<p>Needing to win the contest by a big margin, Afghanistan started their 292-run chase on a sloppy note as they lost early wickets.</p>

<p>Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side were 50/3 as the Sri Lanka bowlers were in top form at the start. Shahidi’s 59-run knock and Mohammad Nabi’s 65 runs helped them stay in the contest while maintaining a good run rate. The likes of Gulbadin Naib (22), Rahmat Shah (45) and others played valuable knocks to keep Afghanistan in the contest before they lost way in the chase.</p>

<p>Earlier, Kusal Mendis' fighting 92 and a late partnership of 64 runs by Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana helped Sri Lanka post a fine total of 291/8 against Afghanistan in their Asia Cup 2023 match here at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Afghanistan suffered a heartbreak in Asia Cup 2023 as they failed to qualify for the Super Four stage after losing to Sri Lanka by the narrowest of margins. It was, however, Afghanistan team dugout and somewhat officials' mistake that the Asian minnows couldn't qualify for the next stage.</p>

<p>Chasing 292, the Afghans needed to score those runs in 37.1 overs to beat Sri Lanka on net run rate. Sri Lanka, however, rocked Afghanistan early as they brought them three down for 50 runs. Rahmat Shah (45), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) and Mohammad Nabi (65 off 32) then brought Afghans back in the game.</p>

<p>The match was poised perfectly with Afghans needing 16 runs off the next 10 balls, but Kasun Rajitha sent Najibullah Zadran back on the fourth ball of the 36th over to tilt the game in Lankan's favour. Rashid Khan (27 not out off 16) then kept his team in the game with 12 runs off the next over's last three balls.</p>

<p>With three runs needed on the first ball of the 38th over, Mujeeb holed out and Rashid sank to his knees, thinking the game was over, but only it wasn't. Afghanistan still had a chance to win and qualify by reaching 293 after 37.2 overs, 294 after 37.3, 295 after 37.5, 296 after 38 overs, or 297 after 38.1.</p>

<p>The last batsman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, seemed to have no knowledge of this just like Rashid Khan. Farooqui blocked the first ball he faced - a juicy full-toss, he defended the next one before getting out on the fourth ball of the 38th over as Afghanistan lost by two runs.</p>

<p>Speaking on the situation after the match, Afghan coach Jonathan Trott admitted that they didn't have the knowledge of those equations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We were never communicated those calculations," he said. "All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We weren't told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297. [That we could win in] 38.1 overs was never communicated to us."</p>

<p>Nonetheless, Afghanistan will rue this rare chance as they miss out on the Super Four berth but they can take pride in putting up a show for their fans in the stadium and fans back home.</p>

<p>The five matches of Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 will be hosted in Colombo as originally scheduled. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), however, seems to be miffed with the decision and the manner in which the decision was taken by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The PCB, nonetheless, has agreed to the decision.</p>

<p>The drama of shifting matches out of Colombo, preferably to Hambantota, started after the blockbuster game between India and Pakistan was washed out after the first innings on September 2. The ACC too was mulling shifting the remaining games, including the final, to Hambantota with a rain warning in Colombo in the upcoming days.</p>

<p>Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has made heads turn during the ongoing Asia Cup. Currently part of the commentary panel of the continental tournament, Gambhir is in the news for showing the middle finger to a section of the crowd during the rain-abandoned India-Pakistan group stage clash, in Kandy, on Saturday (September 02). The video went viral where fans were allegedly taunting Gambhir by chanting Virat Kohli's name (with whom he had a spat during IPL 2023) before the ex-cricketer made the obscene action.</p>

<p>However, Gambhir has explained his actions and made a big claim. The 2011 ODI World Cup-winning member claimed that not everything is shown on social media, alleging anti-India chants from Pakistan supporters in the crowd prompted him to make the controversial gesture. Thus, his action&nbsp;had nothing to do with Kohli chants.</p>

<h2><strong>'I can't hear things being said about my country'</strong></h2>

<p>Talking to the media on Monday (September 04), during&nbsp;India's final group stage game versus Nepal in Kandy, Gambhir said, "Whatever is shown on social media, there is no truth to it. People show what they want to show on social media. What actually happened was there were anti-India slogans being chanted, I heard chants of 'Hindustan Murdabad'. There were slogans about Kashmir also. So there will obviously be a reaction, one way or the other or laugh at it. There were a couple of Pakistani people... they were shouting anti-India stuff. Obviously, it was a natural reaction. I can't hear things being said about my country."</p>

<p>Gambhir further asserted, "That's why that reaction came out. If you talk bad about the country, what do expect me to do? Should I smile and go away or keep quiet? I am not that kind of a person. I just want to say this, when you have come to watch a match, support your team. There's no need to give political reactions there. There is no need to bring up Kashmir there. There is no need to speak ill about India. You support your team, your country. There were Indian crowd also, they were supporting their team."</p>

The venue, which receives the least rainfall in September in the island nation, has already been signed off as the venue, ESPNCricinfo reported further, citing PCB sources.</p>

The SLC officials prefer to keep the games in Colombo but want Hambantota as the venue instead of Dambulla if the relocation happens. The reason given by the SLC officials to select Hambantota is the lack of floodlights in Dambulla.</p>

