Rohit recalled the time when he was dropped for the 2011 ODI World Cup. He revealed how former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh helped him overcome the slump. "I was sad and sitting in my room and didn't know what to do next. I remember Yuvi calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner," Rohit asserted.

''He explained to me how it feels when you are left out. He told me, 'the best thing is that you have so many years in front of you. As we play in the World Cup, you take this chance to work hard on your game, and skills and make a comeback. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup'."

Despite not being part of Dhoni-led India's victorious campaign in 2011, Rohit has redeemed himself in style and was the leading run-getter in the 2019 edition (648 runs with five hundreds). Ahead of the tournament-opener, where Babar Azam &amp; Co. host Nepal, former Pakistan great Wasim Akram opened up on the favourites for the multi-nation competition and feels every team has a chance.

Asia Cup: Former Australia skipper Tom Moody says Virat Kohli and Babar Azam 'very much alike'

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny and vice president Rajeev Shukla will be travelling to Pakistan ahead of the start of the Asia Cup 2023. The news was first reported by media outlet The Indian Express and cites a BCCI official official, confirming the same.

“BCCI president Binny and vice president Shukla will be going to Pakistan to watch a few games. PCB had invited BCCI and as one of the key member of ACC, Binny and Shukla will be travelling to Pakistan,” a BCCI official confirmed to The Indian Express.

This would be first time a BCCI official will be visiting the neighouring country since 2008. The cricketing ties froze between them due to ongoing political tensions after 2008 Mumbai terror&nbsp;attack. The stalemate between the countries also prompted India to not travel to Pakistan for the regional tournament.&nbsp;

After BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Jay Shah cleared BCCI's stance to not play in Pakistan, the tournament was on the verge of being cancelled. After long discussions between the original host&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;and the member countries, the tournament is now being held jointly by Sri Lanka and Pakistan with first four matches being played in the latter country.

Binny and Shukla will be visiting Lahore which is the venue for three of the four games being hosted by Pakistan. The tournament will kick off on August 30 when Pakistan take on Nepal.

In the World Cup, India struggled to fix the&nbsp;No. 4 position, but&nbsp;Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries added to their woes,&nbsp;and the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals of the mega event. Speaking about spin options, even though leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion caused a furore among fans and former cricketers, Ganguly termed the squad capable of winning not only Asia Cup but the upcoming World Cup as well.

The regional tournament - which is being played in 50-over format this year as a precursor to the ODI World Cup, will start August 30. India will play their first match against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

The BCCI selectors, on Monday (August 21), announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad includes captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, etc., whereas it also marks the return of middle-order duo Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Yuzvendra Chahal was the notable omission from the 17-member squad for the continental tournament, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team,&nbsp;it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

<h2>'If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him'</h2>

In a video on YouTube, Srikkanth said, "It's being said that KL Rahul has a niggle. If you have a niggle, don't pick him in the squad. If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him. That was our policy. On the day of selection, if a player is not fit, don't select him. If you want to pick him for the World Cup, select him for the World Cup. That's a different issue. Now they are saying that he might play after a couple of matches and that's why we have picked Sanju Samson as a travelling reserve. What's all this."

The former cricketer further opined, "You're playing Asia Cup which is also a premier tournament. We haven't qualified for the Asia Cup (final) over the last two editions. You have to qualify for the final and perform well. They are still unsure about the World Cup squad. You're confused. You need to have something called a selection policy. I am not trying to take any credit but let me tell you what we (our selection panel) used to have."

Srikkanth recalled his term as a chief selector and added, "We had this problem during a Test match. It was against a Test vs South Africa. VVS Laxman said he would play if he gets fit in time and urged us to keep him in the team. But on the day of the match, he was not fit. And then we thought of drafting Rohit Sharma in. But Rohit played football and injured himself. After that, Wriddhiman Saha made his debut. On that day, our selection panel decided not to be desperate. On the day of selection, if you're not fit, don't pick that player. You're making it look as though Indians don't have talent. You have created a situation like that."

