In pics: Reliving T20 World Cup 2021 as cricketing carnival ends with a bang in UAE

West Indies were once the powerhouse in T20 cricket and have two back-to-back T20 World Cup titles to back the claim. A country blessed with some of the best all-rounders to have graced the shortest format of the game, the Caribbeans dominated T20 cricket for several years until their downfall in T20 World Cup 2021.

Not many years ago, they were called the dark horses heading into any big T20 tournament, but West Indies shun the tag under Daren Sammy's captaincy and became a force to reckon with in world cricket. The firepower in their batting line-up coupled with the presence of numerous all-rounders in the squad saw the men from Caribbean become the world-beaters in the shortest format.

The quality in their squad was no different this time around as well, as the two-time champions headed into this year's T20 World Cup as everyone's second favourites. They were no more being addressed as the underdogs and were clear contenders to successfully defend the coveted title and make it a hat-trick of triumphs.

However, they had an abysmal campaign finishing last in the Group 1 to miss out on a spot in the semi-final and expose the shortcomings which had been in the making for long. Despite having a fine blend of youth and experience, West Indies were left exposed at the big stage and could do little to hide the evident struggles in the side.

Kieron Pollard's men got off to a woeful start with a shattering defeat against England and could never really bounce back as they managed only one victory in their remaining four matches to finish fifth with just two points. Their abysmal campaign also marked an era in West Indies cricket as Dwayne Bravo retired from international cricket while Chris Gayle all but confirmed he might never turn up in T20Is again.

Here we try to break down what went wrong for West Indies at T20 World Cup 2021:

1) Misfiring batters

West Indies are blessed with some of the most explosive batters in world cricket. They have a batting line-up capable of destroying bowling attacks at will in any game. With the likes of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Evin Lewis, Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer headlining the batting line-up, Windies were expected to bulldoze teams while taking their bowling attacks apart. But that wasn't the case in the UAE.

The openers failed to provide good starts consistently while the middle-order remained non-existent throughout the tournament as the batters failed to fire as a unit. Lewis and Hetmyer did produce a couple of sublime knocks but barring them, the rest of the batters filed to live up to the expectations.

Despite having a batting line-up with the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Jason Holder turning up at no. 8 and 9, West Indies failed to captalise and there failure with the bat was one of the biggest reasons behind their shambolic campaign which saw them win just one out of five matches in the tournament.

2) Lack of genuine pacers

While both Jason Holder and Dwayne Bravo can do the job with the ball in the T20s and have a proven record when it comes to the shortest format, the lack of genuine fast bowlers haunted West Indies at the T20 World Cup 2021. Veteran Ravi Rampaul, who made his comeback in the squad for the showpiece event, managed only two wickets in four appearances for the side.

Left-arm pacer Obed McCoy was in the bowling line-up in the opener against England but was replaced by Jason Holder after getting injured. Oshane Thomas was left to warm the bench for the entire tournament while the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Alzarri Joseph were not even picked in the squad.

3) Spinners failed to step up

While the lack of a genuine pacer cost West Indies dearly in the T20 World Cup 2021, the spinners in the squad failed to make the most of the chances coming their way and were far from impressive. Akeal Hossein and Hayde Walsh were the two spinners in the squad and both of them collectively managed to pick only five wickets throughout the tournament.

While Hossein picked up all the five wickets, Walsh remained wicket-less in the entire tournament as he managed to make only a solitary appearance for the team. The lack of support from the other end meant Hossein had the majority of the burden on his shoulders as a lone spinner and the pressure caught up to his performances.

4) Big names disappointed

Very few teams can boast of quality all-rounders like West Indies did in the tournament. They had the likes of Pollard, Andre Russel, Dwayne Bravo and Jason Holder among others. Anyone of them can be a game-changer with the ball or the bat on their day but all of them disappointed in the World Cup.

While Russell would only score 25 runs and picked up three wickets, Bravo scored 26 runs and managed only two scalps. Captain Pollard scored 90 runs and bowled just 2.2 overs in the tournament while Holder averaged a shocking 85 with the ball and picked up only one wicket. With the bat, he didn't get enough chances and scored ony 24 runs.

Misfiring batting, lack of fast bowlers: Decoding West Indies' downfall in T20 World Cup 2021

After IPL 2021, the cricketing lovers have had plenty of action from the 22-yard cricket strip with the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. While the tournament's knockout round has commenced, there has been plenty to cherish for fans as both batters and bowlers have kept them entertained all throughout.

