Sunak said that he has “enormous respect” for PM Modi and said that he is keen to support him in making G20 an enormous success.

Speaking exclusively to ANI, Rishi Sunak said, “I am a proud Hindu. That’s how I was raised, that’s how I am. Hopefully, I can visit the Mandir while I am here for the next couple of days. We just had Rakshabandhan, so from my sister and my cousin, I have all my Rakhis.”

“I didn’t have time to celebrate Janmashtami. But hopefully, as I said I can make up for that if we visit a Mandir this time,” he added.

He further said that faith is something very important as it gives strength and resilience during stress.

Earlier today, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with his UK counterpart Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 Summit being held in the national capital under India's presidency. The meeting between the two leaders was held at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, the venue of the Summit.

Talks between the two leaders followed their meeting held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May this year in which they had discussed the India-UK free trade agreement, innovation, and science along with ways to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The two countries are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement, talks for which talks had begun in 2022. The 12th round of negotiations for the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took place from August 8 to 31 this year. 
 
In August this year, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and the UK’s Secretary of State for Trade Kemi Badenoch took stock of the FTA and agreed on ways to take the negotiations ahead. The 13th round of negotiations is due to take place in September.

Earlier on Saturday, PM Modi and Rishi Sunak participated in Session 1 on 'One Earth' during the G20 Summit. Sunak said that the world is looking to G20 to provide leadership and that the leaders are meeting at a time of enormous challenges. He expressed confidence that the leaders will together be able to address the challenges.

In a post shared on X, Sunak stated, "15 years ago, #G20 leaders came together for the first time to restore global growth after the financial crisis. We meet at a time of enormous challenges – the world is looking to the G20 once again to provide leadership. Together I believe we can address these challenges."

PM Modi welcomed world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK PM Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and others as they arrived to attend the Summit at the Bharat Mandapam venue.

Rishi Sunak and PM Modi warmly greeted each other with 'Namaste' and shook hands. The two leaders also hugged each other as they posed for cameras.

Sunak, accompanied by wife Akshata Murty had arrived in Delhi on Friday. This is Rishi Sunak's first visit to India since he assumed the office of Prime Minister of UK in October last year.

India and the UK are bound by strong ties of history and culture, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. India’s multifaceted bilateral relationship with the UK intensified with its upgradation to a Strategic Partnership in 2004.&nbsp;

UK PM Rishi Sunak, wife Akshata to visit Akshardham temple in Delhi on Sunday

As New Delhi gears up to host the upcoming G20 summit, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced that they are taking an operational pause in their ongoing Exercise Trishul in the northern sector and that the fighter aircraft involved will not be flying between September 7 and 10, reported news agency ANI, on Thursday (September 7) citing officials.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian Air Force’s Trishul training</h2>

Since September 4, the Indian Air Force has been carrying out a major training exercise codenamed Trishul in the northern sector of the country, along the border with China and Pakistan.&nbsp;

The exercise involves major fleets&nbsp;of fighter aircraft, including the Rafale, Mirage 2000 and the Su-30MKIs. Additionally, heavy-lift transport aircraft and choppers including the Chinooks and Apache are also participating in the drill which is supposed to end on September 14.&nbsp;

<h2>IAF officials on preparing for the G20 summit in Delhi</h2>

According to ANI, IAF officials said that only the flying operations of the aircraft involved in Trishul would be paused while other routine flying operations would continue as planned.&nbsp;

Between September 7 and 10, the IAF will also start operating its Phalcon airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) aircraft to keep an eye on the air space across the country as well as protect the air space over the Indian capital for the upcoming G20 summit, reported ANI, citing defence sources.&nbsp;

The IAF will also reportedly deploy its Rafale and other fighter jets at their advanced air bases to protect Delhi and will use surface-to-air missile systems in and around the country’s capital to shoot down any enemy aircraft or rogue drones.

The IAF also reportedly plans on using its domestically developed NETRA surveillance aircraft to enhance monitoring capabilities.&nbsp;

"Once again, Vladimir Putin is failing to show his face at the G20. He is the architect of his own diplomatic exile, isolating himself in his presidential palace and blocking out criticism and reality. The rest of the G20, meanwhile, are demonstrating that we will turn up and work together to pick up the pieces of Putin's destruction," Sunak told reporters.

The Downing Street spokesperson said the UK will use “every opportunity” to show its support for Ukraine and further foster global support as well.

“India has a vital role to play as the world's largest democracy in calling out Russia's assault on human rights and indeed democracy itself. We will use meetings with Modi or elsewhere to encourage them to use that influence to bring an end to Putin's brutal invasion," Sunak's spokesperson said.

The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations are likely to also feature highly during the Modi-Sunak bilateral discussions, having just completed 12 rounds of negotiations but with no set timeframe for its conclusion.

The doctor suffered injuries on two fingers of his right hand. The FIR does not mention the patient's name. Cases of violence against doctors have been on the rise in India's national capital Delhi. Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital witnessed a similar turn of events in July when a 21-year-old patient, upset with his medical condition, attacked a doctor with a knife. On account of the G20 Summit, all public, private, and municipal offices and schools in Delhi would be closed from September 8 to September 10. Banks, financial institutions, and retail establishments will also be closed during this time, NDTV quoted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as saying.&nbsp;

Kejriwal's statement came shortly after the Special Commissioner of the Delhi Police wrote to the city’s Chief Secretary recommending a government holiday from September 8 to September 10.

On September 9 and 10, the G20 summit—a gathering of the heads of the 20 largest economies in the world—will take place at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan’s state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam convention hall, which was just inaugurated. India will be hosting the conference.

