A United States-bound Air India flight which took off from the Indian capital city, Delhi was diverted to Russia, on Tuesday (June 6) after it developed a “technical issue” in one of the engines, a spokesperson from the airline. The Air India flight AI173 was reported to have safely landed in the Russian town of Magadan.&nbsp;

The incident also comes a day&nbsp;United Airlines CEO had raised concerns about flights using Russian airspace with American citizens on board, a decision which was defended by the Air India chief.&nbsp;

<h2>Air India about the incident</h2>

The flight in question which took off from Delhi and was headed to San Francisco was carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew. “The passengers are being provided support on the ground and will be provided an alternate option to reach their destination at the earliest,” said Air India, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “The aircraft is undergoing mandatory checks on the ground. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers.” Hours after the diversion, Air India confirmed that it would send an alternative aircraft from Magadan to San Francisco for passengers who are currently accommodated in local hotels in the Russian town.&nbsp;

<h2>Washington reacts</h2>

The United States on Tuesday said it is closely monitoring the situation. "We are aware of a US-bound flight that had to make an emergency landing in Russia and are continuing to monitor that situation closely. I'm not able to confirm how many US citizens were aboard the flight at this time," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters at his daily news conference.

"It was a flight that was bound for the United States. So, it is, of course, likely that there are American citizens on board. There's public reporting from Air India that they are sending – what my understanding is – a replacement aircraft to the destination to have the passengers carry on for their route, but I would defer to the air carrier to speak to anything further on this," Patel said in response to a question.

<h2>Russian aviation authority deals with passengers&nbsp;</h2>

Russia had earlier said that it was ready to give permission to the Indian airline to land an additional reserve aircraft if needed in the country’s Far East, said Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia. It also reported 220 passengers and 16 crew on board while Air India has said there were 216 passengers.&nbsp;

Rosaviatsia also said that they are checking on the aircraft's technical condition. “At present, the question of passengers' stay and accommodation is being resolved by border, customs and regional authorities,” said Rosaviatsia, as quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, an employee at the airport’s flight dispatch service in Magadan told Reuters that all passengers had been taken to hotels by buses. The anonymous source also told the news agency that the aircraft was “closed off and put under guard” as it waits for Air India specialists “to land on the reserve plane tomorrow”.&nbsp;

He added, “It’s unclear (what happened), something is wrong with the engine, something is leaking out, they’ll look into it tomorrow,” as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Arguments about using the Russian airspace</h2>

Notably, the incident also comes a day after Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, raised concerns about planes flying through Russian airspace with American citizens onboard.

“What’s going to happen if an airline lands in Russia with some prominent US citizens on board? That is a potential crisis in the making,” said Kirby, adding that this issue should be solved “before the crisis happens.”

However, on the same day, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson defended the airline’s use of Russian airspace. “Air India, we operate according to the ambit of what is provided to us by the nation of India and not all nations agree,” said Wilson, adding that the airline industry plays a critical role in connecting economies, people and cultures.&nbsp;

India's national capital New Delhi has been currently generating more than 1,100 tonnes of plastic waste every day, but only around 870 tonnes per day (TPD) is being managed or recycled, which leaves a gap of 242 TPD or&nbsp;around 22 per cent of the plastic waste load of Delhi, which finally either reaches the drains or ends up in landfills or contaminates the River Yamuna, as per the latest data.&nbsp;

A target of June 2024 has been set by the national capital to bridge this gap completely.&nbsp;Experts stated that&nbsp;officials may have to work much harder, especially considering that it was not able to implement the ban on 19 single-use plastic (SUP) items successfully.&nbsp;

Municipal bodies shared data during their meeting held with the high-level solid waste monitoring committee, as per which the current plastic waste generation figure of the national capital stood at 1,113.25 TPD, and only 871.25 TPD is being processed, leaving a gap of 242 TPD which needs immediate attention.

The committee was appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and is headed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.&nbsp;

Programme director of the municipal solid waste sector at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Atin Biswas said that waste segregation is the base for any city which is aiming to find a solution to its waste problem.&nbsp;

“At present, even this figure of 78 per cent&nbsp;of plastic being recycled seems fairly high, as Delhi is not segregating its waste like other cities. Only when that is being done, can waste be effectively separated. Until we achieve segregation at source, this target of June 2024 appears highly unlikely,” Biswas stated.&nbsp;

<h2>Capital's unfulfilled single-use plastic (SUP) goals</h2>

Meanwhile, the national capital is lagging behind its single-use plastic (SUP) goals. In Delhi, as well as other states and union territories, 19 SUP items were banned from July 1, 2022, onwards, according to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2021 which was issued on August 12, 2021.

