The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (November 13) confirmed Rohit Sharma will miss the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa after a hamstring injury. Rohit pulled his left hamstring while training in Mumbai and has been replaced by India A batter Priyank Panchal, who recently led the India A team on their tour of South Africa.

Rohit's absence will be a huge blow for team India in the Test series which is set to get underway from December 26 in Centurion. The three-match Test series will be followed by as many ODIs against the Proteas. Reacting to Panchal's selection as Rohit's replacement for the SA Test series, former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra said he was quite surprised.

Chopra was left baffled to see Panchal getting the nod ahead of Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was part of India's squad for the England tour earlier this year but didn't get a chance as Rohit opened the batting with Shubman Gill. Chopra said he is failing to understand the selection process as there is no clarity.

"Abhimanyu Easwaran had gone to England. He was a part of the Indian team and was kept as the backup opener. But now he is not the backup opener. It is like Akkad bakkad bambe bo - that's the feeling that you get because there is no clarity," said the former India cricketer in a video on his YouTube channel.

"There is a twist in the story, that begs a question to be asked that what is happening in this world? Now it seems Priyank Panchal is the backup opener, which is surprising," he added.

Easwaran was India's second-highest run-getter behind Hanuma Vihari with 205 runs from three matches against South Africa A on the team's recent tour. However, he has been pipped by Panchal, who Chopra believes is not a bad choice but his selection is unfair on Easwaran.

"Let me be honest, Priyank Panchal is not a bad choice - in fact when you saw Rohit Sharma playing as a Test opener, then also there was supposed to be a choice Priyank Panchal and Abhimanyu Easwaran but then Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri thought of opening with Rohit. Rohit started to open and Priyank Panchal and Abhimanyu Easwaran didn't get a chance at all," said Chopra.

In what comes as a huge blow for India ahead of their upcoming tour of South Africa later this month, vice-captain Rohit Sharm has been ruled out of the three-match Test series due to an injury. Rohit suffered a hamstring injury while training at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, where he had been practising for the past week.

India are scheduled to tour South Africa later this month for a three-match Test series followed by as many ODIs. The first Test will get underway from January 26 in Centurion followed by the next two encounters in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively.

Rohit has suffered a serious injury and his participation in the ODI series as well remains in doubt. He had been appointed as India's new ODI captain and Test vice-captain last week, replacing Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane respectively.

While it is not certain who will take over as the vice-captain in Tests in Rohit's absence, India A captain Priyank Panchal has been named as his replacement. Panchal recently led India A on their tour of South Africa for three unofficial Test matches against South Africa A.

"Team India Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma sustained a left hamstring injury during his training session here in Mumbai yesterday. He has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa. Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad," BCCI stated in a press release.

The Indian team is scheduled to leave for South Africa on December 16 and Rohit will not take part in the three-match Test series. The newly-appointed vice-captain had recently missed the two-match Test series against New Zealand at home due to workload management.

In his absence, Mayank Agarwal is likely to be the first-choice designated opener along with Shubman Gill. Panchal, who opened against South Africa A, can also be tried out as an opener against the hosts. Nonetheless, Rohit's absence will be a big miss for India as he had been in sublime form in Test cricket of late and had performed exceptionally well in England earlier this year.

Rohit Sharma ruled out of upcoming Test series against South Africa, Priyank Panchal named replacement

Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has urged the selectors to pick in-form batter Ruturaj Gaikwad in India's ODI squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. India are scheduled to play a three-match Test series followed by three ODIs in South Africa with the tour starting from December 26. Vengsarkar feels Gaikwad has scored enough runs and deserves a spot in the ODI team.

Gaikwad was instrumental in helping Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lift their fourth IPL title this season. He finished as the highest run-getter of IPL 2021 with 635 runs in 16 matches and has continued his purple patch in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Gaikwad is currently the leading run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 435 runs in just four matches including three centuries.

He has been knocking at the selectors' door for a while now and is likely to be selected in the ODI squad having already made his T20I debut earlier this year. Vengsarkar believes the 24-year-old should be picked straight away and given a proper run in the ODI series against South Africa.

