Punjab Kings (PBKS) rode on Shikhar Dhawan's brilliant unbeaten 62 and a sensational cameo of 10-ball 30 from Liam Livingstone to thrash Gujarat Titans (GT) by 8 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday. It was a clinical performance from PBKS, who dominated the proceedings with both the bat and the ball against table-toppers GT at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

Asked to field first after losing the toss, Punjab Kings' bowlers got their team off to a dream start. While Shubman Gill was sent back after a run-out, Kagiso Rabada went on to pick up a four-wicket haul to run through the GT batting line-up. Rabada finished with excellent figures of 4/33 in his four overs to help his side restrict GT to 143/8 in 20 overs.

Punjab Kings lost opener Jonny Bairstow (1) cheaply in the run-chase before Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa joined hands in the middle and took control of the innings. Rajapaksa played a brilliant knock of 40 runs off 28 balls and added an 87-run stand for the second wicket with Dhawan.

After his departure, Livingstone was sent out to wrap up the chase early and the Englishman did exactly that as he slammed three back-to-back sixes in the 16th over from Mohammed Shami, including a monstrous hit of 117m. Livingstone scored 28 runs off the 16th over from Shami to help PBKS get over the line with as many as four overs to spare.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Punjab Kings thrash Gujarat Titans by 8 wickets

Gujarat Titans (GT) have found a hero down the order in all-rounder Rahul Tewatia, who has been sensational as a finisher for the franchise in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Tewatia has already produced several match-winning knocks in epic run-chases for Gujarat Titans helping them enjoy a stellar run in their debut IPL campaign.

Many were left shocked when Gujarat Titans had spent a whopping Rs 9 crore (INR 90 million) to secure the services of the all-rounder at the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year. However, Tewatia has managed to shut his critics down with a string of sensational performances with the willow.

In Gujarat Titans' last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Tewatia played a sensational cameo of unbeaten 43 off just 25 balls to help his side get over the line comfortably in a thrilling 171-run chase. Ahead of GT's game against Punjab Kings, Gavaskar hailed Tewatia for his finishing heroics this season.

Recalling his fabulous knock against Punjab Kings in IPL 2020 for his former team Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah, Gavaskar said that onslaught against Sheldon Cottrell in that game gave Tewatia the confidence to become the finisher that he is today. Tewatia has slammed five consecutive sixes against Cottrell in Sharjah to do the unthinkable for the Royals in IPL 2020.

“That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Tewatia has earned the tag of 'iceman' for Gujarat Titans this season after playing numerous cameos as a finisher for his current team. Gavaskar said Tewatia's composure and his ability to play his shots under pressure make him one of the finest finishers in the league at present.

“Reason why call him the ice-man is because he just stands there (at the crease) and shows no signs of shrugs or whatever. He’s composed, he’s anticipating the deliveries and knows which shots to play. In his mind, he’s ready that if the ball is (landing) there, he’s going to play his favourite shot. And when he middles (the ball), it’s always a six. That’s what makes him the ice-man because he’s not ruffled at all (with the situation),” Gavaskar explained.

Table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) will be looking to continue their stellar run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 when they lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Debutants GT are currently on a winning streak of five matches in the league having suffered only one defeat in the season so far.

While there are still glaring issues in their batting line-up, Gujarat Titans have one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament this year. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan and Alzarri Joseph have all been among the wickets while young uncapped pacer Yash Dayal has also impressed.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are currently placed eighth on the points table with eight points from nine matches. They defeated Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs in their last game and will be hoping to continue their momentum against GT.

Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted playing XIs

Match 48 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) lock horns with Mayank Agarwal's Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 03). While one team Gujarat has everything going right for them this season, Punjab have remained rusty and inconsistent. Hence, they have to pull up their socks in order to stay alive in the playoffs race.

Earlier, Punjab and Gujarat were involved in a humdinger of a clash when they had met in match 16 on April 8, at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, Mayank-led PBKS rode on Liam Livingstone's blistering 27-ball 64 to post 189-9. In reply, Hardik & Co. were in the run-chase courtesy of Shubman Gill's 96 but lost him and skipper Hardik as Punjab kept fighting hard to stay in the contest. Nonetheless, with 13 needed off 3 balls, Gujarat still won the game with Rahul Tewatia's two sixes in a row (and a wide-ball).

