A member of K-pop megagroup BTS was hit with an $11,000 fine -- almost the maximum possible -- for driving an electric scooter while drunk, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

SUGA, 31, was discovered lying on the ground next to his e-scooter by police late at night on August 6, with a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit.

The singer, who is currently performing mandatory military duties as a social service agent, has already had his driving licence revoked.

Police have said SUGA's blood alcohol level was 0.227 percent -- nearly three times what is permitted by law.

Driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.2 percent can result in a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine of up to 20 million won under the South Korean Road Traffic Act.

The BTS band member has also issued two apology notes on Weverse, the platform where BTS interacts with fans.

In his latest letter, Suga wrote, "It is with feelings of shame that I apologize once again to you all. I apologize very deeply for having disappointed and hurt my fans and everyone who loves me through my wrongdoings. I forgot my responsibility to repay the love I’ve received up until now by behaving in a manner fitting of that love, and I made a grave mistake. On the night of August 6, I made the mistake of riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk after drinking. I also apologize for causing a great deal of confusion through my first apology that I hastily posted on August 7. I should have thought more deeply and carefully, but I failed to do so."

Lim Young-woong may not have as many fans as BTS, but the trot singer is rivalling the global superstars, showing there's more to South Korean music than K-pop with his billions of streams and a sold-out stadium tour. Once dismissed and widely ridiculed as music for pensioners, trot blends traditional Korean music with elements of Western jazz, swing and Japanese Enka.

But 33-year-old Lim is one of a fresh crop of younger artists breathing new life into the genre, with its melodramatic ballads and upbeat tunes finding massive audiences in the South, helped by a wave of reality television shows.

The original and most successful of these, "Mr Trot" was won by Lim in 2020, with more than a third of all South Korean viewers watching the final -- and his victory turned him into a nationwide sensation. His songs now have a record-breaking 10 billion streams on Melon, the South's largest music platform; his official fan club has more than 200,000 members; and his stadium tours sell out in minutes.

Lim is also South Korea's most loved singer, according to a June Gallup poll, beating out BTS, who were ranked third favourite at home. He also out-earns BTS members -- individually, not as a group -- with ticket sales for his recent tour raking in about $22 million, industry data shows.

"Domestically, articles about him generate more traffic and gain more likes than BTS," veteran entertainment journalist Seo Byung-ki told AFP, adding this was known as "Lim Young-woong syndrome". The star's moving back story -- "losing his father at a young age, growing up with the care of his grandmother, barely making a living, then winning a television show" -- coupled with his "perfect" vocals make him a surefire public hit, Seo said.

Although he's largely unknown internationally, his fame has spread to the isolated North, where music from the South is banned, but activists routinely send USB sticks full of his songs by balloons across the border. Defectors have reported he's popular.

- Elderly fans -

At a recent concert in Seoul, tens of thousands of fans, all dressed in sky blue and waving glowing electronic wands, wept as Lim appeared on stage. His fans are mostly elderly, and for many, this is their first celebrity obsession.

Baek Soon-ok, 87, had never watched a YouTube video of a celebrity or attended a concert before she discovered Lim. "He's such a kind person, good to his mother, and most of all, a great singer," she said, wearing a sky-blue T-shirt with Lim's face. "I never imagined I would like an artist as much as him," she added.

In Lim's hometown of Pocheon city, a sky-blue cafe named "Woong's Tree" doubles as a shrine to the singer. Outside, the walls and windows are adorned with photographs of Lim. Inside, an extensive collection of his merchandise is on display, alongside life-size, smiling cutouts.

Lim "saved her life", cafe owner Chun Eun-kyung told AFP, saying that when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, his music helped her endure treatment. "I listened to his song 'Wish' when I was in chemotherapy and it struck my heart," she said, adding he helped her let go of her fear of dying of cancer.

After that, she began to follow Lim wherever he performed, and along the way, she met fellow super fans -- known as Hero Generation, as his name means "hero" in Korean -- and opened the cafe to create a space for them to gather and celebrate Lim.

"He's my strength, my happiness," said another fan and cafe regular, 60-year-old Lee Bu-duk.

Trot prodigy

Although K-pop still dominates South Korea's musical exports with artists like NewJeans topping US charts, local credit card data suggests trot is growing faster domestically, with K-pop concert sales up just 34 per cent, compared to 134 per cent for trot.

And more young singers are entering the market. Lim and his "Mr Trot" appearance made Park Sung-on -- then just 12 -- realise he wanted to pursue the genre. "I think it fits the sentiment of what Koreans feel," Park told AFP of the genre.

He appeared on a later version of the "Mr Trot" show and finished in the top 10. Now hailed as a budding "trot genius", Park released his debut single in March 2023. "I don't think I'm a star. I had to work hard to get here," he said. But Park says he hopes to dedicate his life to trot. "I think of it as a lifelong partner."

