Rishabh Pant is an all-format keeper-batter for Team India. While his numbers in Tests are magnificent, with 2,123 runs in 31 matches including five tons and 10 half-centuries, he averages just 35 in ODIs -- with a solitary hundred in 29 games -- and an ordinary 22.43 in T20Is, along with a strike rate of 126.37. Thus, questions have been raised on India giving Pant a longer rope in limited-overs despite him still not performing at his best.

Before the start of the third and final ODI between India and New Zealand, in Christchurch, Pant had an on-air interaction with renowned broadcaster Harsha Bhogle. During the interaction, Bhogle spoke at length about Pant's ordinary white-ball numbers. To this, the 25-year-old gave a blunt reply while defending his overall run so far in limited-overs. Here's how the whole conversation panned out between the two:

Harsha Bhogle: "Maine Viru se bohut saal pahle ye sawal poocha tha, ab aap se puch raha hu. Aapko dekhke lagta hai, white-ball game inki khaas baat hogi but aapka Test record sabse accha hai. (Some years back, I'd asked the same question to Sehwag. Now, I'm asking you. Looking at you, we get the feeling that white-ball cricket is your USP but it's your Test record which has been better...)

Rishabh Pant: "Sir, record toh ek number hai. Mera white-ball record bhi kharab nahi hai. Thik hai T20 ka... (Sir, records are just mere numbers. My white-ball record is not bad. It is average in T20Is...)"

Talking about Pant's recent outing with the bat, the swashbuckling left-hander failed to get going and returned with a 16-ball 10 in the India-NZ third and final ODI, in Christchurch, on Wednesday (November 30). After being asked to bat first, India only managed a below-par 219 all-out in 47.3 overs with NZ being well-placed at 104/1 in 18 overs being rain played spoilsport and the match was called off eventually. NZ have won the three ODIs 1-0.

After Team India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, there were strong rumours of significant changes set to take place in the T20I line-up. With the national side set to focus on the 2023 ODI World Cup and with the second cycle of ICC World Test Championship also going on, many senior players will now shift their focus on the longer formats and reportedly Hardik Pandya is set to take charge of the T20I side.

As per a report in the PTI, BCCI is likely to give the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya for a longer duration with the senior players, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and the likes, set to focus on ODIs and Tests. It added that while the board won't push any senior player towards retirement from T20Is, a fresh team is likely to be given to Hardik.

"The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"You don't need to announce retirement if you don't want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year," the source added. Thus, this can mean the end of the road for Rohit, Kohli in the shortest format.

Hardik Pandya set to be India's new T20I captain with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli not in BCCI's plans: Report

After losing the first ODI by seven wickets, Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India couldn't level the three-match series versus hosts Kane Williamson's New Zealand, on Sunday (November 27), due to persistent rain in Hamilton. Thus, India will now aim to end the series with a 1-1 scoreline to sign off a rain-marred tour without losing the T20Is (won 1-0) and ODIs. The third and final ODI between the two heavyweights will take place on Wednesday morning (November 30).

India played Deepak Chahar instead of Shardul Thakur and roped in Deepak Hooda by dropping Sanju Samson in the second and penultimate ODI. Given India cannot play with only five bowlers, they added an extra bowling option in the second encounter. It seems they will go ahead with the same line-up, which will once again be harsh on Samson but seems inevitable. For NZ, they went ahead with Michael Bracewell -- in place of Adam Milne -- and it will be interesting to see if they back him or go back to Adam Milne. Given India's inexperience in the bowling department, Kiwis will start as favourites in the third and final ODI.

The World Cup Super League is a 13-team ODI competition, that operates within the framework of the Future Tours Programme (FTP). Apart from the regular Test-playing nations, the Netherlands is the only entrant to this Super League. While the top eight teams will directly qualify for the World Cup, the remaining five teams will be determined through the qualification matches. The tournament in India is slated to be hosted in October-November next year with ten teams.

As the format goes, the World Cup Super League is played over a two-year cycle and is designed to add context to the bilateral series. During this period, every team will play 24 matches. While a win gives 10 points, a tie or no result will be worth five points.