For Gujarat, they are defying odds and finding new heroes and unearthing new ways to emerge on top in every game. With one more win, they are very much set to qualify for the playoffs and, hence, will test the erratic Punjab line-up, who is still struggling to finalise a settled XI and haven't won two games on the trot so far.

Match prediction for Gujarat vs Punjab: It is expected to be a humid day. Expect toss and dew to play a part once again. Batting second team likely to walk away with a win? Gujarat are surely favourites and expected to romp past Punjab.

IPL 2022: Virat Kohli returns to form, ends 15-match drought with fifty against Gujarat Titans

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Hardik Pandya for his terrific captaincy in his debut stint with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and compared him to Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar believes captaincy has done to Hardik what it did to Rohit when he was handed over MI's leadership responsibilities in 2013.

Since taking over as MI's skipper in 2013, Rohit has transformed into one of the best batters in the world and is also the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five titles under his belt. Gavaskar believes Hardik has also started batting with more responsibility after taking over captaincy and is likely to recreate Rohit's success as captain.

Hardik, who is leading a team in the IPL for the first time, has enjoyed a brilliant start to his captaincy stint as Gujarat Titans are currently placed on the top of the points table with 14 points from eight matches so far this season. Gujarat Titans are the only team to have lost just one game so far this season.

"What I see with Hardik is exactly what happened to Rohit Sharma when he first got the captaincy of Mumbai Indians midway through the season (in IPL 2013). Suddenly (we saw) Rohit Sharma from playing those lovely cameos of 40s, 50s, and 60s now staying right till the end and taking responsibility. His shot selections became much better (with his captaincy)," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

Hardik has been instrumental as a batter in his side's success this season as he has notched up 305 runs in seven matches. He has also bowled when required and has four wickets to his name. Hardik has been batting up the order at no.3 for his team and has been excellent so far this season.

Gavaskar believes Pandya is on his way to repeating what Rohit had done with Mumbai Indians in 2013. The batting legend hailed Hardik's shot selection and believes Gujarat Titans are certain to do well this season under the star all-rounder's captaincy.

"Similarly, you can see that happening with Hardik, his shot selection is absolutely terrific. Of course, he`s an outstanding fielder and (that was the case with) Rohit Sharma, he was a brilliant fielder in the covers and close-in as well (in those days). So Pandya is showing those qualities too and that`s why Gujarat Titans are doing so well," Gavaskar added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they take on table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) in match no. 43 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (April 30). While RCB are currently on a losing streak of two matches, high-flying Gujarat Titans have so far lost only one game this season.

After a brilliant start to the season, Faf du Plessis-led RCB have faltered as they find themselves at the fifth spot on the points table with 10 points from nine matches. In their last outing, RCB were thrashed by 29 runs by Rajasthan Royals as Virat Kohli's woeful run with the bat continued in the tournament.

Besides Kohli, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell also has a couple of low-key scores in his last two matches.

From MS Dhoni to Parthiv Patel: Wicketkeepers with most dismissals in IPL

Sensational batting by Rahul Tewatia (40 not out off 21) and Rashid Khan (31 not out off 11) in the slog overs overcame pacer Umran Malik`s maiden fifer (5/25) as Gujarat Titans beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in a thrilling IPL 2022 match at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Wednesday.

Invited to bat first, brilliant fifties by Abhishek Sharma (65 off 42), Aiden Markram (56 off 40) and a late blitz by Shashank Singh (25 not out off 6) powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to 195/6 in 20 overs.

Chasing a big total, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill gave Gujarat a flying start. Saha, in particular, was very aggressive and dealt in boundaries, to take his team 59/0 at the end the powerplay.

It was Umran Malik, who gave SRH their first breakthrough by removing Shubman Gill (22) in the fourth ball of the 8th over. In the very next ball, he hit Hardik Pandya on the shoulder with a thunderbolt. In his second over, Umran again troubled Hardik (10) and eventually dismissed the Gujarat skipper with a short ball.

