Rajasthan Royals cut a sorry figure in their latest home game against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023. Batting first after winning the toss, the hosts were looking good at 50 for two after the end of the Powerplay, but wickets fell like a pack of cards after that as they got all out on 118. For Gujarat, the top three shined as they chased down the target with nine wickets, further strengthening their position on the points table. RR’s director of cricket and head coach, Kumar Sangakkara, labelled this performance as 'embarrassing' and urged the players to pull up the socks as playoff approaches.

Speaking to the media after the loss, Sangakkara said a performance like this is embarrassing for everyone in the camp. He added other than being poor across all sectors, RR batters didn’t show any intent against the Afghanistan pair of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, who picked five wickets between them.

"We were very, very poor in terms of capitalising on the starts we got. We were showing intent for a while, but we were a little bit reckless, and then we had very, very little intent against the two spinners. Rashid bowled brilliantly, I thought Noor bowled really well as well, but that's the time the batters need to step up and show more and more intent,” Sangakkara expressed disappointment after RR’s nine-wicket loss against GT.

Shedding some light on the side's inability to cash in on the little chances against GT, Sangakkara said that led to the downfall as the group needs to sit together and work on before their next league clash against SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

"Even a defence in T20 cricket has to have the intent of wanting to score. You work down the sequence of 6, 4, 3, 2, 1; or, if you're under pressure, you go 4, 3, 2, 1. But you are always looking for opportunities to score, and at the minimum, getting off strike.

"And once that intent is shown, it doesn't matter how good a bowler you are, you are always thinking that you can't give the batter anything loose because you're going to get put away. So that's one area that we've got to really look at," he added.

Further emphasising how important it is for RR to win their remaining games or at least most of them to stay alive in the playoff race, Sangakkara said this harsh loss came late, and at the wrong time for them, but he still believes Rajasthan have a potent unit to turnaround the results.

"Games like this, most sides have pretty bad games," Sangakkara said. "Unfortunately, we've had one now, pretty late in the tournament. We're still a very high-quality side, playing some very good cricket if you take this one out of the equation.

"But we've got to accept the fact that we were extremely poor today. And that's the first step. You realise it, accept it, and then try to come up with the solutions to what the problems are," he added.

Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) are at the top spot -- with 12 points from nine games -- whereas the second-ranked Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and third-positioned Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have 11 points each.

On the other hand, fours teams such as Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are tied at ten points each. The likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) occupy the last three spots, respectively, and none of them are eliminated as of now.

Recently, Ravi Shastri -- India's former head coach -- picked his winner of IPL 2023. He feels Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat will be able to defend their title.

"Looking at the current form and team standings, I believe that Gujarat will win the trophy. There is consistency and flexibility in this team and there are seven-eight players who are performing consistently. The players in this Gujarat side complement each other," Ravi Shastri said while speaking on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

Not CSK, RCB or MI! Former India coach Ravi Shastri backs THIS team to lift IPL 2023 trophy

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) occupy the top spot in the IPL 2023 points table at present. The defending champions lost their previous match, to bottom-ranked Delhi Capitals (DC), but remain in a comfortable position with six wins from nine games (12 points). Ahead of their marquee clash with Rajasthan Royals (RR), on Friday evening (May 05), former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock shared some words of advice for Hardik.

Hardik has not had a great run with the bat this season. He has scored 213 runs at a strike rate of 117.03 with two fifties. Even in GT's five-run loss to DC, Hardik scored a 53-ball 59 but failed to accelerate when needed during the 131-run chase. Pollock backed Hardik to bat at No. 3, something which he is doing for the past few games, but feels he needs to change gears when needed and run hard between wickets.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, the former pacer said, "I don't think in his [Hardik Pandya's] role of the Gujarat Titans he needs to go down. If he was at Mumbai, he would probably still do it because of the firepower they have. I saw some good performances from him last year."

Pollock further asserted, "I think he maybe just needs to change gears at different times. I don't have an issue with him coming up higher. He is a class player and has got the ability to strike it really well."

"I know it is with his injuries that he has had. But if you have look back at the innings he played the other night, there's a lot to be said for people who charge between the wickets and put fielders under pressure. There were a lot of times when he would just hit the sweeper and just jog through," he added.

Hardik-led GT face Sanju Samson's RR, in Jaipur, in match 48 of the ongoing IPL season. One more win will bring them closer to attaining a spot in the playoffs.

IPL 2023: 'Hardik Pandya is a class player but...' - Former SA captain suggests GT skipper ahead of RR tie

Not many would have given bottom-ranked David Warner-led Delhi Capitals (DC) any chance of beating table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) when both sides met in Ahmedabad in match 44 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 02). Opting to bat first, DC were rattled by Mohammed Shami's spell, 4-0-11-4, as they were reduced to 23 for 5 but Aman Hakim Khan's 51 and contributions from Axar Patel and Ripal Patel took DC to 130 for 8 on a challenging surface. In reply, Ishant Sharma 2 for 23 and a brilliant final over took Delhi to an unlikely win over Gujarat, by five runs.