"You must pick a man in form. How many more runs does he need to score to prove himself? It is high time the selectors pick him straight away and give him a proper opportunity," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying in an interview by Times of India.

Vengsarkar believes Gaikwad should be given an opportunity straight away against South Africa as he is 24 and has already proven himself with incredible consistency. The former India cricketer believes the youngster can also play at no.3 if not as an opener.

"He (Gaikwad) can bat at No 3 also. He must be accommodated in the team. It's not like Ruturaj 18 or 19. He's 24 now. There's no point in picking him when he'll be 28," said Vengsarkar.

India's newly-appointed ODI captain Rohit Sharma has injured himself ahead of the start of the South Africa tour and has been ruled out of the Test series. He also remains in doubt to take part in the ODI series. In case, Rohit fails to recover in time for the ODIs, Gaikwad might be tested as an opener against South Africa.

South Africa's Quinton De Kock to miss final two Tests vs India due to paternity leave: Report

Venkatesh Iyer's rise has been a phenomenal one. He is one of the most exciting youngsters in Indian cricket at present and has already made his T20 debut for the country after impressing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Iyer is in line to make his ODI debut after playing T20Is for India and is likely to be named in the ODI squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.

Iyer had played an instrumental role in helping KKR reach the final of IPL 2021 with his splendid performances in the second leg of the tournament in UAE. In his debut campaign in the IPL, Iyer scored 370 runs and picked up 3 wickets in the tournament and has continued his purple patch in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy where he is currently the second-highest run-getter of the tournament with 348 runs from four matches so far.

With Hardik Pandya currently recovering from his injury at the National Cricket Academy, selectors are certain to pick Iyer as an all-rounder in India's ODI squad for the South Africa series, as per a report in PTI. Besides his explosive batting, Iyer has also been impressive with the ball in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has eight wickets to his name in four matches in the tournament.

"Venkatesh is surely going to South Africa. He is bowling 9 or 10 overs in every game and with Hardik still recuperating, it is the best time to give him chance and get him battle-ready for the bigger events ahead," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

While he is an opening batter, Iyer is likely to be used in the middle-order for India and can be groomed as a finisher looking forward to the T20 World Cup next year and the ODI World Cup in 2023. With captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul set to continue as openers and Ishan Kishan also in the fray, Iyer will have to adapt to middle-order.

"The new team management absolutely did the right thing in advising him to bat in the middle order. As of now, if he doesn't get injured, Venkatesh is a certainty for the South Africa one-dayers," said the BCCI source.

Apart from Iyer, another youngster who is in contention to feature in the ODI squad is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been absolutely bossing it with the bat in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy after a stellar IPL 2021 season where he bagged the Orange Cap for being the highest run-getter of the tournament.

While Gaikwad has been knocking at the selectors' door for a while now, the right-hander might still be behind Shikhar Dhawan in the pecking order. Dhawan is likely to get a few chances in the ODI series against South Africa before he is sidelined for someone like Gaikwad.

"Technically, last time India played 50-over series, Dhawan was leading India and also had a match-winning knock in Sri Lanka," the BCCI source told PTI.

"He has the ability to score runs just when he has back to the wall. So while Gaikwad should be there in the squad, I think selectors might give one last chance to Dhawan, maybe take him and give him a game or two," he added.

Venkatesh Iyer set for ODI debut, likely to be named in squad for South Africa tour - Report

Hanuma Vihari was dropped from India's Test squad for the recently-concluded two-match series against New Zealand at home. The middle-order batter, who was last seen in action for Team India on the tour of Australia last year, was sent to South Africa with India A side to take part in the unofficial Test series against South Africa A.

However, Vihari is now back in the squad for India's upcoming tour of South Africa later this month. Team India will play three Tests in the rainbow nation starting from December 26. With Shreyas Iyer impressing in the middle-order in his debut Test series against the Kiwis, the Indian team management is set to face a selection headache.

