, followed by New Zealand, in a white-ball series before the BG Trophy versus Pat Cummins' Australia.

India’s newest batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav is living his dream of being a number one batter in T20Is. Having made his debut in this format in 2021 only, Surya has achieved so much in so little time, something not only he but everyone is proud of.

In a recent exclusive chat with PTI, SKY, as he is often known by his fans, opened up about a lot of things including his success in the shortest format, what he thinks about making his potential red-ball debut against Australia next year and much more.

2022 has been a super year for the India batter. This year SKY scored two T20I hundreds - one against England in Nottingham and one against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, thus becoming only the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to achieve this feat. Apart from this, his run in the T20 World Cup was impressive too – where he was the third-highest run-scorer (239) and had a whopping strike-rate of 189.68 to his name.

To be seen and called as world's No. 1 T20 batter, if someone would have told me one year back, I don't know how I would have reacted. When I started playing this format, I wanted to be the best and I worked hard for it.

Surya was last seen during the New Zealand series right after the World Cup and since then he has been on well-deserved rest. With India now scheduled to face Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the white-ball series at home early next year, SKY will be returning to action.

However, going forward he also would like to replicate his white-ball performance in Tests as well if given a chance. As Australia is slated to tour India for the four Tests (that are also part of the WTC cycle) in February next year, Suryakumar will remain in reckoning for a Test call-up.

When asked about if he fancy his chances of making a Test debut in India’s next assignment, the star T20I batter said, “I started playing age-group national level cricket in red ball, so the answer lies there itself. There are a lot of tricky yet fascinating situations that you encounter across five days and you want to embrace that challenge. Yes, I am ready if they (Indian team management) need me.”

'Still feels like a dream to be seen and called as world's no.1 T20I batter' – Suryakumar Yadav

Hardik Pandya can replace Rohit Sharma to become the new white ball captain of the Indian cricket team, according to reports. The disappointing run in the ICC T20 World Cup and an ODI series loss against Bangladesh has put the team under a lot of pressure and a change in captaincy can be the first step towards rebuilding. Media reports claim that Rohit has been suffering from a number of injuries in the recent past and as a result, Hardik may become captain on a permanent basis.

Rohit became the T20I captain in 2021 during the home series against New Zealand and later in the year, he replaced Virat Kohli to become the ODI skipper. However, he has been plagued by injuries since then and he has also not played any part in the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh.

Pandya has been a revelation since making his return from injury as the all-rounder produced couple of good performances in the domestic circuit and followed it up with a brilliant display in IPL 2022. He was one of the top performers for the debutants Gujarat Titans and in his first year as skipper, he led by example to clinch the trophy. Reports claimed that Pandya has already been informed about the plan to replace Rohit and the BCCI are waiting for his availability in both T20Is and ODIs.

The all-rounder has led the Indian cricket team in 5 T20I with the team winning four. India will host Sri Lanka in January 2023 and although Rohit is all set to make his comeback from injury, there is a chance that the BCCI may opt for a change in leadership.

Hardik Pandya likely to replace Rohit Sharma as India's white ball captain: Report

Ravichandran Ashwin and Umesh Yadav took four wickets each as India bowled out Bangladesh for 277 on Day 1 of the second Test match in Dhaka on Thursday. In response, India were 19 for no loss with skipper KL Rahul batting on three and fellow opener Shubman Gill unbeaten on 14 runs.

Rahul was trapped LBW by Shakib Al Hasan in the final over of Day 1 but the decision was overturned by the DRS review. Replays showed that the ball would have missed the leg stump.

For Bangladesh, Mominul Haque was the top scorer with 84 but the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh looked comfortably placed in the encounter just after tea but the Shakib Al Hasan-led team lost their last five wickets for just 14 runs. Unadkat took his maiden Test wicket in Zakir Hasan while Ashwin (4/71) and Umesh (4/25) kept the pressure constantly on Bangladesh. Although Mominul did keep the scoreboard ticking on one end, a superb spell of bowling post-tea from Umesh yielded three wickets and ended the hosts’ fight.

It was also an emotional return for the pacer who picked up his maiden Test wicket by dismissing Zakir Hasan. Unadkat made his debut against South Africa in 2010 but went wicketless.

IND vs BAN 2nd Test Live Streaming: When and where to watch series finale in your country?

Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain, doesn't refrain from expressing his views and opinions on several aspects. He had been severely criticised for his take on mental health and depression a couple of months back. Now, the veteran has spoken at length about 'pressure' and termed it an 'American word'. Moreover, he has even slammed ones who complain about playing in the IPL.

Speaking to an audience in a public event, at Kolkata, which was live streamed on Facebook, Kapil said, "I keep hearing 'We are playing the IPL. There is so much pressure.' This word is so common, right? To them, I say 'Don't play'. Who is asking you to? There is pressure, but if you are playing at that level, you will be admired and abused. If you are afraid of abuses, then don't play. You are representing the country and you have pressure? How is that possible?"

<section>
The former all-rounder, who ended with 434 Test scalps, went ahead and said, "Out of a country of 100 crore, 20 of you are playing and then you say you have pressure? Instead, say it's a matter of pride. You are getting so much love from people. Learn to take that pride."

Kapil didn't mince his words and referred to the word 'pressure' as an American term. He even advised players should 'open a banana stall or egg shop' if they feel the pressure. In this regard, he added, "Pressure is an American word. If you don't want to work, don't. Is anyone forcing you? Jaa ke kele ki shop lagao. Ande becho ja ke. (Open a banana stall, go sell eggs). But when you have gotten an opportunity, why do you take it as pressure. Take it as pleasure and have fun with it. The day you start doing it, the job will appear easy. But if you call the same thing pressure, nothing good can come of it."

It remains to be seen how everyone reacts to Kapil's latest comments. In the modern era, players such as Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Glenn Maxwell, Sarah Taylor, etc. have opened up on mental health and many youngsters have also revealed they feel the pressure amid the intense competition and rigorious schedule in the current times. It will be interesting to see if any of them react to Kapil's take.

India's ongoing tour of Bangladesh saw Ishan Kishan create history. Kishan featured in India's playing XI in the third and final ODI, with regular captain Rohit Sharma being injured, and opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan. He looked in his elements from the word go and smashed a magnificent 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes, to become the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs.

Kishan became the youngster and fastest to score an ODI double ton. Overall, he became only the seventh to join the elite club -- comprising legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit, etc. Despite his recent heroics, the 24-year-old remains grounded and is destined for more success. Recently, a fan requested Ishan to give an autograph on his cellphone -- above MS Dhoni's. To this, the youngster won hearts with his gesture.

Kishan said in a video shared on Twitter, “Mahi bhai ka hai signature aur uske upar bol rahe hain mera karne…mereko thoda ho nahi raha hai&nbsp;(This is Mahi bhai’s signature and you are telling me to sign above it. I can’t do this). "Mahi bhai ka signature hai upar, abhi humlog utna pahunche nahi hai wahan par…neeche karta hun “I have not reached the level of MS Dhoni, I will sign in the bottom)," added the Indian keeper-batter.
