India to play England, Australia: Complete schedule of T20 World Cup 2021 warm-up matches

Cricket Australia is all set to officially postpone the one-off Test Afghanistan later this week."We`ve made our position very clear that we support cricket as a sport for both women and men," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley as saying.

"We`ve been trying to get clarity on what the situation is. It`s obviously a difficult, complex, and challenging situation. It`s most likely we`ll postpone the Hobart Test match until such time that there is greater clarity, and we`ll be making some announcements in the coming days," he added.

Earlier, Cricket Australia (CA) had said that the planned men`s Test match against Afghanistan in November would not go ahead if the country does not support women`s cricket following the Taliban takeover.

"Driving the growth of women`s cricket globally is incredibly important to Cricket Australia. Our vision for cricket is that it is a sport for all and we support the game unequivocally for women at every level," Cricket Australia said in its official statement.

"If recent media reports that women`s cricket will not be supported in Afghanistan are substantiated, Cricket Australia would have no alternative but to not host Afghanistan for the proposed Test Match due to be played in Hobart," it added.

On Sunday, the International Cricket Council`s (ICC) Acting CEO Geoff Allardice had said that the apex cricket body is keeping a table on change of regime in Afghanistan, however, he confirmed that Afghanistan will indeed take part in the T20 World Cup.

"Yes, when the change of regime took place in Afghanistan in August, we have been in regular contact with their cricket board, our primary involvement is to support cricket in that country through the member board, we have said all along that we are waiting to see how things unfold under the different regime in that country," said Allardice.

"They are a full member of the ICC and their team is preparing for the T20 World Cup. In terms of their preparation for the event, it is proceeding as planned," he added. (ANI)

Australia likely to postpone Afghanistan Test: Report

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan once again expressed his disappointment over New Zealand and England's decision to pull out of their respective tours of Pakistan. New Zealand were in Pakistan for a limited-overs series but decided to cancel the series ahead of the first ODI between the two sides in Rawalpindi. England, on the other hand, refused to send their teams for the tour.

While expressing his disappointment over England's decision to snub their tour of Pakistan, the Pakistan Prime Minister said money has become a big player now and plays a major role in influencing the decisions of the cricket boards around the world.

Khan insisted that Indian controls world cricket now as the International Cricket Council (ICC) receives the majority of its funding from the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian markets. The Pakistan PM said no country can dare to pull out of their commitments against India, unlike Pakistan.

“England let itself down. I think that there is still this feeling in England that they do a great favour to play with countries like Pakistan. One of the reasons is that, obviously, the money," Khan was quoted as saying in an interview with the Middle East Eye.

“Money is a big player now. For the players, as well as for the cricket boards. The money lies in India, so basically, India controls world cricket now. I mean, they do, whatever they say goes. No one would dare do that to India because they know that the sums involved, India can sort of produce much more money,” he added.

New Zealand had pulled out of their tour of Pakitsan on the day of the first ODI against the hosts in Rawalpindi after receiving a 'security threat alert'. Days after New Zealand's decision, the England Cricket Board (ECB) also announced that the teams will not travel to Pakistan due to "increasing concerns about travelling to the region".

Recently, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chief Ramiz Raja had stated that cricket in the country can collapse if the Indian government wants. Raja had explained how PCB receives 50 per cent of its budget from ICC, which is dependent on the BCCI for funding.

"The ICC is a politicised body divided between the Asian and Western blocs and 90 per cent of its revenues are generated from India. It is frightening," the PCB chief had said.

"In a way, India's business houses are running Pakistan cricket and if tomorrow the Indian PM decides he will not allow any funding to Pakistan, this cricket board can collapse," he added.

India controls world cricket now: Imran Khan after New Zealand, England pull out of Pakistan tour

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has over the years provided several budding cricketers across India a platform to rub shoulders with the best in the world and showcase their talent and skills at the highest level. It remains a dream for many to bag an elusive IPL contract and ply their trade in one of the best T20 leagues in the world. However, not many get to live the dream of playing in the IPL or becoming a part of a top franchise in the league.

With thousands of young cricketers trying to make a name for themselves in India's vast and sophisticated domestic circuit, it often becomes difficult to spot talent at the grassroots level and nurture them properly. There have been numerous success stories in the IPL where players spotted at the local level by scouts have gone on to become heroes for their respective franchises and even represented team India at the highest level.

