Members of the South African cricket team have been told to undergo a 14-day period of self-isolation and social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus following their return from an aborted tour of India.

The players arrived back in South Africa on Wednesday ten days after departing on a tour during which they played no cricket.

The first of three scheduled one-day internationals was abandoned without a ball bowled because of rain and the remaining two were cancelled.

Dr Shuaib Manjra, Cricket South Africa’s medical officer, who accompanied the team on the tour, during which they stayed in or travelled through Dubai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Kolkata, said the cancellation had been decided because of the rapid change in the global coronavirus situation.

“CSA had engaged in a risk assessment before the tour,” said Dr Manjra. “We deemed the risk to be very low. While on tour the world became a different place and we had to take cognisance of the fact that there was a change in the global environment.”

He said the risks were re-assessed, especially the possibility of borders being closed. “Ultimately the players’ frame of mind was the determining factor,” he said, adding the players had been concerned about their families and what was happening in South Africa.

Dr Manjra said the team had effectively been in isolation in India and had travelled on chartered flights and coaches in a sanitised environment.

But he said it had been decided to follow expert guidance on prevention of the spread of the virus.

“We’ve educated the players about the disease,” he said. “We’ve recommended that all players self-isolate and social-distance themselves for a minimum of 14 days to protect people around them and their communities.”

England’s tour of Sri Lanka has also been postponed as the coronavirus pandemic has virtually wiped out the global sporting calendar for the next few months.

Rain washes out first India-South Africa one-day international

With India-South Africa series, ace Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya would be making his comeback to the cricket field in the international circuit after remaining sidelined due to a lower back injury for quite a few months. Hardik, who displayed scintillating form in the recently concluded DY Patil T20 Cup, where the flamboyant all-rounder smashed a couple of blistering centuries to take the cricketing circuit by storm. After proving his fitness in the T20 tournament, Hardik was named in the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting from March 12 in Dharamsala.

Hardik was supposed to make his comeback in India 'A' tour of New Zealand, where the right-handed all-rounder was named in the squad, however, he failed the fitness test and Vijay Shankar was sent as a replacement. Now, Hardik has revealed that it was a mental challenge for him to come back to full fitness due to the number of injuries and setbacks he was having before and after the ICC World Cup 2019.

Hardik said that he missed the dressing room atmosphere while he was out injured in the last six months while adding the feeling of playing for the country and donning the Team India jersey is unmatchable. However, the 26-year-old all-rounder said that he is glad to overcome the setbacks and is now gearing up for hitting the right chords for Team India, on the cricket field.&nbsp;

"I missed this atmosphere the most in these last six months, playing for the country and the feeling you get wearing the team’s colours,” Hardik told teammate Yuzvendra Chahal in an interview posted on BCCI's official website.

<h2>"A mental challenge and there were a lot of setbacks"</h2>

“That had become a mental challenge and there were a lot of setbacks. I was trying to get back to full fitness quickly but that did not work out and a lot of mental pressure came at the time. But touchwood, everything went fine, the rehabilitation went well and a lot of people helped me,” he added.

Hardik's form in DY Patil T20 Cup was surreal. The flamboyant all-rounder smoked sixes for fun and piled misery on the opposition bowlers. For the ace all-rounder, going back to the field and practice in match situation was important to regain confidence. However, Hardik joked that he never thought of hitting 20 sixes in an innings while adding he enjoyed batting in the tournament.

"It was important. I had not played anything for six and a half months. I wanted to make an international comeback so it was very important for my confidence. No matter how much you practice, the match situation is always different," said Pandya when asked about DY Patil Cup performance."

“So I just kept on playing, my confidence kept improving and the sixes were coming off well. I thought if they are coming off well, why should I stop and I kept going. But I never thought that I want to hit 20 sixes in an innings,” he added.

Hardik's fitness and form will be crucial to Team India's hopes of lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 which is scheduled to be held in Australia in October 2020.&nbsp;

“We have thought about this thing (not using saliva) but I can’t say right now we will not use saliva because if we don’t use saliva then how will we shine the ball. Then we will get hit and you people will say you are not bowling well,” the 31-year-old pacer, who is returning to the team after recovering from sports hernia surgery, said during the pre-match press conference ahead of the first ODI in Dharamsala.

While BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has maintained that the IPL will go as per the schedule, Bhuvneshwar is of the view that nothing can be said at this point when it comes to the fate of IPL 2020.&nbsp;

“You cannot say anything right now because it’s taking a dangerous situation in India. But we are taking every precaution we can take. We have a team doctor with us and he is giving us instructions about dos and don’ts. So we hope it won’t go (spread) much further,” Bhuvneshwar said.

"We cannot avoid fans because they love us," he added.

Just like the South African team, Indian players have been advised to stay away from fans and not indulge in fan-activities like taking selfies, giving autographs, to name a few. Bhuvneshwar confirmed that that team doctor has asked them to maintain personal hygiene and to not get closer to the fans.

However, Bhuvneshwar further said that the players can't stay away from fans as they support them.

“Few dos and don’ts which the team doctor wants us to do. Simple things like maintaining hygiene, keep washing your hands regularly and not going closer to fans and all those things. Coronavirus effect on India-South Africa ODIs: The saliva conundrum for Bhuvneshwar Kumar

This will be India's final international assignment prior to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and the fans would hope to witness the best from Team India in the series. Indian skipper Virat Kohli would be hoping to end his poor run of form when he takes to the field in Dharamsala on Thursday. The return of Faf:

For South Africa, Faf du Plessis will mark his return to the ODI squad since the conclusion of ICC World Cup 2019. Even though the Proteas have seen de Kock taking over the leadership duties, du Plessis' experience could come in handy if the visitors want to stun India at their own den.&nbsp;

India vs South Africa, 1st ODI in Dharamsala: Virat Kohli & Co. eye fresh start against revamped Proteas

Ahead of the final Test against South Africa, Indian wicket-keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha on Friday said wicket-keeping is a 'tough' and 'thankless' job.

"Keeping is a tough job and it is a thankless job as we are wearing gloves so everybody thinks that we will catch every ball easily. It is not an easy job on turning track or on the pitch where there is an uneven bounce," Saha told reporters in the pre-match conference here.&nbsp;

Saha took some exceptional catches behind the stumps in the last match on Umesh Yadav's and Ravichandran Ashwin's deliveries.

"We prepare according to the wicket. I know the way how Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin bowl so I adjust myself according to the situation," he added.

"Everyone tries to contribute to the team. As a player, I try to contribute with my keeping and then with batting," said Saha.

The 34-year-old felt that Sourav Ganguly's becoming the President of BCCI is a good thing for the players.

"After Dada (Sourav Ganguly) is becoming the President of BCCI so it will help the players," Saha said.

Saha was picked for the West Indies tour but did not get a chance to play. He got his chance against South Africa in the home series in which he has contributed 21 runs as he only got to bat in a single inning.

"I was out from the team for long due to injury and then I played in domestic and India A games to get my spot in the Indian side. Umesh Yadav bowled well in the first innings and created chances and did the same thing in the second innings. It feels good when you contribute to the team," Saha said.

India has an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series and will play the final match of the series from October 19.

Ahead of the final Test against South Africa, Indian wicket-keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha on Friday said wicket-keeping is a 'tough' and 'thankless' job. "Keeping is a tough job and it is a thankless job as we are wearing gloves so everybody thinks that we will catch every ball easily.

"Keeping is a tough job and it is a thankless job as we are wearing gloves so everybody thinks that we will catch every ball easily. It is not an easy job on turning track or on the pitch where there is an uneven bounce," Saha told reporters in the pre-match conference here. Saha took some exceptional catches behind the stumps in the last match on Umesh Yadav's and Ravichandran Ashwin's deliveries. "We prepare according to the wicket. Wicket-keeping is a thankless job: Wriddhiman Saha

Opener Rohit Sharma who was under the gun when he walked into bat on the first day of Test against South Africa redeemed himself with an unbeaten 115.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-vs-south-africa-first-test-rohit-sharmas-century-gives-india-a-strong-start-253257">Sharma in the post-match press </a>conference told reporters that opening suited his game.