Afghanistan make the cut, Sri Lanka, and South Africa out of top-10

Courtesy of a win in the first ODI and little help from the rain in the washed-out 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan could collect 15 points that helped them enter the top eight and thus qualify for the World Cup. With 115 points in total, they are placed seventh on the list while Sri Lanka is struggling at the 10th spot with just 67 points to their name. Joining them on the bottom of the list are South Africa with 59 points.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has done the unthinkable! On Monday (November 28), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener flexed his muscles and smashed as many as seven sixes in a single over and returned with a majestic 220 not out, off 159 balls, in Maharashtra's quarter-final tie versus Uttar Pradesh in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 edition. Gaikwad went bonkers in the 49th over and hit seven sixes, including a six off a no-ball, to take his side to a mammoth 330 for 5 in 50 overs. It is to be noted that he has now become the first-ever batter, across all professional formats, to hit seven sixes in an over.

Being asked to bat first, Maharashtra lost Rahul Tripathi soon and got some contributions from the form of Ankit Bawne and Azim Kazi, who scored 37 apiece, but their innings were held together by captain Ruturaj. The right-hander held one end and carried his bat to score a magnificent double hundred, laced with 10 fours and 16 sixes at a whopping strike rate of 138.36. Ruturaj, who isn't part of India's upcoming three-match ODI series versus Bangladesh in their own backyard, has made a strong statement with this knock.

Needless to say, it will be a herculean task for Uttar Pradesh to get past this total and seal a spot in the semi-finals of the premier domestic tournament.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has done the unthinkable! India will take on New Zealand in the second of the three-match ODI series at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, November 27th. India is trailing 0-1 against New Zealand having lost the first match in Auckland by seven wickets. A career-best 145* from Tom Latham and an unbeaten 94 from Kane Williamson helped the Kiwis chase down 307 inside 50 overs.

Batting first India started off well with Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer hitting half-centuries. Handy contributions from Sanju Samson and Washington Sundar later ensured India reach a par total. That, however, didn’t prove good enough despite India playing two debutants - Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh. While the 23-year-old Arshdeep went wicketless in India’s lackluster show on Friday, Malik picked up two wickets in Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell.

While New Zealand is unlikely to alter with their winning XI, Hardik could be tempted to bring in an extra pacer on this batting-friendly Hamilton track. If this happens, it would be interesting to see who sits out. Overall, not many changes are expected in the playing XI from both teams.

India Vs New Zealand 2nd ODI: Live Cricket Streaming-OTT and Broadcast TV Channel, weather update and line-ups

India locked horns with hosts New Zealand in the three T20Is after the T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya & Co. rode on good performances from their bowling unit and Suryakumar Yadav's batting heroics to win the rain-affected series 1-0 and the Men in Blue will now face the Black Caps in the three-match ODI series opener on Friday (November 25). With the next ICC event to take place in India, in the form of 2023 ODI World Cup, the preparations for the mega event have kicked off right away and Shikhar Dhawan & Co. will be eager to make a mark. Beating NZ in their own backyard isn't a cakewalk by any means, hence, India will have their task cut-out who are without their regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, etc.

The onus will be on the likes of Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Deepak Chahar, Rishabh Pant, etc. from the second-stringed Indian team. The competition will be among the batters auditioning for the middle-order positions to make an impression amid the absence of Rohit & Co. It will be interesting to see if India goes ahead with two wrist spinners on a small ground, in Auckland, or prefer to strengthen their batting line-up with Hooda and Washington Sundar as their spin bowling options.

Ahead of the series opener, stand-in captain Dhawan said, "We guys have been performing well for a period of time. At the same time, talking about myself, I have to keep performing. I know till the time I perform, it would be good for me. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me hungry." Will India begin on a winning note or Kiwis will get off the mark in the home series? Only time will tell...

India Vs New Zealand 1st ODI Match live cricket streaming-OTT & TV broadcast channel: Where to watch online?

India’s newest young pace bowling sensation Umran Malik made his ODI debut on Friday against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland, returning with the figures of 2-66 in ten overs. Although he did go for a few runs in India’s seven-wicket loss, Umran still seemed to have impressed everyone with his raw pace and wicket-taking ability. One of them is a former India pacer, Ajit Agarkar.

While speaking on the post-match discussion on Prime Video, Agarkar praised Umran saying there are many bowlers in India who can bowl good line and length but there aren’t many who can do that with a 150 km/ph delivery, and that is where he (Umran Malik) comes into the picture. Agarkar said bowling at that speed is no less than a special ability, and that Malik needs to be nurtured well so that he gets the confidence to do well consistently at this stage.

"There are lots of bowlers who bowl line and length, there are very few who can get it up to 150 and that's a special ability to have. So you have got to nurture it and you have got to give him that confidence," Agarkar said.