The recommendation is being given in an attempt to ease any potential traffic congestion and logistical issues.

“Since, most of the arrivals will take place September 8 and delegates will depart to their respective countries on September 10-11, there will be a massive movement of traffic which needs to be curtailed to ensure safe passage for the delegates from airport to hotels and to the other venues during the summit,” the letter read.

The Delhi Police are in the process of making special arrangements to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the time of the summit. The summit will see the arrival of several heads of state and diplomats, including US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In order to examine the restriction and diversion measures, the Delhi traffic police performed a mock drill on important routes connecting Pragati Maidan, the summit’s main location, with a number of hotels on Monday.

On Friday, the bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Amit Mahajan sought the response of the Centre through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Election Commission of India (ECI) and listed the matter for hearing on October 31, 2023.

"It has to be heard. It requires hearing. Notice issued," the bench said.

However, it refused to pass any interim order and also said that no order can be passed without hearing the respondents.

"We can't pass any order like this. Let the response of the other side come. We will definitely look into it," the bench said.

He further stated that this move could also be directed towards giving a nudge that may instigate political hatred triggering violence in the country.

The petition also stated that these political parties, during their meeting in Bengaluru,&nbsp; declared that they will contest the elections together in the year 2024 against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"By dragging the name of our nation, Mr. (Rahul) Gandhi very cunningly presented the name of their alliance as the name of our nation and tried to show that the NDA/ BJP and Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr. (Narendra) Modi is in conflict with our own nation, that is, INDIA and this attempt of Mr. Gandhi had created confusion in the mind of common people that the upcoming general election of 2024 will be a fight between political parties or between alliance and our country."

"That by creating this confusion, the respondent political parties want to take undue advantage in the name of our country," the plea said.

A 21-year-old man was repeatedly stabbed to death on a busy street in India's capital city Delhi allegedly over $36.26 (Rs 3,000) on Wednesday, the police said.

The video, which purported to show Yusuf Ali being stabbed in south Delhi's Tigri area, has been widely circulated on social media.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary said that the officers at Tigri police station received a call about the stabbing incident in the morning. The victim, Yusuf Ali, who as per news agency PTI reports, was a resident of Sangam Vihar, was taken to Batra Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

Yusuf's father Sahid Ali released a statement saying his son was threatened by a man named Shahrukh around three-four days ago over a financial matter, Chowdhary said.

The senior officer further added that Sahid said Yusuf had borrowed Rs 3,000 from Shahrukh who was repeatedly asking the deceased to give back the money.

As per news agency PTI reports, after the incident occurred, a video of it began to circulate on social media.

According to the reports, the two-minute video, which was recorded from across the street, shows a man brutally stabbing the deceased repeatedly multiple times outside a shop. The video also showcased people walking by but no one coming to Yusuf's rescue.

The video later showed the victim lying in a pool of blood when a few men rushed to save him and attacked the accused.

Shahrukh, who is a resident of K2 Block in Sangam Vihar, has been arrested and admitted to hospital for treatment. A case is being registered against him, said the police.

"I used to run a small tea shop at Sangam Vihar but closed it temporarily in January as I had major surgery in February. The rent of the shop was Rs 4,000 and it was not possible for me to run it for six months after the doctors suggested rest," Sahid said.

<h2>Victim was sole breadwinner of family</h2>

As per reports, the victim, Yusuf used to work as a painter and was the sole breadwinner of his family for the last several months.

"I had no idea that he had borrowed money from the accused. Yunus (19), his younger brother, cleared his Class 12 exam this year and was in Gurugram for the past few days for work when I informed him about the incident," Sahid said.

Sahid added that a boy living near his home informed him about Yusuf being stabbed.

"He took me to the spot and I saw some people taking Yusuf to the hospital in an autorickshaw. The witnesses told me that three to four people attacked my son. He was stabbed over 20 times. He was first attacked around 20 metres away from the spot and later stabbed outside the shop. I have not seen the accused but I think he has come to our house a couple of times," Sahid said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during the debate on the bill in the Lok Sabha, made a sharp attack on parties of the I.N.D.I.A bloc and said that their main aim is to “save their alliance”.&nbsp;

Shah said that the opposition parties did not participate in the debate on any of the bills that were passed in the House, rather kept staging demonstrations on their respective demands over the debate on the ongoing Manipur situation. While pointing towards opposition benches, he asked as to what changed suddenly that made them take part in the passage of bill which was related to Delhi.

“The opposition's priority is to save their alliance. The opposition is not worried about Manipur...Everyone is talking about the rights of a state. But which state? Delhi is not a state but a Union Territory...The Parliament has the right to make laws for Delhi...," Amit Shah said.

“In the year 2015, a party came to power in Delhi whose only motive was to fight, not serve...The problem is not getting right to do transfer postings, but getting control of the vigilance department to hide their corruption like building their bungalows,” Amit Shah said.

Lok Sabha passes bill to replace ordinance for control of services in Delhi; Shah slams opposition

The police said that a 42-year-old woman was shot dead near her residence in Dabri area of&nbsp; India's capital Delhi on Thursday evening. The victim was identified as Renu.

The police said that Dabri police station received information regarding an incident around 8.45 pm.

"Around 8:45 pm on Wednesday, under the Dabri police station, we got information that a 42-year-old woman was shot dead near her house. The woman was identified as Renu. She was a housewife living with her family in the Vaishali colony area under Dabri Police Station," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M Harshvardhan.