"I think it suits my game," Rohit said, adding,"Just wear the pads and go in to bat. I don't like the waiting game."

Rohit has been India's most prolific one-day batsman in recent times but was unable to make any headway in the Test squad, however, on Wednesday he made his presence felt hitting five sixes and 12 fours in his 174-ball stay at the wicket as rain stopped play early at Visakhapatnam.

"You know the bowlers who are bowling with the new ball, so the game plan is easier for you... At number six, the ball is reversing, field placement is different and you need to keep all those things in mind," a relieved Rohit said after the first day's play.

"Opening the batting is a different ball game in red ball cricket. Of course mentally you have to train your mind more than anything else," he said. "You have to challenge yourself to play the new ball and take the game forward."

Rohit was ably supported by Mayank Agarwal who made a valient 84 and stayed put at the other end.

"We wanted to use our feet and get closer to the ball and then obviously those are my shots that I play and I wanted to back myself and back my game," said Sharma.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis mixed his spinners but was unable to get a breakthrough as his bowlers struggled as India reached 202 without loss on a rain-hit day.

Star batsman of Team India Rohit Sharma struck a century in his first outing as Test opener to help India start strongly in the first match against South Africa on Wednesday.

Sharma -- a star of India's limited-overs teams -- reached 115 and Mayank Agarwal 84 after the hosts elected to bat first in Visakhapatnam and made South Africa toil.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis rotated his spinners, led by Keshav Maharaj, for a large part of the day with intermittent spells from pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander.

India, who top the Test World Championship rankings, are looking for a record 11th Test series win at home.

A sudden thunder storm forced the umpires to call tea seven minutes early.

India vs South Africa, first Test: Rohit Sharma's century gives India a strong start

After showcasing a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/virat-kohli-wants-india-to-step-out-of-comfort-zone-ahead-of-world-t20-251440">brilliant performance against India</a> on Sunday, South Africa captain Quinton de Kock said team's hard work has paid off.

South Africa, throughout the series, displayed amazing fielding. With the combination of good fielding and bowling, they restricted India to 134 runs in the third T20I.

The Proteas then easily chased the target to register a nine-wicket victory.

"Coming into the series, we worked really hard on our catching and fielding in general. It is a good feeling to see everything coming together, from a captain's point of view and from the team`s point of view. It is nice to see that hard work pays off," De Kock said in a post-match press conference.

Bjorn Fortuin took two wickets in the match and conceded 19 runs from his three overs. De Kock praised Fortuin saying, "I am impressed with Bjorn Fortuin, a young spinner."

"The Indian team is very good to play spinners and to bowl the way he did, I can only praise him at the highest level," he added.&nbsp;

With this win, South Africa levelled the three-match T-20 series against India. South Africa batsman Rassie van der Dussen, who accompanied De Kock during the press conference, called De Kock a world-class player and said he led from the front as De Kock played an unbeaten knock of 79 runs during the chase.

"We probably would have bowled first and I think they did not add enough runs to really put us under pressure. Quinton is a world-class player.... We came here with a goal to win and send a strong message and captain led from the front," he said.

India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in Sunday's third Twenty20 international against South Africa.

The hosts, who lead the three-match series 1-0, are unchanged from their previous win on Wednesday. The opening game was washed out.

Most games at the Bangalore stadium have been won by the team batting second, but Kohli said his decision is aimed at getting battle ready for the T20 World Cup next year.

"I know it's a chasing ground, that's what teams do here in the IPL (Indian Premier League) too, but heading into the World Cup we want to strengthen areas and put ourselves under pressure," Kohli said at the toss.

"Of course results are always going to be a priority, but we need to push ourselves out of our comfort zone with the World Cup coming up."

South Africa have made one change in their bid to level the series, with left-arm paceman Beuran Hendricks coming in for Anrich Nortje.&nbsp;

"Whether we bat or bowl first we just have to make sure we come out here and compete," said skipper Quinton de Kock.