While some underrated names have made a mark and stood tall for their respective sides, some big-ticket names couldn't live upto the heavy expectations and had a horrendous campaign. Let's have a look at how some daunting names in the shortest format couldn't do wonders in the Super 12 round:

Chris Gayle

The Universe Boss is considered to be the Don Bradman of the shortest format. Playing his last possible T20 WC, the left-hander didn't have a fruitful run in the seventh edition for the two-time winners West Indies. One of the main reasons for Kieron Pollard & Co.'s early exit was due to Gayle's low returns with the bat. He ended the tournament with scores of 13, 12, 4, 1 and 15.

Andre Russell

Russell's big-hitting pushes any opposition to the back foot. However, Dre Russ never arrived in the showpiece event with both bat and ball. He had a forgettable run with scores of 0, 5, 0, 2 and 18*. He, however, fared much better with the ball. The all-rounder claimed three wickets and held his nerves while bowling the final over versus Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter. He also returned with two wickets versus Sri Lanka.

Mohammed Shami

Shami was mercilessly trolled after India's ten-wicket defeat versus Pakistan in their Super 12 opener. While the right-arm pacer did have two very good games, versus Afghanistan and Scotland respectively, the senior pro leaked runs in the other three games. He had figures of 3.5-0-43-0 versus the Men in Green, conceded 11 runs in his single over against New Zealand and was also taken to the cleaners versus Namibia, where he ended with 4-0-39-0. Surely, more was expected from the highly-talented pacer.

Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan, the No. 2 ranked batsman in ICC T20I rankings, hasn't had the best of runs in the tough and tricky conditions in the UAE. In five games for England in the Super 12, the left-hander returned with scores of 28* (25), 8, 6 and 33. He has been a bit slow to start off his innings and hasn't been at his fluent best. Eoin Morgan & Co. have continued to back him and will be desperate to see him among runs in the concluding stages of the tournament.

Glenn Maxwell

The Aussie all-rounder is one of the best T20I players worldwide. After a terrific IPL 2021, Maxwell was expected to go all-out in the T20 WC Super 12 round. However, he hasn't lived upto expectations so far. He has had scores of 18, 5, 6, 0* and 0*. The 33-year-old had enough time to create an impact when he came out to bat versus South Africa, Sri Lanka and England. Nonetheless, he couldn't do much and will like to turn it around in the second semi-final, versus Pakistan.

Mustafizur Rahman

Bangladesh have quite a few big names in their line-up, such as Mustafizur Rahman, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan, etc. Thus, they were expected to do much better than returning winless in the main draw of the tournament. One of the reasons for their disastrous campaign was Mustafizur's poor returns. He returned with only two wickets in the Super 12 but remained economical (except the Australia game). However, more was expected of him for being one of the chief wicket-takers for the Bangla Tigers. The left-arm pacer finished with 8 wickets in 7 games, with four coming in a single encounter.

Mushfiqur Rahim

Rahim has been one of the most dependable batters in the Bangladesh line-up. The right-hander has been a force to reckon with across formats and often bails his side out of crisis. While the experienced campaigner did start well in the Super 12, with a 57* versus Sri Lanka, he fizzled out as the tournament progressed. He ended with a solitary fifty-plus score and five single-digit scores overall (including the qualifiers).

From Universe Boss to Mohammed Shami: 7 under-performers in T20 World Cup

During the West Indies vs Australia T20 World Cup match at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (November 6), Windies' batter Chris Gayle's sweet gesture went viral when he ran and hugged an Australian player.

During the West Indies vs Australia T20 World Cup match at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (November 6), Windies' batter Chris Gayle's sweet gesture went viral when he ran and hugged an Australian player. The incident happened when Gayle dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the only over that he bowled, and went ahead and hugged the Australian batter when he was walking back to pavilion. The gesture left both the players — Marsh and Gayle smiling. During the match, Gayle made 15 off nine balls in what was likely his final innings in national colours. The 42-year-old Gayle smashed two sixes before chopping a delivery from Pat Cummins on to his stumps as he walked back with his bat raised and a standing ovation from his players in Abu Dhabi. Gayle has not yet announced his retirement but is unlikely that he will play for the West Indies who have failed to defend their title this edition. Gayle, a left-hand batsman who can bowl off spin, has amassed over 12,000 runs including 27 centuries in white-ball cricket since he made his debut in a one-day international in 1999. He has also played 103 Tests, scoring 7,214 runs at an average of over 42 and a highest of 333.