Even though a ban was imposed, several items mentioned in the list are still commonly found in the markets of the city.&nbsp;

Fruit juice Bhiku Ram is still using plastic straws and plastic spoons at his shop. He said that he tried to use the alternatives, however, the price difference remained substantial. “Plastic is still easily available and agencies also are not too keen on enforcing such a ban,” Ram stated.

NGO Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) founder and director Ashish Jain said, “Agencies are finally beginning to act on plastic pollution, but it still needs a change in the mindset of consumers too. For instance, plastic items like plastic furniture have several alternatives, but plastic ones still exist in the market. We need to stop giving consumers such options.”

<h2>Plans to clear three dumpsites of capital</h2>

Meanwhile, the government of Delhi had earlier announced the ambitious project of clearing all three dumpsites in the national capital.&nbsp;

As per their set goals, the Okhla dumpsite should be cleared by December 2023, Bhalswa by March 2024 and Ghazipur by December 2024. Cumulatively, the three dumpsites are covering an area of 200 acres, which carries around 28 million tonnes of legacy waste.&nbsp;

Around 240 tonnes of plastic waste gets dumped in India's national capital every day, says report

Shocking details have emerged of a brutal murder where a 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a 16-year-old girl in the Indian national capital, New Delhi, on Sunday (May 28). The man has been identified as Sahil and the girl is said to be his girlfriend.&nbsp;

The entire incident has been recorded on a CCTV camera. Sahil can be seen stabbing the girl more than 20 times as people walk&nbsp;past him,&nbsp;witnessing&nbsp;the gruesome incident.&nbsp;

The girl was seen collapsing to the ground. The chilling video later shows the culprit hitting her body repeatedly with&nbsp;a slab of stone.&nbsp;In the video, he was seen walking off the crime scene, only to return within seconds to hit the girl again, who appeared to be in an unconscious state or some reports mentioned that by that time, she was already dead.&nbsp;

Deputy Commissioner of Police Suman Nalwa told news agency ANI: "We have arrested the accused - Sahil - from Bulandshahr (in) Uttar Pradesh. He used to work as a mechanic for AC and refrigerators. Further investigation is underway… we will make sure the maximum punishment is given to the accused."&nbsp;

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the murder and called it "sad and unfortunate". In a tweet written in Hindi, he said, "A minor girl was brutally murdered in Delhi. This is very sad and unfortunate. The criminals have become fearless, there is no fear of the police. L-G sir, law and order is your responsibility, please do something."&nbsp;

Swati Maliwal, who is the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, said that the city "has become extremely unsafe for women and girls". &nbsp;

She said, "16-year-old girl was stabbed 40-50 times and then was hit by a stone multiple times after which she died. All this has been captured on CCTV. Several people saw this but did not pay heed. Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls. I appeal to the central govt to call a high-level meeting with the union home minister, Delhi LG, DCW chief and Delhi CM."&nbsp;

Delhi: Man stabs minor girl more than 20 times, smashes her 'lifeless' body with stone slab

India's national capital is set to get 250 'pink parks' which will be strictly for women and men's entry will not be allowed. Speaking about this innovative plan, Delhi Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal said that they have started the work of identifying locations to establish women-only 'pink parks' in every MCD ward.

The idea is to create a "more comfortable space" for women in the city besides ensuring that they get various amenities, he stated

"Recently, in a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, I cited the example of a 'pink park' in my ward (Chandni Mahal) in old Delhi and suggested that such parks can be set up in all wards,” Iqbal said. "My idea found resonance with the Chief Minister and later, in a meeting of the civic body's Horticulture department, I proposed that each ward should have at least one such park," he added.

250 wards fall under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) jurisdiction. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Iqbal said that they have set up a 'pink park' on Mata Sundari Road as a pilot project and in these parks, women can be accompanied by children till the age of 10.

The officials will be replicating the same model in other wards. The 'pink parks' of the capital will have CCTV cameras, toilets, gym facilities and walls decorated with graffiti to offer a comfortable space to the woman.

The deputy mayor of the national capital said that one park will be identified by the councillors in their respective wards for getting converted into 'pink parks'.

"Many councillors have been told to look for locations in their wards already. This initiative is to provide better and safer places for women in public parks and I am hopeful that even councillors from other parties will co-operate in achieving this vision," he said while speaking to news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).

