Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 29), ended the calendar year without any international century. For the unversed, it became his second successive year with no ton at the highest level. The 33-year-old's last ton came in late 2019, with a century in India's first-ever day-night Test (versus Bangladesh at home).

As Kohli's century-drought continues, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Little Master Sunil Gavaskar opined on the Test captain's dismissal during the national side's second innings of the Centurion Test. While Kohli chased a wide delivery to fall for 35 in the first essay, his departure in the second innings was in a largely similar fashion (out for 18). Thus, Gavaskar opened up on his dismissal on Day 4 of the series opener.

During commentary on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "You've got to say that was a loose shot, first ball after lunch. Every batsman, when he resumes, gives himself a little time, particularly in Test cricket - gives himself a little time to get his feet moving."

"Any interval, even if it's a short four-minute drinks interval, after that you've still got to reset your batting. Kohli is such an experienced batsman but maybe at the back of his mind, he is looking to get quick runs, so that the declaration can be done," added the legendary Indian cricketer.

In Kohli's defence, he may have had the mindset to score some quick runs as India were looking to set up a competitive target for Dean Elgar-led South Africa in the Centurion Test. With weather forecast suggesting rain interference on Day 5, hence, India looked to attack more in their second essay -- after gaining a 130-run first-innings lead -- to fold for 174.

Centurion Test: Gavaskar opines on Virat Kohli's dismissal as Indian batter ends 2021 without a century

Virat Kohli ended the year 2021 with the bat, on Wednesday (December 29), without scoring any international century. The right-hander's dry spell has continued for another year as it became the second successive calendar year where he ended without a triple-figure knock.

After falling for 35 in the first innings of India's first Test versus South Africa, at SuperSpork Park, Centurion, Kohli came out to bat with a positive intent in the side's second essay, after their 130-run first-innings lead. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old fell for, in a similar fashion by chasing a delivery outside off-stump. Thus, batting coach Vikram Rathour has opened up on Kohli's knack of throwing his wicket by playing the deliveries on outside-off lines.

"This shot brings him a lot of runs. So he has to play the shot. When to play the shot, under what situations, we need to have discussions,” Rathour said in the press conference after the 4th day's play in Centurion on Wednesday.

Rathour also addressed India's senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's poor returns with the bat. "Pujara in past has played some important innings for us, you see these are challenging conditions, not many people have scored runs here. We need to be patient as long as they are trying their best, giving their best as a coaching unit we are fine. Are we getting impatient? Not at this stage, I think,” he said.

He has to play the shot: Vikram Rathour sheds light on Virat Kohli's outside-off struggles

Jasprit Bumrah is surely a national treasure. The ace Indian speedster made his international debut in 2016 and has come a long way ever since. On Day 4 of the Centurion Test between India and South Africa, Bumrah accounted for two wickets in the evening session, with the Proteas in pursuit of 305, to achieve 100 Test wickets in overseas conditions.

Bumrah clean bowled Rassie van der Dussen and nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj to attain the historic feat, in only his 25th match in whites. With this, the 28-year-old pacer also scripted a unique feat. The wily pacer has set the record of being the bowler with the fewest number of overall wickets while reaching 100 scalps away from home. His current tally is 106 wickets, including Dean Elgar's wicket on Day 5 of the ongoing first Test at Centurion.

Fewest Test wickets overall to reach 100-Test scalp away from home:

Jasprit Bumrah - 106*
Mohammad Amir - 118
Michael Holding - 136
Zaheer Khan - 137
Mohammed Shami - 140
Andy Roberts - 140

Note: Bumrah has played only two Tests at home out of his 25 appearances in whites (including the Centurion Test).

Hence, Bumrah leads the list by miles. For the unversed, three Indians feature in the top five overall, with Mohammed Shami and Zaheer Khan also accompanying Bumrah. It is interesting to note that not even a single spinner appears in the list.

Bumrah has been Virat Kohli's go-to-bowlers especially in overseas Tests. He was India's leading wicket-taker in the 2021 England Tests, in the United Kingdom, and also a part of the national side's memorable Test series wins in Australia in recent times.

The young pacer will hope to continue picking up regular wickets in South Africa as Kohli-led Indian team are eyeing their first-ever series win in the African nation during the ongoing 2021/22 tour.

