West Indies legend Chris Gayle has thrown his support behind India skipper Rohit Sharma, calling him a 'world-class' batter who is poised to deliver big performances in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, set to be played later this month in Pakistan and Dubai.

Rohit, who faced a lean patch in the Test series against New Zealand (home) and Australia (away), struggled in the first ODI against England in Nagpur. However, he roared back to form with a match-winning 119-run knock in India's four-wicket victory in Cuttack on Sunday.

During his 32nd ODI century, Rohit hammered seven sixes, surpassing Gayle to become the second-most six-hitter in ODI cricket with 338 maximums.

"Rohit is a world-class player. He has multiple double-centuries in ODIs. He’s the Hitman and now holds the record for the most sixes in ODI cricket. He just scored a century the other day. I know he had a tough Test series, but great players always bounce back," Gayle was quoted as saying by IANS.

Rohit Sharma on His Comeback

Speaking after his century in Cuttack, Rohit acknowledged his form and credited his mindset for helping him regain his touch. "When you’ve played for years and scored so many runs, it means something," Rohit said in a BCCI video.

"I’ve been in this game long enough to understand what’s required of me. It’s just about going out there and playing my game. Today was one of those days where I did what I do best. One or two knocks don’t change my mindset—I just focus on giving my best every time I step onto the field."

As for the match, Pooran's innings helped TKR, sister franchise of IPL's Kolkata Knight Riders, post a huge total of 250/4 in 20 overs. Apart from Pooran, Keacy Carty also played a blinding innings of 35-ball 73. In reply, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots could score only 206 runs in 20 overs, handing a 44-run win to TKR. TKR are currently at the top of the six-team tournament with two points in one match, same as Guyana Amazon Warriors and Patriots (two matches). TKR's net run rate is, however, better than rest of the two teams. They next play against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons on September 6.

Parthiv Patel recalled his stint at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and lashed out at the team management for their starry culture, where they have always given preferance to some big names -- such as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle -- and not created a team culture. The former Indian stumper, who has been part of several IPL teams during his playing days, was associated with the RCB in 2014 and rejoined them from 2018-2020. During his first stint with the RCB, Kohli, ABD and Gayle were the main players for the franchise whereas the West Indian wasn't part of the camp during Patel's second stopping from 2018 to 2020.

Speaking on Cyrus Says Podcast, Parthiv recalled his RCB stints and said, "I played for RCB, I've have been there for four years. The team is always about individuals it's not about the team. And then everyone will come out of that team will say that. Because it's all about Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle when I was in the team. So they were given the kind of special preference always so there the team culture was not there you can see clearly when they are playing, and that is the reason why they haven't won the trophies. That's the fact."

T20 World Cup 2024, Final: 'India are going to...,' Ex-WI batter Chris Gayle makes his pick - WATCH

Former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle is of the view that India runs the cricketing world and that no one can challenge the authority of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The legendary cricketer's comments come in the backdrop of a section of fans blaming ICC for altering the T20 World Cup schedule and timings to suit the Indian audience - the main source of money for the governing body.

“No one can speak to India. India runs cricket, you know? It’s a fact. Who is going to talk to India? Who is going to challenge India? No one. They control cricket," Gayle was quoted as saying by DafaNews.

Gayle also reflected on the Indian Premier League (IPL) and said there should be a separate window where only the marquee franchise tournament is held so that players do not have to leave midway.

“When the IPL is going on, you see players who have to leave the tournament to go play for their countries,” said Gayle.

“If you have an IPL window [then] it should just be the IPL in that window. You shouldn’t have international cricket during that time frame, because there’s only one team that’s going to benefit, and it's India. That’s unfair. You cannot have a system like that.”

He cited the example of the World Cup window where all other bilateral series are put on hold.

“If it’s a World Cup window, then it’s just that, nothing else. Same for the IPL. If you want the best players in the world to be playing in the IPL, the biggest franchise in history, then you have to allow them to play in that particular window without interference like international cricket. You cannot pull players out of such a big franchise tournament, because it’s unfair and too one-sided,” he added.

Also read | Some England players can’t stomach the IPL fees of Indians: Sunil Gavaskar’s verbal volley makes heads turn

'Be available full season'

Gayle has echoed the sentiments of several ex-cricketers who also believe that IPL should be given the priority window as it is the biggest money-making event in cricket.

After England players such as Jos Buttler, Reece Topley, Moeen Ali, Will Jacks and Phil Salt left IPL midway last season for T20I series against Pakistan, Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at them for not fulfilling their franchise contracts.

“I am all for players choosing country before anything else, but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, it will be letting down the franchises if they pull out now,” said the legendary former India captain.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also stated: “Either be available for full season or don't come!”

The IPL usually starts in the last week of March and runs till the last week of May with players from all across the globe, representing the 10 franchises.

