India opener KL Rahul soldiered to an unbeaten 77 to help the tourists eclipse England`s first innings total of 183 and reach 191-5 on day three of the opening test on Friday.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was batting on 27 having raised 46 runs with Rahul for the sixth wicket in the low-scoring contest at Trent Bridge.

Once India resumed on 125-4, only 11 balls could be bowled before rain forced the players off the field.

When they returned, Rishabh Pant produced an entertaining cameo before becoming Ollie Robinson`s second victim in the match.

Pant first hit the pacer for a streaky boundary and followed it up with a top-edged six over fine leg before hitting the next delivery to Jonny Bairstow to depart for 25 off 20 balls.

Playing his first test in nearly two years, Rahul looked assured at the other end and took three off James Anderson to put India ahead in the first match of the five-test series.

Rahul, who was chosen to open the innings in the absence of injured openers Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal, hit 11 boundaries looking determined to capitalise on the opportunity.

The match also marks the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle.

"Bairstow was going well, he was poised to score a fifty so getting him out at that period was crucial. As soon as we got him, wickets started tumbling," he added.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been an absolute superstar for the Men in Blue. His records and stats are mind-boggling in the world of cricket. However, the prolific batsman has gone through some of the darkest phases in his career.&nbsp;

IN PICS|&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/photos/from-virat-kohli-to-simone-biles-sports-icon-who-battled-with-mental-health-issues-tokyo-olympics-402532" hreflang="en">From Virat Kohli to Simone Biles: Sports icons who battled with mental health issues</a>

One such phase was the forgettable series of England in the year 2014 when the Indian batsman scored just 134 runs from four Tests and averaged just over 13 with scores of 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0, 7, 6 and 20. However, he bounced back in form during the tour of Australia, later that year when he scored 692 runs in four Tests.&nbsp;

"To be honest before that Australia tour, I was treating every foreign tour like, more like an engineering exam, that I have to pass somehow and I have to show people that I can play at this level," Kohli told Dinesh Karthik in an interaction on Sky Sports.

"There I realised that once you are down and out, there was hardly anyone who came to help me, there was hardly anyone who was looking towards me and saying listen let’s work together and you know try to get your game up to speed, everyone was just going after me left, right and centre. So, I was like I am playing to prove these people long, for what, I have got nothing to do with them, they literally have nothing to contribute in my life."

"So, I went back home, I was down for quite a bit, the great thing that happened at that stage was, I realised who is with me, who’s not, things were filtered to an extent that I just got so relaxed when I went back home, I was like okay. I have hit a rock bottom now, no one believes in me, everyone thinks I should not be playing Test cricket, so what can I do, I can just work hard as I can," Kohli elaborated.

He recalled his pep talk with Sachin Tendulkar and how his advice helped him change his play.&nbsp;

"I went into a bubble, I went to Bombay as well, I called Sachin Tendulkar, I asked for his help, I said I want to get my game right, I want to understand what it is like to score runs at this level, my mindset was simple. I went back home and I told myself, listen you can’t play Test cricket to show people that you can play in England, Australia and not get out. If you don’t score it is not a point, you play this game to make your team win. So my mindset was I am going to go to Australia and how I am going to score runs against these guys.

"I wasn’t going out there to survive, and from the time I got back home till the Australia tour, I promise you I was visualizing everyday, when I was working out in the gym, that I am hitting Mitchell Johnson, I am hitting these guys all over the park. Those things came to life eventually because I convinced myself to an extent, when I went there I was absolutely fearless and things just started flowing."

Cricket - 'Hit a rock bottom': Virat Kohli recalls forgettable 2014 England series

Former England cricketer Andrew Strauss featured England's batting misery after a collapse in the last session of Day 1 of the first Test at Trent Bridge.&nbsp;

Choosing to bat first, the hosts were all out for 183 runs. Indian pacers bowled really well to keep the English batting under 200. Jasprit Bumrah got back with four wickets while Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur with two wickets, and Mohammed Siraj also contributed one wicket.&nbsp;

Andrew Strauss said that it was terrible to see England capitulate to the pressure factor.&nbsp;

"I thought that Indian bowlers were outstanding today. Hunted in packs and they were very accurate, they built pressure on England batsmen. It's very hard not to feel dejected if you are an England fan right now," he said.

"Those issues we have had about batting come right to the surface on Day 1 of the series. There's still a lot of cricket obviously to be played in this Test match but the scars are very wide open now," he added.