T20 World Cup: Chris Gayle wins hearts as he hugs Mitchell Marsh after dismissing him - Watch

Chris Gayle had a fun outing on the pitch as West Indies locked horns with Australia in their final Super 12 game of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Saturday. While Gayle has confirmed he has not yet retired from international cricket, the veteran batter was seen making the most of his time on the field in what might be his last outing for West Indies in a T20I game.

Dwayne Bravo, who had already confirmed he will be retiring after the game against Australia, recieved a guard of honour from the players along with Gayle. The Universe Boss was also seen distributing his cricketing gears to the fans post the match.

Gayle was also in a jovial mood during the game as he was seen hugging Mitchell Marsh after dismissing him during Australia's run-chase. He was also spotted checking David Warner's pocket while the Aussie batter was out batting in the middle. England's Barmy Army came up with a hilarious dig at Warner after Gayle tried checking his pockets.

"Has Chris Gayle just checked Warner's pocket for sandpaper," Barmy Army wrote in a tweet while sharing a picture of Gayle trying to check Warner's pocket during the game.

Gayle scored 15 runs off 9 balls opening the innings before returning to pick up a wicket with the ball in his solitary over. West Indies lost the game by eight wickets after failing to defend the total of 157 runs as the Aussies rode on Warner's magnificent 89 not out off 56 balls and Marsh's 32-ball 53 to complete the run chase with 3.4 overs to spare.

With the win, Australia also retained their second spot on the Group 1 points table and qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021. England and Australia are the two teams from Group 1 who have qualified for the knockout stages.

'Checked for sandpaper': Barmy Army takes a dig at Warner as Gayle touches his pocket during T20 WC

West Indies superstar Chris Gayle effectively called time on his international career on Saturday when he admitted: "I'd love to play one more World Cup. But I don't think they will allow me."

The 42-year-old self-styled 'Universe Boss' and his West Indies team lost by eight wickets to Australia at the T20 World Cup, a fourth defeat in five games for the defending champions.

Dwayne Bravo, 38, confirmed he was finished with international cricket, but Gayle was still not ready to join his fellow former captain in quitting.

"It's been a phenomenal career. I didn't announce any retirement but they actually give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd, then I can say 'hey guys, thank you so much.' Let's see," said Gayle who made his debut in the format in 2006.

"If not, I'll announce it and then I'll be joining DJ Bravo in the backend and say thanks to each and everyone but I can't say that as yet."

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard lamented the "end of a generation".

"We have some guys who have done good things for T20 cricket in our team and around the world. We as people are very proud," said Pollard whose team had already been eliminated from the semi-final shake-up.

Both Bravo and Gayle were given a guard of honour by the Australian players.

"DJ (Bravo) has been a benchmark for all players coming through, and Chris, he's someone I look up to," said Australia opener David Warner who made an unbeaten 89 on Saturday.

Both Bravo and Gayle, key figures in the West Indies' 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup triumphs, have seen their powers wane.

In the UAE, Bravo made 26 runs in total and took just two wickets in five games.

Gayle scored 45 runs and took one wicket with his off-spin, fittingly the second and last Australian wicket to fall on Saturday, that of Mitchell Marsh.

Gayle's place in the squad had been a source of controversy back in the Caribbean even before the World Cup started.

'Lot of struggles'

He had hit only one T20 International half-century in the last five years.

It's a long way from the muscular big-hitting he displayed at the 2007 tournament in South Africa where he made 117 against the hosts in Johannesburg, the first century ever hit at a World Cup.

On Saturday, Gayle was applauded on and off the Abu Dhabi pitch after clubbing two sixes in his brief stay at the wicket where he made a nine-ball 15.

He raised his bat to the crowd, was embraced by all of his teammates and then delighted fans by signing countless items and shirts.

Gayle will head into international retirement with 7,214 runs in 103 Tests with a high score of 333.

He is among a select group of batsmen to have scored two triple centuries in Tests along with Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag.

In 301 ODIs, he smashed 10,480 runs and will finish his T20 career with 1,899 runs and two centuries.

"I've been through a lot of struggle," said Gayle.

"But I've had a phenomenal career. I want to give thanks to actually be standing here today, aged 42 still going strong.

"I've shed blood, I've shed tears in West Indies cricket, you name it, one leg, one hand.