Agarkar was also of the opinion that despite going a tad expensive on his debut, Malik still had an excellent day.

"When someone is as raw as he is, I think he had a brilliant day. He gave India the control; he gave India the wickets which kept India in the game. I know Shreyas (Iyer) said that they thought they were above par but with the dimensions of this ground and if there is a set batter, it becomes very difficult to stop."

During the first ODI, Malik picked up two wickets of opener Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell, while Agarkar reckons with those scalps, he brought India back into the game.

"He gave India the wickets that they needed - Conway and then Mitchell. So he got India back in the game, bowled exceptionally well. We don't expect a young bowler, who is a tearaway, to come and bowl every ball on the right line and lengths. That is what gives them the X-factor."

NZ vs IND - ‘Umran Malik has a special ability to...’ Ajit Agarkar lauds Jammu speedster on ODI debut

After the three T20Is, the action moved to the three-match ODI series between India and hosts New Zealand. In the ODI series opener, held at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday (November 25), the Black Caps rode on a splendid 145 not out from Tom Latham and captain Kane Williamson's steady 94 not out to chase down India's 306/7 and take a 1-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Williamson & Co. had to struggle to get past Shikhar Dhawan-Shubman Gill. The opening pair added an impressive 124-run first-wicket stand before Lockie Ferguson removed Gill for 50 whereas stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan fell for a 77-ball 72 off Tim Southee. Shreyas Iyer then stitched a vital wicket with Sanju Samson (a run-a-ball 36) after Ferguson removed Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav by bowling some hard lengths on a small ground. Iyer-Samson's 94-run fifth-wicket partnership took India closer to the 300-run mark before Washington Sundar's rapid cameo (16-ball 37*) took India to 306/7. Iyer top-scored with a calculative 76-ball 80.

In the run-chase, NZ started well before Finn Allen, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell fell to leave hosts reeling at 88 for 3. Umran Malik, debuting in the format, impressed in his early overs before Latham took on every Indian bowler. India went with only five bowlers and paid the price after Latham-Willianson's partnership stretched further.

While the NZ skipper played a composed knock, Latham smashed Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal as the Kiwis chased down a par-score in Auckland. The duo stitched a record 221-run fourth-wicket stand to go past the finish line.

Tom Latham's 145*, Kane Williamson's 94* help NZ beat India by seven wickets to win 1st ODI

After winning the three T20Is 1-0, India will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in the first of the three-match ODI series on Friday (November 25). Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the side whereas Rishabh Pant will continue to don the deputy's hat, as he did in the T20Is with Hardik Pandya leading, as India will kick off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations. Ahead of the series, a lot has been said and written about Pant, who hasn't impressed in the T20Is after limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Thus, former Indian all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi has made a big claim. The ex-cricketer feels Pant has been given a lot of opportunities in the limited-overs format but he is yet to deliver. While he did slam his maiden ODI hundred in the series win over hosts England in mid-July this year, he continues to remain unimpressive in the shortest format. In the NZ T20Is, he was given an opportunity to open the innings where he returned with 11 and 13, from five balls respectively. Hence, Sodhi feels it is time to try someone like Sanju Samson, who warmed the bench in the T20I series, as Pant has become a 'liability'.

"He (Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments," Sodhi was quoted as saying by India News. "When you give too many chances, problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys." "Only time will tell how many opportunities and how long he gets. Time is passing and he really has to tighten his shoes. Everything has a limit. You cannot depend on one player for so long. If he is not performing, you got to show him the exit door," Sodhi added.

As per Sodhi, Pant remains a match-winner, but hasn't lived up to his tag and, hence, the selectors should take a call and look beyond him "We all know Rishabh Pant is a match-winner, but you don’t score runs. You don’t help your team win. You got the opportunity in an important event like the World Cup. I accept that initially he didn’t get the opportunity, but whenever you get a chance, your job is to perform, which has not happened. It’s time that selectors think beyond him." he concluded.

The third and final T20I between India and New Zealand ended in a tie after both sides ended with the same runs at DLS par score on Tuesday evening (November 22). This became only the third instance of a T20I being tied on DLS par score as Hardik Pandya & Co. were adjudged the winners of the bilateral series with a 1-0 scoreline. While the series opener was washed out entirely, India had beaten the Kiwis by 65 runs in the second and penultimate match.