India opt to bat in third South Africa T20

Rain is likely to play spoilsport in the third and final T20I of the three-match series between India and South Africa.

The weather predictions show that thunderstorm and rain is likely in Bengaluru throughout the day, because of which the match may get curtailed.

The first match of the series was also abandoned due to rain at Dharamshala whereas the second T20I was won by India by seven wickets, owing to skipper Virat Kohli's match-winning knock of 72 runs.

Before the start of the second T20I, Proteas skipper Quinton de Kock had said that it is not ideal if matches get washed out as there are only a few games in the preparation for T20 World Cup next year in Australia.

"Obviously it is a bit of negative. We would have liked to play at Dharamshala. We would like to play as many matches heading into the 20-20 World Cup next year so losing out on one game is not ideal. But it is what it is. It is now a two-match series. It would be an exciting format so we will see how things go," de Kock had said.

Rain likely to play spoilsport in India vs South Africa third T20I

India's newly appointed batting coach Vikram Rathour has joined head coach Ravi Shastri in demanding more discipline from exciting stumper-batsman Rishabh Pant.

Pant's six-hitting ability makes him a limited-overs asset, but Shastri in a recent interview said the 21-year-old's penchant for throwing away his wicket has occasionally let the team down.

The Delhi player is perceived as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's natural successor in limited-overs cricket when the former captain eventually hangs up his gloves, but Rathour insisted Pant must improve his shot selection.

"Rishabh is a phenomenal player, no doubt about that," Rathour told reporters in Mohali ahead of the second Twenty20 International against South Africa on Wednesday.

"Of course he needs to sort out his gameplan a little more. He needs to bring in a little bit of discipline to his cricket."

With next year's Twenty20 World Cup in mind, Rathour extended the message to all young members of the side that fearless cricket did not mean reckless cricket.

"What the team management is asking from them is fearless cricket - having clear gameplans and playing with intent, backing your strengths. At the same time, you cannot be careless," the former India opener said.

"I'm sure they are smart enough to understand that."

India will also play three tests against South Africa next month, when limited-overs stalwart Rohit Sharma may reinvent himself as a test opener.

Rohit smashed a record five centuries at this year's 50-overs World Cup, but the white-ball stalwart has managed only 27 sporadic test appearances.

Rathour said 32-year-old Rohit has the game to succeed across formats, which would be a massive boost for the side.

"He has done so well as an opener in white ball cricket, so I don’t see any reason why he can’t do well in red ball cricket as well, provided we provide him enough opportunities," Rathour said.

"If he comes good, it will be a huge asset for the team. Somebody of his experience, the kind of cricket he plays - if he plays at the top of the order, it will be a huge thing."

"Be it blue or white, it`s always an honour to represent my country," Gill tweeted. The selection panel had announced the Test team for the three-match series against South Africa on Thursday.KL Rahul who had a disappointing series against Windies was dropped from the squad and in place of him, Gill was added to the side. Talking about Gill, chief selector MSK Prasad said, "Shubman Gill has done well in both positions as an opener and middle order, so he can be a back up in both the slots". The 20-year-old has been in exceptional form as he displayed match-winning performances for India A. In the recently concluded Test between India A and South Africa A, the batsman played a knock of 90 runs. He also scored 204 runs in the Test against West Indies A. After the ICC objected to Indian wicketkeeper batsmen <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/against-regulations-icc-wants-indian-army-insignia-removed-from-ms-dhonis-gloves-225061">MS Dhoni's Army insignia</a> on his glove during the World Cup match against South Africa, sources in Board Control of Cricket in India(BCCI) said it stands by the former Indian captain.

Sources in BCCI said it stood by Dhoni as the insignia was neither "commercial nor religious" in nature. The insignia is&nbsp;not even of his regiment, the sources added, asserting that the board will go through the "formality of applying for permission".