The DCP further said that police had formed several teams in order to catch hold of the suspect. However, it was later found that the attacker had shot himself dead when the police reached his house to arrest him. The accused was identified as Ashish and was aged 25.

"We formed several teams to nab the accused. We identified him and when we reached his house, he shot himself dead on the roof of his house. We found the weapon with which he had killed himself," DCP Harshvardhan said.

The DCP further added that the two had met at a gym two to three years ago.

"We found that Renu and Ashish met in a gym nearly 2-3 years back. Further investigation is on,"&nbsp;the DCP added.

<h2>Issues had arisen in Renu's family over friendship with Ashish: Police</h2>

The DCP said that the police have yet to identify as to what exactly triggered the man to kill the woman and that the officers were investigating the matter and talking to the members of both families.

“What exactly triggered the man, identified by his first name Ashish, to kill the woman, Renu Goyal, before killing himself is a matter of probe. No suicide note was recovered on Ashish or from his house. We are speaking with members of both families, their relatives, neighbours and friends for clues that may help us find the reason behind the murder and suicide,” said DCP (Dwarka) Harshvardhan.

“It was not immediately clear who shot Goyal dead. The CCTV cameras were scanned. It was found that a man approached her and shot her from close range. Thereafter, he left. Through the human intelligence network, we learnt about her friendship with a man (Ashish) and that issues had arisen in her family over their friendship,” the Hindustan Times quoted Vardhan as saying.

Delhi: Man kills himself after shooting woman dead from close range in Dabri area of Delhi

Indian national capital's Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has announced a plan to install 500 water ATMs across the city to provide drinking water treated using the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process to residents in slums and densely populated areas.

During an inspection of an RO plant in Delhi's Mayapuri, Kejriwal revealed that four water ATMs have already been installed, with 500 more planned for the first phase.

<h2>20 litres per person</h2>

Each person will reportedly receive a card that allows them to draw 20 litres of purified water per day from these ATMs. The ATMs will be strategically placed near slums and other areas where laying pipelines for water supply is challenging. Water sourced from tube wells will be treated at the RO plants before being distributed through the water ATMs.

Kejriwal emphasised that this initiative aims to ensure that even economically disadvantaged individuals have access to safe drinking water.&nbsp;

Talking to reporters, the chief minister, as per a Hindustan Times report, said: "This card is like a water ATM. Through this, each person will get 20 litres of purified water in areas with inadequate drinking water facilities."

"We know rich people install RO at their home, but now poor people will drink the same water," he remarked.

<h2>How the 'Water ATM' will work</h2>

The water ATMs, as per a PTI report, will function like a water bank, offering purified water to those living in areas with inadequate drinking water facilities.

Earlier this year, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) received directives from the chief minister to address the issue of contaminated water in various parts of the city. As part of the plan, RO-based purification plants will be set up in 20 slum clusters across Delhi to provide clean drinking water.

Additional Sessions Judge Neeraj Gaur on Monday (July 17) reserved the order on framing of charges against Amit Khanna, Krishan, Manoj Mittal and Mithun, all of the&nbsp;accused&nbsp;who were sitting in the car.

The Delhi Police has&nbsp;levelled charges under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) against the four accused.

Chargesheet was also filed by the police against three others - Ashutosh Bhardwaj, Ankush and Deepak Khanna. The chargesheet was filed under Sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender), 212 (harbouring offender) and 182 (false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) of the IPC.

The court on Monday noted that the arguments on framing of charges were complete. The court posted the matter for pronouncing its order on framing of charges against the seven accused for July 27.&nbsp;

Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava said the four accused (in the car) had "agreed upon to do such an act to drag the victim, who was stuck beneath the car, and dragged the vehicle for 13 km, which caused the victim's death".

"For such an act, they are liable to be tried under IPC Sections 302 and 120B," he added.

Shrivastava underlined that the "horrific incident" was probed from multiple perspectives.

JP Singh, the lawyer&nbsp;for the four accused, however, sought the discharge of his clients on various grounds.

"Because there is no evidence or witness that shows that there was any knowledge with the accused persons with regard to the fact that the deceased was under the driving vehicle except the disclosure statement of the accused persons, there is no CCTV footage that shows that the accused looked under the vehicle, the screenshot which the prosecution has placed on record does not have the details...," he said.

Delhi hit-and-run: Accused 'agreed' among themselves to drag girl under car for 13 km

Ten people who were stuck inside a lift in a South Extension club were on Sunday rescued by Delhi Fire Service personnel, said an official.

The Delhi Fire Service got a call at around 5:42 am on Sunday about the incident at Code Club near the South Extension Metro Station, said a DFS official.

After receiving the call, the Delhi Fire Service personnel reached the spot and rescued them safely.

On Sunday, around 2:00 am, a group of pubgoers were trapped inside an elevator for 10 hours after the lift malfunctioned and stopped working.

As the situation got intense, the rescue workers took the decision to break the lift's window and then further pulled the people to safety.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to sit together, discuss and come to a conclusion unanimously on the next Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chief, saying that the two constitutional functionaries should rise above ''political bickering''.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra said that they will take up the issue and weigh on it again on Thursday. The bench further asked the counsel for the city government and the LG to notify Kejriwal and Saxena of today's development in the court.

“Does everything run through modalities of the Supreme Court? They both are constitutional functionaries. Can’t the LG and Chief Minister sit and come up with a name on which both agree,” the bench asked.

“So much of the work of government happens away from the public eye. We are not so much concerned about DERC Chairperson appointment which will be done. We are on the larger issue. You both can sit together and sort out some issues,” it said, while posting the matter of the DERC Chairperson's appointment for the hearing on Thursday.