Talking about the final T20I, in Napier, Tim Southee-led Kiwis opted to bat first. While Arshdeep Singh removed Finn Allen and Md Siraj dismissed Mark Chapman, Devon Conway's 59 and Glenn Phillips' 54 revived the NZ innings and they were set to get anything over 180. The last five overs saw the home side add only 31 runs and lose eight wickets as they were dismissed for a moderate 160 in 19.3 overs.

From India's perspective, Md Siraj was impressive with his hard lengths whereas Arshdeep also complemented him as the duo shared four scalps each and bundled the Kiwis for a par score. In reply, India lost their power hitters Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant in a flash. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a golden duck whereas in-form Suryakumar Yadav departed for a 10-ball 13.

Hardik's 18-ball 30 not out ensured India managed to reach the DLS par score at the time of rain interruption in Napier, with India 75-4 in nine overs. The match was evenly poised but rain had the final say as it ended in a tie with the visitors winning the series 1-0.

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Siraj, who returned with his best T20I figures (4 for 17), said, "The wicket wasn't easy to bat and I was prepared to bowl hard lengths which gave me the rewards. I prepared myself to bowl hard lengths and had so much practice during World Cup and I just executed my plans. I always keep it simple. Just bowl the hard lengths. The weather is not in our hands, happy with the series win."

A lot transpired in India's senior men's cricket team post their disappointing campign in the 2021 T20 World Cup. While Ravi Shastri-led support staff resigned, Virat Kohli had already announced the decision to step aside from T20I captaincy post the World Cup. However, Kohli was then sacked as ODI captain by the BCCI, in early December, before he also resigned from the top post in Tests.

Thus, the baton was passed to Rohit Sharma as he slowly took over as the full-time captain in early 2022. While Rohit and Rahul Dravid, Shastri's successor, revamped the team and changed India's playing style, being more aggressive with the bat, India went into the T20 World Cup 2022 edition as the No. 1 ranked side and one of the top contenders.

India topped their group in the Super 12 round, however, they bowed out in the semi-finals with a heavy ten-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual winners England. After India's T20 WC campaign, in Australia, former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has taken a jibe at BCCI for sacking Kohli as captain and made a big claim.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Butt opined, "When they had sacked Kohli, there was no valid reason for that. The reason was that he did not win an ICC trophy. How many captains have actually won the ICC trophy? Many have spent their entire career without it. Ab jeet liye? (Have they won it now)? He was a quality captain. He wasn't the only reason why the team had lost. It is not that the team has drastically improved now. If it was all about winning then it's not that Dhoni can't play in the T20s."

Butt further added, "The format itself is so fickle and World Cups are happening so frequently and then you have various leagues going on in between. And above that if you have someone who is fit, ready to go and can lead you tactically then why not? Grooming can happen in bigger formats as well. But again it's all about their mindset."

Currently, Rohit and many regulars such as Kohli, KL Rahul, etc. aren't part of India's white-ball tour of New Zealand post the T20 WC. Hardik Pandya is leading the Men in Blue in the three T20Is versus NZ and many reports suggest that BCCI is looking at him as the next T20I skipper, succeeding the 35-year-old Rohit keeping in view the 2024 T20 WC.

'Have they won it now?' - Former Pakistan skipper slams BCCI for sacking Virat Kohli as captain after T20 WC

Virat Kohli hailed Team India star Suryakumar Yadav as the best T20 batter in the world after his stunning century in the second T20I against New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday (November 20). Suryakumar notched up a brilliant knock of unbeaten 111 runs off just 51 balls to power India to a thumping 65-run win.

Suryakumar, who has been in sublime form in the shortest format this year, continued his purple patch with the willow after an eventful campaign for India in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022. The right-hander went all guns blazing against the Kiwis after coming out to bat at no.3 in the 2nd T20I.

Kohli, who is not part of the ongoing three-match T20I series between India and New Zealand, took to Twitter to laud Suryakumar after his second T20I ton. The senior India batter said he didn't watch his innings but was certain it would have been another 'video game innings' referring to Suryakumar's incredible range of strokes.

"Numero Uno showing why he's the best in the world. Didn't watch it live but I'm sure this was another video game innings by him," Kohli wrote on Twitter.

Asked to bat first, India sent out Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan to open the innings. However, the move didn't work out as Pant was dismissed cheaply on just 6 off 13 balls. Kishan departed after adding 33 runs for the second wicket with Suryakumar before the right-hander took control of India's innings.