England top-order yet again neglected to get the work done. While Rory Burns was out for a duck in the first over, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley failed to convert over the beginnings.&nbsp;

Joe Root once again rescued his side with a splendid half-century. However, he needed help from the opposite end with Dan Lawrence and Jos Buttler getting out for ducks.&nbsp;

"It is a recurring thing. We have seen a lot of this over the last 18 months. What i struggle with is these batsmen got in and then got out," he said.&nbsp;

"You look at Sibley, who battled hard for 18, you look at Crawley who got 27, you look at Bairstow who got 29. They got out and then new batsmen come in and that gives Indian bowlers something to work with," he added.

"If you get in go big and England haven't done that for a long time now and yet again it falls on Joe Root to hold the team together. When you are a captain you don't wanna have to be forced to be you all the time," he concluded

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra feels if opening batsman Rohit Sharma has a good England tour, the chances of India winning the series against the Three Lions would increase.

India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning Wednesday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.

Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill was ruled out earlier, and Nehra believes that KL Rahul should be given a go as the opening partner to Rohit Sharma.

"The team management earlier said that we are looking at KL Rahul in the middle order. But see, I have seen KL Rahul as an opener in white-ball format. Before Hanuma Vihari, why not KL Rahul? Although I already feel that we have too many people floating around the opening slot, I hope Rohit plays all Tests. If I had to take chance, I would rather go in with KL Rahul as an opener," said Nehra during a virtual press conference organised by a media outlet.&nbsp;

"I really hope Rohit Sharma has a good England tour. If he has a good tour, then we as a team, our chances will be much better. If you can start well, it will keep a strong foundation," he added.

When asked whether Mohammed Siraj should be given a go in the first Test, Nehra said: "Yes, Mohammed Siraj is waiting in the wings but he has to wait for his turn. Everybody knows that Siraj is a very skillful bowler but here you are talking about a guy like Jasprit Bumrah who has done really well in the last five-six years since his arrival. You have to start with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma."

"If you want a fourth fast bowler, we are not there, the captain, coach, and team management can take a call based on who has been bowling well. Whether you want to go with Umesh Yadav or you want to play Siraj. But if you are playing three seamers then you will start with Bumrah, Shami, and Ishant unless there is an injury to any of them," he added.

Nehra also said that he does not agree with the concept that every bowler needs to be able to swing the ball in England to get success. "I don`t agree that you need only swing bowlers in England. Look at somebody like Stuart Broad. Even Jofra Archer is not a swing bowler. But they are England`s main weapons, so a lot depends on how you bowl and it`s not like Bumrah or Shami can`t swing the ball or they need one particular surface to achieve results," said Nehra.

Answering a question of whether India has the best possible opportunity to defeat England in England with Ben Stokes opting out of the series, Nehra said: "See, you cannot say this is the best opportunity. In 2007, India won 1-0 when Rahul Dravid was the captain, but you should not think of it like a now or never situation. England has resources, new players are coming in and they are going through a transition. Ben Stokes is not there, but Buttler is there. You are talking about a team sport, Stokes is an all-rounder, but that can happen to any team. India has to play really well to defeat England in England."

When asked what sort of combination India should opt for in the series against England, Nehra said: "It all depends on the surface you are playing. When you talk about three-four seamers, these discussions just happen when you are playing in England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand. There is more life on the pitches, I agree but it is not like there is swing available on every pitch you play."

“I’ll answer your second question first, it takes 'relentless madness and the pursuit of excellence' every day on a series of five tests, to tell you that I want to do the hard work and that I want to find myself in tough situations every test match every day," he said.

England's cricket tour of Bangladesh for September-October has been postponed until 2023, the two countries said Tuesday as both struggled with the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The nations' cricket boards said they had "mutually decided" to delay the three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

The postponement makes it possible for players from both teams to take part in the Indian Premier League, which resumes in the United Arab Emirates on September 19.

England are expected to play Pakistan in two T20 matches in October, with the T20 World Cup starting on October 17 in the UAE.

