Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes Virat Kohli's position could be up for grabs in the Indian Test tea if he fails to score runs in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. India will lock horns in the first Test against the Proteas at the SuperSport Park in Centurion starting from Sunday (December 26).

Kohli has been under fire ever since India's exit from the T20 World Cup 2021 where the Men in Blue failed to qualify for the semi-finals. While he stepped down as the T20I captain of the side post the T20 World Cup, Kohli was sacked as ODI captain earlier this month and replaced by Rohit Sharma.

Panesar pointed out Kohli will be under immense pressure to perform having been sacked from ODI captaincy. However, he insisted India winning the series will help Kohli's cause even if he fails to perform with the bat.

"I think he will be very motivated because he knows that if he does not score a lot of runs in Test cricket then that position could be up for grabs as well," Panesar told ANI.

"So, he is under pressure to perform but he needs to do well and actually get some wins and even India are winning and he does not score the runs that still is a positive for Virat Kohli because he knows how to get the best out of an individual," he added.

The former England spinner backed India to script history and win their maiden Test series in South Africa this time around. India have never managed to win a Test series against the Proteas in their own backyard and have so far clinched only three Test wins in the Rainbow nation.

"I think India have got a great chance. They seem like a favourite to win that series. They know how to win now away from India and that is to do with Ravi Shastri's coaching philosophy," said Panesar.

"He really instilled that belief, the motivation to say guys any situation we are going to fight and if you are in a dominant position then we are going to keep our foot on the throat.

"So, I think it is still there within this Indian team and this will be historic for Indian cricket for them to win their first series in South Africa and this is their best chance. They have got a stronger team. Their team is much stronger than the South Africans. I think India are firm favourites to win the series," he added.

Virat Kohli knows his position could be up for grabs if he doesn't score runs in South Africa: Monty Panesar

India coach Rahul Dravid has urged his players to seize the chance to claim a first ever test series win in South Africa, a moment that could be career defining for many in the team as they prepare for the first test in Pretoria on Sunday.

India have enjoyed recent success in Australia and England, but South Africa remains a mighty challenge for the top ranked test side, though they will arguably never have had a better chance against a home team going through a transition period and with far less experience than in the past.

"It is a great challenge and a great opportunity for everyone," Dravid told reporters on Saturday. "It is something you look forward to as a batsman, the chance to play away from home and test yourself against some really good opposition in their home conditions.

"A lot of your career is defined by those sorts of performances, so it is a great opportunity for everyone in the group to put in the performances that are something that they can remember, and people will remember them for."

Dravid played 11 tests in South Africa and averaged under 30, well below his career mark of 52.31, so he is aware of the challenges of adjusting from lower wickets on the sub-continent to the higher bounce of the Highveld.

He said there would be much to consider when selecting a starting XI, and expects those who do not make the cut to be disappointed, something he sees as a positive.

"Most players are professional. Sometimes you have to have difficult conversations. Everyone wants to be part of the playing XI, but they understand situations. As long as you can give them the reasons for it (not being selected).

"Players will be disappointed, but that is one of the things that makes people succeed at this level, you want to be playing, competing and part of the action, not sitting out."

Virat Kohli will captain India in the first test but decisions around the middle-order batting and how many seamers to pick will be the main conundrum for the selectors.

'Great challenge': Head coach Rahul Dravid urges India to seize their moment in history against South Africa

India head coach Rahul Dravid on Saturday, addressed the pre-match press conference ahead of the team's first Test against South Africa in the upcoming three-match series. The Indian team is gearing up to face the hosts in the Boxing Day Test that gets underway from December 26 (Sunday) at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

This will be head coach Dravid's first major assignment overseas with the Indian team since replacing Ravi Shastri. Though India are a strong unit heading into the series and are riding high on confidence having defeated New Zealand 1-0 at home recently, the South Africa Test series is going to be a huge challenge for Virat Kohli and his men.

India have never won a Test series against the Proteas in their own backyard and have a woeful record against the hosts. However, India appear favourites this time around with a great balance of youth and experience in their squad and are up against a South African side that is in transition.

Ahead of the first Test, India's biggest concern is the form of senior batters like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. While Pujara is likely to get the nod in the playing XI, Rahane's recent struggles might see him miss out on a spot in the team. Rahane was recently replaced as the vice-captain of the Test tea by Rohit Sharma, owing to his poor form. However, KL Rahul will be Kohli's deputy in the Test series due to Rohit's injury.

Opening up on Rahane's lean patch, Dravid said he has had positive conversations with the senior batter, who currently seems in a good space ahead of the series. "The conversations with him have been very positive, he's training really well this week. The conversations are no different from actually with most of the players. He seems to be in a really good space," Dravid said in the press conference.

When asked about Rahane's chances of featuring in the playing XI for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, Dravid refused to give out details and said the team combination has already been decided for the Boxing Day encounter.

"In terms of the playing XI, who's going to play you know, I think we're very clear within our group, what the kind of team is going to be leading into the Boxing Day test match," the India head coach added.

It remains to be seen if Rahane will be trusted in the series-opener on a Centurion track which is expected to assist the pacers, or if India will head into the game with Shreyas Iyer, who had a fantastic debut series against New Zealand at home.