<p>The Super Four games are scheduled in Colombo on September 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15, with the final set to be played on September 17. There are six Super Four games to be played and one of them is to be played in Lahore on September 6 - the last match scheduled in Pakistan.</p>

<p>Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi, meanwhile, called out ACC for selecting Sri Lanka as co-host of the regional tournament after the India vs Pakistan match failed to produce a result due to rain on September 2. Notably, Pakistan were the original host of the tournament but an objection by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over playing there led to Sri Lanka being added as co-hosts of the tournament.</p>

Asia Cup 2023: Aasif Sheikh creates history, becomes Nepal's first player to slam fifty vs India

<p>India survived a horrible top-order collapse against Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2023 opener as Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan played arguably the most important innings of their ODI careers. Pandya, vice-captain of India, and Kishan added 138 runs for the fifth wicket to rescue India from a precarious position.</p>

<p>Kishan, who already has a double-century to his name in ODIs, scored 82 and Pandya scored 87 as the duo took India to 204 in 37.3 after losing four wickets for 66. Kishan most probably got his chance in the playing XI as KL Rahul was not available for the first two matches of India's Asia Cup campaign. After the innings against Pakistan, however, Kishan has done everything he can to ensure he isn't overlooked once KL Rahul is back.</p>

<p>Winning the toss, Rohit &amp; Co. opted to bowl first in another rain-predicted contest in Kandy. While Indian bowlers did produce quite a lot of chances, the fielders failed to complement with back-to-back dropped catches. Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer dropped easy chances as Nepal openers were off to a solid start.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India kicked off their campaign in the Asia Cup by taking on Babar Azam-led Pakistan on September 02 (Saturday) in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Opting to bat first, India were tottering at 27 for 2 and were further reduced to 66 for 4 before Ishan Kishan, batting at No. 5 for injured KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya stitched an impressive 138-run fifth-wicket stand as India managed to recover.</p>

<p>Eventually, Kishan (82) and Hardik (87) enabled India to post 266 all-out in 48.5 overs before rain abandoned the remainder of the game. While India's top-order continued to struggle versus Pakistan's pacers, especially Shaheen Afridi, Kishan gave a good account of himself while batting in a tough situation and was ably supported by white-ball vice-captain Hardik. After the game, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded the 25-year-old despite the youngster missing out on a much-deserved century.</p>

<p>Gavaskar told&nbsp;<i>India Today,&nbsp;</i>"Got to give credit to the young man for coming in a crisis situation and scoring 82 runs and having that partnership. I think if he was discomforted by some injury, it is only natural for him to think that because he cannot run fast between the wickets, he should be looking for the boundary. So that's totally understandable at all. So I wouldn't point a finger at him at all. I would just pat him on the back and say well done to the young man<i>."</i></p>

<p>Kishan played his shots whenever offered enough room but was very calculative in his approach during his solid stand with Hardik. He took his chances versus the spinners and rotated the strike as well but lost his wicket for 82, dismissed by Haris Rauf in the 38th over. He missed out on a big knock, however, led India's recovery with a lot of maturity.</p>

And he showed that, you know, in a crisis situation to rise to the occasion, that was terrific innings," Gavaskar added.</p>

The conditions were deemed not suitable by the umpires and ultimately the decision was taken to call off the contest. The conditions were not suitable for further play and the result was declared a draw with a share of the spoils.</p>

<p>As India were struggling, Ishan and Hardik built a terrific 138-run stand for the fifth wicket pulling the Men in Blue out of danger. Both the batters were aggressive with their approach as Ishan scored at a strike rate of 101 while Hardik was also scoring at almost 100. Ishan’s 82-run innings included two sixes and nine fours while Hardik’s innings boasted of one six and seven fours.</p>

<p>India will next face Nepal on Monday, with the margin of win to determine India’s position in the group. India will have to beat Nepal by a big margin to win the group but will play their Super Four clash in Sri Lanka if they qualify. Pakistan will travel back to their homeland to play their Super Four clash. An unlikely win for Nepal though could see them qualify for the Super Four at India’s expense.</p>

Pak skipper Babar Azam then brought Shaheen back in the 44th over and the southpaw took two wickets in the over, sending back both Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Shaheen eventually finished with four wickets for just 35 in 10 overs.</p>

<p>Naseem then joined the party to wrap the tail and took all three wickets to end India's innings in 48.5 overs for 266 runs. Naseem also bowled brilliantly, giving away just 36 runs for his three wickets. As for the spinners, Pakistan used three of them and they went for 133 runs in 17 overs collectively.</p>

<p>Their lead spinner Shadab Khan gave away 57 in his nine overs while Mohammad Nawaz accounted for 55 runs in his eight overs. The third spinner, Agha Salman, bowled just four overs for 21 runs.</p>

<p>India batsman Shreyas Iyer revealed that he was 'nervous and had a sleepless night' ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 match against arch-rivals Pakistan. Iyer was included in the Asia Cup squad after recovering from a back injury and was included in the playing XI as well.</p>

<p>“I never imagined I’ll be playing in the Asia Cup. The recovery was slow and steady. I passed the fitness test one week before selection, and I was really happy with that,” said Iyer ahead of the match on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.</p>

<p>“I was nervous last night, I couldn’t sleep. I am super excited to play this match against Pakistan. It’s a phenomenal feeling to be honest as they are the number 1 team at the moment,” Iyer added.</p>