India kept losing wickets at the other end but there was no stopping Suryakumar, who looked in destructive touch as he took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners. He added 39 runs for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer (13) before posting another 82-run stand with Hardik Pandya (13) to propel India to a big score.

India on Sunday registered their biggest win in T20Is on New Zealand soil, beating hosts by 65 runs in the second T20I at the Bay Oval. Courtesy of an unbeaten and highly impressive 111 from Suryakumar Yadav and four wickets to all-rounder Deepak Hooda, India emerged victorious in the 2nd of the 3-match T20I series.

After the first game getting washed out due to rain, all eyes were on the second T20I. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Kiwis leaked a few runs in beginning but didn’t allow Rishabh Pant to settle, who was made to open today in absence of star openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Although some handy contributions from Ishan Kishan were coming in, it was Surkyakumar Yadav who owned the Blackcaps' bowlers.

For New Zealand, the only talking point was Tim Southee’s hat trick that included wickets of Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and Washington Sundar.

While chasing, the Kiwis lost young Finn Allen on a duck to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson did resume the rescue work but couldn’t take things far. It was about time before Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with a couple of wickets. Though Kane did hold onto one end and kept the scorecard ticking, Deepak Hooda on the other hand ran through their batting order with the career-best figures of 2.5-0-4-10 in T20Is.

An all-round show by this young Indian team saw them winning the second T20I by 65 runs and taking a one-nil lead in the three-match series.

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has hit out at the recently-sacked Chetan Sharma-led Indian selection committee for ruining Virat Kohli’s successive run as the Indian captain across formats. Kaneria feels the selection committee didn’t handle Kohli’s tenure as a captain well and that making him play selective matches while he was struggling to score runs, further added salt to injury.

While talking on his YouTube channel, Danish said, "The selection committee tried to ruin Virat Kohli's career. They didn't select him consistently when he was struggling with form, making him play selective cricket. He was unceremoniously removed as the captain."

He further went on to say that Kohli’s sacking as a captain across formats involved a lot of lies as Virat himself mentioned before that he never had any discussions with anyone regarding his removal as a skipper.

Meanwhile, BCCI on Friday, November 18th, in a shocking announcement, sacked the Chetan-Sharma-led selection committee after India’s embarrassing exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia. The Men in Blue lost the semifinal match against England by 10 wickets.

Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team started off well, winning their opening match against arch-rivals Pakistan by four wickets. With the win over the Netherlands in the following match, India looked upbeat about their aim of winning their second T20 World Cup. However, a loss at the hands of South Africa in their next match in Perth broke their winning run. Afterward, two big wins over Bangladesh and Zimbabwe meant India stood first in their group.

Now in the semis, India faced a stern challenge against England and had their backs against the walls from the beginning itself. Losing the all-important semis clash and that too by a margin of 10 wickets did dent India’s confidence. This left not only the fans but also the players utterly shattered.

Speaking on his YouTube channel post the world cup loss, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin said, "Everyone would have felt bad seeing team India not win the tournament or reach the final. I agree; it would have been shattering. I don't think any excuse will make you forget it. Definitely, it is a disappointing moment. But we all have to move on."

However, Ashwin was clear of the opinion that just one loss cannot define India’s World Cup campaign as ‘disappointing’, and instead, he said reaching the semis was an achievement in itself.

"We can't call it a disappointing campaign. We lost in the semi-finals. Reaching the semi-finals and finals can be considered an achievement. But from an Indian fan's point of view and the expectations they have of this team, I totally understand the fans' disappointment."

"But we players are at least 200-300 times more disappointed than what you all went through."

New Zealand after winning the toss elected to bowl first. Rishabh Pant got a chance to open the innings while Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar returned to the XI as well.

Pant failed to leave an impact, getting out to Ferguson on a 13-ball 6 whereas Ishan looked in good touch and was on 28 off 22 balls hitting four fours and a six before rain again halted the proceedings.

Senior India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has urged the Indian team management to let Rishabh Pant open in T20Is. Pant found himself below Karthi in the pecking order in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 where he managed to play only two matches after warming the bench for the most part of the tournament.

Pant was touted as one of the future stars of Indian cricket when he first broke into the scene. His ability to take down any bowler on his day and his aggressive brand of cricket saw Pant being touted as India's first-choice keeper across all three formats.

While he has managed to prove his credentials in Test cricket with some heroic knocks for India, Pant's form in T20Is has been far from good. Despite possessing the natural ability to strike the ball well, Pant has struggled to play his game in the shortest format at the international level.