Dhoni is an honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Territorial Army&nbsp;and dagger is part of their emblem.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/ms-dhoni-falls-foul-of-icc-regulations-225178/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will continue wearing the dagger insignia on his wicket-keeping gloves as it is not a military symbol, Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai said. The CoA chief informed that the BCCI has sought the ICC's permission for it.

"The BCCI had already sent a formal request to the ICC for clearance. As per ICC regulations, players can't sport any commercial, religious or military logo. There was nothing commercial or religious in this regard as we all know," Rai told PTI

"And it is not the paramilitary regimental dagger that is embossed in his gloves. So Dhoni is not in breach of ICC regulations," he added.

The CoA chief's defence is based on the fact that the para-regimental dagger logo has word 'Balidan' (sacrifice) inscribed on it, which is not the case with the logo sported by Dhoni.

Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager - Strategic Communications had objected to Dhoni's insignia, saying: "It is against the regulations and we have requested it is removed."

Furlong had added that it was a "request" for removal and not a "breach".

Meanwhile, #DhoniKeepTheGloves began trending on social media as the controversy over the insignia erupted. Indians backed Dhoni to retain the insignia.

India captain Virat Kohli praised paceman Jasprit Bumrah for leading an impressive bowling unit in his team's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-beat-south-africa-by-six-wickets-in-cricket-world-cup-224756">opening win in the World Cup against South Africa </a>on Wednesday.

Bumrah, the world's top-ranked one-day international bowler, struck early to remove the South African openers including Hashim Amla for six, in India's six-wicket win in Southampton.&nbsp;

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the Indian bowlers, with figures of 4-51 that came after Bumrah's early assault on a cloudy morning.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-quinton-de-kocks-stunning-catch-that-dismissed-indias-virat-kohli-in-world-cup-224765">Kohli said the 25-year-old Bumrah</a> would be a "massive factor" for his team at the 50-over showpiece event.

"The way he's bowling right now, it's so good to see because you see batsmen literally clueless against him and he's rushing people," said Kohli of his pace ace.

"To be honest, I haven't seen Hashim get out like that in one-day cricket... I think it's a great thing and it's a testimony to his hard work."

"He understands this is his time and he's making the most of it so hats off, he's brilliant. He's going to be a massive factor for us here."

Bumrah had the white ball darting around in Southampton as he got Amla to edge a rising delivery to Rohit Sharma at second slip.

Bumrah then struck again in his next over, with Quinton de Kock, who made 10, edging to Kohli at third slip, meaning South Africa were two down for 24.

"Well, one thing you know with facing Jasprit is you have to play good cricketing shots against him and you have to back your technique against him," said Kohli.

"Because if you are hesitant a little bit, he senses that and he's all over you."

Chahal soon took over with his leg spin to strike twice in an over including the big wicket of South African captain Faf du Plessis for 38.

Chahal wrecked the South African middle order with good support from spin partner Kuldeep Yadav, who chipped in with 1-46.

"I think Kuldeep bowled really well, he controlled the game from one end and I think Chahal was outstanding," said Kohli of the spin twins.

"Even with a little bit of turn and help from the pitch, what he was able to bring out of the wicket was truly brilliant to see. He has mental belief in his strength and full credit goes to him."

India next play Australia at the Oval on Sunday.

Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team bid to win the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">World Cup</a> for the third time as the 'Men in Blue' are set to kick off the twelfth edition of tournament, which is underway in England and Wales.&nbsp;

For the tournament, the team will wear a special jersey, which was launched in March.&nbsp;

The kit makers&nbsp;have emblazoned dates of India's past World Cup triumphs - which are the ODI World Cups in 1983 and 2011, and the T20 World Cup win in 2007 - behind the back of collar.&nbsp;

Ahead of the World Cup, Team India donned the jersey for the first time in five-match home series against Australia.&nbsp;

Besides, the team is also likely to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/orange-to-be-new-blue-team-india-to-sport-alternate-jersey-in-selected-world-cup-matches-224232">sport orange jerseys instead of the usual blue</a> in selected games, including the one against hosts England on June 30.&nbsp;

The jersey, which will be predominantly orange with a tinge of blue, will be unveiled during the course of the tournament.