Ajinkya Rahane seems to be in good space: Rahul Dravid on batter's rough patch ahead of SA Test series

India will lock horns with South Africa in the first Test of the upcoming three-match Test series at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 26. The Boxing Day game is all set to be a blockbuster encounter with India heading into the game on a confident note after beating New Zealand 1-0 in the recently-concluded two-match Test series at home.

Ahead of the start of the first Test, India have some major selection headaches with the likes of Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer competing for a spot in the middle-order, while Ajinkya Rahane's place in the playing XI remains in a doubt. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has picked his predicted playing XI for India ahead of the first Test.

While Rahane's struggles have been well documented in the last few Test series, Iyer is in contention for a spot in the middle-order after his magnificent debut against New Zealand where he slammed a hundred and a fifty in the two innings of his first Test. Vihari, who scored three half-centuries for India A against South Africa A, is also a strong contender to make the cut.

However, Jaffer believed the team should go with Rahane in the first Test owing to his experience and the leadership qualities he brings in. Jaffer picked Iyer over Vihari considering his recent exploits in the debut series against New Zealand at home.

"KL and Mayank will open. Pujara at number three [and] Virat Kohli at four. I'll play Ajinkya at number five. There's a lot of debate regarding his form and between him Shreyas Iyer and Vihari. For the first Test, I'll definitely prefer Ajinkya because he has the experience, the skill.

"Yes, his recent form is debatable but he has scored runs in South Africa and knows the conditions well. And he brings a lot more to the table than just batting - [like leadership] when he was the captain [or] as a slip fielder," Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

Jaffer also picked India's bowling attack for the first Test against South Africa. He named three pacers - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the attack while naming R Ashwin as the only spinner in the playing XI.

"I'll prefer Shreyas Iyer for number six because of his recent form and how he batted against New Zealand. I'll prefer him over Vihari. Vihari had a good series with India 'A', he made pretty good runs in similar conditions, but that was India 'A' series and not Tests. So I'll prefer somebody who scored runs in Tests. Number seven would be Rishabh Pant, number eight would be Ashwin and nine ten eleven would be Bumrah, Shami and Mohammed Siraj," he added.

Shreyas Iyer or Hanuma Vihari? Wasim Jaffer names India's predicted XI for 1st Test against South Africa

India are all set to take on South Africa in a three-match Test series starting from December 26. The first Test will be a Boxing Day game that gets underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion from Sunday. India are heading into the series on a confident note after defeating world Test champions New Zealand 1-0 in the recently-concluded two-match series at home but the South Africa series will be one of the most challenging assignments for the Virat Kohli-led side.

India have never won a Test series in South Africa and have managed only three wins in Test matches in the Rainbow nation so far in their cricketing history. India have always found it difficult to take down the Proteas in their own backyard in the longest format of the game.

However, with a South Africa team that is currently not on top of its game, and India running high on confidence with a number of talented players in their line-up, it might be a different result this time around. However, former India opener and popular commentator Aakash Chopra believes India won't be able to win the Test series in South Africa this year as well.

Speaking in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra predicted the three-match series to end in a 1-1 draw. He said he would have predicted South Africa to win it 2-1 but an injury to their premie pacer Anrich Nortje has improved India's chances in the Test series. Not just Nortje, South Africa are also set to miss Quinton De Kock for a part of the series.

"I don't see India winning this right now, I mean it is difficult. I would have said 2-1 for South Africa if Nortje was playing. Nortje is not there, I am saying this series can again end at 1-1. There is a chance of a drawn Test match, the first Test could be in slight trouble because of rain," said Chopra.

"It is going to be interesting but I feel this might be a drawn series. 51% South Africa, 49% India. That's what I am thinking at this point in time. If any team wins, I feel that will be South Africa," he added.

South Africa are no more the giants of Test cricket that they once were and have had to deal with a fair share of their own struggles. The team is in transition and will also miss former captain Faf du Plessis, who has already retired from the longest format. While admitting that the current South Africa side has not been able to produce the desired results, Chopra said the hosts have started to regroup well recently.

"It is not that South Africa's team is flying high. I think they are starting to regroup really well. The World Cup has shown that they have the players, where the things are falling in place but it is still a team in transition," said the former India batter.

India have their best chance to win a Test series in South Africa this year considering the talent and experience in their squad and the lack of big names in the South Africa line-up. Kohli, who has led India to some phenomenal wins overseas, will be looking to script history by inspiring the team to their maiden triumph against the Proteas in their own backyard.

'Don't see India winning this': Former opener makes bold prediction ahead of South Africa Test series

Rahul Dravid was part of the Indian team when a young Virat Kohli made his Test debut for India in 2011. Kohli has since gone on to become one of the best batsmen of the current era and has established his credentials as a modern-day great with his batting heroics across formats.

He has been one of India's most consistent run-getters over the years and is currently one of the most loved sportspersons in the world. Kohli's growth both as a cricketer and as a person has been 'phenomenal' as per head coach Dravid, who has lauded the Test skipper for driving the culture of the current Indian team.

"I was there when he made his debut, batted with him in that match. It's phenomenal 10 years later to see how he has grown as a cricketer and a person," head coach Dravid said in an interview with BCCI.TV.

On his Test debut for India against West Indies in 2011, Kohli had batted with Dravid in the second innings in Kingston, Jamaica. Kohli had scored 4 runs in the first innings and got 15 runs in the second innings. He shared a 43-run stand with Dravid in the second innings.

