BCCI's new central contracts: Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah top earners, Rahane, Pujara & Hardik demoted - Report

Suresh Raina wasn't retained by the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, he was still expected to attract few bids in the two-day auction affair in Bengaluru, held last month. Nonetheless, the veteran player didn't fetch a single bid in the auction proceedings as the CSK franchise didn't try to bring him back in their setup whereas no other team showed interest in acquiring his services.

After England's swashbuckling opener Jason Roy recently withdrew from the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, citing bio-bubble fatigue, many thought the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) would acquire Raina's services as a replacement for Roy. Nonetheless, as per sources, these reports aren't true.

However with everything going on in the world over the last 3 years it's added up and taken it's toll on me. I feel it's only right I spend some time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading into a very busy year. I will be following each game of the Titans and backing them to lift the trophy in their first year of the tournament."

Roy was roped in by the Gujarat franchise for INR 20 million (INR 2 crore) in the mega auction.

Former CSK star Suresh Raina not in consideration for Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022: Sources

Hardik Pandya has been out of action since the 2021 T20 World Cup, held in the UAE. Since then, the 28-year-old all-rounder is out of contention and is striving hard to regain full fitness to reclaim the all-rounder's slot in Team India setup across formats.

Hardik will next be seen in action during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition, where he will represent the Gujarat Titans (GT). The swashbuckling all-rounder will represent his home franchise as the captain. Along with showcasing his skills as captain, Hardik will be eager to don the all-rounder's role and perform with aplomb for a comeback into the national side. For now, he was been replaced by Venkatesh Iyer in the white-ball formats. Iyer has also grown as a T20I player over the past month and is doing the right things so far to make it to the 2022 T20 WC squad.

Nonetheless, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Hardik still has the upper hand and will pip Venky Iyer for the fast-bowling all-rounder's slot, for the T20 WC, once he starts bowling and regains full fitness.

“It may look like Venkatesh Iyer is ahead in the race, but I won't be surprised if Hardik Pandya wins it. Ravindra Jadeja will be the spin all-rounder and Pandya will be the fast-bowling all-rounder,” Aakash said on his official YouTube channel.

“Iyer is present for now but the day Hardik starts bowling, he will pip Venkatesh Iyer for the role. It is also worth remembering that it is not a bilateral series where you can take 18-20 players at once according to your convenience. This is an ICC event where you can select only a 15-member squad," the ex-cricketer pointed out.

The former India batter further stated that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venky Iyer will only have an outside chance if Hardik doesn't regain full fitness.

“So, when you only have 15 places, you cannot take everything with you. So, you will only have two options for the all-rounder position and for me, they would be Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya. The day Hardik starts bowling, he'll pip Iyer for the all-rounder's slot for T20 World Cup: Aakash Chopra

India defeated West Indies by 17 runs in the third and final T20I on Sunday (February 21) to complete a 3-0 whitewash in the three-match series. Young all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was one of the heroes of India's victory as he contributed well with both the bat and the ball.

Iyer slammed a crucial knock of 35 runs off 19 balls to help India post a strong total of 184 runs on the board before taking two wickets with the ball to help the hosts defend the total. In the absence of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Iyer along with the likes of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur has impressed with his exploits in limited-overs cricket.

Pandya had opted to make himself unavailable for selection post India's exit from T20 World Cup 2021 to focus on his bowling and overall fitness. The all-rounder has since missed India's series against New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies. He will also be not part of the upcoming T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka at home.

In Pandya's absence, Iyer, Chahar and Sharul have all strengthened their case for cementing their spots in India's T20I squad. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes Iyer is now ahead of Pandya as far as a spot in the T20 World Cup 2022 squad is concerned.

Expressing concerns over Pandya's return to bowling full-time for the Indian team, Jaffer said he feels Iyer is currently ahead of the star all-rounder while adding that the upcoming IPL 2022 will play a key role in his return to the Indian team.

"At this point of time, I feel he's a little bit ahead because you don't know Hardik Pandya whether he's bowling now or how fit he is. Obviously how the IPL goes for Hardik Pandya will play a very key role but at this point of time, Venkatesh Iyer is ahead of Hardik Pandya," Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

Iyer has so far played six T20Is for India and has scored 128 runs while picking up three wickets. After a stuttering start, the young all-rounder has started to find his feet in international cricket and is expected to give Pandya a tough competition for the all-rounder's spot in the squad.

