Delhi Capitals will look to continue their winning run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they take on Gujarat Titans in Mumbai on Saturday. The Rishabh Pant-led side rode good performances from Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav to beat Mumbai Indians in their season opener.

It was a mixed outing for Delhi Capitals in their first game as Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets but the other bowlers failed to contain the Mumbai batsmen. In the batting department, a number of batsmen got good starts but it came down to the lower middle order to salvage the victory.

IPL 2022: Return of Lungi Ngidi? Delhi Capitals predicted XI against Gujarat Titans

Match 4 of the IPL 2022 edition saw two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) face each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (March 28). As both were eager to start off with a bang, it was a riveting contest which went down to the last over before Hardik Pandya's Gujarat emerged on top with a five-wicket win.

It was a topsy-turvy contest from the word go. Courtesy Mohammed Shami's early strikes, KL Rahul-led Lucknow were on the back foot with their big guns back in the pavillion (such as Rahul, Evin Lewis and Quinton de Kock) before Deepak Hooda-Ayush Badoni's fifties and Krunal Pandya's 13-ball 21* as the team posted 158-6. In reply, Gujarat rode on Matthew Wade-Hardik's knocks but were behind in the run-chase ahead of the final overs before David Miller's 30 (21) and Rahul Tewatia's match-winning 24-ball 40* propelled Gujarat to their maiden win.

During the game, there was a heartfelt moment between Lucknow teammates Krunal and Deepak. For the unversed, both Hooda and Krunal were involved in a huge controversy during last year's Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament, where they were a part of Team Baroda. Back then, Hooda had accused his state captain Krunal of bullying him and, later, went on to part ways and quit the team. Nonetheless, it seems everything is now in the past and the duo have let bygones be bygones.

During Gujarat's chase, Hooda caught opener Shubman Gill, off Dushmantha Chameera, as the right-hander fell for a 3-ball duck. Thus, an excited Krunal came running towards Hooda and the two hugged it out in the middle:

Earlier, Krunal had even given a pat on Hooda's back after the former replaced him in the middle following the right-hander's dismissal during Lucknow's innings. Both of them had a good game (Krunal and Hooda also claimed a wicket each) but couldn't take their team to a winning start.

Post Lucknow's close defeat, captain Rahul said at the post-match presentation, "It was a phenomenal game. What a way to start the campaign. IPL 2022: Krunal, Hooda hug it out during Lucknow Super Giants' face-off vs Gujarat Titans - WATCH

Rahul Tewatia blasted an impactful 40 off 24 balls after Mohammad Shami's sensational new ball spell to set up a five-wicket win for Gujarat Titans against Lucknow Super Giants in the battle of IPL debutants here on Monday.

Deepak Hooda (55 off 41 balls) and Ayush Badoni (54 off 41 balls) smashed quick-fire half centuries to help Super Giants recover to a respectable 158/6 after Shami (3/25) blew away their top-order.

Needing 68 off the last 30 balls, Titans were up against it but Tewatia (40 not out), David Miller (30 off 21) and IPL debutant Abhinav Manohar (15 not out off 7) pulled off a memorable win for their team with two balls to spare.

In pursuit of 159, Gujarat were down and out at 78/4 before Miller and Tewatia forged a match-winning 60 run-stand off just 34 balls.

They were brutal on Deepak Hooda, as they fetched 22 runs in the 16th over, with each hitting one six and one four. And then Tewatia hammered a six and two fours in the next over, where Gujarat amassed 17 runs, to bring down the equation to 29 from 18 balls.

Avesh removed Miller in the 18th over to raise his side's hopes, but Manohar and Tewatia, who hit five boundaries and two maximums, saw the team home.

Skipper Hardik Pandya (33) and Matthew Wade (30) forged 57 runs for the third wicket to take the innings forward after two early losses.

Earlier, Hooda and IPL debutant Badoni, who had endured plenty of struggles in the past three years, took Super Giants to a respectable score after Shami reduced them to 29 for four.

But then Hooda (55) and Badoni (54), took the onus on themselves and resurrected the Lucknow innings with an 87-run-stand off 68 balls.

