"I was diagnosed with depression in 2014. I used to feel weird that people don't talk about it. It was a stigma and people don't even know much about it. During that time, I realized that if I am experiencing this, then there would be many people out there facing depression as well. My ambition in life was that if I could save just one life, then my purpose was solved. We have come a long way now," she reportedly said.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s 'Thalaivii', which is the biopic of Indian actor-turned-politician Jayalalithaa, is releasing on September 10 in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi.

And for getting her act right for the movie, Kangana Ranaut had to dive into the life of the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

“I do not know much about Jaya Amma before doing the film. It is very difficult to make a film on her because Tamil people know about everything in her life. So, there is no chance of cinematic liberties. I tried to get into her shoes to decide why she took a decision at a particular time,” Ranaut was quoted as saying.

“Jayalalithaa is a great Bharata Natyam dancer. She even gave many performances. So, I learned the dance for the movie. It is not easy to play her because she looks different in four phases of her life. Decreasing and increasing weight for the same film is not easy. AL Vijay is a talented director and has extreme clarity about what he is doing. Producers should be appreciated for holding the movie despite getting several fancy offers from OTT,” the 'Queen' actress went on to add.

In the interview, Kangana went on to express her disappointment over Multiplex Association's decision not to screen the film in Hindi. “On one side, we are trying to help the theaters survive. They should behave responsibly. They allowed Radhe simultaneous release. It looks like they are being partial here. Gender-bias and groupism is not good for the industry,” she reportedly said.

She burst onto mainstream Bollywood with Salman Khan's production 'Loveyatri' (2018) but Warina Hussain has, all along, lived under the shadows of Taliban's atrocity. "People in India say I come from the land of bombs," she had said in one of her earlier interviews. After Kabul fell in the hands of Taliban, Warina was too distraught to talk. "A family member and her husband managed to get on the evacuation plane to the US, but their toddler is still in Afghanistan. I am crying for hours, and so is my mother... These are not the stories you watch on TV; this is my family," Warina shares with WION from London, where she is currently shooting for a film.

In this exclusive interview with WION, the model-turned-actress, who has been living and working in Mumbai for a while now, says she will return to Afghanistan 'only and only' when Taliban starts respecting women, shares her hopes for the nation that has always been judged based on the wrongdoings of the terrorist outfit and why she sympathizes with women who have picked up arms back home.

Excerpts from the conversation:

WION: With everything that’s been happening in your home country, how are your loved ones holding up? What preventative measures have they taken to ensure safety?

WARINA HUSSAIN: Young girls (in my family) are currently in hiding--and some are in safe houses--fearing that they will be forced to marry Taliban fighters. It hit me even harder last week, when we celebrated Raksha Bandhan, when a male swears to protect a female family member, and it made me think about all of our girls who are in danger.

WION: You were shooting in London when the government collapsed, and heartbreakingly horrific visuals started surfacing from Afghanistan. How did you deal with the shock of it, and what was your initial reaction like?

WARINA HUSSAIN: This humanitarian disaster, which involves loved ones, was heartbreaking. As I decided to speak up for the people, I had several emotional breakdowns and found it difficult to concentrate on work, but as they say, the show must go on, and I haven't given up on our country.

WION: In an earlier interview you had said, and I quote, “People in India say I come from the land of bombs.” Do you think the latest events in Afghanistan will make the world kinder towards you, and all of Afghanistan?

WARINA HUSSAIN: People all over the world have a preconceived notion about Afghanistan. Unfortunately, its peace and progress have always been hampered by twisted ideologies, and it is not fair to identify its people only with the country's situation. They have always had a rich culture with hardworking people, as seen by the last 20 years of progress.

WARINA HUSSAIN: Peace is the way forward! A government made up of both men and women, as well as a leader who is true to his land.

WION: Based on several reports that have been coming out of Afghanistan—on treatment of women in the hands of Taliban—I think it is safe to say that women will be stripped off all their basic human rights. Women are now educated, and they will fight for it this time. I don't blame the women who have taken up arms; it's far too early to give up hope.