With Rahul having a niggle, India have Ishan Kishan as a backup in the main squad whereas Samson will also be the travelling reserve. The seven-time Asia Cup champions are placed in Group A along with Pakistan and Nepal.&nbsp;

Former Australia batsman Matthew Hayden has backed youngster Tilak Varma's selection in India's Asia Cup squad. Varma has been included in the 17-man Asia Cup squad which is being played in a 50-over format as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup. Hayden thinks it's a good strategy to have Tilak in the side as it would keep other players 'honest.'&nbsp;

"We've seen the class of Tilak Varma. I think it's a good strategy in terms of not just this World Cup but even potentially getting into the next World Cup as well," Hayden said while attending an event in Mumbai.&nbsp;

"The great thing about India is it's got a really solid one-two-three combination. Similar to Australia actually, when you look at their last four or five months, they've had a really good and strong - what we like to call - the engine room. And then they've got some good problems to solve through the middle order.

Asked to chase 202, Afghanistan were never in the contest as they lost wickets at regular intervals. They lost four wickets in the first powerplay and were 4/3 at one stage with the likes of Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah running riot with the ball. Interestingly, only two batters crossed double-digit for Afghanistan before they were bowled out for 59 runs in 19.2 overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (18) and Azmatullah Omarzai (16) were the picks of the batters in Afghanistan while extras contributed eight runs for them in a below-par show. Rauf was the chief culprit for Men in Navy Blue as he scalped five wickets for 18 runs while Shaheen Afridi ended with a brace. Nassem Shah and Shadab Khan also scalped with one wicket each.

Earlier, Pakistan had the worst possible start to the contest as they lost two wickets for seven and were 40/3 before the end of the first powerplay. The 1992 ODI World Cup winners were on the back foot from the start as they lost wickets at consistent intervals. Imam-ul-Haq top scored with 61 runs while Shadab Khan scored 39 runs with the bat. Shadab and Naseem put together a partnership of 35 runs for the ninth wicket.

The two nations will now meet on Thursday, August 24 at the same ground before they start their journey in the Asia Cup. They will also meet in the third ODI on Saturday in Colombo. Pakistan will then return to their homeland to face Nepal in the curtain-raiser for the Asia Cup before traveling back to Sri Lanka to face India in the high-voltage contest.

They are likely to revisit Pakistan for another game in the Super Four before a meeting with India (depending on group-stage results). Pakistan are also in the running to prepare their squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India where they start against the Netherlands on Friday, October 6.

With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and&nbsp;believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.&nbsp;

If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. India's latest young sensation Tilak Varma made a dream debut for the country on the recently-concluded tour of West Indies. The southpaw was easily the best batsman among other young guns for India in the five T20Is. He has been rewarded for his performance by getting a place in India's Asia Cup squad.

Tilak, who is currently in Ireland with the team for the three-T20I series, spoke about his selection in the squad. The regional tournament is being played in 50-over format this year as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup.&nbsp;

"I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too in the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. So yeah, it is one of my dreams and I'm just preparing for it," said Tilak on BCCI.tv.

About performing in the ODIs, Varma said he's pretty confident given that he has played a lot in domestic List A cricket.

"I'm pretty confident about playing one day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for long as you said, like in the List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state and the teams also have done well, so I'm pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I'm looking forward to it," said Varma.

Asia Cup, being hosted jointly by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will start on August 30. India will start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

I think he's played over 20 matches now and at a very modest return," Moody said on Star Sports.

“And to me, there are better options available. I would have much rather seen a younger player like a Jaiswal in that side. Or take that position, and play a wrist spinner. Um, you know another wrist spinner," Moody opined.

