BTS military service update: BigHit Music requests fans to not send gifts to military barracks

BTS members V and RM, who have earned their place on stage with their stunning acts, are&nbsp;now proving their mettle in the military. The two enlisted in the South Korean army ahead of Jimin and Jungkook. A website called The Camp,&nbsp;known for sharing glimpses of soldiers in service has released a series of photos featuring V and RM posing with their fellow service members in their unit.&nbsp;

A few photos that were released showed both the singers posing alongside their respective military units. Another batch of group photos of the recruits was released by the Nonsan Training Center on January 4. In the photos, V can be seen wearing a platoon leader tag. In recent photos that have surfaced, RM is the one who stands out with the blue tag slung over his shoulder.

Each picture was taken separately. Notably, V has chosen to hide the lower portion of his face in these recent pictures. According to reports, V&nbsp;has joined the Army's Capital Defense Command Special Task Force.

What does the Blue tag in the South Korean military represent?

In the South Korean army, the coveted "blue tag" marks a soldier as elite, honed to exceptional skill in fields like marksmanship and fitness. Earning this tag in the South Korean military is a badge of honour, awarded to the most skilled troops who typically undergo rigorous training to earn such a tag.&nbsp;

The Camp is a South Korean military app that initially refrained from featuring BTS members' pictures due to an IP dispute with HYBE. But with its new set of photos, it seems to have overcome that hurdle. The recent photos from The Camp reveal V and RM alongside other service members.&nbsp;

It was the cheers they got from their fans, ARMY, that kept them going strong. The initial two episodes of the docuseries BTS’ Monuments: Beyond The Star were revealed on December 20. The following episodes from the film will release on December 27, January 3 and January 10.

BTS' Jimin dedicates 'Closer Than This' song to ARMY; assures fans he'll come back soon

All members of BTS, including Jin, J-Hope, Suga, RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook, have officially started their mandatory military service in South Korea. Their enlistment has ignited global interest, particularly regarding the demanding military training procedures they will undergo, which includes the gas chamber, the obstacle course and the gruelling marches.

One of the most rigorous challenges in South Korea's military training is the gas chamber challenge, known as the Hwasaengbang.

The Hwasaengbang gained public attention through its appearance on shows like Real Men and Infinite Challenge, which showed soldiers enduring intense exercises in a gas-filled room without masks. Some struggled with the tasks, leading to instances of fainting.

With each BTS member now enlisted, speculation arises regarding whether they will all undergo this rigorous training. Earlier images of Jin at the Hwasaengbang camp depict soldiers practising in an actual gas chamber. A picture shows Jin washing his face, a common post-training routine.

Since Suga has been deemed "unfit for regular combat duty" and has been chosen to serve as a social service agent in the South Korean military, he won't have to go through the gas chamber training, however, other remaining members might soon begin the rigorous training in their country.

Japanese media outlet Nippoin News Network reacted to South Korea's tough military practices, mentioning that BTS members need to complete various training, including entering gas-filled rooms without masks.

Meanwhile, several netizens from South Korea who have undergone the task during their military service recently took to social media to share their experiences online.

A netizen wrote, “It's a CBR (chemical, biological + radiological) and a grenade drill. They put on a gas mask to enter and exit a gas chamber. It's part of the training programme.” Another one said “Yeah, I was medically retired a few years ago. Trust me, if I could go through the gas chamber in basic training and be fine and sure Jin will be more than okay.”

A third post read, "I'm pretty sure he is not gotta want us to see him go through it. As someone who has gone through military training, it really sucks. He will have to go through combat and weapons training and go through the gas chamber. Hopefully, he doesn't have to get pepper sprayed too.”

The members of BTS, the globally acclaimed K-pop sensation, find themselves at a crossroads as all members of the band have now embarked on their mandatory military service in South Korea. This decision, confirmed by their agency, BigHit Music, owned by HYBE, last October, has significant implications for the future trajectory of the boy band and its individual members.

<h2>Mandatory military service</h2>

The initiation of this mandatory military service became apparent when Jin, the eldest member of BTS, enlisted in December 2022. Now, the remaining members, including lead vocalist Jung Kook, are following suit, adhering to the legal requirement for all able-bodied South Korean men aged 18-28 to serve in the military. The obligation, ranging between 18 and 21 months, is deeply ingrained in South Korean society, and is viewed as a rite of passage for young men.