GT was tottering at 32 for 4 and despite a 62-run stand between captain Hardik Pandya (53-ball 59) and Abhinav Manohar (33-ball 26), for the fifth wicket, Gujarat never found any rhythm. The defending champions' run-chase got a much-needed push with Rahul Tewatia slamming three back-to-back sixes off Anrich Nortje in the penultimate over. From 33 off 12, GT were alive in the chase with only 12 needed off the last six before Ishant used all his experience to dismiss Tewatia and ended by only conceding six runs.

After the match, Ishant revealed how he got the better of Tewatia (resorting to his change-ups). "I played enough cricket with Tewatia, so was just having fun with him. I knew I had to double bluff him otherwise we know what he can do with the bat," he stated.

At the post-match presentation, Warner said, "Our bowlers were amazing. I was nervous when Tewatia was going off, he has a reputation for that kind of stuff. WATCH: Rahul Tewatia sets the stage on fire with a hat-trick of sixes off Anrich Nortje in GT-DC IPL 2023 tie

Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya blamed himself after a shocker of a loss against Delhi Capitals. Notably, Delhi defended a paltry score of 130 and won by five runs at GT's home ground in Ahmedabad.

"I tried my best but could not capitalise. It boils down to me. Obviously, we would have taken 129 on any given day. (We) just lost a couple of wickets and at the end, Rahul (Tewatia) got us back in the game," he said at the post-match presentation.

"I don't think the [track] played much role. It was a tad slower than what we are used to here. But they bowled really well. We lost a couple of early wickets and then we had to take some time. We could not get the rhythm in the middle. Rahul brought us back into the game. Otherwise, they were quite ahead," added Hardik.

The skipper felt sorry, especially for fast bowler Mohammed Shami who tore apart Delhi's batting line-up to leave them reeling five down for 23 in five overs. Shami finished with stats of 4/11 in his four overs to help GT restrict DC to 130/8 in 20 overs.

"I feel sorry for (Shami)," Pandya sighed. “If you bowl like that, then you restrict the team to 129 (130), I think (our) batters are disappointed. I don't think the ball did a lot. It's just that Mohammed Shami's skillset he has and he made the ball talk. Otherwise, I think for fast bowlers, the wicket did not have much assistance. But the way he bowled four on the trot and got us in the game, full credit (to him). As I said, batters and particularly myself did not finish and we disappointed him,” he added.

Hardik's comments came after his unbeaten 53-ball 59 couldn't take his team home. Rahul Tewatia (20 off 7), as Pandya mentioned, turned the game around with three back-to-back sixes off Anrich Nortje in the penultimate over of the chase but GT couldn't capitalise on it as it failed to hunt down 12 runs in the final over.

IPL 2023: Skipper Hardik Pandya opens up on GT's shocking loss vs DC, says 'it boils down to me'

MI vs RR, 1000th IPL game: Listing milestone matches in cash-rich league

Kolkata Knight Riders CEO and managing director Venky Mysore admits the franchise does not regret not retaining players that are now bringing laurels to other franchises, someone like Shubman Gill. Speaking on the sidelines of the Knight Golf event, as reported by PTI, Mysore said he would rather be happy for the players that they developed and now those who are doing well for other teams than cribbing over it, as he thinks KKR made a right call based on the available information.

Shubman Gill, who played for KKR for a couple of seasons, was picked by Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2022 auctions – and that move paid dividends as the young right-hander scored 483 runs the past season and helped GT win the maiden IPL title.

Even as things stand, Gill is on the course of bagging the Orange Cap, as in eight outings so far, he has scored 333 runs and is only behind Faf du Plessis on the chart.

“There is actually happiness when we see some of the players we have developed go to other franchises and do well — Shubman Gill is an example,” Mysore said, as quoted by PTI.

Not just Gill, KKR did let go of a few other players who have performed well for their new franchises thus far this season – the examples of whom are Ajinkya Rahane and Kuldeep Yadav. While Kuldeep is the joint-highest wicket-taker for Delhi Capitals in eight games played, Rahane’s transformation under MS Dhoni in CSK is turning heads around the cricket world.

Admitting that IPL rules further make it difficult for franchises to keep a very limited number of players, Mysore said it's not easy to let some good names leave, but harsh calls needs to be taken. Justifying this, he said in 2021, KKR made it to the finals on the back of performances from the Indian duo of Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas alongside Windies’ Andre Russell and Sunil Narine – all of whom need no introduction.

And with IPL rules allowing every franchisee to retain just four players, those players made the cut while others, unfortunately, did not.

“The limitation as you know, is the rules the IPL and BCCI make. In the 2022 auction, we were allowed to keep only four players. There’s always a debate. There are always eight or nine whom we would like to keep, you had to select four out of those. It’s tough, but that’s the system though. It happens to every team. (KKR captain) Shreyas (Iyer) was with Delhi, and he’s with us, so on and forth… I can give any number of examples. It’s never a regret, and the decisions were made based on the set of information that was available at that point. We believe those were the right decisions we made, but it’s always tough to lose some players,” Mysore opined.

