Kohli & Co. had the most disappointing starts of all in the series with Lord's Test's Man-of-the-Match KL Rahul out for a duck. While Rahul fell in the first over itself, India were soon reduced to 21-3 as James Anderson's regular strikes severely dented India's start. Despite a 35-run stand between Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, India went to the lunch break being reduced to 56-4.
“He (Kohli) was right. I said to him “obviously not.” I’ve faced a lot of short-pitched bowling. It is no secret I don’t play the bouncer very well. Mitchell Johnson steaming in around the wicket in Perth was pretty tasty, for example," he added.

“But the first ball I faced I didn’t see it at all. The first I knew of it was when it hit me on the head. Bumrah had obviously picked up his pace and from then on I just wanted to get through it unscathed and stay at the crease for Joe," he added.

"And this is what gives us hope from a player. If you get a player who can guarantee score 80 runs, then in a five-Test series, he would end up with 400-450 runs. What else does a captain need? Yes, he would be disappointed not scoring a century, but getting a century at Lords isn’t everything," Gavaskar, who never scored an international century at Lord's, mentioned.

"You score a century at Trent Bridge, or Leeds… if you score a century for India in whichever part of the world, that is what is important. And the way he is batting, the time he has and the position in which he gets himself in, it feels as if a century is just around the corner."

During the match, several heated arguments between both teams included players like Virat Kohli, James Anderson, Mark Wood, Jaspreet Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj took place. Umpires were constantly seen calming several situations down during the match.

However, former England batsman Nick Compton is not impressed with the language Virat Kohli uses. In an interview with Sportskeeda, Compton said that Kohli’s way is to get very abusive.

"I do agree (others do it as well). (James) Anderson's got his ways. It's not just Kohli, I am not saying that. But his language is quite excessive. Anderson will do things in a different way. Kohli’s way is to get very abusive. He has got a good array of swear words that he uses. We don’t want to throw stones on this player and that player, otherwise we get into a big argument," Compton told SportsKeeda.

“Indian players must give it back (to England). I am not saying they shouldn’t be aggressive. I think (Ravindra) Jadeja has got that in him. I think that you do get a good mixture within the team. There are different ways to being aggressive. Kohli can probably do it in a more intelligent way, without having these abusive fights. Sometimes the best way is to say nothing and go out there and get a hundred," he added.

“I think we should let it go on. We need some theatre and entertainment. We need characters in the game, Kohli is a character. He brings a lot to cricket. I am a real admirer of him as a player. His leadership is sometimes overemotional. But I think he has brought a lot to cricket. It is important that characters are brought in. You don’t want the match referee stepping in every time everyone says something. Otherwise, the game just becomes over-governed. It becomes like naughty school children in the playground. These are adults, these are international professional cricketers.

"A bit of banter, there's definitely a place to use that. It just needs to be done in the right way. Kohli's got to realise that he is an inspiration to other young players. Using foul-mouthed language, I don't think it is necessary," he signed off.

Earlier, Compton had tweeted that 'Kohli is the most fouled mouthed individual'.

In a tweet, that was later deleted, Compton said: "Isn't Kohli the most foul mouthed individual. I'll Never forget the barrage of abuse I received in 2012 when the swearing stunned me to the point that he did himself a serious disservice. It highlights what a level headed and grounded man Root, Tendulkar, Williamson et al are".

"I did not actually notice what happened but nothing was said by the public," he said. He said that the plan of the fast bowlers was to be reliable and bowl in one region. He additionally underlined the significance of four quick bowlers in these conditions. "It was important because we have taken three wickets at the start and our fast bowlers were effective and bowling consistently in one area," he said. "The role of fast bowlers is important in England because when you come to England, you want to try things, but our plan here was to be consistent and bowl at one place," he added.

Cricket: Mark Wood and Sam Curran put England in box seat against India

England captain Joe Root continued his dream run with an artistic 22nd hundred to ensure a morale-boosting first-innings lead as the second Test against India is poised for an interesting finish in the next couple of days.