Kohli has since gone on to become one of India's most successful Test batters and the best Test captain that the country has ever produced. Kohli currently has 7801 runs to his name in 97 Test matches at an average of over 50. He has led India to 39 wins in 66 Tests as captain - the most by an Indian captain.

"Just the kind of performances he has had for India over the last 10 years, with the bat and the way he has led the team, have been terrific. In a lot of ways he has driven the culture of this team whether it be with fitness or energy or ambition. From the outside, it has been fascinating to watch," said Dravid as he lauded the Indian Test skipper.

From the outside, it has been fascinating to watch," said Dravid as he lauded the Indian Test skipper. .@imVkohli's transformation Excitement about SA challenge br>Initial few months as Head Coach Rahul Dravid discusses it all as #TeamIndia gear up for the first #SAvIND Test in Centurion. What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is a common term used for sporting fixtures, a day after Christmas. There are a couple of versions of why the day is known as Boxing Day and what is its significance. As per a popular version, the term comes from the alms boxes or boxes kept for the poor in churches which used to be opened, a day after the festival of Christmas.

Another popular theory that goes around is one that suggests, Boxing Day is celebrated to honour the labourers and servants who used to work even on Christmas. The name hence comes from the gift boxes they would get as presents, a day after the festival.

Boxing Day sporting fixtures:

Any sporting encounter happening on December 26 thus derives the common Boxing Day term in several major Commonwealth countries. While there is a line-up of fixtures lined up during the Boxing Day week in the English Premier League, a number of Test matches also begin on the day.

Explained! Why series-opener between India-South Africa will be called Boxing Day Test?

India's former head coach Ravi Shastri has lavished huge praise on Test captain Virat Kohli ahead of the national side's three-match series opener versus South Africa, which gets underway on December 26 in Centurion. The No. 1 ranked side have been exceptional while being on the road under Ravi Shastri and will look to carry on in similar stead under Rahul Dravid's coaching.

During Shastri's tenure, Kohli-led India become a daunting line-up while playing away from home. Under the former Indian all-rounder, India won two series in a row in Australia and gained an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom (held early this year) and demolished Sri Lanka and West Indies in their own backyard. Shastri has credited Kohli as a leader and has backed Team India to scale new heights in the African nation.

"Remember, the Proteas are no pushovers in their own backyard, but we have got the firepower and the arsenal to match that. As always, Team India will always have my backing," Shastri mentioned.

India have a strong chance to win their first-ever Test series on South African soil with the Proteas not having superstar batters in their line-up whereas India's pace attack is one of the best at present. During their last Test series in SA in early 2018, Kohli & Co. were competitive throughout the three Tests but lost 2-1. It will be interesting to see what the scoreline will be this time around.

The last two Tests will be played in Johannesburg and Cape Town before the action moves to the three ODIs, starting from mid-January 2022.

'Virat Kohli has been an impeccable leader' - Ravi Shastri praises Indian Test captain ahead of SA series

Fast bowler Duanne Olivier is likely to return to South Africa's line-up when the host team faces visitors India in the opening of a three-match Test series at Centurion Park beginning on Sunday in the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Olivier will reinforce a home seam attack that is missing injured Anrich Nortje and will play his first Test since 2019, after he chose county cricket in England over South Africa, despite substantial success in the five-day format.

Olivier stormed into the Test scene four years ago, taking 48 wickets in 10 Tests at an average of less than 20, but then signed a Kolpak deal with English county Yorkshire, thereby halting his South African cricket career.

The series is set to be a war of pace attacks on lively wickets, particularly in the first two tests on the Highveld, and Olivier's comeback is therefore apt.

After coming home when the Kolpak system was dismantled as a result of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, Olivier displayed exceptional form and finished the local four-day championship as the leading wicket-taker.

"I want our best opportunity to win matches and series, and in order for that to happen, you need to make tough calls, for instance bringing people back," South Africa captain Dean Elgar told reporters when asked if Olivier should be allowed to return.

"I was very keen to have him back, I’m happy and excited knowing what he can do on the field. There's no bad feelings about what's happened in the past."

South Africa has often relied on fast bowlers on hot home pitches to win, but they are also aware that India has built a powerful pace attack that has earned them international success in recent years.

"India has been an immensely improved bowling lineup, especially playing away from home. We`re very mindful of what we`re going to be up against," Elgar said.

India have maintained a low profile in their bio-secure bubble in Johannesburg since their arrival, but batsman Cheteshwar Pujara feels this is their greatest opportunity ever to win a Test series in South Africa.

"Our fast bowlers are our strength (in South Africa) and I hope they can utilise the conditions and give us 20 wickets in each test match."

India just concluded a home series triumph over New Zealand, while South Africa has not played Test cricket since a series victory in the West Indies in June.

Rishabh Pant has made a name for himself ever since he broke into the scene in IPL 2016. He entered the highest level with a T20I debut in early 2017. However, he made his Test debut in mid-2018 and has become a regular across formats following his memorable comeback in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Pant is now gearing up for India's upcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa, which will get underway on December 26 in Centurion. Ahead of the series opener, the 24-year-old has a chance to go past his mentor and former Indian captain MS Dhoni to become the quickest to effect 100 Test dismissals among Indian keepers.