India vs SA, 1st Test: Will rain play spoilsport and dent Virat Kohli & Co.'s victory chances on Day 5?

South Africa captain Dean Elgar scored an unbeaten 52 against India as the hosts showed a dogged determination to stay in the fight on a spicy wicket and closed the fourth day on 94 for four in the first test at Centurion Park on Wednesday.

South Africa are still 211 runs off their record victory target at the venue of 305 on a wicket that is treacherous for the batsmen with sideways movement, but also variable bounce.

Some deliveries are staying low and others spitting off the surface with exaggerated bounce.

They will need to negotiate the skilful India attack on the final day as the tourists attempt to secure a victory on the way to a hoped for first ever series win in South Africa with tests in Johannesburg and Cape Town to follow.

South Africa lost Aiden Markram (one), Keegan Petersen (17), nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj (eight) and Rassie van der Dussen, who showed great patience for his 11 from 65 balls before he was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah (2-22) with a superb in-swinger while not offering a shot.

The highest fourth innings score to win at Centurion Park is 251 for eight by England in 2000, an infamous test where both teams agreed to forfeit an innings after rain to force a result.

The next best successful chase is 226 for four by South Africa against Pakistan in 1998.

India were earlier bowled out for 174 in their second innings, the South African seamers expertly using the conditions with Kagiso Rabada (4-42) and 21-year-old left-arm debutant Marco Jansen (4-55) the chief wicket takers.

None of the tourists’ batsmen were able to get settled at the crease with Rishabh Pant (34) the top scorer as he tried to take the attack to the bowlers.

7-0: A look at India's woeful Test record in South Africa

Indian captain Virat Kohli failed to bring an end to his century drought in 2021 as he was dismissed on a low-key score of 18 off 32 balls in India's second innings of the ongoing first Test against South Africa on Wednesday. Kohli looked disappointed in the dressing room as he watched the replays of his dismissal.

After scoring 35 runs in the first innings, Kohli was expected to notch up a big score in the second innings when he came out to bat at no.5 in the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. He looked composed in the middle and was looking in fine form before making a costly mistake against Marco Jansen.

In what was the exact replica of his dismissal against Lungi Ngidi in the first innings, Kohli once again went for a wider delivery and ended up getting caught at the slip after an edge. Jansen bowled one quite outside off post lunch and Kohli went after it.

It was a thick edge off his bat and South Africa keeper Quinton de Kock was quick to grab the catch as the Indian captain was dismissed on 18 off 32 balls. Kohli looked dejected as he walked back to the dressing room after getting dismissed. The 18-run-knock meant the Indian captain has now gone another year without a century across formats.

Virat Kohli ends 2021 without a century as Indian captain departs on 18 in Centurion Test vs South Africa

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami ran through the South Africa batting line-up in the onging first Test between the two sides in Centurion on Tuesday to reach the milestone of 200 Test wickets. Shami picked up a five-wicket haul in South Africa's first innings and finished with excellent figures of 5/44 in his 16 overs.

He became only the fifth Indian fast bowler to reach the milestone of 200 wickets in Tests having achieved the feat in 55 Test matches. Shami recalled his struggles and the hardships his family went through to make him the successful cricketer that he is today. Shami, who hails from a remote village in the Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, recalled how his father would cycle 30kms every day to take him to a coaching camp.

Shami has been one of the consistent performer for India across formats over the last few years and has been a prolific wicket-taker for the team. The right-arm fast bowler recalled how it was not easy for him to make it big in cricket and how his father played a massive role in his rise.

"My father has made me what I am today. I come from a village where there aren't many facilities and even today there aren't all facilities available. Even then, my father would cycle me 30 km to take me at coaching camp and that struggle I still remember. In those days and those situations, they invested in me and I am forever grateful," Shami said after reaching the milestone of 200 Test wickets on Tuesday.

"All you can do is work hard and if you work hard you are bound to get results," he added.

Rishabh Pant created history on Day 3 of the first Test between India and South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Tuesday (December 28). The 24-year-old youngster became the quickest Indian keeper to 100 Test dismissals, breaking his mentor and former Indian captain MS Dhoni's record (who achieved the feat during his 36th Test appearance).