Both sides didn`t want to give any inch to their opposition at the halfway stage, GT had reached 91 for 2 with Saha and David Miller at the crease. While Malik was hogging all the limelight with his sheer pace, Saha continued his good job with the bat for Gujarat as he brought up a 28-ball fifty.

Just when it looked like Saha and David had brought GT back into the game, Malik bagged his wicket by dismissing Saha. Saha (68 off 38) failed to dig out a yorker from Malik, leaving GT to 122/3, needing 74 more in 40. Umran completed his demolition job of the GT batting order in his final over when he blew away David Miller and Abhinav Manohar in back to back deliveries to record his first five-wicket haul in the IPL.

Gujarat were in a spot of bother at 140/5 after 16 overs with Tewatia and Rasid in the middle. The duo went on to crack a slew of shots to break open the game. With 35 needed off 12 balls, the left-handed Tewatia used the left-arm angle to his advantage by smacking T Natarajan for a boundary and six - slog-sweep over cow corner.

Gujarat needed 22 runs in the last over of the innings and Tewatia began on the right note by clubbing Marco Jansen over deep midwicket for another six but could eke out only a single off the next ball. Rashid then showcased his pyrotechnics and managed to smash three sixes in the four balls to take their team over the victory line.

Earlier, invited to bat first, Mohammed Shami drifted down the leg side to SRH opener Abhishek Sharma twice in the opening over of the innings to concede 11 runs. Left arm pacer Yash Dayal, who came to bowl next over, was struck for two fours by Abhishek as Hyderabad raced to 22/0 after the end of 2 overs.

However, Shami made a brilliant comeback by dismissing SRH skipper Kane Williamson (5) on an incoming delivery. Rahul Tripathi (16 off 10), who came to bat next, was dropped by Rashid Khan when he was on 0. The right-handed batter took advantage of that reprieve and smashed Shami for a six and two fours off successive deliveries before the veteran pacer trapped him in front of the stumps to leave SRH at 44/2 after 5 overs.

From there on, Abhishek and Aiden Markram did the rebuilding job for Hyderabad.Though they were not able to find regular boundaries, both Abhishek and Markram rotated the strike as much as possible and kept the SRH run-rate steady.

After spending enough time in the middle, Abhishek decided to free his arms and hit his former teammate Rashid Khan for two sixes in the 12th over and brought up his half-century off 33-balls. On the other hand, Markram was targeting the likes of Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Ferguson for boundaries at regular intervals.

With five overs to go and both batters set, SRH were cruising towards a big score but an off-cutter from Joseph got rid of Abhishek, who departed for 65 off 42, leaving SRH at 140/3 in 15.1 overs. Nicholas Pooran (3), the next batter couldn`t do much and was dismissed by Shami in his comeback spell.

Despite losing quick wickets from the other end, Markram continued his innings with the same force and reached his half-century. But he couldn`t give the finishing touch to SRH innings, getting out on a slow ball from Yash Dayal on the last delivery of the 18th over.

Gujarat Titans pulled things back by getting rid of Washington Sundar, who was run out at the non-striker`s end but the likes of Shashank and Marco Jansen had saved their best for the last over.

Getting his first proper chance to bat despite featuring in the eleven in the last few games, Shashank made the most of the opportunity and smashed three sixes off Ferguson while Jansen also hit a maximum as 25 came off the final over and SRH finished with 195/6 in 20 overs.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Gujarat Titans beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in last-over thriller

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Umran Malik breathed fire with the ball in his side's clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday (April 27). The right-arm pacer, who is known for his raw pacer, terrorised Gujarat Titans batters with his scorching deliveries during their 196-run chase.

Malik drew the first blood for SRH by cleaning up Shubman Gill in his very first over before dismissing GT skipper Hardik Pandya, who was caught by Marco Jansen in his second over. The 22-year-old didn't stop there and continued to impress with his rapid pace as he troubled the GT batters.

The youngster from Jammu & Kashmir, who has been deemed by many as the next big thing in Indian cricket, produced an absolutely stunning yorker in the 14th over to rattle Wriddhiman Saha's stumps. Saha was batting on 68 and was looking in great touch but Malik outdid him with his sensational pace.