You cannot have a system like that.” He cited the example of the World Cup window where all other bilateral series are put on hold. Also read | Some England players can’t stomach the IPL fees of Indians: Sunil Gavaskar’s verbal volley makes heads turn 'Be available full season' Gayle has echoed the sentiments of several ex-cricketers who also believe that IPL should be given the priority window as it is the biggest money-making event in cricket. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also stated: “Either be available for full season or don't come!” The IPL usually starts in the last week of March and runs till the last week of May with players from all across the globe, representing the 10 franchises. Chris Gayle named West Indies Champions captain for World Championship of Legends 2024

India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru veteran Virat Kohli created history on Friday (March 22) during the IPL 2024 opener against Chennai Super Kings by becoming the first Indian batter and sixth overall to complete 12,000 runs in T20 cricket. Kohli achieved this feat in the 7th over against Jadeja while completing a single on the first ball.

Per the records, Kohli (360 innings) is also the second quickest batter to 12,000 runs in T20s, with West Indian legend Chris Gayle (345 innings) leading the chart. Kohli became the sixth batter after Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales and David Warner to breach the 12000-run-mark.

World Cup: Delhi-game hero Rohit Sharma opens up on breaking Chris Gayle’s most sixes record

As India gear up for the marquee clash against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup, Captain Rohit Sharma showered praise on coach Rahul Dravid, one record he wishes to break in the ODIs, and his thoughts on Rishabh Pant's game plan. The veteran batter - who holds the record of the highest individual score in ODI cricket, is close to breaking an unlikely record.

In a brief chat with the Indian Express, the Indian captain expressed his desire to break Chris Gayle's sixes record in the ODIs. While six-hitting machine Gayle has hit 553 sixes, Rohit is 16 behind with 539 sixes in his name. With India, due to play at least three matches in this ongoing Asia Cup 2023, three ODIs against Australia and the Cricket World Cup to follow, he has ample opportunity to go past Gayle and become the player with the most sixes in the 50-over format.

“I want to break Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record. Never in my life, I would have imagined that I will break the Chris Gayle’s record. It’s funny (flex muscles),” Rohit said as quoted by the Indian Express.

“We have an open relationship. I have enjoyed my time with Rahul bhai. He is passing his knowledge about cricket to everyone,” the India captain said.

Rohit's advice for Pant

Rishabh Pant is recovering from the injuries he suffered in a serious road accident last year. Sharing his thoughts on what he expects from Pant once he returns to the Indian Team, Rohit said, “I want him to continue playing like this. He has backed his game. He is not stubborn, but taking risk is his game. He always says that ‘I play according to the situation.’ He don’t go and start slogging, he read the situation well.”

He is passing his knowledge about cricket to everyone,” the India captain said. Rohit's advice for Pant Rishabh Pant is recovering from the injuries he suffered in a serious road accident last year. Sharing his thoughts on what he expects from Pant once he returns to the Indian Team, Rohit said, “I want him to continue playing like this. He has backed his game. He is not stubborn, but taking risk is his game. He always says that ‘I play according to the situation.’ He don’t go and start slogging, he read the situation well.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Changes to the format for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup mean only ten teams will participate in the mega event in India later this year. While eight nations, including former winners, have already qualified, teams like Sri Lanka and West Indies are fighting for those two remaining spots, alongside eight other teams in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. And as things stand, West Indies’ chances of going through look bleak, something most cricket fans, especially veteran batter Chris Gayle, are upset about.

The inaugural winners in 1975 and then champions again four years later, West Indies, for the first time in cricket history, could miss out on playing the 50-over World Cup. In the Qualifier, they are sitting in the bottom position after losing two crucial matches, one against the hosts, Zimbabwe, and the other against the Netherlands – a game dubbed by many as one of the best.

After being asked to bat first, RCB openers - Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, the pair in the hottest form, started from where they left off and put up another 50-plus run-stand this season inside the Powerplay overs. While Faf departed early, much to everyone's surprise, Kohli stood his end and took down the bowling attack with utter ease. IPL 2023: Chris Gayle comes up with special praise for Virat after 6th ton, says 'I was lonely and bored'

Former Windies legend Chris Gayle has called for fit Jofra Archer to lead England’s pace attack during the home Ashes that begins in around a month's time. Gayle hailed England’s Test team coach Brendon McCullum for a sea of change he brought into the side and also applauded their new brand of cricket, ‘Bazball’, that has taken the world by storm.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the sidelines of Miami GP, Gayle said he is looking forward to watching the Ashes and being there at some point as well. He added, despite England being the hot favourites this time, no one should discount Australia, and considering they are also playing India in the WTC ahead of the Ashes, which begins on June 16th in Edgbaston, the Aussies would have some match practice heading into the battle for the urn.

"The cricket England play now is fantastic. They play good, aggressive cricket" Gayle told Sky Sports. "Brendon McCullum brings something special to the England Test side.

"[Australia] have the World Championship final against India that's going to be interesting so I'm looking forward to it,” Gayle said.