For the unversed, Pant reached the milestone with the departure of SA's limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma (52) to become the fastest Indian keeper to 100 dismissals. He, thus, attained the feat in his 26th Test (50th innings). Proteas' Quinton de Kock leads the overall list, who reached the landmark during his 22nd Test match.

Pant has had a solid start to his Test career. Debuting during India's tour of England in 2018, the left-hander slammed a hundred in his debut series and already has a ton in Australia as well. In addition, his keeping skills have improved to a great extend.

Pant will aim to cross Dhoni's overall tally of 294 dismissals in whites (most by an Indian) by the time he ends his Test career. While he has plenty to achieve as of now, the youngster promises a lot more in future with his talent, learning abilities and overall skills.

Siraj got Van der Dussen caught at gully before pulling off Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'Siii' celebration. Siraj jumped in the air and did Ronaldo's celebration which caught the eyes of many on social media. Manchester United superstar Ronaldo has been doing the popular celebration since his Real Madrid days and it is quite popular among football fans across the globe. Ronaldo is often spotted doing the same celebration after scoring a goal for United. While Siraj's attempt at copying the football legend was not perfect, it did impress fans. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has hailed Virat Kohli for his never give up attitude and aggressive approach as a captain. Kohli is a livewire on the field and is known for wearing his heart on his sleeves. The Indian Test skipper never shies away from going after the opposition on the field and is not someone to back away from a fight when instigated.

Harbhajan believes it's Kohli's aggressive approach that makes him stand out as a player and has played a massive role in making him as successful as he is today. The former India spinner pointed out how the team has transformed under Kohli's leadership in Tests and it's not more about saving Test matches in countries like Australia but it is about going there and winning those games.

"It suits perfectly actually and we need players like him in the team to can take the team forward. When the team used to go to Australia, they used to think about how to save the Test match. In Virat's captaincy, team goes to Australia thinking how they can win the Test series," Harbhajan told India Today.

Harbhajan cited the example of Kohli's century in the Adelaide Test between India and Australia in 2014 where the Indian skipper wanted the team to go for the win or lose the game despite a draw being an ideal result. Kohli had told Harbhajan that he wanted his team to win overseas and a drawn game was of no importance to him.

"I remember in one of those series, where he had scored a lot of runs, although India had lost the Test series. India had to chase some 400 runs in that match and Kohli had scored a big century. So when he returned to the pavilion I told him that match could have ended in a draw, but he replied that 'there is no importance of a drawn Test, either you win or you lose and the day we learn to fight, we will learn to win and someday we will'," Harbhajan recalled.

Harbhajan also drew a comparison between former India captain MS Dhoni and Kohli, stating that the current Indian Test skipper would not have scored as many runs in his career had he been 'soft' like Dhoni. One of the greatest captains of all time, and the only Indian to win all three major ICC trophies as captain, Dhoni was known for his calm and collected approach on the field.

While Dhoni led India to three major ICC trophies and numerous other memorable series wins, Kohli has never won an ICC trophy as captain. However, Harbhajan suggested Kohli would not have scored as many runs if he was calm and composed like Dhoni.

"And that is the change you have noticed in this Indian side. They went to Australia and beat them twice, they played well in England and I hope they beat South Africa in this series. So Kohli has perfectly played his role as a leader. And the aggressive approach, that has made Virat Kohli the player he is today. Had he been soft like MS Dhoni, I don't think he would have scored these many runs," Harbhajan said.

Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt is very vocal on various aspects of the gentlemen's game and often shares his views on several platforms. After Day 1 of the Centurion Test ended between India and South Africa, on Sunday (December 26), the tainted Pakistani cricketer has called for senior Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara's omission from the Test line-up to make way for 'in-form' Mayank Agarwal once Rohit Sharma returns.

For the unversed, vice-captain Rohit Sharma isn't part of Virat Kohli-led India's three-match Test series versus Dean Elgar-led Proteas, in the rainbow nation, due to a hamstring injury. Mayank, on the other hand, had fallen behind in the pecking order due to Rohit, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill's presence but injury to Rohit and Gill made him the opener for the SA series.