He also said the selection panel cannot take a call on his comeback until they have proper confirmation of his fitness and bowling.

"Definitely, Hardik was a very important part of the Indian team. But now after the injuries, we'll say that until he isn't 100% fit, until we get that information that he's ready to go, is bowling and is match fit... when that comes in front of us then definitely he's an important player and we'll consider him immediately," Sharma said during a virtual press conference on Saturday.

'We'll consider him immediately': Chetan Sharma provides update on Hardik Pandya's return to Indian team

Hardik Pandya has not been part of Team India's white-ball setup post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Pandya had already lost his Test spot after not being able to fulfill the all-rounder's duty and is out of the white-ball setup as well in order to regain full fitness.

Ahead of India's three-match T20I series versus West Indies, on Wednesday (February 16), Team India limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma opened up on Hardik's possible return and categorially denied having any word with the national selectors on the all-rounder's comeback into the national side. As of now, Hardik hasn't been considered for India's home season, also including Sri Lanka, as he is regaining full fitness to bat and ball in the IPL 2022 edition. Depending on his fitness and performance, he is likely to be considered for national recall post this year's IPL season.

He is expected to bat as well as bowl and not just feature as a pure batter, which had led to his omission from the Test setup and has also put his limited-overs spot in danger.

Doors are open for everyone: Rohit Sharma opens up on Team India star Hardik Pandya's possible return

The newly formed Gujarat Titans (GT) bought some marquee players during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, to build their team around the pre-picked players.

Afghanistan's star spinner Rashid Khan, India's Mohammed Shami and New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson star the bowling department.

In the batting department, the team looks solid with the likes of Shubman Gill, Jason Roy, David Miller. The team also has all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Rahul Tewatia, Vijay Shankar.

'Resumed practice, bowling well': Gujarat Titans give update on Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a star-studded event, which took place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The ten franchises went on a buying spree and added quite a few big names to strengthen their respective squads for the upcoming IPL 15 edition, set to be held in India in March-May.

Talking about the Gujarat Titans (GT), the newly-formed IPL franchise along with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), they also added some big names in their roster ahead of the 15th edition of the cash-rich league. After adding the likes of all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan along with opener Shubman Gill, as their three initial picks, the GT franchise did a good job in their maiden IPL auction.

Gujarat Titans Complete squad for IPL 2022: Hardik Pandya-led line-up filled with all-rounders, star pacers

Hardik Pandya is out of action from international cricket for quite sometime. He remains a vital cog in India's limited-overs setup but hasn't played a single game since the Men in Blue's dismal 2021 T20 World Cup campaign.

Hardik has had issues fulfilling the all-rounder's role following his back surgery, in the pre-pandemic era. Since then, he hasn't bowled a lot for Team India and didn't roll his arms for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last two IPL seasons. In the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, the 28-year-old Hardik will represent the newly-formed Ahmedabad franchise, named the Gujarat Titans, where he will be eager to play as an all-rounder and also make a mark as captain.

While Hardik remains a big name in Indian cricket in recent times, following his IPL blitz for the MI franchise, the all-rounder had once failed to draw a single bid and went unsold at the 2014 auction for the cash-rich league. Back in 2014, Hardik wasn't a known face in the domestic circuit and, thus, failed to draw a single bid despite a base price of INR 1 million (Rs 10 lakhs).

In the 2015 auction, Hardik's base price remained the same but he managed to be bought by the Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise. From 2015-2021, Hardik has amassed 1,476 runs at a strike rate of 153.91 along with claiming 42 wickets. He was a vital part of MI's title win in the 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 editions, respectively. He will now be eager to replicate his success for his home franchise Gujarat Titans.

MS Dhoni to Virat Kohli: A look at first IPL salaries of superstar cricketers

Hardik Pandya isn't a part of the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team's forthcoming white-ball series versus West Indies, at home, as the national selectors are still not sure of his all-round abilities. Hardik is, meanwhile, keeping himself fit ahead of the IPL 2022 edition, which is reportedly set to be held entirely in India.