The lack of clarity when it comes to his role in the T20 team has also not helped Pant's cause when playing for India. He has not managed to nail down a spot in India's batting line-up and as a result, has been in and out of the T20 team over the last year. While he has been used majorly in the middle order by India, Karthik believes Pant can do wonders at the top.

"We know one thing for sure, Rishabh Pant's ability to play shots. And when the field is up, he can go gung-ho in the powerplay so we can give him the opportunity to open. Interestingly, stats also reflect that his strike rate is highest when he opens. He likes the field up, he likes to take on bowlers and put them under pressure," Karthik told Cricbuzz.

"I think it will be very interesting to see where they bat Rishabh Pant. Big question for Team India is how they will be using Rishabh Pant and I think we will be seeing him at the top of the order and trying to give him enough balls to showcase his skills. He is second to none when it comes to stroke play and has baffled a lot of international bowlers of high pedigree. We need to embrace the fact that there will be a few failures from him, but when he gets going, he is a terrific player to watch," he added.

Karthik was nowhere in the reckoning for a spot in India's squad for T20 World Cup 2022 a few months back. However, he made a strong comeback with a stellar campaign in IPL 2022 followed by some match-winning cameos as a finisher for India. His heroics saw him pip Pant to be India's first-choice keeper for the T20 World Cup.

However, Karthik failed to justify the faith shown in him and couldn't deliver with the bat. While he is unlikely to remain in the scheme of things in T20Is for India, the 37-year-old wants India to give Pant time in the shortest format and figure out his role in the team.

"I think Rishabh Pant has sealed his spot in Test cricket and to a large extent in ODI cricket as well. In T20s, he bats in a different position for his franchise and comes in a different spot in the Indian team and they are trying to figure out where to fit him," Karthik explained.

Hardik Pandya has emerged as the favourite to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team in T20Is after the Men in Blue's disappointing show in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022. India crashed out of the tournament after suffering a humiliating ten-wicket defeat in the semi-final against England.

Rohit Sharma & Co. once again failed to cross the final hurdle in a major ICC tournament, extending their trophy drought. Ever since the team's exit, questions have been raised on the future of some of the senior players with Rohit's captaincy also coming under the scanner.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already sacked the entire selection panel led by former India cricketer Chetan Sharma, Rohit is also reportedly set to face the axe in T20Is. As per reports, BCCI is keen on appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain of India's T20I team keeping the future in mind.

While many have backed Pandya to lead the Indian team in the shortest format, former Pakistan team captain Salman Butt is far from convinced of his leadership qualities. While he rates Pandya highly, Butt believes Rohit wouldn't have been questioned had he scored some runs with the bat in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup in Australia.

"I don't know who is seeing him as captain and who is watching such dreams. He has talent and has tasted success in the IPL. But even Rohit Sharma has been successful five to six times in the IPL. If he had scored well in a couple of matches (in the T20 World Cup 2022), people wouldn't have been talking about making this change at the top," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"In the Asian subcontinent, people start talking about such drastic and big changes rather soon. Not all of them, but quite a few, who probably don't understand how these things work. Sometimes, just for the sake of giving an opinion, people say, 'change the captain'," he added.

Pandya has been in sublime form for India ever since he made his comeback after a long layoff due to his recovery earier this year. He led his team Gujarat Titans to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their debut season before making a strong return for India.

He has since performed exceptionally well for the team with both the bat and the ball and is set to lead India for the second time this year in T20Is in the absence of the senior players during their ongoing tour of New Zealand. However, Butt believes sacking Rohit on the basis of just one tournament will not be the right decision.

"Only one captain has won the World Cup, the rest of the teams have lost. Will you change the captains of all 11 teams because they lost the World Cup," said the former Pakistan captain.

Don't know who is seeing Hardik Pandya as captain: Ex-Pakistan skipper urges India to not sack Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma-led India bowed out of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition with an ignoble 10-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual champions England in the semi-finals. After India's crushing loss, many former cricketers shared their opinions on India's overall run in the mega event and now Mohammed Kaif has joined the bandwagon. In a recent interaction, Kaif mentioned a star player's name who he says should have been a part of the Indian squad but wasn't given a chance despite being ready for the big-ticket tournament.

Speaking about Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, Kaif feels India missed a trick by not picking the swashbuckling keeper-batter despite his good run of form in the India-South Africa ODIs, just before the T20 WC in Australia. "Speaking of the future, I think one player was ready but was still not picked for the World Cup. Sanju Samson was ready for the No. 5 position. He has been playing in the IPL for many years and has been leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR) as well. He guided them to the finals too this year," he told SportsKeeda.