WION: Under what circumstances will you go back home, if at all?

Netflix announces Bollywood version of French dramedy 'Call My Agent!'

Bollywood actor Aparshakti Khurana is of the opinion that movies can bring about change, especially of the social kind.

"My take on films like 'Helmet' is that primarily these films are made for entertainment purpose. A certain kind of social message woven into the script makes the content a little more relevant, but it's up to you if you take it home or not or if you are able to inculcate these values in you or not.," he was quoted as saying.

"It's a plus to have a social message in a film as the script becomes more logical. There are films which leave an impact and make people ponder. For example: Dangal did change a lot of people, encouraging kids, especially daughters to play a sport. So yes, a film with a social message does change the mindset," added Aparshakti.

For those of you who are not in the know, the actor will soon be seen in Zee5 Original film 'Helmet' opposite Pranutan Bahl.

"I have been put in this ‘cute girl’ slot. I thought this role would flop really badly or work really well. It completely hinged on the performance. It was very scary and risky for me... I never expected so many people to call and message me (to appreciate my performance). I got calls from people who never called me before," she reportedly told a news outlet.
Samantha has received the Best Actors award at the Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne (IFFM).

“I don’t think I would sign anything thinking it will get me awards. I sign roles that I really believe in. The roles that I believe will make me a better person. But, the awards are always welcome as they have always inspired me to do better. In that way, I’m thankful for awards,” said Samantha about her recent win.

While Raji is being appreciated by one and all, prep for the role had come with its fair share of challenges. “I was given the role of a trained fighter with not much dialogue. So I had to make sure that I physically looked the part even though I am small. The body language and the physicality of the character was something I really worked on. It needed to look like not much thought was put into Raji’s mannerisms but actually, I put a lot of thought into it,” she added.

“I watched a lot of real-life footage and documentaries. That really helped me. Also, I worked with a bunch of great teams, including directors and stunt persons. Stunt master Yannick Ben has an amazing style of fighting. It was very, very unique. And I wanted to imitate his style. I don’t think he thought he had a particular style in the way he moved and fought,” she further added.

As for OTT platforms--her 'The Family Man 2' released in Amazon Prime Video--the actor feels it has opened new doors for artists. “OTT has been a really welcome change not just for actors but also for technicians. It is blurring the line between all the industries. It has become an amalgamation of all good talents. Audiences are also lapping up all kinds of content. One doesn’t need to worry about whether an OTT movie/series is commercial enough or romantic enough. You have so much opportunity to put out what you believe in and have an audience that will appreciate it,” she was quoted as saying.

Multiple National Awards. Part of a steady, sought-after trio in Bollywood. A musical career spanning decades. He has seen the kind of success some only dream of. But, ask Cannes World Film Festival winner Shankar Mahadevan--his biographical documentary 'Decoding Shankar' has won 'best Indian Film' and 'Best Biographical Film' at the recently concluded cinema extravagenza--if he wants to take it slow, and he says, matter-of-factly, "I really, really honestly sincerely feel that I have not even scratched the surface of music." Such is his dedication towards work.

In an exclusive interview with WION, the veteran music composer-singer reminisces the time his wife had nudged him to take up music (and thank goodness for that!), his 'marriage' to band members Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa and why he never ever thinks of quitting music.

Excerpts from the conversation:

WION: To win 'Best Indian Film' and 'Best Biographical Film' all at once and on a platform like the Cannes World Film Festival happens very rarely, and is a marvelous achievement in itself. How did you react to the news? Has it sunk in yet?