Hooda struck six fours and two sixes in his 41-ball knock while Badoni hammered four boundaries and three maximums in his 41 ball innings.

After Hooda was trapped in front of the wicket by Rashid Khan (1/27) in the 16th over, Badoni, who is a product despite the system, upped the ante and played shots at will. Badoni hit the likes of Rashid Khan and Lockie Ferguson for a six and that should stay in his memory for life.

As both teams were eager to start off the season with a win, it was Hardik Pandya-led GT franchise that went past the finish line, courtesy five wickets in pursuit of 159, in a tight contest.

There were plenty of moments in the marquee encounter, which was held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. It saw two best friends KL Rahul and Hardik square off as captains whereas the Pandya brothers also competed against each other for the first time in IPL history. In addition, the Indian cricket fans enjoyed watching Krunal-Deepak Hooda bury their hatchet and play together in the Lucknow franchise.

In chase of a challenging 159, Hardik & Co. had lost opener Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar in a flash. However, they had their experienced duo -- Matthew Wade and captain Hardik -- in the middle at the halfway stage. Needing 87 off 60 balls, Hardik took on his elder brother Krunal on the first ball of the 11th over and paid the price; being caught at the deep for a 28-ball 33.

Dismissing his young brother, Krunal's reaction went viral as he didn't celebrate the wicket and hesitantly hugged his teammates. Here's the video:

Match 4 of the IPL 2022 edition will see two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) face each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (March 28). After much wait, the two new sides will start their respective campaigns as the ardent IPL fans will be eager to see what they bring to the table overall.

Talking about the Lucknow franchise, they will be without some big players in the initial few games. The likes of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Marcus Stoinis will not be available. On the other hand, GT isn't missing a lot of players at present. They don't have Jason Roy, who pulled out of the season citing bio-bubble concerns. Alzarri Joseph will join them in a bit. However, GT's main worry is the lack of big Indian batters in the middle. All in all, it will be interesting to see how Hardik Pandya fills in the gaps and leads in his maiden season.

Match prediction for Lucknow vs Gujarat: Both sides will meet each other at the Wankhede Stadium, which hosted the season-opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The pitch was a bit dump on that day and run-scoring became easier as the game progressed, due to the dew factor. The two new captains will be eager to bowl first and a lot will fall upon the finishers from both the camps if the match goes down the wire in a high-scoring affair.

Tough to predict a winner. Lucknow is slightly more powerful in batting and have all-rounders in their mix. Meanwhile, Gujarat have a challenging set of bowlers.

IPL 2022: KL Rahul dismissed for golden duck on debut for Lucknow Super Giants

Gujarat Titans (GT) will open their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign against fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (March 28). Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been roped in as the captain of the side and will be leading a team for the first time in his IPL career. Hardik has fired a warning to the other IPL sides ahead of his debut campaign as captain of the side.

Speaking in a video shared by Gujarat Titans ahead of their opening clash against Lucknow Super Giants, Hardik can be seen speaking about his ambitions for the season. The star all-rounder says he is going to aim for sporting success and would like to emulate none other than the legendary MS Dhoni.

Calling Dhoni his brother, Hardik said it's no secret that he would like to do what Dhoni has done with Chennai Super Kings as their captain over the years. Dhoni is one of the greatest leaders of all time in world cricket and is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL with four titles and nine finals to his name. Dhoni stepped down as CSK's captain ahead of IPL 2022 to hand over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja.

While Hardik makes it clear he wants to emulate Dhoni's success as captain, he also goes on to state that he has learnt a lot from his hero Sachin Tendulkar during his time with Mumbai Indians and the lessons from the Master Blaster will help him when he leads the Titans this season.

“I am not going to tell you from I come from. You probably know that. I will tell you where I am taking you. It's towards that peak called sporting success," Hardik said in the video.

“That sweet lofty spot, where grit lives with the grind, labour leads to luck. It is a range that my brother (MS Dhoni) has scaled and I have made no attempts to hide that I want to emulate him. It’s a place that my hero (Sachin Tendulkar) has owned and told me stories of how he got there,” he added.