"The BCCI marketing team is still working on the design and the jersey will be unveiled very soon," a BCCI source told PTI.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss in bright sunshine and elected to bat first. However, the clouds closed in and seamer Jasprit Bumrah (2-35) found prodigious movement in both directions to remove openers Hashim Amla (6) and Quinton de Kock (10) inside the first six overs.

Du Plessis (38) and Rassie van der Dussen (22) put on a patient 54 in 80 balls in a bid to rebuild the innings, but when the latter was bowled trying a reverse-sweep off Chahal (4-51), two more wickets fell in quick succession.

Chahal then bowled Du Plessis and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav trapped JP Duminy (3) leg before wicket as India's slow bowlers squeezed the run-rate and bamboozled the batsmen.

David Miller (31) and Andile Phehlukwayo (34) got starts but could not pass 50, while Chris Morris (42) and Kagiso Rabada (31 not out) put on 66 for the eighth wicket to ensure the side posted a score that gives them a chance.

The innings mirrored South Africa's World Cup campaign to date as their batsmen struggled to find form or fluency on wickets that were good for striking. They have lost their opening two matches to England and Bangladesh, while India are playing their first game.

India beat South Africa by six wickets in Cricket World Cup

Virat Kohli-led Team India will start their 2019 World Cup campaign against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/key-players-in-india-vs-south-africa-world-cup-clash-224311">South Africa today at Southampton</a>.&nbsp;

All the participating teams have played at least one match in the ongoing edition and now the 'Men in Blue' will begin their quest to win the World Cup for the third time.&nbsp;

South Africa, on the other hand, have had a disappointing start in the World Cup, losing both matches they have played so far. They lost to hosts England by 104 runs, then slipped to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday. &nbsp;

It couldn't get worse for captain Faf du Plessis after star pacers Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi suffered injuries. &nbsp;

Ngidi will back in the squad within the next 10 days but legendary fast bowler Steyn has been ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover from a&nbsp;shoulder injury.&nbsp;

India, however, are fresh and are all geared up for their campaign opener. &nbsp;

India will be&nbsp;starting their campaign late but skipper Virat Kohli termed it as team's "advantage" as the players are well aware of the conditions and pitch&nbsp;behaviour.&nbsp;

Conditions:&nbsp;

The forecast suggests that Southampton will be cloudy and there could be light showers but chances of a downpour are very less. However, it had rained here a day earlier, so the Indian cricket fans will be keeping their fingers crossed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Overall, the conditions suggest that it is going to be a batting-friendly match, similar to what we have seen in the last ODI contest at this venue&nbsp;between England and Pakistan in which 734 runs were scored in 100 overs.&nbsp;

Head-to-head:&nbsp;

India and South Africa's ODI rivalry has a long history considering the number of matches they have played together. &nbsp;

Both the team have played a total of 83 ODI matches, India have won 34 and South Africa has emerged victorious in 46 games.&nbsp;

Three matches have ended without any result.&nbsp;

In World Cups, both the teams have met four times and South Africa have won thrice. &nbsp;

But since 2012, India has defeated South Africa in all five ICC events (not bilateral series) they have played which includes the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy, in 2012 and 2014 World T20 and in the 2015 World Cup.&nbsp;

India will be starting their campaign late but skipper Virat Kohli termed it as team's "advantage" as the players are well aware of the conditions and pitch behaviour. Conditions: The forecast suggests that Southampton will be cloudy and there could be light showers but chances of a downpour are very less. However, it had rained here a day earlier, so the Indian cricket fans will be keeping their fingers crossed. Overall, the conditions suggest that it is going to be a batting-friendly match, similar to what we have seen in the last ODI contest at this venue between England and Pakistan in which 734 runs were scored in 100 overs. Head-to-head: India and South Africa's ODI rivalry has a long history considering the number of matches they have played together. Both the team have played a total of 83 ODI matches, India have won 34 and South Africa has emerged victorious in 46 games. Three matches have ended without any result. In World Cups, both the teams have met four times and South Africa have won thrice. But since 2012, India has defeated South Africa in all five ICC events (not bilateral series) they have played which includes the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy, in 2012 and 2014 World T20 and in the 2015 World Cup.

