This was his fifth time hosting the awards and he cracked scathing jokes about Hollywood's elite that got both laughs and disapproving looks from the A-list audience.</p>

<p>Gervais, known for his no-holds-barred style of comedy, joked about Hollywood's lack of diversity, film producer Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused by more than 80 women of sexual misconduct, and the suicide of financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.</p>

<p>"Let's have a laugh at your expense," Gervais said at the start of his opening monologue, in which he vowed that the ceremony would be his last time hosting. "Remember we're all gonna die soon. And there's no sequel."</p>

<p>Gervais last hosted the Globes four years ago, before the #MeToo and #OscarsSoWhite movements shined a spotlight on the underrepresentation of women and minorities in Hollywood.</p>

<p>He said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Golden Globes, had planned to have a segment honoring celebrities who died in 2019, "but when I saw the list of people who died, it wasn't diverse enough."</p>

Weinstein himself is unlikely to testify.<br />

His defense team has been trying to undermine the allegations of the two accusers on the charge sheet since long before the start of the trial.<br />

They have produced emails and text messages which they say show that both remained in friendly contact with the accused for several months after the alleged events.<br />

Known for his impatience and quick temper, Weinstein changed lawyers several times before settling on Donna Rotunno, a Chicago attorney who has successfully defended dozens of men accused of sexual assault and harassment.<br />
<br />
She has said that her client will be exonerated.<br />

Weinstein has always maintained that his sexual relationships were consensual but has apologized for behavior that he concedes "has caused a lot of pain."<br />

He sparked an outcry just weeks before the trial by appearing indignant in an interview with the New York Post tabloid when he moaned that he should be recognized for "pioneering" women-led films.<br />

Pattinson prefers to shake himself up physically right before performing an intense scene. For the movie `The Lighthouse`, as the actor recalls, he had to smack himself in the face and gag on mud in order to get into the character of a lighthouse worker who slowly goes insane.</p>

<p>From start to finish, fluid camerawork follows two young British soldiers tasked with crossing enemy lines to stop another battalion from launching an imminent attack on what appear to be retreating German troops but is really a trap.</p>

<p>Made to look as if it is one continuous shot, the drama, set during a single day in April 1917, aims to tell the story in real-time, immersing the audience in the mission of protagonists Blake and Schofield.</p>

<p>That meant lengthy rehearsals and super-long takes for the cast, led by Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay and including Colin Firth, Andrew Scott and Benedict Cumberbatch.</p>

<p>"When things went wrong we started again and sometimes that was very frustrating ... There were a few moments when I thought why have I done this to myself," Mendes told Reuters.</p>

<p>"A little bit of accidents is a good thing. You had your weather and light changes all the time ... animals, babies ... mud ... The men kept slipping over. But sometimes you want that in there. You want the reality of the physical exhaustion of what they're going through."</p>

<p>Last month, Mendes told a movie theatre audience in Los Angeles he chose this unusual storytelling technique because he wanted viewers "to feel like they were being pulled forward rather than being presented with information".</p>

<p>"We had over a mile of trenches that we dug because we couldn't repeat anything, we could never go back," he said.</p>

<p>Chapman (Blake) and MacKay (Schofield) rehearsed every scene on location for months, he added.</p>

<p>"The time we did start filming we unconsciously knew the steps and really the whole filmmaking process was about choreographing almost like a dance between the actors, the camera, the set," Chapman told Reuters in London.</p>

<p>"Walking at a crouch trying to hold the tension of the scene emotionally, the focus, and also just slipping all over the place - what we were doing was a drop in the ocean compared to what the men went through," MacKay added.</p>

<p>British-born Mendes, known for "American Beauty" and James Bond films 'Skyfall'&nbsp;and 'Spectre', has said '1917'&nbsp;was inspired by his grandfather's experiences on the frontlines of World War One.</p>

He said that he had an intuition of some romance between Emma Watson and Tom Felton as he said, “Yeah, I could. There was always something.