At present, Pant has 97 dismissals up his sleeves and is three away from completing a century. If he gets there during the course of the three Tests, he will also become the quickest to 100 Test dismissals among Indians. At present, the list is spearheaded by Dhoni.

India vs SA, 1st Test: Pant aims to break mentor Dhoni's unique record in series opener in Centurion

Team India are set to commence their tour of South Africa with the first Test to get underway on December 26 in Centurion. Ahead of the three-match Test series, former SA speedster Allan Donald has lavished praise on Kohli-led Indian team and expects a bumper contest between both sides in the forthcoming series in the African nation.

Despite not having the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill, Indian team is strong enough to challenge the Dean Elgar-led side in their own backyard. The No. 1 ranked Indian team will also be eager to win their first-ever series in whites in South Africa, after losing closely (2-1) during the 2018 tour.

He added, "Kohli's comments a few years ago were that you'll never be classed as a great side if you don't win away from home and that has been something he really worked towards. You saw them win in Australia and also reach the WTC (World Test Championship) Final. This is a quality Indian team that is here. I'm looking forward to it."

Donald pointed out, "Both teams line up really well, both have strong bowling line-ups and that will mean the batting on both sides will be tested. Our batting has lost some key players in the last couple of seasons. There's no hiding from the fact that it’s a young line-up and they will be tested by the Indian attack."

"For me that is where the series will be decided. In the last few seasons, we haven't scored enough runs and that will be the challenge. If we can put the runs on the board, we undoubtedly have the bowlers who can take 20 wickets. There is a really good balance to our attack, and it will be interesting to watch."

This is a quality Indian team: Allan Donald recalls Virat Kohli's words from 2018 ahead of Centurion Test

India is gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus South Africa, which gets underway on December 26 in Centurion. Ahead of the series, Virat Kohli-led Indian team have had several injury concerns with the likes of Rohit Sharma (newly-appointed vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel being ruled out.

Thus, Kohli & Co. will have to be on their toes to get the better of Dean Elgar & Co. and attain their first-ever Test series win on South African soil. For that to happen, India will have to start well and hope for Kohli to deliver with the bat. In 2021, the right-hander hasn't been at his best and has amassed only 483 runs in 10 innings, at 28.43, with four half-centuries.

With no Rohit -- who is India's leading run-getter in whites in 2021 -- former South Africa spinner Omar Henry feels there will be pressure on Kohli both as batter and captain. "Rohit not being there is a big factor. He's been their most prolific of run-getters for a while, so make no mistake, there will be pressure on Kohli. Henry still feels India have it in them to beat SA in their own backyard despite the handful of wins (3) in the purest format, overall, in the rainbow nation. "I believe India have a window to break that losing sequence if they utilise their pace department well," he added.

On the other hand, the former cricketer also opined on the ODI captaincy row in Indian cricket, which erupted early this month after BCCI sacked Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit as the new limited-overs skipper. In this regard, he said, "(Rahul) Dravid the coach and the leader in Kohli should able to able to put all of that behind and concentrate on this important assignment. You are playing for your country. Nothing is bigger and personal issues have to come second."

With no Rohit Sharma, there will be pressure on Virat Kohli, reckons former SA spinner ahead of Centurion Test

Virat Kohli-led Team India are set to commence their three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation, on December 26 with the first Test in Centurion. Ahead of the series, Kohli & Co. are well aware that they have a brilliant chance to win their first-ever Test series on South African soil as the current No. 1 Test team had missed out on winning the 2018 series in SA, losing it 2-1 despite being competitive.

Ahead of the series opener, Master Blaster is all praise for young Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj, who made his Test debut during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, has had a dream start to his career in whites. In Australia, he ended as India's highest wicket-taker (13) whereas he returned with 14 scalps (second-most among Indians) in the India-England Tests in the United Kingdom, early this year. Hence, all eyes are once again on him for the SA series.

"There is spring in his legs and that is what I like to see. His run-up… you can see he is full of energy. And he is one of those bowlers… when you look at him, you cannot figure out whether it’s the first or the last over of the day. He is coming at you all the time. He is a proper fast bowler and his body language is so positive. That is what I like. He is a fast learner," Tendulkar told veteran sports journalist Boria Majumdar on the show 'Backstage with Boria'.

India vs SA: Virat Kohli on cusp of entering 8,000-run club ahead of Test series opener in Centurion

India's Test captain Virat Kohli's childhood coach has made some bold claims ahead of the team's upcoming Test series against South Africa. India have never managed to win a Test series in South Africa but appear to be favourites this time around with the hosts set to miss a number of key players. While there will be no Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock is set to miss a part of the three-match series and pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out due to an injury.

Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has said the Indian team used to have a defensive mindset in Tests during current head coach Rahul Dravid's playing days. Sharma lauded Kohli for bringing in a change in the mindset of the Indian team overseas and helping them gain a winning attitude away from home.

"Indian team had a defensive mindset during Rahul Dravid's playing days. They wanted to ensure they didn't lose the series when they toured abroad. Virat Kohli's approach is to win and hence he plays with 5 bowlers," said Kohli's childhood coach while speaking on YouTube channel Khelneeti.

Dravid, who replaced Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian team in November this year, helped the team bag a 1-0 win against New Zealand at home in his first Test assignment as the head coach of the team. The upcoming Test series against South Africa will be India legend's first major assignment overseas.