He added: "It really hurts bad when we lose games and we don't get the result. I'm gutted inside for the fans, and especially for this World Cup as well."

Bravo confirmed he was quitting the international game after a career which brought him 2,200 runs and 86 wickets in 40 Test matches and 2,968 runs and 199 wickets in ODIs.

In T20 Internationals, he made 1,245 runs and took 78 wickets before Saturday's game where he managed just 10 runs and went wicketless in his four overs.

"Dwayne was a trailblazer in T20 cricket and set the standard for how the newest format of the game should be played," said Cricket West Indies president Ricky Skerritt.

West Indies superstar Chris Gayle effectively called time on his international career on Saturday when he admitted: "I'd love to play one more World Cup. But I don't think they will allow me.

West Indies superstar Chris Gayle effectively called time on his international career on Saturday when he admitted: "I'd love to play one more World Cup. But I don't think they will allow me." The 42-year-old self-styled 'Universe Boss' and his West Indies team lost by eight wickets to Australia at the T20 World Cup, a fourth defeat in five games for the defending champions. ALSO READ | Former Pakistan skipper hails India's selection, names player who can change the game single-handedly "If not, I'll announce it and then I'll be joining DJ Bravo in the backend and say thanks to each and everyone but I can't say that as yet." West Indies captain Kieron Pollard lamented the "end of a generation". ALSO READ | T20WC: India beat Scotland in 6.3 overs, here's how it changes semis permutations. How can India qualify? In the UAE, Bravo made 26 runs in total and took just two wickets in five games. Gayle scored 45 runs and took one wicket with his off-spin, fittingly the second and last Australian wicket to fall on Saturday, that of Mitchell Marsh. Gayle's place in the squad had been a source of controversy back in the Caribbean even before the World Cup started. 'Lot of struggles' He had hit only one T20 International half-century in the last five years. I'm gutted inside for the fans, and especially for this World Cup as well." Chris Gayle: 'I want to play another World Cup, but they won't let me'

Rohit Sharma to Chris Gayle: A look at players who have featured in all 7 editions of T20 World Cup so far

IPL 2021 ended in a fitting manner on Friday evening (October 15), with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) meeting the Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

The 14th edition of the cash-rich league has been very different from all the preceding seasons as it took place in two halves, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the 14th season lived up to expectations despite the BCCI facing plenty of issues to complete the marquee edition in 2021. The just-concluded season saw many uncapped players standing tall with the bat and ball whereas some known and big names also outperformed for their respective franchises.

While Harshal Patel ended with the Purple Cap, with as many as 32 wickets for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad earned the elusive Orange Cap after Dhoni & Co. won their fourth championship, beating KKR by 27 runs in the finale.

Ruturaj ended with 636 runs at 45.35 along with a strike-rate of 136.26 following his 32 in the summit clash. His opening partner Faf du Plessis gave him a very tough fight for the cap, however, the 24-year-old youngster topped the run-scoring chart courtesy of a two-run lead.

In this way, Ruturaj has joined some elite names in the list for the Orange Cap winners. It includes some big names such as Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, David Warner (winning it thrice), KL Rahul, etc. Here's the whole Orange Cap list after IPL 2021:

Ruturaj's IPL 14 has been a breakthrough season. Returning with as many as four half-centuries and a hundred and taking on many world-class bowlers from the word go, without dropping much sweat, the CSK opener is now being touted as the next-big-thing in Indian cricket and is expected to be the future of the MS Dhoni-led franchise. Following such a season, many experts believe he will be retained by the Yellow Army ahead of the mega auction, later this year.

When he was almost confirmed to be the owner of the cap, Ruturaj told broadcasters at the halfway stage of the finale, "We did brilliantly to get to 192 by hitting some brilliant sixes. We need to bowl well and back it up with the fielding. I wanted him to hit that six (on Faf coming very close to surpassing him in the Orange Cap list) and add those six important runs."

For the unversed, Faf's 86 helped CSK post a competitive 192-3 versus KKR in the season-finale. While the South African missed out on winning the elusive cap, by a whisker, his knock helped CSK defend the total by 27 runs.

From Virat Kohli to Ruturaj Gaikwad: Orange Cap winners in IPL history

West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards has come out in support of his former teammate Curtly Ambrose after Chris Gayle slammed the former fast bowler over his comments on his selection in the T20 World Cup 2021 squad. Gayle had vented out his frustration against Ambrose after the former pacer said that Gayle should not have been an 'automatic choice' in the Windies' T20 World Cup squad.