Hardik is well aware that the upcoming IPL season holds great significance for him. After not being retained by the Mumbai Indians (MI), the 28-year-old all-rounder will try to impress one and all in all departments as he has fallen behind in the pecking order, and lost his place in Tests, in the limited-overs side largely due to his inability to bowl (due to back issues). Moreover, he will also get a chance to make heads turn with his captaincy skills as he will lead his home franchise, the newly-formed Ahmedabad IPL team.

Speaking ahead of IPL 2022, Hardik dissected the contrasting captaincy styles of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni and mentioned what he will pick from them. Hardik has played under the trio in IPL or for Team India. "From Virat, I will pick his aggression and passion, his energy which is tremendous. From Mahi bhai it's the composure, calmness, remaining same in every situation, trying to see what new things he can add," Hardik said on Tuesday (February 1) during an interaction facilitated by the Ahmedabad franchise.

"...and from Rohit, I would pick the freedom as he lets the player decide what he wants to do. These three qualities if I can pick up, it will be a very good combination," he further added.

IPL 2022: Ahmedabad captain Hardik Pandya mentions qualities he'll pick from Virat Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit

Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is all set to embark on a new journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he gears up to lead the Ahmedabad franchise in the upcoming 2022 edition of the tournament. Hardik was released by Mumbai Indians last year before being picked by the Ahmedabad franchise as one of their three picks from the player draft.

Hardik will be turning up for a new team for the first time in his IPL career since making his debut in the T20 league in 2015. The all-rounder has not enjoyed the best of form over the past couple of years owing to his fitness issues. Pandya has faced a lot of struggles ever since undergoing a back surgery in 2019 and has refrained from bowling.

He didn't bowl at all for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 last year and bowled only a handful of overs for the Indian team during the T20 World Cup 2021. However, the all-rounder has been working hard on his fitness after opting for a break post the T20 World Cup last year and is looking to make a strong return to the pitch.

While Hardik is yet to make himself available for selection in the Indian team, he is all set to lead Ahmedabad in IPL 2022. When asked if he will be bowling for his new team in the upcoming season, the star all-rounder remained coy. "It's a surprise for everyone," he told Cricbuzz.

Hardik has asked the selectors not to pick him as he has been working on returning to bowling regularly. The all-rounder said he has always liked to contribute with the bat and the ball and will not settle for playing purely as a batter going forward. With a T20 World Cup lined up later this year, Pandya's bowling will be crucial for his chances in the Indian team.

"It's been challenging. I've always been someone who contributes with the bat, ball and on the field. When I decided I will just bat, I wanted to spend some time on the ground. We all love challenges and I love to fight it out. Criticism is good and it doesn't really bother me. For me, results do matter but I work hard for the process," said Pandya.

"I've always realised that as an allrounder I give a lot of different options to the team. I'll try to work on being an allrounder and if something doesn't work out then my batting is always there. But Hardik Pandya combined with both bat and ball, it sounds better than just a batter," he added.

Pandya also spoke about learning from the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having learned by playing under them in the Indian team and the Indian Premier League. Hardik wants to implement different qualities from the trio in his own captaincy style when he leads Ahmedabad in IPL 2022.

"From Virat, I would pick his aggression, passion and energy, which is tremendous. With Mahi bhai, I would pick the composed nature. From Rohit, I'll let the players decide what they want to do. These three qualities I'll take from them and bring here," Pandya told Cricbuzz.

'It's a surprise': Hardik Pandya on whether he will bowl or not for Ahmedabad franchise in IPL 2022

Hardik Pandya has had a tough ride in competitive cricket ever since the gentlemen's game resumed in the Covid-19 era. Before the pandemic struck, Hardik was already battling a tough back injury and underwent a surgey, missing India's tour of New Zealand in early 2020.

Since then, Hardik was part of Mumbai Indians' (MI) IPL 2020 win but couldn't do much with the bat whereas didn't bowl a single over in the entire season. While he had a good run with the willow in India's tour of Australia which followed suit, everything slipped from thereon for the star all-rounder. He has bowled very few overs for Team India, didn't bowl in entire IPL 2021 as well, saw a dip in form with the bat and also lost the Test spot for not fulfilling the all-rounder's role. In addition, he is still not fully fit to regain his spot in the national side ahead of Rohit Sharma-led India's home season in white-ball formats.