Both Vihari and Iyer are in contention to feature in the middle-order against South Africa and it remains to be seen who will make the cut in the playing XI for the first Test. Ahead of the tour, former India chief selector MSK Prasad has weighed in on the debate and said Vihari deserved a place in the squad for the New Zealand series at home instead of being sent with the India A team.

"First, of all, he was deserving of a place in the squad for the New Zealand series at home. I think since he was not going to get an opportunity, they would have sent him for India A tour. Now in the 2nd unofficial Test, he has hit two (three) half-centuries. Yes, having somebody who has done well in away series in England, Australia and West Indies. If you are looking at a youngster, then Hanuma Vihari should be played," Prasad was quoted as saying by India Today.

Vihari showcased great form in the series against South Africa A and slammed three consecutive fifties. He has done well overseas for Team India and can also send down a few overs if required. However, Prasad believes the selection will depend on the conditions and what role the Indian team management is expecting the two batters to play in the Test series.

"A lot depends on what they are expecting from the player, the role he is going to play. Hanuma Vihari is a guy who is solid in his technique. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer is someone who can bring in a little aggression," explained Prasad.

"So it all depends on the batting order and what kind of role that the team management expects of their middle-order batter. Based on that, one of them can be given an opportunity," he added.

Hanuma Vihari or Shreyas Iyer? MSK Prasad gives his take on middle-order conundrum ahead of SA series

Ishant Sharma's Test career is likely to be cut short after India's upcoming tour of South Africa. The senior pacer is currently one of the most experienced campaigners in the Indian squad and has been spearheading the Indian pace attack for a while now, however, his recent struggles have seen him drop down in the pecking order.

With the emergence of young pacers like Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini among others, Ishant's future in the longest format faces uncertainty going ahead. While he has been sidelined in white-ball cricket, the 33-year-old has been a regular in Tests and has already played 105 Test matches for India with 311 wickets under his belt.

However, he is expected to remain under the scanner during the South Africa tour along with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, as per a report in The Indian Express. While Pujara and Rahane might see their Test careers get extended if they manage to perform well and present a strong case for themselves, the South Africa series is expected to be the last for Ishant in Team India's jersey.

“Rahane’s removal as vice-captain is a clear warning signal to him. As a senior member in the side, he needs to contribute more. Same is true for Pujara also. He too has been around for a long time and now the team expects him to play those crucial knocks in big games," a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"In case they score and have a significant impact on the series, they might be able to extend their Test careers. But in the case of Ishant, this could be it,” he added.

Ishant was last seen in action during India's first Test of the home series against New Zealand in Kanpur this month where he went wicket-less in the first innings after bowling 15 overs. He bowled only seven overs in the second innings and remained without a wicket.

The veteran pacer was replaced by Siraj for the second and final Test of the series. The youngster went on to impress as he picked up a three-wicket haul in New Zealand's first innings to inflict a collapse against the visitors and help India script a massive win by 372 runs in the game.

It remains to be seen how will the selectors and the team management deal with Ishant's struggles and if the South Africa series will actually be his last for the national team.

Rohit Sharma replaces Ajinkya Rahane as India's vice-captain as BCCI announce 18-man squad for SA Tests

Ajinkya Rahane is expected to keep his place in the Indian team but whether he would remain vice-captain remains to be seen when the selectors announce the Test squad for tour of South Africa on Wednesday.

It is learnt that announcement of ODI squad could be delayed as the first match is on January 19 and the sensitive issue of Virat Kohli's future as white-ball leader is at stake.

However, Rahane, whose place in the playing XI is under doubt, will find it difficult to retain his vice-captaincy after 12 consecutive failures that led the team management to dropping him from the Mumbai Test on the pretext of hamstring niggles.

If Rahane is stripped of Test vice-captaincy, senior batter Rohit Sharma is the front runner for the job.

Similarly, Ishant Sharma, who has played more than 100 Test matches, doesn't look the force to reckon with anymore and he might not fit in the team, whether it's a three or four-pronged pace attack that India may use.