MCD's senior official said that Iqbal tabled the proposal in the Horticulture department's recent meeting but "we will work on it if there is a demand for it from people of the wards".

Speaking about this innovative plan, Delhi Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal said that they have started the work of identifying locations to establish women-only 'pink parks' in every MCD ward. The idea is to create a "more comfortable space" for women in the city besides ensuring that they get various amenities, he stated "Recently, in a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, I cited the example of a 'pink park' in my ward (Chandni Mahal) in old Delhi and suggested that such parks can be set up in all wards,” Iqbal said. "My idea found resonance with the Chief Minister and later, in a meeting of the civic body's Horticulture department, I proposed that each ward should have at least one such park," he added. The deputy mayor of the national capital said that one park will be identified by the councillors in their respective wards for getting converted into 'pink parks'. "Many councillors have been told to look for locations in their wards already. This initiative is to provide better and safer places for women in public parks and I am hopeful that even councillors from other parties will co-operate in achieving this vision," he said while speaking to news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). MCD's senior official said that Iqbal tabled the proposal in the Horticulture department's recent meeting but "we will work on it if there is a demand for it from people of the wards". Delhi India’s ‘most forgetful city’ in Uber’s ‘Lost and Found Index 2023’

A late-night scuffle broke out between protesting wrestlers and the police in the Indian capital city, Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday (May 3). According to media reports, the alleged incident also caused some protesters to sustain head injuries.

Three people including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti were detained after the incident, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal. According to the DCP, a group of protesters led by an AAP leader reached the protest site without due permission on Wednesday evening.

The protesters “came to the protest site along with folding beds without permission. When we intervened, the supporters became aggressive and tried to get the beds out of the truck,” said Tayal, as quoted by ANI. He added, “Subsequently, a minor altercation took place and Somnath Bharti along with 2 others were detained.” 
 
This comes as top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and others, have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)’s chief Brij Bhushan Singh after seven female wrestlers, including a minor, have complained against Singh for alleged sexual harassment and called for his arrest. 
 
The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 following the allegations and demanded criminal action against Bhushan. The Delhi Police has since filed two FIRs against the WFI president, on Friday on the allegations.&nbsp;

In a video being circulated on social media platforms, some of the protesters can be heard accusing police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol, reported news agency PTI.&nbsp;

After the incident, wrestler Bajrang Punia told ANI, “We're in need of the support of the whole country, everyone must come to Delhi. Police using force against us, abusing women and doing nothing against Brijbhushan.”

Another senior police officer said, “There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them,” reported PTI.&nbsp;

The officer also said, “They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, former wrestler Rajveer told PTI, “The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us.”

“They started hitting us. Bajrang Punia's brother-in-law Dushyant and Rahul suffered head injuries. The police did not even let doctors reach the site. Even the women constables were misbehaving with us,” he said.

Punia’s wife Sangeeta, who claims that she was pushed around by policemen, has also called for farmers and their leaders to assemble at the protest site on Thursday morning. 
 
The protests come after three months ago, prominent wrestlers came forward with sexual assault allegations against the WFI chief. Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has since announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the allegations levelled against WFI and other coaches.&nbsp;

Bangladesh Army Chief General pays tribute to war heroes on India visit

One woman was injured in a firing incident in the Indian capital city of Delhi's Saket court, on Friday (April 21), as per media reports. The woman identified as&nbsp;M Radha who is in her 40s sustained two bullet injuries one in her arm and the other on her abdomen. Initial reports suggest that four&nbsp;rounds were fired on the court premises while the injured woman&nbsp;was reportedly&nbsp;rushed to the&nbsp;Max Hospital in South Delhi's&nbsp;Saket.&nbsp; 
 
The victim who was earlier said to be in critical condition is now 'stable', as per a local media report citing officials.&nbsp;A senior police&nbsp;official told PTI, that the woman&nbsp;was with her lawyer&nbsp;when a person shot her. According to reports, the accused was dressed as a lawyer and managed to flee.&nbsp;

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary, said that the incident occurred at 10:30 am (local time). "The accused has been identified. He had lodged a case under IPC section 420 (cheating) against the victim and advocate Rajendra Jha," said Chowdhary, as per PTI. Eyewitness accounts also suggest that the accused fired four to five rounds before escaping through the court's canteen's&nbsp;back entry.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has also reported its first case of H3N2 influenza.&nbsp;