Richards has now extended support to Ambrose and said he is entitled to his opinion. The batting legend stated that Ambrose is as much an achiever as Gayle and that the 'Universe Boss' should have respected his opinion even if it was not in his favour.

"It's Curly's honest opinion and he's entitled to that and he is just as much an achiever as Chris Gayle at the highest level," Richards told Daily Observer.

"So when you hear it's coming from an individual who would have also been an achiever and being a legend in the department of the sport we would have represented, you must have respect for that too," he added.

Gayle had lashed out at Ambrose after the former West Indies pacer's remarks on his selection. The veteran left-hander called Ambrose a 'negative person' while asserting that he had 'no respect' for him. Ambrose had said that Gayle's recent form in T20 tournaments didn't guarantee him a spot in the Windies squad.

Gayle, who is the leading run-getter in T20 cricket, has 1854 runs to his name in 74 T20Is for Windies. He has two centuries and 14 fifties to his name in T20Is for West Indies. Richards said if he was Gayle, he would have taken Ambrose's criticism in a positive way.

"If I was Chris, the best positive way I would look at it would be to set my mind on what I would like to accomplish because it is just not Curtly because there are so many folks who would have had their criticisms about Gayle," said Richards.

Also Read: 'I have no respect': Universe Boss Chris Gayle slams former West Indies legend for saying 'negative things' Gayle, who is the leading run-getter in T20 cricket, has 1854 runs to his name in 74 T20Is for Windies.

Curtly Ambrose as much an achiever: Viv Richards backs former Windies pacer after Chris Gayle's jibe

Chris Gayle slammed former West Indies cricketer Curtly Ambrose for saying "negative things" in the press and asked him to support the team ahead of the T20 World Cup. Mentioning Ambrose, Gayle said that he had "no respect" as the iconic fast bowler recently said that the 'Universe Boss' shouldn't be an automatic pick in the starting XI for the team in the upcoming T20 WC squad, which begins on Sunday (October 17).

"I can tell you personally and you can let him know that Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, have no respect for Curtly Ambrose whatsoever," Gayle (42) told a radio station, The Island Tea Morning Show, in St Kitts on Tuesday (October 12). Ambrose had said Gayle is not an automatic choice in the West Indies XI for the World Cup.

During his conversation, Gayle said, "I am speaking about Curtly Ambrose. I am singling out Curtly Ambrose, one of your own. I highly respected him when I came into the West Indies team. When I just joined the team, I looked up to this man. But I am now speaking from my heart."

"I don't know what, since he retired, what he had against Chris Gayle. Those negative things he has been saying within the press, I don't know if he is looking for attention but he is getting the attention. So I am just giving back the attention which he requires and which he needs," Gayle added.

Gayle, who was part of the 2012 and 2016 World Cup-winning teams, added that if former West Indies players "continue to be negative" and not support the team, then the Universe Boss is going to be disrespectful, disrespectful verbally in their face."

A look at top five highest totals in IPL history

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has lavished praise on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) youngster Venkatesh Iyer, who has taken the UAE leg of the season by a storm with his brilliant performances. Drawing parallels with Gayle, Jadeja said Iyer's batting reminded of the veteran West Indies batsman who is known for his explosive hitting.

Iyer, who made his debut for KKR in the ongoing UAE leg of IPL 2021, had announced his arrival in style with an unbeaten 41 against RCB in his side's first game of the second leg before notching up a half-century against Mumbai Indians in the next encounter.

Iyer continued his stellar run on Friday and slammed a brilliant 67 in KKR's last encounter against Punjab Kings. Reacting to his tremendous power-hitting against PBKS, Jadeja said his batting style reminded him of a young Gayle, who used to go after the opposition bowlers irrespective of the playing conditions.

“[He is] free-flowing. We talked about Chris Gayle, not that I am comparing him with Gayle or saying that Iyer plays like him, but his mould is somewhat like Gayle,” Ajay Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.

“Now he is 42, but in his younger days, Gayle had the X-factor in him. When he used to bat, it seemed that he can bat at will, no matter what the conditions or the pitch are. For other batters, you might say, ‘the track is slow, scoring might be difficult', but all that did not apply to Gayle. He [Venkatesh Iyer] is just like that,” he added.