It was a brilliant yorker from the youngster who clocked a stunning 153 kmph which rocked Saha's stumps to send him packing. It was a lightning-fast yorker and Saha was a tad bit slow in bringing his bat down as Malik bagged his third wicket in the game.

Despite a fifty from Hardik Pandya and Anubhav Manohar's chancy 21-ball 35, SRH managed to restrict GT for 162-7. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan's two wickets each led the show for the 2016 champions.

GT vs SRH, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match?

Gujarat Titans (GT) held onto their nerves in yet another last-over thriller to beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 8 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (April 23). With the win, Gujarat Titans extended their unbeaten run to three matches and regained their top spot on the IPL 2022 points table.

It was once again a comprehensive all-round performance from the Titans, who were boosted by captain Hardik Pandya's return ahead of the crucial clash. Hardik had missed the last game against CSK owing to an injury but made a thumping return as he went on to play a captain's knock to help his side bag another win on the trot.

Opting to bat first, Gujarat Titans got off to a shaky start as Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply on just 7 off 5 balls before Wriddhiman Saha (25) combined with skipper Hardik to post a 75-run stand for the second wicket. While Saha played the anchor's role with a run-a-ball 25, Hardik smashed a stunning 67 off 49 balls laced with 4 fours and two sixes.

Pandya's half-century and cameos from David Miller (27 off 20) and Rahul Tewatia (17 off 12) propelled Gujarat Titans to a fighting total of 156/8 in 20 overs. In reply, KKR were bundled out for 148/8 as they fell 8 runs short after a stellar bowling performance from the Titans.

KKR's decision to open the batting with Sam Billings and Sunil Narine backfired as Shami continued his exceptional run to dismiss both cheaply on 4 and 5 respectively. It was young Yash Dayal who went on to impress as he got the better of KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, who was sent packing on 12 off 15 balls before dismissing Rinku Singh on 35 off 28 balls.

Rashid Khan also bowled an excellent spell of 2/22 off his four overs. Andre Russell was the lone warrior for KKR and batted till the last over but was sent back by Alzarri Joseph on the second delivery of the 20th over as he failed to take KKR over the line in the 157-run chase.

While KKR have no lost their last four games in a row, Gujarat Titans continued their magnificent run reaching 12 points on the points table with just one defeat in seven matches so far this season.

As a result, Rashid became the first overseas spinner since Sunil Narine (149 wickets) to take 100 wickets in the IPL.

IPL 2022: Rashid Khan becomes second overseas spinner to achieve massive milestone in Indian Premier League

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell added a unique feat to his already illustrious career as he took four wickets in the final over of the innings against Gujarat Titans on Saturday.

This was the first time that any cricketer has taken four wickets in a spell of one over or less as Russell ended the match with figures of 1-0-5-4 to restrict GT to a below-par total of 156.

Previously, former KKR cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla had taken 3/6 against Delhi Daredevils way back in 2008 after bowling just five balls in his spell while Rajasthan Royals spinner Shreyas Gopal took three wickets for just 12 runs in a spell of one over against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019.

Gujarat Titans looked well set for a big total with Hardik Pandya leading by example with a gritty 49-ball-67 to steady the innings with partnerships with Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller.

However, they lost the plot completely towards the latter half of the innings as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Tim Southee started the fightback for KKR as he dismissed Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan.

But the icing on the cake was Russell who took the wickets of Abhinav Manohar and Lockie Ferguson on the first two balls of the final over and he came back brilliantly after conceding a boundary on the fourth ball of the over and took the wickets of Rahul Tewatia and Yash Dayal with the last two balls.

This was also the second instance that any IPL side has scored less than 30 runs in the final five overs of the innings after losing two or less wickets in the first 15 overs of their innings.

IPL 2022: Andre Russell achieves unique feat with four-wicket haul in final over against Gujarat Titans

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be looking to bring an end to their three-match losing streak when they go up against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (April 23). After a brilliant start to their campaign with three wins in their first four games, KKR's campaign has hit the roadblock with three defeats in a row.

Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, have enjoyed a stellar campaign so far in IPL 2022 as they sit at the second spot on the points table with ten points from six matches. Captain Hardik Pandya had missed GT's last game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but they still managed to secure a thrilling three-wicket win in the game.