Jin left Seoul for France on Thursday to take part in the torch relay, which has been underway for more than two months in the country.

The organiser did not reveal why Jim was chosen as one of the torchbearers in relay but it can be assumed that BTS' global popularity was perhaps the reason for his involvement at the event. Jin is the only member of the BTS who has completed the mandatory military service. His other fellow band members are still serving in the military, as it is mandatory for South Korean men.

BTS' Jung Kook teases solo film heading to theatres, ARMY loses their calm

Looks like not all’s well between BTS members. According to reports, BTS star Jin who was the first to enlist in the South Korean military and thus the first to get out, has reasons to believe that others in the boy band are jealous of him. Speaking with Weverse Magazine, Jin spoke about band members RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, Taehyung and Jung Kook being extremely envious of him.

He also spoke about “typical Namjoon” playing Dynamite on his saxophone when he was recently discharged from South Korean military service.

Jin reacted to RM, aka Kim Namjoon, playing Dynamite, to welcome him back. He said, "I didn’t even realise he was playing next to me, and I only found out the song being played was Dynamite when I saw the video later. I was an assistant drill sergeant, so I was used to hearing the saxophone in recordings of the army band all the time, like at discharge and enlistment ceremonies.”

He continued, "So when I heard music playing, I just assumed it was the same discharge music as always. I was crying, and I had to salute here and there because there were reporters, and I was just so overwhelmed that I had no idea. Then I turned to look and saw Namjoon and was like, 'Huh?' It was the typical Namjoon, but he was wearing something super weird! (laughs) It was like, 'What? Anyway, thanks for coming. Alright, Namjoon, let’s go, let’s go'".

They all had that look on their face, they said. So I didn’t brag about it or anything, I just teased them a lot. It was too good seeing them get all worked up about it. I kept it up for around 30 minutes."

Jin thinks all other BTS members Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, RM, Taehyung and Jungkook are jealous of him

Jin, the eldest member of BTS, has completed his tenure serving in the South Korean Army, and has shared several anecdotes of his time there.

Speaking to Weverse Magazine, Jin talked about why he got angry once. The BTS member also revealed how he treated his squad to food during military service and why they cried when he was discharged. Jin also revealed that he was referred to as 'God' in his squad.

The singer shared how he spent his military pay to buy food for everybody. "A lot of them were just turning 19 and never even had a job before, but I’m a lot more financially stable, so I’d say, 'You gotta eat well to stay healthy. Come on, I’ll treat you,' and pay for their food. I bought them so much fried chicken, jokbal, and pizza, that later on they got sick of them. I even took people from other barracks out to have a barbecue. Sometimes the guys would joke around and say, 'Sergeant Kim, did you do anything other than sleep today?' And then I’d say, 'What barracks are you from? I was gonna buy you dinner tonight, but not anymore. You’re not coming with me!' Then they’d say, 'Sorry, sir!' We just goofed around like that, and I’d buy them all dinner anyway. (laughs) That made people in my squad call me a God, not to brag. As soon as they saw me, they’d say, 'Worship him!' (laughs)."

Jin also shared he lost his cool once. "I’ve been in the entertainment industry for 10 years already, and there’s still tons I don’t know. I make mistakes—everybody does. There was only one time I lost my temper. One soldier did something wrong but kept joking around and saying, 'I’ll figure it out myself, sir' and I told him, 'It’s okay if you make mistakes. It’s not like I know everything. I make mistakes, too. But if a senior soldier tells you to do something, you have to at least pretend to listen. You can’t keep goofing around like that. BTS stars Jimin and Jung Kook will soon be getting on a crazy new adventure. The two stars will be seen in a new Disney+ travel reality show called Are You Sure?! The travel show will be an eight-part series which was notably filmed before the two enlisted in South Korean military (which is compulsory for all male members of the society). What is the new show all about? The show will follow both Jimin and Jung Kook as they travel to three iconic global destinations: New York state in the USA, Jeju Island in South Korea and Sapporo in Japan. The show “will take viewers on a fun-filled journey with Jimin and Jung Kook as they eat, shop, cook, camp, canoe, swim and road trip together.” The show promises to “give a deeper look into Jimin and Jung Kook’s undeniable chemistry and endearing friendship as they bond over a variety of unforgettable moments throughout the trip immersing in different cultures, exploring various action-packed activities, and trying out local cuisines.” The teaser for the travel show was dropped last night as it features a slideshow of photos showing two band members exploring stuff. The show was first teased on a YouTube show as BTS member Suga asked guest Jung Kook about his future projects and he hinted at a show that he and Jimin have filmed together. In the video, Jung Kook told Suga, “On a shoot with Jimin ages ago, he said it might be fun to do a travel variety show with me, and I agreed. But it didn’t end up going anywhere after that. Then suddenly, they set up a shoot.” Are You Sure?! will be available to stream on Disney+ starting on August 8. This is the first travel reality show for Jimin and Jung Kook together.