Mayank cashed in the opportunity to score a free-flowing and attractive 123-ball 60 on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test between India and South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion. He stitched an impressive 117-run opening stand with centurion KL Rahul (122 not out) and helped India close the day at 272-3. Meanwhile, Pujara's struggles continued as he was dismissed for a golden duck, his second overall, and fourth duck in the calendar year. Pujara's last international ton came in early 2019, hence, his spot is under the scanner.

Ex-Pak skipper calls for senior batter's omission for 'in-form' Mayank Agarwal on Rohit's Test return

India started Day 1 of the Centurion Test, versus South Africa, with a bang. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Virat Kohli-led India were off to a flier courtesy openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. While Mayank fell for a well-made 60, Rahul continued from one end and took India to 272-3 at stumps on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test in the African nation.

As Rahul continued to score runs across formats, Kohli continued to remain away from his 71st international ton. His century-drought still didn't come to an end despite the 33-year-old Test captain making a good-looking 94-ball 35. Just when he was settled and looking good to stay unbeaten at stumps, the right-hander threw his wicket away by playing a loose shot off Lungi Ngidi.

Thus, Kohli's ardent fans continue to wait for the Indian skipper's 71st ton at the highest level. Former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra opined on the Indian star batter's dismissal and while he stated that the manner of his dismissal is a 'concern', Nehra was quick to predict that a masterclass innings from King Kohli isn't far away.

"You expect Kohli to play those 135-150 kmph deliveries on the front foot but when the ball starts moving and gets bounce too, any player would face difficulties. Rohit had suffered a hamstring injury while training in Mumbai and is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he is working on his recovery. However, as per Sports Today, India's limited-overs captain might not make it in time for the ODI series as he might take 4-6 weeks to recover fully from the hamstring injury.

Earlier, BCCI had said Rohit might return in three weeks time to lead the team in the ODI series against South Africa. However, as per Sports Today, he is unlikely to return and KL Rahul might lead the Indian team in the Hitman's absence. Rahul is India's designated vice-captain in both ODIs and T20Is.

Rahul has had a remarkable 2021 so far as he once again cemented his spot in the Test team and became a regular for the team in limited-overs. Rahul was elevated to vice-captaincy in T20Is after Kohli stepped down as the captain in the shortest format with Rohit taking over.

The stylish right-hander was later named the vice-captain in ODIs as well after Rohit replaced Kohli as the ODI skipper. Rahul was then named Kohli's deputy for the ongoing South Africa Test series in the absence of Rohit, who was the vice-captain of the series.

KL Rahul likely to lead India in ODI series vs South Africa if Rohit Sharma fails to recover in time - Report

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli had another disappointing outing in the team's first innings of the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Centurion. The two sides are currently locking horns in the Boxing Day Test which got underway from Sunday (December 26). Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India were off to a brilliant start in their first innings.

Openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal combined to post a 117-run stand for the first wicket to get India off to a flyer in the series-opener. While Agarwal was dismissed on 60, Rahul went on to slam an unbeaten 122 off 248 balls to help the visitors post 272/3 at stumps on Day 1.

Kohli, who came out to bat no.3, looked in decent touch as he played the South African pacers really well while also playing some stunning shots. However, he once again failed to convert his good start into a big score and ended up making a costly mistake against Lungi Ngidi. In the 69th over, Ngidi bowled one way outside off and Kohli ended up going after the ball.

He could have left the ball comfortably but edged one to Wiaan Mulder, who was standing at slips and took a comfortable catch. Kohli departed after scoring 35 runs off 94 balls and disappointment was quite evident on his face as he returned back to the dressing room after his innings was cut short.

Former India pacer Ashish Neha gave his take on Kohli's dismissal and said the Indian skipper must not be happy with the way he got dismissed. Nehra reckoned it was a great chance for the Indian skipper to score big and get close to ending his long-standing century drought in international cricket.

“You expect runs from someone like Kohli. He would be unhappy with his performance. But if you look at the stats, Kohli has scored runs in the previous away series in England conditions. He has the hunger to score hundreds and double hundreds and he would be a bit unhappy with himself today,” Nehra said on Cricbuzz.