Speaking to Economic Times, the 28-year old Hardik, however, remains undeterred and shared his plans for the future, revealing that he already has 2023 ODI World Cup in mind during preparations. "Yes, that’s the plan. My main aim is to be at my peak when the World Cup happens."

Hardik added, “All my training, planning, preparation is keeping the World Cup in mind. I want to win the World Cup for the country. It will make me really happy and proud. It is like an obsession with me. IPL will give me a very good preparatory platform for the World Cup but all the hard work ultimately is for the Indian team and the World Cup.''

My aim is to be at my peak in 2023 ODI World Cup: Team India star Hardik Pandya sets sight on future

Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya said he has always rushed his preparations in the past, keeping the interest of the Indian team in his mind. However, this time around the all-rounder decided to take time off and work on recovering fully before playing for India again. Pandya was last seen in action for India during the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

Pandya, who grew into one of the vital cogs of the Indian team soon after making his international debut in 2016, faced a huge setback in his career when he had to undergo back surgery in October 2019. He has since refrained from bowling regularly and has played majorly as a batter for the Indian team.

Pandya, who bowled only a handful of overs in the T20 World Cup 2021 due to his back issue, had decided to take time off and focus on his recovery after the conclusion of the showpiece event in the UAE last year. The all-rounder said he is working hard to make himself available for selection in the Indian team once again.

“I have always rushed myself with my preparation keeping the team’s interest in mind. But this time I wanted some time off to prepare myself physically and mentally. I also wanted to take some time off for my family. We have spent a lot of time in bio bubbles, though everyone has tried to make us feel comfortable, staying in a bio bubble is very tough”, said Pandya was quoted as saying by Economic Times.

The 28-year also cited bio-bubble fatigue as one of the reasons why he opted for the ongoing break. Hardik said he wanted to spend some time with his family as playing in bio-bubbles since 2020 has not been easy for the all-rounder. He missed the home series against New Zealand post the T20 World Cup and was also not part of the Indian squad for the South Africa tour.

“You spend a lot of time away from your family and that eventually takes a toll on you. I wanted time off to reflect on myself and understand which areas I need to work on and concentrate on improving those things. I am doing two sessions every day. I have always worked hard in silence and will continue to do so," said Hardik.

Pandya is also set to miss the upcoming limited-overs series between India and West Indies at home, and is unlikely to take part in the Sri Lanka series as well.

Haris Rauf was one of the top performers for Babar Azam-led Team Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup, held in the UAE. Rauf returned with eight wickets in the showpiece event, with a best of 4 for 22 versus New Zealand. While he went wicketless and conceded at over ten per over in the semi-final clash versus eventual winners Australia, Rauf impressed overall with his raw pace.

Rauf's career took off after his maiden stint in the BBL 2019/20 season for the Glenn Maxwell-led Melbourne Stars. Not many know that the speedster was also a net bowler for Virat Kohli-led Team India during their 2018/19 tour of Australia for four Tests Down Under. Back then, he struck a chord with Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and the likes. In a recent interaction, the 28-year-old revealed that Rahul and Hardik were very happy seeing his progress and play for his country when they met him during India-Pakistan's 2021 T20 WC face-off in Dubai.

Talking to paktv.tv recently Rauf recalled the interaction he had with Rahul and Hardik and said, "When I was net bowler for India, I had bowled to them in Sydney in the nets. So I had told them once that I would one day bowl to them in an international game. And both Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul had told me that I have the potential to bowl at international level. They gave me a lot of confidence."

"Then when I met them recently at the T20 World Cup, they remembered all our conversations. We had a discussion over it as well and they were really happy for me watching me play for Pakistan. When you play with good players you learn all the good things. I always try to learn good things from such players," he further added.

Rauf returned with 1 for 25 in Pakistan's 10-wicket win over India in the 2021 T20 WC. He debuted for the Men in Green during early 2020, in a T20I versus Bangladesh. So far, he has impressed one and all in his 34 T20Is, taking 41 wickets at an economy rate of 8.44. In addition, he has represented Pakistan in 8 ODIs, claiming 14 wickets at an economy rate of less than 6.

Haris Rauf was one of the top performers for Babar Azam-led Team Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup, held in the UAE. Rauf returned with eight wickets in the showpiece event, with a best of 4 for 22 versus New Zealand.