The likes of Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan may join Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav.

With Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and in-form Hanuma Vihari set for the middle order, one between Priyank Panchal or Abhimanyu Easwaran could be the back up No. 3 for Cheteshwar Pujara.

Ajinkya Rahane's vice captaincy, Ishant Sharma's place in doubt in India's Test team for South Africa tour

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been a subject of discussion for long. The two senior pros have been in poor form for quite sometime and the criticism over the duo has grown in recent times, due to the emergence of other options in the middle-order such as Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, etc.

Ahead of the South Africa tour opener, where Virat Kohli & Co. will play three Tests and equal number of ODIs, veteran keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik feels both Pujara and Rahane will manage to feature in the first Test. For the unversed, Pujara hasn't managed a triple-figure knock since early 2019 whereas Rahane has only two fifty-plus knocks since his last Test ton, which came in late 2020 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia Down Under.

Prior to India's first Test versus Dean Elgar-led SA, Karthik told on Cricbuzz, "This whole group of KL Rahul, Rohit and Mayank will be the three openers, followed by Pujara, Rahane and Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill will be the batters. Don't know what will happen to Hanuma Vihari. Ideally, he should have been part of the squad, but it's sad that he had to go and play for India A. Are they going to fit him in when he comes back to the squad? Because everyone here has done enough to hold on to their places.

"Even the ones getting 30s and 40s, which cannot be undervalued, have looked set on tough wickets. Kanpur and Mumbai were not easy wickets. They applied themselves and played good shots. So where does a Vihari fit in that's an important question. Has Iyer done enough to come and take over Vihari's place."

He further asserted "Another man there who is hanging on by the skin of the teeth is Rahane. He is the vice-captain and has done phenomenally well as a captain. Where does he stand? But knowing Rahul Dravid, he will go with the tried and tested method of going with Pujara and Rahane to start with and then when things unfold he will allow it to unravel and makes changes necessary. All these guys will be on the plane to South Africa and will be in the XI as well. Don't see too many changes as well, maybe one odd change."

India will play the first Test versus South Africa in Centurion on December 26. It will be followed by the two Tests and three ODIs in the African nation. Talking about both Rahane and Pujara, time is running for the senior pros to hold onto their respective spots and the forthcoming Tests will be a do-or-die series for them.

R Ashwin returned with the Player-of-the-Series in the just-concluded India-New Zealand Test series at home. The 35-year-old ended with 14 wickets and also contributed with the bat. For the unversed, Ashwin was also the Player-of-the-Series when England toured India and played four Tests in early 2021.

Back then, Ashwin scored a century and accounted for as many as 32 scalps in the series. Despite his heroics, Ashwin wasn't part of India's playing XI in the away Tests versus England, in the United Kingdom, in mid-2021. Hence, former England pacer Steve Harmison says he won't be surprised if Ashwin once again doesn't play in India's forthcoming Tests versus South Africa, in the African nation, as he has often not been preferred in the line-up in away Tests.

Harmison said in a video shared on his Youtube channel, "The problem I find in predicting this Indian side is there's logic and then there's Kohli's idea of what the team should be. Who on earth would have thought that Ashwin would have missed so much cricket against England? You can never what Virat wants what he is trying or his thinking process is. You would think the two young guys in Iyer and Agarwal would be going to South Africa on the back of scoring 100s in this series, it wouldn't surprise me if Rahane and Pujara play, and wouldn't surprise me if Ashwin doesn't play."

He added, "Jadeja is important for this team with Pant at No. 6 and 7. Even though Axar can bat and so can Ashwin. But Jadeja bats nicely at 7 and I still think there is room for one more spinner. The skill level for Ashwin is as good as any seam bowler would bowl on any seam-friendly wicket. But this guy is so skillful, so meticulous and can create so much pressure that even your fourth seamer cannot be as threatening as R Ashwin. And then you pick your three fast bowlers, which for me would be Shami, Bumrah and Siraj."