Nehra feels Kohli's poor form of late is a bit concerning for the Indian team as the skipper has been throwing away his wickets more often than not. Nehra insisted Kohli should have left the delivery on which he was caught at slips against Ngidi during India's first innings.

“Looking at the way he’s been dismissed, it’s a bit of concern. South Africa bowlers made Kohli play a loose shot and this has been a problem lately. Kohli has been giving his wickets to bowlers. Looking at today’s dismissal, we understand how Kohli has been out facing swinging deliveries aimed around the fourth stump. In such cases, you need the batter to leave those deliveries.. we saw that from KL Rahul today,” said the former India pacer.

Indian batters couldn't continue their domination on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion as the play was called off without a ball being bowled due to heavy rain. India will resume their first innings from 272/3 on Day 3.

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli had another disappointing outing in the team's first innings of the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Centurion. The two sides are currently locking horns in the Boxing Day Test which got underway from Sunday (December 26).

Virat Kohli would be unhappy: Ashish Nehra on Indian skipper's dismissal in Boxing Day Test against SA

Day 2 of India-South Africa's first Test, in Centurion, was washed out without a ball being bowled. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India ended the first day's play at 272-3 with opener KL Rahul being unbeaten on 122. While the visitors would have wanted to extend their dominance, rain played spoilsport as the entire day's play was hampered due to relentless rain showers.

Thus, Virat Kohli-led Indian team will have to accelerate after the morning session on Day 3 and hope for their bowlers to produce the goods with the ball to claim 20 wickets in the remainder of the series opener. India have stuck to their 5-bowlers strategy, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, R Ashwin and Shardul Thakur.

Talking about Siraj, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra has lauded the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) -- whom he has seen grow from strength to strength in the recent past. Nehra lauded Siraj for being injury-free so far and hailed his hunger for success.

The 27-year-old Siraj has had staggering success in whites following his debut in the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia last year. The speedster has accounted for 33 scalps in 11 games, being one of the top-performers for the side in away series in Australia and England. Hence, Nehra had words of praise for him after rain played spoilsport on Day 2 of the Centurion Test.

He used to get upset when his name was not in the XI: Ashish Nehra heaps praise on young India pacer

On the second day of the first test between South Africa and India at Centurion Park on Monday, no play was possible due to heavy rain, frustrating both teams looking to take advantage in the three-match series.

What began as a drizzle this morning turned into a continuous downpour in the afternoon, and with 90 overs lost in the game, Virat Kohli's team, who were sitting well at 272 for 3 after day one, will now have to speed up the proceedings in the remaining three days if they are to win the match.

India vs South Africa: Second day of Centurion Test called off due to heavy rain

Virat Kohli-led India ended Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test versus South Africa, in Centurion, on top. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Kohli & Co. rode on opener KL Rahul's 122 not out and Mayank Agarwal's 60 to post 272-3 at stumps on the opening day.

Rahul and Mayank's 117-run opening stand set the tone for Team India. While India lost two wickets in a row, to be reduced to 117/2, Rahul was involved in valuable stands with Captain Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to close the day on a high for the visitors. Rahul's 7th ton also made him the second Indian opener to cross the three-figure mark in South Africa and become the first-ever opener from the country to have Test centuries in England, SA, Australia and West Indies.

In a video posted by BCCI on Twitter, Rahul reflected on his memorable performance on Day 1 and said, "It is truly special, every hundred really takes something out of you and gives you joy. There are so many emotions you go through when you score a hundred. You bat for 6-7 hours, those are the kind of innings that stand out and as players, we really cherish these."

"This is what is expected out of me. Once I got off to a good start, I started enjoying my batting and I did not think too far ahead," he added.

"Preparation has been really good, all the batters that batted on Day 1 were really focused. I just try to stay in the moment when I am out there in the middle. I have surprised myself with how calm I have been, my focus has always been to stay in the moment and react to the ball that is bowled. Really happy that I could finish the day on a good note," said Rahul.

Surprised myself with how calm I have been: KL Rahul reacts to his 'truly special' Centurion ton vs SA

Cheteshwar Pujara hasn't scored an international ton since early 2019. While the right-hander continues to be an integral part of India's Test line-up and has played some important knocks in the recent past, a three-figure knock continues to evade the red-ball specialist.

On Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa, in Centurion, Pujara came out to bat with India off to a fine start courtesy openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Coming out to bat with India 117/1 after winning the toss, Pujara was expected to take the scoreboard forward and bat throughout the day; tiring the bowlers. However, he fell for a golden duck.

Pujara tried to negate a Lungi Ngidi delivery but got an inside edge and was caught by the short-leg fielder as he walked back to the pavillion for a golden duck. Thus, the right-hander felt dejected as his run of form remains below his own standards. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came to his rescue and lifted his spirits in the dressing room.

During the third-wicket stand between Indian captain Virat Kohli and opener KL Rahul, Dravid went past Pujara and gave him a gentle pat on his back which brought a smile on the current No. 3 batter. Here's the video of the same shared on social media platform Twitter:

As the 33-year-old Kohli still remains away from his 71st international ton, he surpassed former Indian captain Mohammad Azhaurddin to top a unique list. Winning the toss at SuperSport Park, Centurion, Kohli achieved a huge milestone as he became the Indian captain with the most toss wins in Test cricket. India vs SA: Virat Kohli goes past Mohammad Azharuddin in unique list in Centurion Test opening day

Ajinkya Rahane has been enduring a lean patch in his Test career of late as he has failed to score runs consistently for Team India. Rahane even lost his position as the vice-captain of the Test team ahead of the team's ongoing tour of South Africa as he was replaced by limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma. The under-fire senior batter has been under immense pressure to perform and the ongoing Test series against South Africa might be his final shot at redemption.

Rahane came out to bat at no.5 for India in their first innings of the Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday (December 26). He managed to keep his recent struggles behind and looked composed against the Proteas pacers as the right-hander scored an unbeaten 40 off 81 balls and posted an unbeaten stand of 73 runs with centurion KL Rahul to help India post a strong 272/3 at stumps.

It was a fine display from the under-fire batter, who has been on the receiving end of intense criticism due to his batting failures of late. While he looked focused, Rahane was spotted constantly telling himself to watch the ball while batting out in the middle in Centurion on Sunday.

'Watch the ball' - Rahane was heard murmuring to himself while batting during India's first innings. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media and has intrigued cricket fans.

India are all set to take on South Africa in a three-match Test series starting from Sunday (December 26). The Test series will be followed by three ODIs between the two sides. India are yet to announce their squad for the ODIs and the selectors are likely to sit down to pick the squad for the series in the next 48 hours.

R Ashwin is likely to make his comeback in India's ODI squad for the South Africa series, as per a report in Cricbuzz. Ashwin, who has been a vital cog in India's Test squad, has been sidelined from white-ball cricket for a long time. He was surprisingly included in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 which marked his return to the T20 team after a gap of three years.

The off-spinner had last played an ODI match for India in June 2017 and will now be making his comeback in the ODI squad after a gap of over three years. As per Cricbuzz, the Indian think tank including head coach Rahul Dravid and white-ball captain Rohit Sharma have been left impressed by Ashwin's performances for India in T20Is recently and see him as part of their plans ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup which will be played in India.

Besides Ashwin, the selectors are also set to include youngsters Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad. Both Iyer and Gaikwad had brilliant IPL 2021 campaigns for their respective sides and have been making waves with their performances in the onging Vijay Hazare Trophy. While Gaikwad is the top-scorer with 603 runs from five matches, Iyer has 379 runs in six matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy so far.

Iyer is being seen as one of the back-ups for all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to work on his fitness before he returns to the Indian team. The selectors are also set to take a call on the future of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has not played for India since captaining the team on the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Gaikwad, Iyer in fray; R Ashwin likely to return in India's ODI squad for South Africa series - Report

Senior India batter Cheteshwar Pujara continued his lean patch in the ongoing first Test against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday (December 26). Pujara was dismissed on a golden duck in India's first innings as he went on to bag an unwanted record in the game.

Pujara came out to bat at no.3 for India after Lungi Ngidi broke the opening stand of 117 runs between KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The fast bowler trapped Agarwal lbw on 60 before getting Pujara caught on the next delivery. Pujara failed to open his account in the game and it was his ninth duck in the longest format.