"With all the challenges of Covid and a packed cricket calendar, both boards agreed that the best approach was to reschedule the tour," said an English board official.&nbsp;

The nations' cricket boards said they had "mutually decided" to delay the three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals. The postponement makes it possible for players from both teams to take part in the Indian Premier League, which resumes in the United Arab Emirates on September 19. The cash-rich IPL was suspended in May as India was hit by a massive Covid wave and the pandemic affected cricket tours around the world. England are expected to play Pakistan in two T20 matches in October, with the T20 World Cup starting on October 17 in the UAE. "With all the challenges of Covid and a packed cricket calendar, both boards agreed that the best approach was to reschedule the tour," said an English board official. Cricket teams around the world are facing the pressure of intense scheduling and Covid disruptions. England star Ben Stokes' decision to take an indefinite break from cricket because of mental health concerns has, in part, been blamed on a packed tour schedule. England will go to Bangladesh in the first two weeks of March 2023 to play the one-day games and T20s in Dhaka and Chittagong.

In the digital world, we see thousands of hilarious memes on an everyday basis, but only a few of them manage to leave a lasting impression. One such was a cricket-related meme, where an angry fan's reaction — perfectly depicted the mood of a World Cup match between Pakistan and Australia, went viral on social media.&nbsp;

Sarim Akhtar, probably not known by his name, is an extremely popular face in the meme world. His epic reaction when Pakistan's Asif Ali had dropped a catch off bowler Wahab Riaz against Australia went viral during the ICC World Cup 2019. Moments after the missed chance during the game, Akhtar was seen standing with hands on his waist and a disappointed look on his face. The particular footage was aired repeatedly.&nbsp;

Bangladesh and Australia will play a five-match T20I series in Dhaka starting on August 3. Ahead of the series they suffered a blow after it was discovered that Mushfiqur Rahim won't be a part of the forthcoming T20I series against the Australian side.

Mushfiqur Rahim's parents had contracted coronavirus and the Bangladesh cricketer has&nbsp;flown back home. Presently, Rahim has not been permitted reemergence into the air pocket.

South African legend Dale Steyn trusts Mohammed Siraj has the right demeanor and abilities to prevail in England, picking the Indian pacer to have a fruitful Test profession.&nbsp;

In a section for ESPNCricinfo, Dale Steyn dissected the Indian pace attack. Commending Mohammed Siraj, the South African wrote:&nbsp;

“I think he brings a good attitude to the game. That’s another thing we tend to forget when you’re playing in English conditions. It’s not just about where you put the ball but also the attitude you bring, getting in people’s faces, making them play shots they don’t particularly want to play."

"I think Siraj is somebody who can do that. I saw parts of that little bit of fight when he played in Australia and I immediately knew he's going to have a good Test career. Don't forget about the attitude of a fast bowler too," he added

Mohammed Siraj has played five Tests for India, asserting 16 wickets at an average of 28.25. He assumed a vital part in India's successes downunder.

Dale Steyn figures India would have savored playing the pacer in the World Test Championship final. However, he concurred that that would have come at the expense of another bowler or a bowler who could bat better.&nbsp;

"Maybe that's something India would have really relished in the World Test Championship final, but it would have come with the sacrifice of some more runs." he wrote.

India proceeded with Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami in the WTC final, which they lost to the New Zealand side.

A string of injuries have plagued Team India once again, but this time against England. Several players like opener Shubman Gill, all-rounder Washington Sundar and pacer Avesh Khan have been ruled out of the series after sustaining injuries.&nbsp;

Even the Indian team's vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is being monitored after missing the 3-day warm-up match.&nbsp;

However, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq reacted to the problem and pointed out Team India's talented bench strength. He talked about the young Indian team's performance against Australia.&nbsp;

Speaking in his latest YouTube video, Inzamam said India have an 'excellent bench strength.'

“Team India are facing some injury issues in England. Sundar and Gill are unfit. Virat Kohli has a stiff back but he is trying his best to be fit for the first Test. Ajinkya Rahane also has a hamstring issue. The good thing though is that India have excellent bench strength so they should not face that much difficulty even if some of their key players are injured,” said Inzamam.

“Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw, who were doing well in Sri Lanka, will now fly to England. I don’t think Team India will be too worried over injuries. They faced a similar situation in Australia as well but they did not panic at all. The youngsters rose to the occasion and displayed great maturity as if they had been playing for many years. So, bench strength really matters a lot. They can pull you out of trouble and I give a lot of credit to Rahul Dravid for the same. In Sri Lanka as well, India won the ODIs and are 1-0 up in the T20Is as well.”

There is some good news in store for India's Test team, currently training in Durham as vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is showing signs of recovery from the hamstring niggle and has started practising ahead of the first Test against England starting in Nottingham from August 4.

