On Wednesday evening (June 15), the BCCI selection committee announced a 17-member Team India squad for the forthcoming two-match T20I series versus hosts Ireland. Ahead of India's rescheduled fifth and final Test versus Ben Stokes-led England, in early July at Edgbaston, the Men in Blue are also scheduled to play Ireland for two T20Is.

Thus, for the short series, BCCI appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain with Bhuvneshwar Kumar serving as his deputy. The likes of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, vice-captain KL Rahul (if fit), Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, etc. will be preparing for the one-off red-ball match versus hosts England when Hardik & Co. will play the Irish side in their own backyard, on June 26 and 28.

While the T20I squad comprises some experienced campaigners and has a host of young stars from the IPL, Gujarat Titans' (GT) all-rounder Rahul Tewatia was overlooked. Hence, the swashbuckling left-hander reacted to the Team India snub via a tweet from his official account:

Gujarat Titans' finisher Rahul Tewatia responds to Team India snub for Ireland T20Is

Hardik Pandya's captaincy stocks have risen ever since he impressed one and all with his leadership qualities in the IPL 2022 edition. In what was the star all-rounder's first-ever season as captain, the 28-year-old made a huge mark by leading the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title, beating Rajasthan Royasl (RR) with ease in the final.

Hardik's calm and composed nature on the field, leading the charge in all departments despite additional responsibility and some tactical decisions stood out as many former cricketers and experts of the game are impressed with his game-reading abilities as captain. Ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, where Hardik has been promoted as the vice-captain after Rishabh Pant replaced an injured KL Rahul to become the new stand-in skipper, former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a huge claim on Hardik.

"One of the biggest revelations in this year's IPL was the advent of Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Gujarat Titans and the way he led the team from the front to win the coveted title is definitely praiseworthy. His intent and positive captaincy are signs that he can lead Team India in the future," Harbhajan told PTI in an interview.

Before the SA series opener, head coach Rahul Dravid had also lauded Hardik's captaincy in IPL 15. He told the reporters, "I just met Hardik a couple of hours ago. 'His leadership was impressive in IPL 2022' - Rahul Dravid all praise for Hardik Pandya ahead of SA T20Is

Hardik Pandya made heads turn in IPL 2022, where he led the Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title in their first-ever edition. Ahead of the season, all eyes were on the star Indian all-rounder as he was set to mark his return to competitive cricket after a long time and his fitness levels were set to be examined by many.

However, Hardik rose to the occasion and fulfilled the role of a batter, bowler, whereas he did exceedingly well as a first-time captain in IPL. With the bat, Hardik amassed 487 runs -- his best tally in a season -- and claimed eight wickets, with three of them coming in the final, before leading GT to their maiden title. Thus, former Indian stumper Kiron More heaped praise on him and called him a four-dimensional player.

"The best moment for me in IPL 15 was the way Gujarat Titans played cricket. It was outstanding. And especially with Hardik becoming a captain and lifting the trophy, his personal performance was equally brilliant. Going from Mumbai Indians to Gujarat Titans, it’s not that easy to go and lead the new team and straightaway win the championship," More told SG podcast.

Recalling Hardik’s early days as a cricketer, More, who represented India in 49 Tests and 94 ODIs, claimed, "He wanted to play the sport. Krunal Pandya (his elder brother) had joined my academy, and Hardik used to hang around. He used to keep running behind the nets and catching the ball. That is when I told Krunal to bring him to nets as well, and that’s when I saw hunger in his eyes."

"For me, Hardik was a young kid who wanted to perform all the time. I now believe he is a four-dimensional player now. Earlier, he was a three-dimensional player because he was a bowler, batter, and fielder, but now he is captain as well. So, you feel proud that you have such a talented cricketer on the national side," More added.

Hardik will now shift his focus to the forthcoming India-South Africa T20I series at home. It will also mark his return to the Team India set up after the 2021 T20 World Cup. In Rohit Sharma's absence, KL Rahul will lead the 18-member squad.

