<p>Shaad Ali's latest venture is a local adaptation of a runaway hit Netflix series that follows four hapless French talent agents as they wrangle and coddle their celebrity clients.</p>

<p>'Call My Agent: Bollywood'&nbsp;trades Paris for Mumbai, the sprawling port city home to India's most lucrative production houses and its most famous megastars.</p>

<p>Ali's is the third makeover for the Emmy award-winning 'Dix Pour Cent'&nbsp;-- a nod to the traditional 10 per cent cut taken by agents in the movie business -- after earlier incarnations in Britain and Turkey.</p>

<p>"It was very easy for me to be seduced by the show," he tells AFP, crediting a career spent observing the conduct of actors, their entourages and his fellow filmmakers for inspiration.</p>

<p>But getting the show from the script to the screen was tough, with last year's Covid outbreak in Mumbai upending the production schedule.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One French critic branded Ali's version a "disaster", while Indian reviewers have also given hostile verdicts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But Ali, who before this was best known for romantic dramas starring some of Bollywood's most recognisable male heart-throbs, says he has remained "peacefully unaware" of the bad press.</p>

<p>"I keep hearing from people that there are mixed reactions -- some love it, some have hated it -- which I prefer," he says.</p>

<p>"I don't like in-between reactions... that's what is scary." Nor has he shied away from poking fun at the airy and sometimes oblivious personalities often found in any celebrity milieu.</p>

<p>"My intention was never bad, and I am part of (the industry) really, so if I am making fun, I am included in that," he says.</p>

<p>"All the celebrities who appeared on the show were very supportive in making fun of each other... it was just natural."</p>

<p>Lead actress Aahana Kumra plays the headstrong Amal, one of four celebrity talent managers fighting to keep their flailing agency alive after the sudden death of its founder.</p>

<p>"We're self-absorbed," she tells AFP.</p>

<p>"That is the nature of the job -- we are so about ourselves that we completely forget that there is an agent who has a life of their own."</p>

<p>A recurring subplot through 'Call My Agent'&nbsp;is Amal's relationship with another woman, culminating in an onscreen kiss -- a rarity in Indian cinema and television, where prevailing mores keep depictions of romantic intimacy at a minimum.</p>

<p>Kumra believes India is moving towards more candid portrayals of same-sex relationships and was indifferent to the prospect of criticism from audiences.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For me all that really matters is what my parents think of a certain performance," she says. "It is really nice to hear from them that they were very happy to see it."</p>

<p>A small regional Indian film--of Tamil background--'Koozhangal', is making big headlines across the country. Why? You may ask. Well, this heart-wrenching tale of an alcoholic father and his son is India's official Oscar entry for 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And now, in an exclusive interview with WION, the film's producer--Vignesh Shivan--tells us that they will do everything in their capacity to bring the honour home. During his minutes long interview, Shivan also touched upon the debate around 'Sardar Udham', laughed when asked about 'Parasite' movie's global recognition, &nbsp;and explained why India hasn't secured a Oscar nomination since 2001.</p>

<p><strong>WION: Now my first question for you is what was your reaction when you learnt that your film has been chosen to represent India at the Oscars? Were you expecting this, considering your film was up against formidable competitrs like 'Sherni', 'Sardar Udham' and many more?</strong></p>

<p><strong>VS:</strong> Expectations were there because the film had a very good festival run already. When it got selected for Rotterdam (Film Festival), that's when we ourselves that 'okay, this film is something special'. Since then, it has been surprising us every step of the way. We won the Tiger Award (at Rotterdam Film Festival). Wherever it got selected, the film ended up getting some laurel.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: I am sure you are keen to here those words as we are: 'And the Oscar goes to...' How strong are the film's chances of securing a nomination or even, in fact, taking the trophy home?</strong></p>

<p><strong>VS: </strong>As of now, most of the (other) films are soemthign wre have already met at other film festivals. Our film has been to mutiple film festivals across the globe and won mutiple awards, expect for the films that have been screened at Cannes Film festival 2021. Everything about the film is positive, we have not received even a small negative review about the film. Everyone's been awestruck and their expression after watching the film has been overwhelming (for us). <p><strong>WION: Now the last time an Indian film secured an Oscar nomination was way back in 2001 when Aamir Khan-starrer 'Lagaan' almost went to the finish line. What do you think are the reasons behind India's performance at the Oscars?</strong></p>

<p><strong>VS:</strong> 'Lagaan' was a pathbreaking film, yes. And after that, a lot of Tamil films have also represented if we go a couple of years back. 'Visaranai', a film by our own director Vetrimaaran sir, was a very good film. But then to enter the short list, there are a lot of factors that come into play. How well are we able to present the film, the PR activity behind it and even the kind of positioning the film has. We are putting our best foot forward (this timr round) and doing our best. If we get more support, I think we will be able to crack this <em>(smiles!)</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: Talking about cinema in general, Korean film 'Parasite' has been lauded a lot by the international film community as a whole. How do you view this film's success at the Oscars?</strong></p>