Sharing his views on Dravid's role in the team, Sharma said the batting legend will be helping Kohli in forming strategies off the field and grooming youngsters while the Test skipper will be the one making all the decisions on the field. He also stated that Dravid's captaincy stint during the infamous Greg Chappell era will also help him as a coach.

"Rahul Dravid has seen the Greg Chappell incident. Hence, he knows what the role of a coach is. His job is to make strategies and groom the youngsters. Ultimately it is the captain who has to lead the team," said Rajkumar.

India have been gearing up for the series with the preparations underway in Centurion which is the venue for the first Boxing Day Test from December 26. India will be looking to get off to a winning start and take an early lead in the three-match series with a win in the first Test.

Virat Kohli-led Indian Test team is in South Africa and are gearing up for the three-match Test series opener, which gets underway on December 26 in Centurion. The last two Tests will follow suit before the action moves to the three ODIs in the African nation, starting from January 19.

Following the ODIs, the tour will come to an end as the four T20Is have been rescheduled from India's current visit to South Africa. The T20Is will be held at a later date in next year. It was mainly done by both BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) after the tour was under dark clouds due to the Omicron threat in the rainbow nation. "BCCI has confirmed CSA that the Indian team will travel for three Tests and three ODIs. The remaining four T20Is will be played at a later date,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah was quoted as saying to ANI.

However, the former Test opener also conceded that the ODI Super League and South Africa's qualification chances for the 2023 ODI World Cup must have been a deciding factor for the boards to have gone ahead with the ODIs.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the upcoming Test series in South Africa is India's best chance at beating the Proteas in their own backyard and finally clinching a Test series win in the Rainbow nation. India have been a force to reckon with in Test cricket over the years and have proved their mettle both at home and overseas under captain Virat Kohli.

The Indian team will head into the South Africa series on a confident note having recently beaten New Zealand 1-0 in the two-match series at home. Gavaskar believes the absence of some of the key campaigners in South Africa presents India with a great chance at winning the upcoming Test series against the hosts.

India will play three Tests in South Africa as part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) with the first Test in Centurion getting underway from December 26 (Sunday). South Africa will be without both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, who have already retired while wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock is likely to miss a part of the series. De Kock might miss the second and third Tests having asked for paternity leave.

"Coming to India's tour of South Africa, the turmoil with the release of the SJN report indicting three former South African greats is certainly not going to help the home team," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

"There is also talk about Quinton de Kock, who loves Indian bowling, not being available to play the second and third Test. That weakens a fragile batting line-up even more and presents India with its best-ever chance of winning a Test series there," he added.

India lost their last Test series 2-1 against South Africa away from home when Du Plessis was in charge of the hosts. However, this time around India will start as favourites against the Dean Elgar-led side. Besides De Kock, South Africa are also set to miss the services of pacer Anrich Nortje, who has been ruled out of the Test series due to a persistent injury.

Sunil Gavaskar explains why Kohli & Co. have the best chance of winning upcoming Test series vs South Africa

South Africa have been handed a massive blow ahead of the three-match Test series against India at home. Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the Test series owing to a persistent injury. The two sides are all set to lock horns in the series-opener of the three-match rubber from Sunday (December 26) at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Cricket South Africa on Tuesday confirmed that Nortje has failed to recover fully ahead of the start of the Test series and will not be taking part in the three-match rubber. His absence will be a huge blow for the hosts against a strong Indian side as Nortje was on top-notch form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and the T20 World Cup 2021.

He has been one of the best fast bowlers for his country across formats over the last couple of years and was expected to continue his stellar run in the India Test series. In his absence, Kagiso Rabada will spearhead South Africa's pace attack also consisting of the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Duanne Olivier among others.

"He has unfortunately not recovered adequately for the expected Test match bowling loads and is currently consulting with specialists to manage and advise on his recovery. No replacement will be brought in," CSA said in a statement.

South Africa have been training ahead of the start of the three-match series and the Indian team also has hit the ground running in Centurion. The Indian players were spotted enjoying a quality practice session at the SuperSport Park on Monday under the watchful eyes of head coach Rahul Dravid.

Huge blow for South Africa as pacer Anrich Nortje ruled out of India Test series due to persistent injury

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed the upcoming three-match Test series between India and South Africa, followed by the three-match ODI series between the two sides will both be played behind closed doors with no fans present at the stadiums. CSA has decided not to sell any tickets and have fans at the stadiums due to the COVID-19 threat in the country.

The Indian team is already in South Africa and has been training in Centurion for the last few days ahead of the first Test between the two sides. The first Test is set to get underway from Sunday (December 26) in Centurion followed by the next two matches in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively.

"Cricket South Africa (CSA) has noted the interests of cricket fans and other stakeholders on the scheduling and the release of the details of ticket sales, in connection with the forthcoming India vs Proteas tour that is scheduled to begin in less than a week," CSA said in a statement.

Cricket South Africa explained the reason behind the decision to not have fans present in the stadium for the matches by stating that it does not want to put the safety of the players and other support staff at risk. CSA believes having fans can compromise the bio-bubble arrangements for the series.

"Regrettably, CSA wishes to inform the most ardent fans of cricket as well as all sports lovers that owing to the increasing COVID cases around the world, and the fourth wave locally, the two cricketing bodies have taken a joint decision to protect the players and the tour by NOT making tickets available for the India vs Proteas offerings. This decision was taken in order to avoid any breaches that could compromise the tour from a Covid-risk perspective and to also maintain a hazard-free bubble environment," CSA added.