The likes of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and several others were not a big name in the Indian domestic circuit but were spotted by the scouts at the right time and were offered the platform to shine. To unearth more such stars and help them bridge the gap between the domestic circuit and the IPL, Red Bull has launched the Red Bull Speedster program which aims to find India's best fast bowling talents.

The Speedster program gives youngsters across the country a chance to showcase their talent and skills in qualifying rounds. Those who make it to the final go up against each other and the winner finally gets a chance to train with the Rajasthan Royals. The bowlers are judged based on raw pace, skills and accuracy. Three bowlers have so far been selected as net bowlers for the Royals after coming through the Red Bull Speedster program.

The three bowlers - Mohammad Shareem, Prateek Kumar and Preet Kanwar have been training with Rajasthan Royals as net bowlers and have been bowling against some of the best batsmen in the world including the likes of skipper Sanju Samson, Liam Livingstone and Evin Lewis among others.

Sharim and Pratik were selected at the 2020 Speedster and trained at RR's camp for three months before being selected as net bowlers for IPL 2021. Preet was selected earlier this year and made it as a net bowler for the UAE leg of the IPL 2021.

Pratik, who hails from the legendary MS Dhoni's hometown Ranchi, said it was a dream come true moment for him when he was selected as a net bowler for the Royals. Having bowled at some of the top batsmen in the RR nets, Pratik hopes to play in the IPL as a full-time player one day.

"It's such an honour that everyone desires for. I thank Red Bull Speedster contest for making my dream come true. A lifetime opportunity to experience the team atmosphere of such a big franchise like Rajasthan Royals," Pratik told WION.

"Of course, it's a big yes. Every player in India wants to have an opportunity to play IPL, as it's a huge opportunity for a youngster to leave his impact on cricketing world. A franchise such as RR always cherish the young talent in India. Hope to get an opportunity in domestic session, so that I can make it to the team one day," he added, when asked if he would like to represent RR in the IPL in future.

Sharim, who hails from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, found out about the Speedster challenge through a friend and it has since proved to be a game-changer for him. The talented youngster has already bowled at the likes of Ben Stokes, Samson and Chris Morris among others and is focused on learning as much as he can from his time with the franchise.

"A friend told me about this. Red Bull Speedster has been a game-changer for me. Very helpful. Experience to train and practice with top international players too," Sharim told WION.

"I have bowled to every player of RR. Star players like Liam Livingston, Evin Lewis, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Chris Morris, Glenn Philip etc," he added on his experience as a net bowler with RR.

As the young pace bowlers from small cities of India work hard towards their dream of playing in the IPL, former India cricketer Munaf Patel deserves the credit for spotting them at the right time and taking them under his wings. Munaf is the chief selector during the city-level qualifiers of the Speedster and is also working closely with the RR team management to look after the growth of the selected pacers.

The 2011 World Cup-winner with MS Dhoni-led India, believes the Speedster program can prove to be a game-changer for Indian cricket as far as fast bowling is concerned as it can help in identifying talent which often goes unnoticed.

"The platform provided by programs such as these can be a huge game-changer for the future of our country's cricket where fast bowling is concerned. This is a very good opportunity for the young ones who would otherwise go undiscovered," said Munaf, who played 13 Tests and 70 ODIs for India.

Munaf is hopeful of developing some future stars for the Indian cricket team and the Rajasthan Royals with the help of the Speedster program which not only identifies talent but also ensured they are nurtured properly.

"One might have talent but most of it does not see the light of the day just because of lack of opportunities. This initiative does not just stop at scouting talent but goes on to groom them and ensure they find just place in the world of cricket which is extremely important," said Munaf.

"I am positive that we will soon see a battery of bowlers in blue jersey who have come through Red Bull Speedster program," he added.

As we head towards the business end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, the countdown for ICC T20 World Cup 2021 has also begun. The T20 World Cup was originally scheduled to be played in India last year but had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The seventh edition of the showpiece event is all set to get underway from October 17 in UAE and Oman.

The T20 World Cup will mark its return after a gap of five years as the last edition of the tournament was played in 2016 with West Indies clinching the elusive title. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made some fresh changes in the playing conditions for the semi-final and the final of the T20 World Cup this year. The international body has introduced new Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) rules for the upcoming edition.

ICC released the playing conditions for T20 World Cup earlier this week and as per a report in ESPN Cricinfo, the international body has decided to increase the minimum number of overs for DLS usage in the semi-final and final of the T20 World Cup 2021.

