The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was keenly awaited. The excitement for each year's edition knows no boundaries. This time around, it went a level up as the ardent cricket fans welcomed the two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league.

The BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two more teams with an aim to give more opportunities to youngsters, some big names who often got sidelined and fans plenty more to cheer for. While a nervy start was expected from both Gujarat and Lucknow in IPL 2022, the two teams have taken the 15th season by storm and have announced their arrivals with a bang. Both GT and LSG have been the giant killers of IPL 2022, surpassing some big teams and surprising many without breaking much sweat.

1) Team compositions

Complete squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Abhinav Sadarangani, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Noor Ahmad, R Sai Kishore, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, Varun Aaron, Rahul Tewatia, Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Darshan Nalkande, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sai Sudarshan

Complete squad of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Looking at both squads, it is safe to say that the newbies didn't get bogged down in the two-day mega auction, held in mid-February. They came with a clear plan: to fill their squads with multi-dimensional players, seasoned bowlers, a mix of domestic talents and foreign players. Their smart team composition is helping them reap rewards in the IPL 2022 edition so far.

2) Newness, fresh minds, new captains

Starting from scratch often helps, especially if it is going the distance in a big-ticket T20 tournament like the IPL. Both Gujarat and Lucknow have benefitted from a fresh and positive dressing room environment created since the beginning of the 15th season. With the leadership group being expanded in Team India, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have also put their best foot forward to showcase their credentials as GT and LSG skippers, respectively.

Meanwhile, the inclusions of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten (for Gujarat) and Gautam Gambhir, Andy Bichel, Andy Flower (for Lucknow) in the coaching setup have led to role clarity for players, keeping things simple, sticking to basics, resorting to smart and tactical matchups. The presence of such stalwarts have given enough cushion to both the young captains and their respective players.

3) Playing fearlessly, without any past baggage

Both Lucknow and Gujarat have expressed themselves freely on the field, having no past baggage. While it helped both sides to settle their nerves by locking horns with each other on debut, they have only grown from strength to strength from thereon. In addition, the two teams have gained immensely with the repeated failures of two of the most successful IPL teams; i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

While Gujarat (under a totally different owner) and Lucknow both have started well in their first-ever IPL season, the duo are here for the long run and not just to fill in for a few seasons. Thus, they will hope to go the distance courtesy the strong foundation laid down and build something special for themselves in the IPL, where the eight original franchises have already carved out their own space and identity.

For now, it is just the start. But the start surely has been promising. Let's see what else is in store for the two newbies as they strive hard to gain prominence, value and recognition in the cash-rich league.

How newbies Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants have been the giant-killers in IPL 2022

In a huge blow to Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of their clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, skipper Hardik Pandya was ruled out due to a groin issue. The star all-rounder has been in terrific form for his new side DC with the bat and the ball and has had a magnificent start to his captaincy stint.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan is leading Gujarat Titans in their ongoing encounter against CSK in Hardik's absence. The ace spinner revealed Hardik had issues in his groin area and the franchise didn't want to take a chance with his fitness as the all-rounder remains a vital cog in their wheel.

Rashid expressed confidence that it's a minor issue and Hardik will hopefully be back in the next game for Gujarat Titans. "Bit of stiffness in the groin area for Hardik, so as a team we didn't want to take a chance. He will rest and hopefully be back for the next game," said the spinner at the toss after opting to bowl against CSK.

Hardik was roped in by Gujarat Titans as their skipper ahead of the new season after being released by Mumbai Indians. GT paid a huge sum of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) to secure the services of the star all-rounder and he has repaid the faith shown by the team management with brilliant performances.

In five games so far this season, Hardik has notched up 228 runs and picked up four wickets for his side while leading them to four wins in five matches. Gujarat Titans have faced their only defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad this season and are currently sitting at the top spot on the points table with eight points.

IPL 2022: Stand-in skipper Rashid Khan reveals why Hardik Pandya is missing GT's clash against CSK

Skipper Hardik Pandya enhanced his reputation as a number four batter with an unbeaten 87 off 52 balls as Gujarat Titans trounced Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs in the Indian Premier League here on Thursday.

Hardik, whose strike rate and approach has been questioned at his new position, played responsibly when it was needed before displaying the power he is known for to lead Titans to 192 for four after being sent into bat.