Chasing a target of 170 runs, GT looked all but out of the game after being reduced to 16/3 inside the first four overs against CSK. However, David Miller slammed a stunning unbeaten 94 while stand-in skipper Rashid Khan played a sensational cameo of 21-ball 40 to turn the game in their favour and take them home with a ball to spare.

Gujarat Titans will be looking to bag their third win on the trot against Iyer-led KKR at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. KKR, on the other hand, came close but lost by 7 runs in their last game against Rajasthan Royals as they failed to chase down the target of 218 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted playing XIs

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in match no.35 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 23). Both the teams have had contrasting starts to their respective campaigns as Gujarat Titans currently sit on the second spot on the points table with 10 points from six matches while KKR are at the seventh spot with six points from seven matches.

After three back-to-back defeats in the last three games, KKR will be looking to bounce back to winning ways against a high-flying Gujarat Titans on Saturday. The Shreyas Iyer-led side had started their campaign in an emphatic manner with three wins in their first four games before losing their next three matches in a row.

In their last outing, KKR came close but failed to get over the line in a 218-run chase against Rajasthan Royals after Yuzvendra Chahal bagged a hat-trick in a game-changing 17th over. However, KKR would have taken a lot of positives from the game as skipper Iyer and opener Aaron Finch both fired with the bat.

While Finch scored a sublime 58 off 28 balls, Iyer notched up a quickfire 85 off 51 balls. Both the batters had struggled in their last few games and their return to form is a great sign for KKR. However, their bowling remains a concern as wickets have dried up for Umesh Yadav while Pat Cummins has been far from consistent.

Gujarat are currently at the second spot with 10 points from six games and a win against KKR on Saturday will help them regain the top spot on the points table. Hardik's return will be crucial for the side as they clearly lacked balance in their batting line-up against CSK and will be hoping to remain clinical against KKR.

KKR vs GT, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans clash?

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was keenly awaited. The excitement for each year's edition knows no boundaries. This time around, it went a level up as the ardent cricket fans welcomed the two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league.

The BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two more teams with an aim to give more opportunities to youngsters, some big names who often got sidelined and fans plenty more to cheer for. While a nervy start was expected from both Gujarat and Lucknow in IPL 2022, the two teams have taken the 15th season by storm and have announced their arrivals with a bang. Both GT and LSG have been the giant killers of IPL 2022, surpassing some big teams and surprising many without breaking much sweat.

1) Team compositions

Complete squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Abhinav Sadarangani, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Noor Ahmad, R Sai Kishore, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, Varun Aaron, Rahul Tewatia, Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Darshan Nalkande, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sai Sudarshan

Complete squad of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Looking at both squads, it is safe to say that the newbies didn't get bogged down in the two-day mega auction, held in mid-February. They came with a clear plan: to fill their squads with multi-dimensional players, seasoned bowlers, a mix of domestic talents and foreign players. Their smart team composition is helping them reap rewards in the IPL 2022 edition so far.

2) Newness, fresh minds, new captains

Starting from scratch often helps, especially if it is going the distance in a big-ticket T20 tournament like the IPL. Both Gujarat and Lucknow have benefitted from a fresh and positive dressing room environment created since the beginning of the 15th season. With the leadership group being expanded in Team India, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have also put their best foot forward to showcase their credentials as GT and LSG skippers, respectively.

Meanwhile, the inclusions of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten (for Gujarat) and Gautam Gambhir, Andy Bichel, Andy Flower (for Lucknow) in the coaching setup have led to role clarity for players, keeping things simple, sticking to basics, resorting to smart and tactical matchups. The presence of such stalwarts have given enough cushion to both the young captains and their respective players.

3) Playing fearlessly, without any past baggage

Both Lucknow and Gujarat have expressed themselves freely on the field, having no past baggage. While it helped both sides to settle their nerves by locking horns with each other on debut, they have only grown from strength to strength from thereon. In addition, the two teams have gained immensely with the repeated failures of two of the most successful IPL teams; i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Thus, they will hope to go the distance courtesy the strong foundation laid down and build something special for themselves in the IPL, where the eight original franchises have already carved out their own space and identity.