"The Ashes is always going to be interesting with Australia and England so I think it will be a good game of cricket to watch, and hopefully, I'll be there," the former Windies legend added.

England’s Test captain Ben Stokes has asked for eight fast bowlers for the Ashes; while the onus would remain on the veteran pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad early on, with Ollie Robinson waiting in the wings, Stokes wants bowlers who can bowl above 90mph like Mark Wood, Olly Stone and Jofra Archer to attain complete fitness so that they can be rotated during the home showdown.

Speaking particularly of Archer, who following the 2019 WC triumph, suffered a series of injuries, which also saw him missing Test cricket for over two years now, Gayle said Archer needs to be back to his best as England and world cricket need him.

Calling him entertaining and an express pacer, Gayle wished him good luck in his recovery.

"It's sad to see. He's been out for a long time but it's good to see him back on the field. Gayle said. "He missed a few games in the IPL. England need him; world cricket needs him as well. We need an express, entertainment from a fast bowler. I wish him all the best," Gayle said.

Chris Gayle hails magnificent McCullum, calls for fit Jofra Archer to lead England's attack in 2023 Ashes

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) great Chris Gayle has fired a warning at Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner despite his 51-run knock against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner was accused of slow batting by Gayle while also highlighting that he is putting pressure on him and the other batters due to his approach. Delhi failed to register their first win of the IPL 2023 after they lost on the last ball of the contest against Mumbai on Tuesday, April 11.

"In the first six overs, he showed a bit of intent and tried to be positive there. The wicket was very good to bat on in the powerplay. But he is putting a lot of pressure on himself and the other players as well. Players feel they have to come while he is not getting to ball away, they pretty much have to go from ball one and that is causing Delhi a lot of problems in the middle," Gayle told the digital broadcasters.

According to Gayle, Warner needs to go all guns blazing while attacking from the start. Warner scored a fifty on Tuesday but was not enough for his side as they lost on the final ball of the match. "So that’s something he needs to work on. He is experienced enough to know what to do. He spoke about it in the previous game," he added. IPL 2023: Not Virat Kohli or Chris Gayle! THIS star player has won most Orange Caps in mega event history

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remain only one of the three teams, from the initial eight franchises, to have not won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title to date. The RCB franchise have come close to winning the title on three occasions, reaching the final in 2009, 2011 and 2016, but have never tasted success as yet. Over the years, the fan-following has just grown for the RCB camp who have had some big marquee players such as Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Kevin Pietersen, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, etc.

The trio of Kohli, ABD and Gayle have entertained fans over the years. Recently, the former South African captain De Villiers recalled the first impression he had of Kohli to which Gayle gave an epic reply. During a conversation with Universe Boss Gayle, in the video posted by RCB on their YouTube channel, De Villiers said, "Oh my goodness...I have had this question before and I had given this answer before as well. I think he was quite cocky and arrogant when I met him the first time. With that hairstyle and he had bit of a strut going..."

To this, the West Indies legend Gayle burst out laughing and asked, “Flamboyant, was he?”

IPL 2023: Virat Kohli asks crowd to cheer louder as Chris Gayle shows DANCE moves - Watch

Windies batter Johnson Charles scored a hundred off just 39 balls against South Africa during the first innings of the ongoing 2nd T20I in Centurion on Sunday. The explosive right-handed batter broke legendary Chris Gayle’s record of the fastest hundred by a Windies player in T20Is. In 2016, against England during the T20 World Cup group game in Mumbai, Gayle hammered a 47-ball ton that saw Windies chase down 183 in the 19th over.

Thanks to a record-breaking hundred by Charles today, Windies also registered its highest score of 258 at the SuperSport Park. Coming to bat inside the first over, Charles started slamming the South African bowlers to all parts of the ground.

Charles completed his fifty off 24 balls inside the eighth over, which is also the fastest against South Africa in T20Is. Soon after, alongside opener Kyle Mayers, the pair stitched together a hundred-run plus stand in the following over.

Charles put in the fifth gear as he approached his hundred. Taking down each bowler with sheer power and pure timing, Charles became the third player after Romania’s Sivakumar Periyalwar (against Turkey in 2019) and Hungary’s Zeeshan Kukikhel (against Austria in 2022) to reach the three-digit-mark on 39 balls.

It also is the second-fastest T20I ton in world cricket as the record for the fastest hundred in the shortest format is jointly held by three players – they include India’s Rohit Sharma, South Africa’s David Miller and Czech Republic’s Sudesh Wickramasekara, all of whom did it in 35 balls.

Meanwhile, even after completing his maiden T20I hundred, Charles didn’t stop and instead continued attacking Proteas' best bowler on the day, Marco Jansen – who eventually picked his wicket in the 14th over. Following his dismissal, Windies' lower order took the onus and helped them reach a mammoth total of 258 for five in 20 overs.

As things stand, South Africa, in their chase, has crossed the 84-run-mark inside the fifth over with experienced opener Quinton de Kock completing his fifty off just 15 balls.