CJI, during the hearing, while describing ways to come to a unanimous decision, said that one way was if one functionary gives a list of three names and the other functionary accepts one name. “We don't want to step into this. We want you both to sit down and do this,” the bench added.

“The two constitutional functionaries have to rise above political bickering and they should give a name for the DERC chairperson,” the bench said.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition that was filed by the Delhi government relating to the appointment of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) Chairperson.

The top court had said on July 4 that it will inspect the constitutional facts of a provision of the Centre's recent rule overseeing appointments, such as that of the DERC chairperson. The Delhi government recently informed the court that the oath-taking of Justice (retd) Umesh Kumar as chief of the national capital's electricity regulatory authority stands shelved.

The bench had remarked that the petition presents a point of law about the validity of Section 45D of the GNCTD Act, as amended by the latest Ordinance issued by the Centre, which gives overriding powers to the Lieutenant Governor over the elected government in the matter of appointments.

A coach of Vande Bharat&nbsp;Express, going from Bhopal to Hazrat Nizamuddin Terminal of Delhi, caught on a small fire at Kurwai Kethora Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh on Monday.

However, all passengers were safe during the incident, and the officials extinguished the fire, ANI reported. The officials also shifted the 20-22 passengers present in the coach to other coaches. According to news agency PTI, no passenger suffered any injury.&nbsp;

The Indian Railways said the fire spawned from a battery box in one of the coaches of Vande Bharat Express. The train departed from Rani Kamlapati station, earlier known as Habibganj, for Hazrat Nizamuddin Terminal in Delhi.

According to an Indian Railways official, some staffers noticed the fire around 6:45 am in the battery box of the coach of Vande Bharat Express.

When the officials received the information about the fire, they instantly stopped the train between Kurwai and Kaithora stations in Vidisha. "We received information of fire and smoke that broke out in the battery box of coach C-14 of Vande Bharat Express 20171 that plies from Rani Kamlapati Station to Hazrat Nizamuddin Terminal (Delhi)," Rahul Shrivastava, West Central Railway CPRO, said. A team of fire brigade officials immediately reached the spot and evacuated all the passengers safely. The Indian Railways staff conducted the repair work.

"A fire was reported in the battery box of one of the coaches in a Vande Bharat Express at Kurwai Kethora station. The fire brigade reached the site and extinguished the fire," the Indian Railways stated.

PTI has also released visuals from the incident, which show officials trying to extinguish the fire and passengers waiting outside the coach.

Delhi police registered a case on Sunday over a call to an Air India call centre in Pune on Thursday (July 13) that warned of a hijack threat&nbsp;on a flight scheduled to depart from Delhi to Tel Aviv.

According to the police, the person who made the call to the flag carrier of India said he overheard another person saying that a flight from Delhi to Tel Aviv will be hijacked.

As per news agency ANI reports, as per the FIR filed by Delhi Police, on July 13, a call was received at the Air India call centre in Pune. The caller introduced himself as Anurag from Assam and then said that he overheard a person talking about the hijacking of the Delhi-Tel Aviv flight.

"Following the call threatening the hijacking of an Air India Delhi-Tel Avivi flight, a meeting of the BTAC (Bomb Threat Assessment Committee) was convened at Guwahati airport and a special security committee also met over it from 9:16 am to 11:15 am, on 13 July," the FIR copy mentioned.

Delhi police further said that nothing suspicious had spewed up in the probe into the threat call so far, adding that the investigation was still ongoing.

The case was registered at IGI Airport Police station under Sections 82,341,505(1)(b),507 of the IPC, said police.

<h2>Man arrested for shouting 'hijack' on Vistara flight in India</h2>

Last month, a Vistara flight from Mumbai to Delhi experienced a delay of four hours due to an incident involving a male passenger who had to be deplaned and subsequently arrested for shouting 'hijack' just before take-off.&nbsp;

Following standard operating procedure (SOP), the authorities conducted a search of the plane before granting fresh clearance for departure. A Vistara spokesperson emphasised that the airline immediately informed the authorities and handed over the passenger, identified as Ritesh Sanjaykumar Juneja.&nbsp;

Following a complaint from the flight crew, Juneja was arrested on a Vistara flight scheduled to depart from Mumbai at 6:30 pm.

Juneja claimed to be mentally ill, as reported by the police. An unnamed police officer stated that Juneja attributed his behaviour to mental instability.

Delhi police register case over call warning of possible hijack of flight to Tel Aviv

The water level in Yamuna rose to its highest-ever mark on Wednesday, breaking a 45-year-old record, said officials.

As per Delhi Flood Control Department officials, the river swelled to 207.48 metres at 12 noon on Wednesday (12 July) and reached 207.55 metres at 1:00 pm.

At 3 pm, it was recorded at 207.66 metres, according to Central Water Commission.

As per what the data showed, the water level was rising in the river since morning. It&nbsp;is expected to&nbsp;rise further, an official of the irrigation and flood control department said. Earlier it was recorded at 207.25 metres at Old Railway Bridge at 8 am on July 12.

Delhi PWD minister Atishi said the government is fully prepared to tackle any situation. "We are regularly conducting evacuations near the Yamuna River. Several embankments have been installed to prevent the breach of water," the minister said.

The water in Yamuna had breached the danger-level mark on Sunday.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the previous record for the highest level of water in the river was 207.49 metres in the year 1978.

In the year 2013, the water level reached 207.33 metres.