Hardik Pandya made heads turn in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 edition. He was making a comeback at the competitive level during IPL 2022, after being out of action since the 2021 T20 World Cup, and, hence, all eyes were on him. His fitness has been a major concern, thus, many had their eyes on him and whether he would bowl as well.

Hardik ended IPL 2022 with 487 runs -- his best tally in a season -- eight wickets and also inspired the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their first-ever IPL title. His leadership was exemplary as Hardik was calm and composed for most parts of the field, motivated his troops, made some good bowling changes and didn't get bogged down by additional responsibility. Hence, Hardik's elder brother Krunal Pandya -- who was part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who lost the Eliminator -- lauded his sibling and penned a heartfelt note on Twitter.

“My bro. Only you know the amount of hard work that’s gone behind this success of yours - early mornings, countless hours of training, discipline and mental strength. And to see you lift the trophy is the fruit of your hard work. You deserve it all and so much more. People had written you off but you keep writing history. Wish I was there when more than a lakh people were cheering your name,” said Krunal in a couple of tweets.

'People had written you off but....': Krunal pens heartfelt note for brother Hardik after Gujarat win IPL 2022

Gujarat Titans (GT) proved their doubters wrong with a season to remember as they went on to lift their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their debut campaign. The Hardik Pandya-led side was a force to reckon with throughout the tournament and notched up wins consistently to lift the elusive trophy after beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the final on Sunday (May 29). The Titans have garnered praise from many for their stunning season which saw a number of individuals stand up and deliver when required.

They were not one of the favourites at the start of the tournament but Gujarat Titans defied the odds and won some matches from improbable situations after impeccable contributions from their batters and bowlers. They were the first team to qualify for the playoffs and the first to reach the final after beating RR in the 1st Qualifier.

While the likes of captain Hardik Pandya, David Miller and Shubman Gill starred with the bat during the season, Rahul Tewatia played some sensational cameos down the order and won a few important matches as a finisher for his team. In the bowling department, Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan were consistent throughout while the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Yash Dayal, R Sai Kishore and Alzarri Joseph played their part.

Gujarat Titans were not among the favourites even for a spot in the playoffs after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year. But their effort as a team was enough to outclass the favourites and emerge on top to clinch the prestigious trophy.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Hardik Pandya & Co. and said they proved the trophy can't be won at the auction table. Manjrekar pointed out how GT had taken a gamble with players like Miller and Pandya himself but it all paid off for them.

"Not many people thought they've done well with the selection of players. The player, the captain and they got their formula right and they go to win it," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

"I think the lesson from this IPL is that you don't win an IPL title at the auction. Mumbai Indians for a while proved that to be the right way to go, but Gujarat Titans, just the players they gambled on and how big they have paid back with the gamble, that's been the story of Gujarat Titans.

“Hardik Pandya big gamble, David Miller massive gamble and what return from these guys,” he added.

Pandya, who was released by Mumbai Indians ahead of the mega auction, was roped in as captain by the Titans and went on to lead the side tremendously well. Hardik showcased exemplary leadership qualities as he inspired the Titans to their first title in their very first season. He also saved his best for the last and came up with a Man of the Match performance in the final.

Hardik scored 34 runs and picked up three wickets with the ball to help his team beat RR by 7 wickets in the summit clash. The GT skipper became only the third captain to win a Man of the Match award in the final and mainatined his perfect unbeaten record in IPL finals. He has won all five IPL finals that he has been part of so far in his career.

Hardik Pandya has been the talk of the town ever since he led the Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title in the IPL 2022 final. Now, Hardik is set for a return in Team India jersey as the white-ball side is set to host Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in a five-match T20I series, starting on June 09 in New Delhi. For the unversed, the series will mark the 28-year-old Hardik's return as he last played for the national side during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Ahead of his return, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Hardik, post IPL 2022 final, and suggested his batting slot for Team India for the SA T20Is.