The Delhi health minister while addressing a press conference also said that they are issuing an advisory to keep a check on the spread of the virus but not many cases are being reported in the national capital. He&nbsp;noted,&nbsp;while the peak of seasonal influenza is over by March, a large number of cases continue to be reported in several parts of the country.&nbsp;

The Indian government has already issued a COVID-19 advisory for six states but Delhi is not on the list. “However, we are issuing an advisory to check the spread of influenza,” said the Delhi health minister. He also spoke about how instructions for “early screening to detect cases” have been issued to the authorities. He added, “There are not many cases in Delhi hospitals and we are closely monitoring the situation”.&nbsp;

“People who have had severe asthma or Covid are among those impacted the most by influenza. Extra precaution is needed for those aged above 65 and children below five years of age,” said Bharadwaj, as per PTI. The Delhi health minister also said that the city government has no plans to make masks mandatory but the focus is on precautionary measures like avoiding public places, washing hands, etc.&nbsp;

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP) has detected its first case of H3N2 influenza&nbsp;where a young man aged between 20 to 25 years tested positive for the virus in the state capital Bhopal. Bhopal Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Prabhakar Tiwari told PTI, on Thursday that a resident of the Bairagarh area in Bhopal was tested on Wednesday and is asymptomatic now.&nbsp;

According to health department officials, he complained of a cough and cold, subsequently, his swab sample was sent for a lab test. However, even after he tested positive for the virus the patient was not admitted to any hospital and is currently recovering at home, reported PTI.&nbsp;

Maharashtra’s Pune reports two H3N2-related deaths

A 73-year-old man in Maharashtra’s city of Pune passed away on Thursday in a civic-run hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial town, said local health officials. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said that the man was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and atrial fibrillation (an irregular and rapid heart rhythm which can contribute to blood clots) and had also tested positive for the H3N2 virus.&nbsp;

Another suspected casualty was a 67-year-old man who died on March 11 at a private hospital in Shivajinagar. “The patient complained of fever, cold and cough. He had pneumonitis. The deceased had comorbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension,” said the PMC, on Wednesday.

“A total 352 patients are afflicted with the H3N2 virus so far. They are currently under treatment and all hospitals have been put on alert. H3N2 is not fatal. It can be cured through proper medical treatment. There is no need to panic,” said the Maharashtra Health minister Tanaji Sawant.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the state's&nbsp;Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday also held a review meeting of the health department at Mumbai’s Vidhan Bhavan to check the state’s preparedness amid reports of COVID-19 and H3N2 influenza cases. "If treated early, influenza can be cured. This should be known to everyone", said the CM and has also&nbsp;directed health officials to hold&nbsp;campaigns and make people aware of the&nbsp;viruses as well as&nbsp;ensure that they are following the necessary safety protocols

India: Delhi govt asks officials to conduct screening for H3N2 influenza; Madhya Pradesh reports first case

Delhi Police on Saturday arrested three men who were found harassing and groping a 22-year-old Japanese woman on the pretext of smearing colours on her during the Holi festival in the national capital.

“Three persons, including one juvenile, have been apprehended and questioned. They have confessed their involvement in the incident as seen in the video. They all are residents of a nearby area of Paharganj,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Sanjay Kumar Sain said, according to PTI news agency.

All of them were apprehended after the police took suo motu&nbsp;action. However, further legal action will be decided on merits and in accordance with the complaint by the girl, if any, police said added.

A senior police officer said that neither the girl nor the Japanese officials made any complaint, adding that the police acted after netzines expressed outrage.

Police said they have taken the notice of the video and were verifying whether it is of a recent incident or an old one.

The police’s response came after a video went viral that purportedly showed a group of men applying colour on the foreigner, who was visibly uncomfortable.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal had issued a notice to Delhi Police to examine the video and arrest the perpetrators.

"Very disturbing videos getting viral on social media showing sexual harassment with foreign nationals on Holi! I am issuing notice to Delhi Police to examine these videos and arrest the perpetrators! Completely shameful behaviour!" Maliwal tweeted on Friday.

The National Commission for Women, too, took the notice of the video and asked Delhi Police to register an FIR in the matter.

Three arrested in India’s Delhi for harassing Japanese woman on Holi

India’s national capital New Delhi has banned two-wheeler ride service provided by ride-hailing firms Uber, Ola and Rapido, putting millions of jobs in jeopardy.