Referring to his brother Krunal Pandya, who is now part of the Lucknow Super Giants side and good friend KL Rahul, who will be leading Lucknow, Hardik said he is aware that he is going to come up against some of his friends and sibling when he leads Gujarat Titans but is battle-hardened for the season.

The all-rounder warned the teams that he is aware the teams are slightly worried of his ability to take the bowlers to the cleaners and turn a game around for his team when he walks out on the field with a bat in hand.

“It is a journey that will pit me sometimes against my sibling, my soulmate and many of my closest friends. And like every flight, this too may have turbulence. But hey, look at me. If I have survived being in a national storm, a ban, a gruelling back injury and more, I know what it takes,” Hardik said.

“Confidence, flamboyance, whatever you term it... I just know that when I walk out with bat in hand, my opponents get tiny little chills in their spine, knowing that I can pull off a heist," he added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 3 of the ongoing IPL 2022 edition at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday evening (March 27). It was a high-scoring contest which went down the wire before the Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab outfit emerged on top by five wickets in a thrilling fashion.

Talking about the contest, Mayank & Co. opted to bowl first. Riding on new skipper Faf du Plessis' masterclass (57-ball 88), former captain Virat Kohli's 29-ball 41* and Dinesh Karthik's 32* (14), RCB posted a mammoth 205 for 2 in 20 overs. However, they couldn't defend the total courtesy a combined batting performance from Punjab's top guns (Mayank, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan and Odean Smith) as PBKS got off to a flying start in IPL 2022.

After the contest, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opined on Kohli's unbeaten knock. "He looked good. This was like that old vintage Virat Kohli. He started with a bang and that's what he can do whenever he wants. He took on Brar. The last time he had issues, he was dismissed. He hit him for a six. He hit the boundaries and then took a backseat," Chopra told Star Sports.

"Not that he was not scoring quickly enough. It's just that he realised that he had to play the supporting role to Faf du Plessis. He understood that 'I may have been the hero in many a movie, but right now I have to play the role of a hero's brother'.

"He let Faf du Plessis take centre stage but he was right till the end, he scored at close to 150. He was scoring at a fair clip but wasn't really greedy to get onto the strike as quickly as possible," he added.

Chopra also opened up on Kohli reuniting with Team India's former batting coach Sanjay Bangar in the RCB setup. For the unversed, Bangar is serving as RCB's head coach for IPL 2022. In this regard, he pointed out, "I am delighted to see this Virat Kohli because, for the last six months, we have seen a different sort of Virat Kohli. He was in one mood - to defend everything. There was a process that he followed all this while and he is back to that now. There is something about Sanjay Bangar and Virat Kohli. There is some chemistry there that brings the best out of Kohli."

Kohli struck at 141.38 during his unbeaten knock versus PBKS. He will be eager to continue in a similar stead in RCB's next game, where they face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the same venue on Wednesday.

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will make their Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against fellow debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (March 28). Lucknow Super Giants managed to build a formidable squad capable of challenging for the title at the mega auction last year but are set to miss some of their key players for the opener.

Lucknow Super Giants will be without two of their best all-rounders - Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis for their season-opener against Gujarat Titans while another all-rounder Kyle Mayers is also unavailable for selection. While Stoinis is likely to miss the first couple of weeks of action in IPL 2022 due to international duty, both Holder and Mayers are likely to be available for selection later this week.

Lucknow Super Giants had been handed a huge blow ahead of the start of the season after England pacer Mark Wood was ruled out of the competition due to an injury. He has been replaced by Australian fast bowler Andrew Tye but there is no update on Tye's availability for the opener against Gujarat Titans.

In the absence of the likes of Stoinis, Holder and Mayers, Lucknow's pace attack looks thin as Avesh Khan and Sri Lanka's Dushmantha Chameera are the only prominent names in the squad. While the du is expected to feature against GT, Lucknow might play Indian pacer Ankit Rajpoot as the third fast bowler in the playing XI.

Despite missing the services of Stoinis and Holder, Lucknow have plenty of options available in the all-rounders' department with the likes of Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda and Krishnappa Gowtham in their squad. All three are likely to make the cut in the XI along with Manish Pandey and Manan Vohra in the middle-order.