Speaking to Star Sports, batting legend said, "I think he'll probably be slotted at five or six. Just imagine, if India has a Hardik Pandya and a Rishabh Pant at five or six. They can probably swap around a little bit -- that is going to be some explosive combination from the 14th to the 20th over. In six overs, you can probably expect even maybe 100-120 runs. They are capable of doing that. So, that's going to be an exciting aspect. That's something I'm really looking forward to -- Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya batting at five or six."

Hardik Pandya led Gujarat Titans (GT) to a memorable triumph in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. After dominating the proceedings in the league stage of the tournament, GT defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) twice in the first Qualifier and the final to cap off a memorable season with the elusive trophy. Gujarat Titans became only the second team after RR to win the IPL in their debut season.

With ten teams entering the competition this year, Hardik was among the new captains to watch out for in the tournament. He was roped in by Gujarat Titans in the players' draft after being released by his former side Mumbai Indians (MI). The star all-rounder was also named captain of the team and led the side exceptionally well throughout the tournament.

Hardik was brilliant as a leader and also led from the front with the bat as he finished as the highest run-getter for his side with 487 runs from 15 matches at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of over 131. He also picked up 8 wickets with the ball and delivered a match-winning all-round performance in the final against the Royals.

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja said Mumbai Indians fans would be feeling the pain after witnessing Hardik lift the IPL 2022 trophy following his exit from MI. Hardik had joined MI in 2015 and played only for the five-time champions before being released earlier this year. MI played a key role in Hardik's development as he also went on to become a regular for India across formats.

“He is one of those who gets inspired by the crowd. He likes the crowd, likes the people. If there is any dard (pain) it will be felt by the Mumbai fans. They will probably feeling that pain today, not the Gujarat fans,” Jadeja said on Cricbuzz talking about Hardik's incredible feat with the Titans.

Jadeja credited Mumbai Indians for their role in Hardik's growth and said the franchise made the star all-rounder what he is today. Not just Hardik, but Mumbai Indians have also unearthed the likes of Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, who became strong pillars of the franchise ever since.

"He has picked the best from each one of them. You have got to keep learning, it is a process in life. Experience will always make you better. He has had a great run here but he is definitely going to learn as he grows. He has probably grasped most from (MI)," said Jadeja about Hardik's growth at MI.

He has come from Baroda, played local cricket there but Mumbai Indians made Hardik Pandya. The Pandya we see today is thanks to Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma the captain and everyone else over there. I think MI has a better setup to educate you," he added.

The Titans were the most consistent team in the league stage and were the first to qualify for the playoffs before beating Rajasthan Royals twice in the knockout stage to win the elusive trophy for the first time.

Gujarat Titans script fairytale run to win maiden IPL title in debut season

Hardik Pandya has been garnering praise from all corners for his excellent captaincy in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after leading Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title triumph in their debut campaign. Hardik was roped in by GT ahead of the start of IPL 2022 after being released by his former side Mumbai Indians. The star all-rounder was also appointed as the captain of his side and the moves turned out to be a masterstroke as Hardik inspired his team to their first title in his first season as captain.

Gujarat Titans were one of the most consistent teams throughout the league stage and were the first to reach the playoffs. They came up against Rajasthan Royals twice in the knockout stage and defeated them on both occasions to be crowned champions.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Hardik's captaincy as he spoke about his rise as captain in IPL 2022. Not many had expected the all-rounder to lead his team to their maiden title in their very first season, however, GT managed to pull off some miraculous wins under Hardik to go all the way in the tournament.

“Yes definitely. Not just my estimation, but everybody’s estimation (Hardik’s reputation as a leader has gone up). This was an aspect of his game which nobody had too much information about," Gavaskar said on Star Sports following GT's win over RR in the IPL 2022 final.

“We all knew what he could do with the bat, what he could do with the ball, but there was just a little bit of a concern before the start of the season about whether he would be able to bowl his full quota of 4 overs. He has done that, he has shown that. That all-rounder aspect is done, and everybody is happy. But this now, the way he has led the team, the way he has got them together, the way he has got them to gel together means he has got leadership qualities," he added.