The decision deals a serious blow to the commuters who primarily rely on bike taxi services as they offer cheap fares compared to car rides.

The Delhi Transport Department issued a public notice on Monday that using private two-wheelers to carry passengers for hire violates Indian law. It said that the ban order will take place with immediate effect.

“It has come to light that that bike taxi service provided by Uber, Ola and Rapido have violated transport rules. Hence, the service has been by the city's transport department,” it said in the notice.

“It has been brought to the notice that two-wheelers having non-transport (private) registration mark/numbers are being used to carry passengers on hire which is purely commercial operation and a violation of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.”

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, private vehicles cannot be used for commercial operations in India.

According to the notice, a fine of Rs. 5,000 (USD 60) will be imposed on the first offence, while for the second offense, a fine of ₹10,000 (USD 120) and imprisonment of up to 1 year can be imposed. Apart from that, the driver can also lose his license for 3 months.

Whereas, the fine for the companies will be much higher. These digital platforms providing bike taxi rides to users will be charged with a fine of Rs 100,000 (USD 1,200) if they facilitate the operation.

It comes just weeks after the Supreme Court banned Rapido services in western state of Maharashtra and declined relief to bike, taxi and auto service provider&nbsp;as the company was operating in the state without a legal license.

According to a report published by Allied Market Research last year&nbsp;, India's motorbike taxi market was valued at $50.5mn, and was expected to reach around $1.5bn by 2030.

India's Home Minister Amit Shah gave out 350 mobile tablets to the personnel of the Special Branch/Delhi Police on the occasion of Delhi Police Raising Day for the police verification process using the app.

Mobile tablets for Delhi Police personnel to expedite passport issuance process

The construction of India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ flagship project, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is underway. On&nbsp;Saturday (January 21), the Union Minister for Road Transport and National Highways, Nitin Gadkari, took to Twitter and shared images of a section of the 1,386 km (861 miles)-long roadway. Once completed it will connect the country’s national capital and its financial capital reducing the total travel time to a mere 12 hours. The project which began in 2018 with the foundation laid in March 2019, should be almost completed by December, later this year, Gadkari announced in 2022.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the expressway is expected to cut at least 850 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and save more than 300 million litres of fuel every year. It will also have multiple animal overpasses making it the first in Asia and second in the world to include such a feature for the uninterrupted movement of wildlife. According to the ministry, over two million trees and shrubs will also be planted along the highway.&nbsp;

The expressway includes two iconic eight-lane tunnels one of which will pass through the Mukundra sanctuary in the Indian state of Rajasthan, while the other four kilometres will be tunnelling through an eco-sensitive zone in Maharashtra’s Matheran. Notably, the highway has also created tens of thousands of jobs for daily workers as well as trained civil engineers.

Last week, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that they will implement the Advance Traffic Management System (ATMS) on national highways and expressways which will include enforcement of speed limits and other regulations for better managing road accidents. Reportedly, the maximum speed on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be 120 km per hour.&nbsp;

In just two days, the national capital's minimum temperature has dropped by nine degrees. Yesterday, the national capital recorded 4.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday and around 10.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday.&nbsp;

Since 2021, this is the lowest temperature recorded in Delhi in January. The base station of the city, Safdarjung observatory, recorded 1.1 degrees Celsius of minimum temperature on January 1, 2021.&nbsp;

In the state of Haryana, the minimum temperature of Hisar was recorded at 0.8 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar city of Punjab witnessed a plunge in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Located close to the Thar desert, Churu recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest temperature recorded across the plains today.

As per the predictions of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense cold wave conditions will continue across the national capital through the next three days.

As per the predictions, minimum temperatures will drop to 2 degrees Celsius in various parts of India's northwest and central provinces in the next two days, after which there will be a marginal increase in temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius from Wednesday.&nbsp;

Visibility was low in parts of north India due to dense fog conditions which further delayed various trains. Senior weather official said that the national capital's day temperature will be normal.

"Cold wave conditions in Delhi will prevail during the night and early morning. So, this cold spell cannot be compared with the previous one," he added.&nbsp;

As per the Centre's air quality panel, CAQM, the air quality in the dark red zones of Delhi will plunge in the upcoming days. Moreover, dense fog, calm winds, and low temperatures will accompany inferior air quality.&nbsp;

CAQM has banned coal's industrial usage and has asked them to swap it for cleaner fuel. But people frequently use fuels like biomass and metallurgical coke in India's capital city.

The list gives out details of the names, residential address and present place of posting of these teachers.