As per the existing rules related to the DLS method, in case of a delay or a rain-affected game, each team needs to bat for a minimum of five overs for the result to be decided in a T20I game. However, in the semi-final and the final of the T20 World Cup 2021, each team will have to bat for a minimum of ten overs for the result to be calculated via the DLS method.

The change has been brought into effect, in line with the norm at the Women's T20 World Cup in Australia last year where England were eliminated after their semi-final against India was washed out due to rain and there was no reserve day.

Apart from the change in the DLS rules, ICC is also set to introduce Decision Review System (DRS) for the first time in the men's T20 World Cup. The Decision Review System was not in existence when the last edition of the T20 World Cup was played in 2016 which is the reason behind the delay in the introduction of the technology in the showpiece events.

Each team will be awarded two reviews per innings, as per the existing rules of the ICC. The T20 World Cup 2021 will get underway from October 17, just a couple of days after the conclusion of IPL 2021 in the UAE. ICC on Sunday (October 10) also announced USD 1.6 million prize money for the winner of the tournament.

Also Read: ICC announce USD 1.6 million prize money for winner of T20 World Cup 2021 Apart from the change in the DLS rules, ICC is also set to introduce Decision Review System (DRS) for the first time in the men's T20 World Cup.

The importance of gender-neutral terminology can be understood better by highlighting the discrimination faced by a particular gender due to an established structure of how some terms in a particular language are spoken and written.

In English for example, terms that defines gender-specific job titles, such as, policeman, chairman, stewardess, salesman, fireman are used widely and very commonly. But attempts are being made for a gender-inclusive language and words like - police officer, chair, flight attendant, salesperson firefighter are recommended to be applied to any type of communication, whether it is oral or written.

When it comes to sport, especially cricket, the issue related to terminology persists, however, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is making efforts to establish a balance and boost women's cricket.

Recently, ICC announced that the term "batter" will replace "batsman" in all playing conditions from the Men's T20 World Cup 2021. The world cricket governing body stated that over the past four years, it has been moving away from the word batsman and batter being implemented regularly in commentary and across the organisation's channels.

In September, the Marylebone Cricket Club also announced that it would be replacing the word 'batsman' with 'batter' in the Laws of Cricket. Former Australia star Lisa Sthalekar said that the move to 'batter' is a simple but important one in growing a sport that truly is for everyone.

Women's cricket in recent times has seen tremendous growth in terms of popularity as one can remember the Women's T20 World Cup final between Australia and India in 2020 that attracted more than 80,000 to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Women's cricket will feature at the Commonwealth Games for the first time at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, England.

Such changes are significant as governing body recognises the changing landscape of the game in modern times but are they enough to boost the status of women's cricket? As women's cricket is plagued by a lack of sponsors and lack of fanfare.

The way Indian Premier League (IPL) has promoted men's cricket, amplifying the market of a particular sport in India, women cricket could also use a league of similar stature and reap benefits.

India's Twenty20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur called for a women's IPL competition after India lost a close Twenty20 International contest to Australia at the Carrara Oval on Saturday (October 9).

Harmanpreet credited the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), the domestic T20 competition in Australia, for the national team's success, and alluded to the growth of the Indian men's side thanks to the IPL.

A three-team Women's T20 Challenge tournament, held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates in 2020 alongside the rescheduled men's IPL, has not taken place this year.

Hope the cricket body will take note of what Harmanpreet has said but as of now, an absolute implementation of replacing the word 'batsman' with 'batter' appears to be a significant change. But expectations are definitely there to see more changes in favour of women's cricket.

The governing International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a wait-and-watch approach on Afghanistan but will discuss the game's fate in the country in a board meeting next month, ICC acting chief executive Geoff Allardice said on Sunday.

Afghanistan risk isolation since the country's Taliban takeover in August, with Cricket Australia threatening not to host them for a one-off test in Hobart next month if the new government in Kabul did not allow women to play the sport.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has said it is committed to women's cricket but was awaiting instructions from the government on its future.

"Our primary function is to support the development of cricket in that country through the member board," Allardice told a virtual news conference ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup which begins on Oct. 17.

"We have said all along that we are waiting to see how things unfold under the different regime in that country."