Gavaskar also threw his weight behind Hardik as a potential contender to become India's next captain in the future. Currently, Rohit Sharma is in charge of the Indian team across formats and several players are being groomed to take up the role in the future. Gavaskar believes the leadership qualities shown by Hardik in IPL 2022 have opened the doors for him to be able to captain the Indian team one day.

“When you have leadership qualities, it automatically opens the door for honours at the national level to be able to captain the Indian national team in the near future. So that’s exciting, there are 3-4 other names in the ring. I am not saying he is the next in line. But for the selection committee to have that option is fantastic,” Gavaskar explained.

There were concerns over Hardik's bowling ahead of the start of the season as the all-rounder was making a comeback after a long break and had not bowled too much in the IPL or international cricket over the last couple of years. While he didn't bowl regularly, the GT skipper stepped up with the ball when his team needed him.

In the final against RR, he was the pick of the bowlers for GT with a three-wicket haul while conceding only 17 runs off his four overs. Hardik finished the season with 487 runs and 8 wickets in 15 matches for the Titans to help them win their maiden title in debut season.

Hardik Pandya for India captaincy? Sunil Gavaskar throws weight behind GT skipper after IPL 2022 triumph

Gujarat Titans (GT) created history on Sunday (May 29) as they defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 7 wickets in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Sunday (May 29) to win their maiden title in their debut season. Gujarat Titans chased down the target of 131 runs comfortably with 11 balls to spare to become only the second team after RR to win the elusive trophy in their debut season. RR had won their first IPL title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008.

It was a lop-sided final with Gujarat Titans dominating the proceedings right from the start of the game. Skipper Hardik Pandya delivered a brilliant performance with the ball as he bagged a three-wicket haul to help GT restrict RR to a low-key total of 130/9 in 20 overs.

Opener Shubman Gill then slammed an unbeaten 45 while Pandya and David Miller played crucial knocks of 34 and 32 runs respectively to take GT over the line comfortably in the run chase. It was a comprehensive win from the Titans, who were also the most consistent teams throughout the league stage of the tournament.

Gill, who won his maiden IPL title with the Titans, was elated after the memorable triumph and compared it to a World Cup win. The former India U-19 star, who was part of the Prithvi Shaw-led India U-19 team which won the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2018, said winning an IPL trophy was equivalent to winning a World Cup.

"Obviously, it (title win) means a lot. After winning the U-19 World Cup, I think winning an IPL is as big as winning a World Cup," Gill said speaking to Harsha Bhogle after the final.

"This is my fifth year and I am fortunate enough to win the IPL this time. I wanted to be there till the end, and that’s what the talk was about with the coaches, and I am glad that we came over the line. Our bowlers bowled really well to restrict them to 130. We initially thought that if we could get them under 150, it would be a good target for us to chase down, but fortunately it was even less than 150 and we did the job for the team," he added.

'As big as winning a World Cup': Shubman Gill reacts after Gujarat Titans lift IPL 2022 trophy - WATCH

Gujarat Titans (GT) capped off a fabulous season by winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 title after defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the final of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 29). It was yet another clinical all-round performance from the Titans, who played some phenomenal cricket throughout the tournament. GT skipper Hardik Pandya has now won all five IPL finals that he has been part of in his career so far.

While it was an excellent team effort from the Titans, Pandya led from the front with both the bat and the ball. He bowled an exceptional spell during Rajasthan Royals' innings to restrict Sanju Samson & Co. to just 130 runs finishing with figures of 3/17 in his four overs before playing a crucial knock of 34 runs during his side's run chase.

Pandya hailed his teammates after the victory and said the Titans have set the right example for the others to follow by showcasing that playing as a team will always help you in winning tournaments. He also said he has been lucky to have managed to win five IPL finals so far in his career.