Captain KL Rahul is likely to open the batting with South African wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock, who will also keep the wickets for the franchise, as confirmed before by their mentor Gautam Gambhir. LSG will be looking to get off to a winning start and set the ball rolling in their debut IPL campaign.

Holder to Stoinis: Overseas stars who will miss Lucknow Super Giants vs Gujarat Titans clash in IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 edition is set to get underway on March 26. Ahead of the new season, the ardent fans are excited to see how the two new teams shape up and compete with the rest. While KL Rahul will lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the Gujarat Titans (GT) will be led by local boy Hardik Pandya.

Ahead of the 15th season, all eyes are on Hardik as it remains to be seen if he will return back as an all-rounder. Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Hardik hasn't been in the scheme of things for Team India, mainly due to the all-rounder working on his fitness to return back to bowling in full flow. In the last two IPL seasons, Hardik didn't bowl a single over for the Mumbai Indians (MI). However, ex-Team India head coach Ravi Shastri feels the 28-year-old needs to bowl to be able to return back in the playing XI for India in white-ball formats.

"In the top five, there's a lot of muscle there. If anyone's occupying the position Nos. 5, 6 onwards, he'll have to bring that extra department to the game. That is why from Hardik's point of view, from India's point of view, from the Gujarat team's point of view, it's extremely important that he strings those two or three overs together because if he does and bowls with even limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team," said Shastri to Espncricinfo.

"I think the all-rounder's position at No. 6 for sure. Ideally, someone in the top-five who can bowl two or three overs. That takes the pressure off the captain. It gives him then six and a half bowlers from whom he can choose. That will be one area I'll be looking at very closely. And of course the fast bowling and fielding. I'm not really worried about the batting. Batting is there," he added.

'He'll have to bring....': Shastri claims Hardik needs to bowl in IPL 2022 to make India comeback

Shane Warne passed away early this month, to leave a huge void in the cricketing fraternity. The former Aussie spin wizard died due to a suspected heart attack in Thailand and his passing away left many shellshocked. During his illustrious international career, Warne returned with 708 Test wickets and 293 ODI scalps.

Apart from this, Warne also left his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL), leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to the championship in the inaugural edition in 2008. Being a part of RR's victorious run, Shane Watson recalled his days under Warne's leadership and hailed him in Delhi Capitals' (DC) virtual press conference.

''The thing that stood out for me was that Rajasthan were written off because we didn't have big names as compared to the other teams. The advantage that Rajasthan had was the ability to pull the team together very quickly,'' DC's assistant coach Watson said.

He further opined, ''The incredible skill that Shane Warne had was seeing what people's roles were and then tapping into that role. For me, that was why he was an incredible leader, because he knew how to tap into a player's best version. He believed in the players, knew their skill set and where they fit in. For me, that's why Rajasthan did so well in the first season. He pulled all these from different cultures and different phases of their careers and led from the front."

On the other hand, Gujarat Titans' (GT) spin-bowling all-rounder Rashid Khan also shared his reaction to Warne's tragic and sudden demise. He said in a virtual presser, ''It was a huge shock. I had a great time with him. It was a huge honour for me that he called me to the MCG to have that 15-minute session with him during the lunch (break) of the Australia-New Zealand match. I was so lucky, I learned so much from him. We had a discussion on how I can be more effective in a long format. He happily shared his experience with me.

''He shared those key points, the mindset, the skill set.' Only thing he said is that 'you don't need to change your speed or action, that is something unique you have, you just need to be consistent, need to be more patient. Sometimes you won't get a wicket, but that is the time you will be tested mentally and also physically. You have to fit in for those big games. I was looking forward to having him as head coach and playing with him, spending more time with him. That was a dream. We discussed that. He said hopefully we will be in a Hundred ball competition in the UK,'' Rashid added.

Warne, at 52, has shattered many's hearts with his sudden demise. As a result, the whole of Victoria will get to pay its tributes to the spin wizard in Melbourne on March 30, 2022. It will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Brunton Avenue, Richmond.