He added that in the end, it makes him happy that KKR’s performers went for huge numbers in the auction, and that some of them are even doing well for their sides.

“Rahul Tripathi (8.5 crores to Sunrisers Hyderabad), Lockie Ferguson (Rs 10 crores GT), Prasidh Krishna (Rs 10 crore to Rajasthan Royals) you can name several of them who went for big money at auction.

“So, when you see those types of numbers you feel happy for them. It’s always a little backhanded compliment to our ability to bring those types of players and grow them in our setup,” Mysore added.

It’s been some time since Rinku Singh unleashed that onslaught on Yash Dayal to hand Gujarat Titans perhaps the greatest come-from-behind win in IPL history. And on Saturday, April 29th, both teams are back again to face off each other in Match 39 of IPL 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

After that memorable outing in Ahmedabad, fates changed for both teams, as for Gujarat, they went onto win three games and are sitting comfortably in the top three on the points table, while KKR had a contrasting run - losing four games and are seventh on the list with just six points. In their previous match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR batters came good, with Jason Roy hitting a fifty and captain Nitish Rana continuing his good form, scoring 48 from 21 balls. The man who scored a hundred for KKR this season - Venkatesh Iyer will again hold the key tonight, while Andre Russell, aka Dre Russ and GT's nemesis Rinku Singh, have lower order duties to take care of. ALSO READ: IPL 2023: LSG down PBKS by 56 runs on home turf after milestone performance with bat In the bowling department, the addition of young leggie, Suyash Sharma has done wonders for the home side; plus, with two mystery spinners in Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, they will be a line-up to reckon with. On the other hand, the defending champions have been all but in good form since losing to KKR at home. Termed ‘balanced’ by many, Gujarat didn’t disappoint anyone – be it in batting, bowling, or even fielding. From top to bottom, they have match winners who can do it on the big day. While their batting is one to look out for, Gujarat’s bowling has been equally good. Combination of two Afghan spinners - Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed, have worked in their advantage, and with tonight’s game taking place at Eden Gardens – where the spinners are likely to get some assistance, the pair could trouble the KKR batters. Result Prediction – Even though KKR won its last game, and considering they are playing at home, they are likely to suffer a beating at the hands of table-toppers GT. Predicted XIs of both teams – KKR - N Jagadeesan (wk), Jason Roy, Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana (c), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, David Wiese, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Suyash Sharma GT - Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya (c), Vijay Shankar, Abhinav Manohar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Noor Ahmad, Mohit Sharma

IPL 2023, Match 39: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans - Match Preview and Result Prediction

Gujarat Titans (GT) are going strong in the IPL 2023 edition. After the end of half of their league games, the defending champions have five wins from seven games and occupy the second spot in the points table following their 55-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at home on Tuesday (April 25). So far, the likes of Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Sai Sudharsan, Md Shami, Rashid Khan, etc. have done well with some contributions from others as well.

Yash Dayal, one of their top performers in IPL 2022 campaign where he ended with 11 scalps in nine games, has been out of the playing XI ever since Rinku Singh slammed him for five successive sixes in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s stunning win over Gujarat early this season. Requiring 29 off the last six balls in pursuit of 205, Rinku smashed five straight sixes off Yash to dent the pacer's confidence. Since then, he has lost his place in the playing XI and captain Hardik revealed that he is not doing well, with his return unlikely in the remainder of the season.

“I can’t confirm that (on his chances of Yash Dayal playing again this season)," Hardik said when enquired about Dayal, after GT-MI tie, on Star Sports. "He fell ill and lost 7-8 kilos after that match. There was a spread of viral infection during that period and also due to the pressure he had faced, his condition is presently not good enough to take the field. Someone’s loss is someone’s gain at the end of the day. It is going to take a long time before we see him on the field,” Hardik added.

Yash ended with match figures of 4-0-69-0 during GT's loss versus KKR. He will hope to recover from illness at the earliest and stage a comeback in the business end of the ongoing tournament. At present, Gujarat have quite a lot of boxes ticked and look set to enter the playoffs. Nonetheless, they will need to retain the winning momentum in the second half of the league.

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) beat five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 35 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (April 25). Being asked to bat first, in Ahmedabad, the defending champions rode on Shubman Gill's 56, David Miller and Abhinav Manohar's 46 (22) and 42 (21) respectively and Rahul Tewatia's 5-ball 20* to post 207 for 6.

In reply, GT restricted the Rohit Sharma-led MI line-up for 152 for 9 to lose by 55 runs. After the game, former Indian captain-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra lauded Hardik's captaincy skills and feels he is growing and maturing with each game.