Root (180 not out), who scored his second successive hundred of this series, took England from a position of weakness to strength with the first innings total of 391 after India scored 364 in their first essay.

More than the quantum of lead which stands at 27 currently, it is the psychological advantage that England gained after a poor first day which will put them in good stead as their bowlers would go flat out to dismiss the low on confidence Indian middle-order cheaply on the fourth day.

En route his 321-ball knock, Root became the first England captain to hit five hundreds in a season and also complete a personal milestone of 9000 Test runs while clinically annihilating the Indian attack which has till now failed to crack the 'Root Code'. If these records were not enough, he is also now the first English captain with six 150 plus scores, a testimony to his knack of hitting 'Daddy Hundreds'. His sequence of scores now reads 64, 109, 180* in this series.

What makes him more special is the fact that he had made an attack, which otherwise gave a decent account of themselves, looks pedestrian with his counter-punches that included 18 boundaries. Mohammed Siraj (30-7-94-4) had the most number of wickets but bowled too many boundary balls in that first session along with Mohammed Shami (26-3-94-2), who would like to forget this innings in a hurry.

Old workhorse Ishant Sharma (24-4-69-3) once again did his part but at times looked tired in his later spells although the in-cutter that cleaned up Jos Buttler (23) would be any pacer's dream.

But England batting was all about Root and how he controlled the narrative with superb technique and the sublime range of strokes on the off-side. Unlike India's tour of 2018, Root has now a reduced backfoot trigger movement and the front-foot rather than going across the off-stump moves a shade towards middle-stump.

This slight tweak gives more chance of playing the drives through the off-side. Jonny Bairstow (57 off 107 balls) did help him with a 121 run stand for the fourth wicket as the first session was a virtual nightmare for Indian bowlers.

Root's gameplan actually upset India's strategy as the first hour on third morning produced 54 runs with a flurry off boundaries coming off Siraj and Shami. Kohli's decision to not start with Ishant or Bumrah first-up didn't help the cause as runs leaked easily in the form of cover and square drives and along with the whip through mid-wicket region.

It did help that the pitch was best for batting on the third day and Root wasn't going to let the chance of making merry go abegging on a sunny Saturday.

As many as 97 and 98 runs were scored in first two sessions, signalling the plight of the Indian bowling attack. Root started the first session with a square drive off Siraj to reach his third successive fifty plus score in the series.

After a wicketless first session, India did enjoy some good moments when Siraj got Bairstow with a bumper and Ishant bowled Buttler but Moeen Ali was again given loose balls on platter as England closed in on the lead.

From 341 for 5, there was another lower-order slump which had England at 358 for 8 before Root played a flick off Siraj to give his team the lead. And as if to celebrate, he played a reverse ramp shot off Siraj and then smote over mid-wicket to increase India's miseries.

Team India opener KL Rahul has conceded that consistent downpour and climate-related breaks during the first Test in Nottingham was a challenge to Team India's mission to stay focused.

“It was a challenging pitch, and weather conditions being as they were, going in and going out weren't easy for us to get our focus back. The switch on and switch off was very challenging. So it was great to see that we held our focus, and in the field, I think, our energy was great," he said.

On an individual level, the Nottingham Test was huge for KL Rahul. Playing in his first Test in almost two years, the 29-year-old got the chance and scored an unflinching 84 in the first innings and scored 26 in the subsequent innings.

“From the last 2-3 series, I have been sitting outside. The team was doing really well, and I was very happy to be a part of the team and seeing how we were beating teams in India and then Australia," he said

"So it was great to be part of it, but also very frustrating that opportunities weren’t coming. It was only practise, practise and practise, and as a player, you want to be in the middle and want to challenge yourself, so I kept waiting for my opportunity, so I am very happy that it came in England,” he added.

“I was just looking forward to it, and I am happy that opportunity came, and in the first match, and I gave a good contribution for the team,” he concluded.

KL Rahul said the work in preparing the players had put throughout the last month-and-a-half, post the World Test Championship final, paid off in the Nottingham Test against England, which finished in a draw after downpour washed away what vowed to be an intriguing fifth day.