For now, it is just the start. But the start surely has been promising. Let's see what else is in store for the two newbies as they strive hard to gain prominence, value and recognition in the cash-rich league.

How newbies Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants have been the giant-killers in IPL 2022

The big-hitting David Miller blazed away to a 51-ball 94 as Gujarat Titans pulled off an incredible come-from-behind three-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL here on Sunday.

Leading the side in the absence of an injured Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan supported Miller with a 21-ball 40 as GT recovered from 16 for three, and then 48 for four, to seal one the greatest comebacks in the history of the league.

GT were set a target of 170. Needing 48 in 18 balls after an excellent 17th over by Dwayne Bravo, Rashid, inspired by Miller's monster sixes, hit Chris Jordan for three of his own maximums.

GT collected 25 runs from the over to reduce the equation to a gettable 23 from 12 balls.

More drama awaited the seesawing battle as Bravo dismissed Rashid and Alzarri Joseph off successive balls in the penultimate over.

Strangely enough, CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja handed the ball to the battered Jordan for the final over, hoping that his experience and ability to wide yorkers would do the job for the yellow brigade. However, Miller had other ideas as he completed the job with a ball to spare.

In all, Miller smashed eight boundaries and six sixes, while Rashid had three maximums and two fours to his name during a match-turning partnership of 70 runs.

Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad finally found form with a 48-ball 73 before Gujarat Titans pulled things back to stop Chennai Super Kings at 169 for five. Gujarat Titans lost early wickets in their chase of 170, reeling at 16 for three in the fourth over.

Shubman Gill, who has played a few influential knocks this season, was out for a golden duck in the first over before the out-of-sorts Vijay Shankar too joined the former in the dugout.

Bowling with an action that is far from conventional, off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana sent back Abhinav Manohar (12) after accounting Shankar. Wriddhiman Saha's (11 off 18 balls) painstaking stay in the middle was brought to an end by CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja as GT slipped to 48 for four in the eighth over.

But then, Miller and Rashid joined forces to seal the game in favour of their team. This was after the Titans bowlers did exceedingly well in the last six overs, conceding only 45 after a 92-run third-wicket stand between Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu (46 in 31 balls).

Invited to bat, Gaikwad, who notched up his maiden IPL fifty of the season, added 92 off just 56 balls with Rayadu, rallying after CSK were in a spot of bother at 32 for two in the sixth over.

Gaikwad's knock was studded with five fours and as many sixes as he anchored the innings.

Rayadu hammered four boundaries and two sixes, playing second fiddle to Gaikwad, who was in his elements. After a sedate start, Gaikwad, in search of vital runs after a prolonged run of poor scores, upped the ante in the fourth over.

The 'local boy' flicked Yash Dayal (1/40) for his first maximum over the deep backward square region and then got a boundary off a top-edge. Gaikwad flicked pacer Mohammed Shami (1/20) for a boundary and then launched into Alzarri Joseph (2/34), smashing him for another maximum over mid-wicket. The elegant right-handed batter mixed caution with aggression and played a stylish pull shot over deep square-leg for a maximum off Joseph, who gave away 15 runs in the 11th over.

Gaikwad completed his fifty with a cheeky single.

In the company of Rayudu, he launched into Dayal and hit him for two boundaries and a six in the 12th over, from which 19 runs came.

Gaikwad then tore into Lockie Ferguson (0/46), pulling him for a six before playing an elegant cover drive to set it for CSK, who were 113 for two at that stage of the innings with seven overs still to go.

However, after threatening to score above 180-185, CSK lost the plot after losing Rayadu and Gaikwad in quick succession, slipping to 131 for four. While Rayadu gave a sitter to Vijay Shankar at sweeper-cover, in a bid to score quickly, Gaikwad perished in the 17th over.

A late onslaught by skipper Ravindra Jadeja (22 not out off 12 balls) and Shivam Dube (19) helped CSK close in on 170, with 18 runs coming in the final over bowled by Ferguson.