Chopra said on JioCinema, "It's hard to win a match from a defensive position, we've seen this in the TATA IPL. The point about captaincy was very salient. The game started with fast bowlers bowling quite often with discipline due to the movement of the ball. Soon after, spinners were introduced at the right time. They made an error last game (versus Rajasthan Royals) in judging the dew and brought Noor at the end and Hetmyer punished him."

He added, "He learned from that and ensured Noor's overs were done earlier. Rashid and Noor, two spinners with five wickets, and Hardik's captaincy just seems to keep improving. Mohit wasn't playing well but he still sent him to bowl the final over and take crucial wickets even though he could've done that himself as a captain. He changed Mohit's day from bad to good to maintain his confidence. I think Hardik Pandya as a captain is growing and maturing."

Hardik was promoted as India's ODI vice-captain early this year and has been leading the T20I line-up ever since Rohit Sharma has been out of the scheme of things in the format following the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

IPL 2023: 'Hardik Pandya is growing and maturing as captain' - Former Indian opener after GT beat MI

Match 35 of the IPL 2023 edition, on Tuesday (April 25), saw the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) take on the five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Hardik Pandya & Co. rode on Shubman Gill's 56, blistering knocks from David Miller, Abhinav Manohar and Rahul Tewatia to post their highest total, 207 for 6, and beat MI by 55 runs.

Being asked to bat first, the IPL 2022 winners were off to a slow start and lost Wriddhiman Saha early. Gill looked in his elements with some sublime hits and upped the ante -- taking on Cameron Green -- but lost skipper Hardik for 13 (13). Against the run of play, Gill departed for a 34-ball 56. Piyush Chawla was impressive once again as he applied the brakes on GT's scoring rate and dismissed Hardik and Vijay Shankar.

However, Miller (22-ball 46) and Manohar (21-ball 42) attacked Riley Meredith, Chawla and Green before Tewatia (5-ball 20*) joined in as GT managed 77 runs off the last five overs. In pursuit of 208, MI lost captain Rohit for cheap (2). Ishan Kishan struggled against the early movement and overall disciplined bowling from Shami-Hardik whereas Green fell for a 26-ball 33.

IPL 2023: Defending champions GT thrash Rohit Sharma's MI by 55 runs, take second spot in points table

Two newly-inducted teams Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT), will take on each other in the afternoon game in Lucknow today. Placed second on the points table with four wins in six games, LSG will aim to beat the defending champions for the first time in three meetings. Hardik Pandya's Gujarat will also like to overturn their fortunes after going down against Rajasthan in their last match.

Lucknow's win over Royals in Jaipur will boost their confidence despite their batters facing criticism for poor strike rate. While the Windies pair of Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran are at the centre of things for the hosts, captain KL Rahul is yet to give his best performance at the top. The middle order looks sorted, with Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya chipping in crucial runs mostly, the onus will fall on under-performing Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni to come good this time.

LSG's bowling has been its USP, with Indian players like Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi posing threats, while the addition of Naveen-ul-Haq has further strengthened it.

Gujarat, on the other hand, hasn't done much wrong but has been on the receiving end while defending on two straight occasions. With their batters clicking in almost every game comes as a big plus for them, GT's star-studded bowling unit needs to pull up their socks against LSG.

For the nth time, all eyes will be on opener Shubman Gill, who has 228 runs in five matches, and Sai Sudharsan, who is also in fine form, hitting 176 runs in IPL 2023. The overseas pair of Alzarri Joseph and Noor Ahmad makes things interesting too.

Result Prediction -

Given LSG has done well across both innings this season, they will start as favourites against GT in the Saturday afternoon clash.

Predicted XIs of both teams -

LSG - KL Rahul(c), Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran(w), Ayush Badoni, Naveen-ul-Haq, Avesh Khan, Yudhvir Singh Charak and Ravi Bishnoi

GT - Wriddhiman Saha(w), Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya (c), Abhinav Manohar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Shami and Noor Ahmad

IPL 2023, Match 30th: Lucknow Super Giants vs Gujarat Titans - Match preview and result prediction

Gujarat Titans were going nicely with one wicket down at the score of 72 runs in about 11 overs against the Lucknow Super Giants but two quick wickets derailed their innings. One of those two wickets came on the bowling of Amit Mishra - the veteran leg-spinner, who took Abhinav Manohar out but the credit must go to fielder Naveen-ul-Haq for taking a sensational catch.

Manohar played an inside out shot on a flighted ball by Mishra in the 12th over. The ball seemed to be travelling to the boundary between mid-wicket and long-off but Naveen had other plans. The Afghan ran fast and dived full stretch to catch the ball before it hit the ground to send Manohar packing.

Have a look at the wicket here which came just after Wriddhiman Saha's wicket at long-on:

The Titans lost the steam after these two quick wickets. Skipper Hardik Pandya, however, played a brilliant innings of 66 off 50 to help the team set a target of 135/6 in their 20 overs. Apart from Hardik, Saha scored 47 off 37 but apart from those two, no other batsman could get going.