Dope control official took the pacer for conducting a test during the team's practice session at the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton.

There were a total of two sittings in the test. In the first round, Bumrah was taken for a urine test and after 45 minutes, the blood sample of the pacer was taken.

Under every ICC event, every Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) player has to undergo a doping test conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

A BCCI source confirmed that Bumrah was indeed taken for a doping test.

However, the source did not reveal whether any other player is scheduled to undergo a doping test.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said his struggling side could still reach the World Cup semi-finals, even after talisman paceman Dale Steyn was ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

The 35-year-old fast bowler had been battling to be fit in time for Wednesday's crucial clash against fancied India in Southampton after two defeats in two matches for South Africa.

But the seamer has been forced to admit defeat, leaving head coach Ottis Gibson's side short of firepower.

"Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future," Cricket South Africa said in a statement.

South Africa have called up left-arm pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as a replacement for the remainder of the tournament, with Lungi Ngidi also nursing a hamstring problem.

Paceman Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a thumb issue before the World Cup even started.

But Du Plessis said despite their injury problems and their poor start to the tournament, South Africa were aiming to reach the last four of the round-robin event, in which all 10 teams play each other.

"Six games is the target, and there's seven games left," the skipper told reporters during his pre-match press conference at the Ageas Bowl.

"It would be great if we could start that tomorrow. There's no easy games any more in the World Cup.... Whether it's winning or losing, the main thing is getting to the semi-finals."

South Africa, who have never won the World Cup, have endured a wretched start to the tournament, losing to hosts England by 104 runs then slipping to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday.

Top-order batsman Hashim Amla returns for the India game after missing the second match following a hit on the head during the tournament opener against England.

Stay positive

Du Plessis said he it was important to stay "strong and positive" despite the challenge of working with limited resources.

"Naturally, guys will have a little bit of confidence that's been chucked away and that is normal, that is part of being human," he said.

Hendricks will arrive on Wednesday but will not be available to face India.

Du Plessis said he hoped Steyn's international career was not at an end.

"It's been a tough two-and-half years for him, and he would need support right now," he said. "The team and management will put things in place to look after him. He needs love at the moment, he tried really hard to get fit for this campaign."

Du Plessis admitted South Africa's injury problems had forced him to draw up a new plan.

"I think we'll really have to look at that now, there's only 14 players to pick from now. There's not a lot of options for the bowling attack," he said.

"You have to decide whether you go with all your all-rounders in your team, bat deep and try to get a big score."

India skipper Virat Kohli also sympathised with Steyn and wished his Indian Premier League teammate, for Royal Challengers Bangalore, a "speedy recovery".

South Africa can still reach World Cup semis without Steyn, says Faf Du Plessis

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/people-expect-century-but-my-focus-is-on-victory-says-virat-kohli-ahead-of-south-africa-clash-224280">Virat Kohli</a> will embark on the most defining journey of his international career, carrying the hopes of more than a billion when he leads India against an injury-hit South Africa in their World Cup opener here Wednesday.&nbsp;

Kohli is one of the best batsmen of this era but this edition of the World Cup will define his legacy as a leader, an aspect on which the jury is still out despite some heady achievements in the Test arena.&nbsp;

The current team does have potent match-winners with the skipper himself being the biggest of them all but it still misses the aura, the 'class of 2011' under Mahendra Singh Dhoni had.&nbsp;

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh were in a different league with the support cast comprising Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina and a young Kohli.&nbsp;

But this team, led by Kohli and mentored by Dhoni, has had its share of good results and six wins in nine games would ensure a smooth passage into the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Two years of investment has gone into building a potent ODI squad, something that started right after the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss against Pakistan.&nbsp;

The 'Men In Blue' have had adequate rest. All other teams have already played two games each and they can't wait to kick-start their campaign with a commanding performance.&nbsp;

The first match in a tournament of such vast magnitude is always important and South Africa's confidence will be at its lowest following back-to-back defeats against England and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