Former India batter VVS Laxman wants Team India to not play vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane in the first Test of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa. India is all set to travel to South Africa later this month for a full-fledged tour consisting of three Tests and three ODIs. The tour was scheduled to begin on December 17 but had to be postponed due to Omicron threat.

The three-match Test series will now kick off from December 26 with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. Rahane, who is going through a rough patch in his Test career for a while now, continued to struggle in the recently-concluded series against New Zealand as he failed to get among the runs.

Laxman believes Rahane should make way for Shreyas Iyer, who made a fantastic debut with a century and a half-century in his debut game for India against the Kiwis. Iyer did well in the middle-order and is breathing down Rahane's neck to take his spot in the batting line-up. Laxman feels continuity is important and that Iyer should be given a long rope.

"According to me, Ajinkya Rahane cannot play in the first match. Continuity is very important, so I will play Shreyas Iyer because if you give someone two Test matches and the way he batted on debut under pressure," Laxman said on Star Sports.

"He scored a century and a half-century, so I will give that continuity, the confidence that you want to give to a young batsman, I will definitely give that," added the former India batter.

With Laxman backing Iyer's inclusion in the squad, it remains to be seen if Rahane will continue to be a regular in the playing XI for Team India in the South Africa Test series. Some reports have suggested that Rohit Sharma is likely to replace Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test team ahead of the South Africa tour.

India tour of South Africa: CSA shares updated schedule, series to kick-off with Boxing Day Test in Centurion

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh weighed in on the performance of Ajinkya Rahane, who is going through a lean patch in his career. The former spin legend has also named a replacement of Test vice-captain, claiming it to be the "perfect solution" for Team India.

The 33-year-old has been facing criticism for his recent performances as he has hit just one century and a couple of fifties in the last 16 Tests. His average has also declined.

If we talk about his performance in 2020, he scored 272 runs in four matches he played and in 2021, he scored 407 runs from 12 Tests he has played. In India vs New Zealand Test in Kapur, his performance was criticised as he scored 35 in the first innings and four runs in the second.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed that India's tour of South Africa will proceed with the revised dates and itinerary amid fears due to the emergence of a new coronavirus (COVID-19) variant Omicron. BCCI confirms India tour of South Africa to go ahead without T20s, with revised dates and itinerary

Rohit Sharma looks set to take over as the new vice-captain of the Indian Test team after being appointed as the skipper of the T20I side. Rohit is in line to replace Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain in Tests for India's upcoming tour of South Africa. BCCI has confirmed that the tour will go ahead despite the Omicron threat in the country.

COVID-19 cases in South Africa have surged after the emergence of the Omicron variant but BCCI and Cricket South Africa have decided to go ahead with the tour. The tour is all set to begin on December 26 but will only consist of three Tests and as many ODIs as the four-match T20I series has been postponed to a later date.

Rohit is likely to be announced as the new vice-captain of the Test team when the squad for the South Africa series is announced. Rohit is currently not part of India's ongoing two-match Test series against New Zealand at home as he was rested but the senior batter reportedly had a big say in the hosts' squad selection.

“The selection meeting will happen in a few days. It is likely that Rohit will be made the vice-captain of the Test team. The Indian team is committed to travel to South Africa. However, the tour will not go on as per schedule. BCCI has communicated to Cricket South Africa (CSA) that it could start the tour with the Boxing Day Test,” a top BCCI official was quoted saying by Times of India.

The move was reportedly on the cards for a while considering the dip in Rahane's performances of late. While he has been completely sidelined from white-ball cricket, Rahane has failed to perform consistently for India in the longest format as well and has struggled massively.

Rahane averages just around 36 in Tests in the last five years and had failed to deliver during India's tour of England earlier this year where he managed to amass only 109 runs in seven innings. His struggles continued in the ongoing New Zealand series as the experienced right-hander scored only 39 runs in two innings before missing the ongoing second Test due to an injury.