Iyer's 67 off 49 delivereies was laced with nine fours and a solitray six as he helped his side post 165/7 on the board in 20 overs. However, his efforts went in vain as Punjab Kings chased down the target with three balls to spare and remain alive in the race for playoffs.

Iyer has so far amassed 193 runs in just five matches for KKR while also picking up three wickets to establish himself as one of the ragular starters in the playing XI.

Revisiting top 5 team totals before IPL 2021 storm kicks off in UAE

Chris Gayle got back to form with 67 off 38 balls as West Indies whipped Australia by 6 wickets in the third T20I on Monday in St Lucia.

With this triumph, the hosts have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-match series.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. They headed out to a fair beginning before opener Matthew Wade at 23 runs was bowled by Obed McCoy and Mitchell Marsh was caught leg-before by Fabian Allen as the guests arrived at 72-2 out of 10 overs.

Alex Carey was then dismissed by Hayden Walsh while captain Aaron Finch who scored 30 runs was excused in the 12th over to leave Australia in a difficult situation at 80-4.

Although, Moises Henriques and Ashton Turner put on Australia's first half-century stand of the series. They sewed 59 runs for the fifth wicket before Moises Henriques was caught at Fabien Allen off Dwayne Bravo in the last over. The batsman was disillusioned and neglected to set up a significant score. They scored 141 runs towards the end of their 20 overs which was never going to be sufficient against a solid West Indies line-up.

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc is perhaps the most dreaded bowler in the world. He bowls with extraordinary speed and gets his yorkers right usually. In any case, he wasn't at the top of his game in the initial two matches of the series.

The third game, however, was particularly extraordinary. Mitchell Starc showed everybody why he is among the best in the business with regards to limited-overs cricket. He bowled with serious speed and control in a match where all his kindred bowlers battled. He yielded just fifteen runs in his four overs and picked up a wicket too.

Despite the fact that Mitchell Starc had a decent game, the equivalent can't be said about the Australian team overall.

In quest for an unassuming 142-run target, West Indies returned home in style with Gayle's rankling game dominating thump that included 4 four's and seven sixes.

It was his first T20 half-century since 2016.

Cricket: Gayle, Shakib and Du Plessis return to Caribbean Premier League

Looks like the Punjab Kings figured out the Devil in the Chennai Pitch. KL Rahul called correctly and bravely chose to field and did well to restrict Mumbai Indians to 131/6. On a slow turning pitch, KL Rahul scored a half-century; along with Chris Gayle who scored a breezy 43 off 35 with 2 sixes and 5 fours and they reached the target with 14 balls to spare.

During the mid-innings analysis on Cricbuzz Live, Gautam Bhimani, Shaun Pollock and Pommie Mbangwa felt that the pitch was a very difficult one and Punjab Kings would need to pace out their innings though Mumbai would have done well to score at least 150. Mbangwa said they needed to score at least 35 in the first 6 while Shaun Pollock put the number at 42. Punjab Kings scored 45 in the first 6 and won the match comfortably by 9 wickets.

“You don't buy experience in a supermarket…he is an experienced player, probably the greatest T20 player ever...come this situation he knew exactly what was required by his side and executed. In the beginning, he did not take the ball on or take the boundary riders on..he hit into the gaps. Even when he was going for boundaries, it really was a percentage sort of innings. Because this is a slow surface instead of fighting against it, he seemed to go with it….pressure was all on the bowlers ...it was a masterful innings really good to see an adjustment...respecting the conditions and working according to them," Mbangwa said during Cricbuzz Live.

“KL Rahul held one end together with his half-century...when it was time to attack, he did that…

Good effort after the brave call.”

Pollock felt it was a tactical win for Punjab. "It was a really good adjustment on their part. It was not his kind of surface. running singles is not his strength but after a point...Chris Gayle negotiated it brilliantly. With all his experience he held his nerve. He didn't panic. That was the impressive part...I must admit the bowlers were brilliant, especially the spinners except for Krunal Pandya….. KL Rahul is a good player of spin….Mumbai tried everything they could. It was a brave call by Rahul to put the team in, on that kind of surface, back it up with the way they bowled and then knock off that score.”

There was a lack of application from Mumbai and Hardik Pandya continued with his poor form for the fifth innings in a row.

Chris Gayle is probably the best T20 player ever: Pommie Mbangwa

Ajit Agarkar has brought up issue stamps over Chris Gayle's position in the Punjab Kings' playing XI. PBKS capitulated to their third sequential loss in IPL 2021 after their nine-wicket misfortune against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Chris Gayle began his IPL 2021 mission from a positive point of view, scoring a quickfire 40 off 28 balls against the Rajasthan Royals. Be that as it may, from that point forward, the southpaw has just amassed a day and a half in three games.