India's Test and ODI series against South Africa to be played behind closed doors due to COVID-19

India are gearing up to take on South Africa in the series-opener of the upcoming three-match Test series which gets underway from December 26. The Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion will kick off the much-anticipated Test rubber between the two sides. India have been training in Centurion for the past three days after landing in Centurion.

Ahead of the first Tets, the visitors face some major selection headaches with regards to both the batting and the bowling department. While Kohli has preferred to play with five specialist bowlers overseas, the green track and bouncy conditions in Centurion might tempt the visitors to go with an extra batter or include Shardul Thakur in the playing XI as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin.

If India decide to play four bowlers only, an extra batter in the form of Ajinkya Rahane or Shreyas Iyer can be included in the XI. Rahane's spot in the XI is no more certain as he has been replaced as the vice-captain of the team. Rohit Sharma had been named his replacement but in his absence, KL Rahul will be Kohli's deputy in the Test series which means Rahane faces massive competition.

Iyer, who made a stunning debut against New Zealand at home, can be asked to continue batting in the middle-order with Rahul either taking the opener's role or sliding into the middle-order himself. With no Ravindra Jadeja in the squad, Shardul can prove to be a great asset for India as he can be an extra batting option at no.7.

Former chief selector MSK Prasad believes Shardul is the best choice for India, in case the visitors decide to play five bowlers in the Test match. He also named the four pacers India should pick for the game while leaving out senior pacer Ishant Sharma, who has been pipped in the pecking order by Mohammed Siraj after the youngster's recent performances in the whites.

"I think Shardul Thakur is the best choice if they go in with five bowlers as he also gives the option of a steady No.7 batter and we also have Ravichandran Ashwin," Prasad told PTI.

"Four bowlers in this line-up are now confirmed if all fit -- Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj. I don't think, Ishant will be considered ahead of Siraj on current form," the former chief selector added.

Hanuma Vihari is another name in contention for a start in the first Test after impressing in India A's tour of South Africa where he struck three half-centuries against South Africa A. Vihari can take Jadeja's spot in the playing XI in case India decide to go with three pacers and Ashwin as their four bowlers. Shardul Thakur in, no Ishant Sharma? MSK Prasad gives his take on India's playing XI for 1st Test against SA

Virat Kohli-led Team India are gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus South Africa at Centurion, which will get underway on December 26. Ahead of the three Tests, the onus is on King Kohli. The 33-year-old has been in the news due to his recent presser, before India's departure to SA, where he openly contradicted from Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI's claims regarding the ODI captaincy switch and him resigning as a T20I skipper.

While things aren't at its best between Kohli and BCCI, nothing of that will matter when India take on SA in the upcoming Tests with an aim to win their first-ever series in whites on African soil. For that to happen, Kohli will have to lead from the front with the willow in hand. For the unversed, he hasn't had much success in Tests in 2021 whereas his last international ton came in late 2019. In the calendar year, he averages a mere 28.41 in whites, with a high-score of 72. Hence, it remains to be seen how the right-hander will perform with the bat.

Nonetheless, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Saba Karim has backed Kohli to come good and deliver with the bat in the South Africa tour. He feels the burden of not being the limited-overs captain will help Kohli in many ways.

Speaking during an interaction on India News, Karim said, "It seems a burden has been removed from Virat Kohli's head. He can play with an open mind now, he can revive his Test career afresh. The expectation is that he will dish out performances like he was doing two years back.

“If he bats with an open mind and approach, he can repeat those performances. I have full belief that the form he has shown in the practice sessions, the same form will be seen in the match as well,” he added.

'Quality practice, good intensity': Rahul Dravid gives pep talk to Indian players ahead of SA Tests - WATCH

India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara believes his team can win a historic first test series in South Africa, thanks to their formidable fast bowling attack on the lively Highveld pitches where the first two of three tests will be played.

India is coming off from a home victory over New Zealand, while South Africa hasn't played red ball cricket since June ahead of the first test, which begins on December 26 in Pretoria.

"We have played a couple of tests in India, so most of the guys are in touch," Pujara said on Saturday to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

"There is enough time for us to prepare and the guys are really looking forward to these tests. It is the best chance for us to finally win a series in South Africa."

Pujara feels that the growing influence of India's fast bowling attack, which has contributed to recent success overseas, gives them confidence that they can beat the home team on what are typically seamer-friendly South African pitches.

"Our fast bowlers have been the difference between the sides overall when we have played abroad. If you look at the Australia and England series, we have done exceptionally well as a bowling unit."

South Africa may be undercooked, with a lot of their key players having not played first-class cricket since their series victory in the West Indies in June, but Pujara believes India should focus on what they do well and not worry about the opposition's problems.

India's strength and conditioning coach, Soham Desai, said that after three days of hard quarantine in Mumbai, starting a skill session right away would have been "high risk", which is why the team had an easy session on Friday evening.

"We have had three days of hard quarantine in Mumbai and we've had 10 hours of long flight and yesterday (Thursday) was again a hard quarantine day here, so starting out (a) skill session straightaway would have been a high-risk thing for the guys. So, today evening (Friday), we went for a run, we got together stretched out, sweated out? this game (footvolley) is going to help them bridge the gap between inactivity and the skills (sessions) from tomorrow (Saturday)," said Desai.