Earlier, GT won the toss and elected to bat first but had a horrible start with star opener Shubman Gill, as predicted correctly by presenter Akash Chopra, got out cheaply - on a duck to be precise. Saha and Pandya then added 68 runs for the second wicket but after the quick wickets of Saha and Manohar, GT couldn't get going.

Pandya stayed on one end but kept losing partners at the other end in Vijay Shankar (10 off 12) and David Miller (6 off 12). For LSG, Krunal Pandya took 2/16 in his four overs while Marcus Stoinis took 2/20 in three overs he bowled. Apart from them, Naveen and Mishra also chipped in with a wicket each.

IPL 2023: LSG's Naveen-ul-Haq takes sensational diving catch to dismiss GT's Abhinav Manohar - WATCH

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Gujarat Titans batter Shubman Gill might struggle on the Lucknow surface as it won't be a flat pitch. Knowing GT holds a unbeaten head-to-head record over LSG, Gill, who is among the contenders for the Orange Cap, could be under some pressure.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra talked about GT's batting lineup, saying the opening pair that has got them success will have a challenging time ahead of them against the LSG bowlers. Breaking it further, Chopra added Saha might begin well, but doesn't pose huge scores.

About GT's Sai Sudharsan, Chopra feels he is the dark horse, and with form on his side, the left-handed batter could make the difference with the bat, while the same goes for South Africa's David Miller, who is better during a run-chase.

"In batting, Wriddhiman Saha gives starts but doesn't make a big score. There will be pressure on Shubman Gill because this pitch will not be that flat. [B] Sai Sudharsan has been very, very good but a run-a-ball. David Miller is brilliant and is more effective in a run chase," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

GT's bowling line up that is good on paper, has struggled to defend totals on two straight occasions. However, Aakash feels some big names in the rank will benefit the side, adding captain Hardik Pandya quota of overs too, who has found success with the new ball.

"Gujarat have a very good bowling attack. They have Mohammad Shami, Alzarri Joseph, Mohit Sharma and Joshua Little. Then they have got Rashid Khan, and Hardik Pandya is bowling his full quota of overs," Chopra added.

While Lucknow is coming off from a close win over Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat lost their previous encounter against the inaugural IPL winners by three wickets. At LSG's home stadium today, this contest is expected to be a mouth-watering one.

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) hosted last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 23 of IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday (April 16). Asked to bat first, defending champions GT rode on contributions from Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya, David Miller and Abhinav Manohar to post a competitive 177 for 7.

In reply, Sanju Samson's RR were in a spot of bother and reduced to 55 for 4 before the captain's counterattacking 32-ball 60 and Shimron Hetymer's 26-ball 56*, along with timely hits from Dhruv Jurel and R Ashwin, took their side to a thrilling three-wicket win in the final over. During the end overs, GT's head coach Ashish Nehra was seen constantly talking to David Miller, stationed at the deep. Despite Nehra's valiant efforts, his suggestions didn't work as GT bowlers lost the plot in the end to lose the clash.

After the game, Nehra's former India teammate Virender Sehwag opined on the former's on-field tactics and said on Cricbuzz, "We know Ashish Nehra from childhood and so I feel he was just dealing with his anxiety by talking to the fielders on the boundary. But what that might do is sometimes it might put pressure on the players. He said something to Shami too when he was on the boundary, and then even Shami ended up getting hit for runs in his last over."

The game is never over till it's over, another lesson for us. A lot of matches left, we still need to play a lot of group cricket even if we had won today."

'It might put pressure': Virender Sehwag on Ashish Nehra's on-field tactics in GT-RR IPL 2023 tie

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson led from the front as he scored 60 off 32 and his team beat the defending champions Gujarat Titans by three wickets to go top of the points table.

Sanju's innings gave Royals much needed impetus after they lost their star openers Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal inside three overs. The highlight of Captain Sam's knock, however, was three back-to-back sixes he hit off GT's gun bowler Rashid Khan.

Rashid came on to bowl the thirteenth over of the Royals' chase with Rajasthan four down for 66. Samson was playing on 29 while Shimron Hetmyer, who himself scored a belligerent 56 off 26, was just finding his groove.

Nonetheless, Hetmyer took a single of the first ball and then Captain Sam unleashed his beast mode on Rashid Khan, smacking him for three sixes in a row. Have a look at the video here:

IPL 2023: RR's Captain Sam hits three consecutive sixes off GT's Rashid Khan - WATCH

Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya in a recent chat, revealed that he was interested in joining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) instead of GT when both the new franchises were being inducted in the IPL in 2022.

Speaking to Gaurav Kapoor in Titans' podcast, Hardik also said that it GT coach Ashish Nehra who talked to him into joining GT and offered him the captaincy.

“I did get a call from the other franchise (Lucknow Super Giants) as well, which was a new franchise in IPL. Someone who I knew (KL Rahul) was leading the team. For me, it was very important, considering the stage at which I was, where I really wanted to play with a person who has known me,” Hardik said in the podcast.