"This is the right example for any team in the world. If you can play as a team and build a good unit with genuine people around, wonders can happen. I and Ashu pa, we like to play proper bowlers. Batters can obviously chip in, but most of the time I have seen in T20 cricket - it's a batter's game but bowlers win you games. A lot of times we won the games as well, but we always spoke about what are the things we missed out and how we can get better from here. Everyone chipped in. Count myself lucky winning 5 finals, it's been exciting," Pandya said after leading his side to their maiden IPL triumph.

"This is going to be a special one. We spoke about creating a legacy. Generation to come, everyone will remember this was the team who started this journey and to win the championship first year is very special," he added

He ended up on the winning side in all four of the summit clashes. He is now a part of an elite list of players in the IPL who have won the trophy as many as five times.

Gujarat Titans were far from favourites at the start of the season and not many had given them a chance to script a fairytale run in their debut season after what transpired for them at the mega auction. However, the likes of David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan and Hardik himself kept stepping up on different occasions to help the team win some games from difficult situations and create history.

'Count myself lucky winning 5 finals': Hardik Pandya after inspiring Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2022 final, by seven wickets, to end their maiden season with their first-ever title. Hardik led from the front as he contributed with a match-winning spell, 4-0-17-3, whereas he also played a crucial hand with the bat (scoring a 30-ball 34) in a low-scoring match dominated by GT.

Opting to bat first, at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, Sanju Samson-led RR posted only a moderate 130-9. In reply, Shubman Gill's 45 not out, David Miller's 19-ball 32 and Hardik's contributions closed the run-chase with seven wickets and 11 balls to spare.

After the match, Hardik pulled off an MS Dhoni during the end of the presentation ceremony. After receiving the IPL 2022 trophy, by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, he quickly gave it to the Gujarat youngsters and stood at a corner (a trend started by Dhoni during his early days as India captain). Ashish Nehra becomes 1st Indian to achieve huge feat after Gujarat Titans win IPL 2022

Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2022 final on Sunday evening (May 29), at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. In their maiden season, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat ended on a high note by winning the elusive title and joining some big teams in the overall winners' list.

Opting to bat first, Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan came out with positive intent as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal took on the GT bowlers and utilised the powerplay overs. Nonetheless, he was dismissed by Yash Dayal against the run of play for a good-looking 22. Jos Buttler (who ended with the Orange Cap with 863 runs) was at his cautious best and stitched a partnership with Sanju Samson before the skipper fell off his counterpart, trying to accelerate after some tidy overs. From thereon, Rajasthan never got going as Hardik-Rashid Khan applied the brakes with their clever bowling and change of pace to leave RR tottering at 98 for 6. Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag and R Ashwin couldn't do much as the 2008 winners somehow managed to reach 130 for 9 in 20 overs. Hardik returned with 3 for 17 whereas Sai Kishore also chipped in with two wickets.

In reply, Gujarat lost in-form opener, Wriddhiman Saha, early. The right-hander fell to a peach off a delivery off Prasidh Krishna as RR started with a bang. While No. 3 batter Matthew Wade started with a six, he fell to Trent Boult as GT were soon reduced to 23-2 within six overs in a moderate run-chase. From thereon, skipper Hardik and opener Shubman Gill did a good job to steady the ship, by buying some time in the middle and keeping the scoreboard ticking with some odd boundaries at regular intervals.

However, RR kept on fighting and Yuzvendra Chahal removed Hardik by getting a big edge off his blade in the 14th over. With this, Yuzi Chahal won the Purple Cap -- ending with 27 wickets (most by any spinner in a single edition) -- but couldn't prevent the inevitable for his franchise. Gill was joined by David Miller as the duo ended the run-chase with ease, in front of a packed stadium -- in excess of 1,00,000 people. Gill, unbeaten on 45, and Miller's 19-ball 32 propelled GT to their maiden title by 7 wickets and 11 balls to spare.