The struggle is real for slots in the Indian senior men's cricket team. When India left for the United Kingdom, in early 2021, for the WTC final and the five-match Test series versus England, Shubman Gill was the first-choice opening partner of Rohit Sharma.

The duo managed to give decent starts to India in the WTC final before an injury ruled Gill out of action ahead of the five Tests versus Joe Root-led England. Thus, KL Rahul replaced him and made the most of the opportunities against the English side. While Gill returned back to competitive cricket with the second and final leg of IPL 2021 and also featured in the home Tests versus New Zealand, the 22-year-old had to once again miss out on appearing in the India-South Africa Tests, in the African nation, after the same injury reoccurred. In a freewheeling chat with Sports Tak, Gill opened up on the frustrating injury that has sidelined him in India's Test team.

"I have come out of it entirely now. It endured a stress fracture on my shin when we playing the World Test Championship final in England. About 2-3 days later, when the match ended, that night, I was in a lot of pain with my shin. I was in pain for almost 7-8 hours. I had no issues with my shin. I had never faced any problem with it whatsoever. It was quite shocking for me… to be in pain for 7-8 hours in the night. When I told the physio next day, they got an MRI done and that is where I found out that there’s a fracture in the shin," Gill told Sports Tak in an interview.

"After that we went for the IPL and there weren't too many fitness Tests so when we were playing Tests against New Zealand (in November-December last year), it reoccurred. In the first innings, there was quite a load while fielding because for a long time, there wasn't a Test match where we had to field for close to 130-140 overs, fielded almost for 2 days. Due to that, it began paining again. After that, the physios decided that until and unless it completely heals, I won’t try to make a comeback. Else it will keep happening. I spent 2 months at the NCA and I am now completely pain free," added Gill.

Having gone through some tough times in the recent past, Gill will now like to showcase his T20 credentials in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, where he will represent the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT). If he has a good season, the right-hander will become a contender in featuring back into the Indian team and can also make a case for selection for the T20 World Cup.

It was quite shocking for me: India's youngster recalls his frustrating injury before England Tests

The IPL 2022 edition is set to get underway on March 26, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This year's cash-rich league will be extremely crucial for Team India players as they will try to put their best foot forward to be added to the national side's T20 World Cup squad, with the showpiece event to be held later this year in Australia.

Among the bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah is sure to feature in the T20 WC squad (unless fitness concerns arise) but the same can't be said about Mohammed Shami. Shami has been a regular in Tests and also has good numbers in ODIs, but his T20I career isn't very impressive. For the unversed, the senior pacer has an economy rate of over 9 (9.54) in T20Is whereas he hasn't managed to contain the run-flow for various IPL franchises that he has represented over the years.

Thus, the forthcoming IPL season is very important for Shami. He is set to represent the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) after being bought by the debutant franchise for INR 62.5 million (INR 6.25 crore). As per a BCCI source, IPL will be a trial run for Shami to be in the scheme of things for India in the shortest format.

“It’s difficult to sustain all-format bowlers for all conditions. Jasprit Bumrah is the only one who has excelled in all formats. This team management believes in presenting a clear picture to all the players. Shami will surely be spoken to,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.

“His ODI career is much better placed. But this IPL will be a kind of trial for him to be considered for the T20 World Cup and he also understands it,” the source added.

Shami was part of India's disastrous run in the 2021 T20 World Cup. However, he has often been rested by the selectors for T20I assignments, in order to keep him fresh for big-ticket limited-overs events or Tests. However, with a T20 WC round the corner once again, his IPL season will determine if he remains in contention to appear in India's WC squad.

IPL 2022 to be a trial run for star Team India bowler for T20 World Cup consideration: Report

The stage is set for the commencement of the next edition of the IPL. The IPL 2022 edition will get underway on March 26 with the four-time winners and defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) up against last edition's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

This time around, the cash-rich league will see two more teams be a part of the tournament, such as the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Talking about the Gujarat franchise, they have a good mix of youth and experience and will be captained by Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Hardik, who soon became a regular in the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians' (MI) camp since his debut in IPL 2015, recently revealed his philosophy as captain ahead of the upcoming season.