Gary Kirsten, the batting coach, and mentor of the Ahmedabad franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has said that Hardik Pandya will be really motivated to show what he can do at the big stage as a leader.

Ahmedabad has picked Hardik Pandya (Rs 15 crore), Rashid Khan (Rs 15 crore), and Shubman Gill (Rs 8 crore). Vikram Solanki has been appointed as Ahmedabad`s Director of Cricket while Hardik Pandya will be leading the franchise.

Gary Kirsten will serve as the batting coach and mentor of the Ahmedabad franchise while Ashish Nehra has been appointed as the head coach.

"I am looking forward to working with Hardik as a young and new captain. I think he will be really motivated to come in and make a plan and show what he is capable of at this level of the game as a leader. He`s a great player. What I have heard is that he is really keen to get into the mix and get involved," said Kirsten on Star Sports` show `IPL Selection Day.

"I think he understands the importance of this tournament. What I have heard is that he is raring to go and get into the mix from a leadership perspective. So, I think that`s really exciting for us to have a player with such a level of skill, motivated to do well in this competition," he added.

When asked about picking Rashid and Gill, Kirsten said: "I am really excited by both of them. They are both high performers - Rashid Khan has gone around the world, proven his value anywhere, so that`s an incredible signing for us. I am very excited to work with him - I haven`t yet - but I have seen him a lot, have met him a few times, but have never really worked with him. So, I am looking forward to that. Certainly, watching him on the field, he`s a very competitive, young man that wants to do well for the franchise that he`s been involved in."

"Gill is a fantastic player, who, in my view, should be playing for India. He is on the verge of that and has played already. With great flair and instinct for the game, he could be a match-winner on his own. From a batting perspective, I am looking forward to working with him and helping him give the best out of an IPL season. We`re playing in the best competition in the world, just to make sure that`s it`s something important for us as a franchise and that the players come in and realize that it is an honour to be part of this franchise and performing for this team," he added.

Talking about his role of batting coach and mentor, Kirsten said: "My role, designation is Team Mentor / Batting Coach, so I am going to have my hands full with handling a lot of work at ground level, but essentially, just to be assisting players in preparing them to be the best versions of themselves and the team that they are going to play. I love the coaching and I am really looking forward to the role. I have journeyed a lot through IPL, of four years. I`ve been involved in a lot of short-format matches and got a decent understanding of what a team needs to do, how you need to find that winning flow, which is a priority in IPL."

IPL`s two new teams -- Sanjiv Goenka RPSG Group for the Lucknow franchise and CVC Capital`s Ahmedabad team had received formal clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The formal clearance was given after a meeting of the IPL Governing Council.IPL chairman Brijesh Patel had also confirmed that the IPL auction would be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. Hardik Pandya will be motivated to show what he can do as leader for Ahmedabad IPL team, says Gary Kirsten

The Ahmedabad Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise revealed their final three picks from the players draft ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction on Friday (January 21). The Ahmedabad IPL franchise has roped in star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, ace spinner Rashid Khan and young India batter Shubman Gill ahead of the auction.

The two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad had been given the right to pick a maximum of three players each ahead of the mega auction after the existing eight teams revealed the list of the players retained by them. While Ahmedabad have picked Hardik, Rashid and Shubman, the Lucknow team has picked KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi.

The Ahmedabad franchise has picked Hardik and Rashid as their top players at the price of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) each. Shubman will be earning a staggering amount of Rs 8 crore (INR 80 million) per season with the team. While Hardik was part of the Mumbai Indians squad last season, Rashid and Shubman represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.

Hardik had made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2015 and played an instrumental role in their success over the years before his seven-year-long stint with the franchise ended this year. Hardik has been one of the best all-rounders in the league over the years with 1476 runs and 42 wickets in 92 IPL matches.

Rashid, on the other hand, made his IPL debut in 2017, had played only for Sunrisers Hyderabad till now and will be part of a new team from the upcoming season. Many had been left surprised when Rashid was not retained by the Sunrisers before it was revealed he wanted to be retained as the first-choice player for an amount of Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million).

However, SRH wanted their skipper Kane Williamson to be the first-choice retention. They went on to keep Williamson and released Rashid ahead of the mega auction. Rashid has been one of the best bowlers in the IPL since his debut in 2017 and has an impressive 93 wickets to his name in 76 IPL matches.