Desai said his biggest task would be to help the players adjust to the Johannesburg altitude. The team had been quarantined in Mumbai at sea level, while Johannesburg was at an altitude of 1400 metres.

"Also the schedule is such that we have to get going right away and we can do only so much to adjust to the elevation here, which is 1400 metres and we are coming from sea level, so the guys are going to take 2-3 days to adapt to that," he said.

"This game (footvolley) can be called the Indian team game because? meaning? we give them options to play many other games but they end up choosing foot volley and they enjoy it, they love it? they have their own battles within the team going on for years now.

"This game, the laughter, and banter are ways to eliminate all those things which are creeping in their minds time away from home and the best way I can think of that helps them to focus on the game and stay in a happy space (sic)," he added.

Ind v SA: Team India holds its first practice session ahead of the Boxing Day Test - WATCH

KL Rahul has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. The Indian team is currently in South Africa for a three-match Test rubber followed by as many ODIs. The Test series is scheduled to get underway from December 26 with the first Test in Centurion.

Rohit Sharma had replaced struggling Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test team ahead of the South Africa series, however, he will not be in action due to an injury. Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during training last week and has been ruled out of the Test series. He is likely to return to lead the team in ODIs.

Rahul, who has been appointed as the vice-captain in limited-overs formats as well, will now act as Kohli's deputy in the Test series. The star batter is seen as one of the future captaincy prospects of the Indian team and has also been captaining in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the last two seasons now. BCCI confirmed Rahul's appointment as vice-captain of the Test team on Saturday.

Rohit, on the other hand, is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he is working on his recovery. If he manages to recover fully, the Hitman will be joining the Indian squad before the start of the ODI series against South Africa.

Meanwhile, Rahane is all set to be under the scanner in the upcoming Test series against South Africa considering his struggles with the bat recently. The senior batter has been far from his best in the longest format over the last couple of years and his spot in the team remains under threat if he fails to spark a turnaround in South Africa.

KL Rahul to be India's vice-captain for South Africa Test series in Rohit Sharma's absence

Indian youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad has been enjoying a purple patch in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Captaining Maharashtra in the tournament, Gaikwad has dominated the run-scoring charts with over 600 runs so far in just five matches as he bangs on the selectors' door ahead of the ODI series against South Africa.

One of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s best batters in the last couple of years, Gaikwad was the highest run-getter in IPL 2021 and has been in sensational form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While he has already made his T20I debut for India, he might get to make his ODI debut in the upcoming South Africa ODI series.

Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra feels Gaikwad had done enough to get a chance in the ODI series against the Proteas. The CSK star has 603 runs in five matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy so far with as many as for centuries and an average of over 150.

Chopra said Gaikwad's name should be the first one for consideration when the squad is picked for the ODI series against South Africa. The former cricketer heaped praise on the 24-year-old stating that he has seen some of the right-hander's innings and it felt like he was playing against kids.

“The first name, the name at the top is Ruturaj Gaikwad. I mean he has hit four centuries, at one point he had hit three hundreds in three matches and no one was able to get him out. I saw some of his innings. It seemed like he was playing against kids," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"He was only playing the sweep shots against the fast bowlers, who does that? Inside out fours against the spinners. Bowlers were bowling alright but Ruturaj actually looked in a different league altogether," he added.

Chopra feels it will be almost impossible for the selectors to ignore Gaikwad, who has been in red-hot form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has already proved his worth in the IPL with a season to remember for CSK. The youngster is likely to make the cut in the ODI squad but it remains to be seen if he will get a chance in the playing XI.

“He made 603 runs at an average of 150 and a strike rate of nearly 113. There are four centuries in that, the recent scores are 168, 21, 124, 154* and 136. It actually felt that the guy is ready for the Indian team. It’s absolutely impossible that his name will not be discussed,” said Chopra.

Virat Kohli led-Team India reaches Johannesburg for South Africa Tests

India Test skipper Virat Kohli said Rohit Sharma's absence in the Test series against South Africa is a big problem for the Men in Blues as his partnership was an important factor.

"Will miss his abilities a lot. He's proven in England already that he's really worked his Test game out, and the opening partnership was very important for us to play in that series. Obviously, with his experience and skill, we will miss those qualities," said Virat Kohli in a virtual conference.

"That said, it's an opportunity for Mayank [Agarwal] and KL [Rahul] to step up and solidify that start for us and make sure the good work is carried on in this series," he added.

Rohit will be missing the upcoming Test series after the hamstring injury and Priyank Panchal was named as the replacement. Last week, Rohit was handed the reins of ODIs along with the T20I formats.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja's absence due to a forearm injury, Kohli said that the all-rounder contributes to all three departments and the team will try to create the best combination possible in his absence.

As much as we'll miss him, it won't be a deciding factor," said Kohli.

Will miss Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja's abilities in Test series vs South Africa, says Virat Kohli

Team India are set to leave for South Africa, where they will play three Tests and equal number of ODIs. Before the tour opener, India have been dealt with several injuries as key players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shubman Gill have been ruled out.