The in form Jos Buttler (54 off 24) provided another flying start to Royals but the rest of the batting unit did not deliver as the innings ended at 155 for nine in 20 overs.

Young left-arm pacer Yash Dayal (3/40) impressed on IPL debut while Lockie Ferguson (3/23)) got the important wicket of Buttler, who was deceived by the New Zealander's slow yorker after a series of quick deliveries.

Ferguson also dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin in the same over after the senior India spinner was promoted to bat at number three. The other notable contribution to Royals' innings came from Shimron Hetmyer (29 off 17). From 56 for one, Royals slipped to 90 for five and could not recover from there on. Hardik, who has been bowling regularly this season, also picked up a wicket but he took himself off the attack in the 18th over after feeling a little discomfort in the groin area.

With their fourth win in five games, Titans displaced Royals from the top of the points table. It was Royals' second loss in five games.

Earlier, Hardik found an able ally in Abhinav Manohar (43 off 28) before he exploded in the company of David Miller (31 not out off 14) to power the IPL debutants to their highest score of the tournament.

Hardik and Manohar shared an 86-run stand for the fourth wicket before the skipper and Miller blasted 53 off 25 balls to end the innings in style. After being put in to bat, Gujarat found themselves reeling at 53 for three.

While Hardik's 52-ball knock was studded with eight fours and four sixes, Manohar struck four fours and two maximums. Miller, who overall hit five boundaries and a six, fetched 21 runs in the penultimate over off Kuldeep Sen (1/51).

To start with, Hardik was aggressive on pacer Kuldeep as he hammered him for three successive boundaries in the fifth over. He then fetched his first maximum in the seventh over, when he clobbered Riyan Parag over his head.

The duo upped the ante when Manohar launched into inform Yuzvendra Chahal, hammering him for a four and maximum, a lofted inside-out drive over cover.

The two then took on Kuldeep, hammering him for three boundaries in the 14th over, where Hardik also notched up his fifty, with a cut towards backward point fence.

And in the next over, Hardik clobbered two successive maximums off seasoned spinner Ashwin, who leaked 16 runs in the over. With Titans reaching 130 for three in 15 overs, the stage was set for a big total.

After Manohar departed, Miller ably supported the skipper. Titans lost opener Matthew Wade (12) cheaply, courtesy a direct hit by Rassie Van Der Dussen from cover. Titans slipped to 15/2, as Vijay Shakar (2) also perished cheaply and then a rusty looking Shubman Gill (13) became Parag's first victim, after he was caught by Shimron Hetymyer at the long-on fence.

Royals missed the services of lead pacer Trent Boult who was ruled out of the game due to a niggle.

IPL 2022: Hardik Pandya, Lockie Ferguson guide Gujarat Titans to victory over Rajasthan Royals

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) handed Gujarat Titans (GT) their first defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season on Monday (April 11). SRH chased down the target of 163 runs with five balls to spare as they thrashed Hardik Pandya & Co. by 8 wickets to bag their second win on the trot. Their win also marked an end to GT's unbeaten streak of three games in the tournament.

It was a clinical performance with the bat from SRH in the run chase as Williamson led from the front with a captain's knock of 57 runs off 46 balls. He added an opening stand of 64 runs with Abhishek Sharma, who continued his fine form and scored a quickfire 42 off 32 balls. The duo got SRH off to a flyer and set the stage for a comfortable run chase for their side.

Hardik, who has been enjoying a great start to his stint as captain of Gujarat Titans, saw his side slip to their first defeat this season and lost his cool during the game. In the 13th over of SRH's run-chase, Hardik was taken to the cleaners by Williamson, who slammed two back-to-back sixes on two deliveries.

On the final delivery of that over, SRH batter Rahul Tripathi played a shot in the air which landed close to Shami, who was fielding at deep third man. The pacer didn't attempt to complete the catch and was on the receiving end of skipper Hardik's fury. The GT captain was livid as he hurled loud words at Shami, who is a senior fast bowler for GT and Team India.

Hardik's action didn't go down well with fans on social media as the Gujarat Titans captain was slammed for his behaviour against Shami. The all-rounder was criticised by many on social media, who hit out at him for disrespecting a player of Shami's stature.