Gill too has played only for Kolkata Knight Riders so far in the IPL and will be playing for a new team first time this year. He was picked by KKR for a sum of Rs 1.8 crore (INR 18 million) ahead of IPL 2018 and has since made a name for himself with his consistent performance.

He will be now earning more than four times what he was at KKR with his Rs 8 crore (INR 80 million) contract with the Ahmedabad team. Gill has 1417 runs in 58 IPL matches. Former India head coach Gary Kirsten and former India pacer Ashish Nehra will be part of the team's backroom staff.

Hardik Pandya likely to be roped in as captain by Ahemdabad IPL franchise ahead of IPL 2022 - Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is all set to be a grand affair this year with as many as ten teams battling it out for a number of top players who will be going under the hammer at the showpiece event. While the existing eight teams have already revealed their final retentions, the two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad can make three picks each from the pool of non-retained players.

Barring the players picked by Ahmedabad and Lucknow in the draft, all others will be heading to the mega auction. Several big Indian names, who have not been retained by their respective IPL sides will be up for grabs at the mega auction. Here we take a look at five Indian stars who are likely to fetch a huge amount at the IPL 2022 mega player auction.

KL Rahul

One of the favourites to captain the Lucknow IPL franchise in the 2022 season, former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul is unlikely to head into the auction pool as he is expected to be picked in the players draft ahead of the event. Rahul is reportedly set to join Lucknow and has been offered a staggering contract.

He has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL over the last few seasons and has been among the runs. Rahul was recently appointed as India's limited-overs vice-captain and is seen as a future leader of the national team as well. He has so far played 94 IPL matches and has an impressive 3273 runs to his name at an average of over 47.

Hardik Pandya

Mumbai Indians had to let go of their star all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction owing to his recent fitness issues and concerns regarding his bowling. Hardik, who has played an instrumental role in Mumbai Indians' success over the years, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 as he continues to deal with his back issues which have hampered his progress.

Hardik had been retained for a sum of Rs 11 crore (110 million) by Mumbai Indians in 2018 and is expected to go for big money once again if he heads to the auction pool. However, there is a strong chance that the all-rounder is picked by one of the two new teams - Lucknow or Ahmedabad before the auction for a huge sum.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer's rise in the Indian Premier League has been nothing short of extraordinary. From a young batting talent, Iyer matured into a fine leader for the Delhi Capitals after he was handed over captaincy midway into the IPL 2018 season. He led DC to their first-ever final in IPL 2020 and proved why he is on his path to becoming one of the future greats in the IPL.

Besides his captaincy credentials, Iyer is a reliable batsman, who has been a consistent performer in the league. He was released by Delhi Capitals after reportedly expressing his desire to look for a leadership role elsewhere after being replaced by Rishabh Pant as captain. Iyer has 2375 runs in 87 matches in the IPL at an average of over 31.

Shikhar Dhawan

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan might have slipped down the pecking order in the Indian team as far as T20Is are concerned, but he remains a prolific run-getter in the IPL. Dhawan has been churning out runs regularly for every team that he has played for in the league so far and enjoyed a brilliant stint for Delhi Capitals before being released this year.

Dhawan scored 587 runs in 16 matches for DC in IPL 2020 and was the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament. The experienced opener will be in massive demand at the IPL 2022 mega auction and is expected to trigger a bidding war among teams.

Ishan Kishan

The explosive young wicket-keeper batter made his India debut last year and has been impressive since. Kishan didn't have a season to remember in IPL 2021 but still managed to stay among the runs despite not getting many chances. However, his versatility as a batter who can fire as an opener, as well as in the middle-order makes him a huge asset for any team.

Kishan is also a brilliant young wicket-keeper and can also be groomed into a leadership role in the future. He is certain to draw bids from a number of teams at the IPL mega auction and get a fat pay cheque for his services.

KL Rahul to Hardik Pandya: Indian stars who can bag big contracts at IPL 2022 mega auction

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a tough time deciding their final four retentions ahead of the deadline day with a number of superstars in their star-studded squad. The five-time champions let go of the likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Ishan Kishan among others while retaining their captain Rohit Sharma and three others.