IPL 2022: David Miller, Rashid Khan shine as Gujarat Titans defeat Chennai Super Kings by three wickets

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ravindra Jadeja and star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo were left fuming after teammate Shivam Dube misjudged David Miller's catch during his side's clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (April 17). Gujarat Titans defeated CSK by 3 wickets after successfully chasing down the target of 170 runs in a last-over thriller.

Batting first at the MCA Stadium in Pune, CSK rode on opener Ruturaj Gaikwad's 73 off 48 balls and Ambati Rayudu's 31-ball 46 to post a challenging total of 169 runs on the board in 20 overs. Despite getting off to a great start with the ball, CSK pacers faltered towards the end as a sensational cameo from Rashid Khan and David Miller's stunning knock took GT over the line in their run chase.

During Gujarat Titans' run-chase, CSK skipper Jadeja and Bravo were left furious after Dube's poor effort on the field. The incident happened in the 17th over of Gujarat Titans' innings when Miller mistimed a pull shot off the bowling of Bravo. The ball flew towards Dube at the midwicket region, who failed to judge the flight of the ball and didn't go for the catch.

Instead of attempting a dive and going all out for the catch, Dube wasted the half-chance as he stopped midway through run up and stopped the ball from going for a boundary after it had bounced off the ground. His poor effort left CSK skipper Jadeja fuming as he was spotted throwing his cap away in frustration.

Bravo was also left unhappy after the effort and was seen signalling another fielder to move to Dube's spot. The all-rounder was seemingly not happy and his frustration was justified as Miller went on to play a match-winning knock of unbeaten 94 off just 51 balls to help GT secure a thrilling win.

CSK were well in control of the game till the 17th over of GT's run chase with the Rashid-led side requiring 48 runs to win off the last three overs. Rashid was dismissed by Bravo in the 19th over after scoring 40 off 21 balls but did enough to allow Miller to take his side over the line comfortably. IPL 2022: Updated points table after Gujarat Titans beat Chennai Super Kings by three wickets

In a huge blow to Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of their clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, skipper Hardik Pandya was ruled out due to a groin issue. The star all-rounder has been in terrific form for his new side DC with the bat and the ball and has had a magnificent start to his captaincy stint.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan is leading Gujarat Titans in their ongoing encounter against CSK in Hardik's absence. The ace spinner revealed Hardik had issues in his groin area and the franchise didn't want to take a chance with his fitness as the all-rounder remains a vital cog in their wheel.

Rashid expressed confidence that it's a minor issue and Hardik will hopefully be back in the next game for Gujarat Titans. "Bit of stiffness in the groin area for Hardik, so as a team we didn't want to take a chance. He will rest and hopefully be back for the next game," said the spinner at the toss after opting to bowl against CSK.

Hardik was roped in by Gujarat Titans as their skipper ahead of the new season after being released by Mumbai Indians. GT paid a huge sum of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) to secure the services of the star all-rounder and he has repaid the faith shown by the team management with brilliant performances.

In five games so far this season, Hardik has notched up 228 runs and picked up four wickets for his side while leading them to four wins in five matches. Gujarat Titans have faced their only defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad this season and are currently sitting at the top spot on the points table with eight points.

IPL 2022: Rahmanullah Gurbaz to debut? Gujarat Titans predicted XI against Chennai Super Kings

After a woeful start to their campaign with four defeats in a row, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) brought an end to their losing streak with a win against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last game. Ravindra Jadeja's stint as captain has gotten off to a shaky start but CSK will be hoping to continue their winning momentum after getting off the mark against RCB.

The four-time champions will be up against high-flying Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), who have been exceptional so far this season. The debutants have managed four wins in five matches and are currently sitting on top of the IPL 2022 points table. While CSK defeated RCB in their last game, Gujarat Titans thrashed Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs in their last game.

CSK have glaring issues in their batting line-up as opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is yet to find his mojo while the likes of Moeen Ali, skipper Jadeja and Ambati Rayudu among others are yet to make an impact with the bat. Their bowling has also lacked the edge in the absence of Deepak Chahar but Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana has revived the attack with his wicket-taking ability.

Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube had put on a show against RCB with stunning half-centuries and CSK will be hoping for a similar performance from the duo against GT, who have an in-form bowling attack consisting of the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan.