Tripathi later retired hurt after injuring himself while batting. However, it was a comprehensive win for SRH, who rode on skipper Williamson's half-century and crucial knocks from Sharma (42) and Nicholas Pooran (34) to get over the line with five balls to spare. SRH have now won their last two games in a row and are currently sitting at the eighth spot on the points table.

Here are some reactions: Dear Hardik, you are a terrible captain.

Hardik Pandya becomes fastest Indian cricketer to hit 100 sixes in IPL history

Sunrisers Hyderabad bagged their first win of the tournament last week after defeating defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their third game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. SRH had gotten off to a poor start this season as they lost their first two games in a row before bouncing back to beat CSK in their last outing.

While SRH have only one win in their first three games so far this season, Gujarat Titans have been unbeaten so far.

The Titans got off to a winning start in the season with a victory against fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants before defeating Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in their next two matches to maintain their perfect record this year. The Hardik Pandya-led side has performed exceptionally well so far this season and have impressed with both the bat and the ball.

In their last game against Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans found themselves in a spot of bother towards the end in the 190-run chase despite a brilliant knock of 96 off 59 balls from Shubman Gill. However, Rahul Tewatia slammed back-to-back sixes on the final two deliveries of the game with 12 runs to get his team over the line in a stunning manner.

IPL 2022: Will Hardik Pandya make any changes? Gujarat Titans predicted XI against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Punjab Kings in a last-ball thriller in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Friday (April 08). All-rounder Rahul Tewatita stole the show for GT as he slammed back-to-back sixes on the last two balls of the match with 12 runs to get to take his side over the line and pull off a stunning win.

Asked to chase down a target of 90 runs, opener Shubman Gill got his side off to a brilliant start as he slammed a brilliant knock of 96 runs off just 59 deliveries. After losing his opening partner Matthew Wade (6) cheaply, Gill combined with Sai Sudarshan (35) to add 101 runs for the second wicket.

He then added 37 runs for the third wicket with skipper Hardik Pandya (27) to take his team closer to the target before the duo departed in quick succession. IPL 2022: 'It was Punjab Kings' game': Hardik Pandya reacts after Rahul Tewatia pulls off stunning win for GT

The unbeaten Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 16 of the IPL 2022 edition on Friday evening (April 08), at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. In the last ball of the high-scoring thriller, GT thrashed PBKS by six wickets to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition and occupy the second spot in the points table.

Opting to bowl first, Hardik & Co. removed Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal for cheap whereas Jonny Bairstow also departed early into the pavillion in his debut game for the franchise. Shikhar Dhawan, becoming the first Indian to slam 1,000-plus fours in T20s, got a start once again before perishing for a 30-ball 35 as the onus fell on Liam Livingstone. The Englishman didn't disappoint with his clean striking and effortless blows into the stands. His entertaining 27-ball 64 -- filled with 7 fours and 4 sixes at 237.04 -- propelled PBKS to 189-9 (reeling at 162-9 at one stage) along with vital cameos from Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Chahar. GT's Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers, with 3 for 22.

In reply, GT's innings was single-handedly held by Shubman. The right-hander continued from where he left versus the Delhi Capitals (DC) and played proper cricketing shots at a very healthy strike rate, despite losing Matthew Wade early. He struck a vital 101-run second-wicket stand with Sai Sudharshan (35) to take the game away from Punjab.

Mayank rotated his bowlers but to no avail and Chahar's rusty spell proved to be decisive (1 for 41). However, the spinner conceded only five runs off his penultimate over and also removed Sai to change the course of the contest. Gill, too, slowed down a bit towards the end of his innings as Kagiso Rabada removed him in the nervous 90s whereas Arshdeep Singh's last two overs brought Punjab back. Hardik also returned for a 25-ball 17 in the last over with 18 needed off the last five balls.

Nonetheless, Sharjah King Rahul Tewatia -- who had stunned Punjab in a 220-plus high-scorer in IPL 2020 -- once again came in the middle of Punjab and victory. His 3-ball 13*, with 12 off the last two deliveries, effortlessly sealed the deal for Gujarat in an emphatic run-chase.

IPL 2022: Hardik Pandya to change winning combination? Gujarat Titans predicted XI against Punjab Kings

Ishan Kishan was the most expensive player in the IPL 2022 mega auction (rejoining the Mumbai Indians for INR 15.25 crore). Making his IPL debut for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL), Ishan has come a long way and is now MI's mainstay at the top of the batting order.