"My philosophy for this season is that success is theirs and failure is mine," Hardik said during GT's jersey launch event recently. Here's the video of the same shared by the official Twitter handle of GT:

For the unversed, this will be the 28-year-old Hardik's first-ever season as an IPL captain. Hence, he will like to impress as a leader and also showcase his credentials once again as an all-round player. He has been out of action at the international level since the 2021 T20 World Cup, due to fitness concerns, and, thus, the forthcoming edition is really important for him to make a comeback into the Indian team at the earliest.

Success is theirs, failure is mine: Captain Hardik Pandya shares his philosophy ahead of IPL 2022

Injury-ravaged India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has got the all-clear to lead Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL after a general assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he bowled and also passed the 'Yo-Yo' Test comfortably.

The BCCI is checking on all its centrally contracted players -- injured or otherwise -- before the IPL and Pandya's performance, during his two days at the NCA, can also be seen as a good sign for Indian cricket.

"Let's make it clear. Fitness test clearance is only for those who are coming back from injury. In case of Hardik, it was about getting a general fitness assessment going into the gruelling IPL season," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"He is an asset and one needed to check his current fitness standards," he added.

In fact, in his fitness assessment module, the NCA team didn't even mandate him to bowl but the all-rounder apparently "insisted" on it to show that he is on track to make a comeback into the Indian team.

"He didn't need to bowl at NCA but he has bowled for considerable time and in the range of 135 kmph. On the second day, he crossed the Yo-Yo test with flying colours with a 17-plus score which is much above the cut-off level," the source said.

Prithvi Shaw fails 'Yo-Yo' test

However, as per information received one player, who would be slightly disappointed with his current fitness status is out-of-favour opener Prithvi Shaw.

The former U-19 World Cup winning captain, who is not a part of the central contract was also at the NCA to provide an update on his fitness status and the result wasn't exactly satisfactory.

The current Yo-Yo test qualification score is 16.5 for men and it has been learnt that the Mumbai opener has scored less than 15.

"These are just fitness updates. Obviously, it doesn't stop Prithvi from playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL. It's just a fitness parameter and not the be all and end all," the source said.

"Look, he has played three Ranji matches back-to-back. Once you play three first-class games on the bounce, the fatigue can also affect your Yo-Yo score," he added.

Shaw, of late, hasn't been among the fittest of Indian players and perhaps that is one of the reasons that of late, he has not been considered in any of the current senior teams across formats.

Even as a replacement, the team management, in the white-ball format, has preferred Mayank Agarwal as a reserve opener despite some underwhelming performances by the Karnataka man.

"If Prithvi is not being repeatedly considered, then perhaps his fitness standards aren't up to the mark, as in what is expected of a Team India player," the source said.

Gujarat Titans have signed Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Rahmanullah will be serving as a replacement for the England batter Jason Roy, who had earlier pulled out of the tournament.

"Whilst it is disappointing that Jason will not be a part of our campaign this year, we are mindful of the health and well-being of players in these times. We wish Jason well and look forward to his return to the field. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is one of the promising young batters to emerge from Afghanistan and we believe he is an ideal replacement for Jason," Vikram Solanki, Director of Cricket, Gujarat Titans said in a statement.

"Gurbaz is an attacking batter and fits into our plans for the Gujarat Titans. He has given a good account of his talent in international cricket and a few tournaments around the globe," he added.

From Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni to Hardik Pandya: Top 5 cricketing superstars with most Instagram followers

Hardik Pandya has been out of action since the 2021 T20 World Cup, held in the UAE. Since then, the 28-year-old all-rounder is out of contention and is striving hard to regain full fitness to reclaim the all-rounder's slot in Team India setup across formats.

Hardik will next be seen in action during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition, where he will represent the Gujarat Titans (GT). The swashbuckling all-rounder will represent his home franchise as the captain. Along with showcasing his skills as captain, Hardik will be eager to don the all-rounder's role and perform with aplomb for a comeback into the national side. For now, he was been replaced by Venkatesh Iyer in the white-ball formats. Iyer has also grown as a T20I player over the past month and is doing the right things so far to make it to the 2022 T20 WC squad.