ICC adopts wait-and-watch approach on Afghanistan

Indian cricket team's head coach Ravi Shastri has hailed MS Dhoni as the greatest white-ball captain ever. Dhoni is one of the most successful captains to have led India and achieved tremendous success across all formats. It was under his captaincy that India became the no.1 Test team in the world for the first time before he led the Men in Blue to an ODI World Cup victory after an agonising wait of 28 years.

Dhoni, who led India to numerous memorable victories across the globe, remains the only captain in the world to have won all three major ICC limited-overs trophies as a skipper. He led India to a T20 World Cup victory in 2007 before inspiring them to ODI World Cup victory and Champions Trophy triumph in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Hailing Dhoni as the greatest ever white-ball skipper, Shastri said the former India captain won everything there was to be and is the 'King Kong'.

“Dhoni is the greatest white-ball captain ever. Just look at his record in ICC tournaments. What has he not won? IPL, Champions League, all ICC tournaments, two World Cups. There is no one close to him when it comes to white-ball cricket. He has to be the greatest. The King Kong, you can call him in that fashion," Shastri told Fan Code in an interview.

Dhoni retired from international cricket last year after playing 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is in an international career filled with glorious victories. Lauding the calm and composed attitude of the former India captain, Shastri hailed Dhoni's leadership qualities and said there is a feeling of composure and control when he leads a team.

“When you see Dhoni captaining a side, and you see Chennai Super Kings (CSK), there’s that assurance and calmness of things in control. The other side might be whacking sixes or fours but you still get the feeling there is this composure and control,” said Shastri.

While Dhoni has retired from international cricket, he continues to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni-led CSK became the first team to qualify for IPL 2021 playoffs after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets on Thursday (September 30).

Dhoni will be returning to the Indian dressing room for the first time since his retirement as a mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. He will be working with head coach Shastri and other members of the Indian team's support staff during the T20 World Cup 2021.

India could play one Test match in England next year, says a report by ESPNCricinfo. The one Test match could replace the fifth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester which was cancelled due to Indian team unable to field an eleven after assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar tested positive for COVID-19.

It is understood that a space in England`s schedule in 2022 has been agreed to be kept for the Test. There are thoughts of the one Test likely to complete the 2021 Test series which India currently lead 2-1.

"It has not been confirmed at this stage whether the match will be a standalone game or complete the series started in August, but it will avert the majority of financial losses incurred by the ECB due to the abandonment in Manchester. It may also avert any further disagreements between the ECB and the BCCI about the reasons for the abandonment and who should take responsibility for it," further said the report.

It also said that discussions earlier had included a possibility of the one Test being replaced by two T20Is. With India already scheduled to tour England next year as part of a white-ball tour, it would have been more suitable for the visitors.

The report also said that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has received a proposal from Cricket Australia (CA) on their plans for the tourists during the Ashes, scheduled to begin in Brisbane from December 8.

While the details of the plans are unclear, it is understood that the schedule, which includes details on quarantine arrangements and bio-secure bubbles throughout the trip, are better than what had been feared. It also means a probability of fewer withdrawals from the England squad for the Ashes.

India opening batter Smriti Mandhana has said that her side loves playing against Australia as the ultra competitiveness of the Southern Stars rubs off on the Girls in Blue.

India and Australia will be locking horns in a multi-format series, comprising three ODIs, one-off day-night Test and three T20Is. The first ODI will be played on September 21.

"We all love playing against Australia, because they are one of the best teams in the world and quite competitive. When it`s when it comes to Australia, you`re a bit more pumped because the level of competitiveness the Australian team, just rubs off on us and we also start being extra competitive," Mandhana told The Scoop podcast, as reported by cricket.com.au.

"Australian wickets have a true bounce and I think everyone loves batting in Australia. No one will tell you they don`t like batting in Australia. We are all just really happy to play cricket, whatever the quarantine period maybe," she added.

India and Australia had squared off in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2020, and it was Harmanpreet Kaur`s side who came up short in the summit clash.

"The team has grown massively. COVID was a big break after the T20 World Cup and a lot of girls had a chance to go back and understand more about their games, where they lack as an individual and come back stronger," said Mandhana.

"The whole team has worked on their fitness and skills ... we are still getting into a rhythm of playing matches continuously but the last five, six months we have been playing cricket and now we are getting back into the match mindset," she added.

New Zealand bowling coach Shane Jurgensen will stay on with the team for the full tour of India later this year rather than returning to the country following the T20I series as initially planned.