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who is part of the Mumbai Indians backroom staff, recently revealed why the franchise didn't retain Hardik ahead of the mega auction. Hardik had been a vital cog in the Mumbai Indians set up over the years and played an instrumental role in the team's success in the IPL.

However, he was let go of by the five-time champions, who decided to keep Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. Hardik, who has been dealing with constant fitness issues, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 and has also been left out of the Indian team after average performances in the T20 World Cup 2021.

However, Zaheer has backed the star all-rounder to make a strong comeback after gaining full fitness while opening up on Mumbai Indians' decision to release him.

"Absolutely (Hardik can regain his full fitness). Hardik is very keen on that. The retention calls usually take into consideration various aspects and angles. The debates are usually very long (laughs). It is not an easy process when you set yourself up for a big auction and say goodbye to all players with a heavy heart with whom you spent a lot of time and energy," Zaheer was quoted as saying by TimesofIndia.com.

'How will you do Kapil Dev's action?': Ranveer recalls interaction with Sachin, Hardik during 83 training

Hardik Pandya was once considered one of the most important members of the Indian cricket team across formats. He was contributing well with both the bat and the ball and had almost become indispensable in all three formats of the game. However, the star all-rounder is currently not part of India's squad in any of the three formats as he continues to deal with injuries and fitness concerns.

Hardik's fitness has been questioned by many in recent times as the all-rounder has failed to bowl regularly. Ever since his back surgery in 2020, he has not been able to contribute properly with the ball. He did not bowl at all for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2021 and also played as a pure batter for India on several occasions.

He bowled only at times when a few overs were desperately required from him. Recently, India's former head coach Ravi Shastri said Pandya needs to work on his fitness to be able to bowl at least four overs regularly in T20Is. Reacting to Shastri's comments, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt criticised Pandya for his poor fitness.

Butt believes Pandya is too weak to even last in just one format and should be putting on some more muscles on his body to ensure he doesn't keep getting injured easily.

"Hardik Pandya's body is so weak that he can't even survive in a single format. He needs to put on some muscle by weight training and proper diet," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"Ravi Shastri recently said Pandya should go back and work hard so that he is able to bowl 4 overs. That means he can't even bowl 4 overs properly at the moment," he added.

Pandya has struggled massively due to his fitness issues of late. While he didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021, his lack of bowling left India with only five options during the T20 World Cup 2021 where the Men in Blue failed to qualify for the semi-finals after two losses in the first two games.

Hardik Pandya is so weak, he can't survive in a single format: Ex-Pakistan captain criticises all-rounder

Hardik Pandya hasn't been firing on all cylinders ever since cricket resumed in the post-pandemic era. The 27-year-old lost his place in the Test line-up for not being able to bowl -- due to back issues -- and has managed to contribute with only a handful of overs for the Men in Blue and Mumbai Indians (MI) with the white ball in hand.

Hence, his place in the limited-overs side is also very much up for grabs. On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) wonder boy Venkatesh Iyer's stocks have seen a sharp rise following his breakthrough season in IPL 2021. While he was included in India's T20I line-up for the NZ series at home, the swashbuckling left-hander is delivering at the domestic level as well.

Iyer, who is representing Madhya Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has been in stellar form and has amassed 348 runs in four outings, including scores of 112, 71 and 151. Thus, he is the second-highest run-getter -- only behind Maharastra's Ruturaj Gaikwad -- and is being considered as a replacement for Hardik in the limited-overs setup for the South Africa tour.

In this regard, former Indian keeper-batsman and selector Saba Karim has named the KKR opener as Hardik's like-for-like replacement in India's ODI and T20I setup. He has also called for Ruturaj's inclusion in ODIs and Tests. "I believe that Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad have almost entered the first-team squad, and I'm talking about white-ball cricket. If we have to start the preparation for the 2023 World Cup, these two players should be part of the squad as soon as possible.

"They should be given as much exposure as possible. Both these players provide a different spectrum for the team. Gaikwad can be the backup opener with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul going strong. On the other hand, Iyer has performed really well while batting at No. 5 or No. 6 in the Vijay Hazare trophy. If we are looking at the replacement for Hardik Pandya, we have already found the player," Karim said on the Khelneeti podcast.