“The details of Kashmiri people have been leaked from the government offices and it's the government which is responsible for this. The government has to give a response on how the details of Kashmiri Pandits have been spread like this. And now they are being threatened,'' said Mehbooba Mufti, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP has termed the leak of Kashmiri pandit migrant employees as a big security concern. They say those responsible for giving out details of Kashmiri Pandits need to be thoroughly investigated and out behind the bars.

Amid the ongoing investigation of the gruesome murder of Shraddha Vikas Walker in India’s capital Delhi, the police found a trail of Instagram chats and bank payments planted by the accused, Aaftab Amin Poonawala which helped them crack the case. The 26-year-old Walker was allegedly strangled to death by Poonawala, who then chopped her body into 35 pieces and disposed them off at night over a period of time.&nbsp;

A further probe into the case shows that a digital trail was reportedly created by the accused to make it seem as though the victim skipped town on her own, which was in line with his previous account to the police. According to the reports, he had initially told them that Shraddha had left the house they shared in Delhi after their fight on May 22 with only her mobile phone.&nbsp;

But following the interrogation, Aaftab later admitted that on May 18, after an argument,&nbsp;he strangled Shraddha and dismembered her body into 35&nbsp;pieces to dispose it off easily without arousing suspicion. He also confessed that after “chopping the body”, he “washed the blood and stuffed the pieces in plastic bags&nbsp;and then kept them in the fridge”.

Reportedly the accused also&nbsp;said that he was “inspired” by the American crime show ‘Dexter’, in which the protagonist is a forensics expert who leads a double life as a serial killer.&nbsp; 
 
How Aaftab’s digital footprint led the police to refute his lies

Notably, it was the slew of aforementioned digital footprints that Poonawala had created that led the police to a major breakthrough in the case, reports ANI. Based on the previous account, the police tracked Walker’s phone including call details and signal location. They found that between May 22 and 26 at least Rs. 54,000 ($ 664) had been transferred from&nbsp; Walker's account to Poonawala's which he reportedly did by using the banking app on her phone, contradicting his statement that he had not been in touch with her since May 22.&nbsp;

When questioned by the police again, the accused reportedly admitted that he had made the transfers since he had access to her passwords and also had been paying her credit card bills to bank so they would not go to her Mumbai address. Reports citing police sources said that the bank transfer location was in the Mehrauli forest area of Delhi. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, the police also found a chat from Shraddha's Instagram account on May 31 and the location of which was also traced to Mehrauli. Therefore, the officers in Vasai, near Maharashtra’s Palghar district where Walker hails from, contacted the Delhi police who detained him again for questioning. He was asked if she had in fact left her phone at their apartment in Delhi after which Aaftab revealed the truth that he had killed her on May 18.&nbsp;

In 2019, Poonawala and Walker met in Mumbai and started dating.&nbsp;However, her family did not approve&nbsp;of their interfaith relationship after which they were in a live-in relationship for three years and moved to Delhi in the first week of May. The victim’s father had come to Delhi after Shraddha’s friend had said that her phone had been switched off for weeks back in September.&nbsp;

Recent developments in the case

So far, the accused has led the police to at least 10 of the nearly 35 pieces of the victim’s body that he had thrown in the forest. Furthermore, a report by Times Now citing the Delhi police claims that the money Aaftab reportedly transferred from Shraddha's account to his own was used to buy a fridge in which he kept the chopped body parts.&nbsp;

Recent reports say that Poonawala’s family is now at an unknown location and is untraceable after they left their house in Mumbai a week ago and Aaftab was there to help during the move. “Aaftab Poonawala was called twice for questioning, once last month and the second time on November 3,” said the Maharashtra police. However, at the time he had said that she left and “they do not live together” anymore. Subsequently, whenever he was called for questioning he never “showed restlessness or nervousness on his face”, said the police.&nbsp;

The police also told ANI that they will request a mental and psychological assessment which will help them verify if he is saying the truth and “understand his mental state” given the multiple discrepancies in his statement. Meanwhile, the Delhi police had also applied for a narco test of the accused the permission for which is yet to be granted by the court.