IPL 2022 final: BCCI claims huge world record ahead of GT vs RR clash - WATCH

Sanju Samson and Hardik Pandya have both lead their respective sides extremely well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and both of them will be looking to claim their first time as a captain as Rajasthan Royals take over Gujarat Titans in the final on Sunday. While a lot is at stake in the summit clash, it will also be a unique feat for both skippers as this will be the first time that both the sides will be led by cricketers with no experience of captaining in international cricket. Only three other non-international skippers have led a side in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The final will also feature the youngest average age when it comes to the two skippers in IPL history. The average age of Hardik and Samson is 28.09 and that took away the record from the IPL 2016 final where the average of David Warner and Virat Kohli was 28.57. Apart for these two occasions, the average age of the two captains in an IPL final has always exceeded 30 years.

Gujarat Titans qualified for the playoffs at the top of the points table with 18 points while Rajasthan Royals were second with 16 points. The two sides have faced each other twice this season with Gujarat Titans emerging victorious on both occasions including a close clash in Qualifier 1.

First time in 15 years! Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson to achieve unique feat in IPL 2022 final

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has lauded Hardik Pandya for his terrific leadership in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Hardik has led his team Gujarat Titans (GT) into the final of the tournament in their debut campaign this season. The Titans made it to the summit clash after playing some brilliant cricket in the group stage and the playoffs and will be hoping to cap off a fairytale run with their maiden IPL trophy.

Hardik has been instrumental both as a leader and as an all-rounder in his franchise's dream run in IPL 2022. The star all-rounder was roped in by Gujarat Titans ahead of the ongoing season after being released by Mumbai Indians (MI). He was also appointed as the captain of the side and has been one of the stand-out leaders in this edition.

Gujarat Titans were the first team to qualify for the playoffs after reaching 18 points this season and the debutants also finished as the table toppers with a total of 20 points from the league stage. They went on to beat Rajasthan Royals in the 1st Qualifier to secure a spot in the final and will now be gunning for the trophy in the final.

Ahead of the final, Akhtar lauded Hardik and made a bold statement claiming that the star all-rounder can be an ideal replacement for Rohit Sharma as India's next captain in the future. Rohit recently took over from Virat Kohli as India's captain across all three formats.

However, the Hitman is 35 at present and his workload needs to be managed better in order to ensure he can continue playing at the highest level for longer. India will also look to groom new leaders under Rohit with the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah among great contenders to be the team's captain going forward.

However, Akhtar has backed Hardik to take over as India's captain and said the GT skipper is already knocking at the door for India captaincy with his rise as a leader in IPL 2022. “It is the fact that Hardik Pandya is leaving a mark. He is knocking on the door of Indian captaincy. One is not sure how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain,” Akhtar said on Sportskeeda.

However, Akhtar also insisted that Hardik should focus on his fitness and ensure he can contribute both with the bat and the ball for the Indian team going forward. Hardik will make his comeback for the Men in Blue in the home T20I series against South Africa next month.

“It’s never easy to captain the Indian cricket team. Hardik has proved his point (as a leader) but he still needs to focus on his fitness and bowling. When he was fit as an all-rounder, he was an automatic choice in the Indian team. As a pure batter, though, there is no vacancy in the Indian team,” Akhtar added.

GT topped the table at the end of the group stage while RR were second with two points less than their opponents. But Pandya has led him to victory on both the occasions when they have faced RR including in the Qualifier 1. In a conversation with Sportskeeda, Akhtar said that he wants the debutants to clinch the IPL title.

“One team (Rajasthan) has made the final after 14 years. In memory of Shane Warne, I hope Rajasthan go out there and smash Gujarat. Heart says, ‘RR win it for Shane Warne’. They have faced a lot of difficulties to reach the final after 14 years. But, as I had said earlier, I also always wanted one of the new teams to win because they have played so well. I will go with Gujarat,” said Shoaib.