From a young inexperienced player to being one of the vital cogs in MI line-up, Ishan has had quite a journey in the IPL. His most-successful season came during IPL 2020, where he amassed a staggering 516 runs at a whopping strike-rate of 145.76. Recently, Ishan spoke about all-rounder and former MI recruit Hardik Pandya's role in helping him develop into a better player.

During the Breakfast With Champions show, he told host Gaurav Kapur, Ishan recalled his early days at the MI camp and said, "I was with Hardik bhai and others all the time during the IPL and I see their work ethic as to how he is taking care of himself. They would sit me down and explain things to me for 30 minutes - what's important, what is not and what I am doing wrong. Hardik bhai's reputation... I mean all the seniors in the team would sit together. But I was the young one who was still finding his way."

"Hardik bhai was always like 'You leave him to me'. And he actually told me also that until you improve, we can't give you a match'. I also felt then that what they're saying is for my own benefit," Kishan added.

'Until you improve, we can't...': MI opener Ishan Kishan recalls how Hardik Pandya assisted him

All eyes were on Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2022 edition. There were many speculations whether he would don the role of an all-rounder or play only as a specialist batter-cum-captain for the new franchise, Gujarat Titans (GT).

After the opening two games for GT, Hardik has bowled his full quota of overs -- accounting for a scalp -- has shown maturity with the bat and as a leader. MSK Prasad, who was the chairman of selectors when Hardik was initially picked for Team India in early 2016, lavished praise on Hardik and said that 'wherever he does well, I feel proud like my own son has performed or done anything like that'.

“Whenever he does well, I feel proud and I feel like my own son has performed or done anything like that. It was very difficult to find a great all-rounder post the legendary Kapil Dev but someone who has got skills. The beauty about this boy is that his basics are very strong. His bowling basics, batting basics, fielding basics – everything is very strong. All that he needs to understand is to keep that part between his ears in a good stead and I am sure he will grow into a wonderful allrounder,” Prasad told cricket historian and broadcaster Boria Majumdar during his YouTube show.

"Now that he is not the same chubby-bubbly sort of a Hardik. Now he's married, settled down and got an added responsibility with Gujarat Titans. I'm sure it is definitely going to help him, Titans and Indian cricket. The way he led the other day – because I was there on the ground – he was very cool, calm and the manner in which he rotated the bowlers and placed fielders, everything was spot on. Even when the wickets were taken, he maintained his composure and I like that attitude," the former selector further pointed out.

Hardik was unable to take a wicket in the four overs and he ended up conceding 37 runs at an economy rate of 9.25. However, his return earned him a lot of praise from former India cricketers Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan who described it as a good sign for him and the national team.

Match 4 of the IPL 2022 edition saw two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) face each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (March 28). As both were eager to start off with a bang, it was a riveting contest which went down to the last over before Hardik Pandya's Gujarat emerged on top with a five-wicket win.

It was a topsy-turvy contest from the word go. Courtesy Mohammed Shami's early strikes, KL Rahul-led Lucknow were on the back foot with their big guns back in the pavillion (such as Rahul, Evin Lewis and Quinton de Kock) before Deepak Hooda-Ayush Badoni's fifties and Krunal Pandya's 13-ball 21* as the team posted 158-6. In reply, Gujarat rode on Matthew Wade-Hardik's knocks but were behind in the run-chase ahead of the final overs before David Miller's 30 (21) and Rahul Tewatia's match-winning 24-ball 40* propelled Gujarat to their maiden win.

During the game, there was a heartfelt moment between Lucknow teammates Krunal and Deepak. For the unversed, both Hooda and Krunal were involved in a huge controversy during last year's Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament, where they were a part of Team Baroda. Back then, Hooda had accused his state captain Krunal of bullying him and, later, went on to part ways and quit the team. Nonetheless, it seems everything is now in the past and the duo have let bygones be bygones.

During Gujarat's chase, Hooda caught opener Shubman Gill, off Dushmantha Chameera, as the right-hander fell for a 3-ball duck. Thus, an excited Krunal came running towards Hooda and the two hugged it out in the middle:

Match 4 of the IPL 2022 edition will see two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) face each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (March 28). After much wait, the two new sides will start their respective campaigns as the ardent IPL fans will be eager to see what they bring to the table overall.