For Gujarat Titans, their top-order remains a huge concern as opener Matthew Wade has failed to fire so far this season while Shubman Gill after two back-to-back half-centuries has been dismissed on low-key scores in his last two innings. Their bowling attack is expected to play a key role for GT against CSK at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Sunday.

Stats

Gujarat Titans have been brilliant with the ball during the powerplay overs with the most number of wickets taken by any team in that phase – 12. However, the trio of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali also enjoy a good record against Rashid Khan and as a result, a lot of responsibility will rest on the shoulders of Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson to provide the breakthrough.

Shivam Dube has a strike rate of 199.28 against fast bowlers in the middle overs.

Trivia

While CSK have been experiencing a torrid time in the IPL 2022 till now, Shivam Dube has been a mainstay in their batting. The all-rounder has already scored 207 runs in this year’s competition till now and he is just 24 runs away from his previous best season tally.

On the other hand, Gujarat Titans have relied heavily on their bowling and Lockie Ferguson has been a top performer for the debutants. The New Zealand fast bowler has already taken 10 wickets in the powerplay phase with an impressive strike rate of 10.80.

IPL 2022: Devon Conway to return? Chennai Super Kings predicted XI against Gujarat Titans

Skipper Hardik Pandya enhanced his reputation as a number four batter with an unbeaten 87 off 52 balls as Gujarat Titans trounced Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs in the Indian Premier League here on Thursday.

Hardik, whose strike rate and approach has been questioned at his new position, played responsibly when it was needed before displaying the power he is known for to lead Titans to 192 for four after being sent into bat.

The in form Jos Buttler (54 off 24) provided another flying start to Royals but the rest of the batting unit did not deliver as the innings ended at 155 for nine in 20 overs.

Young left-arm pacer Yash Dayal (3/40) impressed on IPL debut while Lockie Ferguson (3/23)) got the important wicket of Buttler, who was deceived by the New Zealander's slow yorker after a series of quick deliveries.

Ferguson also dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin in the same over after the senior India spinner was promoted to bat at number three. The other notable contribution to Royals' innings came from Shimron Hetmyer (29 off 17). From 56 for one, Royals slipped to 90 for five and could not recover from there on. Hardik, who has been bowling regularly this season, also picked up a wicket but he took himself off the attack in the 18th over after feeling a little discomfort in the groin area.

With their fourth win in five games, Titans displaced Royals from the top of the points table. It was Royals' second loss in five games.

Earlier, Hardik found an able ally in Abhinav Manohar (43 off 28) before he exploded in the company of David Miller (31 not out off 14) to power the IPL debutants to their highest score of the tournament.

Hardik and Manohar shared an 86-run stand for the fourth wicket before the skipper and Miller blasted 53 off 25 balls to end the innings in style. After being put in to bat, Gujarat found themselves reeling at 53 for three.

While Hardik's 52-ball knock was studded with eight fours and four sixes, Manohar struck four fours and two maximums. Miller, who overall hit five boundaries and a six, fetched 21 runs in the penultimate over off Kuldeep Sen (1/51).

To start with, Hardik was aggressive on pacer Kuldeep as he hammered him for three successive boundaries in the fifth over. He then fetched his first maximum in the seventh over, when he clobbered Riyan Parag over his head.

The duo upped the ante when Manohar launched into inform Yuzvendra Chahal, hammering him for a four and maximum, a lofted inside-out drive over cover.

The two then took on Kuldeep, hammering him for three boundaries in the 14th over, where Hardik also notched up his fifty, with a cut towards backward point fence.

And in the next over, Hardik clobbered two successive maximums off seasoned spinner Ashwin, who leaked 16 runs in the over. With Titans reaching 130 for three in 15 overs, the stage was set for a big total.

After Manohar departed, Miller ably supported the skipper. Titans lost opener Matthew Wade (12) cheaply, courtesy a direct hit by Rassie Van Der Dussen from cover. Titans slipped to 15/2, as Vijay Shakar (2) also perished cheaply and then a rusty looking Shubman Gill (13) became Parag's first victim, after he was caught by Shimron Hetymyer at the long-on fence.

Royals missed the services of lead pacer Trent Boult who was ruled out of the game due to a niggle.