<h2>Delhi CM calls emergency meeting</h2>

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called an emergency meeting after the rise in the water level of Yamuna posed a threat of floods in the city.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at the Delhi Secretariat where senior officers of all departments concerned will be present, said a Delhi government official.

The Delhi CM also urged the Centre to intervene and ensure that levels of the Yamuna, flowing at an all-time high of 207.55 metres, don't rise further.

Sharing an update on Yamuna&nbsp;water levels, Kejriwal said on Twitter, "Central Water Commission predicts 207.72-meter water level in Yamuna tonite. Not good news for Delhi."

"There have been no rains in Delhi last 2 days, however, levels of Yamuna are rising due to abnormally high volumes of water being released by Haryana at Hathnikund barrage. Urge Centre to intervene and ensure that levels in Yamuna don't rise further. Highest Flood Level 207.49m (in 1978). Current Level 207.55m."

The Delhi Police on Wednesday imposed prohibitory measures under CrPC section 144 in the flood-prone areas of the city.

The CrPC's section 144 prevents unlawful assembly of four or more persons and public movement in groups.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority issued an advisory urging people to shift to safer places and warning them against passing through low-lying areas.

"As the flood situation persisted in the Yamuna river, people should stay away from power lines and reach out to the helpline 1077 in case of any need," the advisory said.

According to the officials, Garhi Mandu village near the Signature Bridge in Wazirabad has been submerged.&nbsp;

They said that the majority of the residents of the area have been evacuated and moved to safer places and the remaining are being rescued using boats.

<h2>What has happened so far?</h2>

The legal battle between PepsiCo India and farmers’ rights activist Kavitha Kuruganti began back in 2019 when the former sued a group of farmers for cultivating the FL 2027 potato variety, commonly known as FC5, over alleged infringement of its intellectual property rights (IPR).&nbsp;

Notably, the company had initially also sought $121,050 each for alleged patent infringement.

However, in 2019, the farmers’ rights activist wrote a letter to PPVFRA and accused the company of hiring a private intelligence firm that posed as potential buyers and toured fields of certain potato farmers in the Indian state of Gujarat between January and February.&nbsp;

PepsiCo India asserted that upon testing they found that the independent farmers in the state who were not under its contract were growing the FL 2027 variety of potato. Kuruganti’s letter said that the company filed individual petitions in the Ahmedabad civil court to stop the farmers from growing that type of potato.&nbsp;

Following criticism from lawmakers and farmers, the New York-based company decided to withdraw legal cases the same year, and declared it will solve the issue <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pepsico-proposes-settlement-to-gujarat-potato-farmers-sued-by-it-213790">amicably</a>.

But the fight did not end there, as Kuruganti filed a petition with the PPVFR Authority for revocation of IPR granted to PepsiCo’s FC5 potato variety, arguing that the Indian law does not allow patents on seeds.&nbsp;

<h2>What makes this type of potato so special?</h2>

The FL 2027 was developed in 1996 by a US-based plant breeder who was working with the PepsiCo division, Frito-Lay Agricultural Research. Since then the company has been manufacturing and selling the widely known Lay’s potato chips.&nbsp;

Typically, potatoes have more moisture and are also high in sugar. The excess moisture contributes to additional dehydration and energy costs during the processing and manufacturing phase of the chips while the high sugar content in normal potatoes makes them black while frying.&nbsp;

Therefore, the FL 2027, a type of potato with a moisture content at five per cent lower than other potato variations which contain at least 85 per cent moisture makes it ideal for making snacks like chips.

<h2>FL 2027 potato variety in India</h2>

PepsiCo&nbsp;set up its first potato chips plant in India in 1989. The production of Lay’s took a hit in 2008, prompting the company to develop and register a variety of potatoes in India.&nbsp;

In 2009, FL 2027 was put to commercial use and PepsiCo India gave select farmers in the Indian state of Punjab permission and seeds to grow the FC5. As of last year, the US-based snacks and beverages giant reportedly works with thousands of farmers in nearly 10 Indian states via contract cultivation and at a fixed price.&nbsp;

In India, the potato was one of the 172 crop species that are eligible to be registered for IPR protection under the PPVFR Act. As of last year, there are over 40 recognised potato varieties, out of which 17 were registered by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Others have been registered by commercial businesses such as PepsiCo India.&nbsp;

<h2>PepsiCo India’s claim over the potato seed</h2>

PepsiCo India was granted a certificate of registration for FL 2027 as an “extant variety” in February 2016 for the next six years. During the validity of the certificate, which could be extended for up to 15 years, the breeder has sole authority over that variety.

This means no one could commercially produce, sell, market, distribute, import or export it without the company’s authorisation.

This became a point of contention for Kuruganti, who said that India does not allow a patent on seed varieties. In line with this view, PPVFRA, who had granted registration to PepsiCo, revoked it by the end of 2021.

The revocation followed a letter issued by the PPVFRA in February 2022 which said that it is rejecting PepsiCo India’s application for renewal of its registration of the FL 2027.