Talking about the Lucknow franchise, they will be without some big players in the initial few games. The likes of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Marcus Stoinis will not be available. On the other hand, GT isn't missing a lot of players at present. They don't have Jason Roy, who pulled out of the season citing bio-bubble concerns. Alzarri Joseph will join them in a bit. However, GT's main worry is the lack of big Indian batters in the middle. All in all, it will be interesting to see how Hardik Pandya fills in the gaps and leads in his maiden season.

Match prediction for Lucknow vs Gujarat: Both sides will meet each other at the Wankhede Stadium, which hosted the season-opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The pitch was a bit dump on that day and run-scoring became easier as the game progressed, due to the dew factor. The two new captains will be eager to bowl first and a lot will fall upon the finishers from both the camps if the match goes down the wire in a high-scoring affair.

Tough to predict a winner. Lucknow is slightly more powerful in batting and have all-rounders in their mix. Meanwhile, Gujarat have a challenging set of bowlers.

LSG vs GT, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Lucknow Super Giants vs Gujarat Titans match?

Gujarat Titans (GT) will open their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign against fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (March 28). Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been roped in as the captain of the side and will be leading a team for the first time in his IPL career. Hardik has fired a warning to the other IPL sides ahead of his debut campaign as captain of the side.

Speaking in a video shared by Gujarat Titans ahead of their opening clash against Lucknow Super Giants, Hardik can be seen speaking about his ambitions for the season. The star all-rounder says he is going to aim for sporting success and would like to emulate none other than the legendary MS Dhoni.

Calling Dhoni his brother, Hardik said it's no secret that he would like to do what Dhoni has done with Chennai Super Kings as their captain over the years. Dhoni is one of the greatest leaders of all time in world cricket and is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL with four titles and nine finals to his name. Dhoni stepped down as CSK's captain ahead of IPL 2022 to hand over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja.

While Hardik makes it clear he wants to emulate Dhoni's success as captain, he also goes on to state that he has learnt a lot from his hero Sachin Tendulkar during his time with Mumbai Indians and the lessons from the Master Blaster will help him when he leads the Titans this season.

“I am not going to tell you from I come from. You probably know that. I will tell you where I am taking you. It's towards that peak called sporting success," Hardik said in the video.

“That sweet lofty spot, where grit lives with the grind, labour leads to luck. It is a range that my brother (MS Dhoni) has scaled and I have made no attempts to hide that I want to emulate him. It’s a place that my hero (Sachin Tendulkar) has owned and told me stories of how he got there,” he added.

Referring to his brother Krunal Pandya, who is now part of the Lucknow Super Giants side and good friend KL Rahul, who will be leading Lucknow, Hardik said he is aware that he is going to come up against some of his friends and sibling when he leads Gujarat Titans but is battle-hardened for the season.

The all-rounder warned the teams that he is aware the teams are slightly worried of his ability to take the bowlers to the cleaners and turn a game around for his team when he walks out on the field with a bat in hand.

“It is a journey that will pit me sometimes against my sibling, my soulmate and many of my closest friends. And like every flight, this too may have turbulence. But hey, look at me. If I have survived being in a national storm, a ban, a gruelling back injury and more, I know what it takes,” Hardik said.

“Confidence, flamboyance, whatever you term it... I just know that when I walk out with bat in hand, my opponents get tiny little chills in their spine, knowing that I can pull off a heist," he added.

A lot of focus will be on all-rounder Hardik Pandya when the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 kicks off on March 26. Pandya was selected by Gujarat Titans ahead of the mega auction and he will be leading the new franchise this season. While he has been cleared to bowl this time, he has played in the recent past mainly as a batsman due to various fitness issues and surgeries.

Former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri believes that if Pandya cannot start bowling again, he will not be able to make it spot in India squad ahead of the T20 World Cup just based on his batting.

"In the top five, there's a lot of muscle there. If anyone's occupying the position Nos. 5, 6 onwards, he'll have to bring that extra department to the game. That is why from Hardik's point of view, from India's point of view, from the Gujarat team's point of view, it's extremely important that he strings those two or three overs together because if he does and bowls with even limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team," Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

Shastri added that the No 6 position in the national side is now fixed for an all-rounder.