"The rearrangement of Jurgensen`s winter touring commitments came about after his scheduled departure on Friday was delayed as a result of visa complications caused by the recent nationwide lockdown," New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement on Monday.

NZC said Jurgensen was due to link up with the current Kiwi squad in Pakistan to take over the reins for the five-game T20I series starting in Lahore next weekend.

Instead, Jurgensen will now depart directly for the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE in early October, alongside regular New Zealand coaches Gary Stead and Luke Ronchi.

"The silver lining is that Jurgensen is now able to stay on for the two Test tour of India in late November/early December, rather than returning home as previously planned -- in accordance with NZC`s player and staff welfare protocols," the statement further read.

Current New Zealand coaches Glenn Pocknall (head), Graeme Aldridge (bowling) and Tilan Samaraweera (batting) will continue to lead the touring team in Pakistan, while the previously vacant bowling coach role for the India Test series no longer needs to be filled with Jurgensen on board.

Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik revealed that he spoke to a few of the Indian players currently in England after the fifth match between India and England was called off after few cricketers from the visiting team were reluctant to take the field due to COVID-19 scare.

"I spoke to a few of the guys (Indian players). Almost all games have gone down the wire, they are tired and they have only one physio right now.

"They had two, but before this one went down along with the chief coach, another couple of the coaches, so they had one physio, so they've done a lot of work with that man. And now he tests positive. Now, that is the problem," Karthik told Sky Sports.

The fifth Test between India and England was called off over COVID-19 fears. The match was predicted to go as planned after all Team India players tested negative in the PCR results. However, players expressed their concerns over playing at Old Trafford after India's second physio, Yogesh Parmar, tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.

"If it was somebody else, somebody was helping you know in terms of logistics and all that they wouldn't be this afraid but when this person got it, the physio, I think that's when they got the jitters a little bit," he added.

Karthik even added that the few days left for resumption of IPL 2021 made players more reluctant.

"You also have to understand, as soon as this finishes, they have the IPL soon after that the World Cup, and soon after that the New Zealand series and we are talking about literally one-week turnarounds," Karthik said.

"How many bubbles can they do? When they left, when they assembled in India on May 16 it's almost four months. That's a lot of time already."

"Let's take an example for today, most of the guys today haven't even slept till 2.30-3 in the morning because they don't know if they have to be ready for the match, they don't know because you know it's very late in India, so they don't know if they're going to be able to speak to ECB those kinds of discussions were gone.

"So most of them haven't even slept till 3 O'clock so the Test match happening today was out of question almost. It's whether they can delay it further, but you have to remember that there is a good chance that in the RT-PCR test three days later, someone could test positive and if he's in the playing 11, then what happens to that person," he said.

"Is he going to spread it around? Is he this super spreader for that point of time, that puts every other player in jeopardy, and then they have to stay 10 days in England then what happens to the IPL, which is supposed to start four days after they land in Dubai...

"...So it has so many other questions, it's not necessary that they've tested negative today means that two days later they will test negative again. Even if it is one person who does test positive, then that puts the whole thing into another different dimension," said Karthik.

India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup was finally announced on September 8. The Men in Blue, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, will kick off the campaign by taking on arch-rivals Pakistan.

Three big questions after MS Dhoni's appointment as mentor of Indian team for T20 World Cup

Delhi Capitals` leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who has taken the second-most wickets (166) in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been trying to get used to the conditions in the UAE during the pre-season camp in Dubai ahead of the second half of the IPL 2021.

Mishra, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 just before the IPL was suspended in May 2021, spoke about how he re-built his fitness post recovery from the illness.

"After the IPL was suspended in May, I focussed on my recovery from Covid-19. According to the advice given to me by the doctors, I improved my fitness slowly and steadily. It was difficult for me during the recovery phase, but I am happy that I am here for the second half of the season. I trained on my own and didn`t go close to anybody after recovery. I got some gym equipment such as treadmill and set them up at my home as well because I didn`t want to train in a public gym," said Mishra.

Delhi Capitals had a fantastic run in the first half of the tournament, recording 6 wins in 8 matches.

However, Mishra expressed that all teams will have to start afresh when the season resumes this month, "We are at the top of the table right now, but we have to start afresh. We have to set our strategies again. I think every team has an equal chance of doing well now since we are all re-starting the tournament. We are playing the second half of the IPL in a different country, so we have to devise our strategies according to the conditions here in the UAE."