At present, Samson-starrer India's T20I squad is in New Zealand for the three-match series versus the Kane Williamson-led Black Caps. The series opener was washed out due to persistent rain on Friday (November 18) in Wellington and the Men in Blue will now be in action on Sunday (November 20). In the absence of regulars such as Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, etc., Hardik Pandya-led India will look to challenge the Kiwis in their own backyard and give chances to youngsters.

The BCCI on Friday sacked the four-member senior national selection committee led by Chetan Sharma after the Indian cricket team failed to reach the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

During Chetan's tenure, India had also failed to reach the knock-out stage in the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup and lost the World Test Championships final.

T20 World Cup fallout: BCCI sacks entire Chetan Sharma-led selection committee

India's Twenty20 series opener against New Zealand was washed out on Friday without a ball being bowled, following steady rain in Wellington. The beaten semi-finalists of this year's T20 World Cup were hoping to find out more about some of their new talents in the first T20 International of the three-match series. India have rested regular skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow top-order batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul with all-rounder Hardik Pandya leading the side.

New Zealand vs India: Rain washes out first T20I in Wellington

India is gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus New Zealand, starting on November 18. In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya is set to captain India in the T20I series. While Rohit will return for the Bangladesh tour, former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Hitman can continue to lead in Tests and ODIs whereas the national side can have a separate T20I captain given the amount of cricket being played in a calendar year.

During a select media call organised by Prime Video, Shastri opined, "For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such that for one player, to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy. If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it."

The ex-India coach also questioned head coach Rahul Dravid for his constant breaks. In a presser ahead of the T20I series between India and the Black Caps, he said, "I do not believe in breaks. You get your 2-3 months of the IPL, that's enough for you to rest as a coach. But other times, I think a coach should be hands on, whoever he is."

In Dravid's absence, VVS Laxman is donning the head coach's hat for India's tour of NZ, featuring three T20Is and ODIs each. Here's India's squad for the NZ tour:

Squad for NZ T20Is: Hardik Pandya (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & wk), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson (wk), W Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Mohd. Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik.

'No harm in...' - Former head coach Ravi Shastri wants India to have a separate T20I skipper

Rahul Dravid has been rested for India's upcoming tour of New Zealand. Dravid was given some rest by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the end of India's T20 World Cup campaign in Australia. Under Dravid, Rohit Sharma-led India topped their group in the Super 12 round but bowed out of the competition with a heavy ten-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals.

After the series, BCCI was quick to give a break to Dravid whereas many regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, etc. have also been rested for the white-ball tour of NZ, which gets underway on Friday (November 18) in Wellington. Similarly this year, VVS Laxman filled in for Dravid during Hardik Pandya-led India's two T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, and the three-match ODI series versus hosts Zimbabwe in August. 'What do you need that many breaks for' - Shastri not in favour of Dravid being granted frequent rests

India is set to take on New Zealand in the first of the three-match T20I series, in Wellington, on Friday (November 18). After the dismal end to their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, in Australia, the Men in Blue will start a new cycle, keeping the next edition of the T20 WC in mind, with plenty of youngsters in focus. In the absence of many regular players such as captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, etc., the focus will be on stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, his deputy Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and the likes.

Ahead of the series opener, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has chosen a new batting slot for keeper-batter Pant. Many former cricketers believe Pant can be most effective if he bats higher up in the order. Jaffer has also backed the swashbuckling left-hander to open the innings in a series where India are without their key players. "The best place for Pant to bat is at the top of the order,” Jaffer was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo. “When fielders are up and Pant gets going at the start of the innings, he becomes a dangerous player like he bats in Tests and ODIs. Once he gets a start of 20-30, then he is dangerous. I don’t think fielders outside doesn’t matter to him,” the veteran further stated.

“When he comes in at No.5, the pressure is on him and it’s difficult for him to hit sixes. Pant is the kind of player you want to give India a blistering start,” Jaffer added.

Recently, Robin Uthappa -- part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious 2007 T20 WC campaign -- also shared a similar opinion with regard to Pant's batting spot in the shortest format for Team India.

"The next World Cup is in two years' time. So, keeping the conditions there in mind, I feel Rishabh Pant should bat in the top 3," Uthappa told Sportskeeda in a recent interaction. "If you look at his IPL records, his best performances have come when he has opened or when he has batted at No. 3. So, you have to give him the opportunity to become a match-winner in that position," he further asserted.