“I always found that people who know me have a different perspective than people who have never come across or come close to me. When I got the opportunity to work with someone I know, I was very keen to go to that side,” he added.

“But then Ashu pa called me. At that time, the team also didn't have the permission to be part of the IPL. It was very haywire, things weren't even settled. He said, 'I'm going to be the coach. It isn't fixed yet, but I will be coach'. I was like, 'Ashu pa, if you weren't there, I wouldn't have even considered this because you're saying this… I've always felt you are one person who has understood what I am',” Hardik told Kapoor.

"I'm simple to work with, the one who knows me, know what I am. I think he (Nehra) comes in those categories who has found the right side of me. I was completely off the grid because I took a sabbatical, and I was away from the sport. I had decided not to be available for anything.

“I told him, 'Ashu pa, it's very important for me to know what you're looking at'. We had a good chat. I was like, ‘okay let me think about it’. Moments after disconnecting the call, he dropped me a message saying 'if you're ready, I would like you to take the captaincy'. That was a surprise for me. I didn't expect that. I've never been a person who has ever run behind anything. If someone comes, it comes. When I got to know, I was in a different zone,” concluded GT skipper.

Notably, Hardik eventually joined GT as skipper and led them to the IPL title in their first season only, beating Rajasthan Royals by seven wicket in the final.

Also Read: Virender Sehwag suggests change in batting order for KKR's Andre Russell “But then Ashu pa called me. IPL 2023: GT skipper Hardik Pandya reveals he was interested in joining LSG

On Thursday (April 13), the Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosted the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali in what is match 18 of IPL 2023. After a loss versus the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at home, GT are eager to get back to winning ways and move ahead in the points table. At the coin toss, Hardik Pandya returned to the playing XI after missing his side's previous tie (for being unwell), and reflected on their unbelievable defeat after Rinku Singh's heroics propelled KKR to a three-wicket triumph.

In match 13, GT hosted KKR at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Riding on fifties from Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar, the hosts posted 204 for 4. In reply, KKR was well-placed, at 128 for 2, courtesy of Venkatesh Iyer's 83 (40) and skipper Nitish Rana's 45 (29) before stand-in captain Rashid Khan's hat-trick turned the game in GT's favour. Needing 29 off the last over, left-hander Rinku slammed five sixes on the trot (off Yash Dayal) to take his side past the finish line in a memorable run-chase.

Thus, Hardik reflected on his side's shocking defeat against KKR on Thursday evening. After electing to bowl first versus Punjab, he said, "Just looks like a good wicket, and from whatever I've seen it's good to chase. Was a one-in-a-million defeat. We are a kind of team that takes it with a smile. Played good cricket until that last over. It happens. It's a fresh game. We'll come out and smile, and throw some punches."

"Targets like these, sometimes they become one-sided games. Tewatia has endured a reputation sorts in recent times as a pitch-hitter while winning matches for GT late on. He has been influential for the franchise in the last two seasons where he also helped them win crucial encounters in the 2022 season. He credited PBKS bowlers for pulling their side back in the contest after Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill had given the visitors a good start.

“Credit should be given to them for pulling it back. Towards the end, it was reversing and it became difficult to hit at will. But this is cricket - they came back well but we finished the game to be on the winning side," said Tewatia.

Speaking on his approach in the contest and with a handful of deliveries to go in the contest, Tewatia was full of confidence.

IPL 2023: Rahul Tewatia opens up on match-winning cameo vs PBKS, says 'I backed myself and executed the shot'

Shubman Gill has been in the form of his life. After slamming a double ton in ODI cricket early this year, Gill scored his second Test hundred during India's home Tests versus Australia and is looking in good touch in IPL 2023 for the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT).

Gill scored a 49-ball 67 -- his second fifty of the season -- in GT's six-wicket win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mohali on Thursday (April 13). While many criticised his poor strike rate in the end overs and his inability to finish the run-chase, the right-hander is surely becoming a run-machine in all formats.

Recently, former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja lavished huge praise on Gill as he agreed with the prediction that he could be the next best batsman after Virat Kohli in Indian cricket. On his Youtube channel, Raja said, “He has so much potential, he has so much time. He looks so naturally beautiful when he plays. When he drives, there's a curve on the shot. He has a lot of time to play his strokes. It doesn't matter if he scores on the off side, on side, hook or pull, it's just so beautiful and neat-and-clean. Many predict that he could be the next best batsman after Virat Kohli. He has touch, class, and elegance like Rohit Sharma. And his temperament is quite strong."

Ramiz further added, "From Tests, ODIs, and T20Is as well, he has tormented the bowlers. When you see him, it seems the time has stopped. At such a young age, he already has records. Sky is the limit for him."

Gill will be eager to carry on the momentum and also maintain a healthy strike rate in the remainder of IPL 2023 and help Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat defend their title in the ongoing IPL season. The right-hander has become India's regular across formats and is set to open with captain Rohit Sharma in this year's ODI World Cup, at home, in October-November.