The matter was taken up to the Delhi High Court in May 2022, when the company filed an appeal against both the refusal to renew as well as the revocation of the certificate.&nbsp;

<h2>Delhi HC upholds decision</h2>

In the court order dated July 5, Delhi HC judge Navin Chawla upheld the decision of the PPVFRA and dismissed claims of public interest violation by PepsiCo. The decision was based on a technicality which dates back to the application based on which the company obtained its certificate.&nbsp;

In a bid to obtain registration of FL 2027 as a “new variety”, PepsiCo in its application back in 2012 wrote the date of the potato variety’s commercialisation in India as December 17, 2009.&nbsp;

A “new variety” requires to conform with the criterion of originality. The propagated or harvested material should not have been sold in India sooner than one year before the date of filing the application, as per an Indian Express report.&nbsp;

Since FL 2027 could not satisfy the requirement for novelty, it was granted a registration as an “extant variety” which compiles with distinctiveness, uniformity and stability, but not originality. While the date of commercialisation in the application by PepsiCo was 2009, by then it had already been commercialised in Chile, in 2002, said the Indian media report.&nbsp;

Therefore, the certification of the FL 2027 was obtained based on incorrect information by the applicant, the court noted. As per Indian laws, any protection granted for a plant variety is subject to complete disclosure from the applicant about their invention or development.&nbsp;

In this case, PepsiCo failed on two accounts – for applying to register FL 2027 under the category of “new variety” and giving the incorrect date for its first commercialisation.

<h2>How has PepsiCo responded?</h2>

In a statement to WION, PepsiCo India’s spokesperson said, “The appeal was filed on several grounds and the Hon’ble Delhi High Court vide its order dated 5th July 2023 upheld the revocation primarily on procedural infirmities in the application and other supporting documents.”&nbsp;

It added, “The Court, however, held that exercising of rights by PepsiCo, granted vide registration of its potato variety under PPVFRA, cannot be construed as against public interest and revocation of registration by PPVFR Authority on ground of ‘public interest’ was erroneous. We are in the process of examining the order in detail to decide our options.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal released a statement on Monday saying that there is no flood threat in Delhi from the rising&nbsp;water level of Yamuna after heavy rains lashed the national capital and adjoining areas.

He further said that all the other political parties should not play blame games, asserting that now was not the time to "point fingers" at each other.

Citing reports of the Central Water Commission (CWC), Kejriwal said, "Yamuna river flowing at 203.58 metres in Delhi. It is expected to reach 205.5 metres tomorrow morning. Also, according to weather predictions, the water level in Yamuna is not expected to rise too high. A flood-like situation is unlikely. If Yamuna crosses the 206-metre mark, then we will start evacuation along the banks of the river."

The Delhi CM also commented on the potholes in the city saying that those will be filled with stones to prevent accidents. He further said that the New Delhi Municipal Corporation has been asked to resolve waterlogging issues faced by locals.

He further said that there will be an inquiry into the incidents of roads caving in, adding that the state governments in north India were reaching out to the people affected by the torrential rains.

"All the political parties will have to coordinate and seek ways to provide relief to the people. Northern India was pounded with unpreceded rains over the last few days," the Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor said.

He mentioned that Delhi received the highest rainfall in July since 1982. "There are reports that people are facing a lot of problems in other adjoining areas as well. In such a situation, we all have to come forward and help each other", Kejriwal said.

He then said that the Delhi government has directed its officials to reach out to the people after heavy rains caused chaos in the city.

IMD issues red alert in 2 Kerala districts IMD predicted heavy showers in Kerala and announced red alerts for two districts and orange alert for 11. The weather department has issued a red alert in Kannur and Idukki districts. Orange alert in Kerala has been announced in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Furthermore, IMD has issued a yellow alert for the Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. A red alert implies that the area might receive extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm, while an orange alert means very heavy showers between 6 to 20 cm. A yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 cm. Delhi Monsoon Update IMD forecast predicted cloudy skies for July 4 in the national capital Delhi. However, there's a possibility of only light showers or thundershowers. The minimum and maximum temperatures might range from 28 to 38 degree Celsius. Light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand during the next four days and East Uttar Pradesh during July 3-5. Yellow alert in Odisha IMD has issued a yellow alert in 18 districts of Odisha from July 3-7. According to the weather forecast, a few districts of Odisha might receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers. The IMD weather forecast predicted high chances of thunderstorms with lightning in some areas of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, and Bolangir districts. Odisha's Nuapada, Nawarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada might also receive heavy showers. Heavy rainfall in Goa till July 4 Konkan and Goa might continue to receive light to moderate rainfall. IMD has predicted isolated heavy to very heavy showers in some regions of the state. IMD also predicted isolated extremely heavy showers over Konkan and Goa from July 5-7. Northeast India Monsoon Update IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur during the next four days. The Delhi High Court dismissed the bail petition of Delhi's former Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia who was arrested earlier this year by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi government's excise policy.

The Court also rejected bail petitions of Vijay Nair, former communicator in charge of Aam Aadmi Party, Hyderabad-based businessman Abhishek Boinpally and Binoy Babu Binoy, (manager with a liquor company Pernod Ricard) in connection with the same case.

While refusing to grant relief to the AAP leader, the bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said that the court does not find any illegality in the trial court order that had dismissed his bail.

"The petitioner (Sisodia) is not entitled to bail and the petition is accordingly dismissed," it said.

"The possibility of tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses cannot be ruled out and Section 45 twin condition isn't satisfied. Bail Denied," said the court.

Sisodia was first arrested by the CBI in the month of February for his alleged role in the scam and has been in custody since then.

He resigned from his position following the arrest, terming the accusations against him as 'false' and said it was unfortunate that he was framed despite working honestly for the last eight years.

"These allegations are in fact nothing more than a conspiracy of cowardly and weak people who are scared of Arvind Kejriwal's politics of truth. I am not their target, you [Kejriwal] are their target. Because today not only Delhi but the people of the whole country are seeing you as a leader who has a vision for the country and the ability to bring big changes in the lives of the people by implementing it," he added. &nbsp;

The high court already denied bail to him in the CBI case in the month of May. On June 2, the court had reserved its order on his bail plea. Sisodia has&nbsp;sought bail on grounds including his wife's deteriorating health condition.