<p><em>(Laughs!)</em> 'Parasite' had a dream run, we would be happy if we get that kind of critical acclaim and recognition. For every filmmaker, it is their dream to stand on the stage of the Academy Awards.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: Before we wrap up, we know that Vicky Kaushal has congratulated you recently and Shhotjit Sircar's 'Sardar Udham'--starring the actor in lead--was one of the contenders to becoming India's official entry for the Oscars. Jury members have now said that the film was not chosen because it propagates hatred against the British. What do you have to say about this?</strong></p>

<p><strong>VS: </strong>It is very generous of Vicky Kaushal sir to appreciate our film, it shows his magnanimity. It shows how humble he is. Since I have not watched 'Sardar Udham' yet, I don't know what to say or how to comment on that. But I am sure it must be a great film as it has come to this level and was supposed to be the official entry for the Oscars. Even if the jury had selected 'Sardar Udham', we would have been really happy for that film. By seeing the promos and trailers, it looks like a brilliant film. It looks like a great film. Once something gets selected (for a major award), we have to support one another. That's how we look at it.&nbsp;</p>

And now, in an exclusive interview with WION, the film's producer--Vignesh Shivan--tells us that they will do everything in their capacity to bring the honour home. During his minutes long interview, Shivan also touched upon the debate around 'Sardar Udham', laughed when asked about 'Parasite' movie's global recognition, and explained why India hasn't secured a Oscar nomination since 2001. VS: Expectations were there because the film had a very good festival run already. When it got selected for Rotterdam (Film Festival), that's when we ourselves that 'okay, this film is something special'. Since then, it has been surprising us every step of the way. We won the Tiger Award (at Rotterdam Film Festival). Wherever it got selected, the film ended up getting some laurel. WION: I am sure you are keen to here those words as we are: 'And the Oscar goes to...' How strong are the film's chances of securing a nomination or even, in fact, taking the trophy home? VS: As of now, most of the (other) films are soemthign wre have already met at other film festivals. Our film has been to mutiple film festivals across the globe and won mutiple awards, expect for the films that have been screened at Cannes Film festival 2021. Everything about the film is positive, we have not received even a small negative review about the film. Everyone's been awestruck and their expression after watching the film has been overwhelming (for us). Malaika Arora birthday: Partner Arjun Kapoor pens sweet post for his lady love

<p>Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, who has been in jail since October 3 in connection to a drug-bust case, assured NCB officials during a counseling session that he would work for the welfare of the poor.</p>

<p>According to reports, Aryan has also promised to walk down the right path and not do anything to tarnish his name in the future, an official reportedly said on Saturday.</p>

<p>Aryan is currently lodged in Arthur Road prison after he was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) following alleged drug seizure at a party from a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast on October 2.</p>

<p>During his counselling session by officials that involved NCB's zonal director Sameer Wankhede and other social workers, Aryan said after his release, he will work towards the "social and financial uplift of the poor and downtrodden" and refrain from doing what would put him in spotlight for wrong reasons, an agency official reportedly said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I will do something that will make you proud of me," Aryan Khan reportedly told the officials and social workers present.</p>

<p>A special court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act cases would pass its order on Aryan's bail plea on October 20.</p>

<p>A tweet by the agency said that eight people--including Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan--are being questioned in connection to the raid at an alleged rave party at a cruise off Mumbai coast. The news was confirmed to the agency by NCB Mumbai Director, Sameer Wankhede.</p>

<p>"We are acting in an impartial manner. In the process, if some connections to Bollywood or rich people emerge, so be it. We have to act within the purview of the law... We have to keep on working in Mumbai. If you look at the data, there must have been more than 300 raids in the last one year. This will continue whether foreign nationals are involved, film industry or rich people are involved," NCB Chief SN Pradhan reportedly said on the seizure of drugs to ANI.</p>

<p>On the basis of specific information, the officials of NCB Mumbai conducted a raid on a cruise ship which was bound from Mumbai to Goa on 02.10.2021. During the operation, all suspects, as per the information, were searched for various drugs. Items&nbsp;like MDMA/ Ecstasy, Cocaine, MD (Mephedrone) and <em>charas</em> has been recovered. A total of eight&nbsp;persons, including two women,&nbsp;have been apprehended and their roles are being investigated in relation to the said recovery. NCB Mumbai has registered Crime no. Cr 94/21 in this matter. Further investigation is underway.</p>

"I was diagnosed with depression in 2014. I used to feel weird that people don't talk about it. It was a stigma and people don't even know much about it. During that time, I realized that if I am experiencing this, then there would be many people out there facing depression as well. My ambition in life was that if I could save just one life, then my purpose was solved. We have come a long way now," she reportedly said.</p>

It was not the usual cry. The way I was crying, it was like a cry for help. She asked me to visit a psychiatrist. I did that and recovered after many months. But mental health is something that you can't forget about even after you recover. It is something you have to take care of. I have introduced some lifestyle changes now."</p>

They’ll say, ‘Dress up in a certain way for meetings, socialise more, be papped everywhere’. I had to decide if I personally connected with [these ideas]. I had to push myself to not fall into this [trap] and stay focused on finding good roles.