<h2>ARMY's emotional response</h2>

This hiatus has sparked conversations about the impact on BTS's colossal fanbase, affectionately known as the ARMY. With their engagement on social media being unprecedented, the departure of the members has left a void that many fans are finding hard to fill. The emotional responses were evident as the four remaining members—RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook—departed for their military service, with fans expressing their heartfelt sentiments on various platforms.

The commitment of the ARMY to BTS has been a driving force in the group's unparalleled success. The fanbase's dedication extends beyond streaming music and attending concerts.

It manifests in diverse forms, from trending hashtags to charting BTS songs on platforms like iTunes, showcasing a level of loyalty that is rare in the music industry.

The surge of BTS's 2017 single, "Spring Day," to the top of the US iTunes charts during their absence exemplifies the ARMY's unwavering support.

K-pop academic Jimmyn Parc notes while speaking to the BBC that there is a potential for short depression among fans during this hiatus. The sense of loss is palpable, akin to a wartime separation of loved ones.

The fandom's actions mirror historical gestures of devotion, such as WW2 wives sending off their sweethearts to war. The ARMY's emotional tributes, expressed in various languages, highlight the global reach and impact of BTS.

<h2>What the future holds</h2>

As BTS takes a collective break, questions loom about their future dynamics. Will they return to BigHit Music, their current agency, or explore new avenues? The uncertainty extends to individual pursuits, with speculation about solo careers gaining traction.

The hiatus also prompts contemplation about the nature of BTS's future activities—will they solely engage in reunions, or will members pursue independent projects?

The global success of BTS, often compared to the Beatles, has led to widespread anticipation about their next moves.

The hiatus, though challenging for fans, presents an opportunity for other K-pop groups to step into the limelight. The void left by BTS's absence opens doors for emerging bands like New Jeans and Le Sserafim, offering them a chance to receive more attention on Western mainstream charts.

The longevity and sustained popularity of a musical group during a hiatus are often uncertain. However, industry observers believe that BTS's dedicated fanbase and their management's strategic approach will play crucial roles in maintaining their status.

Jeff Benjamin, a K-pop columnist and writer at Billboard Magazine, emphasises the importance of consistently providing content during the hiatus. BTS's meticulous preparation, including songs, videos, and fan messages, showcases their commitment to keeping the connection alive with the ARMY.

<h2>Historical roots of mandatory military service</h2>

The mandatory military service, deeply rooted in South Korea's history, traces back to the post-World War II division of Korea into Soviet-aligned North Korea and America-aligned South Korea.

Article 39 of the South Korean constitution established the duty of national defence, and conscription became mandatory in 1957. The duration of service, initially set at 30 months, has been reduced to the current range.

The necessity of military service is closely tied to the conflict with North Korea, as the two nations technically remain at war. Exemptions or deferments, whether based on being the sole breadwinner or possessing exceptional talents, reflect the complexities of the system. Notably, there have been exemptions for artists and athletes, including footballer Son Heung-min, who was exempted after the national team won gold at the 2018 Asian Games.

<h2>Controversies and exemptions</h2>

Controversies surrounding conscription include societal expectations and the potential stigma faced by those perceived as evading service. The exemption system, installed in 1973, aimed at recognising achievements in various fields. Evading conscription, as demonstrated by pop singer Yoo Seung-jun, has had consequences, including deportation.

<h2>Conscientious objection and legal changes</h2>

The practice of conscientious objection has been a point of contention, with individuals facing a choice between military service against their beliefs or punishment. Human rights groups and international organisations, including the United Nations, criticised South Korea for violating the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. In response, the South Korean Constitutional Court ruled in 2018 that alternative civilian service must be introduced for conscientious objectors, leading to a change in the law in 2019.

<h2>BTS' future remains uncertain</h2>

As BTS members fulfil their mandatory military service, the impact on the broader K-pop industry, the future of the group, and the global music scene are shrouded in uncertainty.