The ED has opposed the bail plea of the ex-deputy CM as well as of the others accused.

<h2>What is the excise policy scam?</h2>

The AAP government had brought in the excise policy to revolutionise the sale of liquor in Delhi by bringing in more private players. The rationale given was that the new policy will help generate optimum revenue while eradicating bootlegging and the sale of spurious liquor.

However, corruption in the distribution of permits, bribery and fraud in the funnelling of tender amounts meant that the initiative collapsed within a year.&nbsp;

It has been alleged that AAP leaders formulated the policy at the peak of the pandemic to create illegal channels of funding.&nbsp;

The anti-corruption branch of CBI questioned Sisodia over his alleged links with Dinesh Arora and other accused mentioned in the FIR.&nbsp;

The video shows two robbers on a scooter with helmets on, stopping near a couple walking by. Subsequently, one of them gets off the two-wheeler and points a gun at the couple while the other appears to frisk them.&nbsp;

However, when they are unable to find any valuables, one robber is seen handing something over to the man. According to media reports, the robbers realised that the couple had nothing with them except for a Rs. 20 note&nbsp;($0.24) and one of them was seen handing something to the couple before driving away.&nbsp;

As it turns out, they were given a Rs. 100 note by the robbers, the couple later told the police, as per media reports. One of the accounts which posted the viral video claims that the robbers were “drunk,” which was later also confirmed by the police.&nbsp;

<h2>Two robbers arrested</h2>

The police managed to find the robbers after analysing footage from nearly 200 CCTV cameras installed in the area. The two accused,&nbsp;Dev Verma and Harsh Rajput,&nbsp;reportedly aimed to join gangster Neeraj Bawana’s gang and were&nbsp;influenced by his YouTube videos.

Deputy Commissioner Of Police (DCP) of Shahdara, Rohit Meena, said, “Both the robbers had consumed a lot of alcohol at the time of the incident. After examining the CCTV footage, it was found that these robbers had created panic in many areas. We have recovered the pistol.”&nbsp;

During the investigation, the duo was found in Jagatpuri and their arrest also led police to solve four other cases following the recovery of&nbsp;a scooty used to commit the crime.&nbsp;

Furthermore, one of the accused, Rajput, already had two cases of snatching registered against him.&nbsp;

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal said, "On Saturday, the victim working as a delivery agent at Omiya enterprises, Chandni Chowk filed a complaint at the Tilak Marg police station. He alleged that he along with his associate was going to Gurgaon to deliver a bag of cash." 
 
“They hired an Ola cab from Lal Qila and when they entered the tunnel on the Ring Road, four people on two motorcycles waylaid their vehicle and took away their bag containing around Rs 2 lakh at gunpoint,” he added.

"The earthquake scared school children. People in shops rushed out. It was scary. This was more intense than the tremors last week," a local from Srinagar was quoted as saying by ANI.&nbsp;

According to reports, the tremors were also felt in Pakistan's Lahore city.&nbsp;

However, no property damage or casualty has&nbsp;been reported&nbsp;so far as&nbsp;the authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.&nbsp;

The earthquake on Tuesday comes a little more than two weeks after another quake measuring 5.2 struck Afghanistan. The epicentre was 79 kilometres southeast of Fayzabad and the quake came from a depth of 220 kilometres.&nbsp;

The quake occurred at around 10.19 am as the&nbsp;tremors&nbsp;were also felt&nbsp;in various locations around Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu &amp; Kashmir. The tremors lasted for a few seconds. However, no instance of any casualty, injuries or damage were reported.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A United States-bound Air India flight which took off from the Indian capital city of&nbsp;Delhi was diverted to Russia’s Magadan, on Tuesday after a “technical issue” in one of the engines. The diversion incidentally took place a day after the CEO of a US carrier raised concerns about flights using Russian airspace with American citizens on board amid the ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow.&nbsp;

Air India, on Thursday (June 7) also sent a replacement flight from Mumbai to Magadan to take the passengers to San Francisco from the Russian town. The flight&nbsp;touched down in San Francisco a little after midnight (local time). The incident took place in the midst of Moscow’s ban on some Western carriers and about the use of Russian airspace&nbsp;by&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;airlines with&nbsp;American passengers&nbsp;on board.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened to the Air India flight?</h2>

The San Francisco-bound flight&nbsp;from Delhi was carrying&nbsp;216 passengers and 16 crew. However, after facing some “technical issue” in one of the engines the AI173 was reported to have safely landed in the Russian town of Magadan.&nbsp;

The Indian airline went to assure that passengers were provided support on the ground and later confirmed that it would send an alternative aircraft while passengers are accommodated in local hotels in the Russian town.&nbsp;

The emergency landing was confirmed by the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia. Citing a source present at the Magadan airport, Reuters reported that Air India engineers would arrive on the reserve plane with spare parts, on Wednesday.&nbsp; 
 
It was not until Thursday that Air India addressed the "technical issue"&nbsp;Boeing 777 encountered which was an indication of low oil pressure in one of the engines.&nbsp;"The aircraft encountered a technical issue whereby the pilots received an indication of low oil pressure in one engine. Out of caution, they elected to land the aircraft at a nearby airport rather than continue the journey," said Air India.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Washington is closely monitoring the situation</h2>

US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters they are aware of the incident and “are continuing to monitor the&nbsp;situation closely.”&nbsp;He added that since the flight was bound for the US, it is “likely” that there are American citizens on board. 
 