He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

On the other hand, Chopra opined on Suryakumar and said, "Suryakumar Yadav's story in ODI cricket has not been good. We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

Backing Chopra's claims, Samson has done reasonably well in the ODI format. The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. His T20I numbers aren't impressive but Samson has done well in ODIs. Meanwhile, Surya has struggled in the 50-over format, managing 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33. Varma, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the format. He got picked in the final 17 on the basis of a promising start to his international cricket career during India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and USA.

At the moment three guys are doing well and you can fit only 15. Unfortunately, someone has to fit. Dhawan formed a lethal opening pair with current captain Rohit over the years and remained India's consistent performer in ICC events (during the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy and 2015 ODI World Cup) but his stocks declined since 2021. And Shubman Gill's emergence, along with Ishan Kishan's attack-mode of play, led to his ouster in recent times. While he led India's second-stringed line-up in away tours (in New Zealand, Sri Lanka, etc.) and led in a few series at home as well, the 37-year-old has now fallen way behind in the pecking order.

Speaking to the reporters after India's squad&nbsp;announcement, Rohit opened up on Chahal's omission and has refused to rule out any player from India's&nbsp;scheme of things with regard to the upcoming ODI World Cup, beginning at home on October 05. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

Rohit further highlighted, "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us."

The 36-year-old&nbsp;added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma is currently part of the Bumrah-led Indian squad for the ongoing three T20Is versus Ireland in Dublin. So far, he hasn't managed to do anything significant in the two games but will aim for a big score in the final T20I with India already having an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. It will be interesting to see if he makes his ODI debut in the upcoming continental tournament, where India kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The regional tournament will be played in a 50-over format as a precursor to the ICC ODI World Cup which starts on October 5.

India were battling quite a few injury issues but the players, namely KL, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, have returned to fitness to be part of the India squad. While Iyer and Rahul will be making a comeback for the first time since injury, Bumrah is already playing against Ireland in T20Is as the captain.

Commenting on the squad and much-debated number 4 position, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said that there are enough options in the squad and anyone can play at the position.

"No. 4 is just a number, anyone can fit in," Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai. "I really don't think that anybody is born as an opener or No. 3 or No. 4. I had started in the middle order in one-day cricket and was asked to open when Sachin [Tendulkar] was the captain. Sachin also started at No. 6; when he opened, he became a world-class player.

"So anybody can play at No. 4. There's Virat Kohli for No. 4; there's Shreyas Iyer once he does well at the Asia Cup; there's KL Rahul. India has enormous talent."

Ganguly also opined that one position does not make much of a difference and all India need to do is select a player and stick with him at number 4.

"One batting slot doesn't make so much of a difference because you don't win a World Cup just with No. 4. There's no hard and fast rule that you need someone at No. 4, all you need to do is decide and let them play [at that position]," said the former BCCI chief.

The Asia Cup, which starts August 30, will be followed by the ODI World Cup and the current squad is expected to play in the ICC mega event, provided there are no injuries.

At that time, the BCCI made it clear that it does not want two captains in&nbsp;different white-ball formats. Hence, Rohit took over as the white-ball skipper and soon became the full-time captain in early 2022, post Kohli's resignation as the Test skipper.

Since then, India have not had great success across formats. They fell flat in the Asia Cup, held in the T20I format, in 2022 and also bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year, held in Australia.

Towards the end of the year, India lost the ODIs to hosts Bangladesh, conceded a home 50-over series to Australia early this year, came second in the WTC final and also lost the five T20I series to West Indies, held in West Indies and USA.

Injuries have plagued India's run as they still await the fitness reports of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off later this month.

Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team had lots on their plate ahead of the ODI World Cup at home, in October-November. 
 
In this regard, Latif spoke at length about India's current struggles and believes things would have been different, had Kohli remained the captain.&nbsp;

It will serve as an ideal dress rehearsal for the Asian sides before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

Before the Asia Cup, former Indian stumper Parthiv analysed Hardik's captaincy in the WI T20Is and called it a 'work in progress'. In addition, he was concerned with his form and feels the 29-year-old needs runs under his belt before the CWC '23 edition.