Ravi Shastri gives his verdict on Hardik Pandya's possible return to Team India

The IPL 2022 edition is set to get underway on March 26. Ahead of the new season, the ardent fans are excited to see how the two new teams shape up and compete with the rest. While KL Rahul will lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the Gujarat Titans (GT) will be led by local boy Hardik Pandya.

Ahead of the 15th season, all eyes are on Hardik as it remains to be seen if he will return back as an all-rounder. Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Hardik hasn't been in the scheme of things for Team India, mainly due to the all-rounder working on his fitness to return back to bowling in full flow. In the last two IPL seasons, Hardik didn't bowl a single over for the Mumbai Indians (MI). However, ex-Team India head coach Ravi Shastri feels the 28-year-old needs to bowl to be able to return back in the playing XI for India in white-ball formats.

'He'll have to bring....': Shastri claims Hardik needs to bowl in IPL 2022 to make India comeback

The stage is set for the commencement of the next edition of the IPL. The IPL 2022 edition will get underway on March 26 with the four-time winners and defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) up against last edition's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

This time around, the cash-rich league will see two more teams be a part of the tournament, such as the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Talking about the Gujarat franchise, they have a good mix of youth and experience and will be captained by Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Hardik, who soon became a regular in the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians' (MI) camp since his debut in IPL 2015, recently revealed his philosophy as captain ahead of the upcoming season.

"My philosophy for this season is that success is theirs and failure is mine," Hardik said during GT's jersey launch event recently. Here's the video of the same shared by the official Twitter handle of GT:

For the unversed, this will be the 28-year-old Hardik's first-ever season as an IPL captain. Hence, he will like to impress as a leader and also showcase his credentials once again as an all-round player. He has been out of action at the international level since the 2021 T20 World Cup, due to fitness concerns, and, thus, the forthcoming edition is really important for him to make a comeback into the Indian team at the earliest.

Here's the video of the same shared by the official Twitter handle of GT: Boht Hard, captain! 🤘😎 Apna time aa gaya…#GujaratTitans #SeasonOfFirsts pic.twitter.com/fM4dTGxsDN — Gujarat Titans (@gujarat_titans) March 17, 2022 × For the unversed, this will be the 28-year-old Hardik's first-ever season as an IPL captain. Success is theirs, failure is mine: Captain Hardik Pandya shares his philosophy ahead of IPL 2022

Injury-ravaged India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has got the all-clear to lead Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL after a general assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he bowled and also passed the 'Yo-Yo' Test comfortably.

The BCCI is checking on all its centrally contracted players -- injured or otherwise -- before the IPL and Pandya's performance, during his two days at the NCA, can also be seen as a good sign for Indian cricket.

"Let's make it clear. Fitness test clearance is only for those who are coming back from injury. In case of Hardik, it was about getting a general fitness assessment going into the gruelling IPL season," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"He is an asset and one needed to check his current fitness standards," he added.

In fact, in his fitness assessment module, the NCA team didn't even mandate him to bowl but the all-rounder apparently "insisted" on it to show that he is on track to make a comeback into the Indian team.

"He didn't need to bowl at NCA but he has bowled for considerable time and in the range of 135 kmph. On the second day, he crossed the Yo-Yo test with flying colours with a 17-plus score which is much above the cut-off level," the source said.

Prithvi Shaw fails 'Yo-Yo' test

However, as per information received one player, who would be slightly disappointed with his current fitness status is out-of-favour opener Prithvi Shaw.

The former U-19 World Cup winning captain, who is not a part of the central contract was also at the NCA to provide an update on his fitness status and the result wasn't exactly satisfactory.

The current Yo-Yo test qualification score is 16.5 for men and it has been learnt that the Mumbai opener has scored less than 15.

"These are just fitness updates. Obviously, it doesn't stop Prithvi from playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL. It's just a fitness parameter and not the be all and end all," the source said.

"Look, he has played three Ranji matches back-to-back. Once you play three first-class games on the bounce, the fatigue can also affect your Yo-Yo score," he added.

Shaw, of late, hasn't been among the fittest of Indian players and perhaps that is one of the reasons that of late, he has not been considered in any of the current senior teams across formats.

Even as a replacement, the team management, in the white-ball format, has preferred Mayank Agarwal as a reserve opener despite some underwhelming performances by the Karnataka man.

"If Prithvi is not being repeatedly considered, then perhaps his fitness standards aren't up to the mark, as in what is expected of a Team India player," the source said.