Omicron threat: Ahead of India series, Cricket South Africa postpones domestic games

The spread of the Omicron coronavirus (COVID-19) variant has cautioned the authorities globally as it is said to be the most worrying Covid variant since delta because of the large number of mutations. Several countries have already imposed travel bans on some of the southern African nations. Not just international travel, sport also has been impacted. Events in South Africa began to shut down last week due to Omicron as rugby teams and golfers scrambled to leave the country.

Amid the new variant scare, India's tour of South Africa for a three-Test series, followed by three one-day internationals (ODI) and four Twenty20 matches might get pushed back by a week. The Test series is scheduled to start on December 17 in Johannesburg. It is expected that the Indian cricketers will know the decision in the next few days whether the tour will go ahead or not.

Virat Kohli provides update on South Africa tour amid Omicron threat, says players are seeking 'clarity'

The Sourav Ganguly-led Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put the national selection committee's meeting on hold with regard to India's upcoming tour of South Africa. This was been done due to the threat posed by the new Covid variant, named the 'Omicron' in the African nation which is being closely monitored. With uncertainty looming large with respect to the travel restrictions worldwide, the BCCI has decided that it is wise to delay the announcement of the Indian squad for the upcoming tour.

According to a TOI report, BCCI is awaiting an approval from the Indian government before sending the team to the African country. Following the emergence of the new variant, South Africa has been named as an 'At-risk' country. Hence, while the situation might not have gone out of hand as yet, it is now a wait-and-watch scenario with regard to the SA tour.

As per the original schedule, Virat Kohli-led Team India are scheduled to board the flight to South Africa immediately after the conclusion of the second Test versus New Zealand in Mumbai, which is slated to end by December 7. However, the new Covid variant has put everything on hold. Thus, it remains to be seen if the BCCI will stick to the original schedule or tweak it a bit.

For the unversed, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah -- who have been rested for the ongoing NZ Tests -- were initially asked to enter a mandatory quarantine in Mumbai from December 3. However, as per reports, they are yet to receive a clear itinerary. Hence, the confusion prevails.

TOI also reports that the series might also be rescheduled in the given scenario. "Until the players get a reply from the BCCI, confusion will prevail because nobody knows anything. But if you look at the statement that's been released by a ministerial department of the government of South Africa, it emphasizes on the security process and thanks BCCI for the deep relationship the two countries have shared. That's their way of saying, 'come and we'll take care'. The ball is now in BCCI's court," sources privy to developments told TOI.

India's last tour of SA was held in early 2018, when Kohli & Co. played three Tests, six ODIs and three T20Is in the rainbow nation. Back then, India had lost the Tests 1-2 but won the ODIs and T20Is convincingly.

For now, it remains to be seen what will be the final decision regarding their forthcoming tour of SA amid the Omicron threat.

The new COVID-19 variant is said to be mutating at a faster rate and can wreak havoc if not controlled. Team India are scheduled to tour South Africa next month for a full-fledged series consisting of three Tests, three ODIs and four T20Is against the Proteas. However, there remains uncertainty over the tour amid threat from the new variant of the virus. The Test series between the two sides is scheduled to get underway from December 17. With several countries across the world imposing travel restrictions on South Africa, India's cricket tour is also in danger. The top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to meet on Saturday to discuss the road ahead and the fate of the tour as the new variant of COVID-19 might soon lead to the suspension of all sports in South Africa. "Yes it (the new Covid variant) is point of concern and we are having meeting with officials to discuss the roadmap of India tour to South Africa also about India A team which is already there," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by India Today. "We will first talk to our officials about it and then will talk to Cricket South Africa to understand the situation and accordingly will take a call. We are already in touch with concerned authorities and keeping close track," added the source. India A are currently on a tour to South Africa for three unofficial Test matches. While the first game between India A and South Africa A ended in a draw on Friday, the second unofficial Test is all set to get underway from November 29. "It is too early to comment on that but yes safety and security of players is paramount. Let us meet first and talk to the South Africa board, As of now there is nothing to worry about, we are in constant touch with players and team management there," the source told India Today. COVID-19 had led to indefinite suspension of all sorts of sporting events across the world last year when the virus first made its presence felt globally.