'Many predict he could be the next best batsman after Kohli': Raja lauds Gill, reserves huge praise for him

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 18 of the IPL 2023 edition on Thursday evening (April 13), at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Opting to bowl first, GT restricted Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab for 153 for 8 courtesy of Mohit Sharma's 2 for 18. In reply, GT dominated the run-chase for a large part but Punjab bowlers stretched the game till the final over where Rahul Tewatia's timely hit (5 not out off 2 balls) propelled the defending champions to a six-wicket win with a ball to spare.

From GT, opener Shubman Gill top-scored with a 49-ball 67. While he continues to grow in stature with his consistency, questions still arise on his ability to finish a run-chase and strike big towards the latter stage of the innings. He reached 35 off 22 balls but slowed down considerably, with GT losing Sai Sudharshan and captain Hardik Pandya, during the fag end of the run-chase. As a result, Gill took another 18 balls to get to his fifty. Holding one end, he was expected to complete the run-chase but got dismissed in the final over, by Sam Curran, with GT still requiring six off four balls.

Thus, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has schooled Gill and asked him to take a leaf out of MS Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all-time.

Manjrekar, in conversation with ESPNCricinfo, said, "Champion teams are those who are mindful of their weak areas even when winning matches and tackle the same. Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers."

He further opined, "From this game, the takeaway is that if a batter is set, he should try and finish the game in the 18th or 19th over. If you are taking it till the end, show a temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t get out. Shubman Gill might be asked how the game went to the 20th over. Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet."

Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over."

Thus, Gill will be eager to remain unbeaten in GT's upcoming run-chases in IPL 2023 and also increase his strike rate as his inning progresses.

Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers." Also Read: 'You will get a tight slap from cricket': Sehwag SLAMS Shubman Gill after GT's close win over PBKS in IPL 2023 He further opined, "From this game, the takeaway is that if a batter is set, he should try and finish the game in the 18th or 19th over. If you are taking it till the end, show a temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t get out. Shubman Gill might be asked how the game went to the 20th over. Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet." Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls." At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over." Thus, Gill will be eager to remain unbeaten in GT's upcoming run-chases in IPL 2023 and also increase his strike rate as his inning progresses.

'Show temperament like MS Dhoni": Manjrekar schools Shubman Gill after GT's close win over PBKS in IPL 2023

Gujarat Titans (GT) returned to winning ways in IPL 2023 edition on Thursday evening (April 13). Locking horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mohali, GT restricted Shikhar Dhawan & Co. to 153 for 8 and chased down the target in 19.5 overs with six wickets in hand. Although GT was on course to reach the target for most part of their run-chase, they were strechted by all means by the Punjab bowlers as the defending champions managed to edge past them on the penultimate ball of the contest.

Shubman Gill top-scored for GT, and overall, with a 49-ball 67 but could not remain unbeaten as Sam Curran rattled his stumps in the last over, with six required off the last four balls. While the in-form right-hander was at 35 off 22 balls, he took another 18 balls to reach the 50-run mark. Thus, he was criticised for being slow in the end overs, increasing the pressure and then succumbing to it in the final over. Eventually, Rahul Tewatia's timely hit (5 not out off 2 balls) sealed the deal for GT but former cricketer Virender Sehwag has slammed Gill's approach.

Sehwag said on Cricbuzz, "He scored 67 off 49 balls but when did he reach his fiifty? He reached his fifty off maybe 41-42 balls so in 7-8 balls he has scored 17 more runs. The accelration came there, after he had reached his fifty. If even that had not happened then GT would have chasing maybe 17 instead off 7 in the last over."

He further added, "You can't think let me score a fifty and we will anyway win the match. This is cricket. The moment you think about your own performance (instead of the team), you will get a tight slap from cricket. You can't think like that. If he had showed the same intent and played at close to a strike rate of 200 when he was nearing fifty then he could have reached his milestone a lot earlier and save more deliveries for his team."

'You will get a tight slap from cricket': Sehwag SLAMS Shubman Gill after GT's close win over PBKS in IPL 2023

IPL 2023 edition has produced some thrilling encounters already. Match 13 of the cash-rich league saw the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Ahmedabad on April 09. Opting to bat first, GT rode on fifties from Sai Sudharshan and Vijay Shankar to post 204 for 4. In reply, KKR was 128 for 2 courtesy of Venkatesh Iyer (83 off 40) and skipper Nitish Rana (45 off 29) but post Rashid Khan's hat-trick, it seemed that GT will get past the finish line comfortably. KKR needed 29 off the last over before Rinku Singh (21-ball 48*) hit five sixes on the trot to take his side home, by three wickets, on the final ball of the contest.

Yash Dayal was the bowler who faced Rinku's onslaught and failed to defend 29 in the last six deliveries. He was disheartened after the end of proceedings and wasn't part of GT's XI in their next outing, where they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mohali on Thursday (April 13). It is to be noted that Dayal was part of GT's IPL 2022 triumph and the 25-year-old played nine games where he accounted for 11 scalps.

