2) Lack of&nbsp;genuine pacers

While both Jason Holder and Dwayne Bravo can do the job with the ball in the T20s and have a proven record when it comes to the shortest format, the lack of genuine fast bowlers haunted West Indies at the T20 World Cup 2021. Veteran Ravi Rampaul, who made his comeback in the squad for the showpiece event, managed only two wickets in four appearances for the side.

Left-arm pacer Obed McCoy was in the bowling line-up in the opener against England but was replaced by Jason Holder after getting injured. Oshane Thomas was left to warm the bench for the entire tournament while the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Alzarri Joseph were not even picked in the squad.

West Indies superstar Chris Gayle effectively called time on his international career on Saturday when he admitted: "I'd love to play one more World Cup. But I don't think they will allow me."

The 42-year-old self-styled 'Universe Boss' and his West Indies team lost by eight wickets to Australia at the T20 World Cup, a fourth defeat in five games for the defending champions.

Dwayne Bravo, 38, confirmed he was finished with international cricket, but Gayle was still not ready to join his fellow former captain in quitting.

"It's been a phenomenal career. I didn't announce any retirement but they actually give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd, then I can say 'hey guys, thank you so much.' Let's see," said Gayle who made his debut in the format in 2006.

Gayle has played as many as 132 IPL matches while scoring a staggering 4772 runs at a strike rate of 150.11. The left-handed batsman, who batted at number three for the Punjab franchise in IPL 2020, has amassed six centuries and 31 half-centuries in the tournament while blasting 349 sixes.

Meanwhile, Gayle is also set to face stiff competition from new recruits Dawid Malan, Moises Henriques, Fabian Allen for the overseas slot in the batting order.

Punjab Kings’ Head of Cricket Operations, Anil Kumble, in an exclusive interview with WION, talked about the selection headache as he explained how Punjab Kings planned for the auctions for the 14th edition of the tournament.

“What we needed was some experience in the all-round department, somebody who's played here before somebody who's been a part of winning teams. I mean, Moises brings that experience to the squad. Fabian, again is an exciting young all-rounder from West Indies, we all know, the power-hitting that they bring to the table and in this format, he's done exceptionally well is he's a young all-rounder. So it's nice to have him based on conditions obviously, you know, he's a very good left-hand spinner and then really hits the ball hard. And Dawid Malan brings experience and somebody who can sort of give support to the Indian batters that we have,” Kumble told WION.

West Indies’ superstar opener Chris Gayle on Friday thanked Indian PM Narendra Modi for donating COVID-19 vaccine to Jamaica. India has donated as many as 5,00,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Jamaica, a country&nbsp;Gayle and many other world-class athletes hail from.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"PM Modi, the Government of India and the people of India, I want to thank you all for your donation of the vaccine to Jamaica. We appreciate it," Chris Gayle said in a video.&nbsp;

Even the Jamaican Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton thanked the Indian government for their donation of the COVID-19 vaccine as the virus&nbsp;"continues to grapple with its own public health crises caused by the pandemic."&nbsp;

“Our success is, in part, determined by our ability to cooperate and support each other to fill emergent gaps, while seeking to safeguard the best possible health outcomes for our people affected by this threat. We are relying on the public health system and the partnerships we have established to make that possible,”&nbsp;Tufton&nbsp;had said.&nbsp;

A champion on the field and a self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ off it, West Indies’ veteran cricketer Chris Gayle is one of the biggest names set to feature in this year’s edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, and the Jamaican left-hander is already looking forward to the tournament which takes place from January 28 to&nbsp;February 6&nbsp;in the UAE.

Speaking from his home in Jamaica, Gayle said he is looking forward to taking part in this year’s edition of cricket’s new avatar. “At the moment, I’m actually getting some well-needed rest but keeping the Abu Dhabi T10 League in mind, I’m going to start some training soon and get ready to be back in business," he said.

Expressing his delight at returning to take part in the league after a gap of two seasons, Gayle stated, “First of all, I want to say that it’s good to be back. I’ve missed the past two seasons, so it’s good to be back within T10. There are lots of talented players who will be on show, with the likes of Kieron Pollard and the other international players. So I’m definitely looking forward to be back with Team Abu Dhabi. South Africa’s Chris Morris is also in my team, and I’ve played with him before, so it’s good to be back playing with him and the boys again.”

I think most people don’t recognize the States for cricket, but T10 is very much suitable to be held within the USA, and I believe it can help generate bigger revenues as well.”

“The organizers of the Abu Dhabi T10 League have (built) something fantastic here, so we should now look to spread it and we can get more guys involved and more countries involved within T10 for sure,” added the West Indian.

Speaking about his experience of playing in the T10 League and looking forward to this season, Gayle said, “The first time I played T10 it was really exciting, fun and swashbuckling. I really liked it because it was just powerhouse hitting from ball one, and all the guys enjoyed it. We had a good time as well, so like I said, being back and playing in Abu Dhabi now, it is a better wicket to bat on now, so more runs can be scored. I think that happened last year as well in Abu Dhabi – the scoring percentage rate is certainly higher now, so it’s good luck to the bowlers.”

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has been fined for throwing his bat in frustration after missing out on a record-extending seventh IPL century by one run.

The 41-year-old, who became the first batsman in Twenty20 history to hit 1,000 sixes during his 99 innings for King's XI Punjab, was fined 10 percent of his match fee for a "code of conduct" violation, said an Indian Premier League statement.

"Mr Gayle admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction," it added.

The statement did not give details of his action, but throwing bats and other equipment normally comes under this offence.

The left-hander was bowled in the final over by Rajasthan Royals' Jofra Archer after his 66-ball blitz that included eight sixes.

Gayle then flung his bat, which hit the ground and bounced away. He appeared to apologise to the umpire before walking off.

Punjab went down by seven wickets to the Royals and must win their final game on Sunday to stand a chance of reaching the IPL playoffs.

Gayle has scored three half-centuries in six innings this year for Punjab, who are fourth in the eight-team table.