To make matters worse, senior speedster Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury and has been replaced by left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is also out for at least tomorrow's game with a hamstring strain. Hashim Amla got a nasty hit on the helmet off Jofra Archer's short ball against England in the opening game.&nbsp;

The clash couldn't possibly have been more well-timed as India have a chance to hold the Proteas by the scruff of their neck when they are seemingly at their weakest.&nbsp;

However, a cornered opponent is always a dangerous proposition and head coach Ravi Shastri, a shrewd tactician by all means, will be surely making the players aware of the consequences of taking their foot off the pedal.&nbsp;

The pitch at the Ageas Bowl stadium in Southampton, devoid of grass cover, is expected to be a batting-friendly but Kohli will have a few points to ponder upon as the weather forecast on match day indicates cloud cover with intermittent shower.&nbsp;

Will the third seamer in Bhuvneshwar Kumar come into the picture? Does Ravindra Jadeja's warm-up matches' form get more credence than Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's 22-month show in tandem? Does Kedar Jadhav fit in without playing a single game for a month or Vijay Shankar gets a look in?&nbsp;

These are some of the pressing questions that skipper Kohli needs to address going into the first game.
There's no doubt that the Proteas are badly hit by poor form and injuries but it may just take one fiery spell from Kagiso Rabada to straighten things up.&nbsp;

A bit of help from the weather conditions with his scorching pace and ability to move the ball, Rabada could just unsettle the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who haven't had the best of times during the past few months.&nbsp;

Both are capable of turning the match on its head but they could be short on confidence due to lack of runs since the start of the away ODIs against Australia.&nbsp;

Rohit's apparent weakness against leg-spinners could be exploited by rival captain Faf du Plessis, who can again think of giving the new ball to Imran Tahir.&nbsp;

KL Rahul is expected to take the No. 4 slot but it needs to be seen as to how well he performs when the condition are nippy. Dhoni at No 5 will be the stabilising factor and if he bats like the Bangladesh warm-up game, he can be a nightmare for the Proteas attack.&nbsp;

But what will be a bigger worry for Du Plessis will be the batting where AB de Villiers' absence has surely had an impact. The poor technique of Proteas batsmen against slow bowlers have been time and again exposed and 20 overs of quality spin bowling could be too hot to handle for the South Africans.

In all, it's advantage for&nbsp;India at Southampton.

Let the action begin: Mighty India face low on confidence South Africa

South Africa's troubles compounded after young fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the team's next World Cup game against India here Wednesday.&nbsp;

Ngidi had suffered a left hamstring injury during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-south-africa-by-21-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-223723">team's defeat against Bangladesh on Sunday</a> and hobbled out of the field bowling only four overs.

"Ngidi suffered a sharp discomfort in his left hamstring. We decided he had a hamstring strain. He will be out for at least week to 10 days," team doctor Mohammed Moosajee told the media persons after the match against Bangladesh at the Oval.

"He will have a scan tomorrow and hopefully ready for the West Indies game."
Ngidi has had injury issues having missed IPL due to a side strain while playing a home series against Sri Lanka.

Ngidi's ideal replacement should be Dale Steyn provided he gets fit in time. Steyn bowled a couple of overs in the nets but there is still no clarity on his availability for the India game.

If Steyn doesn't make it, all-rounder Chris Morris could possibly be an ideal replacement candidate.

There was however some positive news for the Proteas as senior batsman Hashim Amla seems to have recovered from the concussions suffered after being hit in the helmet by Jofra Archer.

"The plan is to have him ready for the India game in Southampton. His initial reports on concussion was inconclusive. The next test showed he could bat. However he felt some symptoms and was rested for the Bangladesh game," Moosajee said.

Eight-time Olympic champions India's only glory at the World Cup came way back in 1975 when Ajit Pal Singh and his men's created history for the past masters of the game.&nbsp;

In the last 10 editions since its maiden triumph in 1975, India's best performance was a fifth-place finish at the 1982 edition in Mumbai (then Bombay).&nbsp;