The leg-spinner added that Delhi Capitals will try to build on the momentum they had in the first half of the season.

"We have been doing well in the last two seasons and the performances have come because of a collective effort. From coaches to selectors to players, everyone should be credited for Delhi Capitals` progress as a team in the last few years. We will try to build on our momentum from the first half of the IPL 2021 season and take one match at a time once the season resumes," said the 38-year-old.

He received criticism after conceding 92 runs in 22 overs at an economy rate of 4.18. Now, former India pacer Ashish Nehra said that he was surprised by the flak Sharma was receiving after just one poor match.

“It will be too harsh on Ishant Sharma if we judge and discuss his place in the side after just one Test match. Somebody asked me yesterday, was Headingley Test Ishant Sharma’s last? I was very surprised that somebody even asked me that question,” Nehra said during a select media interaction organised by Sony Sports Network ahead of the fourth Test match at The Oval starting on Thursday.

“You can’t judge someone like an Ishant Sharma on one game performance. Yes, we have good four-five bowlers and there is a competition there but you don’t want to see a different bowler in every Test match,” he added.

Nehra went on to say that India did not lose the Headingly Test because of Ishant Sharma, however, agreed that the pacer was not at his best.

“Ishant is someone who bowls a no-ball here and there so do Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. Yes, according to me, Ishant Sharma wasn’t looking in the best of the rhythms. We lost that test match so we are discussing that more. Ishant’s rhythm was not the reason we lost it. But don’t forget he missed the first game because of a niggle. In the second, it took him a while but because of experience of playing more than 100 Tests, he got back to his groove quickly and had a good Lord’s Test,” Nehra added.

“Because of conditions in Oval, we might Ashwin get a game in place of a fast bowler, whether it is in place of Ishant or Siraj, only time will tell,” Nehra said.

Ahead of the fourth Test between India and England, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has predicted changes in Virat and Co.'s playing XI. Khan said that there can be a change in India's middle order.

Zaheer Khan talked about the form of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. He felt that while Pujara found a way to score in the previous Test at Headingley, Rahane still could not perform.

“Pujara was under pressure but he found a way to get out of that. He did something different and he got the results. Rahane hasn’t been able to do that. I think the series has reached at such a stage where these things would be analysed. And it’s possible that you can see a change,” Zaheer told Cricbuzz.

“Two players were under fire. One stepped up and performed but the other doesn’t seem comfortable yet,” Zaheer added.

Khan added that senior players cannot be in the team based on past performance but their consistency.

“When you play for a longer period of time, you cannot just be in the team depending on the past performances. You have to meet the continuity.

“At the same time your role gets changed. You don’t just think about your game but need to set an example for the youngsters as a strong middle-order batsman. So, the more you progress in your career, the level of scrutiny also goes up,” he added.

Young opener Devdutt Padikkal said his maiden tour with the Indian team to Sri Lanka was a very exciting appearance. The 21-year-old made his T20I debut in the second match against Sri Lanka, scoring 29 runs. In the third T20I, he could manage only nine runs as India lost the series 2-1.

"It was a very exciting experience for me. Just being a part of the group. I was really excited to be there and was just looking to learn and improve. For lots of us, it was our first tour with the Indian team, and everyone just wanted to pick new techniques up from each other and the senior players in the squad. It was a really good experience overall," said Padikkal in a Bold Diaries video uploaded by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Padikkal has been a great addition for Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He bagged the Emerging Player award in the 2020 edition after scoring 473 runs in 15 matches at an average of 31.53 and strike rate of 124.80.

Following some fine performances with the bat in Englands ongoing Test series against India, skipper Joe Root on Wednesday regained the No.1 spot in the ICC Men`s Test player rankings for batting.

The England skipper has notched up centuries in all the three Test matches in Nottingham, Lord`s, and Leeds, aggregating 507 runs at an average of 126.75. This golden run sees him overtake New Zealand captain Kane Williamson to return to the top of the charts after six years.

Root started the series ranked fifth in the charts, but his form has seen him take massive strides in his charge towards the top spot. From India, Rohit Sharma has been the biggest gainer, overtaking captain Virat Kohli to gain one spot and jump into the top-five batsmen`s rankings. Sharma scored 19 and 59 in the two innings of the Headingley Test match.