While the hiatus prompts reflection for BTS, their fans, and the industry, the ARMY's steadfast support, combined with the strategic planning by BTS's management, is poised to play a decisive role in shaping the group's trajectory upon their reunion in 2025.

The world anticipates and closely observes the unfolding of the next chapter in BTS's extraordinary journey.

BTS's youngest member, Jung Kook, bid an emotional farewell to the BTS ARMY on a Weverse live session right before embarking on his compulsory military service. After the enlistment of V and RM, Jung Kook expressed mixed emotions on the eve of his own departure. Donning a grey sweatshirt and matching cap, Jung Kook began by apologising to the ARMY for the delay in the live session, explaining that he had sent off V and Namjoon earlier in the day and had a lot on his plate since it was his last day at his home. "It looks like this will be my last live before enlisting. Today I just sent off V hyung and Namjoon hyung. Then I ate a meal and did some things I need to do, cleaned up, and prepared some things, so the live ended up being a little late, sorry," he said. Sharing his thoughts on the impending enlistment, Jung Kook said, "Now that it’s the day before, my heart and mind feel a bit iffy, but I need to sleep tonight so I can concentrate tomorrow and stuff too." Attempting to comfort the fans, he reassured them, by saying, "I’ll go and come back well or safely." Visibly holding back tears, the Golden Maknae conveyed deep gratitude to the ARMY for their unwavering support throughout BTS's journey. As the live session approached its end, Jung Kook bid farewell to his fans, acknowledging how difficult goodbyes are. "Goodbye, stay safe, bye bye, I’ll go now. I just came for a short bit today to give my greetings, I love you, oh, it’s not the last live ever. just the last one before I enlist. I’ll come back stronger than before. Bye," he concluded. This emotional farewell triggered an outpouring of emotions from the ARMY, with several fans taking top social media and penning heartfelt notes for their favourite K-pop star. "Not seeing any emojis on Jimin's Weverse post or hearing Jung Kook say 'one more song' during his live.. gonna curl up in a ball and cry," wrote a fan on X, formerly Twitter. Another wrote, "OMG Jungkookie I still can't stop the tears." A third post on X read, "You all remember when Jung Kook did his first live on Weverse this year and he even tried live on Instagram after.. he had so much fun with us on that day, and he kept coming back. month after month, till.. today. I'm so thankful for all those moments, forever." BTS member Jung Kook gets emotional during last live session with ARMY before military enlistment

Global K-pop sensation BTS' two members&nbsp;RM and V have commenced their mandatory military duties, according to the band's management agency. Jimin and Jung Kook are scheduled to enlist in the military the following day.

Jin, J-Hope, and Suga are already well into their conscription period, each fulfilling unique roles within the military. Jin and J-Hope are serving in the army, while Suga has chosen the path of a social service agent, an alternative form of military service. Despite the separation imposed by their military obligations, the seven members plan to reunite as a group in 2025.

According to HYBE, the management company overseeing BTS, RM and V arrived at an army boot camp in the central city of Nonsan to initiate their 18-month compulsory service. Jimin and Jung Kook are expected to report to the army together, though this has not been officially confirmed.

"I’ve been so happy to have been a part of BTS for the past 10 years … Eighteen months can feel both long and short at the same time, and I’m sure this period will be a strange and new time of inspiration and learning for all of us," expressed RM in a statement posted on his Instagram account. "See you in the future. I love you a lot."

The military journey for RM and V will commence with five weeks of combat training before they are assigned specific units and duties. The Military Manpower Administration has emphasised that the BTS members will undergo the same rigorous process as other South Korean males conscripted for service.

Under South Korean law, most able-bodied men are obligated to serve 18-21 months in the military. Notably, exemptions are granted for athletes and classical artists who excel in certain international competitions tied to national prestige, a privilege not extended to K-pop singers.

A public debate ensued last year over whether BTS members should be exempted due to their artistic achievements. However, in October 2022, their management company settled the matter, announcing that all seven members plan to fulfil their military duties. In December, Jin became the first BTS member to enter the army after withdrawing his request to delay conscription.

A new chapter is about to begin for some BTS members as they gear up for their mandatory military service in South Korea. V, RM, Jungkook, and Jimin have been making headlines throughout the year for their upcoming enlistment.