Previous India pacer Ajit Agarkar recognized that dropping Gayle from PBKS' playing XI would be an intense choice, allowed the 41-year-old's great presentation with the bat last season.

"He got 40 in the first game. The challenge with Chris Gayle is that he did not play the first few games last season and then came back and he was as good as ever. So I can understand it is a difficult decision to sit him out. If he is it and when he has done well, you always want to accommodate him. How long can you go on if he is not firing, especially at this stage of his career?” said Ajit Agarkar.

Last season, Punjab Kings (at that point Kings XI Punjab) got off to a terrible beginning, winning only one of their initial seven games. Nonetheless, they figured out how to make something happen and win their next five matches on the skip. Punjab's adjustment of fortune agreed with the incorporation of Chris Gayle, who scored 288 runs in seven games at a normal of 41.14.

Punjab Kings' associate mentor Andy Flower recognized Chris Gayle's powerlessness to run fast singles and twos go about as a debilitation for PBKS in Chennai. Playing forceful strokes has been hard on the MA Chidambaram pitch, with the ball holding and turning on the track.

In such conditions, picking holes and pivoting the strike regularly gets fundamental, with Flower demanding that in a perfect world, groups would need fast sprinters in the center.

With a gifted batsman like Dawid Malan standing ready, it stays not yet clear how long the Punjab Kings will continue with Chris Gayle in their playing XI.

IPL 2021 - Ajit Agarkar questions Chris Gayle's spot Punjab Kings playing XI

Chris Gayle on Monday became the first batsman to hit 350 sixes in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gayle achieved the iconic milestone in the IPL 2021 match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Gayle hammered a Ben Stokes delivery over the deep square for a massive six to complete the historic landmark. The Universe Boss is arguably the most devastating batsmen in the history of T20 cricket and the West Indies veteran continues to be a nightmare for bowlers. He later hit his 351st six in IPL history against Rahul Tewatia.

Such is the dominance of Gayle in the shortest format of the game that the next batsmen to score most sixes in IPL is AB de Villiers and his number stands at 237. To get more insights into the achievement, Gayle has played 133 IPL matches whereas de Villiers has 170 IPL matches under his belt.

MS Dhoni is next on the list with 216 sixes in 205 matches in IPL history.

Ahead of the match, Punjab Kings batsman Nicholas Pooran hoped for a ‘Gayle storm’. However, Gayle was dismissed for 40 off 28 by young Riyan Parag.

“First of all, very happy to be back in India. Looking forward to a wonderful season for the Punjab Kings. All the players are ready and up for the challenge, we are excited to get our first game underway. I am looking to be myself and keep entertaining everyone,” Pooran told host broadcaster Star Sports before the start of the game against Rajasthan Royals.

A champion on the field and a self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ off it, West Indies’ veteran cricketer Chris Gayle is one of the biggest names set to feature in this year’s edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, and the Jamaican left-hander is already looking forward to the tournament which takes place from January 28 to February 6 in the UAE.

Speaking from his home in Jamaica, Gayle said he is looking forward to taking part in this year’s edition of cricket’s new avatar. “At the moment, I’m actually getting some well-needed rest but keeping the Abu Dhabi T10 League in mind, I’m going to start some training soon and get ready to be back in business," he said.

Expressing his delight at returning to take part in the league after a gap of two seasons, Gayle stated, “First of all, I want to say that it’s good to be back. I’ve missed the past two seasons, so it’s good to be back within T10. There are lots of talented players who will be on show, with the likes of Kieron Pollard and the other international players. So I’m definitely looking forward to be back with Team Abu Dhabi. South Africa’s Chris Morris is also in my team, and I’ve played with him before, so it’s good to be back playing with him and the boys again.”

Talking about the impact that T10 has had on cricket, and the potential it holds globally, Gayle added, “I would absolutely love to see T10 within the Olympics. It would be something huge for the sport from a general point of view. I also think T10 can be (held) within the United States also since it’s a big platform. I think most people don’t recognize the States for cricket, but T10 is very much suitable to be held within the USA, and I believe it can help generate bigger revenues as well.”