Nonetheless, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Hardik still has the upper hand and will pip Venky Iyer for the fast-bowling all-rounder's slot, for the T20 WC, once he starts bowling and regains full fitness.

“It may look like Venkatesh Iyer is ahead in the race, but I won't be surprised if Hardik Pandya wins it. Ravindra Jadeja will be the spin all-rounder and Pandya will be the fast-bowling all-rounder,” Aakash said on his official YouTube channel.

“Iyer is present for now but the day Hardik starts bowling, he will pip Venkatesh Iyer for the role. It is also worth remembering that it is not a bilateral series where you can take 18-20 players at once according to your convenience. This is an ICC event where you can select only a 15-member squad," the ex-cricketer pointed out.

The former India batter further stated that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venky Iyer will only have an outside chance if Hardik doesn't regain full fitness.

England opener Jason Roy on Tuesday announced he will not be taking part in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Roy was roped in by Gujarat Titans at the IPL 2022 mega auction at his base price of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) and was expected to play a key role for the franchise next season.

However, the England batter said he had to pull out of the tournament due to bio-bubble fatigue. Roy and his wife Eli Moore became parents for the second time in January this year and the England batter said he would like to spend some time with his family as well as working on himself by missing IPL 2022.

Roy opened up on his decision to pull out of the tournament on social media and explained how playing in strict bio-bubbles over the last few years has taken a toll on him.

"Hi everyone, especially the Gujarat Titans fans and squad. It's with a heavy heart I have decided to pull out of this year's tournament. I want to thank the management and captain Hardik for putting your faith in me and picking me in the auction. However, with everything going on in the world over the last 3 years it's added up and taken its toll on me," Roy said.

"I feel it's only right I spend some quality time with my family. As well as spending time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading into a very busy year," he added.

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a much-awaited affair. The two-day event was held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. During the course of the auction, as many as 590 players went under the hammer. Many marquee players earned whopping deals whereas some uncapped and inexperienced cricketers also returned with big-fat cheques.

On the other hand, some iconic and popular T20 players went unsold. The auction saw bidding wars for many players as the ten IPL franchises fought hard as the eight existing teams had to revamp whereas the two new additions -- in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) -- build their sides from scratch.

Hardik Pandya has not been part of Team India's white-ball setup post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Pandya had already lost his Test spot after not being able to fulfill the all-rounder's duty and is out of the white-ball setup as well in order to regain full fitness.

Ahead of India's three-match T20I series versus West Indies, on Wednesday (February 16), Team India limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma opened up on Hardik's possible return and categorially denied having any word with the national selectors on the all-rounder's comeback into the national side. As of now, Hardik hasn't been considered for India's home season, also including Sri Lanka, as he is regaining full fitness to bat and ball in the IPL 2022 edition. Depending on his fitness and performance, he is likely to be considered for national recall post this year's IPL season.

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a star-studded two-day affair, which took place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. The ten IPL franchises took part in the auction proceedings with an aim to build their respective squads. The two new IPL teams -- Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) -- had a tougher task in developing a formidable unit from scratch.

Talking about the KL Rahul-led LSG franchise, they impressed one and all with their smart buying skills. Heading into the mega auction with INR 590 million -- after acquiring the services of Rahul, Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi -- the Sanjiv Goenka-owned team roped in some big names as well as plenty of youngsters in the mega auction.

Lucknow roped in the likes of Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder, Mark Wood, Evin Lewis, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Manish Pandey, etc. to form a strong line-up before the upcoming season, set to be held in March-May. Thus, the new franchise impressed many, including former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra.

Lucknow's shopping at the mega auction was rated highly by many, with some terming it better than veteran franchises Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), etc., as they were left with not a single penny in their purse. Thus, Chopra has lauded the new IPL team.

Chopra said on his Youtube channel, "I have given the Lucknow Super Giants the second-most numbers. I have given them 9/10. First, they spent all the money they had; even one rupee was not left. They are phenomenal; how can someone do it with so much precision. They bought 21 players, and there are some outstanding buys.