Cheteshwar Pujara`s battling 91 in the second innings has also seen him progress three spots to jump up to the 15th spot in the rankings table.

England`s pacers made notable gains in the bowling rankings, after their performances in the third Test. The veteran James Anderson has gained one spot to move into the top five, while Player of the Match Ollie Robinson, and Craig Overton have also risen up the table. Robinson advanced nine places to move up to No.36, while Overton has re-entered the rankings at the 73rd spot.

With the fourth Test at The Oval starting this week, there will be further opportunities for players from both sides to make significant gains in the ranking charts next week.

On Tuesday, Dale Steyn announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The veteran pacer had an illustrious career and was regarded as one of the most lethal fast bowlers.

"It has been 20 years of training, matches, travel, wins, losses, strapped feet, jet lag, joy and brotherhood. Today I officially retire from the game I love the most. Bittersweet, but grateful," Steyn said in a statement.

Steyn has now talked about his time in India and how the crowd loved him. “India is crazy! It’s the closest you’re going to be to feeling like a rock star. You’re treated like a Hollywood or Bollywood star. Cricket is just crazy there. You go to the airport and you’re bombarded, you go to practice and there are 10 000 people watching. It’s doubtful I’ll ever have that experience in my life again with anything that I do,”.

Dale Steyn, who picked up 699 wickets across all three formats and is his country's highest wicket-taker, also talked about some of the greatest batsmen in the game of cricket and said that they did not always let a bowler settle into a rhythm.

“Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting were amazing batters (and sometimes you’d just nod in appreciation). They’re aware of your skills too so they’re trying to come out of this contest between batter and bowler unscathed, trying to get away with it without getting out. They only have one chance, where I at least get six balls,” Steyn was quoted as saying in SA Cricketmag.

Steyn's 20-year long career was marred with injuries. His issues with his shoulder restricted him to only 11 tests after 2015.

Sachin Tendulkar and many others in the cricketing fraternity remembered legend Donald Bradman on his birth anniversary on Friday.

Counted as the greatest Test batsman of all time, no other player from any other generation has been able to match up to his records and achievements in red-ball cricket till date. His legacy lives on more than five decades after he retired from Test cricket.

"The folklore of Sir Don Bradman`s batting genius is synonymous with excellence in sports. You will continue to inspire sports women and men forever. Thinking of you, Sir Don on your birth anniversary," Sachin Tendulkar tweeted while sharing a photo with Bradman.

Bradman scored 6,996 runs in 52 Test matches between 1928-48 at an average of 99.94. No batsman has come close to matching his average over a prolonged career. He was out without scoring in his final innings at The Oval against England when he needed only four runs to lift his career average to 100 runs per innings.

"29 centuries in 52 Test matches, at an average of 99.94. Sir Donald Bradman, forever unrivalled, born on this day in 1908," ICC tweeted. Overall, Bradman represented Australia in 52 Tests and walked to out bat on 80 occasions. He finished his career with 29 centuries and 13 fifties under his name. He also gathered 28,067 runs in First-Class cricket.

An incident, involving the crowd, took place during the third Test match between India and England which left skipper Virat Kohli visibly annoyed. According to Rishabh Pant, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj had a ball thrown at him from the crowd.

In the post-day press conference following the first day's play, Pant was asked why Kohli looked upset at what the crowd was saying. "I think, somebody threw a ball inside, at Siraj, so he [Kohli] was upset," Pant said. "You can say whatever you want to chant, but don't throw things at the fielders and all those things. It is not good for cricket, I guess."

However, it is not clear what kind of ball was thrown at Siraj and it is not sure if it was deliberate or not. Team India also have not filed an official complaint.

This is not the first time in this series where such incidents involving the crowd took place. In the second Test, Indian opener KL Rahul was seen throwing back a champagne cork that was hurled at him by a section of the crowd.

In 2016, the MCC published a newsletter admitting concerns around flying corks and urging the crowd to refrain from such actions.

"In recent times the practice of some members and other spectators opening bottles of champagne in such a way as to allow corks to be projected on to the outfield has been criticised," the letter read.

"Any items which are aimed at the playing area may cause a potential hazard to fieldsmen, and this point has been made formally to the club. Lord's is now the only ground into which members and ticket holders are allowed to bring alcohol, and in order for this arrangement to continue it is important that all members, their guests and other spectators refrain from the practice that has been described."