India tour of South Africa 2021-22: 3rd Test moved to Cape Town from Johannesburg

Not many had hopes from MS Dhoni-led Team India when they commenced their journey in the inaugural T20 World Cup, in South Africa in 2007. However, Dhoni & Co. created history and stunned the cricketing fraternity by winning the inaugural title, beating Pakistan in the tournament-finale in Johannesburg on September 24.

The Men in Blue defeated the likes of England, South Africa, Australia and Pakistan (twice) to be crowned as the T20 WC champions in the 2007 edition and will now hope to win their second title when the upcoming T20 World Cup starts in the UAE, from October 19.

Ahead of the mega event and IPL 14's final leg, in the UAE, Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s Robin Uthappa recalled a master move from Dhoni during the 2007 T20 WC clash between India and South Africa. Both sides had locked horns in the Super Eight stage, which was a virtual quarter-final, where India beat the Proteas by 37 runs to book a place in the semis.

Recalling how Dhoni planned Graeme Smith's dismissal, Uthappa told on the 22 Yarns With Gaurav Kapoor podcast recently, "Just the ball before (Graeme Smith's dismissal)... , MS Dhoni moved (Dinesh) Karthik from third slip to a fielding position between fourth slip and gully. The very next ball the DK took that catch. It's nuts. I don't know how he(MS Dhoni) does that. I think he is one guy who is truest to his instincts."

Uthappa also spoke regarding the last over of the 2007 T20 WC, where Joginder Sharma defended 13 runs versus Pakistan to lead India to a memorable win. "The choice was between Joginder Sharma and Harbhajan Singh for the last over. At the time, Joginder put his hand up, and MS also backed his instinct and gave the ball to the one who wanted to bowl. That's what Mahi did the whole tournament, he just backed his instincts. Joginder was obviously nervous."

"Sreesanth had astigmatism and the lens we got in 2007 wasn't of great quality at that time. We were just hoping that Sreesanth wore his lens as he used to drop catches when not wearing. But it was all destiny, the way he took that catch," he added.

While there were debates on selectorial issues ahead of the series as the Indian Women's team didn't pick the likes of Shikha Pandey, Shafali Verma, Taniya Bhatia among a few others, the women's team didn't live up to the expectations and were dominated and outplayed by the South Africa Women's team led by Sune Luus.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made “any commitment” to tour South Africa for a three-match T20I series in August end, Board treasurer Arun Dhumal on Friday stated while denying Cricket South Africa’s claims of confirmation from the Indian board. Dhumal further said that there have only been discussions about a T20I series but with no commitment.

"When South Africa's tour of India got cancelled due to coronavirus, we had discussions that if there is a possibility, we will make an effort to tour South Africa. But at no point have we made any commitment to Cricket South Africa about touring in August," Dhumal told PTI.

The senior BCCI official further said that BCCI won’t make any commitment to any country unless the government gives them nod for international travel.

"Right now, we can't even commit that we can tour Sri Lanka in July followed by (short T20 series) in Zimbabwe. Both these tours are part of the FTP programme and we are still not sure what the situation will be in two months, so how can we commit on South Africa tour?" Dhumal asked.

On Smith’s support to Ganguly for becoming the ICC chairman, Dhumal said it would be better for global cricket if an Indian is in charge.

"There has been no formal discussion in BCCI about ICC chairmanship. Graeme Smith obviously spoke in his personal capacity which is not CSA''s stand," he said.

"As far as the BCCI is concerned we would certainly like an Indian to lead the global body and our president has credentials obviously. But again we haven't yet discussed it," Dhumal said.

"We will definitely play SA series but there should be riders. Is CSA with India on ICC policy matters? With Chris (Nenzani), you would want a full commitment on paper and then proceed.

"It's CSA which is desperate for a three-match T20. So they have to decide how they want to play it at the ICC," the veteran official said.