Given India are eyeing a revamp in their playing style in T20Is, it might be possible that the team management can promote Pant as an opener.

NZ vs IND: When and where to watch New Zealand vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

India's stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya said the team doesn't need to prove anything to anyone while responding to Michael Vaughan's criticism of the Men in Blue. The former England captain labelled India as the most underperforming team in white-ball cricket after their disappointing loss against England in the semi-final of the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022.

India were the table-toppers in Group 2 in the Super 12 stage being the only team to have won four out of their five matches but failed to cross the final hurdle in the semi-finals. Rohit Sharma & Co. suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat in the semi-final against England where they failed to defend a total of 178 runs.

In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan criticised India's approach in white-ball cricket and said the talent their performances on the pitch don't justify the kind of talent they have at their disposal. The former England captain urged India to take inspiration from England's white-ball template while calling them the biggest underperformers.

"India are the most underperforming white-ball team in history. I am just staggered by how they play T20 cricket for the talent they have. They have the players, but just do not have the right process in place. They have to go for it. Why do they give the opposition bowlers the first five overs to bed in," Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

Hardik was recently asked about Vaughan's comments during the pre-match press conference ahead of the start of the T20I series between India and New Zealand. The stand-in skipper said the team is aware that there is room for improvement but they don't need to prove anything to anyone.

"Obviously when you don't do well, people will have their opinion, which we respect. I understand people have different points of view. Being at the international level, I don't think we need to prove anything to anyone. It's a sport, you keep trying to get better and eventually when the result is supposed to happen it will happen. There are things we need to work on, going forward we will rectify and work on them," Hardik said reacting to Vaughan's comments.

Hardik, who led his team Gujarat Titans to their maiden title in their debut campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 earlier this year, has been touted by many as the future captain of India in T20Is. Don't need to prove anything: Hardik Pandya responds to Michael Vaughan's criticism of Team India

After the disappointments of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, Team India is now gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus hosts New Zealand. With many regulars not being part of the tour, Hardik Pandya will lead the side with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

With a semi-final defeat in the recently-concluded T20 WC, in Australia, India will now look to revamp and restart with the next edition of the World Cup to be held in 2024. The NZ series can give a sneak peak into the mindset of the team. With regular skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and others not part of the tour, the young batters are expected to take more responsibility and get more chances at the top order. Amid all this, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has suggested a new batting slot for Pant.

"The next World Cup is in two years' time. So, keeping the conditions there in mind, I feel Rishabh Pant should bat in the top 3," he told Sportskeeda. "If you look at his IPL records, his best performances have come when he has opened or when he has batted at No. 3. Pant featured in only two games for India in the T20 WC 2022 edition. So far, the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't done anything extra ordinary in the shortest format and will hope to get going from the opening match itself versus the Kiwis. 3. So, you have to give him the opportunity to become a match-winner in that position," he further opined. 'His best performances have...' - Ex-India batter suggests batting spot for Rishabh Pant ahead of NZ T20Is

MS Dhoni is reportedly set to be offered another major role in Team India's backroom staff by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2024. The former India captain had earlier served as the mentor of the Indian team during the T20 World Cup last year.

The most successful captain in the history of Indian cricket, Dhoni had a trophy-laden stint as a player. He led India to numerous memorable victories as captain both at home and overseas and remains the only skipper to have won all three major ICC limited-overs trophies - T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, and the Champions Trophy.

Dhoni, who last played for India in 2019, announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, he continues to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is expected to bring curtain downs on his IPL career after the 2023 season next year.

As per reports, Dhoni will be involved with the Indian cricket team once again in some sort of a role after retiring from IPL next year. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt shared his views on Dhoni's potential return to the Indian setup after the reports emerged recently.

Butt believes Indian cricket can benefit from having Dhoni in the coaching setup as he is someone with a lot of experience behind his back and is a proven winner as a leader. Butt also lauded Dhoni's tactical acumen and urged BCCI to use his brain in taking Indian cricket forward.

"Indian cricket will benefit significantly from MS Dhoni's involvement and presence. Because of the type of captain he has been, he would be a big asset when it comes to designing tactical plans for the team," Butt said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

"With his kind of a brain, players will be benefitted. Indian cricket will move ahead. You can't beat experience, you can't beat the person who has done things himself," he added.