“They had Rahul, Stoinis and Bishnoi. If you have Stoinis, you think if you can get Jason Holder. Generally, teams think if they can get Stoinis or Mitchell Marsh or Jason Holder. You don't get all three together, they have got two already,” he explained further.

"In Quinton de Kock, you have got a player who is 29 years old, and plays just white-ball cricket. You got him for 6.75 crores; he will open and hit, and he is left-handed. Phenomenal buy. You see Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda, and then you think Rahul Tewatia, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi - they were all expensive; Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda seem to be a steal. After that, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya and Jason Holder. They also have Krishnappa Gowtham. No team has so many all-rounders. I mean go to this team if you want to make a list of multi-faceted cricketers," Chopra added.

Generally, teams think if they can get Stoinis or Mitchell Marsh or Jason Holder. You don't get all three together, they have got two already,” he explained further. First French-born cricketer to feature in India's cash-rich league "In Quinton de Kock, you have got a player who is 29 years old, and plays just white-ball cricket. Complete squad of Lucknow SG: KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock, Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Afghanistan's star spinner Rashid Khan, India's Mohammed Shami and New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson star the bowling department.

In the batting department, the team looks solid with the likes of Shubman Gill, Jason Roy, David Miller. The team also has all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Rahul Tewatia, Vijay Shankar.

However, the health of Pandya, who is a terrific bowler and a stunning batter, has been a matter of concern as due to a lower back injury, Pandya is yet to play any competitive match post the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE which got over in November 2021.

Pandya did not bowl much in IPL 2021 for Mumbai and he even did not bowl much for India in ICC T20 World Cup 2021 due to injury.

Giving an update, Gujarat Titans' spin bowling coach Aashish Kapoor said that Pandya has begun practice and even started to bowl in the nets.

While speaking to Indian news agency ANI, Kapoor said, "Nehra has been in constant touch with him from the time we have retained him and Nehra has been talking to him. He has also spoken about how to arrange and where to arrange practice sessions for him and get those things done," he added.

"Asking him to play a few Ranji Trophy games before he turns up for a camp which may be in March with some point in March may be in Mid-March. So, he has been also starting to bowl that's what he has told Nehra," he said.

"He has started to bowl, he is bowling well and batting he has no problems in any case because mainly we want to know whether he can bowl for us like how in the Indian team," the coach added.

"So, if he can bowl and bat both it is an added advantage because there are not too many all-rounders in India (medium pace all-rounders). He is the only one that you can think of at the moment so if you have that all-rounder with you then I think you are on the plus side," Kapoor said.

'Resumed practice, bowling well': Gujarat Titans give update on Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a star-studded event, which took place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The ten franchises went on a buying spree and added quite a few big names to strengthen their respective squads for the upcoming IPL 15 edition, set to be held in India in March-May.

Talking about the Gujarat Titans (GT), the newly-formed IPL franchise along with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), they also added some big names in their roster ahead of the 15th edition of the cash-rich league. After adding the likes of all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan along with opener Shubman Gill, as their three initial picks, the GT franchise did a good job in their maiden IPL auction.

The Gujarat franchise have roped in the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Jason Roy, David Miller Mohammed Shami, Rahul Tewatia, Alzarri Joseph, etc., along with investing in a host of inexperienced as well as some uncapped players -- Gurkeerat Singh, Yash Dayal, Darshan Nalkande.

Among the whole squad, Hardik, Rashid, Jason Roy, Md Shami, Gill remain one of their biggest stars and signings. Towards the fag end of the mega auction, the think-tank also added two good wicketkeeper-batters in Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade.

It is safe to say that Gujarat didn't spend a lot on various players, and bought them for a cheaper price, they would be satisfied with their first outing at the auction as they now have a host of all-rounders (Vijay Shankar, Dominic Drakes and Jayant Yadav) and good international pacers in their mix.

At the mega auction, their biggest signings were NZ pacer Ferguson (INR 100 million) and ex-Rajasthan Royals' (RR) all-rounder Rahul Tewatia (INR 90 million). Overall, Hardik and Rashid remain the most expensive players for the Gujarat franchise (both coming in at INR 150 million).