“Both Rajasthan and Gujarat will be nervous. RR will have a point to prove as they have made the final for the first time since 2008. They will be excited, and their aggression will be over the moon. On the other hand, Gujarat will also want to leave their mark in their first season” he added.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden praised Gujarat Titans but also pointed out an ominous sign for them during a show on Star Sports. “Their 4,5,6 have just been out of this world. But with this bouncy wicket which is very similar to Australian wicket so that could be really ominous sign for Gujarat Titans," the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener explained.

Gujarat Titans vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2022 final: Shoaib Akhtar, Matthew Hayden pick their potential winners

Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will battle it out for the one final time for the elusive IPL trophy when they lock horns with each other in the final of IPL 2022 on Sunday (May 29). The two teams have been the most consistent side so far in the tournament and have deservingly made it to the summit clash which will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 29). While Gujarat Titans have enjoyed a fairytale run reaching the final in their debut season, Rajasthan Royals will be playing their first final since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008.

Gujarat Titans were the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season after reaching 18 points. The Hardik Pandya-led side was far from favourites following the conclusion of the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year. However, they defied the odds and saw the likes of David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Rahid Khan also with skipper Hardik make impactful contributions to help them pull off some thrilling victories.

While Hardik has led from the front with the bat and also contributed with the ball when required, Miller, Tewatia and Rashid have been phenomenal down the order as finishers. GT's bowling attack has also been exceptional so far this season with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Alzarri Joseph, Rashid and Yash Dayal all among the wickets.

Rajasthan Royals have arguably been the second-best team after the Gujarat Titans so far this season. Sanju Samson & Co. have also relied heavily on their bowling attack consisting of the leading wicket-taker of the tournament - Yuzvendra Chahal, the dangerous Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna and R Ashwin among others.

Jos Buttler has been their top performer with the bat and has had a season to remember with a staggering 824 runs in just 16 matches so far. While Buttler has done the majority of the scoring at the top, skipper Samson, Devdutt Padikkal and Shimron Hetmyer have also contributed with the bat.

While both teams have played some brilliant cricket so far this season, there is an interesting pattern which suggests Gujarat Titans might be favourites to win the IPL 2022 title. Since 2018, the winning team in an IPL final has remained unbeaten against their opponent throughout the season.

Can Rajasthan Royals break the jinx?

In 2018, Chennai Super Kings had defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final to lift their 3rd trophy. CSK had earlier defeated SRH thrice in the league stage and the playoffs before beating them in the final to remain unbeaten against SRH throughout IPL 2018.

In 2019, Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in their first three meetings before defeating them in the final to clinch the trophy. In IPL 2020, it was Delhi Capitals, who lost thrice against Mumbai Indians before losing the final too against the Rohit Sharma-led side.

IPL 2021 saw a similar pattern as Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders reached the final. CSK had won both their meetings against KKR in the league stage and maintained a 3-0 perfect record after beating them in the final as well.

This year, Gujarat Titans have a 3-0 record against Rajasthan Royals having won all three encounters against the Samson-led side so far in the tournament. Going by the pattern from the last four seasons, Gujarat Titans appear favourites to win the trophy this year but can Rajasthan Royals break the jinx and emerge triumphant?

Stats

Jos Buttler has been the best batsman in IPL 2022 by quite some distance but the England international has not looked comfortable against Rashid Khan. Rashid has dismissed him four times in 41 balls while conceding just 25 runs. The spinner from Afghanistan has also been quite economical against RR skipper Sanju Samson but he has dismissed the right-hander just once.

However, RR can bank on West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer to nullify the threat of Rashid as he has scored at the strike rate of 140 against the leg-spinner in the 45 balls he has faced.

Trivia

Gujarat Titans have been quite impressive in their debut season, and they have won seven encounters in the final over – the previous record being five for any IPL side. They have also slammed the highest number of fours in the tournament but when it comes to sixes, they are at the bottom of the list with RR dominating the show. Pandya & Co also have the chance to become only the second team after Mumbai Indians to win the IPL title after topping the group stages.