Pujara now has the unwanted record for most ducks for India while batting at no.3 in Tests. The right-hander overtook Dilip Vengsarkar, who has eight ducks to his name while batting at no.3 for India in Tests.

Pujara's rough patch has put immense pressure on the senior batter to up the ante as his spot in the team is under threat. In the recently-concluded two-match Test series against New Zealand at home, Pujara had managed only 95 runs in four innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara creates unwanted record after golden duck in Boxing Day Test against South Africa

Many were left surprised as India decided to name struggling senior batter Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI for the first Test against South Africa that got underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday (December 26). It was not an easy call from the team management as Rahane has been undergoing a lean patch in the longest format for quite a while now.

India went with a total of five bowlers in the first Test as Shardul Thakur was picked as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Five bowlers meant, India had to do away with an extra batter in the playing XI as Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari both failed to make the cut for the series-opener.

Former Indian cricketers Aakash Chopra and Ajit Agarkar both were left unhappy with Rahane's selection over Iyer and Vihari as they questioned his spot in the playing XI. Chopra said it could be the last throw of dice from the Indian team management, hoping that Rahane could deliver and spark a turnaround for himself.

"Shreyas Iyer doesn't find a place in the spot and you've gone with Rahane, I think so it's the last throw of dice, hoping that it comes alright. If it doesn't, I think this is going to be a huge Test match for him," Chopra said on Star Sports.

Chopra also questioned India's decision to select five bowlers in the playing XI for the first Test, stating that South Africa's batting line-up isn't too strong at present and has not been setting the world on fire. Chopra said four bowlers would have been enough for India considering there is help for fast bowlers on the greenish track in Centurion.

“We have gone with five bowlers, personally I thought four were enough. I think if there is help in the surface for the faster bowlers, look at the opposition their batting is really not setting the world on fire four should be enough between three fast bowlers and Ashwin," said Chopra.

Agarkar also agreed with Chopra's views on India's playing XI and said Rahane should not have been picked over the likes of Iyer and Vihari. While Iyer recently made a fantastic debut in the two-match Test series against New Zealand at home, Vihari slammed three half-centuries for India A on their tour of South Africa.

"Rahane did miss the last Test India played in Mumbai due to a niggle so you can say he's back in because he is an experienced campaigner, has done well before in these conditions. But I'm with Aakash, I would have either picked Vihari or Shreyas Iyer," said Agarkar.

In the first Test against India at SuperSport Park, the South Africa players were seen wearing black armbands in memory of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who passed away at the age of 90 in Cape Town on Sunday morning.

Why is South Africa team wearing black armbands in first Test against India?

Virat Kohli-led India will take on South Africa in a three-match Test series with the first encounter getting underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion from Sunday (December 26). India will be aiming to script history by registering their first-ever Test series win in South Africa this time around as the visitors have never won a series in the longest format of the game, against the Proteas in their own backyard.

India are a stronger unit compared to Dean Elgar-led South Africa with a great mix of youth and experience in their squad. The likes of Mayank Agarwal, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have been in brilliant form in Tests while the bowlers have been delivering consistently for India. They have been backed by many to get the better of South Africa in the upcoming series.

While India will have their eyes set on the series, captain Kohli, who recently lost the ODI captaincy of the team to Rohit Sharma, will be looking to silence some of his critics with the bat. Kohli will also be chasing some personal milestones in the three-match rubber. Here is a look at four milestones he can achieve during the Test series against South Africa -

1) 71st century

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli will be hoping to bring an end to his century drought in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. He last scored a hundred in the day-night Test against Bangladesh in August 2019 and has since been chasing the triple-figure mark across formats. He currently has 70 centuries under his belt in international cricket and is just one short of joining Ricky Ponting at the second spot in the list of most centuries in international cricket. Ponting retired with a total of 71 hundreds in international cricket. Kohli can overtake him and go second if he manages to score two centuries in the South Africa Test series.

Here is a look at four milestones he can achieve during the Test series against South Africa - 1) 71st century Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli will be hoping to bring an end to his century drought in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. 2) 8000 runs in Tests Virat Kohli is on the cusp of becoming the sixth Indian batter to breach the 8000-run mark in Test cricket.