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN: Yeah, I mean, how can I describe what I'm feeling it is a feeling absolute. I'm feeling absolutely ecstatic and overwhelmed. overjoyed You know, when we made this film, you know, it was it was just, it was just deep TC one's passion and his her dedication to the subject, you know, and I had faith in it and, you know, we just made it but never in our dreams, we thought that, you know, it's gonna win so many awards and get represented in so many festivals. And I don't think that those things were in our mind, especially and, you know, and whatever this film, The success of this film, the kind of recognition that it's got all the awards, all the accolades that this film has got, I owe it to this person, Deepti Sivan, who is who has really, really, really worked hard and, you know, done a lot of research on this. So everything I dedicate to her because I'm just playing. It's about me, I know that but, you know, but all the awards, all the accolades and all the recognition is for DPC one and her team.

WION: If you were to ‘decode’ Shankar—the person—how would you describe him?

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN: Yeah, if I have to decode me, I think I'm a person who doesn't take things very seriously. I believe in peace. Peace is my number one agenda in life. And love is peace and love are two very, very important things. And if you decode me, I would say that anger and ego are two things that I don't believe in. And I think I'm a person who likes to derive big pleasures out of very, very simple things.

WION: Since we are talking about your life and legacy, what has been the most profound experience that has shaped you as a musician and altered your approach towards life—for better or worse?

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN: Well, being a musician many times, we realize that we are blessed; not all the people around you have the power of music, the magic of music. And when you realize that you really feel so blessed and so happy and you're in gratitude. And I think the people around me have always been so supportive. My wife (Sangeeta Mahadevan), when I was just going around with her, and you know, and I was an engineer, I was a successful engineer. But she's the one who told me that, you know, there may be a million engineers, but I think that there's going to be only one Shankar Mahadevan, and I think moments like these, they have really defined my musical career and they have helped me progress. Man also meeting the correct kind of people in the correct place doing the correct kind of music, and re and that, that music reaching out to the people of the country and all over the world. You know, you got to be really the timing and everything should be so perfect, and I was one of those lucky people to get all those aspects in my life.

WION: How has Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, or the ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ of Bollywood, contributed to the moment leading up to your Cannes win?

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN: Shankar Ehsaan Loy, the trio, it's been a part of my life. And I think it is, it's like a marriage, you know, the way we worked our partnership, our music, how we function, it is like, it's like how marriage functions, you know, we have to work on it on a daily basis. Of course, there are ups and downs and you know, there are emotional disagreements, creative discrepancies, but, but we know, for a fact that all three of us we are looking at the bigger picture, we are looking at the success of the song, the beauty of the song, the the final product that comes out, so, even never in our mind has it ever crossed. That, you know, we have to split up and we have to just, you know, become individual, you know, we can't function as a team anymore, we have never ever thought of that, because we ourselves are very different individuals and have individual, you know, our own lives to handle. But when we come together, it's automatically a team. And, and there's a lot of respect, between the three of us respect as people, and also for creative ideas. And unless you respect the other person's creative idea, I don't think you can, you know, you can go forward in life, and they have been instrumental in a lot of, you know, musical moments in my life, which are so, so, so important. And we have created music that that's going to stay on this planet for a very, very long time. I mean, there are many many songs that these pieces of music are going to stay for a very, very long time and my band have been instrumental in that, so I thank them for that.

WION: Having worked for so long in the industry and accomplishing almost everything there is to accomplish, where do you stand ambition-wise? Do you still have the hunger to explore new ground or are you content to slow down a bit?

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN: Oh, I've been in the industry for many many years but not for a minute I feel that I have been there and I've done that and I've accomplished so much. And I don't need to do anything more I never ever feel because always that feeling of thirst or hunger of exploring so many things, I really, really honestly sincerely feel that I have not even scratched the surface of music. There is so much more to do and there is so many there are so many possibilities, you know, had I been a little more less lazy, I would have done even more than what I'm doing but I know that you know there are I derive pleasure from other things other than music also like you know, being with family and spending small moments, you know, enjoying the you know, pleasures of just being at home with my children. You know, spending time with my wife and doing in a traveling-around holiday. These are also very, very important (things). Like cooking, these things are very important for me. So you know that hunger is I mean, tremendous amount of hunger is always there.