So far, Air India has not mentioned anything about the passengers'&nbsp;nationalities. It was on Wednesday, that&nbsp;Patel told reporters that less than 50 US&nbsp;citizens were aboard the Air India flight.&nbsp;

<h2>Row between Moscow and the West over airspace</h2>

The Air India incident has brought the recent tensions between the West and Russia over its airspace to the forefront. In a retaliatory move over the thousands of sanctions against Russia, it had last year banned certain foreign carriers from using its airspace, causing disruptions in the global air transport network.&nbsp;

This&nbsp;affected the aviation industry&nbsp;as it was forced to redraw air routes to avoid flying over the largest country in the world. Multiple airlines from the US, Europe, and Japan have already stopped flying over Russia. However, Gulf, China, as well as Air India, continue to use Russian airspace which has made flying times shorter and cut costs giving them an edge over their competitors.&nbsp;

This was after the US, UK, Canada, and Europe banned Russian aircraft from flying over their airspace.&nbsp;

This move prompted US airlines to lobby in Capitol Hill and at the White House as they were losing business to foreign competitors who could take passengers between the US and Asia faster and at a lower cost. Industry lobbying group Airlines for America told lawmakers in Washington last year that the US carriers are expected to witness collective losses of up to $2 billion per year.&nbsp;

Over the years, US airlines were able to access to Russian airspace following a series of agreements between Moscow and Washington. The US-based and other foreign carriers would pay what amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars per year to the Russian government as a fee for their air traffic control support, reported the New York Times, citing industry sources.

<h2>United Airlines, Air India chiefs argue at recent global industry meet</h2>

The incident in Russia took place a day after the CEOs of United Airlines and Air India butted heads at the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) annual meeting&nbsp;held in Istanbul. Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, raised concerns about planes flying through Russian airspace with American citizens onboard.&nbsp;

“What’s going to happen if an airline lands in Russia with some prominent US citizens on board? That is a potential crisis in the making,” said Kirby, adding that this issue should be solved “before the crisis happens".

However, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson defended the airline’s use of Russian airspace. “Air India, we operate according to the ambit of what is provided to us by the nation of India and not all nations agree,” said Wilson. He added, “So there are going to be different outcomes as a consequence.”&nbsp;

The disagreement, yet again, has&nbsp;brought to the fore&nbsp;the strategic and geographic importance of Russia as the world’s largest country in global aviation. Kirby also said United was forced to stop operating several flights to India before the COVID-19 pandemic and now “we fly one and it’s an extra two hours.”&nbsp;

“It’s clearly a big impact to us,” said the US carrier’s CEO, adding that even with the extra time it cannot fly the other routes non-stop. Additionally, US carriers have also pushed for the government to discourage carriers from landing on US soil after crossing Russian airspace as they are paying Moscow for it.&nbsp;

Some Chinese airlines have also avoided flying over Russian airspace to and from the US, months after Senators urged President Joe Biden administration’s to stop Chinese airlines and foreign carriers from flying over Russia, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Should geopolitical differences affect aviation?</h2>

During the meeting in Istanbul, IATA Director General Willie Walsh told Reuters, “What we would like to see is everybody using Russian airspace. I’m clear that it's not a security or a safety issue.” Similarly, Vinod Kannan, CEO of Indian airline Vistara said as long as the “law of the land” is not violated, it should not be an issue.&nbsp;

“It's a sensitive geopolitical issue and applying geopolitics to the aviation industry that does so much to link the world, I’m not sure that’s a link that should be made,” said Wilson, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that Kirby’s concerns are not entirely unfounded. In 2018, a Norwegian Air Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing in Iran weeks after Washington had re-imposed sanctions. While the passengers flew out of Iran the next day, the aircraft was stranded for two months as its engines were made by US-based General Electric which waited weeks for a US Treasury export licence.

<h2>Air India sends replacement flight</h2>

Air India sent a replacement plane to ferry stranded passengers in Russia from Mumbai, on Thursday. “The ferry flight is carrying essentials in addition to a sufficient amount of food to cater to all passengers on the onward flight scheduled from GDX (Magadan airport) to San Francisco (SFO),” said the Indian carrier, in a statement.&nbsp;

The airline also said that “given the infrastructural limitations around the remote airport, we can confirm that all passengers were eventually moved to makeshift accommodation&nbsp;after making sincere attempts to accommodate passengers in hotels locally with the help of local government authorities.”&nbsp;

“As we do not have Air India staff based in the remote town of Magadan or in Russia, all ground support being provided to passengers is the best possible in this unusual circumstance,” said Air India. The Indian Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also confirmed that Air India told the ministry some passengers had been housed in a school building near the airport.&nbsp; 
 
In an update, on Thursday (June 8), Air India said&nbsp;Flight AI173D from Magadan (GDX) landed safely in San Francisco (SFO) at 12:07 am&nbsp;(local time). It added, "All our passengers are being extended maximum on-ground assistance with clearance formalities and provided other necessary support."&nbsp;

Air India Chief Customer Experience and Ground Handling Officer Rajesh Dogra, on Thursday, issuing an apology said, "We will fully refund the fare for your journey and, in addition, provide you a voucher for future travel on Air India," as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Air India’s passengers affected by US sanctions on Russia</h2>

A report by the Associated Press, citing Delhi-San Francisco flight passengers, said that they have been barred from leaving the makeshift accommodation where they have been staying and cannot use their credit cards to buy items from vending machines or stores because of the sanctions.&nbsp;

Additionally, speaking to the Indian media, a passenger also said how many US citizens were worried due to the ongoing tensions between Moscow and Washington.&nbsp;