Media reports suggest that Poonawala and Walker met in Mumbai and started dating soon after, however, her family had not approved of their inter-faith relationship. “The two met on a dating app in Mumbai. However, the police are yet to recover the tool allegedly used to commit the crime. Furthermore, the accused claims that after “chopping the body”, he “washed the blood from them and stuffed them in some plastic bags.” Reportedly, all these plastic bags were then kept in the fridge. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The 28-year-old would then step out of the house around 2 am to dispose off the victim’s body one part at a time in the Mehrauli forest and surrounding areas, said media reports. The police reportedly said that during this time, Poonawala would burn incense sticks to keep the foul smell away and wipe the floor with detergent. &nbsp;

“After almost two three months, he discarded the head and the torso,” said a police officer to the Indian Express. Meanwhile, the accused reportedly had also researched human anatomy, Googled ways to clean human blood from the floor with some chemicals, and disposed off the stained clothes.&nbsp;

The local police have also claimed that the accused disclosed that weeks after the alleged murder he became active on the dating app Bumble through which he had met Walker, and even started dating another girl and had even visited the apartment where Walker had allegedly been killed.&nbsp;

How it all unravelled

The arrest was made after Walker’s father, Vikash Madan Walker, was led to Delhi from Maharashtra’s Palghar district after lodging a missing person complaint in Mumbai. During the interrogation, Aaftab reportedly confessed to the crime and the police had also recovered some bones from their rented apartment in Delhi.&nbsp;

Walker’s father had come to Delhi after Shraddha’s friend had said that her phone had been switched off for weeks back in September, according to media reports. On November 8, Vikas Madan lodged a complaint at the Mehrauli police station after which the police filed a case of murder and got five-day custody of the accused who eventually confessed.&nbsp;

The Delhi police might also write to the US-based dating app seeking details about the accused as well as the women who visited while the victim’s “body was still in the refrigerator,” said a report by ANI.

The police have reportedly recovered at least 12 suspected human body parts allegedly disposed off by Aaftab and have sent them for further analysis.&nbsp;

Delhi's max temperature settles at 30.7 deg C, AQI 'very poor'

Bursting of firecrackers on Diwali in Delhi will attract a jail term of up to six months and a fine of Rs 200, environment minister Gopal Rai said on Wednesday. 
 
Production, storage and sale of firecrackers in the national capital will be punishable with a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and three years' jail under Section 9B of the Explosives Act, the minister told a press conference here. 
 
In September, the city government re-imposed a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers till January 1, including on Diwali, a practice it has been following for the last two years. 
 
Rai said a public awareness campaign — Diye Jalao Patakhe Nahi (light diyas, not firecrackers) — will be launched on October 21. 
 
The Delhi government will light 51,000 diyas at the Central Park in Connaught Place on Friday. 
 
"The purchase and bursting of firecrackers in Delhi will be punishable with a fine of Rs 200 and six months in jail under the Indian Penal Code," the minister said.

The air quality in Delhi and neighbouring areas start worsening in October due to unfavourable meteorological factors such as low temperatures and wind speed, which do not allow dispersion of pollutants. 
 
A cocktail of emissions from firecrackers and stubble burning in neighbouring states further dent the air quality. 
 
"Pollution levels rise around Diwali every year. The major reason is the bursting of firecrackers. Emissions from firecrackers are extremely dangerous especially for kids, women and the elderly." 
 
"Therefore, the Delhi government has imposed a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers this year too. The ban covers online delivery of firecrackers," the minister said. 
 
Rai urged Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav to ensure the ban on firecrackers is strictly implemented in the entire NCR "as the smoke from firecrackers burst in the region impacts the people in Delhi also".

Despite the restrictions, people burst firecrackers till late night in Delhi, Noida, Faridabad and Gurugram. 
 
Fireworks had led to major changes in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Delhi on Diwali night (November 4), according to the DPCC. 
 
Emissions from firecrackers and farm fires had pushed the capital's 24-hour average air quality index for the day after Diwali to 462, the highest in five years.

Six months jail for bursting firecrackers in NCR on Diwali: Delhi environment minister

In terms of average annual population-weighted PM 2.5 exposure, Delhi and Kolkata are the two most polluted cities in the world, according to recent research, 'Air Pollution and Health in Cities', published by the Health Effects Institute's (HEI) State of Global Air Initiative.&nbsp;

Mumbai came in at number 14. There are no other Indian cities in the top 20. Beijing had the largest disease burden associated with a PM 2.5-related illness, with 124 attributable fatalities per 100,000 persons. Kolkata ranked eighth with 99 deaths per 100,000, while Delhi came in sixth with 106 deaths. In the top 20, there were five Chinese cities.