“The organizers of the Abu Dhabi T10 League have (built) something fantastic here, so we should now look to spread it and we can get more guys involved and more countries involved within T10 for sure,” added the West Indian.

Speaking about his experience of playing in the T10 League and looking forward to this season, Gayle said, “The first time I played T10 it was really exciting, fun and swashbuckling. I really liked it because it was just powerhouse hitting from ball one, and all the guys enjoyed it. We had a good time as well, so like I said, being back and playing in Abu Dhabi now, it is a better wicket to bat on now, so more runs can be scored. I think that happened last year as well in Abu Dhabi – the scoring percentage rate is certainly higher now, so it’s good luck to the bowlers.”

Signing off, the legendary cricketer also had some piece of advice for the youngsters who look up to him. He said, “I believe you can always look at a particular player, but not necessarily try and be that person – you need to be who you are. You need to know your weaknesses and your strengths, and you can pick certain key moments or things from that player’s game, but put it within your game. Don’t try to say, ‘Hey, I want to be a Chris Gayle’. I always want someone to be in their own individual rights to actually say, ‘This is me, this is who I want to be’. I would just tell the youngsters to be confident about themselves, and just get the job done.”

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has been fined for throwing his bat in frustration after missing out on a record-extending seventh IPL century by one run.

The 41-year-old, who became the first batsman in Twenty20 history to hit 1,000 sixes during his 99 innings for King's XI Punjab, was fined 10 percent of his match fee for a "code of conduct" violation, said an Indian Premier League statement.

"Mr Gayle admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction," it added.

The statement did not give details of his action, but throwing bats and other equipment normally comes under this offence.

The left-hander was bowled in the final over by Rajasthan Royals' Jofra Archer after his 66-ball blitz that included eight sixes.

Gayle then flung his bat, which hit the ground and bounced away. He appeared to apologise to the umpire before walking off.

Punjab went down by seven wickets to the Royals and must win their final game on Sunday to stand a chance of reaching the IPL playoffs.

Gayle has scored three half-centuries in six innings this year for Punjab, who are fourth in the eight-team table.

Chris Gayle announced he was ready to shine in the 2020 Indian Premier League with a crucial half-century for the Kings XI Punjab in his maiden innings on Thursday, having missed the first half of the campaign due to selection issues and sickness. The former West Indies captain, 41, is one of the most successful batsmen in the Twenty20 format but before Thursday he was unable to make the team this season, which is being played in the United Arab Emirates due to concern about the coronavirus pandemic in India. The self-proclaimed “Universe Boss” struck five sixes in his 45-ball 53 before he was run out on the penultimate ball with the scores tied on 171 against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. There was some drama in the last over with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal conceding one run in five balls but Gayle’s compatriot, Nicholas Pooran, hit a six on the last to hand bottom-placed Punjab their second win in eight matches. “Come on man, it is the Universe Boss batting, how can I be nervous? Maybe I gave you a heart attack,” Gayle, who pointed at “The Boss” sticker on his bat after reaching fifty, told the broadcaster about the final-over drama. “I thought I had it in the bag but strange things happen in cricket. It was a good innings, my first innings and now I can finish the IPL in 2020 and make myself available for 2021. I can get out of the bubble now and go. “It was important to keep fit. I don’t want to be on the bench but I was enjoying it. I was actually beginning to get more fitter, get the six-pack going, the beach body going.” It was an unusual position for Gayle to bat at number three as the powerful left-hander has mostly been an opener. He took time to adjust but made up for his slow start with lofty hits later. “Team asked me to do a job, I deliver. It wasn’t an issue,” he said.

'Universe Boss' Gayle ready to rock after strong start in IPL

Kings XI Punjab won their second game in IPL 2020 after breaking a five-match losing streak on Thursday after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 wickets. The match came down to the last ball, but a six from Nicholas Pooran sealed the deal for Kings XI.

"When Chris is batting, you always have a chance of winning the game. Once he is there, it is a different mood in the camp obviously. Chris Gayle started his IPL season on a high after scoring a half-century against Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, just one run was needed off the final ball where Pooran stepped in and finished the innings with a six. It reminded him of the situation against Delhi Capitals where the match headed into the super over where KXIP lost the match.

He said: "The last over started, it was like deja vu. Last three balls, one run. It was like the Delhi game all over again but the difference was that I was in the dugout. A million things were running in my mind. I was not clear, to be honest, what I was gonna do. I never wanted to be in that position. After sitting out for so long, I have to bat the last ball."