Karim also opined that Indian head coach Rahul Dravid needs to start creating a core set of players in the white-ball formats, with plenty of ICC events lined-up every year.

"Rahul Dravid has seen these players for quite a while now. The way Dravid used to prepare as a player, he must be prepared in the same way as a coach. He must have thought about a core of 23-25 players in the white-ball cricket circuit. He must have started the preparation for the World Cups Venkatesh Iyer should definitely be part of the South Africa tour. He must then be tracked be in the Ranji Trophy as well because I believe he is an all-format player. It is also the time that Gaikwad is in contention for the Test squad," Karim further added.

At present, India is preparing for their departure to South Africa, where they are scheduled to play three Tests and equal number of ODIs. The tour opener will commence in Centurion on December 26 with the Test series followed by the ODIs.

Rohit Sharma will lead the limited-overs side whereas Virat Kohli will continue as the Test captain.

We have already found the player: Saba Karim names Hardik Pandya's replacement before South Africa ODIs

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar recently recalled his meeting with star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya during the Asia Cup in 2018. Akhtar said he was shocked by Hardik's very lean physique and had even warned him of an injury. Incidentally, Hardik was stretchered off the field just moments later due to a back injury in India's clash against Pakistan.

Hardik suffered a back injury while bowling during the game against Pakistan. He went down on the ground and lied motionless for a while after clutching his back. BCCI later confirmed that he had incurred 'an acute lower back injury'. The back injury has since continued to trouble the all-rounder, who has had to significantly reduce his workload due to the issue and has avoided bowling too much.

Akhtar revealed he was present in Dubai for the India-Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2018 and had met both Hardik and Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Talking to former India cricketer Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel, Akhtar recalled how he warned Hardik about an injury ahead of the game and the all-rounder ended up getting his back injured just moments later.

"I told Bumrah in Dubai, even Hardik Pandya...I still have such strong back muscles behind my shoulders, but they looked so lean. I was shocked. I warned him that you will get injured, but he told me that he has been playing a lot of cricket. Exactly an hour and a half later, he got injured," Akhtar said.

Hardik was dropped from India's T20 squad post the T20 World Cup 2021 where he failed to impress with both the bat and the ball as the team endured a disappointing campaign. The all-rounder is currently training at the NCA in Bengaluru and will be hoping to make a strong comeback in the future.

All the eight existing IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). While some big names were retained, many popular names got released. Though many are set to enter the auction pool, some big players are expected to be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- as the two new additions have a license to pick three players each prior to IPL 2022 mega auction.

For the unversed, the big players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Hardik Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Ben Stokes, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. have been released. Hence, the two new IPL teams have quite a few options to pick from.

Before the mega auction, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra named six players who are most likely to be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Speaking on his Youtube channel, "My first pick is KL Rahul. I feel he will not be able to reach the auction. Punjab Kings wanted to retain him but he didn’t want to. I think he is going to Lucknow and will become the captain of the new team. Rashid Khan is second in the pecking order. I don’t think his name will reach the auction table. He did not want to stay at SunRisers Hyderabad as he has been already approached by a new franchise with a better salary.

My third pick is Shreyas Iyer. He is likely to become captain of the Ahmedabad franchise. He is an important player and will be drafted to a new team. I won’t be surprised to see him lead Ahmedabad as he has already captained Delhi Capitals. Yuzvendra Chahal is another player who might go to Ahmedabad. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya might not be a part of the auction, but Ishan Kishan’s stocks are a bit high at the moment," he opined.

Aakash Chopra predicts 6 players who will be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad before IPL 2022 auction

All the eight IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). Among them, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels ex-Mumbai Indians (MI) player Rahul Chahar is likely to get acquired by the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Chopra said during a Q/A session on his Youtube channel, "RCB will not get Rashid, they can forget about that. Instead, they will go after Rahul Chahar, big time. No spinners apart from leg spinners work at the Chinnaswamy stadium. He also bowls a lot quicker in the air. Ravi Bishnoi is also an option, but I’m thinking Rahul Chahar, they will break the bank for him. Chahal might not make it to the auctions."

It is important to note that RCB have retained Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj. Hence, with no Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB will like to rope in a quality spinner. While Rashid Khan will be very costly, Chopra feels Rahul Chahar can be a handy pick for the Bengaluru franchise.