Recently, newly-appointed Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma also got injured and has been ruled out of action at least till the three Tests in South Africa. Thus, the national selectors will have to name a new vice-captain for the Tests. In this scenario, they have quite a few options to choose from in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah. Moreover, Ajinkya Rahane can also be named the vice-captain once again only for the upcoming series.

Nonetheless, reports have suggested that Rahul is the frontrunner. For the unversed, he is already Rohit's deputy in the T20I format and a strong contender to be the vice-captain in the ODI format as well.

Thus, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman and selector Saba Karim also named Rahul as the vice-captain for the SA Tests. "They need to announce (a new vice-captain). You may not have an urgent need of a vice-captain in a home series but you definitely need a vice-captain overseas. Sometimes, when the captain is not on the field, you need a deputy to take over things,” Karim said in the Khelneeti podcast.

“I think KL Rahul should be the vice-captain. You don't need to go back to the past, you need to look for the future. And for me, the most promising candidate for the position is KL Rahul," he added.

You don't need to go back to the past, you need to look for the future. And for me, the most promising candidate for the position is KL Rahul," he added. ALSO READ | Not Pujara or Bumrah! 'Most promising candidate is...' - Former wicketkeeper-batsman picks Team India's vice-captain for SA Tests

After Rohit Sharma's hamstring injury forced him to pull out of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa on Monday (November 13), Virat Kohli has reportedly decided to opt out of the ODI series against the Proteas. India are scheduled to tour South Africa later this month for a three-match Test series followed by as many ODIs. While Kohli will be leading the team in Tests, newly-appointed white-ball captain Rohit will lead in the ODI series.

However, both Rohit and Kohli are unlikely to play together during the South Africa tour. As per a report in the Times of India, Kohli will not take part in the ODI series as it coincides with the first birthday of his daughter Vamika. Kohli had informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in advance that he will be opting for a break in January this year.

While Kohli will be missing the ODI series due to personal reasons, Rohit will not be part of the Test series after picking up a hamstring injury while training in Mumbai. BCCI on Monday had announced that the Test vice-captain will miss the three-match series with Priyank Panchal named his replacement.

As per the report, Kohli's decision has nothing to do with the ongoing controversy surrounding the change in ODI captaincy in Indian cricket. Rohit replaced Kohli as the ODI captain last week. While announcing India's Test squad fo the South Africa series, the board confirmed that Rohit will be leading India in ODIs as well from the upcoming South Africa tour.

Rohit had earlier been appointed as the T20I captain of the team after Kohli decided to step down from the post following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. While the move didn't surprise many, the manner in which it was announced by the BCCI left many miffed.

BCCI announced the decision of Rohit taking over as ODI captain from Kohli without any explanation from the selectors or comments from Kohli. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly later issued a statement stating that the selectors wanted to have only one white-ball captain going ahead which led to the decision of Rohit replacing Kohli in ODIs.

The development has since become the biggest talking point among the cricket fraternity with several former cricketers and experts sharing their views on the matter. While Kohli will miss the ODI series, Rohit is expected to return to full fitness by the time and should be available to lead the team in the three matches.

Virat Kohli set to miss upcoming ODI series against South Africa due to personal reasons - Report

Rohit Sharma had been recently appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, replacing senior batter Ajinkya Rahane ahead of the upcoming tour of South Africa. However, Rohit is now set to miss the three-match series following a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury while practising in Mumbai ahead of the Test series.

India A batter Priyank Panchal has been named Rohit's replacement for the three-match rubber as the Hitman faces a race against time to recover for the three ODIs that will be preceded by the Test series. India are scheduled to play three Tests as many ODIs on their tour of South Africa which gets underway from December 26.

While the BCCI has confirmed Panchal will be his replacement, it is not certain who will be taking over as the vice-captain of the team in his absence. Rahane is unlikely to be handed over the vice-captaincy role after being replaced and a younger player might get a chance to be Kohli's deputy in the series.

Here is a look at players who can replace Rohit Sharma as vice-captain for the South Africa Test series:

1) Rishabh Pant

One of the best performers for India with the bat in Test cricket over the last couple of years, Pant has finally cemented his spot in the Indian team across formats. He played numerous memorable knocks for India on their tour of Australia in 2020-21 to help them win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a second time in the row under Ajinkya Rahane. Pant also led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has done well as a captain. He can be a perfect fit for the vice-captain's role in order to be groomed as one of the future leaders of the Indian team in the longest format.

2) Jasprit Bumrah

One of the few members of the current Indian squad, who is a regular across all three formats, Jasprit Bumrah has been a consistent performer for the team ever since making his international debut in 2016. He will be one of the strongest contenders to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the South Africa series. Gifted with a great cricketing brain and exceptional skills, Bumrah has been a mainstay for Team India and has matured into a fine leader of the pace attack. With countries going against the idea of not handing over leadership roles to bowlers, Bumrah can be a perfect choice for vice-captaincy.

3) KL Rahul

KL Rahul can be an obvious choice considering he is also Rohit Sharma's deputy in limited-overs cricket. Rahul has been in and out of the Test team for a while now but can be a regular member of the playing XI in the South Africa Tests considering Rohit's injury and Rahane's poor form. Cheteshwar Pujara has also struggled of late which can open the door for Rahul's inclusion in the XI and he can be made Kohli's deputy in the longest format. He has also led Punjab Kings in the IPL for two seasons and is likely to lead whichever team he joins ahead of IPL 2022.