The study encompassed 7,000 cities in total, but only 103 of the most populous ones from six regions were taken into account for the ranking.&nbsp;

No Indian city appeared in the top 20 cities for NO2 exposure, with Shanghai having the worst average exposure. Cities all throughout the world had levels of PM 2.5 and NO2 that were higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The average PM 2.5 exposure in Delhi was 110 micrograms per cubic metre in 2019, which is 22 times higher than the WHO standard of 5 micrograms per cubic metre, according to the research. The average exposure in Kolkata was 84 micrograms per cubic metre.

Moscow in Russia came in second with an average NO2 exposure of 41.6 micrograms per cubic metre (40.2 micrograms per cubic metre). The WHO recommended exposure level for NO2 is 10 micrograms per cubic metre. Delhi and Kolkata most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM 2.5 exposure: Report

The national capital Delhi has registered its first case of monkeypox virus, officials said on Sunday.

According to PTI news agency, which has cited official sources, the man has no history of foreign travel. However, as per sources, the patient attended a party in Himachal Pradesh. The Delhi government has been asked to track the patient's contacts. Meanwhile, more than 10 close contacts of the patient have already been isolated at his West Delhi residence.&nbsp;

The 31-year-old man, who has not been named, is admitted to Maulana Azad Medical College, confirms Health Ministry. The patient was admitted to the hospital with fever and skin lesions.

Notably, this is India’s fourth monkeypox case. The previous three have been reported from southern Kerala state.

The country's very first case was reported on July 14, while the second one was reported on July 14 in Kerala's Kannur district, and the third one was reported on July 22 in Kerala's Malappuram district.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George had said on Friday, "A 35-year-old man contracted the infection and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital where he was admitted for fever after returning from UAE on July 6."

On Saturday, the World Health Organisation declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.

The UN health agency has called on nations to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities.

It informed that more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries and there had been five deaths so far.

India’s capital New Delhi records first monkeypox case; patient has no foreign travel history

A court in Indian capital New Delhi on Friday granted bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair. He was arrested in a case related to his alleged objectionable tweet in 2018 on a Hindu deity. While granting bail the court observed that "the voice of dissent is necessary for a healthy democracy".

The court noted that till Friday (July 15), the police have failed to establish the identity of a said Twitter user who felt offended by the tweet of the accused and based on whose complaint the present case was filed

In spite of the bail however, Zubair will remain in jail as he has been remanded to judicial custody in some FIRs. These FIRs are registered against him by UP Police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Zubair will be sent to the concerned jail in Uttar Pradesh after his release, according to a Tihar jail official in Delhi. The journalist is currently lodged in Tihar jail since July 2.

While granting bail, Additional Sessions Judge Devender Kumar Jangala said Indian democracy and the political parties are open for their criticism and that merely criticism of any political parties is no ground to invoke section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 295A (outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC).

"Undoubtedly free speech is the proper foundation of a democratic society."

Further, the court said that Hindu religion, one of the oldest in the world was most tolerant.

Six separate FIRs have been lodged against Zubair in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Hathras districts in UP.

The court has directed Zubair to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of like amount. He has been directed not to leave the country without prior permission from the court. The journalist was also ordered to ensure that his tweet or retweet, or any material on social media content is not even touching boundaries of the offence punishable under Section 153A and 295A of IPC.

The court said that there was no need for any custodial interrogation and the alleged act would come into the category of offence only when it is done with a guilty intention.

Dr Glossi Sabbarwal, daughter-in-law of the family points toward a picture and says this picture is from 1920, from the time Lala Jeevanmal, the late patriarch of the family started this hospital in Jalalpur city of Pakistan. He was inspired by Gandhiji who said that the future of this country would depend upon the quality of education and healthcare services. That is when Lala Jeevanmal decided to make all four of his sons doctors. After independence, the family shifted to Delhi, and the tradition continued.

This is when the legacy of making everyone in the family doctor started. “This has been going on for the past 102 years. But this is not an easy job, as one of the sons of the family started studying for a management degree, but the grandmother‘s emotional appeal and the family‘s atmosphere compelled the son to leave management studies and pursue the medical profession. He is a successful surgeon today,” says Ankush Sabbarwal.

This Jeewanmal Hospital in Delhi has a system of not returning any patients just because they do not have money. Two members of their family, who were doctors, died of coronavirus last year. Dr Vinay says it is very difficult to convince the next generation to get into this profession that demands so much hard work and sacrifice.

It is expected that the daughters-in-law of the family will be doctors too and will join the family hospital.