Rahul Tewatia, who starred in GT's last-over win over PBKS (hitting a 2-ball 5*), revealed how he motivated Dayal after Rinku's heroics. "He was one of our main bowlers. We became champion last season and he played a massive role in it. He bowled well with the new ball as well in the death last year,” Tewatia, who resorted to a lap shot over fine-leg with 4 required off 2 balls, told reporters on Thursday evening (April 13).

He further opined, "One match cannot change the fact of what he has done for us. I don’t think anyone in the team has given him any sympathy."

Tewatia added, "I told him, ‘One match has gone bad. If you want to go down then only you can hit the rock bottom otherwise at GT no one will ever make you feel bad about it. Keep practising and execute what didn’t happen that day and wait for your chance. This is the worst, you can’t go any lower than this."

Dayal was replaced by Mohit Sharma in GT's face-off versus Punjab in Mohali. The move paid rich dividends as the veteran pacer, on debut for Gujarat, ended with 2 for 18 to bag the Player-of-the-Match award.

'Nobody in GT gave Yash Dayal any sympathy': Tewatia recalls how he motivated pacer after Rinku's onslaught

After a shocking loss at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), courtesy of Rinku Singh's unbelievable finish, defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) got back to winning ways as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets in an intense run-chase of 154 at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Thursday evening (April 13). With this win, GT now have six points from four games and occupy the third spot in the points table.

Opting to bowl first, GT removed Yash Dayal from the playing XI -- who conceded 29 off the last over versus KKR -- as Mohit Sharma, India's 2015 ODI World Cup member, got the nod in the playing XI. Mohammed Shami struck early as he removed Prabhsimran Singh for duck (second on the trot). In-form skipper Shikhar Dhawan also departed for eight as PBKS was on the back foot in the powerplay overs.

While Bhanuka Rajapaksa (20 off 26) and Matthew Short (36 off 24) added runs for the side, the duo couldn't make the most of their starts as GT bowlers remained disciplined and didn't allow Punjab to dictate terms.

Jitesh Sharma, Sam Curran, and Shahrukh Khan (9-ball 22)'s contributions took Punjab to a moderate 153 for 8 as GT were excellent on the field and in their usage of the DRS. Mohit returned with 2 for 18 on debut for his new franchise whereas other bowlers chipped in with a wicket each.

In reply, GT started off with a bang courtesy of Wriddhiman Saha. He has been in attacking mode in the powerplays and played his part with a promising 19-ball 30 before Shubman Gill took the onus upon himself. Scoring his second fifty of the season, Gill held one end and kept the scoreboard moving without dropping much sweat.

Gill lost Sai Sudharshan and captain Hardik and eventually succumbed to pressure as the chase reached the final over. He was dismissed for 67 (49) but GT's trusted finishers Rahul Tewatia (5* off 2) and David Miller, unbeaten on 17 (18), negated Sam Curran's death-bowling threat to register a six-wicket win and a ball to spare.

By virtue of this win, GT are now in the third spot in the points table.

Hosting the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rashid Khan's Gujarat Titans (GT), in absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya, scored 204-4 after opting to bat first but couldn't defend the score as they failed to defend 29 off the last six balls.

Rinku Singh smashed a breathtaking 21-ball 48*, after KKR's Venkatesh Iyer's 43-ball 80 and skipper Nitish Rana's 45 (29), to shatter defending champions GT's hopes. From GT, there were plenty of positives with fifties from Sai Sudharsan (53), Vijay Shankar's 24-ball 63*, laced with 4 fours and 5 sixes at 262.50, and Rashid's hat-trick but it all ended in a losing cause.

Shankar, who scored 56 runs in his first two outings in IPL 2023, is in good form. He started 2019 with some good knocks for India as well, before the 2019 ODI World Cup squad was announced. In another ODI WC year, with the showpiece event to be held in India in October-November, Ravi Shastri opened up on his form.

It is to be noted that Shastri was India's head coach when Shankar was picked, surprisingly ahead of Ambati Rayudu, for the ODI WC in 2019. While speaking on Star Sports, the former cricketer-turned-commentator said, "The fact that Vijay was picked for the World Cup is because he had this kind of talent. And I am glad that he has gone back, worked hard, and not given up. You know he has had some tough times, he has had an operation as well, but he has come back strong."

Shastri added, "Beautiful hitting today because he is a clean striker of the ball, he has got a wide range of shots and, because of his reach and height, he can hit the ball a long, long way. Great to see. This is the strength of the Gujarat Titans. They have got some power hitters in the back end of the innings. So if they get off to a good start then they are a very dangerous side at the back end of the innings."

Shankar-starrer GT will now face Punjab Kings (PBKS), at the IS Bindra Cricket Stadium, Mohali, on Thursday (April 13).