Rahane didn't play India's first-class game against Select County XI because of a "mild swelling around his left upper hamstring." He was administered an injection to reduce the swelling and the pain associated with the injury.

It was learnt that Rahane has returned to practice on the day and apart from fielding and physical training sessions, he also had a proper net session at the Riverside Ground of Durham County.

While Suryakumar Yadav is being flown in alongside Prithvi Shaw as a middle-order cover but Rahane's recovery is a good sign as the Indian vice-captain looks a likely starter in Nottingham.

In any case, Shaw and Surya is unlikely to reach Nottingham before the start of the first Test as they will have to undergo hard quarantine before being merged into the bio-bubble.

In any case, if Rahane happened to miss out, KL Rahul will be the first-choice replacement in the middle-order. Mayank Agarwal is set to reclaim his opener's slot alongside Rohit Sharma while Mohammed Siraj is also in the mix to start against England.

Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja questioned the Sri Lankan team after Team India beat the hosts by 38 runs on Sunday in Colombo.&nbsp;

The Lankans began the chase of 165 runs on a high note, however, India's lethal bowling attack got the better of the hosts.&nbsp;

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 4 wickets off 22 runs spell dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup. In his latest YouTube video, Raja questioned the planning and approach of Dasun Shanaka-led side while chasing a 166-run target.&nbsp;

“When India scored 160-odd, they would have thought of winning this because you can expect Sri Lanka to commit mistakes frequently. To chase a target like this, you needed one or two partnerships. At least one batsman should have scored 70-odd runs and you could have crossed the line. But there was no strategy from this Sri Lankan team.

“If you can't chase 160 at home, where will you? And losing a game shatters the confidence of the team. To bring new players into a losing environment is dangerous. An unhappy environment in the dressing room squeezes your confidence and fearlessness. So, it is important for Sri Lanka to start preparing wickets that challenge India,” Ramiz said.

“This could be a tough series for Sri Lanka. They need to do something now. Especially, the middle-order needs to score runs. Similarly, while bowling, you cannot bowl well in patches. You need to be consistent. Spin did work for them but there was no consistency and succumbed to pressure. There's no point in playing at home if you can’t score 160,” Raja concluded.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar said that the batsmen of today's generation are "fortunate" as they haven't faced some of the legendary bowlers like Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and himself. During an interview with an India-based media house, the 45-year-old former fast bowler spoke about how the game of cricket has deteriorated over the past few years. He said that cricket has "not evolved", only the shots have "evolved". Akhtar said, "The quality of the game has deteriorated in the last 10 years. The deterioration has happened."&nbsp;

Speaking further, the Rawalpindi Express also pointed on the viewership and highlighted the issue of a dip in viewership. There are some instances when the viewership is high for some big matches but the trend is inconsistent. Akhtar also tried to establish the reason saying that "characters of the game have gone".&nbsp;

"The viewership of the game has not increased but it has come down because the characters of the game have gone. People are saying there's more viewership, but how is there more viewership? There's no viewership for Test matches. 600 million might have watched the Champions Trophy match, but that was a one-off," he said.&nbsp;

Akhtar on Sachin vs Virat debate

Akhtar weighed in on the highly debated topic in the cricketing world, which is, who is better — Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli? While commenting on the same, Akhtar said, "Give Sachin Tendulkar credit and stop comparing him to Virat Kohli." Shoaib Akhtar, who played against the Master Blaster on many occasions said, "He [Virat] did not play the era of Sachin Tendulkar, which is like the single era of 50 overs, and then the reverse swing starts literally after 10 overs. Face that with Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and the spin of Shane Warne".&nbsp;

Bangladesh are undergoing a 10-day quarantine in Dhaka ahead of the five-match series, due to be held August&nbsp;3 to 9.

However, Cricket Australia said on Thursday, the series has come under doubt after their second one-day international against West Indies was suspended minutes before the start following a COVID-19 case among the West Indies staff.

Bangladesh Cricket Board's cricket operations chairman Akram Khan said Mushfiqur opted out of their ongoing series in Zimbabwe to be with his parents.

"Mushfiqur wanted to play the (Australia) series but he missed the quarantine by a couple of days," ESPNcricinfo news site quoted Akram as saying.

"His parents are sick, so he had to leave the Zimbabwe tour. But the (10-day) quarantine is part of our agreement with Cricket Australia, so we couldn't include him.

"They didn't agree to Mushfiqur entering quarantine two days after it began. It is disappointing but one can't do much about these things."
